One of the main purposes of financial reporting is to provide a mechanism hy which management can report matters concerning custodianship of resources entrusted to them hy the stakeholders. One of these categories of stakeholders is the general public, which currently requires more information about the way the entity has discharged itself of its responsibility towards the ecology. However, the traditional financial accounting model is unable to account fo r ecologial assets and ecological capital. Several rather pragmatic suggestions have been made by researchers as to how to account fo r these aspects. One of these suggestions is quoted in this article, followed by a possible alternative by which ecological assets and ecological capital are introduced into the primary financial statements.

In Ihis article one of the approaches to social accounting, namely that of Ralph Estes (1976), is discussed briefly and elucidated by means of an example, and its most important advantages and disadvantages are pointed out. The theoretical concepts which have already crystallised with regard to social accounting are dealt with and contrasted with the theoretical concepts emerging from the framework of financial accounting. An attempt has been made to determine whether Estes’ approach is reconcilable with the theory of financial accounting, but this does not appear to be the case. This conclusion would probably apply to other approaches to social accounting as well. It is concluded that this shortcoming should receive attention before the theoretical framework of accounting would be able to lay claim to genera! acceptance. Furthermore, the quest for meaningful methods for the disclosure of the social responsibility of undertakings offers the accounting profession the opportunity to consider fully some of the social problems of the world as a whole in co-operation with other experts.

The necessity for the accountant to report on the social responsibility of an enterprise, and in particular its responsibility towards the environment, has come into prominence lately. Nevertheless, there is probably no other field in accounting in which the accounting profession has failed to show process for so long. Since the time of the industrial Revolution social accounting has been regarded as essential, but especially during the late sixties and the seventies various authors have endeavoured to develop techniques and models for social accounting. Some of the most important problems encountered have however been the lack of acceptable uniform definitions, the fact that the accounting profession mostly reacts pragmatically and that as a result of pressure towards rapid development, fundamental questions have not been fully considered. The accounting profession should contribute to the development and application of social accounting and social audit as part of an interdisciplinary group of experts.

Especially during the Idle sixties and the seventies various authors have tried to develop techniques and models for social accounting. The different approaches discussed in this article are those of Beams (1970), Linowes (1972), Seidler (1973) and Abt (1977). The advantages and disadvantages of each of these approaches are elucidated briefly, and examples are given of the application of some of these approaches.

Abstract Background In the field of tuberculosis (TB), Community Healthcare Workers (CHWs) have been engaged for advocacy, case detection, and patient support in a wide range of settings. Estimates predict large-scale shortfalls of healthcare workers in low- and middle-income settings by 2030 and strategies are needed to optimize the health workforce to achieve universal availability and accessibility of healthcare. In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) published guidelines on best practices for CHW engagement, and identified remaining knowledge gaps. Stop TB Partnership’s TB REACH initiative has supported interventions using CHWs to deliver TB care in over 30 countries, and utilized the same primary indicator to measure project impact at the population-level for all TB active case finding projects, which makes the results comparable across multiple settings. This study compiled 10 years of implementation data from the initiative’s grantee network to begin to address key knowledge gaps in CHW networks. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study analyzing the TB REACH data repository (n = 123) and primary survey responses (n = 50) of project implementers. We designed a survey based on WHO guidelines to understand projects’ practices on CHW recruitment, training, activities, supervision, compensation, and sustainability. We segmented projects by TB notification impact and fitted linear random-effect regression models to identify practices associated with higher changes in notifications. Results Most projects employed CHWs for advocacy alongside case finding and holding activities. Model characteristics associated with higher project impact included incorporating e-learning in training and having the prospect of CHWs continuing their responsibilities at the close of a project. Factors that trended towards being associated with higher impact were community-based training, differentiated contracts, and non-monetary incentives. Conclusion In line with WHO guidelines, our findings emphasize that successful implementation approaches provide CHWs with comprehensive training, continuous supervision, fair compensation, and are integrated within the existing primary healthcare system. However, we encountered a great degree of heterogeneity in CHW engagement models, resulting in few practices clearly associated with higher notifications.

