This paper presents a novel method to improve drill pressure measurement accuracy in slim-hole drilling within the petroleum industry, a sector often plagued by extreme conditions that compromise data integrity. We introduce a temperature compensation model based on a Chaotic-Initiated Adaptive Whale Optimization Algorithm (C-I-WOA) for optimizing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), dubbed the C-I-WOA-CNN model. This approach enhances the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) initialization through chaotic mapping, boosts the population diversity, and features an adaptive weight recalibration mechanism for an improved global search and local optimization. Our results reveal that the C-I-WOA-CNN model significantly outperforms traditional CNNs in its convergence speed, global searching, and local exploitation capabilities, reducing the average absolute percentage error in pressure parameter predictions from 1.9089% to 0.86504%, thereby providing a dependable solution for correcting temperature-induced measurement errors in downhole settings. Targets faced by inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) are often non-cooperative, with target maneuvering being the main manifestation of this non-cooperation. Maneuvers cause ISAR imaging results to be severely defocused, which can create huge difficulties in target identification. In addition, as the ISAR bandwidth continues to increase, the impact of migration through resolution cells (MTRC) on imaging results becomes more significant. Target non-cooperation may also result in sparse aperture, leading to the failure of traditional ISAR imaging algorithms. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm to realize MTRC correction and sparse aperture ISAR imaging for maneuvering targets simultaneously named whale optimization algorithm–fast iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (WOA-FISTA). In this algorithm, FISTA is used to perform MTRC correction and sparse aperture ISAR imaging efficiently and WOA is adopted to estimate the rotational parameter to eliminate the effects of maneuvering on imaging results. Experimental results based on simulation and measured datasets prove that the proposed algorithm implements sparse aperture ISAR imaging and MTRC correction for maneuvering targets simultaneously. The complex well function formulations developed for unconfined aquifer systems make the determination of aquifer parameters difficult and inefficient using classical methods. In addition, the dimensional dependency of aquifer parameters, as well as the non-linear and non-convex nature of inverse groundwater problems, can make the stand-alone use of the metaheuristic algorithms inefficient in terms of computation time and effort, producing non-unique solutions. Therefore, a novel optimisation framework was established to interpret pumping test data collected from an unconfined aquifer. The proposed approach works with four inputs that are based on the hybrid use of two non-dimensional physical and newly introduced two non-physical parameters. The method has the benefit of the simplicity of traditional methods and the accuracy of the differential evolution algorithm (DEA). The capability of the proposed scheme was broadly examined using several pumping test scenarios, including hypothetical and real field test datasets. Sensitivity analysis was also performed to understand the uncertainty associated with the estimated flow parameters. The results show that the proposed scheme, powered by the DEA, is able to achieve outstanding estimation performance compared with conventional methods and other nature-inspired algorithms. This study seeks to present a sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) framework to model the compressive strength (fc′) of concrete containing waste foundry sand (WFS), with the aim of minimizing the need for time‐consuming laboratory tests and skilled technicians. For this purpose, artificial neural network (ANN) is hybridized with two metaheuristic algorithms—particle swarm optimization (PSO) and ant colony optimization (ACO) to predict the fc′ of 340 samples containing WFS collected from the literature. Results indicated that the ACO + ANN model showed the best performance with the Pearson coefficient of 0.9971, mean absolute error of 0.0221 MPa, and root mean squared error of 0.7473 MPa. The values of prediction errors exhibited that more than 90% of them in the ACO + ANN model fall within the range of (−1.5 MPa, 1.5 MPa), while this range for the PSO + ANN and traditional ANN models was obtained as (−3 MPa, 3 MPa) and (−4 MPa, 4 MPa), respectively. Furthermore, the proposed ACO + ANN model predicted the fc′ in the range of 5.24–54.48 MPa. Besides, the results indicated that the water‐to‐cement ratio, cement strength class, and cement content had the most significant impact on the fc′ of WFS‐containing concrete. Finally, a comparison was made between the proposed ACO + ANN model and four other AI models recently proposed in the literature, in which the performance criteria demonstrated that the proposed ACO + ANN model outperformed the models in the literature. Supply Chain (SC) Optimization is a key activity in today's industry with the goal of increasing operational efficiency, reducing costs, and improving customer satisfaction. Traditional optimization methods often struggle to effectively use resources while handling complex and dynamic Supply chain networks. This paper introduces a novel biomimetic metaheuristic algorithm called the Wombat Optimization Algorithm (WOA) for supply chain optimization. This algorithm replicates the natural behaviors observed in wombats living in the wild, particularly focusing on their foraging tactics and evasive maneuvers towards predators. The theory of WOA is described and then mathematically modeled in two phases: (i) exploration based on the simulation of wombat movements during foraging and trying to find food and (ii) exploitation based on simulating wombat movements when diving towards nearby tunnels to defend against its predators. The effectiveness of WOA in addressing