The process of separation of special forces (military special operations units) in the structure of the armed forces of NATO countries began in the 1980s. By the end of the Cold War, two states had done this: the United States and the United Kingdom (1987). By the end of the 20th century, they had been followed by France (1992) and Turkey (1994). This article describes the chronology of changes in this area up to January 2020, by which time 18 out of 29 NATO states had upgraded their special forces to the status of separate branches of their armed forces or troops. Two models of management had been adopted within the framework of the autonomization of the said units, which at the beginning of the 2020s comprised up to 5% of all armed forces.

Abstract Landscape perception research into the impact of seasonally changing landscape characteristics with the simultaneous influence of the weather are rare. Therefore, eye-tracking metrics were calculated (fixation and saccades) for the whole tested landscape, while its areas of interest (AOIs) were established based on clustering methods. Moreover, the gaze pattern was analysed using the Voronoi cells method. To identify significant differences in landscape perception according to various weather and seasonality, nonparametric tests were applied. The significant influence of weather/seasonality and their synergistic influence is noticed. The results indicate a rather complex influence of the types of weather in warmer and cooler seasons. Regardless of the weather type, seasonal changes cause greater visual span and shorter fixations in the warmer season. The fixations and saccades are shorter in the warmer season in two AOI’s during positive weather, but are longer in negative weather during the colder season in most AOI’s. The main reasons for the influence of weather and seasonality on the visual perception include seasonal changes in the landscape, resulting in the appearance of the landscape from more urban to natural and vice versa (phenological changes) as well as lighting changes (due to seasonality and type of weather).

Abstract As a relatively new form of sport, esports offers unparalleled data availability. Our work aims to open esports to a broader scientific community by supplying raw and pre-processed files from StarCraft II esports tournaments. These files can be used in statistical and machine learning modeling tasks and compared to laboratory-based measurements. Additionally, we open-sourced and published all the custom tools that were developed in the process of creating our dataset. These tools include PyTorch and PyTorch Lightning API abstractions to load and model the data. Our dataset contains replays from major and premiere StarCraft II tournaments since 2016. We processed 55 “replaypacks” that contained 17930 files with game-state information. Our dataset is one of the few large publicly available sources of StarCraft II data upon its publication. Analysis of the extracted data holds promise for further Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), psychological, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and sports-related studies in a variety of supervised and self-supervised tasks.

Recombinant adeno-associated viruses (rAAVs) have emerged as one of the most promising gene therapy vectors that have been successfully used in pre-clinical models of heart disease. However, this has not translated well to humans due to species differences in rAAV transduction efficiency. As a result, the search for human cardiotropic capsids is a major contemporary challenge. We used a capsid-shuffled rAAV library to perform directed evolution in human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs). Five candidates emerged, with four presenting high sequence identity to AAV6, while a fifth divergent variant was related to AAV3b. Functional analysis of the variants was performed in vitro using hiPSC-CMs, cardiac organoids, human cardiac slices, non-human primate and porcine cardiac slices, as well as mouse heart and liver in vivo. We showed that cell entry was not the best predictor of transgene expression efficiency. The novel variant rAAV.KK04 was the best-performing vector in human-based screening platforms, exceeding the benchmark rAAV6. None of the novel capsids demonstrate a significant transduction of liver in vivo. The range of experimental models used revealed the value of testing for tropism differences under the conditions of human specificity, bona fide, myocardium and cell type of interest.

In this paper, the authors present a novel construction of an automatic balancing device applicable to balancing shafts working in a heavily polluted environment. The novelty of the presented system lies in the fact that its utilization requires no changes to be made in the already existing shafts. Also, the system is capable of working during the operation of the balanced shaft, so there is no need to stop it. The propulsion system is based on eddy current braking, therefore no wires need to be used in the device. During the development process of the system, three iterations of the device were created. Each iteration is presented, described, and discussed. The advantages and drawbacks of each version are pointed out and explained thoroughly. The correctness of the design was verified by the created devices that were assembled and fixed on shafts to prove the design assumptions.

Anemia and iron deficiency (ID) are common complications in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), but their underlying causes remain unclear. This study investigated the incidence and characteristics of anemia and micronutrient deficiencies in PDAC patients before initiating chemotherapy. A total of 103 PDAC patients were included, comprising 67 in the palliative and 36 in the adjuvant groups. The overall incidence of anemia was 42.7% (n = 44), with comparable rates in both groups. Normocytic and normochromic anemia were predominant, with mild and moderate cases observed in 32% and 10.7% of the cohort, respectively. ID was evident in 51.4% of patients, with absolute ID more frequent in the adjuvant than in the palliative group (19.4% vs. 13.4%). Functional ID occurred more often in the palliative than in the adjuvant group (41.8% vs. 25%). Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency occurred in n = 5) of patients. Furthermore, 8.7% (n = 9) of patients had chronic kidney disease and anemia. To elucidate mechanisms of iron deficiency, the study explored the expression of iron regulators (hepcidin (HEP), ferroportin (FPN), and ZIP14 protein) and mitochondrial mass in PDAC tissue with immunohistochemical (IHC) staining and Perl’s Prussian blue to detect iron deposits on available tumor samples (n = 56). ZIP14 expression was significantly higher in less advanced tumors (p = 0.01) and correlated with mitochondrial mass (p < 0.001), potentially indicating its role in local iron homeostasis. However, no significant impact of tissue iron regulators on patient survival was observed. Perl’s Prussian blue staining revealed iron deposits within macrophages, but not in pancreatic duct cells. Furthermore, the GEPIA database was used to compare mRNA expression of iron regulators (HEP, FPN, and ZIP14) and other genes encoding iron transport and storage, including Transferrin Receptor Protein 1 (TfR1) and both ferritin chain subunits (FTH and FTL), in PDAC and normal pancreatic samples. FPN, TfR1, FTH, and FTL showed higher expression in tumor tissues, indicating increased iron usage by cancer. ZIP14 expression was higher in the pancreas than in PDAC and was correlated with FPN expression. The study highlights the importance of baseline iron status assessment in managing PDAC patients due to the high incidence of anemia and iron deficiency. Furthermore, ZIP14, in addition to HEP and FPN, may play a crucial role in local iron homeostasis in PDAC patients, providing valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms of iron dysregulation.

