With twelve peanut cultivars grown under artificial water control, the drought resistance related physiological and biochemical traits and the drought resistance mechanism of peanut leaves were studied. Two water treatments were designed, that were 50% and 70% of the soil relative water content of the 0-80 cm soil layer, respectively, at pod-setting stage. The results showed that the twelve peanut cultivars could be grouped into three different resistance levels based on their yield drought resistance coefficient. The A596, Shanhua 11 and Rugaoxiyangsheng were grouped as cultivars with high resistance, while Huayu 20, Nongda 818, Haihua 1, Shanhua 9 and 79266 with moderate resistance, and the ICG6848, Baisha 1016, Hua 17 and Penglaiyiwohou with weak resistance. The mechanism of high drought resistance in peanut cultivars of A596, Shanhua 11 and Rugaoxiyangsheng were due to more powerful antioxidant capacity, higher activity of photosystem II (PS II) and photosynthetic rate (Pn). By contrast, the moderate resistant cultivars Haihua 1 had stronger antioxidant protection capability, and the Shanhua 9 had much higher PS II activity. The Pn, stomatal limitation value (Ls), maximal photochemical efficiency of PS II (Fv/Fm), photochemical quenching coefficient (q(p)), content of malondialdehyde (MDA), relative electric conductivity and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of leaves were very significantly correlated with the drought resistance coefficient. Therefore, they were important indicative traits for the drought resistance at pod-setting stage of peanuts. These traits could be evaluated under normal irrigation condition except that the SOD activity should be identified under drought stress. Based on this study, we proposed that Shanhua 11 and 79266 could serve as standard cultivars of high drought resistance and weak drought resistance, respectively. Shanhua 11 could also serve as a standard cultivar for identification of leaf drought resistance traits in peanut.

To investigate the effect of humidity and ammonia on the antioxidative capacities and meat qualities of broilers, 192 broilers were divided into 2 groups: high (H, 70 ppm) and low (L, 30 ppm) ammonia concentration. These groups were divided into 30% (Treatment humidity, T) and 60% (Control humidity, C) humidity, giving 4 treatments: C+L, C+H, T+L, and T+H. Blood and muscle antioxidative capacities and meat quality were measured. In the H group, body weight (BW), average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily weight gain (ADG), blood and muscle antioxidative capacities, and postmortem pectoral muscle a* of broilers were significantly decreased (P < 0.05), and pectoral muscle thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) contents and drip losses, postmortem pectoral muscle b* (P < 0.05) and L* (P = 0.054), and pectoral muscle shear forces (P = 0.075) increased. In the T condition, BW, ADFI, pectoral muscle superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities, and pectoral muscle L* decreased (P = 0.053), and pectoral muscle shear forces and TBARS contents increased (P < 0.05). In the T+H group, BW, ADFI, ADG, blood antioxidative capacities, pectoral muscle SOD and GSH-Px activities, and postmortem pectoral muscle a* were significantly lower than those of the C+L group, but postmortem pectoral muscle TBARS contents and pectoral muscle drip losses and shear forces significantly increased (P < 0.05). These results revealed that T+H could significantly reduce growth performance, antioxidative capacities, and meat quality of broilers; T intensified these negative effects.

In order to discover the mechanism of Xuebijing oral effervescent tablet (XBJOET) to treat infectious diseases, the effect of XBJOET on endotoxin induced rabbit fever and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) was investigated. Auricle microcirculation in rabbit was detected by laser speckle blood perfusion imager system; coagulation function was measured by coagulation analyzer, fibrinolytic system was quantified by Elisa assay and micro thrombosis in tissues was observed with HE staining under light microscope. The results demonstrated that the body temperature of rabbit decreased significantly at 1-3 h after administration with 4.8, 2.4 and 1.2 g x kg(-1) XBJOET to endotoxin induced DIC rabbit model, the auricle microcirculation blood flow in model group (54.45 +/- 14.53) PU was lower than that in control group (77.18 +/- 12.32) PU. The auricle microcirculation blood flow increased markedly and there was significant difference between model group and 1.2 g x kg(-1) XBJOET group. There was significant difference between model group and control group in the content of PAI1 and FIB. The PAI1 levels in model and control groups were (30.48 +/- 2.46) ng x mL(-1) and (20.93 +/- 3.25) ng x mL(-1), respectively. The FIB levels in model and control group were (3.34 +/- 1.09) g x L(-1) and (4.84 +/- 1.10) g x L(-1), respectively. The content of PAI1 in rabbit plasma decreased notably, there were significant differences between model group and 4.8, 2.4 g x kg(-1) XBJOET groups. On the contrary the content of FIB increased. XBJOET possessed pharmacological activities of curing infectious fever and DIC, the mechanism of which is related to amelioration of microcirculation disturbance, inhibition of fibrinolytic system activation and coagulation and micro thrombosis elimination.