optimization challenges is assessed by handling the CEC 2017 test suite across various problem dimensions, including 10, 30, 50, and 100. The findings of the optimization indicate that WOA demonstrates a strong ability to effectively manage exploration and exploitation, and maintains a balance between them throughout the search phase to deliver optimal solutions for optimization problems. A total of twelve well-known metaheuristic algorithms are called upon to test their performance against WOA in the optimization process. The outcomes of the simulations reveal that WOA outperforms the other algorithms, achieving superior results across most benchmark functions and securing the top ranking as the most efficient optimizer. Using a Wilcoxon rank sum test statistical analysis, it has been proven that WOA outperforms other algorithms significantly. WOA is put to the test with twenty-two constrained optimization problems from the CEC 2011 test suite and four engineering design problems to showcase its ability to solve real-world optimization problems. The adoption of deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) has surged in recent years because of their imperative practicalities in different disciplines. Among these feasible workabilities are the noteworthy contributions of ML and DL, especially ant colony optimization (ACO) and whale optimization algorithm (WOA) ameliorated with neural networks (NNs) to identify specific categories of skin lesion disorders (SLD) precisely, supporting even high-experienced healthcare providers (HCPs) in performing flexible medical diagnoses, since historical patient databases would not necessarily help diagnose other patient situations. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of rich investigations respecting the contributory influences of ACO and WOA in the SLD classification, owing to the recent adoption of ML and DL in the medical field. Accordingly, a comprehensive review is conducted to shed light on relevant ACO and WOA functionalities for enhanced SLD identification. The half-open multi-depot vehicle routing problem (HOMDVRP) is a typical decision optimization problem in the field of collaborative logistics that considers resource sharing. This study aims to develop an effective meta-heuristic algorithm for solving the HOMDVRP. Firstly, a mixed-integer programming model of HOMDVRP is established to minimize the total travel distance of the vehicles. After that, a novel hybrid adaptive simulated annealing and tempering algorithm (HASATA) is proposed based on the features of HOMDVRP. The proposed algorithm combines the strengths of the simulated annealing algorithm and the large-neighborhood search algorithm to balance the algorithm's searching capabilities in both breadth and depth. Meanwhile, an adaptive Markov chain length mechanism and a tempering mechanism are designed to improve the algorithm's computational efficiency and convergence ability. Finally, simulation experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model and the computational performance of the proposed algorithm. Four comparison algorithms are selected and analyzed using 24 groups of problem instances. The comparison results show that the proposed HASATA can solve the HOMDVRP more efficiently and obtain a solution with better optimization performance and satisfactory stability. This study investigated the compressibility of clay (Cc) for soft ground improvement and developed six optimized metaheuristic-based extreme learning machine (ELM) models (particle swarm optimization (PSO)-ELM, moth search optimization (MSO)-ELM, firefly optimization (FO)-ELM, cuckoo search optimization (CSO)-ELM, bees optimization (BO)-ELM, and ant colony optimization (ACO)-ELM) to predict Cc. A total of 739 laboratory tests were conducted to develop the models, and 517 datasets were used for training, while the remaining 222 samples were used for testing. The results showed that the accuracy of the developed models was improved by 3–5% compared to the original ELM model. The BO-ELM and MSO-ELM models were identified as the most effective models for predicting Cc, with accuracies ranging from 86.5% to 87%. The study suggests that the MSO-ELM model should be used if training time is critical. This paper presents a novel hybrid approach, fusing genetic algorithms (GA) and penguin search optimization (PSeOA), to address the flow shop scheduling problem (FSSP). GA utilizes selection, crossover, and mutation inspired by natural selection, while PSeOA emulates penguin foraging behavior for efficient exploration. The approach integrates GA's genetic diversity and solution space exploration with PSeOA's rapid convergence, further improved with FSSP-specific modifications. Aquila Optimization (AO) is a recently proposed meta-heuristic algorithm, which has been proved to be more competitive than other meta-heuristic algorithms in function optimization and practical applications. However, when solving more complex optimization problems, AO still has the shortcomings of local optimal stagnation and low solving accuracy. To overcome these shortcomings, an improved Aquila Optimization algorithm (IAO) is proposed in this paper. During the initialization of IAO population, a hybrid chaotic mapping mechanism was introduced to initialize the population, improving both the population diversity and the uniformity of the population distribution. The elite dimensional lens imaging learning strategy is introduced for elite individual to improve the optimization quality of the algorithm as elite individual has more useful information than ordinary individuals. Then the probabilistic jump mechanism of simulated annealing algorithm is used to select the position update mode to balance local development and global search. The experimental results on the CEC2005 test function verify the viability and effectiveness of IAO. IAO is used to the multi-threshold segmentation problem based on symmetric cross entropy to demonstrate its capacity to resolve practical optimization problems. The establishment of an electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) infrastructure