Active case finding (ACF) is a strategy that aims to identify people with tuberculosis (TB) earlier in their disease. This outreach approach may lead to a reduction in catastrophic cost incurrence (costs exceeding 20% of annual household income), a main target of WHO’s End TB Strategy. Our study assessed the socio-economic impact of ACF by comparing patient costs in actively and passively detected people with TB. Longitudinal patient cost surveys were prospectively fielded for people with drug-sensitive pulmonary TB, with 105 detected through ACF and 107 passively detected. Data were collected in four Vietnamese cities between October 2020 and March 2022. ACF reduced pre-treatment (USD 10 vs. 101, p < 0.001) and treatment costs (USD 888 vs. 1213, p < 0.001) in TB-affected individuals. Furthermore, it reduced the occurrence of job loss (15.2% vs. 35.5%, p = 0.001) and use of coping strategies (28.6% vs. 45.7%, p = 0.004). However, catastrophic cost incurrence was high at 52.8% and did not differ between cohorts. ACF did not significantly decrease indirect costs, the largest contributor to catastrophic costs. ACF reduces costs but cannot sufficiently reduce the risk of catastrophic costs. As income loss is the largest driver of costs during TB treatment, social protection schemes need to be expanded.

Background Three‐dimensional (3D) speckle tracking echocardiography can identify subclinical diabetic cardiomyopathy without geometric assumption and loss of speckle from out‐of‐plane motions. There is, however, significant heterogeneity among the previous reports. We performed a systematic review and meta‐analysis to compare 3D strain values between adults with asymptomatic, subclinical diabetes mellitus (ie, patients with diabetes mellitus without known clinical manifestations of cardiac disease) and healthy controls. Methods and Results After systematic review of 5 databases, 12 valid studies (544 patients with diabetes mellitus and 489 controls) were eligible for meta‐analysis. Pooled means and mean difference (MD) using a random‐effects model for 3D global longitudinal, circumferential, radial, and area strain were calculated. Patients with diabetes mellitus had an overall 2.31 percentage points lower 3D global longitudinal strain than healthy subjects (16.6%, 95% CI, 15.7–17.6 versus 19.0; 95% CI, 18.2–19.7; MD, −2.31, 95% CI, −2.72 to −2.03). Similarly, 3D global circumferential strain (18.9%; 95% CI, 17.5–20.3 versus 20.5; 95% CI, 18.9–22.1; MD, −1.50; 95% CI, −2.09 to −0.91); 3D global radial strain (44.6%; 95% CI, 40.2–49.1 versus 48.2; 95% CI, 44.7–51.8; MD, −3.47; 95% CI, −4.98 to −1.97), and 3D global area strain (30.5%; 95% CI, 29.2–31.8 versus 32.4; 95% CI, 30.5–34.3; MD, −1.76; 95% CI, −2.74 to −0.78) were also lower in patients with diabetes mellitus. Significant heterogeneity was noted between studies for all strain directions (inconsistency factor [I2], 37%–78%). Meta‐regression in subgroup analysis of studies using the most popular vendor found higher prevalence of hypertension as a significant contributor to worse 3D global longitudinal strain. Higher hemoglobulin A1c was the most significant contributor to worse 3D global circumferential strain in patients with diabetes mellitus. Conclusions Three‐dimensional myocardial strain was reduced in all directions in asymptomatic diabetic patients. Hypertension and hemoglobin A1c were associated with worse 3D global longitudinal strain and 3D global circumferential strain, respectively. The Global Genome Initiative has sequenced and released 1961 DNA barcodes for genetic samples obtained as part of the Global Genome Initiative for Gardens Program. The dataset includes barcodes for 29 plant families and 309 genera that did not have sequences flagged as barcodes in GenBank and sequences from officially recognized barcoding genetic markers meet the data standard of the Consortium for the Barcode of Life. The genetic samples were deposited in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History Biorepository and their records were made public through the Global Genome Biodiversity Network’s portal. The DNA barcodes are now available on GenBank.

