Skirtingai nei daugelis Renesanso autorių, Strijkovskis buvo iš karto palankiai amžininkų priimtas, o jo kūryba, pirmiausia "Kronika", pasklido ne tik senojoje Lietuvoje, bet ir visame Vidurio ir Rytų Europos regione. "Kronika" darė poveikį visu laikotarpiu iki pat Abiejų Tautų Respublikos žlugimo ir netgi vėliau. Tas poveikis nebuvo vienodas. Iš pradžių jo būta stipresnio; pasirodžius Alberto Kojalavičiaus "Lietuvos istorijai", tas poveikis apsilpo, tačiau nuo XIX a. pradžios ji vėl buvo plačiau skaitoma, perspausdinama, ja buvo remiamasi grožiniuose kūriniuose ir Lietuvos mokyklose. Tai lėmė kelios svarbios ypatybės. Strijkovskio "Kronikos" tekstai atitiko kelių kartų visuomenės ideologinius, politinius, kultūrinius ir meninius lūkesčius. Antra, kaip ir Trečiasis Lietuvos Statutas, Kronika savomis - idėjinėmis ir meninėmis - priemonėmis grindė Respublikos pilietinės tautos politinę ir kultūrinę tapatybę. Trečia, Kronikos sėkmingą sklaidą užtikrino kalba, kuria ji buvo parašyta. XVI a. tapusi regionine bendravimo ir visokeriopos komunikacijos priemone, lenkų kalba savo ruožtu garantavo ilgesnį gyvavimą visiems ja parašytiems raštijos paminklams bei literatūros kūriniams.

Šiuolaikiniame viešajame diskurse pasirodantys prieštaringi Liublino unijos vertinimai atskleidžia probleminę 1569m. Liublino unijos istoriografijos būklę bei įrodo, jog egzistuoja skirtingi požiūriai ir unijos vertinimai, taip pat paaiškėja, kad tebėra neišdiskutuotų, neatsakytų klausimų. Vienas jų - 1569 m. Liublino seime įvykdytas vienos suverenios valstybės - Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės - dalies teritorijos atskyrimas ir prijungimas prie kitos valstybės - Lenkijos Karalystės. Todėl šio straipsnio tikslas - parodyti ir įvertinti Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės teritorinio vientisumo suardymo 1569 m. problemos istoriografijos įdirbį, atskleisti jo spragas, bei paskatinti atlikti naujus tyrimus ir jų interpretacijas. Konstatuojama, jog Liublino uniją pateikiant kaip tautų sutarimo pavyzdį šių dienų Europai, 1569 m. Liublino seime pažeistas Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės teritorinis vientisumas negali likti išsamiai neišnagrinėtas ir neįvertintas. Siūloma vengti aiškinimų, jog 1569 m. nieko ypatingo neįvyko, tiesiog Lenkijos karalius ir Lietuvos didysis kunigaikštis Žygimantas Augustas aplinkybių paskatintas, nutarė kitai savo valdomai valstybei atiduoti pusę jos teritorijos. Siūloma išsamiai ištirti ir teisiškai įvertinti susiklosčiusią padėtį, monarcho, Lenkijos Karalystės ir Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės politinių bendruomenių laikysenas, priimtus sprendimus ir jų poveikį visam 1569 m. Liublino unijos procesui bei rezultatams; ši problema turėtų tapti ankstyvųjų naujųjų laikų Europos lyginamųjų studijų objektu. Contradictory evaluations regarding the Union of Lublin, which emerge in a modern public discourse, uncovers the problematic historiographic status of 1569 Union of Lublin and proves that different viewpoints and assessments of the Union exist, furthermore, it becomes clear that there are still some questions, which have not been discussed nor answered. One of them is in 1569 at the Parliament of Lublin carried-out separation of the part of the territory of one sovereign state – the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – and connecting it to another state – the Kingdom of Poland. The purpose of this article is to show and evaluate the historiographic work of the issue of distorting the territorial integrity of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1569, uncover its gaps and influence to carryout new researches and interpretations of them. It is to be stated, when the Union of Lublin is presented as an example of cooperation between a couple of nations for modern Europe, the territorial integrity of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which was breached in 1569 at the Parliament of Lublin, cannot remain thoroughly unexamined and unevaluated. It is proposed to avoid explanations that nothing extraordinary happened in 1569, just that the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania Zygmund II August influenced by circumstances decided to give to another state, which he governed, half of the territory of another state. It is proposed to thoroughly research and legally evaluate the situation, the positions of the Monarch and the political societies of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, as well as their influence on the whole 1569 Union of Lublin process and its results; this issue should become the object of the comparative studies of the early Modern Period of Europe.

LDK raštijoje Žalgiriui skirta reikšminga vieta. Tačiau mūšio vaizdavimas šioje raštijoje per ketvertą amžių keitėsi. Vienas ankstyviausių išlikęs Supraslio ir Nikiforovo nuorašuose. Sakmės pobūdžio pranešimas nusako Žalgirį kaip dviejų Gediminaičių bei jų valdomų lenkų ir lietuvių tautų mūšį su vokiečiais, kuriame pasiekta esminė pergalė: „sumušta visa vokiečių jėga“. 1519–1525 m. Bychoveco kronika Žalgirio pergalę priskyrė Vytautui ir lietuviams, nuvertindama Jogailos ir lenkų vaidmenį. Toks buvo atsakymas į 1519 ir 1521 m. išleistą pirmąją spausdintą Lenkijos istoriją – Motiejaus Miechoviečio Lenkų kroniką (Chronica Polonorum) – bei jos perpasakotą lietuvius niekinusį Jono Dlugošo Žalgirio mūšio aprašymą. Motiejus Strijkovskis pamėgino priešiškus lietuvių ir lenkų pasakojimus suderinti. 1575–1577 m. Slucke parašytoje eiliuotoje Lietuvos istorijoje mūšis iškeliamas kaip žūtbūtinis žygis už Lietuvos ir Lenkijos laisvę, už lietuvių ir lenkų tautų išlikimą. XVII a. perrašydamas Strijkovskio Kroniką, Albertas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius iškėlė ne Lietuvos bajorijos narsos jėgą, ne aukojimosi tėvynei motyvą, bet Dievo visagalybės idėją. Romantinė XIX a. istoriografija pavertė Žalgirį Vytauto bei lietuvių tautos didybės paveikslu. Nors skirtingų ideologinių siekių bei pasaulėžiūrinių nuostatų veikiamas, LDK istorinis pasakojimas, taip pat ir jį tęsęs XIX a. romantikų naratyvas, išsaugojo ir išplėtojo savarankišką Žalgirio mūšio aprašymą. LDK pasakojimas pavertė Žalgirį Lietuvos tautos tapatybei svarbiu simboliniu vaizdiniu, kurį perėmė modernią lietuvių tautą kūrusi romantinė istoriografija The Battle of Grunewald occupies a special position in the writings of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. However, the depiction of this battle in these writings changed over four centuries. One of the earliest versions was preserved in copies kept in Supraslis. A story-like notification described the Battle of Grunewald as a battle of two Gediminids and the Poles and Lithuanian subject to them against Germans, with the first being victorious. The Bychowiec Chronicle of 1519–1525 attributed the victory in the Battle of Grunewald to Vytautas and Lithuanians thus diminishing the role of Jogaila and Poles in the battle. Such was a response to the first publication of the history of Poland published in 1519 and 1521, i.e. Chronica Polonorum by Maciej Miechowita and its description of the Battle of Grunewald diminishing the role of Lithuanians in it. Maciej Stryjkowski tried to unite these two opposite Lithuanian and Polish versions. A poetical history of Lithuania wrote in Slutsk in 1575–1577 depicts the battle as a vital battle for the freedom of Poland and Lithuania and the survival of Lithuanians and Poles. In the 17th century, when rewriting the Stryjkowski’s chronicle, Albertas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius highlighted the idea of the God’s all mightiness. The romantic historiography of the 19th century turned the battle of Grunewald into the image of glory of Vytautas and Lithuanians. Although influenced by various ideological aspirations and worldviews, the historic narrative of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as well as the narrative of the romantic 19th century preserved and elaborated an independent description of the battle. The narrative of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania turned the battle of Grunewald into an important symbolic image for Lithuania.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiamas lietuvių požiūris į 1794 m. sukilimo vadą Tadą Kosciušką ir pateikiami jo kilmės bei tautiškumo priklausomybės vertinimai. Tie klausimai daugiausia dėmesio susilaukė tarp JAV lietuvių. Jie jautriai reagavo į JAV lenkų atvirus pareiškimus, jog JAV nepriklausomybės karo didvyris generolas Tadas Kosciuška buvo lenkiškos kilmės, Lenkijos pilietis. JAV lietuviai (J. Hertmanavičius ir J. Koncevičius-Končius) bandė parengti anglų kalba atskirą studiją, skirtą T. Kosciuškos lietuviškai kilmei įrodyti. Pagrindinis jų argumentas – pats T. Kosciuška laiškuose minėjo savo lietuvišką kilmę. Dėl neaiškių priežasčių tokios studijos ne tik anglų, bet ir lietuvių kalba mes iki šiol neturime. Tarybiniame laikotarpyje tautiškumo klausimas istorikų darbuose nebuvo aktualus. T. Kosciuškos lietuviškumas buvo siejamas su LDK pilietiškumu. Istorikas R. Jasas rinko medžiagą generolo biografijai ir jo ryšiams su Lietuva nušviesti, bet istoriko mirtis sutrukdė išleisti monografiją. Tarp Lietuvos istorikų vyrauja nuomonė, kad T. Kosciuška – gudų bajorų kilmės, bet iš LKD, o JAV gyvenančių lietuvių istorikų ir besidominčių istorija darbuose dominuoja teiginys, kad T. Kosciuška yra arba lietuvis, arba lietuviškos kilmės gudų bajoras iš LDK The article reviews the Lithuanians’ attitude towards Tadas Kosciuška (Kościuszko), the leader of 1794 rebellion as well as presents the estimation of his descent and nationality. These issues received close attention from the Lithuanians residing in the USA, especially during the pre-war period. They sensitively reacted towards the Polish emigrants’ explicit statements that the USA Independence War hero General Tadas Kosciuška was of Polish descent, a citizen of Poland. The American Lithuanians in their press, in their gatherings and in their reports to the USA authorities tried to deny the General’s Polish origin. There turned up quite a number of Kosciuška’s phony relatives from Lithuania to claim the General’s inheritance about which little was known. All these things sparked a keen interest in the General’s descent among the American Lithuanians. Therefore, they even attempted (e. g. J. Hertmanavičius, J. Koncevičius-Končius, A. Šalna) to prepare a detailed study in the English language to prove T. Kosciuška’s Lithuanian origin. This initiative was supported by the Lithuanian representatives in the USA, the main reason being the fact that T. Kosciuška himself mentioned his Lithuanian descent in some of his letters. Unfortunately, because of unknown reasons, we do not have this "Lithuanian" study either in the English or Lithuanian languages up to now. During the Soviet period, the issue of national identity was not appropriate in historians’ works as T. Kosciuška’s Lithuanian origin was associated with the citizenship of the Grand Duchy of Lithuanian (GDL). Historian R. Jasas collected the material about the General’s biography and his relations with Lithuania; however, the historian’s death terminated the research, and the monograph was not published. Some Lithuanian historians advocate the idea that T. Kosciuška is a Belarusian nobleman but from the GDL while Lithuanian historians from the USA are of the opinion that T. Kosciuška is either Lithuanian or a Belarusian nobleman of Lithuanian descent from the GDL. Unfortunately, it should be stated that the number of Lithuanian historians’ works, devoted to T. Kosciuška’s biography, his activity and relations with Lithuania, is regrettably and unforgettably low; we lag behind not only the Polish but also Belarusian historians in terms of researches conducted and scientific results published concerning the above mentioned issues

