In a previous study, we advanced an onsite source separation and synergistic treatment (O3ST) technology for household sewerage and showed its advantages in rural wastewater treatment. This study further put forward an assumption to extend the application of O3ST to the household food waste (FW) treatment, namely shredding FW, collecting it together with toilet wastewater (TW) and then treating them synergistically with source-separated washing wastewater. For the purpose of inspecting the technological feasibility, an experimental system was set up and run for 220 days. The results showed that the COD, total ammonia nitrogen, and TN removal efficiency was 93.8%, 92.5%, and 73.0% respectively, which proved the feasibility. The combined collection of TW and FW is conducive to the spontaneous realization of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in the wastewater treatment process, and the simultaneous reaction efficiency was 71.1%. This study also obtained some useful information for the subsequent process optimization and engineering.

A new potassium nitrate (KNO3)/diatomite shape-stabilized composite phase change material (SS-CPCM) was prepared by the mixing and sintering method. KNO3 served as the phase change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage, while diatomite acted as the carrier matrix to provide the structural strength and prevent the leakage of PCM. It was found that KNO3 could be retained 65 wt% into pores and on surfaces of diatomite without the leakage of melted KNO3 from the SS-CPCM. The calculated filling rate of molten KNO3 that could enter into the disc-like shape pore of diatomite verified the scanning electronic microscopy images of SS-CPCM. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that no reaction occurred between KNO3 and diatomite, performing good compatibility. According to the differential scanning calorimetry results, after 50 thermal cycles, the phase change temperatures for melting and freezing of SS-CPCM with 65 wt% KNO3 were changed from 330.23 °C and 332.90 °C to 330.11 °C and 332.84 °C and corresponding latent heats varied from 60.52 J/g and 47.30 J/g to 54.64 J/g and 41.25 J/g, respectively. The KNO3/diatomite SS-CPCM may be considered as a potential storage media in solar power plants for thermal energy storage.

In this study, the presummer diurnal cycle of rainfall (DCR) over southern China is examined using the merged 0.1°-resolution gridded hourly rain gauge and satellite rainfall dataset and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction Final Global Analysis during April to June of 2008–2015. Results show pronounced diurnal variations in rainfall amount, frequency, and intensity over southern China, with substantially different amplitudes from southwestern to southeastern China, and from the pre- to postmonsoon-onset period. Southwestern China often encounters significant nocturnal-to-morning rainfall under the influence of enhanced nocturnal low-level southwesterly winds. Southeastern China is dominated by afternoon rainfall, as a result of surface heating, likely aided by local topographical lifting. Both the pre- and postmonsoon-onset periods exhibit two diurnal rainfall peaks: one in the early morning and the other in the late afternoon. But the latter shows the two peaks with nearly equal amplitude whereas the former displays a much larger early morning peak than that in the late afternoon. Three propagating modes accounting for the presummer DCR are found: (i) an eastward- or southeastward-propagating mode occurs mostly over southwestern China that is associated with enhanced transport of warm and moist air from tropical origin and the induced low-level convergence, (ii) a quasi-stationary mode over southeastern China appears locally in the warm sector with weak-gradient flows, and (iii) an inland-propagating mode occurs during the daytime in association with sea breezes along the southern coastal regions, especially evident throughout the postmonsoon-onset period.

In the study, polyethylene glycol (PEG), lithium nitrate (LiNO3), and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) were employed as the low-, middle-, and high-temperature heat storage media, respectively. A series of novel shape-stabilized phase change materials were tailored by a post-preparation method with previously synthesized radial-like mesoporous silica and their structural and thermal properties were characterized. The silica was synthesized through a facile self-assembly process using cetyltriethylammonium bromide as the main template and tetraethyl orthosilicate as silica precursor. The obtained phase change composites showed good shape stability and high thermal energy storage capacity. The morphology and structure of the radial-like mesoporous silica were investigated after combining with different heat storage media. These composites exhibited excellent thermal stability, chemical compatibility, and thermal reliability. The efficient silica support has opened up some new application of energy materials based on novel phase change material/silica composites, such as energy conversion and heat storage for different temperature requirements.

To enhance the photocatalytic efficiency and resolve the titania recovery problem, we studied the processing of particle-stabilized emulsions for preparing porous TiO 2 ceramics in this study. The samples were synthesized with different solid contents from 15 vol% to 30 vol%. The solid content markedly affected the pore structure and morphology. When the solid content in the precursor was controlled at 30 vol%, the sample had the three-dimensional interpenetrating structure with high porosity and uniform pore structure and the average pore size was about 3–18 μm. With excellent pore structures, the samples show the high adsorption capacity and excellent photocatalysis performance for Rhodamine B. Furthermore, when porous TiO 2 ceramic was covered by a 2 nm carbon film layer (C/TiO 2 ), the adsorption efficiency and photocatalytic degradation rates were efficiently improved.

Flower-like hollow porous silica (FHPS) for high temperature thermal storage was first tailor-made by a self-assembly process using TEOS as SiO2 precursor and CTAB as template. A novel high-temperature Na2SO4/FHPS composite shape-stabilized PCM (ss-PCM) with a maximum absorption ratio of 80% Na2SO4 was designed. Na2SO4 was well dispersed in FHPS pores. The ss-PCM melted at 890.35 °C with the latent heat of 128.7 J/g and solidified at 874.29 °C with the latent heat of 130.5 J/g. The ss-PCM was thermally stable even after a 200-cycle of melting and freezing. The latent heat values of the ss-PCM make it suitable PCM for latent heat storage purposes at high temperature.