Telmisartan (TEL, an antihypertensive drug) belongs to Class II of the Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS) because of its poor aqueous solubility. In this study, we enhanced the solubility, bioavailability, and stability of TEL through the fabrication of TEL-loaded pH-modulated solid dispersion (TEL pHM-SD) using hot-melt extrusion (HME) technology. We prepared different TEL pHM-SD formulations by varying the ratio of the drug (TEL, 10–60% w/w), the hydrophilic polymer (Soluplus®, 30–90% w/w), and pH-modifier (sodium carbonate, 0–10% w/w). More so, the tablets prepared from an optimized formulation (F8) showed a strikingly improved in vitro dissolution profile (~30-fold) compared to the free drug tablets. The conversion of crystalline TEL to its amorphous state is observed through solid-state characterizations. During the stability study, F8 tablets had a better stability profile compared to the commercial product with F8, showing higher drug content, low moisture content, and negligible physical changes. Moreover, compared to the TEL powder, in vivo pharmacokinetic studies in rats showed superior pharmacokinetic parameters, with maximum serum concentration (Cmax) and area under the drug concentration–time curve (AUC0–∞) of the TEL pHM-SD formulation increasing by 6.61- and 5.37-fold, respectively. Collectively, the results from the current study showed that the inclusion of a hydrophilic polymer, pH modulator, and the amorphization of crystalline drugs in solid dispersion prepared by HME can be an effective strategy to improve the solubility and bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs without compromising the drug’s physical stability.

In the outer retina, G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling mediates phototransduction and synaptic transmission between photoreceptors and ON bipolar cells. In contrast, the functions of modulatory GPCR signaling networks in the inner retina are less well understood. We addressed this question by determining the consequences of augmenting modulatory Gi/o signaling driven by endogenous transmitters. This was done by analyzing the effects of genetically ablating the R7 RGS-binding protein (R7BP), a membrane-targeting protein and positive allosteric modulator of R7-RGS (regulator of the G protein signaling 7) family that deactivates Gi/oα subunits. We found that R7BP is expressed highly in starburst amacrine cells and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). As indicated by electroretinography and multielectrode array recordings of adult retina, ablation of R7BP preserved outer retina function, but altered the firing rate and latency of ON RGCs driven by rods and cones but not rods alone. In developing retina, R7BP ablation increased the burst duration of glutamatergic waves whereas cholinergic waves were unaffected. This effect on glutamatergic waves did not result in impaired segregation of RGC projections to eye-specific domains of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus. R7BP knockout mice exhibited normal spatial contrast sensitivity and visual acuity as assessed by optomotor reflexes. Taken together these findings indicate that R7BP-dependent regulation of R7-RGS proteins shapes specific aspects of light-evoked and spontaneous activity of RGCs in mature and developing retina.