Straipsnyje siekiama apibūdinti lietuviškąją Žalgirio mūšio tyrinėjimo tradiciją, aptarti jos raidą, svarbesnes išvadas ir pasiekimus nuo pirmųjų Žalgirio mūšio vertinimų iki Žalgirio mūšio 600 metų jubiliejaus. Iš pateiktos istoriografinės apžvalgos daroma išvada, kad lietuvių istoriografijoje jau seniai Žalgirio mūšis suvoktas kaip epochinės reikšmės įvykis. Lietuvos istoriografija visada jautriai reaguodavo į bandymus sumenkinti Lietuvos kariuomenės ir Vytauto reikšmę Žalgirio mūšyje. Buvo visuotinai pripažįstamas reikšmingas lietuvių vaidmuo pradiniame ir baigiamajame mūšio etape, tačiau pasitraukimas ilgą laiką aiškintas dvejopai: kaip Lietuvos kariuomenės priverstinis atsitraukimas, po kurio sekė sėkmingas persirikiavimas ir grįžimas į mūšio lauką, arba kaip specialiai suplanuotas apgaulingo bėgimo manevras siekiant išardyti priešo rikiuotę. Pastaroji hipotezė galutinai įrodyta Svenui Ekdahliui suradus ir paskelbus apie tai kalbantį mūšio dalyvio laišką. Taip pat buvo nevienodai aiškinamas Jogailos vaidmuo: kartais vieninteliu mūšio vadu buvo laikomas Vytautas, o kartais tam tikras vaidmuo pripažįstamas ir Jogailai. Pastaruoju metu vienaip ar kitaip pripažįstamas abiejų vadų vaidmuo mūšio metu. Lietuvių istoriografija palyginti nedaug dėmesio skyrė kariuomenių skaičiaus įvertinimui. Vienintelės savarankiškesnės pastangos buvo susijusios su gana radikaliais mėginimais sumenkinti Lenkijos kariuomenės vaidmenį mūšyje. Tai buvo daroma įtemptų Lenkijos ir Lietuvos santykių fone, apie 1930 m. Kitais atvejais daugiausia pasirenkami užsienio istoriografijoje vyraujantys skaičiai. The Battle of Tannenberg (the Battle of Žalgiris, the Battle of Grunwald), the greatest and most significant battle in the medieval history of Lithuania, Poland and the Teutonic Order, since ancient times has been in the centre of multilingual historiographical researches in Middle and Eastern Europe. The authors, who wrote in Lithuanian, always devoted considerable attention to it; however, as the Lithuanian scientific historiography evolved later than in German and Russian linguistic contexts, the development of this historiography started later as well. The first estimates of the Battle of Tannenberg, made in the 19th century, prove that this battle attracted the Lithuanians' attention starting with the first stages of Lithuanian historiography; when the tradition of Lithuanian scientific historiography acquired a solid basis, it developed some features of originality. Polemics with the Polish historiography, strongly influenced by Jan Długosz's biased battle accounts, laid solid foundations for a more objective attitude to the Battle of Tannenberg; this approach was confirmed by further researches. However, namely the Lithuanian historiography of Tannenberg is less known in the international researches of the battle because of the following reasons. First of all, lack of solid, seminal works (except for Mečislovas Jučas' monograph and some science popular publications, Lithuanian historiography of the Battle of Tannenberg was mainly represented by articles); then, the language barrier should be taken into consideration as the works published in the Lithuanian language were less accessible to the international community, and, finally, lack of historiographic reviews and bibliography should be mentioned. Therefore, the aim of this article is to characterize the Lithuanian research tradition of the Battle of Tannenberg, to discuss the development of this tradition as well as to highlight important conclusions and achievements starting with the first estimates of this battle till its 600th anniversary. The presented historiography review helps to conclude that in Lithuanian historiography the Battle of Tannenberg is perceived as the event of epochal importance. Lithuanian historiography has always been sensitive to the attempts to diminish the importance of the Lithuanian army and Vytautas for the battle. The Lithuanians' significant contribution at the initial and final stages of the battle is recognized universally; however, the retreat received diverse evaluation: it was treated 1) as a forced retreat, followed by a successful reorganization and return to the battlefield and 2) as a specially planned tactical manoeuvre to break the enemy's battle line. The latter hypothesis was confirmed when Sven Ekdahl found and published the letter of one of the solders involved in the battle. Jogaila's (Jagiello) role was also explained differently: in some cases, Vytautas was considered to be the chief and the only army commander while in other cases Jogaila's significant military role was also emphasized. Lietuvos TSR mokslų akademijos Etnologijos instituto įkūrimas 1941 m. straipsnyje pateiktas kaip sovietinės okupacinės valdžios inspiruotas jos mokslo politikos žingsnis siekiant daryti ideologinę įtaką Lietuvos visuomenei. Sugretinama etnologijos mokslo padėtis Sovietų Sąjungoje, kaimyninėse šalyse ir Lietuvoje Antrojo pasaulinio karo išvakarėse bei pirmosios sovietinės okupacijos metais. Straipsnio tikslas: naudojant naujus Lietuvos mokslų akademijos archyvo duomenis aptarti XX a. pirmojoje pusėje susiklosčiusią Lietuvoje tradicinę etnologijos sampratą, sugretinti ją su etnologijos mokslo padėtimi SSRS ir apžvelgti Etnologijos instituto įkūrimą ir veiklą bei jos aplinkybes pirmosios sovietinės okupacijos metais. Article analyses the problem of coexistence and opposition between the occupation authorities and scientific officers in the occupied country. The circumstances of establishing the Institute of Ethnology in Lithuania in 1941 and its activities are viewed as the attempt of the Soviet occupation authorities to ideologically influence the society via the politics of science and the efforts of the society to make use of the Soviet rhetoric in order to sustain the local scholarly tradition important to the nation's culture. The article is based on the unpublished historic sources from the archive of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and other data. The establishment of the Institute of Ethnology of the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences and its short-term existence was related to the participants of World War II, the countries that occupied Lithuania – the Soviet Union and Germany. The Soviet period is still veiled in the historiography of ethnology. It was politically unacceptable to speak about the activities of the Institute in the Soviet times as a number of prominent scholars who worked there had emigrated. Besides, as of 1937 ethnology was no longer referred to as science in the USSR. Biographies of repatriated ethnologists contained records of their work in the institutions of independent Lithuania evading the fact that in the Soviet times those were incorporated into the Institute of Ethnology. The formation of ethnology in Lithuania up to the middle of the 20th century was strongly influenced by the development of the science in Western Europe. Lithuanian Scientific Society, founded in 1907, took the statutes of the Anthropological Society of Vienna and the Russian Imperial Geographical Society in St. Petersburg as the basis for its own statute and emphasized the necessity to foster ethnology, ethnography, archaeology, history and other sciences. Pranas Dovydaitis, from 1924 the editor of the journal of religious science Soter, published at the University of Lithuania (later renamed into Vytautas Magnus University), closely followed the news on ethnology from the Western world, extensively surveyed in the magazine the newest research and disputes regarding the methods and concepts of the science. On the eve of the first Soviet occupation, the differentiation of ethnological sciences which formed in the late 19th century was still in progress in Lithuania. It embraced theoretical ethnological studies and ethnology analogous to Polish ludoznawstwo and German Volkskunde. At times, overlapping branches of the study of national culture such as ethnological ethnography, folkloristics, art criticism, ethnomusicology and mythology analysed local ethno-cultural and social phenomena. Theoreticians Jonas Baldžius, Jonas Balys, Jonas Basanavičius and Pranas Dovydaitis sought wider cultural context and more extensive space for comparative analysis. In the Soviet Union the period of 1928-1938 was marked by ideological repressive struggle attempting to accommodate the fundamental scientific concepts related to ethnicity, ethnic particularity, cultural development, etc. to Marxism. Straipsnyje keliama vertybių ir šiuolaikinės literatūros kūrinių vertinimo problema. Postmodernizmas transformavo literatūros aksiologijos klasikinę sampratą. Sustiprėjo dėmesys pliuralistiniam vertybių aiškinimui, jų reliatyvumui ir atsitiktinumui, estetinių literatūros kūrinio kriterijų daugiamatiškumui. Postmodernių kūrinių vertinimo paradoksas: jie arba iš viso nevertinami, arba jiems taikomi klasikinės literatūros aksiologijos principai. Sudėtingai ir simbolinei šiuolaikinio literatūros vertybių pasaulio struktūrai pažymėti siūlomas archetipinis labirinto įvaizdis. Vertinimas interpretuojamas kaip išėjimas (kelio radimas) iš labirinto. Postmodernybės sąlygomis tai – vertybių individualumo ir atsitiktinumo simbolinės bei praktinės raiškos vieta. Remiamasi postmodernaus nacionalinio (rusų, lietuvių ir prancūzų) istorinio romano pavyzdžiais. Article is focused on the issue of values and evaluation of contemporary pieces of literature. Postmodernism transformed the classical conception of literature axiology. The regard towards pluralistic interpretation of values, their relativity and coincidence, as well as towards multidimensional aspect of aesthetic criteria of a piece of literature enhanced. The paradox of postmodernist pieces' evaluation is as follows: they are either not evaluated at all, or the principles of the classical literature axiology are applied. To denote a complex and symbolic structure of contemporary literary values an archetype image of labyrinth is offered. Evaluation is interpreted as the way out of labyrinth (finding out the path). Under the conditions of post-modernity it is the position of individuality of values and symbolic and practical expression of coincidence. The instances of postmodernist national (Russian, Lithuanian, French) historical novel are taken as the basic references.

Straipsnyje tiriama 1592 m. pasirodžiusios knygos „Cnotliwy Litwin“ autorystė. „Cnotliwy Litwin“ laikomas pirmuoju Lietuvos istoriografijoje teminiu istorinių dokumentų rinkiniu, kurį sudaro knygos rengėjo tekstas ir 10 dokumentų, pagrindžiančių Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės teises į Livoniją. Knyga yra anoniminė, todėl siekiama nustatyti jos autorystę. Albertas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius knygos autorystę klaidingai priskyrė Krizostomui Volodkevičiui. Jis negalėjo sukurti šio kūrinio, nes Volodkevičius mirė 1642 m. būdamas 51 metų amžiaus. Nustatyti autorystę pagelbėjo 1594 m. Vilniuje išspausdinta knyga „Dialiog ślachcica litewskiego prawdziwy wonjy inflantskiej...“. Joje aprašomi trys Stepono Batoro žygiai prieš Maskvą 1579-1581 m. Lyginamoji analizė parodė, kad abi knygas parašė tas pats autorius. 1594 m. knygoje autorius įrašė savo inicialus „E. P. Philalethes Lituaniae“. Tikėtina tai buvo Elijas Pielgrzymowskis - Venslovo Agripos įsūnis, kuriam jis užrašė savo biblioteką 1564 m. Žinoma, kad Pielgrzymowskis 1569 m. mokėsi Königsbero Universitete ir apie 1583 m. tapo karaliaus sekretoriumi. 1588 ir 1590 m. Žygimantas Vaza siuntė Pielgrzymowskį į Livoniją atlikti įvairias administracines užduotis. Tai paaiškina Livonijos reikalų išmanymą, kuriuo pasižymėjo „Cnotliwy Litwin“ autorius. Pielgrzymowskio autorystė priskiriama dar bent kelioms knygoms, todėl jis laikytinas vienu produktyviausių XVI a. pabaigos autorių Lietuvos Didžiojoje Kunigaikštystėje. The article deals with the authorship of a book "Cnotliwy Litwin", that appeared in 1592. "Cnotliwy Litwin" is considered to be the first thematic collection of historical documents in Lithuanian historiography, consisting of the author's text and 10 documents justifying the rights of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to Livonia. The book is anonymous, which is why the aim is to determine its authorship. Albertas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius mistakenly attributed the book to Chryzostom Wołodkiewicz. He could not have created this work because Wołodkiewicz died in 1642 at the age of 51. A book "Dialog szlachcica litewskiego prawdziwy wojny inflanckiej...", published in Vilnius in 1594, helped to established its authorship. It describes three crusades by Stephen Báthory to Moscow in 1579-1581. Comparative analysis has shown that both books were written by the same author. In 1594, the author wrote his initials "E. P. Philalethes Lituaniae". It probably was Elijah Pielgrzymowski - the adopted son of Wacław Agryppa, to whom he decided to leave his library in 1564. It is known that Pielgrzymowski studied at the University of Königsberg in 1569, and became king's secretary in around 1583. In 1588 and 1590, Sigismund Vasa sent Pielgrzymowski to Livonia to perform various administrative tasks. This explains the knowledge of the Livonian affairs, noticed in the writings of the author of "Cnotliwy Litwin". Pielgrzymowski's authorship is attributed to at least several books, and therefore he is considered to be one of the most productive authors of the end of 16th century in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Straipsnis tęsia autoriaus pradėtą XVI–XVIII a. Abiejų Tautų Respublikos (ATR) socialinės ekonominės istorijos analizę žvelgiant per dviejų konkuruojančių istoriografinių prieigų prizmę: vidines priežastis sureikšminančią tradicinę marksistinę koncepciją ir išorines priežastis pabrėžiančią neomarksistinę kapitalistinės pasaulio sistemos teoriją. Straipsnio tikslas yra sukonkretinti Vakarų Europos XI–XV a. manoro ir XVI–XVIII a. Vidurio Rytų Europos (ypač ATR) palivarko struktūrinius panašumus ir skirtumus marksistiniu bei neoinstitucionalistiniu požiūriais. Pirmą kartą istoriografijoje atlikta ši lyginamoji analizė neleidžia XVI–XVIII a. ATR palivarko ūkio kvalifikuoti nei kaip tipiško feodalinio ūkio (kuriuo laikytinas Viduramžių Vakarų Europos manoras), nei kaip tipiškos kapitalistinės įmonės. Vakarų Europos manoro sistema kaip ekonominis bei politinis vienetas buvo pagrįsta implicitine pono ir valstiečio mainų sutartimi, o Vidurio Rytų Europos palivarko sistema rėmėsi absoliučiu pono dominavimu valstiečiams. Palivarkas buvo tik ūkinis, o ne politinis vienetas. Be to, nors ir XI–XV a. Vakarų Europos manoras, ir XVI–XVIII a. Vidurio Rytų Europos palivarko ūkis plėtojo paprastąją prekinę gamybą, skyrėsi jų gamybos orientacija. Manoro ūkis buvo orientuotas pirmiausia į pono natūrinių poreikių tenkinimą. XVI–XVIII a. ATR palivarko ūkio gamybos paskirtis buvo prekinės produkcijos gamyba, kuri vis dėlto kvalifikuotina kaip viena iš pono lėšų kaupimo formų. Pastarasis bruožas neleidžia XVI–XVIII a. ATR palivarko ūkio traktuoti kaip kapitalistinės įmonės. The paper continues the analysis of social economic history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth of the 16th–18th c., started by the author, as viewed from the perspective of two competing historiographical approaches: the traditional Marxist concept that gives prominence to internal causes and the neo-Marxist capitalist world system theory that emphasises external causes. The paper aims to concretise the structural similarities and differences of Western European manor of the 11th–15th c. and Central-Eastern European (particularly the Commonwealth) folwark of the 16th–18th c. from the Marxist and neoinstitutionalist approaches. This comparative analysis, conducted in historiography for the first time, does not allow qualifying the folwark of the Commonwealth of the 16th–18th c. either as a typical feudal farm (like a Medieval Western European manor) or a typical capitalist enterprise. The system of a Western European manor as an economic and political unit was based on the implicit exchange agreement between the lord and the peasant, whereas the Central-Eastern European folwark system was based on absolute domination of the lord over peasants. The folwark was only an economic, not a political unit. Moreover, although both the 11th–15th c. Western European manor and the 16th–18th c. Central-Eastern European folwark developed a simple commodity production, their production orientation differed. The farm of the manor was primarily orientated to meet the lord’s subsistence needs. The purpose of the folwark of the Commonwealth was commodity production that is qualified as one of the forms of the lord’s fund accumulation. This feature does not allow treating the 16th–18th c. Commonwealth folwark farm as a capitalist enterprise.

Straipsnyje išsamiai analizuojama pagrindinių lietuvių politinių partijų ir ideologinių srovių (iki 1940 m.) istoriografija, svarbiausios įvairiu laikotarpiu išleistos apie šias politines partijas ir ideologines sroves publikacijos, apibendrinami aptariamų tyrimų rezultatai, iškilusios problemos ir jų priežastys. Daroma išvada, kad pirmiausia dėl politinių priežasčių lietuvių politinėms partijoms ir ideologinės srovėms (iki 1940 m.) išskirtinis dėmesys pradėtas rodyti tik per pastaruosius dvidešimt metų. The article gives a comprehensive analysis of historiography of the main Lithuanian political parties and ideological movements (before 1940), the key publications released on the political parties and ideological movements under analysis in different periods; it summarises the results of research under discussion, the arising problems and their causes. A conclusion in drawn that there was essentially no professional research of Lithuanian political parties and ideological movements (before 1940) up to the Lithuanian national revival at the end of the 1980s. Such a situation was determined by objective reasons: during the interwar authoritarian regime oppositional political parties, with the exception of the ruling Lithuanian Nationalist Union, were openly ignored and even officially banned in 1936. No objective research of political parties and movements could be possible in the years of the Soviet occupation, when the Soviet government manipulated the Lithuanian history by all possible means. Hence, the research carried out in the Soviet era has little enduring value. Even though the main political parties and movements which had previously functioned in the independent Lithuania revived their activities in exile after World War II, the previous disagreements, in particular the privileged position of the nationalist movement during the authoritarian regime renewed the rat-race among political parties in exile. The said factors played a negative role in the writing of history on political parties and movements. Thus, the books dedicated to an individual party or ideological movement which were published in exile exaggerated the past of own party or movement, by simultaneously degrading other political movements. Besides, the key party documentation had remained in the occupied Lithuania. The interest in the Lithuanian political parties and ideological movements before 1940 has considerably increased in several recent years. After the restoration of independence, most attention was paid to the oldest political force - the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party - and the origins of parties in general, as well as their activities in the early 20th century, whereas in the second decade of independence most attention was paid to the activities of political parties and movements of the First Republic of Lithuania (1918-1940). Most research was carried out on the ideological political movements of varpininkai peasant populists and Christian democracy of that period; the nationalist movement has received least attention of researchers to this day. The most up-to-date historical research studies focusing on domestic and international policy of the parties under analysis were written using extensive base of sources; in individual cases, party activities are compared with other political movements functioning in Europe at that time. It is a reason to believe that we will see comprehensive research studies in the form of dissertations or their monographs on the activities of political parties and ideological movements in the Independent Lithuania (1918-1940) in the near future.