A series of novel polyethylene glycol-silver nanowire/expanded vermiculite shape-stabilized composite phase change materials (PEG–Ag/EVM ss-CPCMs) were prepared by physical blending and impregnation method to overcome liquid leakage during phase transition and enhance the thermal conductivity of PEG. In these PEG–Ag/EVM ss-CPCMs, PEG served as the phase change material for thermal energy storage; Ag NW served as thermal conductivity enhancement filler; EVM acted as the supporting material to provide structural strength and prevent the leakage of melted PEG. SEM analysis results indicated that Ag NW wrapped with PEG was well dispersed and enwrapped inside the pores and surfaces of EVM due to capillary force and surface tension. It was found that the maximum encapsulation capacity of PEG in all PEG–Ag/EVM ss-CPCMs with good shape stability was 66.1 wt.%. The thermal conductivity of PEG–Ag/EVM ss-CPCMs could be greatly enhanced by the prepared Ag NW with a length of 5–20 μm and a diameter of 50–100 nm. A theoretical calculation method was developed to predict and evaluate the thermal conductivity enhancement ability of Ag NW. The predictions were consistent with experimental results. The thermal conductivity of PEG–Ag/EVM ss-CPCM19.3 reached 0.68 W/m K, which was 11.3 times higher than that of pure PEG, and corresponding phase change latent heat was 96.4 J/g. The supercooling extent of PEG in PEG–Ag/EVM ss-CPCMs decreased approximate 7 °C because the EVM could act as a heterogeneous nucleation center to promote the crystallization of PEG. FT-IR and TGA results showed that the PEG–Ag/EVM ss-CPCMs exhibited excellent chemical compatibility and thermal stability.

Accumulating evidence indicates that the synaptic activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) has a neuroprotective effect on neurons. Our previous study demonstrated that APPL1 (adaptor protein containing pleckstrin homology domain, phosphotyrosine-binding domain, and leucine zipper motif) mediates the synaptic activity-dependent activation of PI3K-Akt signaling via coupling this pathway with NMDAR-PSD95 (postsynaptic density protein 95) complexes. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this process is still unknown. In the present study, we investigated the interaction of APPL1 with PSD95 using co-immunocytochemical staining and western blotting. We found that the PDZ2 domain of PSD95 is a binding partner of APPL1. Furthermore, we identified serine 707 of APPL1, a predicted phosphorylation site within the PDZ-binding motif at the C-terminus, as critical for the binding of APPL1 to PSD95, as well as for activation of the Akt signaling pathway during synaptic activity. This suggests that serine 707 of APPL1 is a potential phosphorylation site and may be involved in regulating the neuroprotective Akt signaling pathway that depends on synaptic NMDAR activity.

In the present study, porous TiO2 foams (PTF) were prepared by particle-stabilized emulsion method. The samples having solid contents ranging from 20 wt.% to 35 wt.% were prepared and successfully impregnated with paraffin without using a surfactant. SEM images showed that the prepared PTFs had three-dimensional interpenetrating structures with good porosities. The pore structure and morphology of PTF was markedly influenced by the solid content. With increase in solid content, porosity decreased, along with a decrease in the homologous encapsulation ratio of paraffin. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) evaluated the thermal properties of the paraffin/PTF (PTFP) composites. DSC results showed that with a solid content of 20 wt.%, the paraffin adsorption reached 62 vol.% and latent heat of the composite PCM was 94.05 J/g after 200 melting/freezing cycles. TGA results showed that the form-stable composite PCMs had good thermal stabilities. In order to further enhance the thermal conductivity and improve the adsorption capacity of PTF, sucrose was added to the emulsion and carbonized in situ to form carbon/PTF (PTFC). This could also be successfully impregnated with paraffin to obtain the form-stable composite paraffin/PTFC (PTFCP). The TEM images and results of XPS analysis confirmed that the surfaces of TiO2 particles were covered with a 2 nm thick carbon film (C/TiO2). The thermal conductivity of PTFCP increased from 0.302 W/m K to 1.059 W/m K compared to PTFP, along with a further improvement in adsorption capacity. Furthermore, the results of FT-IR analysis and thermal cyclic tests showed that the form-stable composite PCMs had good chemical stability and thermal reliability after 200 melting/freezing cycles. Therefore, the prepared form-stable composite PCMs having excellent pore structures, thermal properties, thermal reliabilities, and chemical stabilities are promising PCM candidates for heat energy storage applications.

The waste management as the interface between human daily life and environment is an important part in rural region. However, the micro-scale process analysis from the perspective of an integrated rural water-food-energy system has not been well investigated to reveal the effects brought by waste management on local environment. The lack of relevant evidence is a major barrier to realize the specific quantitative impacts of distinct waste management systems and the importance of sustainable waste management for local area. In this study, a material and energy flow analysis based on processes is presented in a micro-scale to make systematical comparison between end-pipe-treatment waste management and modern resource-oriented waste management. The results indicated that waste management notably affects the nitrogen and phosphorus flow in rural areas. Moreover, the resource-oriented system can obviously optimize the local water-food-energy nexus in terms of energy recovery and nutrient consumption. Based on the quantity analysis, chemical fertilizer is also found inevitable to guarantee the food supply because of the element system loss in various paths. Besides, the simultaneous optimum point of different nutrient elements is difficult to achieve due to their distinct transfer mechanisms. Our results can help policymakers and publics make better choice in waste management strategy.

The recycling of low-cost resources from waste biomass is a promising strategy towards circular bioeconomy. Food waste is an ideal candidate to produce cost-effective glucose. However several problems such as insolubility of macromolecular substances hindered the valorization of food waste. To recover reducing sugar efficiently, a two-stage enzymatic hydrolysis platform was developed, where the alpha-amylase was used at the first stage and glucoamylase followed. Results showed that the enzymatic hydrolysis was more efficient in comparison with acidic and alkali hydrolysis. The optimum pH and dosage for alpha-amylase and glucoamylase were determined to be 5.5 and 150 U/g total solid (TS), and 4.0 and 150 U/g-TS, respectively. The hybrid hydrolysis was more effective in catalyzing starch, obtaining the highest reducing sugar concentration of 204.2 g/L. Analysis of the physicochemical structures indicated that the solid particles could be broken thoroughly by the two enzymes, resulting in sharp decrease of the particle size and viscosity compared with the control. The mass balance and economic assessment verified the feasibility and profitability of the two stage enzymatic hydrolysis. The features of the two-stage platform widened the door to the further production of value-added biochemicals using the sugars recovered from food wastes.