One of the critical enzymes involved in vitamin E biosynthesis in plants is 2-methyl-6-phytyl-1,4-benzoquinol methyltransferase (MPBQ MT). The full-length VTE3 cDNA (designated rVTE3-1 and -2) encoding MPBQ MT and the full-length DNA of VTE3 (designated gVTE3-1 and -2) were isolated from cultivated peanuts (Arachis hypogaea). The full-length DNA of VTE3 (designated gVTE3-A and -B) was isolated from the wild groundnut species A. duranensis (A-genome) and A. ipaënsis (B-genome), and polymorphism analysis of VTE3 was performed. The results demonstrated that rVTE3-1 and -2 both have a DNA sequence that is 1059 bp long and encodes 351 amino acids; the homology of the 2 amino acid sequences was 98.6%. The gVTE3-1 of cultivated Fenghua 2 peanut samples was 2710 bp long, with 3 introns located at 44-163, 772-1295, and 1603-2437 bp, and the Fenghua 2 gVTE3-2 was 2706 bp long, with 3 introns located at 44-169, 778-1291, and 1599-2433 bp. The homology for gVTE3-1 and -2 across 13 cultivated peanut samples was 99.9 and 100%, respectively. gVTE3-1 and -2 were from A- and B-genome, respectively, with 96.6% homology between the 2 sequences. The present study demonstrated that abundant polymorphisms were present in the VTE3 genes from different genomes. Additionally, polymorphisms were observed in the gVTE3-1 alleles of the 13 cultivars and wild A. duranensis species but not in the gVTE3-2 alleles of the 13 cultivars and wild A. ipaënsis species.

Four new cyclohexanone derivatives (2-5) and one known analog, (-)-Palitantin (1) were isolated from the EtOAc extract of Penicillium commune, a fungal strain of low-temperature habitats. The structures of 2-5 were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. Furthermore, the absolute configuration of 2 was assigned by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations, whereas that 3-5 were deduced via the CD data. This study is to investigate the treatment of Jin Chai antiviral capsule for influenza virus FM1/47 (H1N1) infection. The model of pneumonia was established by dropping influenza virus into the nose of normal mice, real-time PCR and Western blot technique were used to detect the virus load and the interferoninducible transmembrane protein3 (IFITM3) in lung of mice at the 1st day, 3rd day, 5th day and 7th day after affected. The results showed that Jin Chai antiviral capsule in large, middle, small dose groups can decrease virus load significantly at each time point, after being affected (P<0.05, P<0.01), Jin Chai antiviral capsule can increase the interferoninducible transmembrane protein3 in lung of mice, large dose groups are significantly higher in expression of IFITM3 compared with model group at each time point (P<0.05, P<0.01). Middle dose groups are significantly higher in expression of IFITM3 compared with model group at the 3th day and the 5th day (P<0.05), small dose groups are significantly higher in expression of IFITM3 compared with model group at the 3th day (P<0.05). It can be concluded that Jin Chai antiviral capsule exerts antiviral effects against influenzavirus by raised expression of IFITM3.

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(10)H(8)N(2)·2C(8)H(8)O(3), contains two 2-meth-oxy-benzoic acid mol-ecules and one 4,4'-bipyridine mol-ecule. The 4,4'-bipyridine mol-ecule is disordered over two positions in a 1:1 ratio. In the crystal, the 2-meth-oxy-benzoic acid and 4,4'-bipyridine mol-ecules are connected by inter-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds. The dihedral angle between the carboxy group and its attached ring is 26.823 (2)°.

We demonstrate highly efficient pulse stretching in Er(3+)-doped femtosecond mode-locked fiber lasers by tailoring cavity dispersion using an intracavity short-pass edge filter. The cavity dispersion is preset at around zero to obtain the shortest pulsewidth. When the cutoff wavelength of the short-pass edge filter is thermo-optically tuned to overlap the constituting spectral components of mode-locked pulses, large negative waveguide dispersion is introduced by the steep cutoff slope and the total cavity dispersion is moved to normal dispersion regime to broaden the pulsewidth. The time-bandwidth product of the mode-locked pulse increases with the decreasing temperature at the optical liquid surrounding the short-pass edge filter. This study is to investigate the treatment of YinQiaojiedu soft capsule for influenza virus A/PR8/34 (H1N1) infection. The model of pneumonia was established by dropping influenza virus into the nose of normal mice, and the lung index and death rate were observed. Real time RT-PCR and Western blotting technique were used to detect the virus load and the relative expression of M1 protein in lungs of mice on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th day after infection. The results showed that YinQiaojiedu soft capsule in 1 g x kg(-1) and 0.5 g x kg(-1) dose groups can decrease the lung index significantly on the 3rd, 5th and 7th day after being infected (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), and the number of death in the two groups of animals decreased significantly. YinQiaojiedu soft capsule in 1 g x kg(-1) dose group can decreased virus load at each time point, and lower it in 0.5 g x kg(-1) dose group at the 3rd, 5th and 7th day (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). YinQiaojiedu soft capsule can decrease the relative expression of M1 protein in lungs of mice, 1 g x kg(-1) and 0.5 g x kg(-1) dose groups are significantly lower in expression of M1 protein compared with model group at the 3rd and 7th day (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). It can be concluded that YinQiaojiedu soft capsule exerts antiviral effects against influenza virus by downregulating expression of virus load and M1 protein.

