Fungi have been identified as a prolific source of structurally unique secondary metabolites, many of which display promising biological and pharmacological properties. This review provides an overview of the structures of new natural products derived from fungi and their biological activities along with the research strategies, which focuses on literature published in the representative journals in 2023. In this review, a total of 553 natural products including 219 polyketides, 145 terpenoids, 35 steroids, 106 alkaloids, and 48 peptides are presented. By summarising the latest findings, this review aims to provide a guide and inspire further innovation in the fields of the discovery of fungal natural products and pharmaceutical development. Associational effects, whereby plants influence the biotic interactions of their neighbors, are an important component of plant–insect interactions. Plant chemistry has been hypothesized to mediate these interactions. The role of chemistry in associational effects, however, has been unclear in part because the diversity of plant chemistry makes it difficult to tease apart the importance and roles of particular classes of compounds. We examined the chemical ecology of associational effects using backcross‐bred plants of the Solanum pennellii introgression lines. We used eight genotypes from the introgression line system to establish 14 unique neighborhood treatments that maximized differences in acyl sugars, proteinase inhibitor, and terpene chemical diversity. We found that the chemical traits of the neighboring plant, rather than simply the number of introgression lines within a neighborhood, influenced insect abundance on focal plants. Furthermore, within‐chemical class diversity had contrasting effects on herbivore and predator abundances, and depended on the frequency of neighboring plant chemotypes. Notably, we found insect mobility—flying versus crawling—played a key role in insect response to phytochemistry. We highlight that the frequency and chemical phenotype of plant neighbors underlie associational effects and suggest this may be an important mechanism in maintaining intraspecific phytochemical variation within plant populations. In this study, the efficacy of antioxidants found in pequi leaves was examined for safeguarding pequi biodiesel (EBP) against oxidation. The results reveal notable achievements. The antioxidant activity of AFP (a pequi leaf antioxidant additive) was assessed at various concentrations, demonstrating that as the concentration of AFP increases, the inhibition percentage significantly rises, reaching a remarkable inhibition of 99.12% at 100 mg L−1, with a calculated IC50 of 25.4 mg L−1. Additionally, the analysis of the AFP composition revealed the presence of terpenes and oxygenated compounds, which are well known for their antioxidant properties. Furthermore, the research emphasized the significance of thermogravimetric analysis in evaluating the thermal stability of additives, identifying critical temperatures at which AFP begins to protect biodiesel against oxidation (247.18°C) and the point at which its effectiveness may diminish (469.19°C). The EBP met quality standards regarding acidity, water content and density, but exhibited slightly lower oxidative stability compared with established standards. The correlation between the thermal degradation of biodiesel and the induction period highlighted the efficacy of AFP in mitigating thermal degradation. The use of natural substances in cancer treatment is gaining popularity due to their potentially lower side effects compared to radiation or chemotherapy. The development of these substances for the treatment of cancer has been successful. New technologies now incorporate nanoformulations for nanomedicines that are intended to increase the anticancer potential of drugs synthesized from phytocompounds. Essential oil from Catharanthus roseus plant was extracted and incorporated into IA-NE and assess anticancer activity of synthesized formulation against breast cancer. The 9, 10-dimethylbenz[a] anthracene (DMBA) induced rat mammary tumor model was used to evaluate anticancer properties of biosynthesized nanoemulsion Nanoemulsions was examined for in vitro cytotoxicity activity, anti-cancer effects, and physicochemical characteristics. Study findings demonstrated that incensole acetate mediated nanoemulsion may successfully improve tumor parameters, oxidative stress enzyme levels and over expressed WWP1 level in DMBA induced rats. The present investigations indicate the effect of nanoemulsion to reduce expression level of WWP1 gene significantly in breast cancer induced model. Therefore, this nanoformulation is considered a key therapeutic agent for future cancer treatment, pending extensive molecular studies. Blister beetles (Coleoptera: Meloidae) are currently subdivided into three subfamilies: Eleticinae (a basal group), Nemognathinae, and Meloinae. These are all characterized by the endogenous production of the defensive terpene cantharidin (CA), whereas the two most derived subfamilies show a hypermetamorphic larval development. Here, we provide novel draft genome assemblies of five species sampled across the three blister beetle subfamilies (Iselma pallidipennis, Stenodera caucasica, Zonitis immaculata, Lydus trimaculatus, and Mylabris variabilis) and performed a comparative analysis with other available Meloidae genomes and the closely‐related canthariphilous species (Pyrochroa serraticornis) to disclose adaptations at a molecular level. Our results highlighted the expansion and selection of genes potentially responsible for CA production and metabolism, as well as its mobilization and vesicular compartmentalization. Furthermore, we observed adaptive selection patterns and gain of genes devoted to epigenetic regulation, development, and morphogenesis, possibly related to hypermetamorphosis. We hypothesize that most genetic adaptations occurred to support both CA biosynthesis and hypermetamorphosis, two crucial aspects of Meloidae biology that likely contributed to their evolutionary success. Macrophorins H (4) and L (5), two rare HMG-conjugate macrophorins along with three known macrophorins (1-3), three DMOA-derived meroterpenoids (6-8) and two ergosterol derivates (9-10) were isolated from sterilized rice medium cultured Penicillium sp. NX-05-G-3. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR. The cytotoxicities of all compounds were evaluated, and compounds 1 and 2 showed extensive cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines Hela, SCC15, MDA-MB-453 and A549, with IC50 values ranging from 17.6 to 32.8 µM. Investigation of the fruits of Rhododendron molle G. Don led to the isolation of three new grayanane-type diterpenoids, rhodomolleins LIV-LVI (1-3). The structures and absolute configurations of new compounds were fully elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, including HRESIMS, 1 D and 2 D NMR data. Compounds 1-3 were evaluated for analgesic activities utilizing an acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice. Compound 1 showed a significant antinociceptive effect with writhe inhibition rates of 72.9% and 100% at doses of 6 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg in mice, respectively. The binding mode of 1 to N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor (NSF, PDB: 6IP2) was explored by molecular docking, indicating the presence of hydrogen bond interactions which account for its analgesic activity. Tea is a recommended way of administration of prescribed cannabis plant products in Denmark. We aimed to investigate the cannabinoid and terpene doses contained in different teas. We analysed tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabidiol (CBD), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), and terpene concentrations in three repeated preparations of each type of tea, and in plant material. In standard tea, concentrations of THC were [median (min‐max)] 9.5 (2.3–15), 19 (13–34), and 36 (26–57) μg/mL for products with a labelled content of 6.3%, 14%, and 22% total THC (THC + THCA), respectively. The CBD concentration in tea from a product labelled with 8% total CBD (CBD + CBDA) was 7.5 (1.9–10) μg/mL. Based on this, the recommended starting amount of 0.2 L of the different teas would contain between 0.46 and 11.3 mg THC, and 0.38 to 2.0 mg CBD. Adding creamer before, but not after boiling, increased the THC and CBD concentration 2.3–4.4 and 2.1‐fold, respectively. Terpenes were detected in plant material, but not in tea. The study elucidates THC and CBD doses in different teas, which may assist the clinician's choice of cannabis product. Main conclusion: MpMYB02, a regulator of marchantin accumulation, also acts as a key regulator of oil body formation. MpMYB02 induces the expression of MpSYP12B and promotes oil body formation, subsequently leading to marchantin accumulation. The oil body observed in Marchantia polymorpha is a cellular organelle surrounded by a unit membrane, accumulating various secondary metabolites such as marchantins and terpenes. We observed that oil body formation is regulated by MpMYB02, a key regulator of marchantin accumulation. In the Mpmyb02 mutant, no oil bodies were observed, although idioblast-like cells were present in the gemma. We introduced MpMYB02-glucocorticoid receptor (GR), a steroid-inducible transcriptional activator, into Mpmyb02 and assessed the effect of dexamethasone (DEX) on oil body formation. Following DEX treatment, transformed liverworts began forming oil bodies within 12 h. During the initial stages of oil body development, we observed the aggregation of small globular structures. DEX treatment upregulated several genes implicated in oil body formation, including MpSYP12B. Trichomes, which are special structures on the surfaces of plants, play an important role in plant defense. Trichomes in tomatoes are composed of multiple cells that are divided into glandular and non-glandular trichomes. Glandular trichomes can secrete a diverse array of specialized metabolites and terpenes are the main types. Previous studies have shown that JA and TOR signaling are associated with trichomes, and there may be an interaction between these, but the mechanism remains unclear. In this study, JA signaling and its key transcription factor SlMYC1 were shown to regulate the transcript levels of terpene synthesis precursor-related genes (MEP/MVA pathways). SlTOR positively regulated the formation of type VI trichomes through GC-MS, qRT-PCR, and transient transgenic assays, and the synthesis and accumulation of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were positively regulated through the expression of key genes for terpene synthesis. Subsequently, SlTOR was the direct target of SlMYC1 by yeast one-hybrid, GUS, and transient expression assays. Collectively, this study revealed that tomato trichomes were regulated by SlTOR, and SlMYC1 mediated the growth and development of trichomes and the synthesis of terpenes by directly binding the promoter of SlTOR to activate its expression. Plumeria rubra L. is an ornamental Caribbean plant widely known for its ethnobotanical uses and pharmacological activities. The 'Tonda Palermitana' cultivar, on which no data are to date available, is commonly cultivated in Sicily. The aim of our study was to characterize the micro-morphological features of leaves and flowers of this cultivar by light and Scanning Electron Microscopy and to investigate the phytochemical profile and the biological properties of their food-grade extracts (LE and FE, respectively) by LC-DAD-ESI-MS analysis and different in vitro assays. Numerous branched laticifers were observed, and their secretion contained alkaloids and lipophilic compounds as confirmed by histological analyses. Phytochemical analyses showed the presence of alkaloids (9%), terpenoids (13%) and fatty acids (6%), together with a very abundant presence of iridoids (28%) and polyphenols (39%). The most notable biological activity of both extracts appears to be the antioxidant one, showing half-inhibitory concentrations (IC50) about 5 times lower than those detected in anti-inflammatory assays (383.74 ± 5.65 and 232.05 ± 2.87 vs. 1981.23 ± 12.82 and 1215.13 ± 10.15, for FE and LE, respectively), with LE showing the best, and statistically significant (p < 0.001), biological activity. Rhododendron, a globally popular ornamental flower, is nevertheless limited in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying its fragrance formation. Notably, terpenoids are the most prevalent volatile metabolite produced by plants. In this study, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) and transcriptomics sequencing were conducted to analyze the synthesis mechanisms of terpenoid fragrance compounds of petals in fragrant R. fortunei Lindl. (YJ) and non-fragrant R. "Nova Zembla" (NW). The results identified that (-)-myrtenol, linalool, pinene, myrtenyl acetate, and terpineol were key floral aroma substances in YJ. Furthermore, an analysis of KEGG enrichment and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) revealed that the bud and decay stages exhibited the highest number of enriched DEGs among different aroma types, indicating these as critical stages for the synthesis of terpenoid floral compounds. In this study, a structural gene, denoted as RfFDPS, was