DNA topoisomerases essentially remove topological strains generated during DNA replication, transcription, DNA repair, and other cytogenetic processes. However, distinct expression level and prognostic significance of individual topoisomerase isoforms in gastric cancer (GC) remain largely unexplored. In this study, we utilized Oncomine and Kaplan-Meier plotter database to detect the mRNA expression level of individual topoisomerase isoforms as well as assess their prognostic significance in GC patients. With the exception of TOP3B and TOP2B, levels of all topoisomerase isoforms were found to be elevated in GC patients when compared to the normal tissues. Elevated expression of TOP1 and TOP1MT was relevant to longer overall survival (OS) in GC and gastric intestinal type adenocarcinoma (GITA) patients, but not in diffuse gastric adenocarcinoma (DFA) patients. Increased expression of TOP2A and TOP2B was related to better OS in GC, as well as in GITA and DFA patients. In contrast, increased expression TOP3A and TOP3B was associated with shorter OS in GC, as well as in GITA and DFA patients. We also applied the Tumor IMmune Estimation Resource (TIMER) tool to assess the correlations between distinct topoisomerase isoforms and the infiltrating immune cell landscape. Furthermore, we found that down-regulating the expression of TOP3A by shRNA significantly inhibited the proliferation and colony formation in GC cells compared to control shRNA treated cells. Thus our study lays the framework for utilizing topoisomerases in better understanding the complexity and heterogeneity of GC and for developing strategies for novel customized therapy in GC patients.

The BiOCl: Eu3+ phosphors were synthesized, utilizing a solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure and morphology of the Eu3+-doped BiOCl were elucidated. The Eu3+-activated BiOCl phosphors showed broad adsorption in the near-ultraviolet region, which emitted intense red emission with the color purity of 71.8%. The quantum yield of the Bi0.95OCl: 0.05Eu3+ phosphor was found to be 0.323. Moreover, the recorded temperature-dependent luminescence spectra indicate that the emission intensity at 150 °C could still remain 80% of that at room temperature, which also verified an excellent thermal resistance performance for the Bi0.95OCl: 0.05Eu3+ sample, which have great potential for indoor illumination.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a malignancy caused by the uncontrolled and dysregulated clonal expansion of abnormal myeloid primordial cells. In general, the prognosis of AML remains poor despite new discoveries in its pathogenesis and treatment. It is crucial to find early and sensitive biomarkers and continue to explore active targeted treatments. Interferon-induced transmembrane protein (IFITM) family is an important part of the interferon signaling pathway and participate in the regulation of immune cell signaling, adhesion, cancer, and liver cell migration. However, the clinical and prognostic value of the IFITM family in AML has rarely been studied. We screened The Cancer Genome Atlas database and found 155 AML patients with IFITM family (IFITM1-5) expression data. In patients who only received chemotherapy, those with high IFITM3 expression had significantly shorter event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) than patients with low expression (all P 0.05). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that high IFITM3 expression was an independent risk factor for EFS and OS in patients only received chemotherapy (all P 0.05). In patients who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), however, all IFITM members had no impact on either EFS or OS. In conclusion, our study elucidated that high IFITM3 expression could be an adverse prognostic factor for AML, whose effect might be overcome by allo-HSCT.

This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research. Based on the temporal-spatial stochastic radiation field, microwave staring correlated imaging (MSCI) can achieve high resolution reconstruction of the target. When MCSI is applied in remote sensing, the imaging area will be very large. With the increasing of imaging equation scale, the ill-conditioned problem will seriously influence the resolution of imaging. This paper focuses on the algorithm to realize high-resolution MSCI in condition of large imaging area. Inspired by multigrid (MG) method, we use multigrid (MG) method to decrease the low-frequency error and highfrequency error of the solution by dealing with the imaging equation in different scales. Furthermore, we apply Least Square QR-factorization (LSQR) algorithm to solve the large scale ill-conditioned equation. We name the new algorithm as MG-LSQR. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm could increase the resolution efficiently in condition of large imaging area.

Radar correlated imaging (RCI) is a novel modality to obtain high resolution target images by correlated process of stochastic radiation field and the received signals. Conventional RCI methods neglect the inherent structure information of complex extended target, which makes the quality of recovery result degraded. Thus a clustered sparse Bayesian learning with Laplace prior (La-CSBL) algorithm for extended target imaging is proposed in this paper. A hierarchical correlated Laplace prior model is introduced to consider both the sparse prior and the cluster prior, and the prior for each coefficient not only involves its own hyperparameter, but also its immediate neighbor hyperparameters. Then the algorithm alternates between steps of target reconstruction and parameter optimization by cyclic minimization method under the Bayesian maximum a posteriori framework. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm could realize high resolution imaging efficiently for extended target.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region experiences frequent heavy haze pollution in fall and winter. Pollution was often exacerbated by unfavorable atmospheric boundary layer (BL) conditions. The topography in this region impacts the BL processes in complex ways. Such impacts and implications on air quality are not yet clearly understood. The BL processes in all four seasons in BTH are thus investigated in this study using idealized simulations with the WRF-Chem model. Results suggest that seasonal variation of thermal conditions and synoptic patterns significantly modulates BL processes. In fall, with a relatively weak northwesterly synoptic forcing, thermal contrast between the mountains and the plain leads to a prominent mountain-plain breeze circulation (MPC). In the afternoon, the downward branch of the MPC, in addition to northwesterly warm advection, suppresses BL development over the western side of BTH. In the eastern coastal area, a sea-breeze circulation develops late in the morning and intensifies during the afternoon. In summer, southeasterly BL winds allow the see-breeze front to penetrate farther inland (∼150 km from the coast), and the MPC is less prominent. In spring and winter, with strong northwesterly synoptic winds, the sea-breeze circulation is confined in the coastal area, and the MPC is suppressed. The BL height is low in winter due to strong near-surface stability, while BL heights are large in spring due to strong mechanical forcing. The relatively low BL height in fall and winter may have exacerbated the air pollution, thus contributing to the frequent severe haze events in the BTH region.