Hypothesis: Spreading of liquids on soft solids often occurs intermittently, i.e., the liquid's wetting front switches between sticking and slipping. Studies of this so-called stick-slip wetting on soft solids mostly are confined within quasi-static or forced spreading conditions. In these situations, because the sticking duration is set much larger than the viscoelastic relaxation time of the solid, a ridge is persistently and fully developed at the wetting front as the soft solid yields to the liquid's surface tension. The sticking duration and spreading velocity, therefore, were shown to have little impact to the contact angle change required for stick-to-slip transitions. For unsteady wetting of soft solids, a commonly encountered but largely unexplored situation, we hypothesize that the stick-to-slip transition is controlled not only by a combination of sticking duration and the spreading velocity, but also by an increasing depinning threshold caused by the growing ridge at the wetting front., Experiment: We performed unsteady wetting experiment on soft solids by letting water droplets spread freely on soft solid surfaces of various stiffness. We capture both the stick-slip spreading behavior and growing wetting ridges using synchronous high-speed imaging and high-speed interferometry. Recorded data of liquid spreading and solid deforming at the wetting front were analyzed to shed light on the relation between stick-slip characteristics and the growing wetting ridge., Findings: We find that intermittent wetting on a soft solid surface results from a competition between three key factors: liquid inertia, capillary force change during sticking, and growing pinning force caused by the solid's viscoelastic response. We theoretically formulate their quantitative contributions to predict how stick-to-slip transitions occur, i.e., how the contact angle change and sticking duration depend on the liquid's spreading velocity and the solid's viscoelastic characteristics. Preclinical human-relevant modeling of organ-specific vasculature offers a unique opportunity to recreate pathophysiological intercellular, tissue-tissue, and cell-matrix interactions for a broad range of applications. Lung vasculature is particularly important due to its involvement in genesis and progression of rare, debilitating disorders as well as common chronic pathologies. Here, we provide an overview of the latest advances in the development of pulmonary vascular (PV) models using emerging microfluidic tissue engineering technology Organs-on-Chips (so-called PV-Chips). We first review the currently reported PV-Chip systems and their key features, and then critically discuss their major limitations in reproducing in vivo-seen and disease-relevant cellularity, localization, and microstructure. A functionally complete Boolean operator is sufficient for computational circuits of arbitrary complexity. We connected YES (buffer) with NOT (inverter) and two NOT four-way junction (4J) DNA gates to obtain IMPLY and NAND Boolean functions, respectively, each of which represents a functionally complete gate. The results show a technological path towards creating a DNA computational circuit of arbitrary complexity based on singleton NOT or a combination of NOT and YES gates, which is not possible in electronic computers. Preclinical human-relevant modeling of organ-specific vasculature offers a unique opportunity to recreate pathophysiological intercellular, tissue-tissue, and cell-matrix interactions for a broad range of applications. Here, we present a reliable, and simply reproducible process for constructing user-controlled long rounded extracellular matrix (ECM)-embedded vascular microlumens on-chip for endothelization and co-culture with stromal cells obtained from human lung. We demonstrate the critical impact of microchannel cross-sectional geometry and length on uniform distribution and magnitude of vascular wall shear stress, which is key when emulating in vivo -observed blood flow biomechanics in health and disease. In addition, we provide an optimization protocol for multicellular culture and functional validation of the system. Moreover, we show the ability to finely tune rheology of the three-dimensional natural matrix surrounding the vascular microchannel to match pathophysiological stiffness. In summary, we provide the scientific community with a matrix-embedded microvasculature on-chip populated with all -primary human-derived pulmonary endothelial cells and fibroblasts to recapitulate and interrogate lung parenchymal biology, physiological responses, vascular biomechanics, and disease biogenesis in vitro . Such a mix-and-match synthetic platform can be feasibly adapted to study blood vessels, matrix, and ECM-embedded cells in other organs and be cellularized with additional stromal cells.