identified as a negative regulatory gene for monoterpene accumulation and a positive regulatory gene for sesquiterpene accumulation in YJ. Utilizing subcellular localization technology, we determined that RfFDPS proteins are located in the cytoplasm. A functional analysis through transient expression and gene silencing of RfFDPS demonstrated its ability to regulate the accumulation of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. The overexpression of RfFDPS led to an increase in the expression of structural genes related to terpenoid synthesis, resulting in a decrease in monoterpenes and an increase in sesquiterpenes. Conversely, gene silencing had the opposite effect. In conclusion, RfFDPS plays a pivotal role in the synthesis and release of terpenoid volatile compounds in YJ petals, laying a solid theoretical foundation for the cultivation and enhancement of aromatic R. species. An undesirable sensory attribute ("floral taint") has recently been detected in red wines from some winegrowing jurisdictions in North America (e.g., Ontario, British Columbia, Washington), caused by the introduction of frost-killed leaves and petioles [materials-other-than-grapes (MOG)] during mechanical harvest and winemaking. It was hypothesized that terpenes, norisoprenoids, and higher alcohols would be the main responsible compounds. The objectives were to investigate the causative volatile compounds for floral taint and explore threshold concentrations for this problem. Commercial wines displaying varying intensities of floral taint were subjected to GC-MS and sensory analysis. Several odor-active compounds were higher in floral-tainted wines, including terpenes (geraniol, citronellol, cis- and trans-rose oxide), norisoprenoids (β-damascenone, β-ionone), five ethyl esters, and three alcohols. Thereafter, fermentations of Cabernet Franc (CF) and Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) (2016, 2017) were conducted. MOG treatments were (w/w): 0, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 5% petioles, and 0, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2% leaf blades. Terpenes (linalool, geraniol, nerol, nerolidol, citronellol, citral, cis- and trans-rose oxides, eugenol, myrcene), norisoprenoids (α- and β-ionone), and others (e.g., hexanol, octanol, methyl and ethyl salicylate) increased linearly/quadratically with increasing MOG levels in both cultivars. Principal components analysis separated MOG treatments from the controls, with 5% petioles and 2% leaves as extremes. Increasing MOG levels in CF wines increased floral aroma intensity, primarily associated with terpenes, higher alcohols, and salicylates. Increased leaf levels in CF were associated with higher vegetal and earthy attributes. Increased petioles in CS were not correlated with floral aromas, but increased leaves increased floral, vegetal, and herbaceous attributes. Overall, petioles contributed more to floral taint than leaves through increased terpenes and salicylates (floral notes), while leaves predominantly contributed norisoprenoids and C6 alcohols (green notes). Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignant cancer of the head and neck, with high morbidity and mortality, ranking as the sixth most common cancer in the world. The treatment of OSCC is mainly radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery, however, the prognosis of patients is still poor and the recurrence rate is high. This paper reviews the range of effects of natural medicinal plant active ingredients (NMPAIs) on OSCC cancer, including the types of NMPAIs, anti-cancer mechanisms, involved signaling pathways, and clinical trials. The NMPAIs include terpenoids, phenols, flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, coumarins, and volatile oils. These active ingredients inhibit proliferation, induce apoptosis and autophagy, inhibit migration and invasion of OSCC cells, and regulate cancer immunity to exert anti-cancer effects. The mechanism involves signaling pathways such as mitogen-activated protein kinase, phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase/protein kinase B, nuclear factor kappa B, miR-22/WNT1/β-catenin and Nrf2/Keap1. Clinically, NMPAIs can inhibit the growth of OSCC, and the combined drug is more effective. Natural medicinal plants are promising candidates for the treatment of OSCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

However, it is crucial to ensure the safety and proper metabolism of these extracts in pets. This review highlights the health benefits of plant extracts in pet diets, aiming to improve dietary practices and overall well-being of companion animals. Plant extracts, derived from various natural sources, encompass primary and secondary metabolites, which include plant polysaccharides, polyphenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, terpenes, and volatile oils. These compounds exhibit a range of biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial functions. Currently, polyphenols and other bioactive compounds are being incorporated into the diets of farm animals, fish, and pets to promote health benefits. Despite this, the application and potential of plant extracts in canine and feline nutrition have not been comprehensively explored. Many aspects of the mechanisms underlying the action of these plant metabolites remain to be analyzed and elucidated. Furthermore, leveraging natural plant extracts for the treatment of clinical conditions in dogs and cats is a crucial component of clinical nutrition. Mexican Coccoloba uvifera fruit contains polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, while in the leaves, lupeol, α- and β-amyrin have been previously identified by HPLC. However, the low resolution by HPLC of pentacyclic triterpenes (PTs) is a limitation. Moreover, the volatile profile of C. uvifera fruit is still unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to identify PTs in C. uvifera leaf and fruit extracts by CG-MS analysis and to determine the volatile profile of C. uvifera pulp by headspace solid-phase microextraction. The results showed trimethylsilylated compounds of standards lupeol, α- and β-amyrin, indicating that the silylation reaction was suitable. These trimethylsilylated compounds were identified in leaf and fruit extracts. The fruit volatile profile revealed the presence of 278 esters, 20 terpenes, 9 aldehydes, 5 alcohols, and 4 ketones. The fruit showed a high content of esters and terpenes. Due to their flavour properties, esters are essential for the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutics industries. Moreover, terpenes in the fruit, such as menthone, β-elemene, junipene, and β-caryophyllene have the potential as anticancer and phytopathogen agents. The results indicated that GC-MS is an alternative to HPLC approaches for identifying PTs. Besides, identifying volatile compounds in the fruit will increase the value of this plant and expand its application. Identifying PTs and volatile compounds in Mexican C. uvifera leads to a better understanding of the potential benefits of this plant. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a chronic and progressive systemic condition that characterizes irreversible alterations in the kidneys' function and structure over an extended period, spanning months to years. CKD is the one of the major causes of mortality worldwide. However, very limited treatment options are available in the market for management of the CKD. Diabetes and hypertension are the key risk factors for the progression of CKD. It is majorly characterised by glomerulosclerosis, tubular atrophy, and interstitial fibrosis. Plants are considered safe and effective in treating various chronic conditions. A diverse group of phytoconstituents, including polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and terpenes, have found significant benefits in managing chronic ailments. Terpenes constitute a diverse group of plant compounds with various therapeutic benefits. Evidence-based pharmacological studies underscore the crucial role played by terpenes in preventing and managing CKD. These substances demonstrate the capacity to hinder detrimental pathways, such as oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrosis, thereby demonstrating benefit in renal dysfunction. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the roles and positive attributes of commonly occurring terpenes in managing the causes and risk factors of CKD and the associated conditions. In exploring the male–female differentiation and differences in the seedling stage of the F1 generation of ginkgo hybrids, an early selection test for the cultivation and research of leafy or medicinal ginkgo industry was conducted, which may provide a basis for boosting the precision of the ginkgo industry. The hybrid F1 generation obtained from the cross-mating was used as material for the determination of growth and development, as well as of the physiology and biochemistry of the monocots, and the male and female differential genes were obtained based on the data of SNPs obtained from the GBS sequencing of the hybrid progeny. In the seedling stage of ginkgo hybrid offspring, male plants had a significantly higher nutrient growth capacity than female plants, while the total flavonoid and terpene lactone contents in female plants were higher than those of the male plants. This result can provide a corresponding theoretical basis for the use of ginkgo germplasm resources, which can make full use of the male and female differences in the seedling stage and maximize the benefits of early sex identification. In this study, we analyzed the chemical composition of the leaf-derived essential oil of Liquidambar formosana (Altingiaceae) using GC-MS; we also investigated the VOCs released from L. formosana leaves and the leaf essential oil at different temperatures by means of headspace gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS). Regarding the VOCs of the leaves, monoterpenes predominated the VOCs at both temperatures, mainly comprising sabinene, followed by γ-terpinene, α-terpinene, and α-pinene. The intensity of the leaf VOCs at 50 °C was nearly three times higher than that at 25 °C; the emission of monoterpenes significantly increases at higher environmental temperatures. The VOC emissions of oxygenated monoterpenes from the leaf essential oil increased at higher temperatures (50 °C), especially those of terpinen-4-ol. Our results reveal that HS-GC-MS can be used to conveniently and directly analyze the VOCs emitted from L. formosana leaves and their essential oils and to evaluate the influence of temperature on the composition of the VOCs of specimens. These VOC studies will assist in the sustainable development and utilization of L. formosana trees for forest therapy, as well as the use of their leaf essential oil for aromatherapy. Background: Neolamarckia cadamba (Rubiaceae) is a well-recognized medicinal plant with recorded therapeutical attributes. However, a thorough assessment of active compounds in its fruits is lacking, limiting their use and valorization in pharmacological industries. Methods: Thus, this study investigated variations in the fruits' secondary metabolite (SM) profiles, as well as antioxidant activities in aqueous (WA) and ethanol (ET) extracts. Results: Liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry identified 541 SMs, of which 14 and 1 (di-O-glucosylquinic acid) were specifically detected in ET and WA, respectively. Phenolic acids (36.97%), flavonoids (28.10%), terpenoids (12.20%), and alkaloids (9.98%) were the dominant SMs. The SM profiles of the fruits in WA and ET were quite different. We revealed 198 differentially extracted (DE) metabolites between WA and ET, including 62 flavonoids, 57 phenolic acids, 45 terpenoids, 14 alkaloids, etc. Most DE flavones (36 out of 40), terpenoids (45 out of 45), and alkaloids (12 out of 14) had higher content in ET. Catechin and its derivatives, procyanidins, and tannins had higher content in WA. ABTS and DPPH assays showed that the antioxidant activity of ET was significantly higher than that of WA. Chrysanthemum morifolium is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family that is used as a medicine and food owing to its superior pharmacological properties. Irrespective of its application, C. morifolium must be dried before use. Shade drying (YG) and heat drying (HG) are the two drying methods used in most origins. Given the abundance of flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids, the primary medicinal active constituents of C. morifolium, it is important to determine whether the composition and content of these compounds are altered during the drying processes. To test this, the changes in the chemical composition of C. morifolium flowers after YG and HG using full-spectrum, non-targeted LC/GC–MS−based metabolomics and, subsequently, the three indicator components of C. morifolium—chlorogenic acid, 3,5−dicaffeoylquinic acid, and luteolin−7−O−glucoside—were accurately quantified by HPLC. The results of the non-targeted metabolomics analysis revealed that YG- and HG-processed C. morifolium differed significantly with respect to chemical contents, especially flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids. The levels of the indicator components and their precursors also differed significantly