Publikuojamas Livonijos dokumentas, fiksuojantis 1545 metų Livonijos ir Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės sienos patikrinimo aplinkybes, priskirtinas sienų patikrinimo ir atnaujinimo dokumentų kategorijai. Jį sudaro dvi 1545 metais datuojamos dalys, atskirų sienų atkarpų aprašai ir bendras šalių sienos patikrinimo aprašas. Neaišku, dėl ko susiklostė „eklektiška“ dokumento struktūra. Skelbiamas šaltinis yra nuorašo nuorašas, todėl galima manyti, jog raštininkas, perrašinėdamas dokumentus, galėjo pats juos „sujungti“ į vieną. Kita vertus, matyti, kad dokumento pirmojoje dalyje pirmą kartą pateikti abu „Vaišvilto sienos“ ir „Šedbaro sienos“ atkarpų aprašai, nors abu yra skirtingų laikotarpių. Jais, kaip tam tikrais ankstesnes sienas liudijančiais aprašais, galėjo atitinkamose institucijose naudotis Livonijos pareigūnai. Ypatinga skelbiamo dokumento reikšmė Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės ir Livonijos sienų tyrinėjimams yra šaltinyje plačiai aprašomi sienos ženklai. Minimi akmenys su iškaltais Livonijos kryžiais, ženklais pažymėti ąžuolai. Drūkšių ežero saloje buvo pastatytas didelis akmeninis postamentas – „skulptūra“, pažymėtas kryžium. Sienos gairę žymėjusiame akmenyje minimas iškaltas Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės herbo raitelis – vytis ir Livonijos kryžiai. Šaltinyje yra ir ikonografinių sienų ženklinimo duomenų. Apraše sienos gairių apylinkėse dažnai minimi toponimai, piliakalniai, ant jų net minimos buvusios šventyklos. Publikuojamas dokumentas yra vertingas istorinės geografijos ir kartografijos šaltinis. This is the publication of 1545 the borderline audit between Livonia and the Great Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) reported by the Livonian officers. Such verification documents containing an explicit borderline description are infrequent. Unilateral line reviews are usual in sovereign, office correspondence with a neigh bur state, informing the latter about the practice that had been under taken. Border marks, such as stones with incused Livonian crosses or the GDL blazon horseman Vytis confer to the publication of this document an exceptional value in Livonia and GDL borderline studies. Specifically, iconographic information and the depicted boarder mark "sculpture" are particularly important to the researchers. The document contains facts about the border marks deranged by the GDL inhabitants (it was common to blame them by on damaging the other side), but more important is the fact that the ways of damaging are also mentioned; for instance, marks made on trees were burnt. Such records are especially rare. The document contains toponymic and geographical information as well: the mound names by the borderline and even the temple on the one of the mound are mentioned. With all this in mind, the publication becomes a great asset in historical geography and cartography studies.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama marginalijų samprata, apibrėžtis ir tyrimų istoriografija. Siekiama nustatyti marginalijų šaltiniotyrinės bazės susiformavimą ir vykdomų tyrimų kryptis. Išskiriamos trys marginalijų apibrėžtys: kodikologinė, poligrafinė ir „pogamybinė“. Kodikologiškai ir poligrafiškai marginalijos apibrėžiamos kaip knygos gamybos metu atsiradę, funkcinę prigimtį turintys pagalbiniai informaciniai įrašai, tekstai ir ženklai, esantys už knygos pagrindinio teksto. „Pogamybinis“ požiūris telkiasi prie neapibrėžto turinio marginalijų, kurios atsirado funkcionuojant knygai visuomenėje. Marginalijų šaltiniotyrinė bazė pradėjo formuotis XIX a. pradžioje Didžiojoje Britanijoje, o Lietuvoje XX a. 6-ajame dešimtmetyje. Šaltiniotyra daugiausia nuveikė pirminio fiksavimo srityje, žinias apie marginalijas iš pradžių žymėta korteliniuose kataloguose, vėliau senųjų spaudinių ir elektroniniuose kataloguose. Dalis jų publikuota nuorašais ir faksimilėmis. Istoriškai susiformavo trys pagrindinės marginalijų tyrimų kryptys: filologinė, istorinė ir knygotyrinė (suvokiant knygos istoriją kaip jos dalį). Šiuo metu didžiausią įdirbį tiriant marginalijas yra pasiekę Didžiosios Britanijos, JAV ir Rusijos mokslininkai. Marginalijos pasitelkiamos poligrafijos, kodikologijos, skaitymo istorijos, knygos kultūros ir knygos meno tyrimams. Three definitions of marginalia are distinguished: codicological, polygraphic, and "postmanufaturing". Codicologically and polygraphically marginalia are defined as additional information records which appear during the book production process. Marginalia are texts and signs (and miniatures) of a functional nature, which are usually placed behind the main text of the book. The "postmanufacturing" attitude focuses on the marginalia which have an indefinite content and which appear in the process of book functioning in society. The development of marginalia scientific studies started at the beginning of the 19th century in Great Britain, meanwhile in Lithuania it started in the sixth decade of the 20th century. In the source studies, most has been achieved in the field of initial fixing. Information about marginalia was first recorded in card catalogues, later in old prints and electronic catalogues. Half of them are published as duplicates and facsimiles. Historically, three main marginalia research trends have formed: philological, historical and book science (perceiving book history as its part). Currently, the largest work in investigating marginalia is done by researchers from Great Britain, the USA and Russia. Marginalia are invoked in the investigation of polygraphy, codicology, reading history, book culture and book art. In Lithuania, more researches in history of reading, book culture, book art, records and sign history are conducted. Historiography development possibilities are intended for the research of library, bookbindery, book trade history and biographistic study.

Straipsnyje siekiama atskleisti literatūrinį Jano Zamojskio, kariuomenės vado Livonijos kare, paveikslą. R. Heidensteino (1584) sukurtas Hetmano personažas veikale „De bello Moscovitico commentariorum libri sex“ taip pat Jano Kochanowskio poezijos („O Statecznym słudze Rzeczypospolitej“, „Epithalamion abo Pieśń weselna na gody Kanclerza W. Kor. z Gryzeldą Batorówną“) veikėjo paveikslas akivaizdžiai įkvėpti Zamojskio asmenybės. Straipsnyje siekiama išryškinti panegirinį Zamojskio paveikslo aspektą, atskleisti humanistinių topų vaidmenį vaizduojant lietuvių-lenkų kariuomenę, taip pat išanalizuoti rašytojų komunikacines strategijas. Tiek karo, tiek ir paties Zamojskio paveikslai vėlyvojo Renesanso humanistų kūriniuose gretinami su šiuolaikinės istorijos žiniomis apie vadinamojo Maskvos karo eigą. This study attempts to define the literary image of Jan Zamoyski as a military leader in the Livonian War. Hetman's image that appears in De bello Moscovitico commentariorum libri sex by Reinhold Heidenstein (1584) or in Jan Kochanowski's poetry (O Statecznym słudze Rzeczypospolitej, Epithalamion abo Pieśń weselna na gody Kanclerza W. Kor. z Gryzeldą Batorówną) is the creation of writers particularly inspired by Zamoyski. This article aims to depict panegyrical conventions shaping Zamoyski's image, to present the influence of the humanistic topos on the creation of the image of the Lithuanian-Polish army, and to define the writers' communication strategies (favourable to Zamoyski). The image of both the war and Zamoyski in the works of the late Renaissance humanists is countered by the contemporary historical knowledge about the course of the "Moscow War"

Šio straipsnio išeities taškas yra aktualus probleminis klausimas – kokia viduramžių ir jų kautynių svarba ir vertė nacionalizmo epochos visuomenės sąmonėje ir istorinėje kultūroje? Pasitelkus tarpdisciplininės prieigos (istoriografijos, literatūrologijos, kultūros studijų) teikiamas galimybes, ieškoma atsakymo pirmiausia lietuvių istoriografijos, istorinės kultūros ir visuomenės istorinės atminties manifestacijų tyrimo pagrindu. Viduramžių lietuvių mūšių ir Durbės mūšio tyrinėjimo bei interpretacijos XIX–XX a. istorija nagrinėjama plačiame teminiame ir probleminiame lauke. Istoriografiškai orientuojantis į ilgosios trukmės (longue durée) struktūrinius pokyčius, atskirai sustojama prie istorijos ir viduramžių mūšių vaidmens tautinių judėjimų lauke, lietuvių istoriografijos bendrųjų slinkčių ir transformacijų interpretuojant Durbės mūšį, lietuvių visuomeninės kaitos ir Durbės mūšio vietos lietuvių istorinėje kultūroje. Remiantis istoriografine, literatūrologine, kultūrinės istorijos medžiaga, formuluojama Durbės mūšio vaizdinio kaitos, reikšmės ir vietos lietuvių visuomeninės atminties architektūroje hipotezė. The article focuses on a relevant problematic issue: the importance and value of the Middle Ages and their battles for the historical culture and for the consciousness of society of the nationalism era. In order to answer the question - firstly, from the perspective of Lithuanian historiography, historical culture, and the manifestations of the historical memory of the society - we invoke the potential of an interdisciplinary approach (i.e., historiography, literature, and cultural studies). The 19th-20th c. history of the research into and the interpretations of the Lithuanian Medieval battles, including the battle of Durbe, are studied in a wide thematic and problematic context. Taking a historiographical orientation towards the long term (longue duree) structural changes, we make a stop at the history and the position of the Medieval battles in the context of national movements. We also pay attention to the transformations of Lithuanian historiography which occur in the interpretations of the battle of Durbe in the Lithuanian historical culture. The hypothesis of the changes of the images, the importance, and the position of the battle of Durbe battle is formulated on the basis of the materials of historiography, literature studies, and cultural history.

Straipsnyje analizuojamos vokiečius ir lietuvius integravusios reikšmės, apibrėžusios regioninį Prūsijos Lietuvos patriotizmą ir sudariusios šio regiono atminimo kultūros pagrindą XIX a. - XX a. pr. Aiškinamasi, kokiu pagrindu XIX ir XX a. sandūroje dalis Prūsijos lietuvių ėmė formuoti alternatyvias reikšmes, pagrįstas lietuvišku didžiuoju istoriniu pasakojimu ir orientuotas į visų Prūsijos lietuvių etninio savitumo palaikymą ir jų atskyrimą nuo vokiečių. Kadangi pagrindiniu alternatyvių reikšmių šaltiniu tapo Prūsijos Lietuvoje kurtas lietuviškasis istorinis pasakojimas, straipsnyje išsamiai nagrinėjama pastarojo struktūra ir jos formavimosi įtakos. Autorius sprendžia klausimą, ar Prūsijos Lietuvoje susidarė alternatyvi atminimo kultūra, besiremianti lietuviškajame istoriniame pasakojime įtvirtinta reikšmių sistema ir pasižyminti savomis ceremonijų, ritualų ir paminklų statybos praktikomis The paper analyses particular meanings which integrated the Germans and Lithuanians living in Prussian Lithuania, defined their regional patriotism, and constituted the fundamentals of the regional culture of remembrance in the 19th and the early 20th c. It also examines the circumstances which, at the turn of the 20th c, gave an opportunity for part of Prussian Lithuanians to create alternative meanings, based on the Lithuanian historical master narrative, and encouraged Prussian Lithuanians to maintain their ethnic peculiarity and to support their distinction from Germans. Since Lithuanian historical narrative, created in Prussian Lithuania, became a source of alternative meanings, its structure, as well as the sources of its formation, is exhaustively analysed in the article. The author tries to resolve the issue whether the alternative culture of remembrance, based on the structure of meanings which were consolidated in the Lithuanian historical narrative and characterized by its own ceremonies, rituals, and monument erection practices, had formed in Prussia Lithuania

The main attention in the article is paid to the documents from Lithuanian Metrica concerning the functioning of the institute of “staryna” [old times] in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. A short historiographical review and analysis of the group of public nature sources were made in particular. The following documents belong to the group of the public nature sources: lists/charters [lyst/ hramota], privileges, confirmations, liberties documents [vol’nost’], lease agreements and diplomatic acts. The judicial documents represented by cases [sprava], adjournment of cases, sentences [vyrok/dekret/ukhvala] were studied too. The source study analysis shows that the examined groups of public and judicial documents contain direct or indirect appeals to the institute of “staryna”.

Vos prieš metus Minske išleista viena iš pažiūros kukli knyga niekaip negalėjo likti nepastebėta XIX a. tyrėjų, o ir šiaip istorinės literatūros mėgėjų, juolab Lietuvoje. Jau vien todėl, kad knygos pavadinime fiksuotas Vilniaus vardas, o viršelius puošia Jono Kazimiero Vilčinskio „Album de Wilna“ vaizdai. Pagrindiniai šio leidinio herojai – du mūsų kultūros, mokslo bei politikos istorijoje ryškūs vardai, du Imperatoriškojo Vilniaus universiteto profesoriai – Joachimas Lelewelis (1786-1861) ir Ivanas Loboika (1786-1861). Knygoje publikuojami du skirtingu laiku rašyti garsiąją filomatų ir filaretų, taigi iš dalies ir Vilniaus universiteto likvidavimo bylą, gvildenantys tekstai – J. Lelewelio ir I. Loboikos prisiminimai. Kitaip tariant, ši ne Lietuvoje leista ir knygos sudarytojo Aleksandro Fedutos žodžiais, pirmiausia rusakalbiui skaitytojui skirta knyga, gana svarbi ir mums. Ir ne tik dėl perdėm lietuviškos, vis dar aktualumo neprarandančios vadinamosios universitetinės tematikos, ne tik dėl originalios knygos struktūros, t. y. gana netikėtos dviejų asmenybių – „protingo lenko ir protingo ruso, žmonių sąžiningų ir padorių, J. Lelewelio ir I. Loboikos, palikusių palikuonims įvykusios tragedijos liudijimus“, sugretinimo, bet ir dėl antrosios knygos dalies – pirmą kartą pilnai skelbiamų I. Loboikos prisiminimų. Lyginant su jau anksčiau ne kartą publikuotu ir itin dažnai mokslinėje literatūroje cituojamu J. Lelewelio kūriniu, šio anksčiau tik fragmentiškai žinomo istorijos šaltinio paskelbimas laikytinas tam tikra moksline sensacija. Knyga ne be priekaištų. Bet klaidų ir netikslumų pasitaiko visuose, ypač kolektyviniuose darbuose, ir būtų neteisinga ir netgi negarbinga akcentuoti tik juos. Apskritai leidinys gerai apgalvotas, turi savo tikslą, savo idėją, nors diskutuotiną. One seemingly modest book, published in Minsk hardly a year ago, could not remain unnoticed by the 19th c. researchers and fans of historical literature, especially in Lithuania. The title of the book mentions Vilnius and its covers are illustrated by the pictures from Jonas Kazimieras Vilčinskis’ “Album de Wilna” [Album of Vilnius]. The main characters are two prominent personalities in our cultural, scientific and political history, professors of the Imperial Vilnius University – Joachim Lelewel (1786–1861) and Ivan Loboiko (1786–1861). The book publishes two texts – the memoirs of Lelewel and Loboiko – written at a different time and analysing the famous Philomath-Filaret, hence partially Vilnius University liquidation case. In other words, this book, which was published outside Lithuania and primarily targeted at the Russian audience, according to its compiler Alexander Feduta, is rather important for us too. Not only due to its Lithuanian university topic, which is still relevant, and not only due to its original structure, i.e. a rather unexpected comparison of two personalities, but also due to the second part of the book which for the first time fully publishes the memoirs of Loboiko. Compared to Lelewel’s work that had been previously published for many times and very often cited in scientific literature, the publication of this historical source, which had been previously known only fragmentally, is considered a scientific sensation. The book is not flawless. However, mistakes and inaccuracies are present in all, particularly collective, works, and it would be wrong and even disrespectful to point these out. The publication is generally well thought out, has its aim and idea, although a disputable one.