Objective: To investigate the changes of respiratory function of liver mitochondria in rabbits induced by the general anesthetic propofol., Methods: Eighteen New Zealand rabbits weighted 1.5-2.5 kg were randomly divided into three groups: control group, emulsion group and propofol group. The control group received continuous infusion of 0.9% sodium chloride solution. The propofol group received continuous infusion of 1% propofol. The emulsion group received continuous infusion of 10% emulsion. The liver mitochondri of the rabbits were isolated. The carnitine acyl transferase (CPT) activity, H+ -ATPase hydrolysis activity and the content of ATP in the mitochondria were analysed., Results: The rabbits in the propofol group had lower activity of CPT than the controls (P < 0.05), while no difference was found between the control group and the emulsion group (P > 0.05). The rabbits in the propofol group had higher H+ -ATPase hydrolysis activity than the controls (P < 0.05), while no difference was found between the control group and the emulsion group (P > 0.05). No significant differences were found in the content of ATP in mitochondria between the three groups (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: Propofol inhibits CPT activity, which disturbs fatty acid beta-oxidation. Emulsion acted as vehicle of propofol seems to have no significant impact on mitochondria respiratory function.

Taking the 6-year-old peach "Shuguang" as test object, this paper studied the effects of short-term heating at 40 degrees C, 45 degrees C, and 50 degrees C on the bud livability, bud burst, reactive oxygen content, and activities of related enzymes in peach bud, aimed to investigate the regulation effect of short-term heating on the endodormancy release of peach bud. The results indicated that the effects of short-tern heating on the endodormancy release of peach bud were advanced by the postponement of treatment date, the increase of treatment temperature, and the prolonging of treatment time. On November 30, the regulation effect of heating at 40 degrees C was negative. Comparing with those under no-heating (CK), the date of endodormancy release was postponed, the bud burst, the O2-* and * OH production rates, the H2O2 content, and the activities of CAT and POD were lowered, and the SOD activity was improved. It was adverse under heating at 45 degrees C and 50 degrees C. On December 10, heating at 40 degrees C nearly had no obvious effect on the endodormancy release, while heating at 45 degrees C and 50 degrees C had the same effect as that on November 30, with the former being more superior to the latter. Correlation analysis indicated that the rapid increase of reactive oxygen might be the critical reason for the endodormancy release of peach bud.

The research investigated the effect of Patrinia heterophylla Bunge (Valerianaceae) polysaccharides (PHB-P1) on U14-bearing mice. The tumor weight of mice treated with PHB-P1 (30, 60 mg/kg body weight) was significantly lower than that of the control group, a decrease of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was observed, and the serum alkaline phosphatase (AKP) level was increased slightly. The number of apoptotic tumor cells was significantly increased in the mice by treatment of PHB-P1 (30, 60 mg/kgbw). Cell cycle analysis showed the accumulation of tumor cells in the G2/M phase and a relative decrease of the S phase. By the immunohistochemical analysis, PHB-P1 (30, 60 mg/kgbw) might up-regulate the expression of p53 and Bax, and significantly inhibited the expression of Bcl-2 in tumor tissues. In conclusion, PHB-P1 could inhibit tumor growth and induce tumor cell apoptosis.

Jinding laying ducks (n = 648) were subjected to one of six dietary treatments (0, 1, 5, 25, 50, or 100 mg of melamine/kg of diet) to investigate the toxicity of melamine and determine the melamine residue in eggs. Ducks were fed melamine-supplemented diets for 21 days followed by a 21 day withdrawal period. Dietary melamine had no adverse effects on laying performance. Renal lesions were correlated with increasing levels of dietary melamine. Melamine residue in eggs increased with dietary melamine during the first 21 days and reached the maximum content (1.35 mg/kg) in the 100 mg of melamine/kg of diet group. Melamine residue in eggs decreased rapidly during the withdrawal period. The depletion time for egg melamine residue increased with dietary melamine level. These results indicated that a dietary level of > or = 50 mg of melamine/kg of feed induces obvious renal injury. The residue level and withdrawal time for melamine clearance in eggs correlated with the dietary melamine level.

It is to investigate the effect of two kinds of Houttuynia Cordata Injection on preventing and treating H1N1 influenza virus infection in mice. Pneumonia model was set up by intranasal infection of the normal and immunocompromised mice with influenza virus FM1 and PR8. The two injections were administered before and after the administration of virus, separately, and the lung index was observed. The results showed that the two preparations have obvious therapeutic effect on normal mice infected with influenza virus FM1 and PR8. And to FM1, the new injection's effect is better at small dosage. The results also showed that the two preparations have obvious prophylactic effect on immunodepressed mice infected with influenza virus FM1 and PR8. And to PR8, the old injection's effect is better at small dosage. Houttuynia Cordata Injection can improve the mice pneumonia caused by influenza virus H1N1 and decrease the lung index markedly. It has a remarkable preventive and therapeutic effect on H1N1 influenza virus in mice.

