A portrait of Isaac Wheeler Avery. Isaac Wheeler Avery was a Confederate soldier, journalist, and politician. In 1872 he entered politics as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention. He became a leader in the South in promoting direct trade between the U.S. and other countries. Avery's writings include The History of the State of Georgia, 1850-1881.