between the YG and HG treatments. The contents of most of the flavonoids and key phenolic acids, terpenoids, and carbohydrates were higher with YG than with HG pre-treatment. These results revealed the changes in the chemical composition of C. morifolium during the YG and HG processes, thus providing a reference for the further optimization of the production and processing of chrysanthemums. Background: The Alangium Lam. belongs to the Alangiaceae family and contains over 30 species. Researchers have identified over 300 phytochemicals from these species, including alkaloids, glycosides, terpenes, lignans, flavonoids, and steroids. However, there is no review of the antitumor properties of the Alangium genus, and the subsequent information on the mechanism of its antitumor action is not comprehensive enough. Methods: This article reviews previous studies on the Alangium obtained from various sources, including the CNKI, PubMed, Google Scholar, Connected Paper, and the chemical abstracts service (CAS). Results: Among these compounds, 85 have been found to possess anti-tumor properties, mainly belongs to alkaloids, glycosides, and terpenes. This will provide new insights and a broader perspective for future research on the effects of anti-tumor chemicals and their mechanisms of action within this plant genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective/Background: Phlomis longifolia Boiss. & C.I. Blanche. is one of the significant medicinal plants extensively utilized in folk medicine in Syria. So, this study aimed to identify the chemical components with potential pharmacological properties of essential oils extracted from the aerial parts of the Syrian P. longifolia plant for the first time. Methods: The aerial parts of the plant were collected from a mountainous area in Latakia Province, Syria. Subsequently, the essential oils were obtained using hydrodistillation with a yield of (0.14% for flowers, 0.075% for calyxes, and 0.19% for leaves) using a Clevenger-type apparatus and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: A total of 63, 61, and 48 compounds, which represent (98.0%, 97.1%, and 97.9%) of the total oils, were identified for flowers, calyxes, and leaves, respectively. The major compounds identified in the flower's essential oil were: widdrol (29.8%), β-caryophyllene (9.7%), and (E)-nerolidyl acetate (5.8%). While in the calyx's essential oil were: (E)-nerolidyl acetate (8.6%), α-humulene (8.1%), and β-caryophyllene (7.7%). As for the leave's essential oil were: (E)-nerolidyl acetate (11.4%), β-caryophyllene (9.5%), α-amorphene (8.8%), caryophyllene oxide (6.7%), α-humulene (5.3%), and 3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran-4-one (5.2%). Additionally, the majority of the identified compounds have various biological activities, according to the published literature. Conclusion: In this work, the chemical composition of essential oils extracted from the aerial parts of P. longifolia was determined for the first time by GC-MS. Terpenes were the dominant chemical content of essential oils (83.3% for flowers, 72.7% for calyxes, and 80.9 for leaves), and sesquiterpenes had the highest concentration among them (77.3% for flowers, 65.7% for calyxes, and 77.1% for leaves). Objective/Background: Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich., a plant of the Cupressaceae family, is known for its leaves and cones rich in essential oils, which are traditionally used in folk medicine. This study employed hydrodistillation to extract essential oils from three parts of T. distichum, namely its leaves, twigs, and cones, and evaluated the yield and composition of these oils as well as their anti-mildew property on paper. Methods: The chemical compositions of the essential oils from the three parts were analyzed using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The anti-mildew properties were assessed on paper against seven mold fungi, namely Aspergillus clavatus, A. niger, Chaetomium globosum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Myrothecium verrucaria, Penicillium citrinum, and Trichoderma viride, following standards such as TAPPI T487 cm-93 and CNS 2690. Furthermore, the essential oil demonstrating the strongest anti-mildew properties was selected from the oils extracted from three different parts, underwent column chromatography for isolation, and the main active compounds were identified. Results: Among the three parts, cones had the highest essential oil yield (0.53 ± 0.03 mL/100 g), followed by leaves (0.46 ± 0.02 mL/100 g) and twigs (0.06 ± 0.01 mL/100 g). The main components were limonene (39.8%) and α-pinene (37.1%) in leaves; limonene (16.8%), α-pinene (15.8%), and ferruginol (11.0%) in twigs; and ferruginol (43.2%) and caryophyllene oxide (12.5%) in cones. The cone oils exhibited the most effective anti-mildew properties on paper. Furthermore, the cone oils were fractionated into six fractions (CO1–CO6), with the CO4 fraction exhibiting the best activity. CO4's main components were ferruginol, caryophyllene oxide, and β-caryophyllene. Ferruginol showed the best anti-mildew performance, with 100% inhibition at 200 μg/cm² for all strains. Conclusion: The study results indicated that essential oils from the cones of T. distichum and ferruginol exhibit promising anti-mildew effects on paper. The use of household bleach cleaning products results in emissions of highly oxidative gaseous species, such as hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and chlorine (Cl2). These species readily react with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as limonene, one of the most abundant compounds found in indoor enviroments. In this study, reactions of HOCl/Cl2 with limonene in the gas phase and on indoor relevant surfaces were investigated. Using an environmental Teflon chamber, we show that silica (SiO2), a proxy for window glass, and rutile (TiO2), a component of paint and self-cleaning surfaces, act as a reservoir for adsorption of gas-phase products formed between HOCl/Cl2 and limonene. Furthermore, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) shows that the gas-phase reaction products of HOCl/Cl2 and limonene readily adsorb on both SiO2 and TiO2. Surface-mediated reactions can also occur, leading to the formation of new chlorine- and oxygen-containing products. Transmission Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of adsorption and desorption of bleach and terpene oxidation products indicates that these chlorine- and oxygen-containing products strongly adsorb on both SiO2 and TiO2 surfaces for days, providing potential sources of human exposure and sinks for additional heterogeneous reactions.