Introduction: Deformities of the spine and thorax in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis affect appearance. They are a cause of inferiority, affecting psychological well-being and the social life of the patients. To contribute to curve evaluation, planning in curve correction, and improving the post-operative aesthetics, many studies on the correlation between appearance and radiography in the assessment of shoulder and neck balance have been reported recently. In general, these studies did not clarify which indices are required to evaluate shoulder and neck balance. This study aimed to learn about indices to assess shoulder and neck balance in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in correlation between clinical appearance and radiography., Materials and Methods: This observational study recruited 50 patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis who were 12 to 18 years of age with Cobb angle >10°. Based on Pearson correlation coefficient, radiographic parameters such as coracoid height difference (CHD), clavicle rib intersection distance (CRID), clavicle angle (CA), clavicle chest cage angle difference (CCAD), and T1 tilt angle were evaluated in correlation with clinical shoulder and neck balance by difference of inner shoulder height (SHi), difference of outer shoulder height (SHo), and neck tilt angle., Results: SHi was moderately correlated with T1 tilt angle (r [hereafter] = 0.45), CA (0.47), and CHD (0.57), high-moderately correlated with CRID (0.64), very-highly correlated with CCAD (0.84). SHo was moderately correlated with T1 tilt angle (0.43), highly correlated with CHD (0.60), CA (0.63), and CRID (0.72), and very-highly correlated with CCAD (0.89). T1 tilt angle was high-moderately correlated with neck tilt angle (0.76). The correlation coefficients between clinical and radiographic shoulder and neck balance according to sex, BMI, type of main curve, severity of main curve did not change significantly., Conclusion: There was a very high correlation between SHo (shoulder tilt) and CCAD (0.89); the correlation between SHo and CRID was high-moderate (0.72), but CRID is easier than CCAD to evaluate on radiographs. Distinctive post-translational modifications (PTM) characterize tau inclusions found in tauopathy patients. Using detergent-insoluble tau isolated from Alzheimer's disease (AD-tau) or Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP-tau) patients, we provide insights into whether phosphorylation of critical residues determine templated tau seeding. Our initial data with phosphorylation-ablating mutations (Ser/Thr → Ala) on select sites of P301L tau showed no changes in seeding efficacy by AD-tau or PSP-tau. Interestingly, when specific sites in the R1-R2 repeat domains (Ser262/Thr263/Ser289/Ser305) were mutated to phosphorylation-mimicking amino acid Glu, it substantially reduced the seeding efficiency of AD-tau, but not PSP-tau seeds. The resultant detergent-insoluble tau shows deficient phosphorylation on AT8, AT100, AT180 and PHF1 epitopes, indicating inter-domain cooperativity. We further identify Ser305 as a critical determinant of AD-tau-specific seeding, whereby the phospho-mimicking Ser305Glu tau abrogates seeding by AD-tau but not PSP-tau. This suggests that phosphorylation on Ser305 could be related to the formation of disease-specific tau strains. Apolipoprotein (APOE) E4 isoform is a major risk factor of Alzheimer's disease and contributes to metabolic and neuropathological abnormalities during brain aging. To provide insights into whether APOE4 genotype is related to tau-associated neurodegeneration, we have generated human P301S mutant tau transgenic mice (PS19) that carry humanized APOE alleles (APOE2, APOE3 or APOE4). In aging mice that succumbed to paralysis, PS19 mice homozygous for APOE3 had the longest lifespan when compared to APOE4 and APOE2 homozygous mice (APOE3 > APOE4 ~ APOE2). Heterozygous mice with one human APOE and one mouse Apoe allele did not show any variations in lifespan. At end-stage, PS19 mice homozygous for APOE3 and APOE4 showed equivalent levels of phosphorylated tau burden, inflammation levels and ventricular volumes. Compared to these cohorts, PS19 mice homozygous for APOE2 showed lower induction of phosphorylation on selective epitopes, though the effect sizes were small and variable. In spite of this, the APOE2 cohort showed shorter lifespan relative to APOE3 homozygous mice. None of the cohorts accumulated appreciable levels of phosphorylated tau compartmentalized in the insoluble cell fraction. RNAseq analysis showed that the induction of immune gene expression was comparable across all the APOE genotypes in PS19 mice. Notably, the APOE4 homozygous mice showed additional induction of transcripts corresponding to the Alzheimer's disease-related plaque-induced gene signature. In human Alzheimer's disease brain tissues, we found no direct correlation between higher burden of phosphorylated tau and APOE4 genotype. As expected, there was a strong correlation between phosphorylated tau burden with amyloid deposition in APOE4-positive Alzheimer's disease cases. Overall, our results indicate that APOE3 genotype may confer some resilience to tauopathy, while APOE4 and APOE2 may act through multiple pathways to increase the pathogenicity in the context of tauopathy., (© 2023. Vertical up-flow-constructed wetlands integrating with microbial fuel cell (VFCW-MFC) were evaluated for N H 4 + -N removal and bioelectricity recovery. The experiments were carried out in lab-scale VFCW-MFC microcosms treating synthetic domestic wastewater under different operational conditions of pH, hydraulic retention time, and mass loading rate. Effects of wild ornamental grass ( Cenchrus setaceus ) on treatment performance and voltage output were investigated simultaneously. Experiments demonstrated that the neutral pH of influents favoured N H 4 + -N removal and power generation. Extended retention time improved treatment capacity and power output but likely depended on the substrate availability. COD removal and power output increased, while N H 4 + -N removal decreased with increasing mass loading rates. At the loading rate of 88.31 mg COD/L.day, planted VFCW-MFCs exhibited better N H 4 + -N treatment performance (36.9%) and higher voltage output (132%-143%) than unplanted systems. Plants did not affect the COD removal efficiency of VFCW-MFCs (>95%). Power density was in the range of 1.26-1.59 mW/m 2 in planted microcosms with a maximum CE of 13.6%. The anode layer accounted for a major proportion of N H 4 + -N removal in VFCW-MFCs. This study implies that N H 4 + -N in domestic wastewaters with relatively high COD:N ratios can be treated effectively in up-flow CW-MFCs via anaerobic processes, including anammox and heterotrophic denitrifying processes. The mass loading rate could be a critical parameter to balance different microbial processes, thus, coincidently determining the potential of power recovery from wastewaters.