Lietuvos kultūros istorijos knygų – Mikalojaus Vorobjovo monografijos Vilniaus menas (Kaunas, 1940) – sukūrimo ir skaitymo istoriografinis bei kultūrinis kontekstas. Straipsnis išryškina Vorobjovo pažiūrų, idėjų, darbų krypčių ir rašymo būdų sąsajas su vokiečių, iš dalies ir lenkų menotyros mokyklomis, atskleidžia, kaip talentingo dailės istoriko profesinius interesus ir kai kurias įžvalgas veikė istorinės aplinkybės ir politiniai tikslai. This article discusses one of the most legendary 20th century books on the cultural history of Lithuania - Vilnius Art (Vilniaus menas, Kaunas, 1940), a monograph by Nikolaj Worobiow and the historiographic and cultural context that led to its creation and reception. The book was published under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and was intended to help the citizens of the independent Lithuania to intellectually and emotionally "retrieve" the cultural heritage of the historical capital. The book did not lose its relevance during the Soviet times as it allowed its readers to experience a link with the lost epoch of independence and presented a portrait of a city of ideal beauty. It was for these reasons that Worobiow, who had also written other important texts (for example, monograph M. K. Čiurlionis, der Litauische Maler und Musiker, 1938), was firstly known and estimated as the author of Vilnius Art. The article uncovers the prehistory of Worobiow's acquaintance with Vilnius architecture. Baroque - the most distinct style of Vilnius - was at the centre of Worobiow's professional interest while he was writing the dissertation Die Fensterformen Dominikus Zimmermanns at Munich University. This article discloses the connections between Worobiow's attitudes and ideas, the directions of his works and his approach to writing within the German (firstly, his lecturer and supervisor Wilhelm Pinder), and partly Polish, schools of art studies. It also reveals how the professional interest and some insights of this talented art historian were affected by historical circumstances and political aims. During the years of Nazi occupation, Worobiow nurtured his intentions to publish an improved Vilnius guide book. He also began collecting material for a key work ' an academic study of Vilnius architecture. When preparing his study concerning the work of Johann Cristoph Glaubitz (c. 1700-1767), he attempted to combine his authentic admiration for the talented artist's works with the conjuncture required when searching for German roots in Baltic art and architecture, or more specifically, Lithuanian art and architecture. At the end of this article the conclusion is made that in the present day this book is more illuminating as a mirror of its author and his environment than it is as a "spiritual portrait" of Vilnius. The book Vilnius Art is not only a symbolic retrieval of Vilnius, it is also a work which allowed its readers to sense the European dimension of the interwar Lithuanian culture. The latter was developed and deepened by the colleagues of Worobiow, the art historians and critics Jurgis Baltrušaitis, Halina Kairiūkštytė- Jacinienė, Julija Maceinienė, and the entire pleiad of philosophers and intellectuals of the new generation. It was not only the attraction of an unknown Vilnius, but also the obvious cultural potency of Worobiow's generation, which covered Vilnius Art with a legendary aura. This aura ensured that the book, which was intended for a wide readership, remained relevant for more than half a century. It was a book which promised the ripening of intellectual upheaval.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiamos šiuolaikinio lietuvių ir latvių istorinio romano tendencijos, aptariami realistiniai romanai, įprasminantys tikrus istorinius įvykius, moderniajam romanui būdingos istorinės tiesos interpretacijos, siekiant naujai perrašyti žinomus faktus, bei postmodernistinės istoriografinės metafikcijos. Lietuvių ir latvių literatūras suartina rašytojų pastangos aktualizuoti praeities istoriją kaip svarbų dabarties kultūros dėmenį, pabrėžti nedalomą jų ryšį ir nacionalinių idėjų tęstinumą. The article reviews the tendencies of a modern Lithuanian and Latvian historic novel and discusses realistic novels which contain real historic events and interpretations of historic truth which are characteristic to a modern novel in order to rewrite already known facts and post-modern historiographic metafictions. Lithuanian and Latvian literature gets closer the effort of writers to analyse the history of the past as an important elements of nowadays culture and to emphasize its inseparable relation and the continuation of national ideas. The relevance of the historic novel reveals a new creative thinking stage of the Baltic nations and historic and literary relations characteristic to the epoch of a “new historicism”. History remains a relevant element of all modern novels; in Lithuanian and Latvian literature, a historic novel remains a characteristic and relevant type of a novel which acquires new colours. In Lithuanian and Latvian literature similar artistic concepts of a historic novel and models of works are noticed. A classic realistic historical novel which intends to refresh a real historical truth remains important; in a popular novel, it is impressively joined with the flashes of imagination and fantasy which is characteristic to artistic works. Lithuanian and Latvian authors eagerly developed a popular form of the adventurous historical novel. At this time, authors' effort to interpret historical events into a modern way which becomes more and more important marks the search of new valuable relations with the history. In novels where post-modern historical metafictions prevail, it is intended to decentre and expose a traditional perception of history and establish subjectively perceived truths.

Italų humanistas, diplomatas, istorikas ir rašytojas Enėjas Silvijus Piccolominis (1405–1464, nuo 1458 metų Romos popiežius Pijus II) yra neblogai lietuvių skaitytojui žinomas autorius. Tačiau platesniam skaitytojų ratui mažiau yra žinomi po italų humanisto raštus išsibarstę Žalgirio mūšio aprašymai. Čia publikuojamas Piccolominio tekstas „Apie Livoniją [ir apie Prūsus]“, kuris žinomas kaip veikalo „De Europa“ dalis. Šis fragmentas sudaro visos publikacijos šerdį. Taip pat skelbiami du smulkesni tekstai – 1454 metų vasarą rašytas Piccolominio laiškas Varadino vyskupui Jonui ir veikalo „Apie karaliaus Alfonso posakius ir darbus“ (1456), fragmentas. Publikuojami ir du XV amžiaus antrosios pusės pasakojimai, sukompiliuoti sekant Piccolominio Žalgirio mūšio aprašymu. Jie iki šių dienų išliko vadinamuosiuose Chigių (Kidžių) ir Getingeno rankraščiuose. Šiuose pasakojimuose aiškiai juntamas ir lenkiškos tradicijos bei propagandos poveikis. Tačiau jie yra svarbūs norint suvokti istoriografinį ir kultūrinį kontekstą, kuriame buvo sukurta Jono Vislisiečio poema „Prūsų karas“ (1516) ir Plačiojo Lietuvos metraščio (Bychoveco kronikos) pasakojimas apie Žalgirio kautynes. Nors Piccolominio piešiamas mūšio vaizdas lietuvių skaitytojui nėra malonus, vertėtų atkreipti dėmesį į tai, kad italų istorikas buvo santykinai nešališkas autorius. Savaime aišku, jis buvo palankesnis Vokiečių ordinui, tačiau tai buvo žvilgsnis iš Europos centro – Italijos ir Vokietijos (Piccolominis tarnavo popiežiui ir imperatoriui). Svarbu tai, kad Piccolominis nesimpatizavo nei lenkams, nei lietuviams. Italian humanist, diplomat, historian and writer Enea Silvio Piccolomini (1405-1464, Roman Pope Pius II since from 1458) is an author quite well known to Lithuanian readers. But a wider circle of readers are less familiar with the descriptions of the Battle of Grunwald scattered all over the writings of the Italian humanist. The text "About Livonia [and about the Prussians]" by Piccolomini, which is known as a part of "De Europa" work, is published here. This fragment is the heart of the whole publication. Two smaller texts - Piccolomini's letter written in summer 1454 to Varadin Bishop John and a fragment of the writing called "About the Sayings and Works of King Alfonso are also published here. Two stories dating back to the second half of the 15th Century, compiled following the description of the Battle of Grunwald by Piccolomini, are also published. They have survived till nowadays in so-called Chigi and Gottingen manuscripts. The influence of Polish tradition and propaganda is clearly observed in these stories. But they are important in order to understand the historiographical and cultural context, in which The Prussian War (Bellum Prutenum) (1516) by Joannes Visliciensis and the story about the Battle of Grunwald in the Broadest Lithuanian Manuscript (Bychowiec Chronicle) were created. Though the battle depicted by Piccolomini is not pleasant to the Lithuanian reader, it should be noted that the Italian historian was relatively unbiased author. It goes without saying, that he was more favourably disposed towards the Teutonic Knights, but it was a glance from the centre of Europe - Italy and Germany (Piccolomini served the Pope and Emperor). Important thing is that Piccolomini did not sympathise either Poles or Lithuanians.

2011-aisias sukanka 75-eri metai, kai pasirodė žymus nepriklausomos Lietuvos istoriografijos paminklas – Adolfo Šapokos redaguota „Lietuvos istorija“. Knyga parengta Švietimo ministerijos užsakymu kaip vadovėlis aukštesniosioms gimnazijoms klasėms. A. Šapoka ir jo bendradarbiai rengdami vadovėlį susidūrė su nemažais sunkumais: daug Lietuvos istorijos problemų tuo metu istorikai dar nebuvo palietę, kaip nebuvo bendros koncepcijos ir istorijos sintezės. Redaktorius norėjo ir siekė, kad „Lietuvos istorija“ būtų ne tik vadovėlis gimnazijoms, bet ir apibendrinamasis istorijos veikalas visuomenei. Tą siekį jis ir išdėstė rašte Švietimo ministerijai. Rašto tekstas publikuojamas šio leidinio jubiliejaus proga 2011 will be the year when 75 years ago Adolfas Šapoka's edited "The History of Lithuania", a famous historiographic monument of the independent Lithuania, was published. The book was initiated by the Ministry of Education as a textbook for the senior forms of Gymnasiums. Šapoka and his colleagues, working on this textbook, faced significant challenges, e. g. many problems of the then Lithuanian history had not been identified and confronted; also, there did not exit a general concept of the Lithuanian history. The editor's concern was the beneficial effect of this textbook both on Gymnasiums' pupils and society. Šapoka clearly defined this aim in the letter to the Ministry of Education. The text published in the article and addressed to the Ministry of Education is the authors' request to evaluate their work

Studijoje aptariamos dvi mokyklinės istorijos knygas, kurių autorius buvo žinomas lietuvių istorikas Juozas Jurginis (1909–1994). Tai – „Lietuvos TSR istorijos“ vadovėlis, leistas 1957–1961 m., ir „Lietuvos TSR istorijos skaitiniai“, leisti 1958–1961 m. Dėl šių mokomųjų knygų 1961 m. rugpjūčio 16 d. buvo priimtas Tarybų Sąjungos komunistų partijos centro komiteto (TSKP CK) nutarimas „Apie rimtas klaidas J. Jurginio vadovėlyje „Lietuvos TSR istorija“ ir „Lietuvos TSR istorijos skaitiniuose“. Į 1957–1961 m. J. Jurginio tekstus moksleiviams, praėjus pusei šimtmečio, vertėtų pažvelgti iš laiko perspektyvos, matant, kaip istorijos ratas pasisuko toliau. Studijoje siekiama pateikti tas septintojo dešimtmečio pradžios aplinkybes ir foną, kai J. Jurginio vadovėlinė literatūra susilaukė dėmesio Maskvoje ir buvo svarstoma Kremliuje. Šis faktas studijoje įprasminamas platesniame sovietmečio Kremliaus vykdomos centrinės vadovėlių politikos ir istorijos konceptualizavimo kontekste. Istorijos vadovėlių tyrimai balansuoja tarp istoriografijos, istorijos politikos ir istorijos didaktikos tyrimų lauko. Ši kompleksinė problematika studijoje nagrinėjama remiantis vadovėlių tyrimo metodinėmis prieigomis, kurios užsienio valstybėse jau turi ilgametes tradicijas, o Lietuvoje taip pat formuojasi į atskirą perspektyvią tyrimo kryptį. The study discusses two historical textbooks which author was Juozas Jurginis (1909–1994), a well-known Lithuanian historian. It is a textbook “Lietuvos TSR istorija” [Lithuanian SSR history] published in 1957–1961 and “Lietuvos TSR istorijos skaitiniai” [Lithuanian SSR history readings] published in 1958–1961. Because of these textbooks on 16 August 1961 a decision “on serious mistakes in Jurginis textbooks “Lietuvos TSR istorija” and “Lietuvos TSR istorijos skaitiniai”” by the central committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was made. After a half of century the students should have a look to Jurginis' texts of 1957–1961 from time perspective taking into account how the history was changed later. The study intends to present the circumstances and background of the 7th decade when Jurginis' textbooks attracted attention in Moscow and were considered in Kremlin. This fact acquires the meaning in a context of history conceptualisation and a wider textbook policy implemented by the Soviet Kremlin. The researches on the textbooks of history balance between historiography, history politics and history didactics. In the study, this complex problem is analysed with regard to methodological availabilities of textbook researches which have long-term traditions in other states and is still making a separate perspective research trend in Lithuania. New data and generalisation is based not only on ordinary researches of textbooks but on the material in Lithuanian Special Archives (LSA), the recently declassified publications of archival sources in Russia, and the works of historians in the USA, Germany and other Western countries.

Priešais Gedimino kalną esančioje Sapieginės kalvyno dalyje kultūrinis sluoksnis ėmė formuotis XIII–XIV a., kai prasidėjo Vilniaus kaip kunigaikščio rezidentinio miesto kūrimasis. Nepertraukiama žmogaus veikla kalvyne tęsėsi iki XIV–XV a. ribos, po to aptinkami kolapso pėdsakai ir virš jo sporadiški XV a. I pusės radiniai, rodantys, kad dar buvo pavieniai mėginimai gyvenimą atkurti, bet tai nebuvo masinis reiškinys ir neužilgo šios pastangos užgeso. Kultūrinio sluoksnio chronologija ir turinys bei vietovės geografinė-orografinė padėtis leidžia šią kalvyno dalį sieti su istoriniuose šaltiniuose minimu Kreivuoju miestu (Kreivąja pilimi), kuris 1390 09 16 per kryžiuočių puolimą buvo sudegintas. Mes siekiame įsitikinti Kreivojo miesto lokalizavimo kalvyne pagrįstumu ir praplėsti žinias apie jo dydį, formą, gyvenimo ir gynybos sąlygas, planinę sandarą bei suvokti jo paskirtį, reikšmę ir įtaką viso Vilniaus kontekste. Teritoriją, apie kurią kalbame, sudaro keli kalvyno segmentai: Plikasis kalnas, Stalo kalnas, Šiaurės ir Pietų amfiteatrai. Ši teritorija, įskaitant vidinius šlaitus ir griovas, apima 12 ha plotą. Didžiąją jos dalį sudaro įvairaus statumo ir konfigūracijos šlaitai, pakopiškai besileidžiantys į senas raguvas, laipsniškai, amfiteatro pavidalu, kylantys sufozinių cirkų pakraščiais. Užstatymui tinkamo ploto šiandien joje yra apie 4,2 ha. Pagal viduramžių miestų plotus tai gana reikšmingas dydis, rodantis, kad čia galėjo būti įsikūrusi didelė Vilniaus dalis, kurios reikšmės nesame suvokę. Straipsnyje remiantis gamtos istorijos tyrimu, analizuojamas ir vertinamas XIV a. buvo Sapieginės kalvyno dalies, esančios priešais Gedimino kalną, landšaftas viduramžių miesto poreikių požiūriu. Duomenys padeda įsivaizduoti, koks buvo Kreivasis miestas ir koks jo vaidmuo viso Vilniaus kontekste. The cultural layer started forming in the part of Sapieginė hills located in front of Gediminas Hill in the 13th–14th c., when the formation of Vilnius as the residence city of the duke began. Uninterrupted human activity in the hills lasted until the turn of the 14th–15th c.; later the traces of collapse are detected and the sporadic finds of the early 15th c. show that there were isolated attempts to restore life. The chronology and content of the cultural layer as well as the geographic-orographic location of the territory allows relating this part of the hills to the Crooked city (Crooked Castle), which was burnt down on 16.09.1390. We attempt to make sure of the validity of localising the Crooked city in the hills and to broaden our knowledge of its size, form, living and defence conditions, the structure, as well as to understand its purpose, significance and influence in the context of Vilnius. The territory under discussion consists of several segments of hills: Bleak Hill, Table Hill, North and South amphitheatres (total area: 12 ha). Its major part consists of slopes of different steepness and configuration, cascading to old washes and gradually, in the shape of an amphitheatre, rising at the edges of sufotic circuses. The area currently suitable for construction covers around 4.2 ha, which is quite a significant size according to the areas of cities of the Middle Ages, showing that a large part of Vilnius could be established here. Basing on the research of the history of nature, the paper analyses and evaluates the landscape of the part of Sapieginė hills, dating back to the 14th c., in front of Gediminas Hill from the point of view of the needs of a city of the Middle Ages. The data help to draw a picture of the Crooked city and its role in the context of Vilnius.