Abstract Background Metabolic engineering enables the sustainable and cost-efficient production of complex chemicals. Efficient production of terpenes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae can be achieved by recruiting an intermediate of the mevalonate pathway. The present study aimed to evaluate the engineering strategies of S. cerevisiae for the production of taxadiene, a precursor of taxol, an antineoplastic drug. Result SCIGS22a, a previously engineered strain with modifications in the mevalonate pathway (MVA), was used as a background strain. This strain was engineered to enable a high flux towards farnesyl diphosphate (FPP) and the availability of NADPH. The strain MVA was generated from SCIGS22a by overexpressing all mevalonate pathway genes. Combining the background strains with 16 different episomal plasmids, which included the combination of 4 genes: tHMGR (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase), ERG20 (farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase), GGPPS (geranyl diphosphate synthase) and TS (taxadiene synthase) resulted in the highest taxadiene production in S. cerevisiae of 528 mg/L. Conclusion Our study highlights the critical role of pathway balance in metabolic engineering, mainly when dealing with toxic molecules like taxadiene. We achieved significant improvements in taxadiene production by employing a combinatorial approach and focusing on balancing the downstream and upstream pathways. These findings emphasize the importance of minor gene expression modification levels to achieve a well-balanced pathway, ultimately leading to enhanced taxadiene accumulation.

Comparison of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) found in devastating plant pathogens and biocontrol fungi revealed an uncharacterized and conserved polyketide BGC. Genome mining identified the associated metabolite to be treconorin, which has a terpene-like, trans-fused 5,7-bicyclic core that is proposed to derive from a (4 + 3) cycloaddition. The core is esterified with d-glucose, which derives from the glycosidic cleavage of a trehalose ester precursor. This glycomodification strategy is different from the commonly observed glycosylation of natural products.

The molecular mechanisms of coevolution between plants and insects remain elusive. GABA receptors are targets of many neurotoxic terpenoids, which represent the most diverse array of natural products known. Over deep evolutionary time, as plant terpene synthases diversified in plants, so did plant terpenoid defence repertoires. Here we show that herbivorous insects and their predators evolved convergent amino acid changing substitutions in duplicated copies of the Resistance to dieldrin (Rdl) gene that encodes the GABA receptor, and that the evolution of duplicated Rdl and terpenoid-resistant GABA receptors is associated with the diversification of moths and butterflies. These same substitutions also evolved in pests exposed to synthetic insecticides that target the GABA receptor. We used in vivo genome editing in Drosophila melanogaster to evaluate the fitness effects of each putative resistance mutation and found that pleiotropy both facilitates and constrains the evolution of GABA receptor resistance. The same genetic changes that confer resistance to terpenoids across 300 Myr of insect evolution have re-evolved in response to synthetic analogues over one human lifespan.

Ionic liquids, nonvolatile salts featuring a melting point below 100 °C, are one of the few alternative solvents for environmentally friendly processes. However, like most molecular solvents, they are usually prepared by means of building blocks derived from fossil oil. Fortunately, an increasing number of ionic liquids are synthesized starting from renewable natural products such as sugars and amino acids. The preliminary study revealed that the ethyl acetate eluate of Youngia japonica (YJ-E) could inhibit the expression of key proteins of p-p65, p-IκBα, p-IKKα/β, and p-AKT in LPS stimulated BV2 cell. Further phytochemical study led to the isolation of eight compounds from YJ-E, including one new sesquiterpene lactone. Their structures were elucidated by several spectroscopic data, and comparing the NMR data of known compound. In addition, all of the isolates were evaluated for the anti-inflammatory effect. Background: The simplest form of carbohydrate that the human body can utilize efficiently to fuel various functions in our body is glucose. The food that is consumed by us in any form is acted upon by pancreatic juices, bile, and several other digestive enzymes and is converted into its simplest form, which is absorbed by the small intestine and is diffused into the circulatory system; from there, it is transported to other organs via GLUT-2 and GLUT-4 transporters. This process is very important, and so are the hormones involved in it. One such major hormone responsible for glucose homeostasis in the body is insulin. Its malfunction or that of either of its signaling components leads to a metabolic disorder termed "diabetes." Hyperglycemia is a grave condition associated with this complex disease and is of global concern. The impact of this disease can be life threatening if adequate precaution, medication, and therapy are overlooked. A plethora of synthetic drugs are available in the market, and the main goals of these antidiabetic medicines are to improve insulin sensitivity and/or production as well as to lower blood glucose levels. In all cases, frequent use of antidiabetic medication causes several after-effects. Results: Numerous studies in this field demonstrate that antidiabetic phytomolecules are highly effective against diabetes patients and are almost completely without side effects. Almost all classes of phytomolecules have been thoroughly evaluated to develop the noble plant-based drug. Conclusion: The current review discusses diabetes, its classification and management, worldwide occurrence, and the most