Background: The S209F variant of Abelson Interactor Protein 3 (ABI3) increases risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but little is known about its function in relation to AD pathogenesis., Methods: Here, we use a mouse model that is deficient in Abi3 locus to study how the loss of function of Abi3 impacts two cardinal neuropathological hallmarks of AD-amyloid β plaques and tau pathology. Our study employs extensive neuropathological and transcriptomic characterization using transgenic mouse models and adeno-associated virus-mediated gene targeting strategies., Results: Analysis of bulk RNAseq data confirmed age-progressive increase in Abi3 levels in rodent models of AD-type amyloidosis and upregulation in AD patients relative to healthy controls. Using RNAscope in situ hybridization, we localized the cellular distribution of Abi3 in mouse and human brains, finding that Abi3 is expressed in both microglial and non-microglial cells. Next, we evaluated Abi3 -/- mice and document that both Abi3 and its overlapping gene, Gngt2, are disrupted in these mice. Using multiple transcriptomic datasets, we show that expression of Abi3 and Gngt2 are tightly correlated in rodent models of AD and human brains, suggesting a tight co-expression relationship. RNAseq of the Abi3-Gngt2 -/- mice revealed upregulation of Trem2, Plcg2, and Tyrobp, concomitant with induction of an AD-associated neurodegenerative signature, even in the absence of AD-typical neuropathology. In APP mice, loss of Abi3-Gngt2 resulted in a gene dose- and age-dependent reduction in Aβ deposition. Additionally, in Abi3-Gngt2 -/- mice, expression of a pro-aggregant form of human tau exacerbated tauopathy and astrocytosis. Further, using in vitro culture assays, we show that the AD-associated S209F mutation alters the extent of ABI3 phosphorylation., Conclusions: These data provide an important experimental framework for understanding the role of Abi3-Gngt2 function and early inflammatory gliosis in AD. Our studies also demonstrate that inflammatory gliosis could have opposing effects on amyloid and tau pathology, highlighting the unpredictability of targeting immune pathways in AD., (© 2022. Viscous droplets impinging on soft substrates may exhibit several distinct behaviours including repeated bouncing, wetting, and hovering, i.e. , spreading and retracting after impact without bouncing back or wetting. We experimentally study the conditions enabling these characteristic behaviours by systematically varying substrate elasticity, impact velocity and liquid viscosity. For each substrate elasticity, the transition to wetting is determined as the dependence of the Weber number We, which measures the droplet's kinetic energy against its surface energy, on the Ohnesorge number Oh, which compares viscosity to inertia and capillarity. We find that while We at the wetting transition monotonically decreases with Oh for relatively rigid substrates, it exhibits a counter-intuitive behaviour in which it first increases and then gradually decreases for softer substrates. We experimentally determine the dependence of the maximum Weber number allowing non-wetting impacts on substrate elasticity and show that it provides an excellent quantitative measure of liquid repellency for a wide range of surfaces, from liquid to soft surfaces and non-deformable surfaces.

MHCII molecules, expressed by professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs) such as T cells and B cells, are hypothesized to play a key role in the response of cellular immunity to α-synuclein (α-syn). However, the role of cellular immunity in the neuroanatomic transmission of α-syn pre-formed fibrillar (PFF) seeds is undetermined. To illuminate whether cellular immunity influences the transmission of α-syn seeds from the periphery into the CNS, we injected preformed α-syn PFFs in the hindlimb of the Line M83 transgenic mouse model of synucleinopathy lacking MhcII. We showed that a complete deficiency in MhcII accelerated the appearance of seeded α-syn pathology and shortened the lifespan of the PFF-seeded M83 mice. To characterize whether B-cell and T-cell inherent MhcII function underlies this accelerated response to PFF seeding, we next injected α-syn PFFs in Rag1-/- mice which completely lacked these mature lymphocytes. There was no alteration in the lifespan or burden of endstage α-syn pathology in the PFF-seeded, Rag1-deficient M83+/- mice. Together, these results suggested that MhcII function on immune cells other than these classical APCs is potentially involved in the propagation of α-syn in this model of experimental synucleinopathy. We focused on microglia next, finding that while microglial burden was significantly upregulated in PFF-seeded, MhcII-deficient mice relative to controls, the microglial activation marker Cd68 was reduced in these mice, suggesting that these microglia were not responsive. Additional analysis of the CNS showed the early appearance of the neurotoxic astrocyte A1 signature and the induction of the Ifnγ-inducible anti-viral response mediated by MhcI in the MhcII-deficient, PFF-seeded mice. Overall, our data suggest that the loss of MhcII function leads to a dysfunctional response in non-classical APCs and that this response could potentially play a role in determining PFF-induced pathology. Collectively, our results identify the critical role of MhcII function in synucleinopathies induced by α-syn prion seeds.