Paraffin/expanded vermiculite with modified porous carbon layer was prepared in the study. In the composite phase change materials (PCM), expanded vermiculite was impregnated with sucrose in the layer and then carbonated in situ in order to enhance thermal conductivity and improve the adsorption capacity of expanded vermiculite, which acted as a carrier material in the preparation of the form-stable PCM. SEM images showed the morphology of expanded vermiculite had been changed after carbonation. A series of micro-pores had been formed among the layers of expanded vermiculite with the diameter ranging from several microns to 120 μm. Thermal properties of the composite PCM were determined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis. According to DSC analysis results, when the paraffin adsorption reached 53.2 wt.%, latent heats of the composite PCM were respectively 101.14 J/g at the freezing temperature of 48.85 °C and 103 J/g at the melting temperature of 53.1 °C. TGA results showed that the form-stable composite PCM presented good thermal stability. Due to the formation of carbon structure in the layer of expanded vermiculite, the thermal conductivity of the supporting materials was improved, thus slightly decreasing the extrapolated onset melting temperature of pure paraffin. Furthermore, the results of FT-IR analysis and thermal cycling tests showed that the form-stable composite PCM had good chemical stability and thermal reliability after 200 melting/freezing cycles. The form-stable composite PCM with good thermal properties, thermal reliability, and chemical stability is the promising PCM for the low-temperature thermal energy storage applications.

Low-temperature PCMs are always the objects of prime investigations, however, the field of PCM’s application is not only limited to low temperatures. In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG), lithium nitrate (LiNO3), and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) were respectively employed as the low-, middle- and high-temperature storage medium. A series of novel form-stable phase change materials (fs-PCMs) were tailor-made by blending diatomite and the three PCMs via a vacuum impregnation method or a facile mixing and sintering method. Various techniques were employed to characterize their structural and thermal properties. The maximum loads of PEG, LiNO3, and Na2SO4 in diatomite powder could respectively reach 58%, 60%, and 65%, while PCM melts during the solid–liquid phase transformation. SEM, XRD, and FT-IR results indicated that PCMs were well dispersed into diatomite pores and no chemical changes took place during the heating and cooling process. The prepared fs-PCMs were quite stable in terms of thermal and chemical manner even after a 200-cycle of melting and freezing. The resulting composite fs-PCMs were promising candidates to satisfy the application requirements for different temperature ranges due to their large latent heats and suitable phase change temperatures, as well as the excellent chemical compatibility, improved supercooling extent, and high thermal stability.

The immobilization behaviors of Zn(II) and Cd(II) by wheat straw (WS) biochars could vary with the soil conditions. In the acidic environment, WS biochars produced at low temperature were more competent than those produced at high temperature on Zn(II) and Cd(II) immobilization; while WS biochars produced at high temperature were more effective than those produced at low temperature in the alkaline environment. The ions in the porewater could compromise the sorption capacities of Zn(II) and Cd(II) by WS biochars in acidic soils, while could enhance them in alkaline soils. For biochars produced at the same temperature, residence time had little effect on their behaviors of Zn(II) and Cd(II) immobilization. Only a small portion of immobilized Zn(II)/Cd(II) could be released from WS biochar in the simulated acid rain. Compared with Zn(II)/Cd(II) adsorbed on the acidic functional groups, Zn(II)/Cd(II) precipitates were more stable in 0.01 M CaCl2 solution. Most of the Zn(II) and Cd(II) species on biochar could be released in 1 mM citric acid solution. The immobilized Zn(II) and Cd(II) on WS biochar are likely to be released into the soil environment in the long run.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are electrophilic chemical species produced from incomplete oxidation. They have long been known as aggressive molecules that lead to direct tissue and cellular damage. Recent studies have reconsidered ROS as second messengers in the initiation and amplification of cell signaling, but how ROS regulate lung tissue and immune cell remain unknown. In this study, we used a LPS-induced acute lung injury (ALI) mouse model to observe disease, progression and determine ROS-related immune responses. We found that ROS play an essential pathogenic role in ALI, however, the major role of ROS in exacerbating ALI was increasing bronchoalveolar fluid (BALF) B cells rather than eliciting tissue damage. Plant canopy reconstruction is the fundamental and central problem of functional-structural plant modeling. In order to reconstruct geometric models of plant canopy by real-time image driving, this paper proposes a framework of imagebased maize canopy modeling. The framework builds field image and meteorological data acquisition system to acquire real-time information of plant canopy, then extracts plant growth position and plant azimuthal plane of each plant in the canopy. Morphological parameters of plants are generated using crop model. Finally, geometric model of target canopies are reconstructed by parametric modeling and self-regulating from the image extracted coverage parameter. Experimental results shows that the average coverage error of five treatment maize canopies is 2.57% and LAI errors are smaller than ±1%. Light distribution verification average error of five canopies is 8.02%. This framework will provide technical support for maize field growth analysis and decision making based on Internet of things.