Abstract Background Lifetime (or long-term) exposure to air pollution has been linked to an increased risk of premature death. This association might persist even at low air pollutant concentrations level. The objective was to describe and compare lifetime exposures to PM10, PM2.5, NO2, benzene, and benzo(a)pyrene in two differently polluted localities and quantify years of life lost due to all-cause mortality attributable to PM10, PM2.5, NO2. Methods The study population was selected from two differently polluted localities of the Czech Republic from the period 2000–2017. For determination of lifetime exposures specially developed methodology for historical air pollutants time series concentrations estimation was used. Estimated lifetime exposures, new WHO air quality guideline levels and relative risks were used to quantify years of life lost due to all-cause mortality attributable to air pollutants. Results Significant differences in lifetime exposures of air pollutants between study areas were found. Average lifetime exposure to PM10, PM2.5, NO2, benzene and B(a)P was 45.6 μg/m3, 34.9 μg/m3, 18.1 μg/m3, 2.1 μg/m3and 2.6 ng/m3, respectively, in high-polluted area, against 24.9 μg/m3, 19.4 μg/m3, 13.3 μg/m3, 0.8 μg/m3, 0.4 ng/m3 in low-polluted area. All-cause mortality and years of life lost due to all-cause mortality (non-external) were higher in high-polluted area. The highest contribution was found for PM2.5, when the population attributable fraction was at the 23% level for the high polluted area and at the 14% level for the low polluted area. The highest losses of 35,776 years per 100,000 men or 131 days per 1 man were achieved in the high polluted area and in a case of PM2.5 exposure, namely for men in the age category of 80–84 years. Additionally, the results were expressed per number of deaths. The average value for the number of deaths attributable to PM2.5 exposure was 4.75 years per1 death man, or 3.51 years per 1 death woman in a high-polluted area. Conclusions Expression of years of life lost due to all-cause mortality attributable to air pollution per number of deaths can be more appropriate for communication about health risks or in the field of public health protection.

Abstract Aim The aim of our study was to translate and adapt the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire developed by Roff et al. to the cultural conditions in Poland and also to validate it. Studying the learning environment is beneficial because it can identify students’ perceptions of their environment and support the staff in reflecting on, planning for and combining proper teaching approaches to improve it. Methods The DREEM questionnaire was completed by students of all years (first–fifth) in the faculties of dental medicine at the Medical University of Lublin and the Medical University of Gdańsk. The total surveyed population consisted of 650 students. Validity was separated into four phases: (1) translation validity, (2) confirmatory factor analysis, (3) concurrent validity and (4) criterion-related validity. Results Our study confirmed the original structure of the DREEM tool (GFI = 0.955, AGFI = 0.951, NFI = 0.931, TLI = 0.962, CFI = 0.964, RNI = 0.964, IFI = 0.964, RFI = 0.928, PNFI = 0.885, SRMR = 0.062, RMSEA = 0.043, 90% CI = 0.041–0.046) and obtained very good reliability rates, with Cronbach’s alpha > 0.7 for all scales. Only Subscale V achieved a lower Cronbach’s alpha of > 0.5. The study was conducted using the test–retest method, which is why the intraclass correlation coefficients for reliability were also calculated; individual items showed both medium and good correspondence. Conclusions Our study provided good evidence for the reliability and validity of the Polish version of the DREEM. In conclusion, the Polish-language version of the DREEM questionnaire is a reliable and valid instrument for analysing the learning environment for dental students and its factor structure is supported by the data.

Abstract Background Advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is therapeutically challenging. RCC progression is facilitated by mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) that exert remarkable tumor tropism. The specific mechanisms mediating MSCs’ migration to RCC remain unknown. Here, we aimed to comprehensively analyze RCC secretome to identify MSCs attractants. Methods Conditioned media (CM) were collected from five RCC-derived cell lines (Caki-1, 786-O, A498, KIJ265T and KIJ308T) and non-tumorous control cell line (RPTEC/TERT1) and analyzed using cytokine arrays targeting 274 cytokines in addition to global CM proteomics. MSCs were isolated from bone marrow of patients undergoing standard orthopedic surgeries. RCC CM and the selected recombinant cytokines were used to analyze their influence on MSCs migration and microarray-targeted gene expression. The expression of genes encoding cytokines was evaluated in 100 matched-paired control-RCC tumor samples. Results When compared with normal cells, CM from advanced RCC cell lines (Caki-1 and KIJ265T) were the strongest stimulators of MSCs migration. Targeted analysis of 274 cytokines and global proteomics of RCC CM revealed decreased DPP4 and EGF, as well as increased AREG, FN1 and MMP1, with consistently altered gene expression in RCC cell lines and tumors. AREG and FN1 stimulated, while DPP4 attenuated MSCs migration. RCC CM induced MSCs’ transcriptional reprogramming, stimulating the expression of CD44, PTX3 and RAB27B. RCC cells secreted hyaluronic acid (HA), a CD44 ligand mediating MSCs’ homing to the kidney. AREG emerged as an upregulator of MSCs’ transcription. Conclusions Advanced RCC cells secrete AREG, FN1 and HA to induce MSCs migration, while DPP4 loss prevents its inhibitory effect on MSCs homing. RCC secretome induces MSCs’ transcriptional reprograming to facilitate their migration. The identified components of RCC secretome represent potential therapeutic targets. Graphical abstract

Abstract Current machine perfusion technology permits livers to be preserved ex situ for short periods to assess viability prior to transplant. Long-term normothermic perfusion of livers is an emerging field with tremendous potential for the assessment, recovery, and modification of organs. In this study, we aimed to develop a long-term model of ex situ perfusion including a surgical split and simultaneous perfusion of both partial organs. Human livers declined for transplantation were perfused using a red blood cell-based perfusate under normothermic conditions (36 °C) and then split and simultaneously perfused on separate machines. Ten human livers were split, resulting in 20 partial livers. The median ex situ viability was 125 h, and the median ex situ survival was 165 h. Long-term survival was demonstrated by lactate clearance, bile production, Factor-V production, and storage of adenosine triphosphate. Here, we report the long-term ex situ perfusion of human livers and demonstrate the ability to split and perfuse these organs using a standardised protocol.

This research investigates the potential of using bedded salt formations for underground hydrogen storage. We present a novel artificial intelligence framework that employs spatial data analysis and multi-criteria decision-making to pinpoint the most appropriate sites for hydrogen storage in salt caverns. This methodology incorporates a comprehensive platform enhanced by a deep learning algorithm, specifically a convolutional neural network (CNN), to generate suitability maps for rock salt deposits for hydrogen storage. The efficacy of the CNN algorithm was assessed using metrics such as Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and the Correlation Coefficient (R2), with comparisons made to a real-world dataset. The CNN model showed outstanding performance, with an R2 of 0.96, MSE of 1.97, MAE of 1.003, and RMSE of 1.4. This novel approach leverages advanced deep learning techniques to offer a unique framework for assessing the viability of underground hydrogen storage. It presents a significant advancement in the field, offering valuable insights for a wide range of stakeholders and facilitating the identification of ideal sites for hydrogen storage facilities, thereby supporting informed decision-making and sustainable energy infrastructure development.