In this study, we synthesized and modified titanate nanotubes (TNTs) under different conditions of acid rinsing and calcination. The produced materials were then characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The activity of material was evaluated via its application for disinfection of Coliforms and removal of natural organic matters (NOMs) in river water. Results showed that TNTs rinsed at pH 1.6 and calcined at 500°C had the highest removal efficiency for the treatment of Coliforms and NOMs in Sai Gon river water, possibly due to its high surface area, crystallinity, and surface acidity. The application of this TNTs material for the treatment of waters from Dong Nai River and Mekong River also show high removal efficiency, which could meet the quality standard for supply water, suggesting the potential of TNTs for practical drinking water treatment.

Traumatic brain injury can have devastating consequences for patients and extended hospital stays and recovery course. Recent data indicate that the initial insult causes profound changes to the immune system and leads to a pro-inflammatory state. This alteration in homeostasis predisposes patients to an increased risk of infection and underlying autoimmune conditions. Increased emphasis has been placed on understanding this process both in the clinical and preclinical literature. This review highlights the intrinsic inflammatory conditions that can occur within the initial hospital stay, discusses long-term immune consequences, highlights emerging treatment options, and delves into important pathways currently being investigated with preclinical models., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Financial constraints usually hinder students, especially those in low-middle income countries (LMICs), from seeking mental health interventions. Hence, it is necessary to identify effective, affordable and sustainable counter-stress measures for college students in the LMICs context. This study examines the sustained effects of mindfulness practice on the psychological outcomes and brain activity of students, especially when they are exposed to stressful situations. Here, we combined psychological and electrophysiological methods (EEG) to investigate the sustained effects of an 8-week-long standardized Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) intervention on the brain activity of college students. We found that the Test group showed a decrease in negative emotional states after the intervention, compared to the no statistically significant result of the Control group, as indicated by the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) (33% reduction in the negative score) and Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-42) scores (nearly 40% reduction of three subscale scores). Spectral analysis of EEG data showed that this intervention is longitudinally associated with increased frontal and occipital lobe alpha band power. Additionally, the increase in alpha power is more prevalent when the Test group was being stress-induced by cognitive tasks, suggesting that practicing MBSR might enhance the practitioners' tolerance of negative emotional states. In conclusion, MBSR intervention led to a sustained reduction of negative emotional states as measured by both psychological and electrophysiological metrics, which supports the adoption of MBSR as an effective and sustainable stress-countering approach for students in LMICs., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflict of interest to declare., (© 2022 The Authors.)

