An original approach to tune the ferromagnetic resonance frequency of a soft magnetic Ni80Fe20 (Permalloy = Py) film with in-plane magnetic anisotropy (IMA) based on the controlled coupling to a hard magnetic NdCox film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) through a nonmagnetic Al spacer is studied. Using the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE), alternating gradient magnetometry (AGM), and vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR) spectroscopy, the influence of both the Co concentration and the Al spacer thickness on the static and dynamic magnetic properties of the coupled IMA/PMA system is investigated. Compared to a single Py film, two striking effects of the coupling between IMA and PMA layers can be observed in their FMR spectra. First, there is a significant increase in the zero-field resonance frequency from 2.0 GHz up to 6.4 GHz, and second, an additional frequency hysteresis occurs at low magnetic fields applied along the hard axis. The maximum frequency difference between the frequency branches for increasing and decreasing magnetic fields is as high as 1 GHz, corresponding to a tunability of about 20% at external fields of typically less than ±70 mT. The origin of the observed features in the FMR spectra is discussed by means of magnetization reversal curves.

Block copolymers offer the fabrication of mesoporous thin films with distinct nanoscale structural features. In this contribution, we present the use of acetic acid (CH3COOH) as a low‐molecular‐weight guest molecule to tune the supramolecular assembly of poly[styrene‐block‐(4‐vinylpyridine)] (PS‐b‐P4VP), offering a versatile and straightforward method to obtain tailored nanostructured films with controlled topography and pore size. Spin‐coating toluene solutions of PS‐b‐P4VP, with a variable amount of CH3COOH, leads to micellar thin films, where the micelles contain the carboxylic acid as a guest molecule. The size can be conveniently modified in these films (from 48 to 75 nm) by varying the amount of organic acid in the starting solutions. Subsequent surface reconstruction of micellar films using ethanol leads to ring‐shaped copolymer nanoporous films with modulated diameter. Controlling the micelle reconstruction process, cylindrical porous films are also obtained. Interestingly, changing the type of aliphatic carboxylic acid leads to a modification of the observed film morphology from micelles to out‐of‐plane P4VP cylinders (or lamellae) in a PS matrix.