To investigate the effects of shading and light recovery on the photosynthetic characteristics of peanut seedlings leaves, different shading treatments including no shading, 27% shading, 43% shading, and 77% shading were performed with black sunshade net at the seedling stage of two peanut cultivars Fenghua 1 and Fenghua 2, with related parameters determined. It was shown that with the increase of shading degree, the leaf chlorophyll content, actual PSII photochemical efficiency under irradiance (phi(PS II)), and maximum PS II photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) of test cultivars increased, while the Chl a/b ratio and photosynthetic rate (Pn) decreased. On the first day after light recovery, the Pn and stomatal conductance (Gs) decreased while the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) increased with increasing shading degree when measured under high light, but the Pn increased and the Gs and Ci decreased with increasing shading degree when measured under low light. The ratio of Pn measured under low light to that measured under high light increased significantly. With increasing shading degree, the light compensation point, light saturation point, CO2 compensation point, CO2 saturation point, and carboxylation efficiency decreased, while the apparent quantum yield increased. After the removal of shading, the Pn, phi(PS II), and Fv/Fm under natural light decreased immediately, but increased gradually 3-5 days after. 15 days after light recovery, the Pn, phi(PS II) and Fv/Fm in treatment 27% shading recovered to the level of no shading. As for the other treatments, the restored extent differed with shading degree and test variety. In the same treatments, the leaf chlorophyll content, Pn and phi(PS II) of Fenghua 1 were higher than those of Fenghua 2. The results demonstrated that shading at seedling stage improved the capabilities of test varieties in using low light, but reduced the capabilities in using high light.

This experiment was undertaken to evaluate the effect of dietary vitamin E on growth performance and immune response of broilers under heat stress (HS). Birds raised in either a thermoneutral (23.9 degrees C constant) or HS (23.9 to 38 degrees C cycling) environment were fed a corn-soybean meal basal diet supplemented with vitamin E at 0, 100, or 200 mg/kg, respectively. Two hundred forty 1-d-old male broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 6 groups; each group had 4 replicates of 10 birds. Humoral immunity was assessed by i.v. injection of 7% SRBC followed by evaluation of serum for antibody titers in primary and secondary responses. Cell-mediated immunity was assessed by using a Sephadex stimulation method to recruit abdominal exudate cells (AEC) to evaluate macrophage phagocytic ability. Body weight and feed intake were not significantly influenced by dietary vitamin E (P>0.05), whereas feed conversion was significantly affected by vitamin E at 100 mg/kg (P<0.05). Heat stress significantly reduced BW, feed intake, and feed conversion (P<0.05). Numbers of AEC, percentage of macrophages in AEC, phagocytic macrophages, and internalized opsonized and unopsonized SRBC were increased by dietary vitamin E (P<0.05). Both primary and secondary antibody responses were significantly increased by dietary vitamin E when birds were exposed to HS (P<0.05). Lymphoid organ weights, antibody responses, incidence of macrophages in AEC, and phagocytic ability of macrophages were all significantly reduced under HS. These results indicated that HS severely reduced growth performance and immune response of broilers, whereas the immune response of broilers could be improved by dietary vitamin E supplementation under HS.

This experiment was undertaken to evaluate the effect of dietary vitamin A on the performance and immune competence of broilers under heat stress (HS). A total of 180 birds, at 22 days of age, were randomly assigned to be reared either at 24°C (thermoneutral, TN, 24°C, constant) or 24°C to 38°C (heat stress, HS, cycling) until the age of 42 days. Birds were then supplemented with vitamin A at 750, 1500, 15 000 IU/kg. Each of the 2 × 3 factorially arranged treatments were replicated in six cages, each containing five birds. Humoral immunity was assessed by intravenous injection of 7% sheep red blood cells (SRBC) followed by evaluation of serum for antibody titers in primary and secondary responses. Cell-mediated immunity was assessed by using a Sephadax stimulation method to recruit abdominal exudate cells (AEC) to evaluate macrophage phagocytic ability. Body weight (BW) and feed conversion were significantly affected by dietary vitamin A (P < 0.05). HS significantly reduced BW, feed intake and feed conversion (P < 0.05). Numbers of AEC, percentage of macrophages in AEC, phagocytic macrophages, internalized opsonized and unopsonized SRBC were increased by dietary vitamin A (P < 0.05). Both primary and secondary antibody responses were characterized by increasing titers of antibody to SRBC by dietary vitamin A when birds were exposed to HS (P < 0.05). Lymphoid organ weights, antibody responses, incidence of macrophages in AEC and phagocytic ability of macrophages were all significantly reduced under HS. These results indicated that HS severely reduced performance and immunocompetence of broilers, whereas the immune response of broilers improved by dietary vitamin A supplementation under HS.

The Schiff base, C(16)H(12)N(2)S(2), has been synthesized by refluxing an ethano-lic solution of thio-phene-2-carbaldehyde and benzene-1,4-diamine. The center of the benzene ring is located on a crystallographic center of inversion. The dihedral angle between the benzene and thio-phene rings is 63.6 (1)°.