plays a vital role in fostering the sustainable expansion of the electric vehicle sector. The unplanned placement of EVCS raises various technical and economic issues in the distribution network, and it can lead to increased energy losses in the distribution system. Installing EVCSs and DGs at strategically chosen positions is essential to minimize the impact of EV load on the distribution network. To address these issues, this work has proposed a whale optimization technique (WOT) for optimizing the placement and sizing of EVCS and DG. This novel approach of formulating the multi-objective problem of allocating electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, along with DGs and capacitors simultaneously improves the voltage stability, minimizes active and reactive power losses in the radial distribution system, and requires execution time. A forward–backward power flow method has been carried out for load flow calculations. The efficacy of the proposed approach has been applied on the standard IEEE-33 and 69-bus test systems and the obtained results have been compared with the other latest optimization techniques. The simulation results validate the performance and effectiveness of the Whale Optimization Technique, and it has been analyzed that the optimized sizes and allocation of EVCSs, DGs, and capacitors lead to an extensive reduction in power losses of 81.33% and 80% in the case of active power and 78.46% and 80.26% in the case of reactive power for the IEEE-33 and 69-bus test systems, respectively. To achieve high precision and robust control of switched reluctance machines (SRMs), this paper proposes a novel rotor position estimation method based on gain-optimized sliding mode observer (SMO) with neural networks and whale optimization algorithm. For the SMO, this paper uses the easily measured phase current to constitute the error function of the SMO, which requires less pre-stored data. Using the neural networks' powerful nonlinear mapping capability, the relationship between the sliding mode gains and speed estimation error and the position estimation error is obtained, and then the whale optimization algorithm is used to find the optimal sliding mode gains in the restricted range. This study presents an advanced metaheuristic approach termed the Enhanced Gorilla Troops Optimizer (EGTO), which builds upon the Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA) to enhance the search capabilities of the Gorilla Troops Optimizer (GTO). Like numerous other metaheuristic algorithms, the GTO encounters difficulties in preserving convergence accuracy and stability, notably when tackling intricate and adaptable optimization problems, especially when compared to more advanced optimization techniques. Addressing these challenges and aiming for improved performance, this paper proposes the EGTO, integrating high and low-velocity ratios inspired by the MPA. The EGTO technique effectively balances exploration and exploitation phases, achieving impressive results by utilizing fewer parameters and operations. Evaluation on a diverse array of benchmark functions, comprising 23 established functions and ten complex ones from the CEC2019 benchmark, highlights its performance. Comparative analysis against established optimization techniques reveals EGTO's superiority, consistently outperforming its counterparts such as tuna swarm optimization, grey wolf optimizer, gradient based optimizer, artificial rabbits optimization algorithm, pelican optimization algorithm, Runge Kutta optimization algorithm (RUN), and original GTO algorithms across various test functions. Furthermore, EGTO's efficacy extends to addressing seven challenging engineering design problems, encompassing three-bar truss design, compression spring design, pressure vessel design, cantilever beam design, welded beam design, speed reducer design, and gear train design. The cooperative coevolution framework was introduced to address the shortcomings of metaheuristic algorithms in solving continuous large-scale global optimization problems. By dividing the problem into subcomponents which can be optimized separately, the framework can improve on both the solution's quality as well as the computational speed by exposing a degree of parallelism. Distributed computing platforms, such as Apache Spark, have long been used to improve the speed of different algorithms in solving computational problems. This work proposes a distributed implementation of the cooperative coevolution framework for solving large-scale global optimization problems on the Apache Spark distributed computing platform. By using a formerly outlined distributed variant of the cooperative coevolution framework, features of the Spark platform are utilized to enhance the computational speed of the algorithm while maintaining comparable search quality to other works in the literature. To test for the proposed implementation's improvement in computational speed, the CEC 2010 large-scale global optimization benchmark functions are used due to the diversity they offer in terms of complexity, separability and modality. Results of the proposed distributed implementation suggest that a speedup of up to ×3.36 is possible on large-scale global optimization benchmarks using the Apache Spark platform. Smart agriculture is a popular domain due to its intensified growth in recent times. This domain aggregates the advantages of several computing technologies, where the IoT is the most popular and beneficial. In this work, a novel and effective deep learning-based framework is developed to detect intrusions in smart farming systems. The architecture is three-tier, with the first tier being the sensor layer, which involves the placement of sensors in agricultural areas. The second tier is the Fog Computing Layer (FCL), which consists of Fog nodes, and the proposed IDS is implemented in each Fog node. The gathered information is transferred to this fog layer for further data analysis. The third tier is the cloud computing layer, which provides data storage and end-to-end services. The proposed model includes a fused CNN model with the bidirectional