The presence of myth and folklore in Young Adult fantasy has increased in the last decades, boosting the genre’s popularity among young readers. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the way in which, specifically Welsh/Celtic mythology and folklore, are included in fictional worlds of fantasy as exemplified in Maggie Stiefvater’s four-book saga The Raven Cycle. Although the narrative is framed in a modern-day American setting, several allusions to Welsh/Celtic mythology, folklore, and historical figures can be found throughout the story, also in relation with more worldwide-spread beliefs as well as myths., La presencia de mitos y folclore en la ficción juvenil ha ido incrementando a lo largo de las últimas décadas, haciendo que dicho género gane popularidad entre sus lectores. El objetivo de este Trabajo de Fin de Máster es analizar la inclusión de, en particular, la mitología y folclore celta/gaélico en mundos fantásticos, más concretamente en el creado por Maggie Stiefvater en la saga The Raven Cycle, compuesta por cuatro libros. Six of Crows (2015) by Leigh Bardugo is one of the most remarkable samples of current young adult fantasy literature in English, as well as a particularly complex work to translate due to its involved fictional universe and the lexical choices and creations that underpin the latter. The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the process of translation performed by Miguel Trujillo Fernández in the Spanish edition of Six of Crows published in 2016. More specifically, I will establish the several and specific techniques employed by the translator in dealing with such words as respectively contribute to the development of the novel’s fictional universe and are instrumental in terms of character building. Results demonstrate that the complexity of both, universes and characters, in fantasy fiction has an important bearing on the decisions made by the translator in order to adapt the text to the needs and expectations of the intended readership., Six of Crows, novela escrita por Leigh Bardugo en 2015, es una de las obras más destacadas en el ámbito actual de la literatura fantástica juvenil en lengua inglesa, así como un relato especialmente complejo desde el punto de vista de la traducción, dada la densidad de su universo narrativo. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es analizar la traducción española de esta obra (Seis de cuervos) publicada en 2016 y realizada por Miguel Trujillo Fernández. En concreto, nos centraremos en determinar si el traductor emplea y discrimina entre diversas técnicas de traducción a la hora de abordar aquellas palabras que participen de forma especial en el desarrollo del universo fantástico que construye el relato, frente a aquellas que se emplean para configurar a los personajes. The postmodern dictum that all texts are in fact inter-texts inevitably developing from preexisting references seems to be particularly apt to describe the modus operandi of contemporary popular writers who have built entire fictional worlds on previous works of literature. Such is the case of Judith Lewis, better known by her pen name Cassandra Clare. A close look at the novels she has published so far will unveil a complex network of intertextual connections that range from textual references to plot and character parallelisms. Her Shadowhunter Chronicles comprise a world in which Milton’s demons are destroyed by Dickensian characters and Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “Annabel Lee” tells a tragic but real love story that ultimately leads to a series of murders and necromancy. The present graduation project traces this meshwork of allusions and intertextual ties in Clare’s best-selling young adult fiction., El aforismo postmodernista que estableció que todos los textos son en realidad intertextos, desarrollados a partir de referencias a textos ya existentes, parece perfectamente adecuado para describir el modus operandi de muchos escritores contemporáneos que construyen mundos ficticios basados en obras previas de literatura. This paper aims at studying how translators tend to behave practically under the multiple constraints involved in the translation of song lyrics for dubbing, through the analysis of the Spanish translations made both in Latin America and in Spain of the soundtrack to the 1991 Disney animated feature film, Beauty and the Beast. Using a descriptive methodology, the selected tracks have been examined considering the five criteria set in Peter Low’s Pentathlon Principle for song lyrics translation (i.e. rhythm, rhyme, naturalness, singability and sense), along with the restrictions derived from the search for synchrony with the visual channel. Our conclusions suggest that the decisions made by translators in rendering song lyrics are normally subjected to the latters’ skopos., El objetivo de este artículo es estudiar la forma en que los traductores tienden a actuar en la práctica ante las numerosas restricciones presentes en la traducción de canciones para el doblaje, a través del análisis de las traducciones hechas al castellano, tanto en Latinoamérica como en España, de la banda sonora de La Bella y la Bestia (1991). Las canciones seleccionadas han sido analizadas mediante una metodología descriptiva, teniendo en cuenta los cinco criterios recogidos por Peter Low en su “Pentathlon Principle” (Principio del pentatlón) para traducir canciones (a saber, ritmo, rima, naturalidad, cantabilidad y sentido), además de las restricciones que se derivan de la búsqueda de sincronización con el canal visual. La finalidad de este trabajo es, por un lado, entender el funcionamiento de las principales técnicas de microscopía magnética de rayos X, así como sus aplicaciones en el estudio de propiedades magnéticas de láminas delgadas. En particular, nos centraremos en la técnica conocida como microscopía de transmisión de rayos X (TXM). Por otro lado, el trabajo presenta una componente experimental. A partir de una serie de muestras que obtendremos en el laboratorio, llevaremos a cabo un análisis de las mismas con las técnicalisiss previamente explicadas. Se incluyen también una serie de experimentos con dichas muestras llevados a cabo en el sincrotrón ALBA de Barcelona. El uso de las propiedades magnéticas de ciertos materiales es un campo en expansión. Además de su conocido uso en almacenamiento de datos, resulta cada vez más imprescindible en el análisis biológico de células u otros ámbitos científicos. En este punto, es necesario el empleo de técnicas capaces de observar estructuras en la escala de los nanómetros. Como veremos, los rayos X juegan un importante papel en ese objetivo. Este trabajo pretende hacer un repaso de las técnicas más importantes e introducirnos en la búsqueda de nuevas aplicaciones mediante el uso de rayos X.

We report a surface X-ray diffraction study of the crystalline structure changes and critical behavior across the (3√2 × √2)R45° → (√2 × √2)R45° surface phase transition at 360 K for 0.5 monolayers of Sn on Cu(100). The phase transition is of the order-disorder type and is due to the disordering of the Cu atomic vacancies present in the low temperature phase. Two different atomic sites for Sn atoms, characterized by two different heights, are maintained across the surface phase transition.

The magnetization reversal of each individual layer in magnetic trilayers (permalloy/NdCo/GdCo) is investigated in detail with x-ray microscopy and micromagnetic calculations. Two sequential inversion mechanisms are identified. First, magnetic vortex-antivortex pairs move along the field direction while inverting the magnetization of magnetic stripes until they are pinned by defects. The vortex-antivortex displacements are reversible within a field interval which allows their controlled motion. Second, as the reversed magnetic field increases, cycloidal domains appear in the permalloy layer as a consequence of the dissociation of vortex-antivortex pairs due to pinning. The field range where magnetic vortices and antivortices are effectively guided by the stripe pattern is of the order of tens of mT for the NiFe layer, as estimated from the stability of cycloid domains in the sample.