Objective: To investigate the change of energy metabolism in isolated rat liver mitochondria by the general anesthetic etomidate., Methods: Nine healthy male SD rats weighted 230-280 g were used to isolate liver mitochondria. According to randomized block design, the isolated liver mitochondria wered divided into three groups: control group, 0.4 microg/mL etomidate group, and 4 microg/mL etomidate group. Then the samples were incubated at 37 degrees C for 7 min. The fluorescence intensities of lipophilic cation Rhodamine-123 and forward light scatter (FSC) were analyzed by flow cytometry. The size of the adenine nucleotides (AMP, ADP, ATP) in mitochondria was measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The energy charge (EC) = (ATP + 0.5ADP)/(ATP + ADP + AMP). The inorganic phosphorus method was used to measure the H(+)-ATPase hydrolytic activity and the oligomycin-sensitive H(+)-ATPase activity. The enzyme activity was express as nmol Pi/(mg pro x min)., Results: The fluorescence intensities level of Rhodamine-123 in the 0.4 microg/mL etomidate group was higher than in the control group, but still lower than in the 4 microg/mL etomidate group (P<0.05). The size of FSC had no significant change in the 0.4 microg/mL etomidate group, whereas the 4 microg/mL etomidate group had increased size of FSC (P<0.05). Compared to the control group, no significant changes of content of adenine nucleotides, energy charge and hydrolytic activity of H(+)-ATPase were found in the 0.4 microg/mL etomidate group. However, the intra-mitochondrial ADP, ATP and energy charge levels decreased and the AMP increased in the 0.4 microg/mL etomidate group (P<0.05). The hydrolytic activity of H(+)-ATPase increased in the 4 microg/mL etomidate group (P<0.01), but it was not influenced by oligomycin (P>0.05)., Conclusions: Etomidate at 0.4 microg/mL has no significant effect on isolated rat liver mitochonddia, but at 4 microg/mL it can lead to distruption of mitochondrial energy metabolism.

Alphamethylepoxide (16alpha-methyl-Delta1,4-pregnadiene-9beta-11beta-oxide-17alpha,21-diol-3,20-dione) is a key intermediate for the synthesis of various active pharmaceutical ingredients of steroid compounds. A stability-indicating reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) method for the assay of alphamethylepoxide and estimation of its related compounds has been developed and validated. It can accurately quantitate alphamethylepoxide in the presence of numerous structurally related compounds (including the beta-epimer, known as betamethylepoxide). This method can also adequately separate most of the impurities from each other and estimate their quantities in alphamethylepoxide samples. The stability-indicating capability of this method has been demonstrated by adequate separation of the degradation products from alphamethylepoxide in stress degraded and aged stability samples. A 15 cmx4.6 mm i.d. ACE C18 HPLC column is the primary column used in this method, and a 15 cmx4.6 mm i.d. A Develosil ODS UG column serves as the alternative column. The mobile phase consisted of 10 mM sodium sulfate, 0.05% (v/v) phosphoric acid, and acetonitrile. This method can accurately assay the content of alphamethylepoxide (in a given lot) with a % relative standard deviation of less than one. It can also estimate individual impurities down to 0.05% level compared with the alphamethylepoxide peak in the sample.

Objective: To investigate the clinical manifestation, diagnosis, treatment of parathyroid occupying lesions., Methods: The clinical data of 42 patients with parathyroid occupying lesions were retrospectively analyzed, including the clinical symptoms and signs, laboratory results, pathologic and imaging results and treatment., Results: The number of males and females were 8 and 34, with females: males ratio being 1:5.25. The median age was 39 years. There were 2 cases of parathyroid cancer, 29 cases of parathyroid adenoma, 11 cases of parathyroid cysts in this study. The symptoms were as follows: 40 cases of neck lump, 34 cases of osteoporosis/osteitis fibrosa cystica, 29 cases of urinary symptom, 7 cases of voice hoarseness, 4 cases of peptic ulcer, 3 cases of dyspnoea and dysphagia, 3 cases of thoracic cavity lump, 2 cases of enhanced amylase activity. Serum calcium ion level and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) level were examined qualitatively before operation. Ultrasonography, ECT-99mTc-MIBI, CT, MRI were used in diagnosing and locating parathyroid occupying lesions before operation. Twenty nine cases of parathyroid adenoma were treated with operation, 28 patients achieved complete remission, 1 suffered relapse after 23 months postoperative follow up. Eleven cases of parathyroid cysts were treated with operation and the outcome was no recurrence. Two cases of parathyroid cancer survived with out recurrence during follow up for 28 months and 50 months after operation., Conclusions: Examination of serum calcium and PTH level together with ultrasonography, ECT-99mTc-MIBI, CT, MRI is helpful to diagnose parathyroid occupying lesions. Surgery should be done as primary treatment. Tumor resection can be performed for parathyroid cysts, intraoperative exploration of bilateral neck is indicated for parathyroid adenoma, and a radical resection should be performed primarily for the parathyroid cancer.