Shape-stabilized composite phase change materials (ss-CPCMs) composed of PEG (polyethylene glycol) and MCS (mesoporous calcium silicate) were prepared by a facile blending and impregnating method. Various techniques were employed to characterize their structural and thermal properties. The supercooling extent, melting time and solidifying time of the ss-CPCM were respectively 25%, 28.2%, and 27.3% less than those of PEG. The characterization results by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) technique indicated that the PEG/MCS ss-CPCM was a good candidate for building applications due to its large latent heat, suitable phase change temperature, and good thermal reliability. The crystallinity of PEG in the ss-CPCMs decreased with the increase of MCS content. We proposed the possible formation mechanism of PEG/MCS and concluded that the thermal properties of the PEG/MCS were influenced by the adsorption confinement of the PEG molecule chains in the mesoporous structure of MCS and the interference of MCS as an impurity in the perfect PEG crystallization. Interestingly, the melting temperature of the new ss-CPCMs could be adjusted from 34.16 °C to 58.13 °C and the solidifying temperature could be adjusted from 27.21 °C to 44.10 °C. Corresponding latent heats of the melting and solidifying processes were 97.79–128.18 J/g and 85.41–114.19 J/g, respectively.

Coal gangue (CG), a complex solid waste from coal industry, is still underutilized, thus leading to disposal problems. However, high contents of silica and alumina in this material make it a potential zeolite precursor. In this paper, pure, single-phase and highly crystalline Na-A zeolite (NAZ) with high Ca 2+ -exchange capacity (CEC) was successfully synthesized with coal gangue as raw materials via the in-situ crystallization technique. Firstly, in order to provide part or all of active SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 species, CG was decarbonized at 800 °C to form an X-ray amorphous material. Secondly, hydrothermal treatment was performed in aqueous alkali to form the NAZ crystal. Moreover, we explored several factors in the formation of NAZ:NaOH concentration, crystallization temperature, and crystallization time. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), N 2 -adsorption–desorption measurements, and CEC testing. Compared to the commercial-grade NAZ, the NAZ prepared from CG could be an alternative material for the phosphorus-containing additives in the detergent industry.

A novel polyethylene glycol (PEG)/SiO2 shape-stabilized composite phase change material (ss-CPCM) was prepared with the ‘hazardous waste’ oil shale ash. In this composite, PEG serves as the phase change material for thermal energy storage and SiO2 acts as the carrier matrix to provide structural strength and prevent the leakage of melted PEG. The calcination-alkali leaching method was applied to prepare the sodium silicate solution with the ash. When the calcination temperature, calcination time, sodium hydroxide concentration, reaction time and liquid/solid ratio were 900 °C, 60 min, 20 wt%, 4 h, and 4 mL/g, respectively, the silica extraction efficiency could reach 60.36%. Then the PEG/SiO2 ss-CPCM was prepared with sodium silicate solution as the precursor via the temperature-assisted sol–gel method without any co-solvent or surfactant. Various characterization techniques were adopted to study the structures and properties of the prepared PEG/SiO2 ss-CPCM. SEM, FT-IR, and XRD results indicated that PEG was well encapsulated and that no chemical change took place during the phase change process. TGA results showed that the composite presented an excellent thermal stability. DSC analysis results indicated that the composite had considerably high phase change enthalpy, encapsulation ratio, encapsulation efficiency and thermal storage capability. Moreover, the supercooling extent, melting and solidifying time of the composite were respectively 22.3%, 26.5% and 22.6% less than those of pristine PEG. Based on the element analysis, there are no safety hazards for the prepared ss-CPCM to be seen as a potential candidate for thermal energy storage applications in building envelopes.

The chemokine receptor CXCR7 is regarded as a scavenger receptor for CXCL12, and induces numerous key steps in tumor growth and metastasis. However, the exact molecular mechanism of CXCR7 regulation in breast tumor angiogenesis remains unknown. In the present study, the function of CXCR7 in breast tumors was investigated in vitro and in vivo. The breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cell line was used. Pharmacological inhibition of CXCR7 by CCX771 reduced breast tumor invasion, adhesion and metastasis. Furthermore, CXCR7 was essential for the tube formation of HUVECs in vitro, and for blood vessel formation in a Matrigel plug assay in vivo. In addition, vascular endothelial growth factor expression was also decreased in CCX771-treated MDA-MB-231 cells, indicating that CCX771 regulates tumor angiogenesis. The present results indicated that CXCR7 regulated breast cancer metastasis at multiple stages; additional understanding of CXCR7 in tumor environments may develop anti-metastatic therapy.

Radar correlated imaging (RCI) introduces the optical correlated imaging technology to traditional microwave imaging, which has raised widespread concern recently. Conventional RCI methods neglect the structural information of complex extended target, which makes the quality of recovery result not really perfect, thus a novel combination of negative exponential restraint and total variation (NER-TV) algorithm for extended target imaging is proposed in this paper. The sparsity is measured by a sequential order one negative exponential function, then the 2D total variation technique is introduced to design a novel optimization problem for extended target imaging. And the proven alternating direction method of multipliers is applied to solve the new problem. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm could realize high resolution imaging efficiently for extended target.

Detailed analysis of canopy structural heterogeneity is an essential step in conducting parameters for a canopy structural model. This paper aims to analyze the structural heterogeneity of a cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L.) canopy by means of analyzing leaf distribution in a greenhouse environment with natural sunlight and also to assess the effect of structural canopy heterogeneity on light interception and photosynthesis. Two experiments and four measurements were carried out in autumn 2011 and spring 2012. A static virtual three-dimensional (3D) canopy structure was reconstructed using a 3D digitizing method. The diurnal variation of photosynthesis rate was measured using CIRAS-2 photosynthesis system. The results showed that, leaf azimuth as tested with the Rayleigh-test was homogeneous at vine tip over stage but turned heterogeneous at fruit harvest stage. After eliminating the influence of the environment on the azimuth using the von Mises-Fisher method, the angle between two successive leaves was 144°; at the same time, a rule for the azimuth distribution in the canopy was established, stating that the azimuth distribution in cucumber followed a law which was positive spin and anti-spin. Leaf elevation angle of south-oriented leaves was on average 13.8° higher than that of north-oriented leaves. The horizontal distribution of light interception and photosynthesis differed significantly between differently oriented leaves. East- and west-oriented leaves exhibited the highest photosynthetic rate. In conclusion, detailed analysis of canopy structural heterogeneity in this study indicated that leaf azimuth and elevation angle were heterogeneous in cucumber canopy and they should be explicitly described as they have a great impact both on light distribution and photosynthesis.