The development of magnetic nanostructures for applications in spintronics requires methods capable of visualizing their magnetization. Soft X-ray magnetic imaging combined with circular magnetic dichroism allows nanostructures up to 100–300 nm in thickness to be probed with resolutions of 20–40 nm. Here a new iterative tomographic reconstruction method to extract the three-dimensional magnetization configuration from tomographic projections is presented. The vector field is reconstructed by using a modified algebraic reconstruction approach based on solving a set of linear equations in an iterative manner. The application of this method is illustrated with two examples (magnetic nano-disc and micro-square heterostructure) along with comparison of error in reconstructions, and convergence of the algorithm.

We have studied two nanomagnet systems with strong (Co/Pd multilayers) and weak (NdCo alloy films) stray magnetic fields by probing the out-of-plane magnetic states with superconducting vortices. The hybrid samples are made of array of nanomagnets embedded in superconducting Nb thin films. The vortex motion detects relevant magnetic state features, since superconducting vortices are able to discriminate between different magnetic stray field strengths and directions. The usual matching effect between the superconducting vortex lattice and the periodic pinning array can be quenched by means of disorder magnetic potentials with strong stray fields at random. Ordered stray fields retrieve the matching effect and yield asymmetry and shift in the vortex dissipation signal. Furthermore vortices can discriminate the sizes of the nanomagnet magnetic domains, detecting magnetic domain sizes as small as 70 nm. In addition, we observe that the vortex cores play the crucial role instead of the supercurrents around the vortex.

This graduation project deals with a writer who is considered to be the father of Fantastic Literature in the English language: J. R. R. Tolkien. He was the only author capable of writing a complete mythology for England. Specifically, this paper is about Tolkien’s conception of death and immortality and how these affect Middle-Earth peoples, especially as regards the fall of two of them: Men and Elves’. We have extensively drawn on many secondary sources as well as on Tolkien’s works in order to provide a general idea of these concepts in his Legendarium. After a brief review of Tolkien’s life and works, we proceed with an analysis of the dichotomy between both Men’s and Elves’ ways of dying, and, finally, explore one of the consequences of this dichotomy: the fall of both peoples., Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado trata sobre el autor que es considerado como el padre de la literatura fantástica en lengua inglesa: J. R. R. Tolkien. Tolkien ha sido el único autor que ha sido capaz de escribir una mitología completa para Inglaterra. Específicamente, este trabajo trata sobre la concepción de la muerte y la inmortalidad, y cómo afecta esta última a los pueblos de la Tierra Media, especialmente en la caída de dos de ellos: el de los Hombres y el de los Elfos. Para dar una idea general sobre estos términos en su Legendarium he leído y analizado cuidadosamente un gran número de fuentes secundarias y obras de Tolkien. Video games are one of the most relevant audiovisual products in the global market. The main reason for their success beyond their country of origin is the process of localization, that is, their translation and adaptation into a target language and culture. Due to its complexity, the processes of internationalization, review and linguistic quality control are also pillars of success for the cultural adaptation of video games. The aim of this study is to present the characteristics and peculiarities of this branch of audiovisual translation and its importance for the successful global marketing of video games like Animal Crossing: New Leaf, whose Spanish localization is analyzed as a practical example that complements our theoretical framework., Los videojuegos son uno de los productos audiovisuales más relevantes en el mercado mundial. This paper focuses on advertising as a complex and multimodal communication tool composed by different elements which, linked together, contribute not only to a particular trademark expansion, but also to achieving certain impact on the consumer’s behaviour. However, the existence of cultural elements inextricably linked to each country or community makes it necessary, in the case of global brands, to implement in some degree or another a process of cultural adaptation which allows the advertising campaign to achieve the expected effects among different target cultures. In many cases such a process critically involves some form of translation. The aim of this graduation project is first to provide an overview of the main features of advertising copy that pose a challenge for translation, and then to identify and analyse the several strategies used in order to translate and culturally adapt advertising messages in a setting that also involves a strong element of globalization., El presente trabajo se centra en la publicidad como una herramienta de comunicación compleja y multimodal compuesta por diferentes elementos que, ligados entre sí, contribuyen no sólo a la expansión de una marca, sino también a lograr cierto impacto en los consumidores. Sin embargo la existencia de elementos culturales propios de cada país o comunidad hace necesario la implementación, en el caso de marcas globales, de cierta adaptación cultural que permita que la campaña publicitaria pueda desplegar los efectos deseados en las culturas meta. En muchos casos, este proceso implica de forma crucial y de un modo u otro la actividad traductora. Transmission X-ray microscopy combined with circular magnetic dichroism allows to get insight in the 3D magnetic configuration of thinfilms or multilayers as reported in our previous works. In order to advance towards the development of 3D magnetic tomography as a tool to resolve the magnetization in relatively complex magnetic structures, we acquired images at different angles of incidence and measured their X-ray dichroic contrast. we fabricated trilayers, consisting of two permalloy (Py) films having a Cu spacer in between, to ivestigate the textures of the two Py layers. As shown in the figure, at oblique angles of incidence, white (top) and dark (bottom) triangular areas visible in image (a) that invert contrast in (c). They are due to Landau domains at the top Py layer which are superimposed to the stripe domains of the thicker Py layer at the bottom, which are most evident in image (b). This interpretation is sustained by the results of micromagnetic calculations displayed in (d) and (e).

