In each corner of the rectangle are vignettes illustrating the battles at Trenton, Princeton, Valley Forge, and Surrender of Cornwallis. Above the title is the facsimile signature Go Washington. Entered according to act of Congress by J.C. Buttre in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the Southern District Court of New York AD 1866.

A portrait of Arthur W. Austin. This portrait appeared in the "United States Democratic Review," v.41, no. 4, april, 1858, opposite p. 257. This impression appears to have been issued as a single sheet. Arthur Williams Austin was born in Charlestown, Mass., in 1807. He was a lawyer and was very active in local oplitics both in Charlestown and in West Roxbury where he moved some time after 1839.

A portrait of Isaac Wheeler Avery. Isaac Wheeler Avery was a Confederate soldier, journalist, and politician. In 1872 he entered politics as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention. He became a leader in the South in promoting direct trade between the U.S. and other countries. Avery's writings include The History of the State of Georgia, 1850-1881. A portrait of Rev. William Adams with a facsimile of his signature below. Similar prints appear in the "American Portrait Gallery" by John Chester Buttre and in the "New York Genealogical and Biographical Record." William Adams was a Presbyterian clergyman who helped found the Union Theological Seminary in 1836 and was its president in 1874.

Portrait of Abraham Lincoln standing with his left hand on his waist and his right hand resting on the table., This print was originally of John Charles Fremont, but in 1860, Fremont's face was removed and replaced by Lincoln's. In the version shown here, issued in 1865, a beard was added to Lincoln's face.

Portrait of the Lincoln family sitting around a table. Abraham's and Tad's poses are based on a photograph taken by Anthony Berger. Robert is standing behind the table, Willie is in the middle, and Mary is on the left., "Writing of the plans to publish this print, Carpenter said: 'Mr. Buttre proposes to engrave the picture in superb style - to be published only by subscription. I commend him to the kind consideration of my friends.'"

Portrait of Abraham Lincoln standing with his left hand on his waist and his right hand resting on the table., This originally started out as a print of John Charles Fremont, which was probably issued in 1856. It got updated in 1860 when Buttre burnished out the face of Fremont and inserted Lincoln's face, from the Cooper Institute photograph by Mathew Brady. "In so doing, he saved an expensive steel plate and provided a 'new' engraving of a newly marketable public figure. Then, in 1865, during another period of high demand for Lincoln images, the print was dusted off again and again revised, this time with the addition of a beard."
