An important goal of evolutionary and conservation biology is the identification of units below the species level, such as Evolutionarily Significant Units (ESUs), providing objectively delimited units for species conservation and management. In this study we tested the hypothesis that Cuvier’s dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus)—a species broadly distributed across several biomes and watersheds of South America—is comprised of different ESUs. We analyzed mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences of 206 individuals and 532 unlinked ddRAD loci of 20 individuals chosen from amongst the mitochondrial haplogroups. Analysis of the cytochrome b sequences revealed four mitochondrial clusters, while STRUCTURE analysis of ddRAD loci detected three genomic clusters with different levels of mixture between them. Using the Adaptive Evolutionary Conservation (AEC) framework we identified three ESUs: “Amazon”, “Madeira-Bolivia” and “Pantanal”; one of them composed of two different Management Units (MUs), “Madeira” and “Bolivia”. In general, based on the comparisons with other crocodilian species, genetic diversity of each lineage was moderate however, the Madeira MU showed fivefold lower genetic diversity than other geographic groups. Considering the particularities of each Paleosuchus palpebrosus conservation unit, we recommend that the conservation status of each is evaluated separately. Tropical biodiversity is largely underestimated and in this context the broadly distributed species are the most likely candidates to harbor distinct evolutionary lineages. Thus, we suggest that conservation research should not neglect species that are generally considered of Least Concern by IUCN due to the taxon’s broad geographic distribution.

- Abstract
All public organization require infotechnological structures that facilitate their processes and update their operation, although many have invested in technologies, still remain stagnant in productivity and competitiveness, one of the reasons could be the failure to pay attention to the value of the information, from its systematization to its management. From this perspective, the objective of this article is to define challenges of systematized information in strengthening public organizations, under a theoretical investigation, through review of bibliographic and hemerographic materials related to the object of study. The results determine the need to systematize the information for its management, align the network organization, to connect it in its entirety and be able to face the challenges, including taking advantage of processed information to achieve transparency, control and right decisions, to understand the public official with a networked environment, convert citizens into data, and offer services that meet their needs, achieve effectiveness and efficiency to improve public management, positioning the organization in society. - Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the pathogenicity of Metarhizium anisopliae (Ma) and Beauveria bassiana (Bb) isolates, obtained from adult Ctenocephalides canis, the dog flea, under laboratory conditions. Nine, monosporic cultures were isolated. Each were pathogenic when exposed by immersion at a concentration of 1x108 conidia/ml, causing between 10-100% mycosis at ten days post-inoculation. Four isolates identified as Bb9, Bb6, Ma9 and Ma10, were the most pathogenic as mycosis reached 100%, which places them as potential candidates to be used as biological control agents. We developed forensic nuclear SNPs for the side-necked turtle, Phrynops geoffroanus, using next-generation sequencing-based genotyping. We created a reduced-representation library for 23 individuals representing four previously identified lineages of P. geoffroanus using the ddRAD methodology for sequencing on the IonTorrent PGM. We analyzed the sequence data using the Stacks pipeline. We found 811 loci containing 1380 private SNPs. Of these, 473 were fixed in lineages 1, 2 and 3, or with frequency >0.91 in lineage 4. Seventy-three SNPs could be useful for forensics purpose (assignment of individuals to lineage of origin) using traditional PCR-based genotyping methods.

We isolated and characterized 10 new microsatellites loci for Paleosuchus trigonatus using ION TORRENT Sequencing Technology. We tested the transferability of these loci to three related species of the subfamily Caimaninae, and used these bi-parental markers to test population structure and genetic diversity of two populations of P. trigonatus impacted by hydroelectric dam construction on the Madeira (N = 16) and Xingu (N = 16) rivers. We also investigated the transferability of these markers to three related species: Paleosuchus palpebrosus (N = 5), Caiman crocodilus (N = 6) and Melanosuchus niger (N = 6). The genetic diversity of P. trigonatus was low in both the Madeira (He: 0.535 ± 0.148) and Xingu (He: 0.381 ± 0.222) populations, but the loci were sufficiently polymorphic to be used in system of mating and kinship studies in P. trigonatus. DAPC analysis with our set of microsatellites loci was able to separate the four species of Caimaninae studied and to detect a shallow genetic structure between Madeira and Xingu populations of P. trigonatus. AMOVA and STRUCTURE analyses using locprior model corroborate this shallow genetic structure. These novel molecular markers will be also useful in conservation genetics and phylogeographic studies of P. trigonatus, since they improve our ability to monitor the putative effects of dams on the loss of genetic diversity and allow us to investigate population dynamics and microevolutionary processes that occurred in the species.