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2)-enhanced geothermal systems (EGSs) in Poland, focusing on their energetic performance through process modeling and optimization. EGSs harness the potential of geothermal energy by utilizing supercritical carbon dioxide as the working fluid, offering promising avenues for sustainable power generation. This study investigates two distinct configurations of sCO2-EGS: one dedicated to power generation via a binary system with an organic Rankine cycle and the other for combined power and heat production through a direct sCO2 cycle. Through accurate process modeling and simulation, key parameters influencing system efficiency and performance are identified and optimized. The analysis integrates thermodynamic principles with geological and operational constraints specific to the Polish context. The results highlight the potential of sCO2-EGSs to contribute to the country’s energy transition, offering insights into the optimal design and operation of such systems for maximizing both power and thermal output while ensuring economic viability and environmental sustainability.

The key association between gut dysbiosis and cancer is already known. Here, we used whole-genome shotgun sequencing (WGS) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to conduct metagenomic and metabolomic analyses to identify common and distinct taxonomic configurations among 40, 45, 71, 34, 50, 60, and 40 patients with colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, lymphoid neoplasms and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), respectively, and compared the data with those from sex- and age-matched healthy controls (HC). α-diversity differed only between the lymphoid neoplasm and AML groups and their respective HC, while β-diversity differed between all groups and their HC. Of 203 unique species, 179 and 24 were under- and over-represented, respectively, in the case groups compared with HC. Of these, Faecalibacillus intestinalis was under-represented in each of the seven groups studied, Anaerostipes hadrus was under-represented in all but the stomach cancer group, and 22 species were under-represented in the remaining five case groups. There was a marked reduction in the gut microbiome cancer index in all case groups except the AML group. Of the short-chain fatty acids and amino acids tested, the relative concentration of formic acid was significantly higher in each of the case groups than in HC, and the abundance of seven species of Faecalibacterium correlated negatively with most amino acids and formic acid, and positively with the levels of acetic, propanoic, and butanoic acid. We found more differences than similarities between the studied malignancy groups, with large variations in diversity, taxonomic/metabolomic profiles, and functional assignments. While the results obtained may demonstrate trends rather than objective differences that correlate with different types of malignancy, the newly developed gut microbiota cancer index did distinguish most of the cancer cases from HC. We believe that these data are a promising step forward in the search for new diagnostic and predictive tests to assess intestinal dysbiosis among cancer patients.

Dental composites are gaining great popularity in restorative dentistry because of their aesthetic appeal and capacity to replicate the natural color of teeth. Nevertheless, their lifespan and durability rely on various factors, such as the polishing technique and the environmental conditions they are exposed to. The study aimed to assess the influence of the method of final polishing of dental composite on the surface roughness and microhardness of materials also considering the environment of different pHs. Disc-shaped samples (5 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness) have been prepared for microhardness and roughness tests from two dental composites: A2 Clearfil Majesty ES 2 Classic and A2D Clearfil Majesty Premium. One-third of samples were polished with polishing discs, OptiDisc, another one-third of samples were polished with Eve Diacomp Twist rubbers and polishing brush with diamond particles, and rest of the samples were stored without any polishing (the control group). Tested materials were incubated in distilled water or acidic buffer (pH = 2) for 3 weeks at a temperature of 37 °C. No statistically significant differences were found for roughness for the two materials tested after incubation in liquids. A decrease in Vicker microhardness was found for Clearfil Majesty ES 2 Classic after soaking in a low pH liquid, and no such relationship was found for Clearfil Majesty Premium. The improved resistance of these materials to the negative oral environment may result in the longer survival of composite restorations in patients with poor diet or diseases, causing a decrease in oral pH.

This paper introduces a three-layer system, proposing a comprehensive model of granular mixture transport over a mobile sloped bed in a steady flow. This system, consisting of the bottom, contact, and upper zones, provides complete, continuous sediment velocity and concentration vertical profiles. The aim of this study is to develop and experimentally verify this model for sediment transport over a bottom locally sloping in line with or opposite the direction of sediment flow. The model considers gravity’s effect on sediment transport in the bottom (dense) layer when the component of gravity parallel to the bottom acts together with shear stresses associated with water flow. This is a crucial factor often overlooked in previous studies. This effect causes an increase in velocity in the mobile sublayer of the dense layer and significantly affects the vertical distributions of velocity and concentration above this layer. The proposed shear variation due to the interaction between fractions and an intensive sediment mixing and sorting process over a mobile sloped bed adds to the novelty of our approach. The data sets used for the model’s validation cover various conditions, including slopes, grain diameters, densities, and grain mobility conditions, from incipient motion to a fully mobilized bed. This extensive validation process instils confidence in the theoretical description and its applicability to real-world scenarios in the design of hydraulic infrastructure, such as dams, barrages, bridges, and irrigation, and flood control systems.

(1) Background: Haemorrhagic strokes (HS), including intracerebral (ICH) and subarachnoid haemorrhages (SAH), account for approximately 10–15% of strokes worldwide but are associated with worse functional outcomes and higher rates of mortality, and financial burden than ischemic stroke. There is evidence that confirmed poor air quality may increase the incidence of haemorrhagic strokes. The aim of our study was to evaluate the association between individual ambient air pollutants and the risk of haemorrhagic stroke in an urban environment without high levels of air pollution. (2) Methods: A time-series cross-sectional study design was used. A daily air pollution concentration (Agency of Regional Air Quality Monitoring in the Gdansk Metropolitan Area) and incidence of haemorrhagic strokes (National Health Fund) were obtained and covered the time period from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2018. A generalised additive model with Poisson regression was used to estimate the associations between 24-h mean concentrations of SO2, NO, NO2, NOx, CO, PM10, PM2.5, and O3 and a daily number of haemorrhagic strokes. (3) Results: The single-day lag model results showed that NO2, NO and NOx exposure was associated with increased risk of ICH (88% events) with RR of 1.059 (95% CI: 1.015–1.105 for lag0), 1.033 (95% CI: 1.007–1.060 for lag0) and 1.031 (95% CI: 1.005–1.056 for lag0), but not for SAH (12% events). Exposure to CO was related to a substantial and statistically significant increase in incidence for 1.031 (95% CI: 1.002–1.061 for lag0) but not for SAH. Higher SO2, PM10, PM2.5, and O3 exposures were not significantly related to both ISC and SAH. (4) Conclusions: In this time-series cross-sectional study, we found strong evidence that supports the hypothesis that transient elevations in ambient NO2, NO and CO are associated with a higher relative risk of intracerebral but not subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Conveyor belts are vital for material transportation in coal mines due to their cost-effectiveness and versatility. These belts endure significant wear from harsh operating conditions, risking substantial financial losses if they fail. This study develops five artificial neural network (ANN) models to predict conveyor belt damage using 11 parameters from the Belchatow brown coal mine in Poland. The models target five outputs: number of repairs and cable cuts, cumulative number of repairs and cable cuts, and their ages. Various optimizers (Adam, Nadam, RMSprop, Adamax, and stochastic gradient descent or SGD) and activation functions (ReLU, Swish, sigmoid, tanh, Leaky ReLU, and softmax) were tested to find the optimal configurations. The predictive performance was evaluated using three error indicators against actual mine data. Superior models can forecast belt behavior under specific conditions, aiding proactive maintenance. The study also advocates for the Diagbelt+ system over human inspections for failure detection. This modeling approach enhances proactive maintenance, preventing total system breakdowns due to belt wear.