gated recurrent unit (Bi-GRU) model to detect and classify intruders. An attention mechanism is included within the BiGRU model to find the key features responsible for identifying the DDoS attack. In addition, the accuracy of the classification model is improved by using a nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimization algorithm called the Wild Horse Optimization (WHO) algorithm. The last layer is the cloud layer, which collects data from fog nodes and offers storage services. The proposed system will be implemented in the Python platform, using ToN-IoT and APA-DDoS attack datasets for assessment. The proposed system outperforms the existing methods in accuracy (99.35%), detection rate (98.99%), precision (99.9%) and F-Score (99.08%) for the APA DDoS attack dataset and the achieved accuracy of the ToN-IoT dataset (99.71%), detection rate (99.02%), precision (99.89%) and F-score (99.05%). Cognitive radio (CR) technology is crucial for enabling dynamic spectrum management. CR allows opportunistic spectrum sharing with licensed primary radio (PR) users by allowing the so-called secondary users to dynamically access the under-utilized parts of the frequency bands that are allocated/licensed to the PR networks (PRNs). The CR system pays a utilization-dependent price to PRNs for utilizing the unused spectrum. An essential challenge in this domain is how to characterize the economic implications of spectrum sharing between the CR system and PRNs. Specifically, we consider a CR system with two competing CR service providers. This market model is known as the "duopoly model," a market structure premise that consists of two companies providing the same type of service. For such a model, we investigate the problem of maximizing the overall achieved profit in the CR system. Specifically, we mathematically formulate the profit-maximization spectrum assignment problem for the two CR providers subject to spectrum sharing, power distribution, spectrum pricing, and quality of service constraints. We demonstrate that this optimization problem is an NP-hard binary nonlinear programming problem. Therefore, we adopt a meta-heuristic optimization method based on Antlion Optimization to solve the problem suboptimally. Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) is a novel meta-heuristic optimization algorithm. The algorithm is inspired by the behavior of Harris Hawks collaborating with each other to pursue prey in nature. The algorithm has the advantages of simple structure, fewer parameters, easy implementation, and excellent performance on high-dimensional problems. However, the algorithm also suffers from the inability to strike a good balance between exploration and exploitation, low convergence accuracy, and slow convergence speed in the early stage. In response to these defects, this paper will introduce three strategies to the HHO: a non-negative stochastic shrinkage exponential energy function, a Cauchy-Gaussian-based dynamic variance reduction selection strategy, and a greedy-difference-based selection strategy. The improved algorithm TSHHO is analyzed on the well-established 28 benchmark test functions, and four industrial engineering design problems. The experimental results show that the TSHHO algorithm proposed in this paper can achieve a better balance in the exploration and development stages,the strategies significantly improve the search efficiency, convergence accuracy, and robustness of the algorithm. Fog Computing paradigm that provisions low-latency computing services at the edge network, is a bonanza for supply chain computing resources in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. In different scenarios such as smart homes/healthcare systems, multiple IoT applications are distributed simultaneously in cloud and fog nodes to provide different IoT-based services. In addition, each program requires resources and has its desired quality of service (QoS) which should be met. One of the key challenges in fog computing environment is how to efficiently allocate resources to IoT applications because inefficient resource allocation leads to burdening providers high costs and it lowers down the delivered QoS to users. Since the majority of IoT applications are time-sensitive, the low delay and near physically allocated resources improve the amount of delivered QoS. Therefore, the resource clustering algorithms with the lowest distance error rate and the lowest delay as a consequence are favorable. The aim is to reduce clustering errors and improve the overall performance of the system. This paper formulates resource allocation to IoT applications in heterogeneous 4-layered fog platforms to an optimization problem. To solve this problem, a fusion approach incorporating a genetic algorithm (GA) and the k-means clustering approach is presented. Firstly, it utilizes the k-means approach and Jaccard measurement to cluster fog nodes with a minimum clustering rate. Then, the resources of fog clusters are allocated to IoT devices with the minimum error rate by incorporating GA algorithm. This selection of processing nodes in a fog layer helps to minimize latency and allows applications to access resources simultaneously. The simulation results in extensive scenarios prove the superiority of the proposed algorithm against other successful meta-heuristic approaches in terms of the objective function and lowest error/delay rate. This study proposes an optimal approach for enhancing the quality of a weak electrical power distribution system by utilizing thyristor‐controlled series capacitors (TCSC). The proposed approach considers various system components, including shunt capacitors and distributed generators that rely on renewable energy sources, which are characterized by uncertainty due to changing weather conditions. The proposed system maximizes the benefits of these components by updating its parameters to improve the distribution power system's quality under all operating conditions, which change due to the varying energy generated by the distributed generators and load changes. The optimal TCSC values are calculated for all operating conditions using the Hyper‐Spherical Search with graded objective functions management strategy (HSSA‐GOFMS) algorithm. The GOFMS converts all restrictions into objective functions with limits and prioritizes the search for objectives according to a sequential system of priorities. This strategy prevents the possibility of non‐convergence. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in improving the performance quality of a weak electrical distribution system. The proposed strategy achieves the target voltage level limits within nominal values, even with the interference of the system with generators distributed at variable power levels. This paper deals with the design, simulation, and practical modeling of metamaterial-based multiband conformal bandpass filter (BPF) for various wireless communication applications with improved quality factors. The novel metamaterial in the form of a split ring resonator is loaded on the ground plane face of the proposed BPF. The overall dimension of the designed BPF is only 2 8 × 2 8 mm 2 . The proposed BPF is tuned initially for quality factor enhancement based on the thickness of the substrate, physical parameters of the f transmission line, ground plane, externally loaded elements, and the gap in the metamaterial loading. The suggested filter operates at triple band covering the frequency bands from 1.4 to 2.2, 3.6 to 3.9, and 4.8 to 5.9 GHz, which are suitable for sub-6 GHz 5G and other wireless applications. The insertion loss is observed as 1 dB, which is suitable for the proposed BPF. The conformal behavior of the filter is judged through bending deformation analysis at various bending positions like (15 ∘ , 30 ∘ , 45 ∘ , 60 ∘ , and 90 ∘ ). The proposed BPF retains triple pass band characteristics at various bending deformations, which makes it suitable to be used in curved structures or flexible circuitry. The theory of equivalent circuits and quality factor (Q) of the designed BPF is discussed in this paper. The results are analyzed experimentally through ANRITSU-MS2037C combinational analyzer. In recent years, there is massive development of new metaheuristics as stochastic methods. Meanwhile, there is not any metaheuristics is powerful to handle all problems as stated in the no-free-lunch (NFL) theory. Based on this circumstance, this paper introduces a new swarm-based metaheuristics with the main strategy moving toward the resultant of better swarm members and avoiding the resultant of worse swarm members called group better-worse algorithm (GBWA). It consists of five searches: moving toward the best swarm member, moving toward the resultant of better swarm members, moving away from the resultant of worse swarm members, searching locally, and jumping to the opposite area. GBWA is then evaluated in three ways. The first evaluation is a comparative evaluation where GBWA is compared to five recent metaheuristics: coati optimization algorithm (COA), average and subtraction-based optimization (ASBO), clouded leopard optimization (CLO), total interaction algorithm (TIA), and osprey optimization algorithm (OOA). The second evaluation is the individual search evaluation. The third evaluation is hyperparameter test. The collection of 23 classic functions is chosen as the use case in all evaluations. Dams are among the most important civil engineering structures, but they are also susceptible to damage that can endanger their stability and functionality. It is therefore crucial to detect any damage in dams to ensure their long-term integrity and overall safety. In light of this, the present study proposes a new two-stage method for identifying damage in concrete gravity dams. In the first stage, a modal curvature-based damage index (MCBDI) is presented to detect the location of suspected damaged zones along the height of the dam. The mode shape data collected from some measurement points on the downstream side of the dam is used to accomplish this task. In the second stage, the pathfinder algorithm (PFA) as a powerful meta-heuristic optimization technique is applied to determine the severity of potentially damaged zones by minimizing an objective function specified in terms of natural frequencies and mode shapes. The capability and effectiveness of the proposed method are evaluated by implementing two numerical simulation examples of concrete gravity dams under both noise-free and noisy conditions. The results obtained suggest that the proposed two-stage method, comprising the MCBDI indicator and the PFA algorithm, represents an accurate and efficient approach for localizing and quantifying damage in concrete gravity dams. Predicting the drill penetration rate is a fundamental requirement in mining operations, profoundly impacting both the cost-effectiveness of mining activities and strategic mine planning. Given the intricate web of factors influencing rotary drilling performance, the necessity for advanced modeling techniques becomes evident. To this end, the hybrid extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) was utilized to gauge the penetration rate of rotary drilling machines, utilizing random search, grid search, Harris Hawk optimization (HHO), and the dragonfly algorithm (DA) as metaheuristic algorithms. Our research draws from extensive data collected in copper mine case studies, encompassing both field and investigational data. This dataset incorporates critical material properties, such as tensile strength (TS), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), as well as vital rock-mass characteristics including joint direction (JD), joint spacing (JS), and bit diameter (D). Our investigation evaluates the reliability of these prediction methods using various performance indicators, including mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), average absolute relative error (AARE), and coefficient of determination (R2). The multivariate analysis reveals that the HHO-XGB model stands out, demonstrating superior prediction accuracy (MAE: 0.457; RMSE: 2.19; AARE: 2.29; R2: 0.993) compared to alternative models. Furthermore, our sensitivity analysis emphasizes the substantial impact of uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength on the drill penetration rate. This underlines the importance of considering these material properties in mining operations. Structural engineering is a field with several optimization approaches. Concordantly, the goal in optimum design is the generation of the lightest, cheapest, or most sustainable engineering design for any type of structure or structural member. In this study, some optimization approaches were presented for structures including 25 and 72-bar space trusses. To find the smallest weights were ensured for both structures. Optimization approaches related to metaheuristics and modifications of them were developed by inspired by features of nature, abilities of lives and mechanisms of chemical/physical processes. The employed three techniques that are flower pollination algorithm, Jaya algorithm and the hybrid algorithm developed via them were compared to each other through some parameters by calculating different statistical expressions containing the best, average and standard deviation of the objective function. Also, the performance of whole metaheuristic versions is evaluated with some literature researches to find the most effective one to minimize the structural weights. These results have observed that the all versions of proposed metaheuristic algorithms are generally successful, and effective to minimize the objective function comparison to algorithms used in previous studies. The utilization of cloud computing environments is highly popular for carrying out workflow executions due to its ability to provide clients with immediate access to computing resources. Among the various workflow scheduling problems in the cloud, deadline-constrained workflow scheduling has garnered increasing attention in recent years. This paper introduces a hybrid scheduling algorithm known as Partial Critical Path–Ant Colony Optimization (PCP–ACO), which aims to minimize the execution cost of a workflow while ensuring that it meets the user-defined deadline in cloud environments. PCP–ACO is a list scheduling algorithm that combines the PCP heuristic algorithm with the meta-heuristic ACO to achieve faster convergence. The list scheduling algorithm consists of two phases: task ordering and resource selection. In the case of PCP–ACO, the first step involves calculating a topological sort of the workflow tasks to assign priority to each task. Subsequently, the ACO meta-heuristic is employed to allocate the appropriate resource to each task of the workflow, based on their respective sub-deadlines that are computed using the PCP heuristic. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, several experiments were conducted using five real scientific workflows. The results demonstrate that PCP–ACO outperforms the IC-PCP, L-ACO, and HP-GA algorithms in terms of average execution cost, achieving reductions of 19%, 17.3%, and 21.5%, respectively. In recent years, a few studies have been working on the optimization of 3D reinforced concrete structures. The number of research on this subject is increasing day by day. However, in these studies, the real world-structure is generally not used; moreover, only regular structures are used, and RC shear walls do not continue on all floors. Therefore, 3D evaluation of the optimization of real-world RC structures is possible for a small number of building types. There is a need for 3D optimization studies that can be used for all building types. In this study, 3D optimization of a real-world reinforced concrete structure is carried out. The sample structure used in the paper is not only a regular reinforced concrete-framed structure, unlike other studies, but also a RC framed structure with RC shear walls continuing on each floor. In the numerical example, the effect of the RC shear walls continuing on each floor is applied in the analysis, and the design processes of the construction projects on a real-world building and the quantity-cost analysis are made together. All optimization processes are directed automatically using the ACDOS programming, which is developed by the authors. ACDOS can take into account the commercial program named Etabs to make design of construction and the metaheuristic algorithms to reduce the total cost of construction. The results obtained from this study showed that the cost (concrete-rebar-formwork) of the 7-story public dormitory building was reduced by 9.18% when compared with its real-world application. This paper addresses optimization problems subject to an objective function's evaluation‐number constraint arbitrarily given in advance. These problems are practical for black‐box objective functions which cost much money and/or time per evaluation because money and/or time constraints are typically applicable in real‐world projects. This paper suggests a new solution strategy that can be used to adapt metaheuristics to evaluation‐number constraints arbitrarily given in advance. The proposed strategy updates the setting parameters of a target metaheuristic algorithm for every generation by solving a fixed small‐size optimization problem related to the evaluation‐number constraint. It has the advantage of being insensitive to the effects of dimensionality increases in principle. Accurately estimating evaporation is essential for water managers to formulate effective rules and policies. The complexity arising from intricate interactions within the soil-atmosphere system makes evaporation a challenging parameter to predict. In the past decade, Machine Learning techniques rooted in soft computing have emerged as potent tools for addressing the intricacies and non-linearities in hydrology. Surprisingly, there has been no prior research exploring the impact of reservoir water temperature on evaporation modeling. Consequently, this study aimed to employ a hybridized Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) integrated with four optimization algorithms: Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO), and Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA). The focus was on modeling the monthly evaporation of the