crucial class of antidiabetic phytomolecules, for example, alkaloids, and terpenenoids as well as the parent molecule responsible for the bioactivity, subclasses, their mechanisms of action, plant sources and part, their superiority over synthetic drug, and new advances in this area. Main conclusion: The metabolomic of the Italian endemic species Stachys italica was investigated and potential positive metabolites for human’s health were detected, quantified and discussed in relation to its synecology. Stachys italica is a species endemic to central-southern Italy, traditionally used for human consumption. The present research reports the results of a phytosociological study of this species in two southern regions of Italy (Apulia and Calabria). The collected plant material was used to make two types of extracts: hot water infusion to evaluate the use of this plant as tea and hydroalcoholic extraction to evaluate the use of it in herbal liqueur preparation. The extracts obtained by the hot water infusion had a values of total polyphenols and antioxidant capacity similar to values found in black tea. The analysis of non-volatiles compounds revealed the presence of biologically active substances like lavandulifolioside, verbascoside, and methoxyflavones. The analysis of volatiles fraction of metabolites demonstrated fifty-three volatiles compounds in the plant aerial part, 19 of which belonging to monoterpenoids, and 17 to the class of sesquiterpenoids. Among them, α-pinene, β-pinene, cis-ocimene, limonene and t-caryophyllene, were the most abundant compounds. The results were compared with already published results and referred to other similar species (such as Sideritis syriaca) which represent herbal mixtures usually collected and used as “mountain tea” in the Balkans and Eastern European countries. Pink pepper essential oil was microencapsulated with chickpea protein (CP) and chickpea protein/pectin (CP-HMP) by spray drying. The reconstitution and storage properties of the powders were evaluated after drying. The impact of microencapsulation in the volatiles release, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of oil was evaluated during 135 days of storage. CP resulted in more soluble powders (93.52%), CP/HMP resulted in denser powders (0.39 g/mL) while wall material did not influence the wettability. Free pink pepper essential oil (FEO) showed a slight loss of the predominant terpenes (α-pinene, β-pinene, β-mircene, δ-3-carene and D-limonene) after encapsulation. In general, all samples showed an increase in the volatiles release during storage. The evaluation of mass loss showed that FEO had a high release of volatiles, followed by CP and CP-HMP. The antioxidant activity of the FEO decreased (10.8 μg Trolox/mg of oil) after 135 days of storage, whereas the antioxidant activity of CP (14.9) and CP-HMP (14) increased. Both microcapsules presented antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus during storage. CP microcapsules had a strong inhibitory effect against the strains tested, and this advantage was even more evident in long-term storage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Skin cancer is a widespread type of cancer representing 30% of all cancer types worldwide. Resveratrol (RSV) is an anticancer drug used for skin cancer treatment. Several limitations of RSV such as poor aqueous solubility, first-pass metabolism, and instability limit their topical use. The study aimed to develop and optimize RSV-loaded invasomes for topical administration as well as assess their efficacy in vivo. The optimized RSV-loaded invasomes showed small particle size (208.7 ± 74 nm), PDI (0.3 ± 0.03), high % entrapment efficiency (77.7 ± 6%), and negative zeta potential (−70.4 ± 10.9 mV). They showed an initial burst effect followed by controlled drug release for 24 h. RSV-loaded invasomal gel revealed the highest skin deposition percentage (65%) in ex vivo rat skin, the highest potency (low IC50 of 6.34 μg/mL), and the highest cellular uptake when tested on squamous cancerous cells (SCCs) when compared to other formulations. The antitumor effect of topical RSV-loaded invasomes was also evaluated in vivo in Ehrlich-induced mice models. The results revealed that RSV-loaded invasomal gel exhibited the smallest tumor volume with no signs of organ toxicity indicating its safety in skin cancer treatment. Upregulation of BAX and Caspase-3 gene levels and downregulation of NF-kB and BCL2 protein levels were demonstrated using RT-PCR and ELISA tests, respectively. Interestingly, the present study is the first to develop RSV-loaded invasomal gel for topical skin cancer treatment. According to our results, invasomes are considered promising lipid-based nanosystems for topical RSV delivery having high skin penetration ability and anticancer effect in the treatment of skin carcinoma. Our study explores the impact of sudden gap formation on the bark volatile and internal chemical profiles of Norway spruce trees during the initial dry year of research plot 2018 following gap formation. We investigated the annual variation in two main physiological traits of Norway spruce trees at the forest edge (FE) and in the forest interior (FI): bark monoterpene (MT) emission spectra and internal phloem MT composition. Given that gap formation increases the solar radiation dose and temperature for trees at the forest edge, we hypothesized that the concentrations of airborne terpenes released from the tree bark and internal phloem terpenes will increase as a consequence of induced tree defenses. Our findings demonstrate significant increases in both airborne terpene concentrations and internal terpene composition in trees at the forest edge compared to the control trees in the forest interior. This study provides novel insights into the annual dynamics of bark monoterpenes following forest edge establishment and underscores the physiological changes experienced by trees in response to the gap formation.