En esta tesis se emplean, de manera intensiva, técnicas de caracterización experimental basadas en radiación sincrotrón para explorar las interacciones magnéticas de diferentes sistemas compuestos por elementos del grupo de las tierras raras y metales de transición (TR-MT), como son las aleaciones amorfas Gd-Co, Nd-Co, Dy-Co e Y-Co, conformadas como lámina continua, nanoestructuradas en forma de multicapa, o nanoestructuradas en diferentes geometrías mediante litografía por haz de electrones. Los sistemas TR-MT, de gran interés en el sector del almacenamiento y transmisión magnéticos de información, se caracterizan por poder presentar propiedades magnéticas como son una elevada anisotropía magnetocristalina perpendicular, una razonablemente intensa imanación, una alta temperatura de Curie, y la presencia de diferentes configuraciones entre los momentos magnéticos de la TR y el MT como consecuencia de la competición entre el canje y el campo cristalino aleatorio. Esta competición da lugar a configuraciones ferrimagnéticas y esperimagnéticas, dependiendo del momento orbital de la TR y de su acoplamiento (ferromagnético o antiferromagnético) con el MT. El balance energético entre la anisotropía magnética, el canje, la energía magnetostática y la energía Zeeman, cuando estas láminas delgadas son sometidas a un campo magnético externo, es estudiado a lo largo de los capítulos de esta tesis con el análisis de diferentes sistemas experimentales. Para ello, se han empleado numerosas técnicas de magnetometría y caracterización magnética convencionales, como la magnetometría por muestra vibrante (VSM), magnetometría de gradiente de campo alterno (AGM), magnetometría por dispositivo superconductor de interferencia cuántica (SQUID), efecto Kerr magneto-óptico, o la técnica de microscopía de fuerza magnética (MFM). Sin embargo, esta primera caracterización es completada con el uso de técnicas avanzadas de radiación sincrotrón, logrando obtener una mayor información acerca de los, previamente mediante efecto Kerr magneto-óptico. A continuación, y siguiendo con el enfoque de resolución de momentos localizados, se lleva a cabo un estudio del magnetismo de muestras compuestas por una lámina continua de NdCo5 y bicapas NdCo5/Permalloy. Su estudio mediante microscopía de fuerza magnética y magnetometría de gradiente alterno es completado con la información angular de los momentos magnéticos de sus dominios de banda, cuya estimación solo es posible mediante microscopía de trasmisión de rayos x. Esta capacidad se muestra por primera vez en esta tesis. En el siguiente capítulo experimental, el patrón de bandas presente en el NdCo5 es truncado mediante la fabricación de microestructuras por litografía electrónica, explorando el uso de estos sistemas como circuitos magnéticos. En este marco, se han construido, además, estructuras tridimensionales en dos niveles mediante litografía electrónica, habiendo optimizado su proceso de fabricación y empleando en su caracterización técnicas como la microscopía de fuerza alterna o la microscopia por efecto Kerr. Por último, estas estructuras 3D, destinadas a su implementación como circuitos transmisores de información magnética, han mostrado su capacidad como elementos discriminadores de la propagación de los dominios magnéticos en microhilos según el signo del campo aplicado. Finalmente, en el último capítulo, se comienza el estudio de láminas continuas y multicapas de aleaciones amorfas de DyCo5, YCo5 y GdCo5, tanto por magnetometría por muestra vibrante y SQUID como por dicroísmo magnético circular, y se discuten las diferencias comparativas en su magnetismo debidas a la distinta tierra rara empleada además de a su distinta estructuración.