Background: Pneumonia has become the predominant cause of death for the elderly. It is critical to determine the status of oropharyngeal pathogen colonization in the elderly when treating pneumonia. To explore the efficient approaches to treat age-related pneumonia, we determined the status of oropharyngeal pathogenic colonization in the elderly community., Methods: Throat swab cultures were used to isolate oropharyngeal pathogens from 706 residents older than 65 years living in the community of Shenyang City. Characteristics of bacterial strains were sorted and identified using drug sensitivity tests., Results: Results of bacterial identification showed that 265 out of 706 samples were positive, thereby exhibiting a 37.5% positive rate. There were 290 bacterial strains isolated from the elderly community in total, of which 248 strains were gram-negative bacilli (GNB) and 42 strains were gram-positive cocci (GNC), accounting for 85.5% and 14.5%, respectively. There were 158 Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, representing 54.4% of the all GNB., Conclusion: The rate of oropharyngeal GNB colonization in the elderly community increases and Klebsiella pneumoniae is the most common strain.

The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of Patrinia scabra Bunge polysaccharide (PSB-P2) on cervical cancer cell (U14)-bearing mice. The tumor weight of mice treated with PSB-P2 (40, 80 mg/kg b.w.) was significantly lower than that of the control group and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was decreased, while serum alkaline phosphatase (AKP) level was only changed slightly. Meanwhile, the number of apoptotic tumor cells was significantly increased in the mice by the treatment of PSB-P2 (40, 80 mg/kg b.w.). At the same time, cell cycle analysis showed the accumulation of tumor cells in the G0/G1 phase and a relative decrease in the S phase. On the other hand, using the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay, PSB-P2 (40, 80 mg/kg b.w.) showed the up-regulation of p53 and Bax, and significant inhibition of Bcl-2 in tumor tissues. It suggests a possible mechanism of the inhibitory effect of PSB-P2 on tumor growth.

Taking two-year-old peach tree of cv 'Chunjie' as test material, the natural inducing factors of peach bud dormancy and the roles of Ca2+ in the dormancy induction were studied. The results revealed that peach plant was very sensitive to short sunlight and/or natural low temperature. These two factors could induce growth cessation, dormancy, and freezing-resistance development, but their action mechanisms differed with each other. Short sunlight induced the dormancy first and the freezing-resistance then, whereas natural low temperature was in adverse. In case of the cofunction of short sunlight and low temperature, i.e., under the natural condition, short sunlight was the main factor inducing growth cessation, dormancy, and freezing-resistance development, while natural low temperature was the secondary one. The inducement effect of short sunlight was closely related to the actions of Ca2+, because Ca2+ played a messenger role in the signal transduction of short sunlight. In the experiment of supplemental light, it was found that with the decrease of temperature, the Ca2+ had an increasing influx from the vacuole, intercellular space, and cell wall to the cytosol and nuclei. At the same time, plant growth slowed down and finally ceased, dormancy started then, and freezing-resistance developed, which indicated that as a messenger in the signal transduction of natural low temperature, Ca2+ played an important role in the inducement of growth cessation, dormancy, and freezing-resistance development by natural low temperature.

A series of 4-(6-(3-nitroguanidino)hexanamido)pyrrolidine derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their abilities to inhibit inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) isoform. All target compounds were prepared in 11 steps from commercially trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline. The preliminary pharmacological test showed that three compounds, 17, 21, and 30, have the good potency (IC(50)=2.36, 2.68, 2.5 microM, respectively) which are compared to the NOS inhibitor N(G)-nitroarginine(L-NNA) (IC(50)=14.74 microM), and could be used as lead compounds for exploring new iNOS inhibitors in the future.

Gentiopicrin contents in different organs, habitats and harvest time of Gentiana straminea cultivated at Gansu were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that the gentiopicrin contents in the plants growing for three years were slightly higher than those of two years, but the difference was not significant (P > 0.05). The average gentiopicrin contents in roots, stems and leaves were 13.30%, 2.95% and 2.24% respectively. Within the same growing year, gentiopicrin contents were decreased in stems and leaves but increased in roots with the harvest delay. The gentiopicrin contents also varied with lower to high altilude were 10.23%, 13.12% and 15.54% in Longxi, Kangle and Lintan county respectively. All these results indicated that the gentiopicrin contents in roots, stems and leaves of cultivated G. straminea were all conformable to the Codex criterion (2%). Considering both gentiopicrin yield and production cost, the biennial roots should be taken and harvested after October before soil frozen. However, the harvest should be predated by the end of August or the beginning of September only for stems and leaves. It is benefit for gentiopicrin accumulation in G. straminea when cultivated in high-altitude areas.