Vienas iš pirmosios Lietuvos Respublikos jaunosios istorikų kartos atstovų Konstantinas Avižonis 1933–1934 metais išvyko ieškoti istorinių dokumentų Lenkijos archyvuose. Nesant diplomatinių ryšių ir tarp abiejų valstybių tvyrant „šaltojo karo“ atmosferai tai buvo labai reta galimybė, kuria pasinaudojo lietuvių istorikas. Devynių mėnesių darbo Krokuvos archyvuose ir bibliotekose rezultatas – didžiausia nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje dar spėta išleisti monografija „Bajorai Lietuvos valstybiniame gyvenime Vazų laikais“. Ši publikacija – tai K. Avižonio ataskaita apie darbą Lenkijos archyvuose. Konstantinas Avižonis (1909-1969) was one of the first Lithuanian historians who went to the archives in Poland after 1920 when diplomatic relations between the two states were severed. He received PhD at the University of Berlin and began to explore terra incognita in the Lithuanian historiography - the period after the Union of Lublin, 1569. K. Avižonis wrote the report about his work in the archives and libraries of Poland (mostly in Krakow). There he found a large amount of historical documents. Instructions, testaments, inventories, correspondence, trial decisions, memoirs, biographies etc were valuable sources which enabled the historian to evaluate social, economic and cultural life of the nobility. This material served as a basis for the greatest work in the Lithuanian historiography in 1918-1940's - a monograph which was written by K. Avižonis about the Lithuanian nobility during the era of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and the Kings of Poland Vasas. This publication is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of this prominent historian.

Lietuvos vardas pirmą kartą paminėtas 1009 m. Lietuvos ir lietuvių tautos požymiai per 1000 metų iš esmės pasikeitė, nors išliko sąlyginai pastovių juos nusakančių bruožų. Esminiai pokyčiai lietuvių žemėse vyko XII a. pabaigoje - XIII a. pirmoje pusėje. XIII a. ketvirtojo-penktojo dešimtmečių sandūroje gimė Lietuvos valstybė. XIII a. pabaigos - XIV a. Lietuvos valdovams iš Gedimino dinastijos skverbiantis į Rusios erdvę, išaugo teritorija, keitėsi gyventojų struktūra. Kito lietuvybės samprata, prie etninių ir konfesinių požymių iškilovalstybė kaip vis svarbesnis Lietuvos apibūdinimo dėmuo. Lietuvių etninėse ribose klostėsi Lietuvos politinė tauta, kurios pagrindas buvo viršutiniai bajorijos sluoksniai. 1569-1795 m. Lietuva sudarė uniją su Lenkija, bet neišnyko. Lietuva ir Lenkija buvo federacinės valstybės narės su visais valstybių požymiais. 1795-1918 m. Lietuva Rusijos imperijos sudėtyje. XIX a. užgimęs kultūrinis lituanistinis sąjūdis neužgeso iki Lietuvos valstybės atkūrimo. Formavosi daugiasluoksnė lietuvių kultūra. Atsiremdami į Lietuvos istorijos pažinimą bei nebandydami modernizuoti praeities, taikydami jai šiuolaikinį tautos sąvokos turinį, turime pripažinti, kad ir lietuvių tauta, ir pati Lietuva, nuolat besikeisdama, pereidama iš vieno pavidalo į kitą, niekad nenutraukė įvairių ryšių tarp tų pavidalų. Ji daug kartų keitėsi, tapdavo kitokia, bet ne kita. The name of Lithuania was first mentioned in 1009. Over 1000 years, characteristics of Lithuania and the Lithuanian nation have changed fundamentally, although certain constant characteristics have been preserved. Key changes took place in Lithuania at the end of the 12th–first half of the 13th c. In the 4th–5th decade of the 13th c., the state of Lithuania was born. With Lithuanian rulers from the Gediminids dynasty penetrating into Russian lands at the end of the 13th c.–begging of the 14th c., the territory increased and the structure of the population changed. The meaning of Lithuanian identity transformed, and the state as the key definition of Lithuania overshadowed ethnic and confessional characteristics. A political nation of Lithuania was growing within ethnic boundaries of Lithuania. It mainly consisted from noble layers. In 1569–1795, Lithuania was united with Poland but it did not disappear. Lithuania and Poland were members of a federative state with all features of states In 1795–1918, Lithuanian was annexed to the Russian Empire. The Lithuanian cultural movement born in the 19th c. did not disappear until the very restoration of the state of Lithuania. A multilayer Lithuania culture was forming. Bearing in mind the perception of Lithuanian history and not trying to modernise the past, but applying the modern content of the concept of a nation, we must admit that the Lithuanian nation and Lithuania itself never terminated various relations while changing or transiting from one form of state to another. Modern Lithuania and the Lithuanian nations is a direct heir of Lithuania and Lithuanians of the beginning of the 11th c. It has the same place in the world and speaks the same language. It transformed many times, but never changed.

Straipsnyje aptariama šiuolaikinio vokiečių istoriko ir istoriografijos teoretiko Jörno Rüseno, ne kartą apsilankiusio ir Lietuvoje, istoriografijos koncepcija. Apžvelgiama Rüseno mąstymo sklaida istoriografijos tradicijoje. Rüsenas tęsdamas vokiečių tradiciją apmąsto istoriografijos procesus, laiko sampratą istorijoje ir žmogaus kultūrines orientacijas. Jo istoriografijos koncepcija padeda atskleisti šiuolaikinės istoriografijos pokyčius, istorikų požiūrį į istorinius faktus, objektyvumą ir metodinį racionalumą. Rüsenas iškyla kaip nuosaikus vokiškosios hermeneutikos tęsėjas ir modernios bei postmodernios minties derintojas. Straipsnyje dėmesys skiriamas Rüseno išplėtotai istorinės sąmonės sampratai ir istorinio pasakojimo tipologijai The most important aspect in the research of the contemporary German historian and historiography theoretician Jörn Rüsen (b. 1938) is the philosophy and culture of history, humanism, the links between cultures and the politics and aesthetics of history. Rüsen’s historiography conception is discussed in this article in line with modern and postmodern thought. The greatest attention is directed towards historical consciousness, the typology of historical narrative, and the possibility of adapting it to Lithuanian literature. Rüsen assigns four historical narrative styles: traditional, representative, critical and genetic. The most important accents are based on historical facts, objectivity, methodical rationalism, a variety of interpretations and the ability to relate how it really was. Rüsen perceives the truth as a matter that involves agreement determined by functions of cultural orientation, rational arguments, moral and spiritual needs. Objective narrative is no longer possible in postmodern discourse. However Rüsen believes that in connecting storytelling with cultural experience we can aim for objectivity. He also believes that three time dimensions are important in the interpretation of historical narration – the past, the present and the future. Rüsen proposes that history is like a mirror from the past into which a contemporary person looks in, wanting to know something of the future

Šiandien galime rinktis tarp Kotrynos II lietuviams siūlyto „įtvirtintos tvarkos“ pasakojimo ir LDK Respublikos kurto laisvės naratyvo, tarp skirtingų tautos praeities perskaitymų. Neįmanoma gyventi be pasakojimo. Pasakojimas – savitas tautos savikūros būdas. Juo remdamasi bendruomenė gali konstruoti ir saugoti socialinę tikrovę. Būtent ši pasakojimo galia sureikšmina ir istoriko vaidmenį: nuo jo profesinės bei etinės laikysenos priklauso, kokia tautos praeitis formuoja jos ateitį. Todėl svarbu, kad pasakotojo pasirinkimas būtų kuo sąmoningesnis ir atsakingesnis. Atsakingam pasakotojui derėtų pasverti vieno ar kito naratyvo įtaką dabartinės bendruomenės tapatybei bei jos elgsenoms. Pačiai istorikų bendrijai šiandien reikėtų išsamiau nagrinėti ir aptarinėti viešai sekamo istorinio pasakojimo ištakas, kompoziciją, nuostatas bei pobūdį. Būtinas didesnis dėmesys vadovėlių naratyvui. Nuo mūsų valios pareina, ar šiandienos nacionalinis naratyvas bus iš svetimų tekstų nuolaužų sudėliotas, inertiškas, nesavarankiškas, nerišlus, uždaras, monologiškas, depresyvus, ar gebėsime jį kurti savarankišką, atvirą, polilogišką, nuoseklų, aistringai tiesos siekiantį, išėjusiųjų ir gyvųjų dialogu grįstą. Pirmasis pasirinkimas kur kas paprastesnis. Antrasis pasirinkimas reikalauja kur kas daugiau kūrybinių pastangų, maištingos abejonės ankstesnių istorinių diskursų įtvirtintais teiginiais, sunkių tiesos paieškų. Tačiau būtent iš tokio sąmoningo pasirinkimo kilusiu nacionaliniu pasakojimu galėtų gerokai patikimiau remtis trečiosios Lietuvos Respublikos laisvė. Today we can choose between a narrative about “the established order” suggested by Catherine II and a narrative of freedom created by the Republic of the GDL and between different readings about the nation's past. It is impossible to live without a narrative. A narrative is a distinctive way of self-creation of the nation. With regard to it, a community may construct and secure social reality. This power of the narrative gives significance to a historian's role: the past which forms the future depends on a historian's professional and ethical position. Therefore it is important that a narrator's choice would be as conscious and responsible as possible. A responsible narrator should decide between the influence of one or another narrative to the identity of nowadays community and its behaviour. Currently, a wide community of historians should analyse and discuss the beginnings, composition, attitudes and nature of a publicly told historic narrative in more detail. More attention should be paid to the narrative in textbooks. It depends on our will if a nowadays national narrative is going to be made of fragments from borrowed texts and characterised as inert, dependent, incoherent, close, monologic, and depressive or we will be able to make it independent, open, polylogic, consistent, passionately seeking for truth and based on a dialogue between the dead and the living. The first choice is much simpler. The second one requires much more creative effort, rebellious doubt regarding the well-established statements of former historical discourses and hard search for truth. However, the third freedom of the republic of Lithuania could be more reliably based on a national narrative derived from this conscious choice.

Liublino unijos tyrimai nuo pat XX amžiaus pradžios daugiausia buvo sutelkti į rezultatus, o ne į priežastis ar įtaką. Pavyzdžiai rodo, jog gerai XVI amžiaus Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės visuomenės mes dar nepažįstame. Panašu, kad luomų ribos buvo korėtesnės, turtinės ir socialinės padėties pokyčiai dažnesni, o bajorijos vaidmuo visuomenėje aktyvesnis, nei iki tol manėme. Smukesnįjį bajorą, miestietį ar net bet kurios socialinės padėties žmogų siejo tiesioginis ryšys su valdovu ar jo administracija, jis neliko nominalus, o juo buvo naudojamasi. Regis, Liublino laikų visuomenę turime ne tik pažinti šaltinių analizės būdu, bet dar ir dar kartą pamėginti konceptualizuoti luomus, o kartu ir visą visuomenės vaizdinį. O pažinti XVI amžiaus visuomenę ir būtina tam, kad suprastume Liublino uniją – jos reikšmę ir svarbą. Juk niekas nebuvo patenkintas vadovėline Žalgirio mūšio koncepcija, kol prie šlovingos pergalės, kokia buvo švenčiama šią vasarą, nebuvo pridurtas ir diplomatinio pralaimėjimo, tąkart išsprūdusios galutinės pergalės, kartėlis. Liublino unijai trūksta būtent šios, ano meto visuomenės vertinimo dimensijos. Tačiau nereikia perdėm skubėti. Kai visuomenės istorijos Damoklo kardas aplips pakankamu kiekiu tyrimų, jis kris, perkirsdamas po juo susimezgusį Liublino unijos Gordijaus mazgą. Tuomet, galbūt bent kuriam laikui, galėsime užversti tą puslapį ir ramiai laukti, kol nauji protai sugalvos naujas Liublino koncepcijas. The research of the Union of Lublin from the very early 20th c. was mainly result-oriented rather than focused on causes or influence. Examples show that we still do not know the society of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) of the 16th c. It seems that the boundaries of classes were not strict, the changes in financial and social status were more frequent, and the role of nobility in society was more active than we have thought so far. A petty nobleman, a city dweller or even a person of any social status was directly related to the sovereign and his administration; he was not nominal, instead, he was used. We should get to know the society of the Lublin period not only through source analysis, but we should again try to conceptualise classes and the entire image of society. Knowledge of the 16th c. society is also necessary in order to understand the Union of Lublin – its significance and importance. Nobody was satisfied with the textbook concept of the Battle of Grunwald until the glorious victory, the anniversary whereof was celebrated this summer, was supplemented with the bitterness of the diplomatic defeat, the final victory that slipped at that time. The Union of Lublin lacks namely this dimension of the evaluation of the then society. However, we should not hasten too much. When the Sword of Damocles of social history is covered with the sufficient number of researches, it will fall and cut the Gordian knot of the Union of Lublin. Then, at least for a certain period, we will be able to close that page and calmly wait until the new minds devise the new concepts of Lublin.

Yra teigiama, kad atsiranda būtinybė tirti ne tik sovietmečio laikotarpį, bet reikia tirti ir mūsų dabartinės nepriklausomos valstybės istoriją. Pastebima, kad labai svarbūs yra pačių istorikų atsiminimai, nes jie yra kitų atsiminimų, svarbių istorijos šaltinių tyrėjai. Nurodoma, kad sovietų laikais istorikai buvo pagrindinis valdžios įrankis. To pavyzdžiu yra sovietmečiu buvusių atskirų lietuvių istorikų pozicija. Atkreipiamas dėmesys, kad iki šiol nėra sovietmečio istorikų dienoraščių publikacijų. Svarbu pažymėti, kad istorikų prisiminimams būdingas profesinis akylumas ir šaltinių tyrimų patirtis. Istorikui yra svarbus doras praeities faktų interpretavimas. Atkreipiamas dėmesys į V. Merkio prisiminimų knygos ,,Atminties prošvaistės“ pristatymą. Įdomu, kad jo knygos pristatyme dalyvavo nemažai autoriaus knygos herojų. Konstatuojama, kad V. Merkio atsiminimai yra ne tik individualios atminties prošvaistė, bet ir nuosekli sovietinio gyvenimo versija. Pažymima, kad autorius turėjo pripažintą statusą tarp tikrų istorikų. Pastebima, jog V. Merkys turėjo ilgaamžę patirtį ir pasižymėjo akademine išmintimi. Tai lėmė, kad jis pasirinko santūraus liudytojo vaidmenį. Savo atminties versijas jis pasitikrino archyviniuose dokumentuose. Atkreipiamas dėmesys, kad istoriko A. Švedo parengta knyga ,,Matricos nelaisvėje“, – svarbus sovietmečio atminties lobis. Šioje knygoje kruopščiai užfiksuoti E. Gudavičiaus atsiminimai. A. Švedas naudojosi interviu metodu. Pažymima, kad V. Merkys savo atsiminimuose sugebėjo įvairiau pažvelgti į savo herojus ir juos vertina skirtingais masteliais. A necessity for research of no only the soviet period but also the history of our current independent state is claimed to be present. It is noted that historians' memoirs are very important, since they are researchers of other memoirs, important sources of history. It is noted that in soviet times historians were the main tool of power. A position held by individual Lithuanian historians during the soviet time is a good example of that. It should be noted that no publications of soviet time historians' diaries have been issued yet. It is important to state that the characteristic features of historians' memoirs include professional vigilance and experience of researches of sources. Historian must give a fair interpretation of the facts from the past. Attention is paid to the introduction of V. Merkys' book of memoirs "Atminties prošvaistės" (Gleams of Memory). It is interesting to mention that quite a lot of characters from the author's book were present at the introduction. It is stated that V. Merkys' memoirs are not just a gleam of an individual memory, but rather a consistent version of soviet life. It is noted that the author was recognised among the real historians. J. Merkys had a long-standing experience and demonstrated academic wisdom. It determined the author choosing the role of a modest witness. He checked his memory versions in the arhive documents. It must be noted that a book "Matricos nelaisvėje" (Captured by matrix) by historian A. Švedas was a significant treasure of the soviet memory. E. Gudavičius' memoirs are diligently copied in the book. A. Švedas uses the interview method. It is noted that V. Merkys in his memoirs managed to take a more diverse look at his characters and assesses them by different scales.