Whereas a great deal of work is being devoted to magnetic singularities in two-dimensional (2D) systems (surfaces, interfaces, films) due to their possible applications, much less is known about their properties along the perpendicular direction. Here, we report on a pronounced asymmetry of the in-depth distribution of meronlike magnetic textures, which are magnetic singularities similar to skyrmions, in magnetic layers. Meron textures are observed to be distributed in two groups defined by their topology. One of them resides almost exclusively at the top surface of the film and the other at the bottom one. This observation has been brought to light with element-specific magnetic transmission soft x-ray microscopy. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that closure domains are at the origin of this asymmetry. The result might be of general interest for controlling magnetic three-dimensional (3D) architectures.

The English intellectual and artistic spheres spontaneously reacted to the Spanish Civil War, travelling to the country, writing about their experiences in Spain, and forging what was to become a popular literary phenomenon. Ever since then, works contextualized in the conflict have been approached through historicist standpoints. These have neglected to consider a central aspect of this kind of literary productions: that they normally recount personal experiences, and thus, they are acts of remembrance. This study will be looking at intertextuality in two prominent works, Homage to Catalonia and A Moment of War, in order to explore the methods employed by both authors to reconcile their intimate insights on the war with external data which, after their experiences, has been regarded as historically relevant. This thesis will suggest that both George Orwell and Laurie Lee, even if differently branded with regards to objectivity, employ similar techniques in the incorporation of impersonal information., Con el comienzo de la Guerra Civil española, los círculos artísticos y literarios ingleses reaccionaron casi de manera espontánea, viajando al país, escribiendo sobre sus experiencias y forjando lo que más tarde se convertiría en un fenómeno literario muy popular. Desde entonces, la crítica ha analizado aquellos trabajos contextualizados en el conflicto desde puntos de vista historicistas que pasan por alto uno de los aspectos centrales de este tipo de producciones literarias: en su gran mayoría, estos escritos relatan experiencias personales y son, por lo tanto, actos de memoria. Este estudio se enfoca en la intertextualidad de dos trabajos prominentes, Homenaje a Cataluña y Un instante en la guerra, con el objetivo de explorar las técnicas utilizadas por ambos autores para reconciliar sus recuerdos en la guerra con información externa que, tras sus experiencias, ha sido considerada de relevancia histórica. Ever since the unrecorded origin of translation, the latter became a powerful tool for bridging linguistic and cultural gaps and a major vehicle for the spread of knowledge and civilization. Starting from a recognition of this huge debt, the present graduation paper attempts to provide a general overview of major forces that operated in the surge of this human activity as well as to more specifically probe into some of the major recurring issues that punctuate its development both as a craft and as a theoretical discipline. Comenzando con el reconocimiento de esta gran aportación, este trabajo de fin de grado pretende mostrar una perspectiva general de las fuerzas más relevantes que influenciaron el nacimiento de esta actividad humana así como sacar a colación algunos de los aspectos más recurrentes que han jalonado su desarrollo como disciplina teórica al igual que como arte. TV animated series Phineas & Ferb stands out as a major icon in today’s animation shows for kids and pre-teens. The aim of this paper is to analyse the handling of gender roles in this show with the purpose of evaluating how balanced is the representation of the male and female figures. In order to do so, we will present a theoretical basis in which to situate our work by briefly referring to some ideas from classic feminism, particularly within the so-called “images-of-women school”. Next we will conduct an analysis of an episode sample from the series including a quantitative study of male and female characters; the gender-related occupational patterns; the gendered-images projected in crowd scenes; and the specific characteristics of the main characters. The extracted conclusions will establish the way in which the category gender is dealt with in this series., La serie de televisión Phineas & Ferb ha destacado como un gran icono de la animación actual dirigida a un público infantil y preadolescente. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el manejo de los roles de género en esta serie para evaluar cuán equilibrada es la representación de las figuras masculinas y femeninas. Para ello, presentaremos una base teórica en la que situar nuestro trabajo aludiendo brevemente algunas ideas del feminismo clásico, en especial a la cuestión de las imágenes de la mujer. A continuación acometeremos un análisis de una muestra de episodios de la serie que incluirá un estudio cuantitativo de los personajes masculinos y femeninos; los patrones ocupacionales por sexos; las imágenes de género que proyectan las escenas corales; y las características específicas de los personajes principales. Magnetic transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM) is a powerful imaging technique that can produce element specific images of magnetic domains with nanometric lateral resolution. Here we present a novel imaging method in which the angular dependence of the magnetic contrast in a series of high resolution TXM images is used to obtain quantitative descriptions of the magnetization (canting angles and sense). This has been applied first to analyze parallel stripe domains in weak perpendicular anisotropy ferromagnetic NdCo5 layers of different thickness, and in NdCo5/Permalloy bilayers. Then, our method has been used to identify complex topological defects (merons or 1/2 skyrmions) in a NdCo5 film that are only partially replicated by the Permalloy overlayer. Meron propagation in trilayers (across the thickness) and in hexagonal networks (across bifurcations) will be discussed in terms of their topological characteristics (chirality and polarity).