Apolipoprotein (APOE) is a major risk factor of Alzheimer's disease (AD), with the E2, E3 and E4 isoforms differentially regulating the burden of AD-associated neuropathologies, such as amyloid β and tau. In AD, pathological tau is thought to spread along neuroanatomic connections following a prion-like mechanism. To provide insights into whether APOE isoforms differentially regulate the prion properties of tau and determine trans-synaptic transmission of tauopathy, we have generated human P301S mutant tau transgenic mice (PS19) that carry human APOE (APOE2, APOE3 or APOE4) or mouse Apoe allele. Mice received intrahippocamal injections of preformed aggregates of K18-tau at young ages, which were analyzed 5 months post-inoculation. Compared to the parental PS19 mice with mouse Apoe alleles, PS19 mice expressing human APOE alleles generally responded to K18-tau seeding with more intense AT8 immunoreactive phosphorylated tau athology. APOE3 homozygous mice accumulated higher levels of AT8-reactive ptau and microgliosis relative to APOE2 or APOE4 homozygotes (E3 > E4~2). PS19 mice that were heterozygous for APOE3 showed similar results, albeit to a lesser degree. In the timeframe of our investigation, we did not observe significant induction of argentophilic or MC1-reactive neurofibrillary tau tangle in PS19 mice homozygous for human APOE. Aims: To illuminate the pathological synergy between Aβ and tau leading to emergence of neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) in Alzheimer's disease (AD), here, we have performed a comparative neuropathological study utilising three distinctive variants of human tau (WT tau, P301L mutant tau and S320F mutant tau). Previously, in non-transgenic mice, we showed that WT tau or P301L tau does not form NFT while S320F tau can spontaneously aggregate into NFT, allowing us to test the selective vulnerability of these different tau conformations to the presence of Aβ plaques., Methods: We injected recombinant AAV-tau constructs into neonatal APP transgenic TgCRND8 mice or into 3-month-old TgCRND8 mice; both cohorts were aged 3 months post injection. This allowed us to test how different tau variants synergise with soluble forms of Aβ (pre-deposit cohort) or with frank Aβ deposits (post-deposit cohort)., Results: Expression of WT tau did not produce NFT or altered Aβ in either cohort. In the pre-deposit cohort, S320F tau induced Aβ plaque deposition, neuroinflammation and synaptic abnormalities, suggesting that early tau tangles affect the amyloid cascade. In the post-deposit cohort, contemporaneous expression of S320F tau did not exacerbate amyloid pathology, showing a dichotomy in Aβ-tau synergy based on the nature of Aβ. P301L tau produced NFT-type inclusions in the post-deposit cohort, but not in the pre-deposit cohort, indicating pathological synergy with pre-existing Aβ deposits., Conclusions: Our data show that different tau mutations representing specific folding variants of tau synergise with Aβ to different extents, depending on the presence of cerebral deposits., (© 2021 British Neuropathological Society.)

A stone thrown in a lake captures air as it collides with water and sinks; likewise a rain drop falling on a flat surface traps air bubbles underneath and creates a spectacular splash. These natural occurrences, from bubble entrapment to liquid ejection, happen as air fails to escape from the closing gap between liquid and solid surfaces. Trapping of air is devastating for casting, coating, painting, and printing industries, or those intolerant of water entry noise. Attempts to eliminate the interfering air rely on either reducing the ambient pressure or modifying the solid surfaces. The former approach is inflexible in its implementation, while the latter one is inherently limited by the wetting speed of liquid or the draining capacity of air passages created on the solid. Here, we present a "divide and conquer" approach to split the thin air gap into tunnels and subsequently squeeze air out from the tunnels against its viscous resistance using spatially periodic dielectrophoretic force. Soft surfaces impacted by liquid droplets trap more air underneath than their rigid counterparts. The extended lifetime of the air film not only facilitates bouncing behaviours of the impacting droplets but also increases the possibility of interactions between the air film itself and the air cavity formed inside the droplets by capillary waves. Such interactions may cause rupture of the trapped air film by a so-called dimple inversion phenomenon and suppress bouncing. In this work, we systematically investigate the relationship between air cavity collapse and air film rupture for water droplets impacting soft, hydrophobic surfaces. By constructing a bouncing-to-wetting phase diagram based on the rupturing dynamics of the trapped air film, we observe that the regime in which air film rupture is induced by dimple inversion consistently separates the bouncing regime and the one in which wetting is caused by random rupture. We also found that air film rupture by dimple inversion in-turn affects both the collapsing dynamics of the air cavity and the resulting high-speed jet. We then provide a detailed characterisation of the collapsing dynamics of the air cavity and subsequent jetting.

Background: The science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields are often underrepresented due to lack of interest or exposure. The Brain Bee is a neuroscience competition for high school students meant to inspire future leaders in the neurosciences. A regional Brain Bee competition hosted in West Virginia was led by medical students and neurology residents with the goal of increasing high school student interest in the neurosciences., Activity: The West Virginia Brain Bee competition consisted of a neuroanatomy practical, a written exam, and a clinical assessment. Other fun neuroscience educational activities were also offered to students throughout the competition day. Students were surveyed before and after the competition day., Results: Student interest in pursuing a neuroscience career increased (3.24 to 3.58, p  = 0.043), and confidence in neuroscience knowledge increased (2.88 to 3.12, p  = 0.036). Qualitative assessment revealed the importance of role models and a supportive environment for student learning., Conclusion: The West Virginia Brain Bee increased high school student interest in and confidence of neuroscience knowledge.