Recently, we compared an interplay of the adenosine system and nitric oxide (NO) in the regulation of renal function between male normoglycaemic (NG) and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats (DM). Considering the between-sex functional differences, e.g., in the NO status, we present similar studies performed in female rats. We examined if the theophylline effects (non-selective adenosine antagonist) in NG and DM females with or without active NO synthases differed from the earlier findings. In anaesthetised female Sprague Dawley rats, both NG and DM, untreated or after NO synthesis blockade with L-NAME, theophylline effects, on blood pressure, renal hemodynamics and excretion, and renal tissue NO were investigated. Renal artery blood flow (Transonic probe), cortical, outer-, and inner-medullary flows (laser-Doppler technique), and renal tissue NO signal (selective electrode) were measured. In contrast to males, in female NG and DM rats, theophylline induced renal vasodilation. In NO-deficient females, theophylline induced comparable renal vasodilatation, confirming the vasoconstrictor influence of the renal adenosine. In NG and DM females with intact NO synthesis, adenosine inhibition diminished kidney tissue NO, contrasting with an increase reported in males. Lowered baseline renal excretion in DM females suggested stimulation of renal tubular reabsorption due to the prevalence of antinatriuretic over natriuretic tubular action of adenosine receptors. An opposite inter-receptor balance pattern emerged previously from male studies. The study exposed between-sex functional differences in the interrelation of adenosine and NO in rats with normoglycaemia and streptozotocin diabetes. The findings also suggest that in diabetes mellitus, the abundance of individual receptor types can distinctly differ between females and males.

The manuscript analyzes the impact of the HVOF (high-velocity oxygen fuel) coating spraying technology on a substrate made of a light and high-specific-strength magnesium casting alloy from the AZ31 series. Among others, the following were examined: the influence of the spraying distance of coatings using commercial cermet powders (WC–Co, WC–Co–Cr, and WC–Cr3C2–Ni) on their resistance to erosive wear. It is worth emphasizing the energy savings resulting from the possibility of spraying on the surfaces of existing machine parts to protect or regenerate them. Energy savings result from the possibility of recycling the substrate material (AZ31), as well as from extending the functionality of an existing element without the need to dispose of it and the energy-intensive production of a new component. Tests have shown that the best resistance to the destructive effects of erodent in the form of hard corundum particles is characterized by a WC–Co–Cr coating sprayed at a distance of 320 mm.

Cancer is one of the major causes of mortality and is the second leading cause of death. Diabetes mellitus is a serious and growing problem worldwide, and its prevalence continues to grow; it is the 12th leading cause of death. An association between diabetes mellitus and cancer has been suggested for more than 100 years. Diabetes is a common disease diagnosed among patients with cancer, and evidence indicates that approximately 8–18% of patients with cancer have diabetes, with investigations suggesting an association between diabetes and some particular cancers, increasing the risk for developing cancers such as pancreatic, liver, colon, breast, stomach, and a few others. Breast and colorectal cancers have increased from 20% to 30% and there is a 97% increased risk of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma or endometrial cancer. On the other hand, a number of cancers and cancer therapies increase the risk of diabetes mellitus. Complications due to diabetes in patients with cancer may influence the choice of cancer therapy. Unfortunately, the mechanisms of the associations between diabetes mellitus and cancer are still unknown. The aim of this review is to summarize the association of diabetes mellitus with selected cancers and update the evidence on the underlying mechanisms of this association.

Thermoresponsive shape memory polymers (SMPs) have garnered increasing interest for their exceptional ability to retain a temporary shape and recover the original configuration through temperature changes, making them promising in various applications. The SMP shape change and recovery that happen due to a combination of mechanical loading and appropriate temperatures are related to its particular microstructure. The deformation process leads to the formation and growth of micro-cracks in the SMP structure, whereas the subsequent heating over its glass transition temperature Tg leads to the recovery of its original shape and properties. These processes also affect the SMP microstructure. In addition to the observed macroscopic shape recovery, the healing of micro-crazes and micro-cracks that have nucleated and developed during the loading occurs. Therefore, our study delves into the microscopic aspect, specifically addressing the healing of micro-cracks in the cyclic loading process. The proposed research concerns a thermoplastic polyurethane shape memory polymer (PU-SMP) MM4520 with a Tg of 45 °C. The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of the number of tensile loading-unloading cycles and thermal shape recovery on the evolution of the PU-SMP microstructure. To this end, comprehensive research starting from structural characterization of the initial state and at various stages of the PU-SMP mechanical loading was conducted. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used. Moreover, the shape memory behavior in the thermomechanical loading program was investigated. The obtained average shape fixity value was 99%, while the shape recovery was 92%, which confirmed good shape memory properties of the PU-SMP. Our findings reveal that even during a single loading-unloading tension cycle, crazes and cracks nucleate on the surface of the PU-SMP specimen, whereas the subsequent temperature-induced shape recovery process carried out at the temperature above Tg enables the healing of micro-cracks. Interestingly, the surface of the specimen after three and five loading-unloading cycles did not exhibit crazes and cracks, although some traces of cracks were visible. The traces disappeared after exposing the material to heating at Tg + 20 °C (65 °C) for 30 min. The crack closure phenomenon during deformation, even without heating over Tg, occurred within three and five subsequent cycles of loading-unloading. Notably, in the case of eight loading-unloading cycles, cracks appeared on the surface of the PU-SMP and were healed only after thermal recovery at the particular temperature over Tg. Upon reaching a critical number of cycles, the proper amount of energy required for crack propagation was attained, resulting in wide-open cracks on the material’s surface. It is worth noting that WAXS analysis did not indicate strong signs of typical highly ordered structures in the PU-SMP specimens in their initial state and after the loading history; however, some orientation after the cyclic deformation was observed.