Straipsnyje analizuojami heraldikai skirti Baltramiejaus Paprockio (1543–1614) kūriniai: „Turčius“ (Panosza), „Dorybės lizdas“ (Gnieżdo cnoty) ir „Lenkijos riterių herbai“ (Herby rycerstwa polskiego), „Karališkasis sodas“ (Ogród królewski). Atkreipiamas dėmesys j nevienodą Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės ir Lenkijos heraldikos kilmės ir reikšmių vertinimą, skirtingą abiejų kraštų istorijos aiškinimą. Paprockis nepritarė Lietuvių bajorijos kildinimo iš romėnų idėjai. Ignoruodamas istoriografijos žinias, jis nuvertino pagoniškos Lietuvos valstybingumo tradiciją iki Jogailos laikų. Abejodamas Lietuvos bajorų giminių ir herbų senumu, vertino juos kaip antraeilius Abiejų Tautų Respublikoje. Paprockis savo darbuose savotiškai polemizavo su tuometinio kronikininko Motiejaus Stryjkovskio (1547–1593) požiūriu, pagrindusiu Lietuvos istorijos tradiciją ir – priešingai savo intencijoms – sustiprinusiu LDK gyventojų išskirtinumo sampratą. Paprockio pažiūrų priežastys nėra aiškios. Galbūt jis svarstė apie kitokią tautų sąjungą. Jo darbuose, parašytuose po 1588 m., emigravus į Kromeryžą (Moravija), pasikartoja nuorodos apie bendrą lenkų ir čekų kilmę, teigiama daugelio lenkų herbų čekiška kilmė. Taip pabrėžiant dviejų slavų tautų ryšį, nedrąsiai siūloma Lietuvos ir Lenkijos unijos alternatyva The article analyses works of Bartholomew Paprocki (1543–1614) for heraldry: “Rich Man” (Panosza), “Family Virtues” (Gnieżdo cnoty) and “Heraldic Arms of the Polish Knighthood” (Herby rycerstwa polskiego), “Royal Garden” (Ogród królewski). Attention is drawn to the unequal assessment of origin and meanings of heraldry of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland, different interpretation of history of both countries. Paprocki did not support the idea of the Lithuanian nobility descending from Romans. Ignoring historiographical knowledge, he belittled the tradition of pagan Lithuanian statehood to Jagiellonian times. Questioning the age of relatives and coats of arms of the Lithuanian nobility, he rated them as secondary in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. In his works, Paprocki was to a certain extent polemicizing with the standpoint of Matthew Stryjkowski (1547-1593), chronicler of those times, that grounded the tradition of Lithuanian history and - in contrast to his intentions – strengthened the notion of exceptionality of population of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The reasons for Paprocki’s views are unclear. Perhaps, he considered a different union of nations. His works written after 1588, having emigrated to Kroměříž (Moravia), contain repetitive references to the common Polish and Czech origin, state the Czech origin of many Polish coats of arms. Such emphasis on the relationship between two Slavic nations is a tentative suggestion of an alternative to the Lithuanian and Polish union

Knygos istorijos šaltinių mokslas, arba šaltiniotyra, – knygotyros dalykas, tiriantis knygos istorijos šaltinių atsiradimą, jų išaiškinimą, klasifikavimą, vertinimą ir naudojimą. Universalus šaltinių išteklių apdorojimo metodologinis sprendimas yra jų klasifikavimas. Pagrindinės klasifikavimo sąvokos yra tipas ir rūšis. Įvairių šalių mokslininkų sutarimu šaltinių tipas dažniausiai nustatomas pagal tokius požymius: pagal atsiradimo laiką (skirstomi į pirminius ir antrinius), pagal informacijos formą (skirstomi į rašytinius, vaizdinius, garsinius, lingvistinius ir daiktinius). Knygos istorijai svarbiausias antrasis požymis. Rašytiniai šaltiniai skirstomi į: 1) tiriamos knygos, 2) direktyviniai dokumentai, 3) kritikos ir vertinimo medžiaga, 4) bibliografinės rodyklės, 5) statistikos žinynai, 6) knygos įstaigų ir įmonių žinynai, katalogai, adresų knygos, 7) archyviniai raštvedybos dokumentai, 8) leidinių anonsavimo publikacijos, 9) periodinių leidinių informacinė medžiaga, 10) dienoraščiai, 11) laiškai, 12) atsiminimai, 13) kitų mokslų knygos tyrinėjimai, 14) publicistika, 15) knygų nuosavybės ženklai, 16) kiti rankraštiniai ir spausdintiniai šaltiniai. Nerašytiniams šaltiniams skiriami: 1) vaizdo ir garso dokumentai, 2) materialinės kultūros objektai (pastatai, įrengimai, memorialiniai paminklai, knygos kultūros priemonės). Kritinis rašytinių šaltinių vertinimas padeda nustatyti šaltinio kaip dokumento rūšį ir jo požymius, bei dokumento reikšmę. Remdamasis šaltinių visuma tyrėjas atkuria knygos praeities faktus ir reiškinius, kurie sudaro pagrindą knygos raidos dėsningumams nustatyti. [sutrumpintas autoriaus tekstas] Investigation of book history sources or source research is a book science discipline that investigates the origin of book history sources, their retrieval, classification, evaluation and usage. The theoretical part of source investigation includes the analysis of the authenticity, reliability, and typology of sources. The applied part of source investigation focuses on the issues of building the basis of sources and their usage. The general solution in the methodology of processing sources is classification. The main concepts of classification are type and sort. Scholars of different countries have agreed that a type is determined by the following attributes: time of origin (primary and secondary), information format (written, visual, audial, linguistic, or objects). Book history perceives the second attribute as the most important because, according to it, sources are defined as written and non-written. Written sources are most numerous; depending on their purpose they are grouped into the following sorts: 1) books; 2) official documents; 3) critical and evaluation materials; 4) bibliographies; 5) statistical documents; 6) reference books of institutions and companies, catalogues, address books; 7) archival clerical documents; 8) advertisements of publications; 9) information material of periodicals; 10) diaries; 11) correspondence; 12) memoirs; 13) book research in other sciences; 14) publicistic writings; 15) book ownership marks; 16) other manuscript or printed sources. Non-written sources include: 1) visual and audial documents; 2) objects of material culture (buildings, equipment, memorials, book culture means). A researcher builds his conclusions on the totality of sources and reconstructs the facts and phenomena that belong to the past of a book and serve as a basis for determining the regularities of its development.

Straipsnyje aptariama stačiatikių religinės mažumos padėtis Baltijos šalyse - Estijoje, Latvijoje ir Lietuvoje 1918-1940 m. Pateikiami statistiniai duomenys, liudijantys, kad minėtose šalyse stačiatikiai sudaro religinę mažumą. XX amžiaus antrajame dešimtmetyje ši mažuma Estijoje sudarė 19 %, Latvijoje — 10 %, Lietuvoje - 1 % (be Vilniaus regiono). Baltijos valstybėse stačiatikiai laikyti carinės Rusijos reliktu. Trumpai apžvelgiamos Stačiatikių Bažnyčios veikimo kiekvienoje iš trijų valstybių problemos. Pagrindinė stačiatikių problema Estijoje buvo ne tiek valstybės pripažinimas, kiek nuomonės apie juos, kaip naivius ir lengvai apgaunamus, paneigimas. Tautinėje istoriografijoje siekta keisti požiūrį į perėjimą į stačiatikių tikėjimą. Latvijoje, kur didžioji dalis stačiatikių buvo rusų tautybės, esminė problema buvo valstybės pripažinimas. Tai pavyko pasiekti tik baigiantis XX amžiaus trečiajam dešimtmečiui, įrodžius atsidavimą Latvijai ir latvių kalbai. Ypač daug prisidėjo arkivyskupas Janis (Pomerrs).Lietuvoje nebuvo poreikio tapti religine mažuma, nes visi stačiatikiai priklausė rusų ar baltarusių etninėms mažumoms. The article discusses the status of the Orthodox Christian religious minority in the Baltic countries: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in 1918-1940. It provides statistical data showing that Orthodox Christians were a religious minority in those countries. In the second decade of the twentieth century, the share of this minority was 19 % in Estonia, 10 % in Latvia, and 1 % in Lithuania (excluding Vilnius region). In the Baltic states, Orthodox Christians were considered as a relic of tsarist Russia. The article provides a brief overview of the problems faced by the Orthodox Church in each of the three states. In Estonia, the main problem of Orthodox Christians was not so their recognition by the state as negation of the opinion of them as naïve and easy-to-cheat people. In the national historiography, it was sought to change the attitude to the conversion to the Orthodox faith. In Latvia, where the majority of Orthodox Christians were ethnic Russians, the recognition by the state was the essential problem. This was achieved only at the end of the third decade of the twentieth century, when they managed to show their dedication to Latvia and Latvian language. An especially great contribution was made by Archbishop Janis (Pomerrs). In Lithuania, they did not need to become a religious minority because all Orthodox Christians belonged to the Russian or Byelorussian ethnic minorities.

Straipsnyje yra analizuojama mokslinė istorinė periodika nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje 1921 – 1940 m. Lėšų stygius ir istorikų organizacinis silpnumas lėmė mokslinės istorinės periodikos nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje sudėtingą kūrimąsi. Istorinių žurnalų, už kurių leidybą daugiausiai buvo atsakinga Kauno universiteto profesūra bei Lietuvos istorikų draugija, buvo daug, tačiau jų gyvavimas buvo trumpalaikis. Iš pradžių žurnalai neturėjo visų tokio pobūdžio periodikai būdingų bruožų, tačiau pamažu tobulėjo ir savo forma bei turiniu priartėjo prie Vakarų Europos istorinių žurnalų. Žurnaluose buvo spausdinami lietuvių ir užsienio istorikų darbai, šaltinių publikacijos, bibliografijos ir kt. Paprastai straipsniai būdavo ypatingai didelės apimties, kartais per kelis žurnalo numerius, viename tome būdavo išspausdinama net visa daktaro disertacija („Senovės“ III tome J. Jakšto disertacija). Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės bei lietuvių tautinio atgimimo problemos buvo dominuojančios temos istorinėje periodikoje. Joje atsispindėjo ir Vytauto Didžiojo kulto ažiotažas. Nepriklausomybės laikotarpiu Lietuvos istorikams reikšti savo mintis spaudoje buvo atviri keliai, nes jų darbuose puoselėjama garbinga istorinė praeitis tarnavo kaip tautos dvasios gaivintoja ir stiprintoja. Nemokslinė, populiarioji spauda dėl didelio visuomenės susidomėjimo savo praeitimi buvo vyraujanti, o mokslininkų tyrinėtojų karta brendo pamažu. The article discusses the circumstances of the revival of the Lithuanian historical periodic press in the years of independence. Close attention is given to the content and form of history science publications, their publishers, editors and authors as well as to the ways these publications were updated to reach the standards of West European periodicals. The author also poses the question of the transience of some historical publications and a frequent change of their titles. In addition, the article also expounds on the development of the Lithuanian history science periodicals, their state and the problems they dealt with. The article also concentrates on the following issues: what objectives and aims were pursued by history science periodicals, why their existence was short-termed and why scientific journals, next to research articles, published many documents and historical sources. Historians who contributed to the development of history science by their articles published in scientific journals, youth and party magazines and newspapers are also mentioned. The author presents the most relevant historical conceptions of that period, their novelty and national originality, historians’ methodological approaches as well as concentrates on the importance of the spread of historical knowledge in fostering national identity.

Visos trys totoriaus tapatybės (Bajoro, Kario, Raštininko), susiformavusios veikiant LDK sociokultūriniams procesams, istorinių, filologinių kultūrologinių tyrimų dėka stipriai veikia dabartinių totorių savivoką, nepriklausomai nuo diasporos gyvavimo vietos. Bajorų tapatybėje, kuri įveikė nestabilumo pavojų, taikiai sugyvena LDK laikų ir Rusijos imperijos bajorystės įsivaizdavimas. Kario tapatybėje, nepaisant jos komplikuoto konstravimo, vyrauja LDK / Lietuvos / Lenkijos / Baltarusijos gynėjo įvaizdis. Raštininko tapatybę, silpniausiai istoriografiškai reflektuotą, užgožia totorių raštijos tekstai, tačiau nekyla abejonių, kad Raštininkas – tai reikšmingiausia totorių kultūros figūra. Vis dėlto atviras lieka klausimas, kam priklauso išryškintos totorių bajoro ir kario tapatybės, sukonstruotos iš LDK ir Rusijos teisės normų, jų interpretacijų ir kasdienybės realijų. Lenkų istoriografijai, kuri akivaizdžiai formuoja pagrindines totoristikos koncepcijas, LDK totorius bajoras yra „lenkų bajoras", vadinasi, priklauso lenkų kultūrai. Panašiai jai priklauso totorius karys. Baltarusiškos priklausomybės akcentas būdingas baltarusių istoriografijai, kuri perkelia akcentus iš dabarties į praeitį. Lietuvos istoriografijoje totorių bajoro ir kario tapatybės, kaip netyrinėta marginalija, apskritai nėra susietos su paveldo „dalybų" problema. Raštininkas vis dar lieka užsidaręs totorių diasporoje ir toliau atlieka savo kultūrinę misiją – kopijuoja ir saugo totorių rašytinį paveldą. Due to historical and philological research, all the three identities of Tartars (the Nobleman, the Warrior, and the Scribe), which formed under socio-cultural processes of the GDL, have a strong impact on the self-perception of modern tartars irrespective of a diaspora’s place of residence. Within the identity of noblemen, which overcame the peril of instability, the images of nobility existing in the times of the GDL and that of the Russian Empire combine without any problems. As far as the identity of the Warrior is concerned, despite its complicated construction, the image of the defender of the GDL Lithuania/Poland or Belarus prevails. The identity of the Scribe is the least deflected in terms of historiography, however, there is no doubt that the Scribe is one of the most significant figures in the Tartar culture. However, the question concerning the belonging of the highlighted indefinites of the Tartar nobleman and the Tartar warrior, constructed from Russia and the GDL’s legal norms, their interpretations and everyday reality, remains open. In Polish historiography, which clearly shapes the key concepts of the Tartar studies, the Nobleman of the GDL is a “Polish nobleman”, therefore, he belongs to the Polish culture. The same can be said about the identity of Tartar warriors. The accent of the Belarusian identity is characteristic of the Belarusian historiography, which transfers accents from the present to the past. In the Lithuanian historiography, the identities of the Tartar Nobleman and the Tartar Warrior are not related to the problem of the “division” of the heritage. The Scribe still remains closed in the Tartar diaspora and further performs his cultural mission, i.e. to copy and preserve the Tartar written heritage.