In this paper, we describe a strategy that can be used to efficiently develop a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation of challenging pharmaceutical molecules. This strategy involves use of advanced chromatographic technologies, such as a computer-assisted chromatographic method development tool (ChromSword) and an automated column switching system (LC Spiderling). This process significantly enhances the probability of achieving adequate separations and can be a large time saver for bench analytical scientists. In our study, the ChromSword was used for mobile phase screening and separation optimization, and the LC Spiderling was used to identify the most appropriate HPLC columns. For proof of concept, the analytes employed in this study are the structural epimers betamethylepoxide and alphamethylepoxide (also known as 16-beta methyl epoxide and 16-alpha methyl epoxide). Both of these compounds are used in the synthesis of various active pharmaceutical ingredients that are part of the steroid pharmaceutical products. While these molecules are relatively large in size and contain various polar functional groups and non-polar cyclic carbon chains, their structures differ only in the orientation of one methyl group. To our knowledge, there is no reported HPLC separation of these two molecules. A simple gradient method was quickly developed on a 5 cm YMC Hydrosphere C(18) column that separated betamethylepoxide and alphamethylepoxide in 10 min with a resolution factor of 3.0. This high resolution provided a true baseline separation even when the concentration ratio between these two epimers was 10,000:1. Although outside of the scope of this paper, stability-indicating assay and impurity profile methods for betamethylepoxide and for alphamethylepoxide have also been developed by our group based on a similar method development strategy.

The study was undertaken to assess dietary CP and ME concentrations for optimum growth performance and carcass characteristics of goslings. In a 5 x 3 factorial arrangement, 360 one-day-old commercial generation Huoyan goslings were randomly assigned to experimental diets with 10.87, 11.37, 11.87, 12.37, and 12.87 MJ of ME/kg of diet; each contained 15.0, 17.5, and 20.0% CP, respectively, from 0 to 4 wk of age (WOA). Each dietary treatment was replicated 6 times. Body weight and feed consumption were measured, and carcass characteristics were evaluated at 4 WOA. The result showed that birds on a diet with 11.87, 12.37, and 12.87 MJ of ME/kg at 0 to 4 WOA exhibited greater BW gain than those on a diet with 10.87 and 11.37 MJ of ME/kg (P < 0.01), though BW gain was not different among 11.87, 12.37, and 12.87 MJ of ME/kg of diet. Mean BW gain of birds fed 17.5 and 20.0% CP diets was not different (P > 0.05), but they were higher than those on 15.0% dietary CP concentration (P < 0.001). Feed intake was not influenced by dietary ME levels (P > 0.05). Feed intake of birds fed 17.5 and 20.0% CP diets was higher than those of birds on 15.0% CP diets (P < 0.01). Feed conversion ratios of birds fed on 11.87, 12.37, and 12.87 MJ of ME/kg of diet were better than those fed on 10.87 and 11.37 MJ of ME/kg (P < 0.001). Feed conversion ratios of birds fed on 17.5 and 20.0% CP diets were better than those fed on 15.0% CP diets. Moreover, there were no significant interactions between CP and ME on growth performance. There was a direct relationship between dietary ME levels and eviscerated carcass percentage, abdominal fat percentage, and liver relative weight (P < 0.01). Breast and leg meat percentage were influenced by dietary CP concentrations significantly (P < 0.001). Thus, diets with 11.87 MJ of ME/kg and 17.5 to 20.0% CP were used more efficiently from 0 to 4 WOA by Huoyan goslings.

Spatial variability and distribution of soil arsenic in Zibo maize producing area, Shandong Province were studied using geostatistics and geographic information system (GIS) techniques. Positive skewed distribution was observed; Logarithm transformation was applied in order to achieve normality in the data set and to reduce the affect of outliers. The results show that experimental semi-variogram exists distinct anisotropic and has the strongest continuity in the direction of northeastern 70 degrees. Exponential model was used to fit experimental semi-variogram. Normal kriging was used to predict the spatial distribution of soil arsenic in Zibo maize producing area. It can be concluded that there is clear special heterogeneity in soil arsenic and wastewater irrigation is the main reason affected spatial variability. In fact, the concentrations of soil arsenic in Zibo maize producing area decrease in the pass 20 years.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cabbage (aerial part), air (gas and particles) and soil samples collected from two sites in Tianjin, China were measured. Although the levels of PAHs in all samples from the heavily contaminated site B were higher than those from the less contaminated site A, the PAH profiles were similar, suggesting the similarity in source type. PAH concentrations in cabbages were positively correlated to either gas or particle-bound PAHs in air. A multivariate linear regression with cabbage PAH as a function of both gas and particle-bound PAHs in air was established to quantitatively characterize the relationship between them. Inclusion of soil PAH concentrations would not improve the model, indicating that the contribution of soil PAHs to cabbage (aerial part) accumulation was insignificant.