Recent global market disruptions, including the COVID-19 crisis, inflation, and oil crises, have highlighted the need for industries to reduce dependence on petrochemicals. However, the coating industry remains reliant on petrochemicals due to a lack of knowledge about local and sustainable alternatives. This study explored the potential of wood extractives as precursors for producing high-quality wood coatings. Terpenes were modified through acrylation, and bio-based latexes were synthesized from these modified terpenes. Analysis showed that all tested latexes had conversion levels above 88.5%. The bio-based films were characterized, and their transparency, measured by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, exceeded 80%. The good incorporation of bio-based monomers in the latex films was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Comparative analysis between bio-based and conventional latexes showed equivalent results in particle size, molecular weight, glass transition temperature, and minimum film formation temperature. However, bio-based films exhibited lower hardness. The study suggests that using monomers derived from wood extractives offers a viable alternative to petrochemicals, utilizing abundant forest residues. This approach could address raw material shortages and help make the coatings industry more sustainable by reducing its reliance on petrochemicals.

Introduction: Cannabis sativa L. inflorescences are widely used in the medicinal field as treatments for a variety of symptoms and illnesses due to their unique phytochemicals such as cannabinoids and terpenes. Common postharvest procedures for cannabis inflorescence include trimming, followed by drying, curing, and subsequent storage. The postharvest trimming step, particularly its timing (pre- or post-drying) and the extent of trimming, is not optimally refined in terms of its impact on the cannabinoid and terpene content. In this study, our objective was to identify the optimal trimming conditions for a commercially available medicinal cannabis hybrid chemovar, with the goal of maximizing its cannabinoid and terpene content. Methods: To achieve this, we investigated the effects of pre- versus post-drying trimming and evaluated the impact of mild versus aggressive trimming prior to drying on the cannabinoid and terpene profiles using liquid and gas chromatography. Results: Our results indicated that pre-drying mild trimming yielded the highest cannabinoid concentration, possibly due to optimal balance between stress signals and precursor influx from the sugar leaves to the inflorescence. On the other, post-drying trimming yielded the highest terpene content. Conclusion: Identifying the optimal trimming conditions that maximize both cannabinoid and terpene levels in cannabis is challenging. Therefore, growers face a decision in their trimming practices: to prioritize either enhanced cannabinoid content or increased aromatic terpene concentrations, as optimizing for both simultaneously appears to be difficult.

Abstract Background Terpenes are important components of plant aromas, and terpene synthases (TPSs) are the key enzymes driving terpene diversification. In this study, we characterized the volatile terpenes in five different Chrysanthemum nankingense tissues. In addition, genome-wide identification and expression analysis of TPS genes was conducted utilizing an improved chromosome-scale genome assembly and tissue-specific transcriptomes. The biochemical functions of three representative TPSs were also investigated. Results We identified tissue-specific volatile organic compound (VOC) and volatile terpene profiles. The improved Chrysanthemum nankingense genome assembly was high-quality, including a larger assembled size (3.26 Gb) and a better contig N50 length (3.18 Mb) compared to the old version. A total of 140 CnTPS genes were identified, with the majority representing the TPS-a and TPS-b subfamilies. The chromosomal distribution of these TPS genes was uneven, and 26 genes were included in biosynthetic gene clusters. Closely-related Chrysanthemum taxa were also found to contain diverse TPS genes, and the expression profiles of most CnTPSs were tissue-specific. The three investigated CnTPS enzymes exhibited versatile activities, suggesting multifunctionality. Conclusions We systematically characterized the structure and diversity of TPS genes across the Chrysanthemum nankingense genome, as well as the potential biochemical functions of representative genes. Our results provide a basis for future studies of terpene biosynthesis in chrysanthemums, as well as for the breeding of improved chrysanthemum varieties.

The transition to a sustainable future requires the use of waste‐free technologies for production. Potentially, additive technologies can be a promising approach for accessing circular economy due to the precise amount of feeding materials and the absence of molds. However, the initial feeding materials for additive approaches are often based on non–renewable hydrocarbon sources. This work focused on the use of polymers derived from terpene alcohols to develop a filament suitable for 3D printing. Initially, the vinylation of menthol using calcium carbide was optimized and scaled up, then a series of terpenyl–based vinyl ethers were obtained under optimal conditions. The cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers was also scaled up and resulted in 99 % yield of the polymers, which was subsequently subjected to hot extrusion. The initial terpenol was used as an additive to increase polymer flexibility. The addition of menthol (30 wt %) to polyvinyl menthol led to the suitable filament. Using the filament, a series of objects were 3D printed at 125 °C. The material demonstrated good sinterability and adhesion to glass and shrinkage comparable to that of commercial 3D printing filaments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of copaiba oleoresin (CO) as a substitute for sodium lasalocid on the carcass characteristics and meat quality of feedlot lambs fed a high-concentrate diet. Twenty-four Pantaneiro lambs, aged 152 days and weighing an initial body weight of 21.2 ± 3.9 kg, were distributed in a randomised block design with three treatments and eight replications. The treatments correspond to the additive supplements: LAS (22.5 mg of sodium lasalocid/kg of diet); CO-0.5 (0.5 mL of CO/animal/day); CO-1.0 (1.0 mL of CO/animal/day). The doses of CO were administered to the animals orally with the aid of a graduated syringe. Lambs supplemented with LAS had higher hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, cold carcass yield, and degree of fattening compared to CO-0.5, while CO-1.0 did not differ from LAS. It can be concluded that daily ingestion of CO up to 1.0 mL/lamb did not negatively affect carcass characteristics when compared to LAS supplementation. However, lower ingestion (0.5 mL/day) can reduce the carcass weight and carcass yield. Although CO supplementation minimally affected the meat quality and FA profiles, both doses reduced crude protein content in meat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