Gender, through genetic, epigenetic and hormonal regulation, is an important modifier of the physiological mechanisms and clinical course of diseases. In diabetes mellitus, there are gender differences in incidence, prevalence, morbidity, and mortality. This disease also has an impact on the microvascular function. Therefore, this cross-sectional study was designed to investigate how gender affects the cutaneous microcirculation. We hypothesized that gender should be an important factor in the interpretation of capillaroscopy and transcutaneous oxygen saturation results. The study group consisted of 42 boys and 55 girls, uncomplicated diabetic pediatric patients. Females (F) and males (M) did not differ in terms of age, age at onset of diabetes, or diabetes duration. Furthermore, they did not differ in metabolic parameters. The comparison showed that group F had lower BP, higher pulse, and higher HR than group M. Group F had significantly lower creatinine and hemoglobin levels than group M. In children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes without complications, there was a gender difference in microcirculatory parameters. The resting transcutaneous partial pressure of oxygen was significantly higher in females than in males. However, there were no gender-related differences in basal capillaroscopic parameters or vascular reactivity during the PORH test. Our results indicate that studies investigating the structure and function of the microcirculation should consider the role of gender in addition to known cofactors such as puberty, body mass index, physical activity, and cigarette smoking.

Leukemias are cancers of the blood-forming system, representing a significant challenge in medical science. The development of leukemia cells involves substantial disturbances within the cellular machinery, offering hope in the search for effective selective treatments that could improve the 5-year survival rate. Consequently, the pathophysiological processes within leukemia cells are the focus of critical research. Enzymes such as cystathionine beta-synthase and sulfurtransferases like thiosulfate sulfurtransferase, 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase, and cystathionine gamma-lyase play a vital role in cellular sulfur metabolism. These enzymes are essential to maintaining cellular homeostasis, providing robust antioxidant defenses, and supporting cell division. Numerous studies have demonstrated that cancerous processes can alter the expression and activity of these enzymes, uncovering potential vulnerabilities or molecular targets for cancer therapy. Recent laboratory research has indicated that certain leukemia cell lines may exhibit significant changes in the expression patterns of these enzymes. Analysis of the scientific literature and online datasets has confirmed variations in sulfur enzyme function in specific leukemic cell lines compared to normal leukocytes. This comprehensive review collects and analyzes available information on sulfur enzymes in normal and leukemic cell lines, providing valuable insights and identifying new research pathways in this field.

Polish National Standards for underground excavation support design outline the deformational pressure model for assessing loads acting on the support systems of deep underground excavations. They distinguish two different rock mass models, highlighting the pivotal role of the critical longitudinal strain of the rock mass in appropriate model selection. A comparison between the design method given by Polish Standards and the widely recognized convergence–confinement method, consisting of a ground reaction curve (GRC), longitudinal displacement profile (LDP), and support characteristics curve (SCC), reveals the advantages of the latter in capturing the three-dimensional nature of underground excavations. The following study presents a method for establishing a GRC curve for the elasto-plasto-fractured rock mass model, featured in Polish Standards, demonstrating its applicability through analyses of a typical circular roadway under varying rock mass conditions. Practical implications are discussed, including the design of yielding steel arches as the primary support system and the calculation of safety factors for both the support system and the surrounding rock mass, considered as a natural support component. Overall, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the actions of rock masses in the vicinity of excavations located at great depths. Furthermore, it provides practical insights for engineering applications.

In recent years, hydroxyapatite, as a ceramic material, has been a subject of growing interest due to its optimal biological properties, which are useful especially in medical and dental applications. It has been increasingly used in dentistry as a filler in composites. Nevertheless, research has shown a deterioration of their mechanical properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the content of hydroxyapatite together with fluorine and silver on the mechanical properties of a hybrid composite used in conservative dentistry. The authors compared specimens of commercial hybrid composite with specimens of experimental hybrid composite containing 2 wt% and 5 wt% of hydroxyapatite powder with fluorine and silver. The composite specimens were subjected to hardness and impact strength measurements, as well as bending, compression, and tribological wear tests. The research results indicate that the mechanical properties of composites are influenced by the type and amount of filler used. Composite containing 2 wt% of hydroxyapatite powder along with calcium fluoride and silver provided acceptable results.

In this paper, results of research on the reactivities of selected biomass types considering their application in pyrometallurgical processes of metal production are presented. Walnut shells, sunflower husk pellets and spent coffee grounds were selected as biomass materials. Their use as potential reducers in the process of metallurgical slag decopperisation is an innovative approach to this subject. The thermogravimetric findings show that all three tested biomass types are classified as highly reactive. The time to reach maximum reactivity ranges from 1.5 to 3 min and, the lowest value is recorded for the sample of spent coffee grounds. The sample hold time of two hours enables copper content reduction to approx. 1 wt% for practically all the reducers tested. A longer duration of liquid slag contact with the reducer results in a decreased copper content in the slag to a value below 1 wt%. Copper concentrations of 0.5 wt% and lower are observed with a hold time of 4 h. The preliminary results indicate that there is great potential for the use of this type of material in non-ferrous metallurgy, which may translate into replacing fossil raw materials and thus introducing the principles of a sustainable process in this case of metal production.

This paper presents a comparative analysis of ausferritic ductile cast iron matrix obtained through heat treatment and in its raw state. Ausferrite without heat treatment was achieved by modifying the chemical composition, while nodular graphite was produced using Inmold technology. The presence of compacted graphite in the as-cast ausferritic cast iron was attributed to elements that impede the crystallization of nodular graphite. This study demonstrates that an ausferritic matrix in ductile cast iron can be achieved by incorporating molybdenum in conjunction with nickel or copper. Thermal and derivative analysis (TDA) revealed a minor thermal effect during the transformation of austenite into bainitic ferrite in as-cast ausferritic cast iron. Furthermore, the transformation of austenite in cast iron containing nickel was observed to occur at a temperature of approximately 60 °C higher than in cast iron with copper. The structure of bainitic ferrite platelets in as-cast ausferritic ductile cast iron resembled that of Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI). It was revealed that the amount of austenite in as-cast ausferritic ductile cast iron is more than double that in ADI. The carbon content of austenite was estimated theoretically, revealing that alloying additives in the as-cast ausferritic ductile cast iron reduce the solubility of carbon in austenite, thereby significantly influencing the properties of the cast iron.

Experience shows that dilution of lubricating oil with diesel oil is unfavorable to the engine, causing issues including deterioration of engine performance, shortening of oil life, and reduction in engine reliability and safety. This paper presents the verification of the hypothesis that the changes in lubricity, friction coefficient, and decreasing oil film thickness (using a relative approach, given as a percentage) are similar for lubricating oil and diesel mixtures prepared from fresh lubricating oil and used lubricating oil. To validate this hypothesis, an experiment is conducted using a high-frequency reciprocating rig (HFFR), in which the lubricity is determined by the corrected average wear scar WS1.4, the coefficient of friction μ, and the percentage relative decrease in oil film thickness r. A qualitative visual assessment of the wear scars on the test specimens is also performed after the HFFR tests. The testing covers mixtures of SAE 30 grade Marinol CB-30 RG1230 lubricating oil with Orlen Efecta Diesel Biodiesel. The used lubricating oil is extracted from the circulating lubrication system of a supercharged, trunk-piston, four-stroke ZUT Zgoda Sulzer 5 BAH 22 engine installed in the laboratory of ship power plants of the Maritime University of Szczecin. Mixtures for the experiment are prepared for fresh lubricating oil with diesel oil and used lubricating oil with diesel oil. Mixtures of these lubricating oils with diesel oil are examined for diesel oil concentrations in the mixture equal to 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 20% m/m. The results of the experiment confirm the hypothesis, proving that, for up to 20% m/m diesel oil concentration in lubricating oil, the changes in the lubricity of used lubricating oil diluted with diesel oil can be evaluated based on reference data prepared for mixtures of diesel oil with fresh lubricating oil. The linear approximation of μ and r trends is made with a certain margin of error we estimated. The experiment also confirms the results of previous studies which state that oil aging products in small quantities contribute to improved lubricity.