Objective: To observe the anti-liver-fibrosis effect of Guzhang Tablet (GZT) and to explore its mechanism., Methods: Fifty female rats, weighing 200-220 g were randomly divided into the blank control group, the model group, the small dosage GZT group, the large dosage GZT group and the Biejiajian Pill (BJJP) group, 10 rats in each group. The changes of related serum enzymes, liver-fibrosis marker, oxygen free radical and liver tissue pathology were observed after 8 weeks of treatment., Results: (1) Compared with the model group, the serum levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), glutamyltranspetidase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (AKP) were improved in the GZT groups, better effect was got in the large dosage GZT group. (2) Compared with the blank control group, GZT showed no effect on serum total protein (TP) but with raising albumin (ALB) effect. (3) Compared with blank control group, the levels of hyaluronidase (HA), laminin (LN), collagen type IV (IV-C) and procollagen type III (PC III) in both GZT groups were lower, especially in the large dosage GZT group. (4) Small and large dosage of GZT showed effect in reducing malonyldialdehyde (MDA), Glutathione-peroxidose(GSH-Px) and nitric oxide (NO) content, but the effect on increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) similar to that of BJJP with no significant different. (5) GZT, both small and large dosage, had obvious anti-liver fibrosis action, which was superior to that of BJJP., Conclusion: In the genetic and developing processes of liver fibrosis in rats, GZT could protect the liver cells, inhibit the synthesis and reduce the content of collagens, the mechanism might be related with its action in antagonizing peroxidation injury, indicating that GZT could effectively prevent liver fibrosis formation.

Aim: To study the effect of nimodipine (Nim) on ischemic cerebral damage., Methods: The four-vessel occlusion method was performed on rats. Monoamines were measured by fluorospectrophotometry., Results: Intraperitoneal injection of Nim 0.75 and 1.5 mg.kg-1 quickened the recovery of EEG changes to 19 +/- 3 and 17 +/- 4 min (P < 0.01), respectively. Nim reduced the decreases of monoamines (NE, DA, 5-HT, and 5-HIAA) contents after 30-min cerebral ischemia and 1-h reperfusion., Conclusion: Nim protects the brain from ischemic damage.

Conservative operation and postoperative chemotherapy were given to 15 patients with malignant germ cell tumors of the ovary with the preservation of fertility and ovarian functions. Four patients, one with endodermal sinus tumor and three immature teratoma, had full term deliveries after the operation. The possibility was discussed to preserve young women's fertility and ovarian function in treating their malignant germ cell tumors.

Sanitary standard of aluminium in drinking water is not formulated in China. In this paper safe maximal dose of aluminium in drinking water was studied, using acute and chronic toxicological experiments, cytogenetic toxicological assays and sensation threshold tests of AlCl3 and Al3(SO4)3. Considering with available epidemiological information, a preliminary sanitary standard of aluminium in drinking water 0.2 mg/L is recommended.

Limax is a mollusk with lung, the whole body of which has manifested medicinal values. It can be taken orally and used externally. The experimental studies on the antitumor effect of Limax on NIH mice bearing ARS (ascites type) or Lewis lung carcinoma were carried out by using tumor inhibitory rate, tumor mean diameter doubling time, tumor growth delay time or the host existence time as the experimental indexes. The initial results indicated that the mixed suspension liquid of Limax had an obviously inhibitory effect upon the above mentioned experiment tumors.

Both harringtonine (Harr) and Ara-C are effective for treatment of ANLL. Since it was suggested that Harr could induce leukemic cells to differentiate and Ara-C might be a weak inducer of leukemic cell differentiation, we investigated the effect of Harr in combination with Ara-C on inducing differentiation of leukemic cells. Ten patients with ANLL were treated with low dose Harr in combination with low dose Ara-C. Complete remission was achieved in 8 of the 10 patients. After therapy, severe pancytopenia and moderate myelosuppression occurred in two patients who achieved remission. Four patients demonstrated a decrease in blast cells with an associated transient increase in mature granulocytes during therapy. Auer bodies appeared in 7-8% mature granulocytes in peripheral blood and in bone marrow on the 14th day of combination therapy in one patient. Freshly isolated leukemic cells from six pretreatment patients were cultured in liquid in the presence of Harr in combination with Ara-C. Apparent evidence of differentiation of leukemic cells and Auer bodies in the cytoplasm of mature granulocytic cells were observed in two of the six patients. The above results seem to suggest that the therapeutic effect of low dose Harr plus low dose Ara-C may result from both differentiation induction and cytotoxicity of the leukemic cells.

Nine daily intravenous (iv) injections of RA-700 (an antitumor cyclic hexapeptide) at doses of 2 to 6 mg/kg/day caused increases of WBC counts at 4-6 days after treatment in normal C57BL/6 X DBA/2 (BDF1) mice. The percentages of neutrophils and lymphocytes were modified. There was a decrease of colony-forming units in culture (CFUc) in bone marrow to 40% of the control value on day 1 but CFUc rapidly returned to normal values on day 3. The colony-forming units in spleen (CFUs) in bone marrow decreased during treatment. On the other hand, CFUc and CFUs in spleen were increased from the initiation of treatment to the time prior to the increase of WBC count. Spleen weight increased after treatment, and histologically, increases of immature and also mature granulocytes and megakaryocytes were observed. However, RA-700 did not stimulate the progress of hematoprogenitors in vitro. The results indicated that RA-700 stimulates the progress of hematoprogenitors in the spleen, but this effect is probably indirect.