To develop a more efficient support for free titania nanoparticles, the processing of particle-stabilized wet foams into macroporous carbon-covered alumina (CCA) supports was investigated in this study. The prepared supports had hierarchical pore structures consisting of pores with average cell sizes less than 2 μm uniformly distributed on the walls of the macropores (>150 μm). Furthermore, the carbon coverage and thus the pore size could be effectively controlled by tuning the sucrose content in the precursor. In particular, the cell diameter of the CCA foams decreased from 500 to 150 μm with increasing sucrose content in the initial suspension from 10 wt.% to 40 wt.%. The hierarchical pore structures led to a strong adsorption capacity for organic dyes. Thus, the macroporous CCA/TiO 2 catalysts showed about 16% higher photocatalytic degradation rates toward rhodamine B under ultraviolet light irradiation than do commercial free titania nanocatalysts.

To evaluate meibomian gland (MG) alterations in patients with primary chronic dacryocystitis (PCD) by in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM), and to correlate the finding with clinical presentation.Twenty-eight eyes with the diagnosis of PCD and their contralateral unaffected eyes were studied and compared with 27 normal controls. All subjects completed an Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire (OSDI) and underwent slit-lamp biomicroscopy examination, tear break-up time (BUT) measurements, fluorescein staining, Schirmer test I, and an IVCM examination of the MG. IVCM parameters, including the MG acinar unit density (MGAUD), periglandular inflammatory cell density (ICD), MG acinar unit longest diameter (MGALD), and MG acinar unit shortest diameter (MGASD) and their correlation with clinical data were analyzed.The mean MG expressibility scores, BUT values, and staining scores were significantly worse in eyes with PCD compared with the contralateral clinically unaffected eyes and controls (p 0.05). A significant decrease in MGAUD was observed in PCD eyes compared with the controls and the contralateral clinically unaffected eyes. Conversely, the mean ICD and MGASD values were significantly higher in the PCD eyes. There were no significant differences in mean MGALD value between the PCD eyes and the contralateral clinically unaffected eyes. In addition, there were significant changes in the IVCM parameters in the contralateral unaffected eyes compared with the controls, including MGAUD, ICD, MGALD, and MGASD. All IVCM parameters showed a strong, significant correlation with MG dropout grades, MG expressibility, fluorescein staining scores, and OSDI values (all p 0.05).Patients with unilateral PCD demonstrated significant changes in MG as compared with the contralateral clinically unaffected eyes and controls. The MG function should be closely observed in these patients.

The work involves the fabrication, characterization, and thermal properties of polyethylene glycol (PEG)/diatomite powder (DP), which can be used as a novel shape-stabilized composite phase change material (CPCM). The maximum load of PEG in DP can reach 55% while PEG melts during solid–liquid phase transformation. Differential scanning calorimeter results indicated that the melting temperature of the new CPCMs could be adjusted from 34 to 59°C and that the solidifying temperature could be adjusted from 27 to 44°C. Corresponding latent heats of the melting and solidifying processes were 77.27–106.5 J/g and 72.07–94.93 J/g, respectively. Scanning electronic microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction results indicated that PEG was well dispersed in diatomite pores and no chemical changes took place during thermal cyclic test. Thermo-gravimetric analysis indicated that the CPCMs had good thermal and chemical stability and reliability when diatomite was immersed into melting PEG at 75°C for 90 min. Thermal conductivity of the CPCMs increased from 0.36 to 0.71 W/mK after adding 10 wt% expanded graphite (EG). POLYM. COMPOS., 2014. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers

Nitrided LaMgAl 11 O 19 phosphors were prepared by a two-step method involving synthesis at 1550 °C for 4 h, trituration, and firing at 1650 °C for 5 h under a nitrogen atmosphere. Nitrogen was doped into LaMgAl 11 O 19 and bonded with aluminium atoms. The nitrided LaMgAl 11 O 19 phosphors showed plate-like morphology with a rough surface and exhibited strong blue emission at 442 nm and 450 nm, which may be attributed to the energy transition between defect levels. A weak emission band at 590 nm was ascribed to the transition between the V Al acceptor and the valence band, which was excited at 254 nm.

A method and software tool for measuring and reconstructing small plant in real time was presented. The key of this method lies in the feature points measuring with 3D digitizer and organ templates-based details 3D reconstructing. Firstly, several feature points were selected and measured by using a digitizer from the targeted plant. Then the morphological parameters of this plant could be calculated from these feature points, with its skeleton model was reconstructed in the process of measuring. For a details 3D reconstruction of the plant structure, organ’s 3D template was used, which was created by using 3D point cloud data measured from real plant organs, or created with interactive designing. This method has been tested in many plants, including crops and small fruit trees. The experiment results indicated that the proposed method is suitable for real-time measurement and multi-scale structural modeling of small plants.

Curcumin (Cur) has putative antitumor properties. In the current study, we examined photophysical and photochemical properties of Cur using laser flash photolysis. The results demonstrated that Cur could be photo-ionized at 355 nm laser pulse to produce radical cation (Cur(+)) and solvated electron e(sol)(-) in 7:3 ethanol-water mixtures. The quantum yield of Cur photo-ionization and the ratio of photo-ionization to photo-excitation were also determined. Cur(+) could be transferred into neutral radical of Cur (Cur) via deprotonation with the pKa 4.13. The excited singlet of Cur ((1)Cur* could be transferred into excited triplet ((3)Cur*, which could be quenched by oxygen to produce singlet oxygen (1)O2*. Reaction of (3)Cur* with tryptophan was confirmed. The results encourage developing curcumin as a photosensitive antitumor agent.