A field study in the years 2017–2019 was carried out to evaluate the impact of novel adjuvant formulations on the efficacy of sulfonylurea and synthetic auxin herbicides. Treatments included nicosulfuron + rimsulfuron + dicamba (N+R+D) at full and reduced rates with three multicomponent (TEST-1, TEST-2, TEST-3) as well as standard (MSO, S) adjuvants. In this greenhouse study, Echinochloa crus-galli seeds were planted and treated with N+R+D at 2–3 leaf stages. The water with the desired pH (4, 7, and 9) for the preparation of the spray liquid was prepared by incorporating citric acid or K3PO4 to either lower or raise the pH of the water. Adjuvant TEST-1 added to the spray liquid at pH 4 increased the effectiveness to 68%, TEST-2 to 81%, and TEST-3 to 80%, compared to 73% and 66% with the MSO and S. The efficacy of N+R+D at pH 7 with TEST-1 increased to 83%, TEST-2 to 82%, and TEST-3 to 77%, but with MSO, it increased to 81%, and 71% with S. Adjuvants TEST-1, TEST-2, and TEST-3 in the liquid at pH 9 increased efficacy to 76 and 80%, compared to 79 and 63% with MSO or S adjuvants. N+R+D applied with TEST-1, TEST-2, and TEST-3 provided greater weed control than herbicides with surfactant (S) and similar or even better than with standard methylated seed oil (MSO) adjuvants. Maize grain yield after herbicide-with-tested-adjuvant application was higher than from an untreated check, and comparable to yield from herbicide-with-MSO treatment, but higher than from S treatment.

Chromium- and cobalt-based alloys, as well as chrome–nickel steels, are most used in dental prosthetics. Unfortunately, these alloys, especially nickel-based alloys, can cause allergic reactions. A disadvantage of these alloys is also insufficient corrosion resistance. To improve the properties of these alloys, amorphous Si (C,N) coatings were deposited on the surfaces of metal specimens. This paper characterizes coatings of silicon carbide nitrides, deposited by the magnetron sputtering method on the surface of nickel–chromium alloys used in dental prosthetics. Depending on the deposition parameters, coatings with varying carbon to nitrogen ratios were obtained. The study analyzed their structure and chemical and phase composition. In addition, a study of surface wettability and surface roughness was performed. Based on the results obtained, it was found that amorphous coatings of Si (C,N) type with thicknesses of 2 to 4.5 µm were obtained. All obtained coatings increase the value of surface free energy. The study showed that Si (C,N)-type films can be used in dental prosthetics as protective coatings.

This study aimed to evaluate the earliest changes in the structure and function of the peripheral microcirculation using capillaroscopy and transcutaneous oxygen pressure measurement in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus at baseline and during post-occlusive reactive hyperemia (PORH) in the function of diabetes duration. Sixty-seven patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D), aged 8 to 18 years, and twenty-eight age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were included in the analysis. Diabetic patients were divided into subgroups based on median disease duration. The subgroups differed in chronological age, lipid levels, and thyroid hormones. Capillaroscopy was performed twice: at baseline and then again after the PORH test. Transcutaneous oxygen pressure also was recorded under baseline conditions during and after the PORH test. Comparison of capillaroscopy and transcutaneous oxygen pressure parameters at rest and after the PORH showed no statistically significant difference between the subgroups. This remained true after adjusting for variables that differentiated the two subgroups. However, in the group of patients with long-standing diabetes, significant negative correlations were observed between the Coverage value after the PORH test and capillary reactivity with TcPO2_zero (biological zero). Significant positive correlations were also found between distance after the PORH test and TcPO2_zero. The results of our study indicate that in patients with a shorter duration of diabetes, the use of multiple tests provides a better characterization of the structure and function of microcirculation because the onset of dysfunction does not occur at the same time in all the tests.

Introduction Radiosynovectomy (RSV) is a minimally invasive method of treating and controlling joint inflammation refractory to conventional pharmacotherapy. It consist in intraarticular injection of radioactive colloids which irradiate the inflamed synovial membrane to cause its subsequent involution. Despite the fact that the hip joint involvement is quite common in systemic inflammatory arthropathies, hip joint RSVs are rarely performed. The aim of this paper is to assess safety and efficacy of hip joint radioisotope treatment. Material and methods We retrospectively analyzed the effects of 21 hip joints RSVs performed in 14 patients (10 female, 4 male; aged 8 to 79; mean age 48 years). Before the RSV, all the patients underwent clinical and ultrasound examination. The RSVs were performed using rhenium-186 sulphide under ultrasound guidance. Each patient underwent post-therapeutic scintigraphy to assess intraarticular distribution of the radiopharmaceutical. The effects of the treatment were assessed clinically and ultrasonographically during at least 2 follow-up visits 3 and 6 months after the RSV. Results In 9 cases, we observed complete resolution of symptoms 3 and 6 months after the RSV. Four patients had only a partial response and required repeated treatment, and all responded well to second RSV. In four patients the treatment had no significant effect, and no repeated treatment attempt was made. All the responders suffered from inflammatory arthropathies; the non-responders had osteoarthritis, with no history of systemic diseases. In all the patients, no significant adverse effects were observed, in particular no radiation burns or infections. All post-therapeutic scintigrams showed proper, intraarticular distribution of the radiopharmaceutical. Conclusions Radiosynovectomy of the hip joint in systemic joint diseases, especially performed using ultrasound-guidance, is a safe and effective treatment modality.