Straipsnyje yra analizuojama istorijos kultūra šiuolaikinėje Lietuvoje: daugiakultūriškumo samprata visuomenėje ir Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštijos tyrimuose. Kartu su reikšmingais mokslinių teorijų pokyčiais kinta ir visuomenės aprašymo būdai. To išimtis nėra sąvokos ,,daugiakultūriškumas“, ,,daugiakultūrė visuomenė“. Toks naujadarų prasiskverbimas į mokslą bei politinį gyvenimą ir kasdienybę yra pakitusios savimonės padarinys. Daugiakultūriškumo ideologija aiškina, kad visuomenę turėtų sudaryti skirtingos kultūrinės grupės arba būtų leidžiama jas į ją įtraukti ir turinčios lygiavertį statusą. XX a. aštuntajame dešimtmetyje anglakalbėse valstybėse daugiakultūriškumas pradėtas įgyvendinti kaip oficiali politika. Po Sovietų Sąjungos žlugimo daugiakultūriškumas buvo pateiktas laisvėjančiai Lietuvos visuomenei. Šios sąvokos vartojimą šiuolaikinėje Lietuvoje istoriškai pradėjo išeiviai liberalai. Istorikams svarbu ne aprašyti ,,kaip buvo iš tikrųjų“, o dalyvauti kuriant istoriją. Daugiakultūriškumas XX a. paskutinio dešimtmečio pabaigoje vis labiau įsitvirtino Lietuvos humanitariniuose ir socialiniuose moksluose. Kiek vėliau ši sąvoka pradėta vartoti kai kuriuose švietimo dokumentuose. Pastaruoju metu daugiakultūriškumo sąvoka vartojama dažniau, tačiau ne visuotinai. The article explores the attitude to the multiculturalism, its relations with history and problems of identity in present Lithuania. The problem of multiculturalism in present Lithuania is closely connected with identity of Lithuanians. As it seems to me, external interest of some historians a variety of cultures frequently opens descriptive (demographic) multiculturalism, or any certain model of multiculturalism. Besides the traditional sight of historians at formation of the Lithuanian nation as historical subject first of all is connected with the theory of ethnos and-or the ethnic nation. There is a problem. One of the first after 1990 sintetic works of the ancient history of Lithuania was "History of Lithuania up to 1795" by Z. Kiaupa, J. Kiaupenė, A. Kuncevičius who have left in 1995. As the main reality of the Lithuanian history they consider Lithuanian people, ideas, feelings and acts of its members the given historiographie job can be named ethnocentristic. Various religious, ethnic and racial minority (here speech does not go about a role of Lithuanians, Ruthenus and Poles) in this version of history of Grand Duchy of Lithuania of three authors are represented as additional, illustrative and as a matter of fact the statistical fact lost in image GDL as "the multinational state, the state of different beliefs and cultures". They are superseded on boondocks of history where they as though automatically get potential of insignificance and even greater threat and danger. "History of ancient Lithuania. 1009-1795" by Alfredas Bumblauskas - a vivid example of overdue connection of Lithuania to history of modernization of the Western Europe. It is new and even postmodernist work under the form in a context of the Lithuanian historiography. Traditional and modernist ethnocentrism in "History of ancient Lithuania. 1009-1795" have different value, and their specific weight during the historical argument - different. Modernist - opened and inclined to dialogue - the ethnocentrism competes and, apparently, wins the traditional ethnocentrism closed and mistrustful to another and their originality. I think that the exhaustive national history today should be considered not as one of alternatives which preference can give any of centres of science or the leadership of the Ministry of Education of Lithuania, and as a historical imperative for historians and the public as a whole. Simultaneously for Lithuania it is necessary flexible, focused on multiculturalism a policy of education. It would provide the option of the person which would correspond to its cultural identity, and also would enrich imagination of children, which collide with a variety, different languages and way of life.

Kaliningrado regiono įkūrimo ir tapimo TSRS dalimi istorija yra viena svarbiausių Kaliningrado istorikų nagrinėjamų temų. Tarybiniu laikotarpiu tuo klausimu buvo publikuotas tik vienas dokumentų rinkinys. Žlugus Tarybų Sąjungai ši problema ypač aktyviai studijuojama. Straipsnyje pristatoma šių tyrinėjimų pagrindas ir istorija, apibrėžiamos j ų charakteristikos, apžvelgiami pagrindiniai publikuoti šia tema istoriniai dokumentai, atkreipiamas dėmesys į regiono mokslininkų laimėjimus ir apibūdinami pagrindiniai šiuolaikinės Kaliningrado istoriografijos bruožai. Per paskutiniuosius du dešimtmečius Kaliningrado istorikai sukūrė pakankamą dokumentinę bazę srities istorijos tyrimams. Įgyta vertinga šaltinių publikavimo ir darbo su archyvais patirtis. Išsiplėtė tyrimų erdvė. Pagrindinės (populiariausios) temos: švietimo istorija, gyventojai, religinės sąlygos, vietinės valdžios politika, pokario ekonominė raida. Nepakanka dėmesio visuomenės politinei ir socialinei istorijai, kultūros klausimams, atskirų regionų istorijai, tautinės- etninės sudėties tyrimamas. Kaliningrado srities pirmojo dešimtmečio istorijos tyrimų aiški persvara rodo, kad pakutinieji 50 šios srities gyvavimo metai dar netapo mokslo tyrimų objektu. The history of the founding of the Kaliningrad region, as part of the USSR, is one of the most vital issues for Kaliningrad historians. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, this problem is actively investigated. The article presents the background and history of these investigations, draws the characterization of them, defines the main historical documents published on this issue, points out the progress of the regional researchers and gives general characteristics of contemporary Kaliningrad historiography.

Tyrinėjant Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės bajorijos nusikalstamumą neretaitenka aptikti bylų apie specifinius to meto teisinius nusižengimus – dažniausiai ginkluotus ir smurtinius svetimų valdų užpuolimus ir nusiaubimus (antpuolius). Šie nusižengimai būdingi Abiejų Tautų Respublikos regionui. Vėlyvaisiais viduramžiais ir Naujųjų laikų pradžioje tokio tipo ginčų tarp feodalų būta nemažai. Nagrinėjamų nusikaltimų terminologija nėra nusistovėjusi. Originalo kalbomis jie vadinti "imiptio", "invasio", "najazd", "zajazd", "napašč", "наехание", "найсте", "наложение", "наезд", "наездка". Peržvelgus neblogai išlikusias XVIII a. Vilniaus pavieto pilies teismo knygas, kuriose vyrauja lenkų kalba, galima pasekti, kokia buvo antpuolio termino vartosena šioje kalboje minėtuoju laikotarpiu LDK teritorijoje - Vilniaus regione. Lenkų kalboje antpuoliui apibūdinti vartojami "najazd", "zajazd" terminai. Vilniaus pavieto bajoriško kriminalinio pilies teismo terminologijoje neginčijamai vyraujantis yra "najazd" terminas. Lietuvių istoriografijoje vartojami "antpuolio", "užpuldinėjimo", "užpuolimo", "ginkluoto užpuolimo" terminai. Nors užpuolimo terminas nėra iš principo atmestinas, bet jis mažiau atskleidžia nusikaltimo specifiką - visų pirma jos staigumą, neilgą trukmę, organizuotumą ir masiškumą. Užpuolimą organizuoti iš principo gali ir vienas žmogus, antpuolis įmanomas tik dalyvaujant daugiau asmenų. Užpuolimas gali įvykti spontaniškai, o antpuolis yra bent jau minimaliai planuojamas, todėl "antpuolis" yra tinkamesnis terminas. The analysis of criminality of the szlachta of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) points out the cases about the specific legal offences of that period: mainly armed and violent attacks and devastations of foreign land. These offences are characteristic of the region of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the Late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the New Ages disputes of this type were common among feudalists. The terminology of the analysed offences is not steady. They were called imiptio, invasio, najazd, zajazd, napašč, наехание, найсте, наложение, наезд, наездка in original languages. The analysis of the surviving books of the 18th c. Vilnius Powiat Castle Court, mainly in the Polish language, enables monitoring of the use of the term “attack” in this language during the given period in the GDL territory – Vilnius region. The terms najazd and zajazd were used in the Polish language to denote an attack. The term najazd definitely prevailed in the terminology used by Vilnius Powiat Noble Criminal Castle Court. The terms of antpuolis [onslaught], užpuldinėjimas [raid], užpuolimas [attack], ginkluotas užpuolimas [armed attack] are used in Lithuanian historiography. Although the term užpuolimas is not to be rejected in principle, it reveals the specificity of the crime to a smaller extent – firstly, its suddenness, shortness, organisation and massiveness. Užpuolimas could be in principle organised by one person, whereas antpuolis was only possible by a larger number of people. Užpuolimas might be carried out spontaneously, whereas antpuolis requires at least minimal planning; therefore, antpuolis is a more suitable term.

XVIII a. II pusėje, Stanislovo Augusto valdymo metais, Lietuvos Didžioji Kunigaikštystė (LDK) vadinta ir valstybe, ir provincija. Tokie skirtingi įvardijimai aptinkami konstitucijose ir kituose oficialiuose centrinės ir vietinės Abiejų Tautų Respublikos (ATR) valdžios institucijų dokumentuose, taip pat publicistikoje, mokslo darbuose ir vadovėliuose. Tad LDK laikyta viena iš trijų ATR provincijų (kartu su Didžiąja ir Mažąja Lenkija). Šis klausimas analizuotas lenkų istoriografijoje, tačiau reikia pastebėti, kad jei LDK – federacijos ryšiais susijungusios valstybės – statusas būtų likęs tik provincijos lygio, būtų kilęs lietuvių nepasitenkinimas. Straipsnyje aiškinamasi, kodėl LDK politikai nereagavo dėl pasikeitusio LDK statuso ir patys vadino ją provincija. Liublino uniją lietuviai traktavo kaip lygiateisių valstybių sąjungą. Tačiau laikui bėgant Lietuva imta laikyti viena iš trijų ATR dalių. Tai atitiko realų Lietuvos ekonominį, demografinį ir karinį potencialą, jos teritoriją 1569 m. apkarpius Lenkijos naudai. Tačiau nežiūrint retorikos, Ketverių metų seimo, 1791 m. gegužės 3 d. Konstitucijos, vadinamųjų didžiųjų komisijų atsiradimo, realus valstybinis jos statusas nepasikeitė. Lietuvos provincija, skirtingai nuo Lenkiją sudariusių Didžiosios ir Mažosios Lenkijos provincijų, turėjo visus valstybės atributus. ATR iki pat padalijimų liko dualistine valstybe. In the Commonwealth of the Two Nations during the rule of Stanisław August Poniatowski (1764-1795), the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was called one of the states of the Commonwealth and a province of the Commonwealth in Sejm and other documents. Parts of the Kingdom of Poland: Great Poland (Wielkopolska) and Lesser Poland (Małopolska) were also called provinces, but provinces of Poland, not of the Commonwealth. The reference to Lithuania as a province and some elements of the state's trialistic structure have suggested the idea in historiography about Lithuania's slide to the condition of one of the Commonwealth's three provinces. Elements of the state's trialistic structure are visible in the organisation of the work of the Sejm and their commissions. At the same time during the entire period of the Commonwealth's existence, the Commonwealth's dualistic state structure survived in the institutions of the two states (territory, treasury, army, etc.) and the executive government institutions. The state structure, despite the dangers that threatened it, survived until the fall of the Commonwealth. So when the 3 May 1791 Constitution posed a danger to this structure of the Commonwealth, this danger was legally eliminated by a pledge between the Two Nations on 20 October 1791. The references to Lithuania and two parts of Poland as provinces have different meanings. The so-called province of Lithuania was identical to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania with all its state attributes. Great Poland and Little Poland were provinces of the Kingdom of Poland without any state attributes. The conceptions of the province of Lithuania and the provinces of Great Poland and Little Poland show that the content of their statehood was completely different. Therefore the thesis of Lithuania becoming one of the Commonwealth's provinces is unfounded; it remained one of the Commonwealth's two states. That a unitary tendency strengthened in the Commonwealth and that there were efforts to constrict the content of Lithuania's statehood is a different matter. These tendencies were not realised.

R. Jasas įrodė, kad tiek vidurinioji, tiek išplėstinė (Bychovco kronikos) Lietuvos kronikų redakcija buvo sudaryta Alberto Goštauto aplinkoje. Ankstyvąjį viduriniosios redakcijos pavidalą parodo Krasińkio nuorašas (jame dar organiškai nesujungtos iš trumpojo kronikų sąvado paimtoji ir naujai parašyta legendinė dalis). Fiziškai seniausiame viduriniosios redakcijos Ališavos nuoraše (1550 m.) jau aptinkame pakeistus kai kurių legendinių kunigaikščių vardus ir Birutės (vėlyvame Jevreinovo nuoraše – ir Algirdo žygio į Maskvą) legendą. Šios dvi pakeitimų kryptys atsispindi ir išplėstinėje redakcijoje, kurioje dar randame intarpų iš rusų Hipatijaus metraščio, Bergomezės ir Miechovitos kronikų. Labai svarbus čia pradininko Palemono “perkėlimas” iš I į V amžių. Bychovco kronikos rankraštis neturėjo pradžios ir pabaigos, todėl apie jo pradžią buvo galima orientuotis iš ją citavusio M. Stryjkovskio teksto. Ten nurodoma, kad Palemonas bėgo ne nuo Nerono (kaip viduriniame sąvade), o nuo Atilos. Savo memoriale dėl I Lietuvos statuto A.Goštautas kalba apie “Lietuvos teisę, galiojančią nuo Atilos laikų”, kas patvirtina M.Strijkovskio citavimą. Jasas has demonstrated that both the middle and the extended edition (the Chronicles of Bychovc) of the Lithuanian Chronicles were made in the environment Albertas Goštautas. The early version of the middle edition is showed in the copy made by Krasińkis (where the legendary part taken from the brief digest of Chronicles and that written anew are not yet organically joined). Being physically the oldest, the middle edition copy by Ališava (1550) includes already changed names of some legendary Dukes (the late copy by Evreinov), and the legend about Birutė (Grand Duke Algirdas trip to Moscow). These two trends of changes are also seen in the extended edition where insertions from Russian Yearbook of Ipat’ev, and from Chronicles of Bergomes ir Miechovita, are also found. “Transposition” of the initiator Palemon from age I to V is very important here. The manuscript of the Chronicles of Bychovc had neither beginning nor ending, therefore its beginning might have been judged from the texts of M. Stryjkovskyi where they were quoted. Here, it is claimed that Palemon was running away not from Nero (as the middle edition puts it), but from Attila. In its Memorial on the Statute No.1 of Lithuania, A. Goštautas speaks of "the Lithuanian law, being effective from the time of Attila”, what confirms M. Stryjkovskyi‘s quotes. All of these features, on the level of those past times, link past of Lithuania to the history of the world. [summary by the author]

Straipsnyje apžvelgta, kaip Albertas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius Lietuvos istorijoje charakterizuoja aprašomus legendinius ir istorinius asmenis. Buvo nagrinėtos tik tiesioginės, autoriaus lūpomis išsakytos charakteristikos. Apibendrinus tyrimą, pristatyta personažų apibūdinimo variantų klasifikacija, aptarta kiekvienos charakteristikos rūšies stilistika, nurodytos personažų charakterizavimo būdų ir principų sąsajos su antikinės istoriografijos principais. The author proposed the results of her research, how Albertas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius characterizes fabulous and historic persons in his "Historia Lituana". There was examined only direct characterization, given by Kojelavičius himself in this work. The characterization of all persons in "Historia Lituana" composed of the two types. More circumstantial, longer characterization, called all-inone, belongs to the first type. It is of the two sorts itself. Personal inner, spiritual and psychic, consequently more abstract features are defined by one of them, and this sort can be described as the follow-up of the literary tradition of Livy and some other Roman historians. Longer sentences (they have form of periods sometimes), rhetorical figures are typical for it. Another all-in-one characterization is created according to the tradition of Suetonius and another historians of the lives of the Caesars. Not only inner features, but individual habits are depicted by this sort of charcterization. Short sentences without ornamentation make its mark. Fragmentary characterization belongs to the second type. Kojalavičius uses it for subordinate persons first of all and usually conveys it in short phrases. Sometimes the author uses the fragmentary characterization for some persons just for this once. Sometimes he scatters it over bigger amount of the text, so it is necessary to collect all features of described person for the reader himself. Sometimes the fragmentary character is added to the all-in-one characterization.