Pollution is a growing environmental problem throughout the world, and the impact of human activities on biodiversity and the genetic variability of natural populations is increasingly preoccupying, given that adaptive processes depend on this variability, in particular that found in the repetitive DNA. In the present study, the mitochondrial DNA (COI) and the distribution of repetitive DNA sequences (18S and 5S rDNA) in the fish genome were analysed in fish populations inhabiting both polluted and unpolluted waters in the northern Amazon basin. The results indicate highly complex ribosomal sequences in the fish genome from the polluted environment because these sequences are involved primarily in the maintenance of genome integrity, mediated by a systematic increase in the number of copies of the ribosomal DNA in response to changes in environmental conditions.

Today, regenerative medicine requires new sources of multipotent stem cells for their differentiation to chondrocytes using the mediums of differentiation available in the market. This study aimed to determine whether the Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) isolated from Mobilized Peripheral Blood (MPB) in sheep using the Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor (G-CSF), have the ability of first acquire a fibroblast-like morphology after being forced out of the bone marrow niche by G-CSF and second, if the cells have the capacity to express collagen type-II α I in primary culture using a human commercial media of differentiation. Six Suffolk male sheep with age of 2 years were mobilized using G-CSF. One subcutaneous injection of 10 mcg per kilogram of bodyweight were administered every 24 h during three consecutive days. At day four, a sample of 20 mL of peripheral blood was harvested, afterwards, monocytes cells were separated by ficoll gradient. The mobilized MSCs were expanded in primary culture in DMEM medium supplemented with 10% adult sheep serum for three weeks and characterized by an antibody panel for surface markers: CD105, CD90, CD73, CD34, and CD45, before and after primary culture. Subsequently, an aliquot of cells in the first pass were cultured in a commercial human chondrogenic medium for three weeks. As a result, the percentage of surface markers for MSCs (CD105, CD90, CD73) in expanded cells in primary culture significantly increased, at the same time a decrease in the markers for hematopoietic cells (CD34 and CD45) was observed and the cells morphology was fibroblast-like. After three weeks of differentiation culture, the immunofluorescence analysis evidenced the expression of collagen-type-II. It was concluded that Mesenchymal Stem Cells isolated from mobilized peripheral blood in sheep have the ability to pre-differentiate into chondral like cells and express collagen type-II when are stimulated with a human commercial chondrogenic medium in monolayer culture.

In this study, Tulio Febres Cordero, in his adolescence (1870-1877), is presented in this study, a stage in which he receives principles of life, patterns and moral codes prevailing in the society of the time and in the a family of social and historical merideña roots. Especially interested in exploring how Tulio Febres Cordero, became a moral agent through the rules of conduct and moral codes he received in this process of subjectivation. This process is reviewed, using a letter sent by the father to the son in the year 1873, from a Foucauldian perspective related to “care and selftechnique” in relation to the technique of correspondence, epistolary genus, which has charged importance as a source of study not only literary but historical and in this case, allows us to investigate the principles of life given to the son in what Foucault called archeology, serving us in addition to the genealogy to revise part of that process of formation. 260-267 Cuatrimestral

