Abstract

The author takes the topic of "borders" in an anthropological way. That is to say as the question of identity and communication as a basic antagonism in human culture including the permanent challenge of transgressing borders given - as well individual as collective ones. The example of the life and work of Comenius shows the possibility of successfully mastering those challenges in a life characterised through life long experience of migration, changes of languages, countries, confrontations of cultures, religions and philosophies. Comenius shows a personal and a philosophical and theological open-mindedness which helps to overcome timid self-restrictions and hostile rejection of "the strange" and the "stranger" - in favour of open communication based on deeply felt understanding of what Christianity may offer to the world - including the world of our days in its actual turmoil. Abstract

This paper gives a review over common tendencies of the reformations initiated by Petrus Valdes, Franciscus of Assisi, John Wyclif influencing Jan Hus and further the German, Swiss and French (not so much the English) reformations of 16th century. Comenius confessing himself a hereditarian of Jan Hus acknowledged him as the One who realized as well the reform of the doctrine as the reform of Christian lifestyle. This notwithstanding he made a difference to Jan Hus (who was a follower of Wyclif’s and St. Augustine’s doctrine of predestination) by which Comenius took stand nearer to Martin Luther than to Jean Calvin. And with his central hope for „Panegersia“ and „Panorthosia“ he took position near to Origines’ hope for „Apokatastasis panton“. Definitely we may say that Comenius transformed the whole of as well traditional as of critical thinking in the history of Christian theologies by his early (17th century!) vision of the ecumenical conciliary movement („consultatio catholica“) which we try to foster in the beginnings of the Third Christian Millennium. Abstract

Heart failure (HF) is a common and potentially deadly condition, which frequently develops as a consequence of various diseases of the heart. The incidence of heart failure continuously increases in aging societies illustrating the need for new therapeutic approaches. We recently discovered that continuous activation of oncostatin M (OSM), a cytokine of the interleukin-6 family that induces dedifferentiation of cardiomyocytes, promotes progression of heart failure in dilative cardiomyopathy. To evaluate whether inhibition of OSM signaling represents a meaningful therapeutic approach to prevent heart failure we attenuated OSM-receptor (Oβ) signaling in a mouse model of inflammatory dilative cardiomyopathy. We found that administration of an antibody directed against the extracellular domain of Oβ or genetic inactivation of a single allele of the Oβ gene reduced cardiomyocyte remodeling and dedifferentiation resulting in improved cardiac performance and increased survival. We conclude that pharmacological attenuation of long-lasting Oβ signaling is a promising strategy to treat different types and stages of HF that go along with infiltration by OSM-releasing inflammatory cells.