Boukourdane Dam in Algeria for the period of September 1996 to August 2016 and examining how the reservoir's water temperature influences model performance based on four performance indicators, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), scatter index (SI) and Correlation Coefficient (R). The findings underscored the significance of incorporating the water temperature parameter. Among the models, ANFIS-HHO demonstrated the highest accuracy with MAE, RMSE and R values of 1.28, 1.21 mm and 0.92, respectively during test period. Moreover, results revealing a notable impact of reservoir water temperature on evaporation forecasting and the addition of this parameter provide an increase in R and decrease in RMSE about 4.54% and 17.98% respectively. Substantial deterioration of surface water quality, mainly caused by human activities and climate change, makes the assessment of water quality a global priority. Thus, in this study, four metaheuristic algorithms, namely the particle swarm optimization (PSO), differential evolution (DE), ant colony optimization algorithm (ACOR), and genetic algorithm (GA), were employed to improve the performance of the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in the evaluation of surface water total dissolved solids (TDS). Monthly and annual TDS were considered as target variables in the analysis. In order to evaluate and compare the authenticity of the models, an economic factor (convergence time) and statistical indices of the coefficient of determination (R2), Kling Gupta efficiency (KGE), root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and Nash-Sutcliff efficiency (NSE) were utilized. The results revealed that the hybrid methods used in this study could enhance the classical ANFIS performance in the analysis of the monthly and annual TDS of both stations. For more clarification, the models were ranked using the TOPSIS approach by simultaneously applying the effects of statistical parameters, temporal and spatial change factors, and convergence time. This approach significantly facilitated decision-making in ranking models. The ANFIS-ACOR annual model considering discharge had the best performance in the Vanyar Station; Furthermore, the ANFIS-ACOR monthly model ignoring discharge was outstanding in the Gotvand Station. In total, after utilizing two defined and proposed temporal and spatial change factors, the ANFIS-ACOR and ANFIS-DE hybrid models had the best and worst performance in TDS prediction, respectively. Groundwater resources are required for domestic water supply, agriculture, and industry, and the strategic importance of water resources will only increase in the context of climate change and population growth. For optimal management of this crucial resource, exploration of the potential of groundwater is necessary. To this end, the objective of this study was the development of a new method based on remote sensing, deep neural networks (DNNs), and the optimization algorithms Adam, Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA), Artificial Ecosystem-based Optimization (AEO), Pathfinder Algorithm (PFA), African Vultures Optimization Algorithm (AVOA), and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) to predict groundwater potential in the North Central region of Vietnam. 95 springs or wells with 13 conditioning factors were used as input data to the machine learning model to find the statistical relationships between the presence and nonpresence of groundwater and the conditioning factors. Statistical indices, namely root mean square error (RMSE), area under curve (AUC), accuracy, kappa (K) and coefficient of determination (R2), were used to validate the models. The results indicated that all the proposed models were effective in predicting groundwater potential, with AUC values of more than 0.95. Among the proposed models, the DNN-AVOA model was more effective than the other models, with an AUC value of 0.97 and an RMSE of 0.22. This was followed by DNN-PFA (AUC=0.97, RMSE=0.22), DNN-FPA (AUC=0.97, RMSE=0.24), DNN-AEO (AUC=0.96, RMSE=0.25), DNN-Adam (AUC=0.97, RMSE=0.28), and DNN-WOA (AUC=0.95, RMSE=0.3). In addition, according to the groundwater potential map, about 25–30% of the region was in the high and very high potential groundwater zone; 5–10% was in the moderate zone, and 60–70% was low or very low. In this study, the optimization of the location of oil production and injection wells, the number of production and injection wells, and the economic evaluation in the water injection process has been carried out using three algorithms: PSO, GA, and HGAPSO. Optimizing the oil extraction process by optimizing well locations, the optimal number of production and injection wells, and economic evaluation can improve the performance and efficiency of the process. In this study, the optimization of the water injection process into oil reservoirs using the PSO, GA, and HGAPSO algorithms has been addressed. Additionally, economic evaluation, considering costs and profits from oil production using the best-optimized parameters, has been conducted, and the best Net Present Value (NPV) has been calculated. Initially, the optimal well location problem is modeled, taking into account reservoir characteristics and geological conditions. Using the PSO and GA algorithms, the best well location and number of water injection wells have been obtained, leading to improved efficiency and cost reduction. Then, the GA algorithm is used to combine and modify viewpoints and optimize the number and location of wells. This algorithm explores optimal solutions in the well location space. Economic evaluation is performed using the best-optimized parameters by the algorithms. Costs of water injection, oil production costs, and profits from increased oil production are considered. By calculating the best Net Present Value (NPV), optimal decisions regarding the water injection process and enhancing the performance of oil reservoirs are made. Simulation results indicate that the GA algorithm outperforms other algorithms and can be used as a robust and effective method for optimizing well locations and the