Angular dependence of magnetic transmission X-ray microscopy has been used as the basis of a novel imaging technique that provides quantitative descriptions of magnetic configurations with nanometric lateral resolution (canting angles relative to surface normal and sense). This method is applied to study magnetic stripe domains of ferromagnetic NdCo5 layers in which canting angles are found to decrease from 65° to 22° as Nd-Co thickness increases from 55 to 120 nm. Element specific X-ray images of a NdCo/Permalloy bilayer have allowed us to characterize independently the magnetization at each layer. Complex topological defects (merons or ½ skyrmions) have been identified within the stripe pattern of the NdCo film that are only partially replicated by the permalloy overlayer. These results open possibilities for the characterization of deeply buried magnetic topological defects, nanostructures and devices.

Topological defects are a key to understanding global properties in many different condensed matter systems with long range order. Although artificial skyrmion textures (with integer topological index Q = 1) have been imprinted in multilayers, related topological defects with fractional skymionic charge Q 0 1/2 (socalled merons) have also been described and observed. Actually meron textures bound to magnetic stripe domain pattern dislocation cores have been recently observed in weak perpendicular anisotropy NdCo/Py bilayers supporting a weak stripe domain pattern at equilibrium. In this work, we have extended our previous study by performing a detailed characterization of the 3D micromagnetic structure of meron textures in GdCo/NdCo/Py trilayers. Magnetic Transmission X-Ray microscopy (MTXM) at different sample orientations has been used to obtain the magnetic configration of the bottom/top/central layers around these merons, taking advantage os its long penetration depth to study buried layers and the possibility to obtain independently elements selective images of each layer magnetization. A detailed analysis shows that most merons appear either on top or bottom layers but not on both at the same time. This asymmetric indepth configuration follows strong selection rules based on defect topological characteristics which will be outlined and discussed in terms of micromagnetic simulations.

Meron textures are topological deffects with fractional skyrmionic charge Q = 1/2 that have been recently observed bound to magnetic stripe domain pattern dislocation cores in weak perpendicular anisotropy NdCo/Py bilayers supporting a weak stripe domain pattern at equilibrium. In this work, we go an step further by studying the in-depth transmission of merons in GdCo/NdCo(Py trilayers. Taking advantage of the element selectivity, long probing depth and magnetic sensitivity of sinchtroton based magnetic x-ray transmission microscopy, a detailed charcterization of the 3D topology of the merons formed in the system during the magnetization reversal process has been carried out. The results indicate an asymmetric confguration of merons across the thickness, as most merons appear either on top or bottom layers but not on both at the same time. This asymmetric propagation follows will be described and discussed.

Three-dimensional magnetic circuits composed of Co microwires crossed by elevated Co bridges have been patterned on Si substrate by e-beam lithography and lift-off process. The lithographic procedure includes a double resist procedure that optimizes the shape of the bridge, so that 200 nm air gaps can be routinely achieved in between the wire and bridge elements. Microwire magnetization reversal processes have been analyzed by magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy with different remanent bridge configurations. When the Co bridge is magnetized along the in-plane direction parallel to the wire axis, its stray field induces a marked pinning effect on domain wall propagation along the wire below it, even without being in contact. Changing the sign of the remanent state of the bridge, domain wall pinning can be selected to occur in either the ascending or descending branches of the wire hysteresis loop. Thus, these wire-bridge 3D circuits provide a simple system for tunable domain wall pinning controllable through the pre-recorded bridge remanent state.