"Lenkų apaštalų" neigiamas įvaizdis Pirmosios Respublikos lietuvių istoriografijoje nepakito, nors bandyta aptarti krikščioniškųjų misijų pobūdį, jas suklasifikuoti, Kryžiaus karus suprantant kaip procesą, kurį pergyveno visa krikščioniškoji Vakarų Europa. Viena vertus, tai rodo, kad lietuvių istoriografija nekritiškai prisitaikė prie "tautinės politikos" ir kūrė alternatyvius lietuvių istorinės atminties modelius. Antra vertus, būtent tarpukariu lietuvių istoriografija pradėjo funkcionuoti - buvo įsteigtas Lietuvos istorijos tyrimo centras, pradėta leisti periodinius leidinius, istorikai aistringai diskutavo dėl istorijos vertinimų, atsižvelgdami į Vakarų Europos istoriografijos naujoves. Šapokos raginimas "rasti ir parodyti lietuvius" Lietuvos istorijoje galėjo atsirasti ne tik dėl vadinamojo "vidinio" istoriografijos atsinaujinimo arba kovos tarp romantikų ir pozityvistų, bet ir dėl tautininkų tuo metu vykdytos kultūrinės programos. Pagal jas bandyta formuoti ir požiūrį į istoriją, kurti naujus, režimui palankius įvaizdžius, tautinius simbolius. Kadangi lietuviams nesisekė susitarti su lenkais dėl Vilniaus, istorikai už visas praeityje lietuvių patirtas nesėkmes norėjo suversti kaltę lenkams. Lietuvos christianizacijos proceso tyrimas tam buvo ypač tinkamas. Nors buvo pripažinta, kad lenkai tarp lietuvių vykdė tik taikias misijas (o vokiečiai - karines/prievartines), tačiau lenkų įvaizdis dėl to nepagerėjo. Vytautas buvo iškeltas kaip Jogailos antipodas, savarankiškos Lietuvos teisių gynėjas ir tikrasis lietuvių krikščionintojas. The goal of this article is to discuss how Lithuanian historical scholarship deppicted the actions of the Order of Crusaders, often treating them in the same way as the concept of "cultural mission of Poland eastwards". The author hopes that while discussing these issues, the development of Lithuanian historiography of that period will be overviewed as well as attitude toward Polish missions in Lithuania.

Straipsnyje yra analizuojami klausimai, susiję su istorinių koncepcijų Ukrainos istoriografijoje, susijusių su Lietuvos Didžiąja Kunigaikštyste, formavimu. Svarbiausi šiuolaikinių ukrainiečių mokslininkų darbai, susiję su Lietuvos studijomis, yra F. Shabul‘do, N. Koval‘skiy, N. Yakovenko, N. Krikun, G. Boryak, P. Sas, E. Rusina, A. Gurbik, B. Cherkas. A. Blanutsa bei D. Vashchuk tyrimai. Su Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės geneze ir tolesniu vystymusi susijusios autorių koncepcijos buvo pateiktos akademinei bendruomenei. Pradėjo formuotis mokslinė XIV a. – XVI a. šaltinių tyrimų mokykla, kurios pradininku yra laikomas N. Kovals‘kiy. Šiai mokyklai dar priklauso V. Atamanenko, Yu. Svyatets, O. Dyachok ir kt. Naujajame XXI a. atsirado naujoji istorikų karta, kuri pradėjo tirti konkrečius Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės istorijos aspektus. B. Cherkas specializuojasi užsienio politikos tyrimuose, A. Blanutsa, L. Zherebtsova, W. Berkowskiy tiria ekonomiką, D. Vaschuk, V. Polischuk – teisę. Mokslinė Lietuvos studijų plėtra Ukrainoje atsispindi periodikoje, ypatingai Ukrainos istoriniuose žurnaluose. The issues which are connected with the development of the historical conceptions in the modern Ukrainian historiography concerning the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (henceforth. - the GDL) history are examined in this article. The main works among the modern Ukrainian Lithuanian studies, for our opinion, are books of F. Shabul'do, N. Koval'skiy, N. Yakovenko, N. Krikun, G. Boryak, P. Sas, E. Rusina, A. Gurbik, B. Cherkas, A. Blanutsa and D. Vashchuk. Consequently the authors' conceptions concerning the genesis of the GDL and its internal development were proposed to the scientific community. The formation of the scientific school for studying sources of 14th-16th centuries which was found by N. Koval'skiy (P. Kulakovskiy, V. Atamanenko, Yu. Svyatets, O. Dyachok etc.) has been started. The new, 21st century, gives new generation of historians, which started to research the specific aspects of the GDL development (the external policy - B. Cherkas; economic - A. Blanutsa, L. Zherebtsova, W. Berkowskiy; legal - D. Vaschuk, V. Polischuk). The scientific development of the Lithuanian studies in Ukraine reflects in periodicals, essentially on pages of the Ukrainian historical journal.

Straipsnyje atskleidžiamas personažų kalbėsenos pobūdis ir prasmė Alberto Vijūko-Kojalavičiaus „Lietuvos istorijoje“. Visi kalbėjimo atvejai yra klasifikuojami į grupes, pateikiama kiekvienos grupės kalbų pavyzdžių analizė, bandoma nustatyti kiekvienos kalbų grupės funkcijas, aptariamas kalbų santykis su antikinės istoriografijos kalbėsenos atvejais. Ryškiausia Kojalavičiaus „Lietuvos istorijos“ kalbų funkcija yra ornamento vaidmuo. Įvairių retorinių priemonių ir figūrų turtingos, poetizmais aprūpintos kalbos sudaro tam tikrą pakylėtos stilistikos elementą Kalbos paprastai charakterizuoja kalbėtojus. „Lietuvos istorijoje“ yra visos trys antikinės retorikos išskirtos kalbų rūšys: teismo, epideiktinės ir deliberatyvinės (tarimosi) kalbos. Daugiausia yra deliberatyvinio tipo kalbų. Galima teigti, kad tarimosi kalbos, egzistuodamos į praeitį nugrimzdusiame Kojalavičiaus kūrinio pasakojime, suteikia praeičiai ateities perspektyvos bruožų, o tekstą praturtina sudėtingesniais elementais. Kai kur dvi ar kelios viena šalia kitos sudėtos trumpos kalbos sudaro beletristinio pobūdžio dialogus. Sekdamas Antikos suformuota istoriografijos tradicija, autorius kuria vaizdingą, nenuobodų skaityti veikalą, bet laikosi tam tikrų ribų ir nepereina į grožinio kūrinio plotmę. Tiesioginių kalbų sukurtas vaizdas yra ryškesnis, emocinė įtampa stipresnė, bet netiesioginio kalbėjimo, ne taip smarkiai išsiskiriančio iš teksto, yra daug daugiau, nei tiesioginio. Tai tinka istoriniam pasakojimui. Iš viso „Lietuvos istorijoje“ rastos 333 kalbos. The article reveals the nature and meaning of the discourse of characters in “Historia Lituana” by Alebrtas Vijūkas-Kojalavičius. The author classifies all the instances of the discourse to groups, analyses examples of speeches belonging to each group, attempts to determine functions of each group, and discusses the relation of speeches with instances of speech in antique historiography. The most prominent function of the speeches in “Historia Lituana” is the ornamental one. The speeches are rich in various rhetoric means and figures, poetisms, creating an elevated style. These speeches usually characterise the speakers. “Historia Lituana” contains all the three types of antique rhetoric: judicial, epideictic and deliberative speeches, the latter being most abundant. Therefore, it can be argued that deliberative speeches existing in Kojalavičius past-oriented narrative endow the past with features of the future and enhances the text with more complex elements. In some places, two or more short speeches go together to form a dialogue of belletrist nature. By following the antique historiography tradition, the author creates a picturesque and engaging work, yet adheres to certain limits without entering the domain of fiction. The image created through direct speeches is more vivid, the motional tension is stronger, however, indirect speeches, which are not so highlighted, prevail in the text. It is suitable for a historic narrative. “Historia Lituana” contains 33 speeches.

Straipsnyje analizuojamas didžiausias istorinės tematikos Mikalojaus Akelaičio darbas -1862 m. Paryžiuje parašytas rankraštis "0pisanie Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego". Išsamesnė tuometinės Akelaičio aplinkos Paryžiuje, o ir paties rankraščio analizė parodė, kad šio veikalo atsiradimas glaudžiai susijęs su 1856 m. prie Lenkų bibliotekos Paryžiuje įkurto Leidybos komiteto, ypač jo nario, garsaus emigracijos veikėjo Waleriano Kalinkos vardu. Kalinka surado finansinę paramą, o vienas iš jo darbų - 1853 m. Paryžiuje anonimiškai išspausdinta monografija "Galicya i Kraków pod panowaniem austryackiem" - tapo Akelaičio darbo prototipu. Išsamiai analizuojami rankraštį sudarantys penki netolygios apimties skyriai: 1) "Kraj i Mieszkańcy" (59 lapai), 2) "Sprawa włościańska na Litwie" (133 lapai), 3) "Kościół" (106 lapai), 4) "Oświata" (47 lapai), 5) "Sądownictwo i Administracja" (25 lapai). Akelaičio akiratyje - Lenkijos ir Lietuvos valstybės žlugimo procesas ir naujas Lietuvos politinis, ekonominis bei juridinis būvis Rusijos imperijos valdžioje. Bendra autoriaus nuostata paprasta - idealizuojama bendros Lenkijos ir Lietuvos valstybės praeitis ir smerkiama Rusijos valdžios vykdoma politika. Tekstas netolygus, fragmentiškas, pasigendama logiško sukauptos medžiagos dėstymo plano: iš pradžių itin santūrus, objektyvus, "statistinis", taigi pretenduojantis į moksliškumą, ilgainiui, ypač pradedant 3–iuoju skyriumi "Kościół", vis labiau primena publicistinį, labai emocionalų rašinį. Veikale jaučiama politinė įtampa, priešsukiliminės nuotaikos, tad jis gerokai politizuotas. Mikalojus Akelaitis is one of the most prominent and contradictory personalities of the 19th century. The contradiction stems from Akelaitis's personal features as well as his way of life, which can be best described in two words: research and politics. [...] One of his large-scale and most outstanding works in history written in 1862 during his first emigration to Paris is Opisanie Wielkiego Ksiestwa Litewskiego (further referred to as OWKL). The genesis and analysis of this particular work kept in the Polish Library in Paris (Biblioteka Polska w Paryžu, also Bibliothèque Polonaise à Paris, further referred to as BPP) has become the key axis of this paper. [...] OWWKL has five sections: 1) "Kraj i Mieszkancy" [the country and its people], 2) "Sprawa wlosciariska na Litwie" [the issue of peasantry in Lithuania], 3) "Košciol" [Church], 4) "Oswiata" [Education], 5) "Sadownictwo i Administracja" [Courts of Justice and Administration]. [...] In section 1 most attention is devoted to the geography of the country, its statistical data and admin istrative division. In section 2 Akelaitis gave an exhaustive description of the law of 1861 abolishing serfdom and characterised the members of its editorial board. In section 3 the author expresses his idealistic attitude towards the time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and tolerance of its rulers. Section 4 deals with one of the most important issues of Russian politics in the country. Section 5 is the last and the shortest; it is also incomplete. Differently from the two previous sections, thedevelopment of ideas in the section is similar to the first two sections: in legal and administrative areas he praises the times of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and resents the laws and the court system imposed by Russia.[...]

Su Abiejų Tautų Respublikos padalijimais susijusių dokumentų publikavimo istorija trunka jau du šimtus metų. XVIII amžiaus pabaigoje – XIX amžiaus pradžioje Abiejų Tautų Respublikoje dokumentų tekstai buvo publikuojami ne tik švietėjiškais ir moksliniais, bet ir politiniais bei ideologiniais tikslais. Abiejų Tautų Respublikoje publikuoti dokumentai, kuriuos Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybė buvo priversta pasirašyti su Rusija, Prūsija ir Austrija. Šių dokumentų publikacijos pirmiausia buvo skirtos ugdyti pilietinei Lenkijos ir Lietuvos visuomenės sąmonei. Didžioji dalis dokumentų, skelbtų to meto tarptautinių sutarčių rinkiniuose, buvo sutrumpinti dokumentų publikacijų periodiniuose leidiniuose variantai. Dalis dokumentų, remiantis ankstesnėmis publikacijomis, buvo publikuota pakartotinai. Pirmosios publikacijos, paremtos archyviniais šaltiniais, buvo paskelbtos Austrijoje ir Rusijoje tik antrojoje XIX amžiaus pusėje. Su Abiejų Tautų Respublikos padalijimais susijusius dokumentus tarptautinių sutarčių tyrinėtojai tuo metu publikavo daugiausia moksliniais tikslais, tačiau politinių interesų buvo paisoma ir tuomet. Antrojoje XIX amžiaus pusėje ir XX amžiuje dokumentai, susiję su Abiejų Tautų Respublikos padalijimais, įėjo į fundamentalius tarptautinių sutarčių rinkinių sudėtį. Vis dėlto iki pat šiol neparengtas nė vienas specialus dokumentų rinkinys, kuriame sutartys dėl XVIII amžiaus Abiejų Tautų Respublikos padalijimų būtų skelbiamos sistemingai ir atitiktų istorinių šaltinių publikacijoms keliamus reikalavimus. The history of publication of documents related to the divisions of the Republic of the Two Nations is two centuries long. At the end of the 18th–beginning of the 19th c., texts of documents of the Republic of the Two Nations were published not only for educational and scientific purposes, but also in pursue of political and ideological goals. The publication presents documents of the Republic of the Two Nations, which the Polish-Lithuanian state was forced to sign with Russia, Prussia and Austria. The publications of these documents were aimed at developing civil consciousness of Polish and Lithuanian societies. The major part of those documents published in collections of the then international treaties was shortened variants of document publications in periodic issues. Part of those documents was republished based on earlier publications. First publications based on archive sources were published in the second half of the 19th c. in Austria and Russia. At those times, researchers of international treaties published documents related to the divisions of the Republic of the Two Nations mostly for scientific reasons; however, political interests were also taken into consideration. In the second half of the 19th c. and the 20th c., documents related to the divisions of the Republic of the Two Nations were included into the collections of fundamental international treaties. However, so far, not special collection of documents, which would systematically present treaties on the 18th c. divisions of the Republic of the Two Nations and correspond to the requirements for publications of historical sources, has been compiled.