Objectives These studies investigate a relationship between positive orientation, self-esteem, and attitudes towards money in young adults. The Covid-19 pandemic has left a significant mark on the lives of many people and young adults are particularly at risk because they do not have a stable position in the labour market. Material and methods The group of respondents was manually restricted to young adults, so analyses were conducted on a group of 296 people. Responses were collected online, through the Cognito Forms. Tools were used in the research: the author's sociodemographic questionnaire, the P Scale to measure the intensity of positive orientation, the Morris Rosenberg SES Self-Esteem Scale to measure self-esteem, and SPP-25 to measure attitudes towards money. Results There were 2 main hypotheses in the study: hypothesis one assuming a relationship between positive orientation and attitudes toward money, and hypothesis two assuming a relationship between self-esteem and attitudes towards money. All main hypotheses were confirmed. In addition, 9 detailed hypotheses were put forward regarding the correlation of individual dimensions of attitudes towards money and positive orientation and self-esteem. Conclusions Obtained results are of a practical nature and can be used, inter alia, in individual work with people who want to improve their financial situation. Research has shown that people with higher self-esteem and a greater intensity of positive orientation exhibit instrumental attitudes to a greater extent, and symbolic attitudes to a lesser extent. Young adults were the subject of the study, therefore results cannot be generalized to the entire population. It is justified to conduct research also in other age groups.

Abstract Background Numerous studies have indicated that alopecia areata is associated with a chronic systemic inflammation, which is considered as a risk factor for venous thromboembolism. The aim of the study was to evaluate the following markers of venous thromboembolism risk: soluble fibrin monomer complex (SFMC), thrombin–antithrombin complex (TATC), and prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 (F1 + 2) in patients with alopecia areata and compare them with healthy controls. Methods In total, 51 patients with alopecia areata [35 women and 16 men; mean age: 38 (19–54) years] and 26 controls [18 women and 8 men; mean age: 37 (29–51) years] were enrolled in the study. The serum concentrations of thromboembolism markers were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Abstract Background Bacteria of the Lactobacillus family are a part of the physiological flora of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and urinary tract. We have used them in the food industry as probiotics and supplements. In some settings, rod-shaped lactic acid bacteria may become pathogenic. It may occur in immunocompromised or heart disease patients after cardiac surgery, patients with disturbed intestinal wall permeability, or those treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. Case presentation We present rare bacteraemia induced by the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus casei in a 63-year-old patient after the attempted removal of ICD electrodes, complicated by acute regurgitation of the tricuspid valve. The patient underwent urgent cardiac surgery, the electrode elements were removed, and the tricuspid valve was replaced with a biological prosthesis. After surgery, the patient required intensive, multidisciplinary treatment with mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, broad-spectrum empirical antibiotic therapy, parenteral nutrition, and blood product transfusion because of multiple organ failure. On the 14th day of hospitalisation, the clinical symptoms of septic shock were observed. The microbiological investigation was performed, and Lactobacillus casei was cultured from a dialysis catheter sample. Dedicated antimicrobials were administered, and the patient was discharged home in good overall condition. Conclusions The present case shows that the promoted use of probiotics must be cautiously administered to patients in severe conditions, especially when accompanied by reduced immune system efficiency symptoms.

Od kilkudziesięciu lat w przestrzeni politycznej rośnie znaczenie partycypacji i jej niekonwencjonalnej formy. W artykule podjęto wybrane aspekty problematyki: (1) Uzasadnienia szerokiego ujęcia właściwości partycypacji, nieograniczonej do wymiaru systemu politycznego; (2) Dylematy związane z rozumieniem partycypacji, jej zgodności/niezgodności z normami systemu demokratycznego, ekskluzywnym i inkluzywnym charakterem, kwestią dobrowolności, rolą przemocy oraz narodowej i międzynarodowej areny aktywności politycznej; (3) Partycypacja niekonwencjonalna jako obiektywny mechanizm polityki, instrument strategii podmiotów władzy i aktywności podmiotów kontestujących dany ład społeczno-polityczny, właściwości i uwarunkowania partycypacji niekonwencjonalnej, w tym jej konkretne formy. ABSTRACT Unconventional Participation as a Political Mechanism – Dilemmas, Forms and Conditions For several decades, the importance of unconventional participation has been growing in the political space. The article deals with selected aspects of the issues: (1) Justification of a broad approach to the features of participation, not limited to the dimension of the political system; (2) Dilemmas related to the understanding of participation, its compliance/non-compliance with the norms of the democratic system, exclusive and inclusive nature, the issue of voluntariness, the role of violence, and the national and international arena of political activity; (3) Unconventional participation as an objective mechanism of politics, an instrument of the strategy of power entities and the activity of entities contesting a given socio-political order, properties and conditions of unconventional participation, including: its specific forms.

Background: Few data exist concerning the clinical correlates of Toxoplasma gondii infection in persons with schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between toxoplasmosis and schizophrenia regarding the quality of life, symptoms and course of hospitalisation in patients with schizophrenia. Methods: Acutely hospitalised patients (n = 67) were examined twice during their hospital stay. Schizophrenia psychopathology, quality of life, extrapyramidal symptoms and T. gondii antibody titres were assessed upon admission and at discharge. Results: Toxo-IgG (+) patients (59.7%) were older, less educated, more obese and less eager to undertake psychotherapy. Female gender and higher fertility were dominant in this group with abnormal involuntary movements more commonly observed. Lower antipsychotic drug doses and monotherapy were used more frequently for Toxo-IgG (+) patients. Lower education (OR 2.41, 95% CI 1.21-4.79) was the most important factor associated with higher likelihood of IgG seropositivity. High levels of Toxo-IgM antibodies correlated with lower quality of life (r = -0.37; p = 0.02) and more severe positive (r = 0.40; p = 0.01) and focal (r = 0.32; p = 0.04) schizophrenia symptoms. Conclusions: Toxoplasmosis is more common in older, obese women with lower education. Recent infection is linked to more severe schizophrenia symptoms. Patients with toxoplasmosis history were given less medication.

Biomedical data analysis is essential in current diagnosis, treatment, and patient condition monitoring. The large volumes of data that characterize this area require simple but accurate and fast methods of intellectual analysis to improve the level of medical services. Existing machine learning (ML) methods require many resources (time, memory, energy) when processing large datasets. Or they demonstrate a level of accuracy that is insufficient for solving a specific application task. In this paper, we developed a new ensemble model of increased accuracy for solving approximation problems of large biomedical data sets. The model is based on cascading of the ML methods and response surface linearization principles. In addition, we used Ito decomposition as a means of nonlinearly expanding the inputs at each level of the model. As weak learners, Support Vector Regression (SVR) with linear kernel was used due to many significant advantages demonstrated by this method among the existing ones. The training and application procedures of the developed SVR-based cascade model are described, and a flow chart of its implementation is presented. The modeling was carried out on a real-world tabular set of biomedical data of a large volume. The task of predicting the heart rate of individuals was solved, which provides the possibility of determining the level of human stress, and is an essential indicator in various applied fields. The optimal parameters of the SVR-based cascade model operating were selected experimentally. The authors shown that the developed model provides more than 20 times higher accuracy (according to Mean Squared Error (MSE)), as well as a significant reduction in the duration of the training procedure compared to the existing method, which provided the highest accuracy of work among those considered.