The objective of this study was to isolate entomopathogenic fungus from fleas (Ctenocephalides canis Curtis) collected from Cannis familiaris specimens. From 60 collected fleas, two dead insects presented white mycelia growth on the body surface, changing to a creamy color as time passed; the insects presented a mummified aspect, typical characteristic caused by entomopathogenic fungus. This fungus was identified as Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo-Crivelli) Vuillemin by their mycelia characteristics, macro- and micro-morphology. Up to our knowledge, this is the first report of entomopathogenic fungus isolated from adult C. canis fleas.

is a speciose genus, with about 90 species distributed worldwide, 37 of which occurring in the Neotropical region. In Colombia, A. metica is the only species of the genus recorded so far, which was initially described with material collected in the Colombian Orinoquia and more recently recorded in the southeastern Brazil. In the present study, Ablabesmyia opita sp. n. from the Colombian Andes is described and illustrated based on adult males collected at the inter-andean valley of Magdalena river basin. In addition, an updated taxonomic key for Neotropical species and a map of Ablabesmyia records in Colombia are provided. The male of the new species is similar to that of A. laurindoi but can be easily distinguished by the coloration patterns of the legs, the shape of the sternapodeme and by the number of antepronotals. Species discovery methods utilizing coalescent-based approaches are powerful tools for detecting cryptic lineages within morphological conservative groups, thus being an important methodology of integrative taxonomic research. Crocodilians are a classic example of morphologically conserved group where coalescence-based species delimitation analyses resulted in the discovery of cryptic lineages and potentially new species. In this study, we used several single locus species discovery methods to analyze the phylogenetic diversity of the most widespread alligatorid genus of the Neotropics, the genus Caiman. We analyzed 479 specimens representing all named taxa, with the exception of Caiman crocodilus apaporiensis, and known geographic distribution of these taxa. We observed high lineage diversity within the Caiman crocodilus/yacare complex, ranging from 7 to 10 lineages, and three lineages within Caiman latirostris. We also provide a new dated phylogeny for all the delimited lineages. Oligocene and Miocene events triggered the diversification of the major lineages, with latter Pleistocene events influencing the final diversification of the genus. We demonstrate that the discovered lineages within the Caiman complex are compatible with being species and as such are candidates for an integrated taxonomic analysis. However, it is important to highlight that independent of the future recognition of these lineages as species, it is extremely important to protect these cryptic lineages as unique evolutionary entities, many of which are highly threatened by habitat loss from dam construction projects, tailing dam collapses, mining, agriculture and agricultural run-off across all of South America.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Most methods that investigate fecal contamination of vegetables do not address the origin of contamination. Because host-specific sequences are conserved in their genomes, bacteria of the order Bacteroidales are regarded as alternative indicators for tracking sources of contamination of produce. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of host-specific Bacteroidales markers to identify sources of fecal contamination and to determine whether detection of Bacteroidales markers correlated with traditional fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) in strawberries and tomatoes. Tomato and strawberry samples were artificially contaminated with human and animal feces, which contained 6 to 7 log CFU Bacteroidales per 100 mL and 3 to 6 log CFU/100 mL of the bacterial indicators Escherichia coli, total coliforms, and Enterococcus. FIB were enumerated by standard procedures. Universal and host-specific Bacteroidales markers were detected and quantified by quantitative PCR, and the detection range was 1.35 to 10.35 logarithmic gene copies, which corresponds to a limit of detection of two Bacteroidales cells. Few correlations between levels of Bacteroidales and levels of FIB were observed. For most of the contaminated tomato and strawberry samples, Bacteroidales levels were higher than FIB levels, and detection of FIB was highly variable. Detection of Bacteroidales markers was similar to total coliforms when ≥0.1 mg of feces was inoculated. These indicators were better than E. coli and Enterococcus for detection of fecal contamination in produce. The host-associated Bacteroidales markers were detected at an inoculum of 1 mg of feces per produce item (except those from bovine feces in strawberry). All of the host-associated Bacteroidales markers were detected at an inoculum of 10 mg of feces per produce item. Thus, Bacteroidales markers are promising tools to identify sources of fecal contamination; however, more research is required for their potential use to reduce the risks of contamination of produce. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract. Educative classroom practice has shown that chemistry teaching-learning processes and competences development are strongly influenced for the lack of time in classrooms, few hours of the subject considered in the curriculum and lack of interest among students in developing activities due to the fact that they find them repetitive and inducing to a rote learning under a plain format and with few relations with everyday life. In this paper is presented a proposal in which is applied the use of tools related with the use of information and communication technologies (ICTS) as a pedagogic and didactic strategie out from the use of virtual learning environments like moodle platform that can help students to develop competences not only in “nomenclature and formulation of organical compounds” in this particular case, but also in the use of the ICTS as a way to generate in the students a conceptual conflict and facilitate them, from cooperative learning and the interaction with virtual media, conceptual change and the development of metacognitive processes. Félix María Ruiz was born in Republic of the Dominican Republic in 1815. Over time, the childhood friends are, mature and with a bigger intellectual baggage, and mainly, on the part of Juan Pablo Duarte, with very clear political ideals regarding their homeland. Thus began a long exile to Don Félix María and his Trinitarian partners. It was not only their homeland what he lost; there were there his dearer possessions: his family, wife and three children. After wandering for several countries he landed in Merida, where he lays, carries out several occupations and he marries for second time. 137-160 semestral