number of production and injection wells in the oil injection process. Ultimately, this study assists the oil industry in making better decisions about optimizing water injection and improving the efficiency and profitability of the process using the introduced optimization algorithms. A Kriging-based optimization method is proposed and applied to the design optimization of stacking sequence for quadrilateral laminated composite plates with curved edges. The vibration model for evaluating the fundamental frequency of plates is constructed using the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Then a Kriging surrogate model is used to approximate the vibration model to improve design optimization efficiency. A starting strategy based on the fitting quality coefficient is proposed to determine when to use the expected improvement (EI) infill criterion during the sequential sampling process. Three widely used correlation functions are dynamically selected during the Kriging modeling process to improve the generalization ability of model. In addition, a hybrid whale optimization algorithm (HWOA) is employed to optimize the Kriging hyperparameters, maximize the mean squared error (MMSE), the Expected Improvement (EI) function, and the Kriging predictor. Finally, a comparison is made with the classical DACE toolbox, the optimization procedure using the MMSE criterion and the standard one-shot Kriging-based optimization procedure. Results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method and clearly indicate that the required number of samples for optimization can be effectively reduced when starting to use the EI infill criterion at the fitting quality coefficient larger than 0.85. The most common method for diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies is optical endoscopy. Precancerous lesions account for most of the gastrointestinal neoplasms. Improving patient outcomes depends on technological advancements that enhance the detection and diagnosis of precancerous lesions and early-stage malignancies. Over the last few decades, the field of GI endoscopy has undergone significant, concentrated efforts to create and implement accurate, user-friendly, and minimally invasive optical imaging methods. Presently, there exist number of sophisticated optical techniques available for investigating different aspects of the macroscopic and microscopic interactions between light and tissue. These methods are a useful supplement to white light endoscopy. It is essential to develop a proficient and precise deep learning model, capable of real-time analysis in order to manage unforeseen circumstances among patients. This work proposes a method for classifying abnormalities of the GI tract using optical endoscopy images. The strategy employs a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to achieve dependable and effective outcomes. This research focuses on the categorization of gastric cancer through the utilization of a combined approach using transfer learning and an optimization model referred to as Sand Cat Optimised Gastric Network (SC_Opt_GN). We choose to use two distinct CNN models, namely VGG16 and Xception, for the purpose of feature extraction. We used transfer learning methods before employing them as feature extractors. The sand cat optimization technique was used for feature selection in our study, owing to its inherent adaptability. The selected features from both models were combined using a network aggregator layer inside the feature extractor. Ultimately, the most optimal features were included into the CNN classifiers for the purpose of detection and classification. The accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score of the SC_Opt_GN algorithm were observed to be 98.8%, 97%, 93.4%, and 90%, respectively, when compared to numerous state-of-the-art approaches. This paper studies a two-dimensional two-stage guillotine cutting stock problem which includes determination of how the items should be cut from stock panels in an optimal way, by developing and applying different solution approaches. An integer programming model with new features is proposed. A random key based genetic algorithm is utilized to obtain feasible solutions, and by applying a local search within the algorithm, a hybrid structure is acquired. Besides, a novel two-stage math-heuristic solution method is proposed. In the first stage of this method, a relaxation of the problem is solved; in the second, this solution is improved. The time to obtain the results of the developed two-stage math-heuristic solution approach is significantly lower than the other methods given in the article. Optimal solution values were obtained in 26 of 30 test problems taken from the literature with the proposed mathematical model, in 14 with mathematical programming based heuristic method, and in 16 with a random key based genetic algorithm. Passive parity-time (PT) symmetric metamaterials as a fundamental carrier to investigate non-Hermitian systems have attracted significant interest, but previous studies have rarely focused on the diffraction properties of the PT system, especially the diffraction effect in the metasurfaces with phase gradient modulation. Here, by merging two concepts of phase gradient and PT symmetry together, we design and study a non-Hermitian acoustic gradient metasurface (i.e., metagrating). We show that the PT symmetry breaks spatially the symmetry of reflected wave diffraction in the acoustic metagrating, making it an asymmetric mirror. In particular, at the PT-ensured exceptional point, for incident waves from one side, such metagrating behaves as a phase gradient metasurface, in which high-efficiency retroreflection governed generalized Snell's law occurs. For an incident wave from the opposite direction, such a metagrating is a common grating, whose diffraction in the reflection follows the common diffraction equation. Our work builds a bridge connecting the phase gradient and passive PT symmetric system, enriching the methods for wavefront manipulation and exhibiting potential applications in the design of multifunctional acoustic devices.
