In this work, we studied the growth, survival, and peptidolytic activity of Lactobacillus plantarum I91 in a hard-cheese model consisting of a sterile extract of Reggianito cheese. To assess the influence of the primary starter and initial proteolysis level on these parameters, we prepared the extracts with cheeses that were produced using 2 different starter strains of Lactobacillus helveticus 138 or 209 (Lh138 or Lh209) at 3 ripening times: 3, 90, and 180 d. The experimental extracts were inoculated with Lb. plantarum I91; the control extracts were not inoculated and the blank extracts were heattreated to inactivate enzymes and were not inoculated. All extracts were incubated at 34°C for 21 d, and then the pH, microbiological counts, and proteolysis profiles were determined. The basal proteolysis profiles in the extracts of young cheeses made with either strain tested were similar, but many differences between the proteolysis profiles of the extracts of the Lh138 and Lh209 cheeses were found when riper cheeses were used. The pH values in the blank and control extracts did not change, and no microbial growth was detected. In contrast, the pH value in experimental extracts decreased, and this decrease was more pronounced in extracts obtained from either of the young cheeses and from the Lh209 cheese at any stage of ripening. Lactobacillus plantarum I91 grew up to 8 log during the first days of incubation in all of the extracts, but then the number of viable cells decreased, the extent of which depended on the starter strain and the age of the cheese used for the extract. The decrease in the counts of Lb. plantarum I91 was observed mainly in the extracts in which the pH had diminished the most. In addition, the extracts that best supported the viability of Lb. plantarum I91 during incubation had the highest free amino acids content. The effect of Lb. plantarum I91 on the proteolysis profile of the extracts was marginal. Significant changes in the content of free amino acids suggested that the catabolism of free amino acids by Lb. plantarum I91 prevailed in a weakly proteolyzed medium, whereas the release of amino acids due to pep- tidolysis overcame their catabolism in a medium with high levels of free amino acids. Lactobacillus plantarum I91 was able to use energy sources other than lactose to support its growth because equivalent numbers of cells were observed in extracts containing residual amounts of lactose and in lactose-depleted extracts. The con- tribution of Lb. plantarum I91 to hard-cooked cheese peptidolysis was negligible compared with that of the starter strain; however, its ability to transform amino acids is a promising feature of this strain. Biologically mediated modifications of the abiotic environment, also called ecosystem engineering, can significantly affect a broad range of ecosystems. Nevertheless, remarkably little work has focused on the costs and benefits that ecosystem engineers obtain from traits that underlie their ecosystem engineering capacity. We addressed this topic by comparing two autogenic engineers, which vary in the degree in which they affect their abiotic environment via their physical structure. That is, we compared two plant species from the intertidal coastal zone (Spanrtina anglica and Zostera noltii), whose shoots are exposed to similar currents and waves, but differ in the extent that they modify their environment via reduction of hydrodynamic energy. Our results indicate that there can be trade-offs related to the traits that underlies autogenic ecosystem engineering capacity. Dissipation of hydrodynamic forces from waves was roughly a factor of three higher in vegetation with stiff leaves compared to those with flexible leaves. Drag was highest and most sensitive to hydrodynamic forces in stiff vegetation that does not bend with the flow. Thus, shoot stiffness determines both the capacity to reduce hydrodynamic energy (i.e., proxy for ecosystem engineering capacity) and the drag that needs to be resisted (i.e., proxy for associated costs). Our study underlines the importance of insight in the trade-offs involved in ecosystem engineering as a first step toward understanding the adaptive nature of ecosystem engineering. The effects of a new inhaled antimuscarinic drug, oxitropium bromide, and of a slow-release theophylline preparation upon nocturnal asthma were compared in a placebo-controlled double-blind study. Two samples were studied: 12 patients received oxitropium at 600 micrograms (6 subjects) or at 400 micrograms t.i.d. (6 subjects) whereas 11 received theophylline at 300 mg b.i.d. Morning dipping, assessed by the fall in peak flow overnight, was significantly reduced in the periods when either active drug was taken, whereas no difference was noticed during the placebo administration. No significant difference was noticed between results obtained with either active drug, as well as with either dosage of oxitropium. No subject reported side effects of oxitropium, as compared to three subjects reporting nausea, vomiting and tremors after theophylline. Oxitropium proves to be a valuable alternative to theophylline in nocturnal asthma, since it is equally potent, safer and does not require the titration of dosage. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This study assessed in vitro apical leakage in root canals filled with gutta-percha and Ketac-Endo using different dentin conditioning and filling techniques. The root canals of 63 single-rooted teeth were instrumented and randomly divided into the following four groups: group A canals were irrigated with 25% tannic acid and filled with Ketac-Endo and a standardized gutta-percha cone; group B canals were irrigated with 1% NaOCl and filled as in group A; group C canals were irrigated with 25% tannie acid filled with Ketac-Endo and a chloroform-softened gutta-percha cone adapted to the canal walls; group D canals were irrigated with 1% NaOCl and filled with Grossman's sealer and laterally condensed gutta-percha. After storage for 72 hours at 37 ° C and 100% humidity, the gutta-percha was removed to a level 4 mm short of the working length, using a Peeso reamer. Teeth were immersed in India ink for 48 hours and cleared, and the coronal extent of dye penetration examined under a binocular dissecting microscope at X 15 magnification. The mean value of leakage for group A was 0.86 mm, for group b 2.23 mm, for group C 2.34 mm, and for group D 0.56 mm. Turkey's multiple comparison test disclosed significant differences (P <0.05) between group A and group B and C, and between group D and groups B and C. Abstract: Seagrasses are marine flowering plants distributed worldwide. They are however threatened, mostly due to the increase of human activities. Seagrasses have the capacity to adapt their morphological, physiological, and mechanical traits to their local conditions. Mechanical traits have been identified as a good tool to investigate a plant‐species capacity to withstand physical forces or disturbances but are still sparsely studied in seagrasses. With this study, we aimed to assess how the mechanical traits of a broadly spread seagrass species vary along a latitudinal gradient in relation to its morphometric plasticity and nutrient status. We found that seagrasses acclimate their mechanical traits in relation to their physiological or morphological traits, both over the growing season and across a latitudinal range: leaves were weaker and thinner in northern areas, particularly at the end of the growing season. Besides the influence of the latitudinal gradient, leaf mechanical strength and stiffness were both strongly affected by their morphometric plasticity. Moreover, we showed that leaves mechanical traits change depending on their nutrient status: leaves were stronger and stiffer in oligotrophic conditions as compared to more eutrophic conditions. Thus, our results imply that, under eutrophication, leaves become weaker and thus more vulnerable to physical forces. This vulnerability is higher in the north at the end of the growing season. The latter is consistent with the more ephemeral character of northern seagrass meadows, in contrast to the more evergreen southern meadows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work deals with the determination of bromides and chlorides ions in waste water due to its toxicity in the Production Laboratory of the Chemical Bioactive Center. It was studied in relation to the different steps of the production process of medicaments. The determination of these ions in waste water was done by means of potentiometric techniques. Such techniques are based on the use of selective electrodes to bromide and silver ions using potentiometric valoration and standard addition variants. Parameters related to these techniques such as: repeatibility, reproducibility, accuracy and specificity were also evaluated. By means of the application of these techniques to the determination of bromides we found a quantitative limit of 5 mg.L-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