Aves Island Wildlife Refuge is the second most important nesting colony for green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Caribbean. Even though some research projects have led to a solid source of knowledge about this species’ ecology, little information about its breeding biology is available. This study was focused on assessing the breeding characteristics and hatching success for the nesting population during the 2010 season in Aves Island, Venezuela. Nesting data were collected along the entire beach line from July 31st to November 09th by nightly patrols, in order to determine green turtle nesting activity. All females were tagged and measured to compare the new recruits with remigrant females. We determined the number of nesting females, the size and spatial distribution of clutches, the incubation period, the internesting and remigration periods, as well as the hatching and emergence success for first time in Aves Island. Beach dimensions were measured to determine nest density. We recorded 1 106 nesting females with 436 remigrant females individually identified. The female population had an average curved carapace length of 112.2 ± 5.5 cm. The average clutch size was of 124 ± 25.7 eggs, with an estimated clutch frequency of 2 nests/females, and an average inferred clutch period of 12.4 days. We estimated the total number of clutches to be 2 261 ± 33 and a total of 1 130 ± 17 nesting females for the 2010 season. For in situ nests, we observed a Mean hatching and emergence success of 54.4 ± 30.0% and 74.3 ± 29.2%, respectively. There was a positive correlation between the morphometrics of nesting females and clutch size, and also significant differences in the number of clutches and hatching and emergence success among the different island sections of the study site. Our results are only a first attempt at characterizing this site population, but have great value for establishing conservation priorities within the context of national management plans. Care should be taken in extrapolating our data to other years, as there is a need to continue monitoring the nesting beach and developing conservation strategies directed at all life-stages of the population.

The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is probably the more well-known sea turtle due to its historical food value and significant amount of research that has been for its conservation,is declared national and internationally as an endangered species of Extinction. In order to determine reference hematological values for Ch. mydas a total of thirty turtles were captured placing nets in the line of coast from Gulf of Venezuela, high Guajira. Blood samples were taken from the dorsal cervical sinuses in all the animals. Red Blood Cell (RBC), White Blood Cell (WBC), Packed Cell Volume (PCV), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), differential count of leukocytes were measured. The curved carapace length (CCL) and curved carapace width (CCW) were measured in order to estimate the turtles´age. The values averages of the hematological parameters were RBC (0.42 × 10(6)µL), WBC (6.16 × 10³µL), PCV (29.40%), MCV (730.17 fL), Heterophils (82.9%-5.1023 × 10³/µL), Lymphocytes (14.7%-0.9081 × 10³/µL), Eosinophils (0.47%-0.0236 × 10³/µL), Monocytes (1.97%-0.1259 × 10³/µL). These results coincide with the reference intervals documented for the species. The variability in some of the parameters evaluated could be attributed to factors as age, sex, reproductive state, stress, temperature, capture technique and analysis methods.