LaMgAl11O19-3 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia ceramics were successfully prepared by pressureless sintering at 1550°C for 3 h. The ceramic's mechanical properties were measured, and the phase composition and microstructure observed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the mechanical properties of the ceramic were initially improved on addition of LaMgAl11O19, but further additions were detrimental. When the amount of LMA added was equal to 2 wt.%, the bending strength and fracture toughness reached 812 ± 37 MPa and 14.0 ± 0.3 MPa·m1/2. This equates to an increase of 8.0% and 6.9% compared with untreated 3 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) ceramic, respectively. However, the bending strength and fracture toughness both decreased when the amount of LaMgAl11O19 added was 4 and 6 wt.%. A crack propagation and force analysis of the crack tips in LaMgAl11O19-platelet-reinforced 3YSZ ceramic were also carried out. The results indicate that phase transformation and crack deflection were the dominant toughening mechanisms in the LaMgAl11O19-3YSZ ceramic. At the same time, energy dissipation by the LaMgAl11O19 platelets also helps to restrain crack propagation in the matrix, which improves toughness more effectively. © 2013 The American Ceramic Society.

To investigate the applicability of a newly developed corneal topographer in assessing tear film stability.This is a prospective, case-control study. Forty-four Chinese dry eye patients and 41 normal subjects were recruited. Noninvasive tear film break-up time (NI-BUT) was measured using a new method based on a corneal topographer equipped with modified scan software. The reliability of the measurements was determined. Then, the correlations between the NI-BUT and the traditional fluorescein tear film break-up time, Schirmer I test values, and inferior tear meniscus height measurements were determined. The receiver operating characteristic curve technique was used to evaluate the NI-BUT examination in the diagnosis of dry eye.In total, a significant difference between the NI-BUT and the fluorescein tear film break-up time was found (3.2 ± 2.3 seconds vs. 5.2 ± 3.4 seconds; P0.001). The coefficient of variation and intraclass correlation coefficient values of NI-BUT were 12.8% and 0.93, respectively, for NI-BUT for intraobserver repeatability and 15.4% and 0.88, respectively for interobserver repeatability. The NI-BUT showed a good correlation with other dry eye examinations (all P0.05). In addition, the NI-BUT was significantly shorter in dry eye patients (2.0 ± 0.2 seconds) than in normal subjects (4.3 ± 0.3 seconds; P0.001). When the cutoff value was set at2.65 seconds, the sensitivity and specificity of the test were 84.1% and 75.6%, respectively.Measurements of NI-BUT obtained with the newly developed corneal topographer may provide a simple, noninvasive screening test for dry eyes with acceptable sensitivity, specificity, and repeatability.

A striking contrast in the thermal conductivities of polyethylene glycol (PEG)/diatomite form-stable phase change composite (fs-PCC) with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNs) as nano-additive has been reported in our present study. Compared to the pure PEG, the thermal conductivity of the prepared fs-PCC has increased from 0.24 W/mK to 0.87 W/Mk with a small SWCNs loading of 2 wt%. SWCNs are decorated on the inner surface of diatomite pores whilst retaining its porous structure. Compared to PEG/diatomite fs-PCC, the melting and solidification time of the PEG/diatomite/SWCNs fs-PCC are respectively decreased by 54.7% and 51.1%, and its thermal conductivity is 2.8 times higher. The composite can contain PEG as high as 60 wt% and maintain its original shape perfectly without any PEG leakage after subjected to 200 melt-freeze cycles. DSC results indicates that the melting point of the PEG/diatomite/SWCNs fs-PCC shifts to a lower temperature while the solidification point shifts to a higher temperature due to the presence of SWCNs. Importantly, the use of SWCNs is found to have clear beneficial effects for enhancing the thermal conductivity and thermal storage/release rates, without affecting thermal properties, chemical compatibility and thermal stability. The prepared PEG/diatomite/SWCNs fs-PCC exhibits excellent chemical and thermal durability and has potential application in solar thermal energy storage and solar heating.

For the purpose of obtaining high-resolution in staring correlated imaging radar system, improving the stochastic properties of radiation sources is an effective pathway, while the frequency hopping pattern of transmitting signals is an important parameter that affects the randomness of radiation sources. In this paper, a novel concept of distribution entropy is proposed with its mathematical expression, which quantitatively describes the temporal-spatial stochastic characteristics of microwave radiation sources. Furthermore, five frequency assignment strategies of radiation sources have been designed by using genetic algorithm with the principle of maximizing the distribution entropy. Numerical simulations are performed and the results show that the designed frequency assignment strategy with high distribution entropy will improve the recovery performance of image efficiently.

Biochar is considered to be a promising material for heavy metal immobilization in soil. However, the immobilization mechanisms of Zn2+ on biochars derived from many common waste biomasses are not completely understood. Herein, biochars (denoted as PN350, PN550, WS350 and WS550) derived from pine needle (PN) and wheat straw (WS) were prepared at two pyrolysis temperatures (350 °C and 550 °C). The immobilization behaviors and mechanisms of Zn2+ on these biochars were systematically investigated. The results show that compared with biochars produced at low temperature, biochars produced at high temperature contained higher amounts of ash and exhibited much higher sorption capacities of Zn2+. By using Zn K-edge EXAFS spectroscopy, we find that the formation of various Zn precipitates/minerals, which was caused by the release of OH−, CO32− and Si species from biochar, was the immobilization mechanism of Zn2+ on PN and WS biochars. Hydrozincite and Zn(OH)2 were the main species formed on PN350, PN550 and WS350; while on WS550, besides hydrozincite, a large fraction of hemimorphite was formed. The occurrence of hydrozincite and hemimorphite on biochar during Zn2+ immobilization is firstly reported in our study, which provides a new insight into the immobilization mechanism of Zn2+ on biochar.