In Czechoslovakia, hardly any new churches were built during the communist regime. The exceptions include the modernist church of St. Joseph in Senetářov in Moravia, for which the modern cycle of The Way of the Cross was created in 1970. Its author is Mikuláš Medek (1926–1974), an outstanding Czech painter inspired by surrealism and the Informel formula. The composition in Senetářov belongs to the mature period of the artist’s work, in which he used unique metaphors. The author of the paper outlines the historical context of the founding of the church and interprets Medek’s The Way of the Cross against the background of post-war European art and contemporary solutions of the Passion cycle.

Abstract Background During domestication and subsequent improvement plants were subjected to intensive positive selection for desirable traits. Identification of selection targets is important with respect to the future targeted broadening of diversity in breeding programmes. Rye (Secale cereale L.) is a cereal that is closely related to wheat, and it is an important crop in Central, Eastern and Northern Europe. The aim of the study was (i) to identify diverse groups of rye accessions based on high-density, genome-wide analysis of genetic diversity within a set of 478 rye accessions, covering a full spectrum of diversity within the genus, from wild accessions to inbred lines used in hybrid breeding, and (ii) to identify selective sweeps in the established groups of cultivated rye germplasm and putative candidate genes targeted by selection. Results Population structure and genetic diversity analyses based on high-quality SNP (DArTseq) markers revealed the presence of three complexes in the Secale genus: S. sylvestre, S. strictum and S. cereale/vavilovii, a relatively narrow diversity of S. sylvestre, very high diversity of S. strictum, and signatures of strong positive selection in S. vavilovii. Within cultivated ryes we detected the presence of genetic clusters and the influence of improvement status on the clustering. Rye landraces represent a reservoir of variation for breeding, and especially a distinct group of landraces from Turkey should be of special interest as a source of untapped variation. Selective sweep detection in cultivated accessions identified 133 outlier positions within 13 sweep regions and 170 putative candidate genes related, among others, to response to various environmental stimuli (such as pathogens, drought, cold), plant fertility and reproduction (pollen sperm cell differentiation, pollen maturation, pollen tube growth), and plant growth and biomass production. Conclusions Our study provides valuable information for efficient management of rye germplasm collections, which can help to ensure proper safeguarding of their genetic potential and provides numerous novel candidate genes targeted by selection in cultivated rye for further functional characterisation and allelic diversity studies.

Abstract Background Parotoid gland secretion of bufonid toads is a rich source of toxic molecules that are used against predators, parasites and pathogens. Bufadienolides and biogenic amines are the principal compounds responsible for toxicity of parotoid secretion. Many toxicological and pharmacological analyses of parotoid secretions have been performed, but little is known about the processes related to poison production and secretion. Therefore, our aim was to investigate protein content in parotoids of the common toad, Bufo bufo, to understand the processes that regulate synthesis and excretion of toxins as well as functioning of parotoid macroglands. Results Applying a proteomic approach we identified 162 proteins in the extract from toad’s parotoids that were classified into 11 categories of biological functions. One-third (34.6%) of the identified molecules, including acyl-CoA-binding protein, actin, catalase, calmodulin, and enolases, were involved in cell metabolism. We found many proteins related to cell division and cell cycle regulation (12.0%; e.g. histone and tubulin), cell structure maintenance (8.4%; e.g. thymosin beta-4, tubulin), intra- and extracellular transport (8.4%), cell aging and apoptosis (7.3%; e.g. catalase and pyruvate kinase) as well as immune (7.0%; e.g. interleukin-24 and UV excision repair protein) and stress (6.3%; including heat shock proteins, peroxiredoxin-6 and superoxide dismutase) response. We also identified two proteins, phosphomevalonate kinase and isopentenyl-diphosphate delta-isomerase 1, that are involved in synthesis of cholesterol which is a precursor for bufadienolides biosynthesis. STRING protein-protein interaction network predicted for identified proteins showed that most proteins are related to metabolic processes, particularly glycolysis, stress response and DNA repair and replication. The results of GO enrichment and KEGG analyses are also consistent with these findings. Conclusion This finding indicates that cholesterol may be synthesized in parotoids, and not only in the liver from which is then transferred through the bloodstream to the parotoid macroglands. Presence of proteins that regulate cell cycle, cell division, aging and apoptosis may indicate a high epithelial cell turnover in parotoids. Proteins protecting skin cells from DNA damage may help to minimize the harmful effects of UV radiation. Thus, our work extends our knowledge with new and important functions of parotoids, major glands involved in the bufonid chemical defence.

An important role in the effective functioning and promotion of transport is played not only by transport and forwarding companies, but also by non-governmental organizations, closely cooperating with the industry and representing them in decision-making bodies. The article presents selected organizations representing the transport sector at the global and community forums. The analysis covers the influence of these organizations on establishing international law, unifying technical, organizational, operational and economic solutions, and the preparation of shipping documents. The activities aimed at standardization and unification of land transport for the purposes of intermodal transport were also discussed.

Abstract Spatial transcriptomics maps gene expression across tissues, posing the challenge of determining the spatial arrangement of different cell types. However, spatial transcriptomics spots contain multiple cells. Therefore, the observed signal comes from mixtures of cells of different types. Here, we propose an innovative probabilistic model, Celloscope, that utilizes established prior knowledge on marker genes for cell type deconvolution from spatial transcriptomics data. Celloscope outperforms other methods on simulated data, successfully indicates known brain structures and spatially distinguishes between inhibitory and excitatory neuron types based in mouse brain tissue, and dissects large heterogeneity of immune infiltrate composition in prostate gland tissue.

Abstract Psoriasis is a common skin disorder that should be differentiated from other dermatoses if an effective treatment has to be applied. Regions of Interests, or scans for short, of diseased skin are processed by the VGG16 (or VGG19) deep convolutional neural network operating as a feature extractor. 1280 features related to a given scan are passed to the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier using Radial Basis Functions (RBF) kernels. The main quality of the described setup is a very small number of 75 psoriasis patients and 75 non-psoriasis patients used in the teaching and testing sets taken together. For each patient, a variable number of clinical images are taken. Then, the scans of size $$256 \times 256$$ 256 × 256 pixels are cropped from these images. There are 1988 scans of psoriasis patients and 1582 of non-psoriasis patients. The other quality of the described setup is the use of transfer learning for carrying over the neural network’s weights from non-medical domain (ImageNet) to clinical images of dermatoses. The next quality is that the input images are obtained with smart phone cameras without any special arrangements or equipment, so there is a great variability in working conditions, which hampers discriminative power of the classifier. The primary classification is carried out on individual scans, and then, majority voting is executed among the scans pertaining to an individual patient. The obtained recall (sensitivity) is 85.33%, and the precision is 82.58%. The 95% confidence interval for the accuracy of 80.08% is [77.14, 83.04]%. These numbers indicate that the described system can be useful for remote diagnosing of psoriasis, particularly in areas where access to dermatological personnel is limited.