The aim of this study is to describe a novel histological classification for medically uncontrolled conjunctival pyogenic granulomas (MUCPG), and to explore whether the diversity in clinical features correlates to different histological subtypes of MUCPG. Methods: This is an observational cross-section case series. We reviewed 46 consecutive patients with conjunctival pyogenic granulomas who did not respond to topical corticosteroids and underwent surgical excision from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2015. Clinical features and histological findings were presented and analyzed. Results: Ocular surgery, accidental injury, and chalazion were the main predisposing causes of MUCPG. The lesions tended to occur unilaterally on the bulbar conjunctiva. Forty patients (87%) presented an enrichment of inflammatory cells and proliferated capillaries in their pathological sections (inflammatory pattern). Six patients (13%) showed relatively few inflammatory cells and capillaries within fibrous stroma (fibrous pattern). Patients with the inflammatory pattern were older ( p = 0.025) and tended to be located in bulbar conjunctiva ( p = 0.002). The predisposing causes were also different between two histological subtypes ( p = 0.007). Conclusions: We found the correlation between clinical presentation and histological subtypes in patients with MUCPG, indicating this disease may need a new classification scheme.

To compare the surgical duration and clinical outcomes of nasolacrimal recanalization versus external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) in the treatment of failed nasolacrimal duct intubation. This is a retrospective, comparative, and interventional study. We evaluated the outcomes of 66 consecutive patients undergoing either nasolacrimal recanalization (n = 32) or DCR (n = 34) in a tertiary lacrimal disease referral center. Length of surgical duration, clinical outcomes, and rate of recurrence at 18 months postoperatively were compared. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is expressed in the human corneal epithelium and stroma. It is an efficient therapy for human corneal ulcers caused by neurotropic disease. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism of NGF in healing human corneal epithelial diseases. Numerous microRNAs (miRNAs) are expressed in the cornea and miRNAs have important roles in regulating corneal development. In the present study, novel miRNA regulators were demonstrated to be involved in NGF‑induced human corneal epithelial cell (hCEC) proliferation. NGF treatment significantly downregulated the expression of miRNA‑494 in hCECs in vitro. Furthermore, miRNA‑494 increased G1 arrest in the immortalized human corneal epithelial cell (ihCEC) line and suppressed cell proliferation. Accordingly, bioinformatics programs and luciferase reporter assay demonstrated that miRNA‑494 directly targeted cyclin D1 by binding to a sequence in the 3'‑untranslated region. In addition, overexpression of miRNA‑494 decreased both basal and NGF‑induced cyclin D1 expression. NGF treatment partially suppressed miRNA‑494 expression and restored cyclin D1 expression. Furthermore, co‑transfection of miRNA‑494 with the cyclin D1 ORF clone partially restored cyclin D1 mRNA and protein expression. These findings indicate that miRNA‑494 and its target cyclin D1 may be a crucial axis for NGF in regulating the proliferation of hCEC. Specific modulation of miRNA‑494 in hCEC could represent an attractive approach for treating cornea epithelial diseases.

A series of novel composite phase change materials (PCMs) were tailored by blending PEG and five kinds of diatomite via a vacuum impregnation method. To enlarge its pore size and specific surface area, different modification approaches including calcination, acid treatment, alkali leaching and nano-silica decoration on the microstructure of diatomite were outlined. Among them, 8 min of 5 wt% NaOH dissolution at 70 °C has been proven to be the most effective and facile. While PEG melted during phase transformation, the maximum load of PEG could reach 70 wt.%, which was 46% higher than that of the raw diatomite. The apparent activation energy of PEG in the composite was 1031.85 kJ·mol−1, which was twice higher than that of the pristine PEG. Moreover, using the nano-silica decorated diatomite as carrier, the maximum PEG load was 66 wt%. The composite PCM was stable in terms of thermal and chemical manners even after 200 cycles of melting and freezing. All results indicated that the obtained composite PCMs were promising candidate materials for building applications due to its large latent heat, suitable phase change temperature, excellent chemical compatibility, improved supercooling extent, high thermal stability and long-term reliability.

The effect of an inland plateau on the tropical sea breeze is considered in terms of idealized numerical experiments, with a particular emphasis on offshore effects. The sea breeze is modeled as the response to an oscillating interior heat source over land. The parameter space for the calculations is defined by a nondimensional wind speed, a scaled plateau height, and the nondimensional heating amplitude. The experiments show that the inland plateau tends to significantly strengthen the land-breeze part of the circulation, as compared to the case without terrain. The strengthening of the land breeze is tied to blocking of the sea-breeze density current during the warm phase of the cycle. The blocked sea breeze produces a pool of relatively cold, stagnant air at the base of the plateau, which in turn produces a stronger land-breeze density current the following morning. Experiments show that the strength of the land breeze increases with the terrain height, at least for moderate values of the height. For very large terrain, the sea breeze is apparently blocked entirely, and further increases in terrain height lead to only small changes in land-breeze intensity and propagation. Details of the dynamics are described in terms of the transition from linear to nonlinear heating amplitudes, as well as for cases with and without background winds. The results show that for the present experiments, significant offshore effects are tied to nonlinear frontal propagation, as opposed to quasi-linear wave features.

The equatorial coastal circulation is modeled in terms of the linear wave response to a diurnally oscillating heat source gradient in a background wind. A diurnal scaling shows that the solution depends on two parameters: a nondimensional coastal width ℒ and a nondimensional wind speed 𝒰. The solutions are interpreted by comparing to the 𝒰 = 0 theory of Rotunno.For 𝒰 ≠ 0 the Fourier integral solution consists of three distinct wave branches. Two of these branches correspond to the prior no-wind solution of Rotunno, except with Doppler shifting and associated wave dispersion. The third branch exists only for 𝒰 ≠ 0 and is shown to be broadly similar to flow past a steady heat source or a topographic obstacle. The relative importance of this third branch is determined largely by the parameter combination 𝒰/ℒ. For sufficiently large 𝒰/ℒ the third branch becomes the dominant part of the solution.The spatial structures of the three branches are described in terms of group velocity arguments combined with a desingularized quadrature method.
