Objectives: This study was conducted in order to determine the effect on halitosis and the antibacterial effect against halitosis‐causing bacteria of the mouthwash made of the natural material, Glycyrrhiza uralensis (G. uralensis) extract. Materials and Methods: A randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study was conducted on 60 patients who visited M dental clinic located in Busan, South Korea, excluding those with systemic disease that may induce halitosis. There were 30 patients classified to the saline gargle group and the remaining 30 patients were classified to the G. uralensis extract gargle group. In addition, their level of halitosis and halitosis‐causing bacteria were measured. They visited the dental clinic on a fasted state at baseline before gargle application (Baseline), immediately after gargle application (Treatment) and 5 days after gargle application (After 5 Days). For clinical indicators, participants were tested for halitosis and bacteria immediately after waking up without brushing their teeth and without hydration. Results: The prevalence of halitosis decreased in the G. uralensis extract gargle group compared to the saline gargle group at Treatment and After 5 Days. In cases with pseudo halitosis, there was a significant decrease in halitosis‐causing bacteria when G. uralensis extract gargle was applied (p < 0.05). Conclusions: It was identified that using a mouthwash made with G. uralensis extract is effective for halitosis improvement and reduction of halitosis‐causing bacteria. Therefore, using a mouthwash containing G. uralensis extract, it will be effective in improving bad breath and oral hygiene will be possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many rural people in developing countries rely on herbal remedies, but these derive from plants which may be subject to heavy metal pollutants. Lead, cadmium and arsenic are confirmed carcinogens and may produce toxic effects if present above the recommended levels in medicinal herbs. The study assessed the uptake and associated health risk of Pb, Cd and As by Euphorbia prostrata exposed to different contaminating sources. The levels of Pb were within safe limits of the World Health Organization both in soil (200 mg/kg) and plant (10 mg/kg). Cadmium concentration in soil from all sites exceeded the allowable range (0.6 mg/kg), exceeding the safe permissible limit of 0.3 mg/kg in plants growing in contaminated sites. Objective: To explore the neuroprotective effects and mechanism of Tanreqing Injection (TRQ) on treating ischemic stroke based on network pharmacology and in vivo experimental validation. Methods: The chemical compounds of TRQ were retrieved based on published data, with targets retrieved from PubChem, Therapeutic Target Database and DrugBank. Network visualization and analysis were performed using Cytoscape, with protein-protein interaction networks derived from the STRING database. Enrichment analysis was performed using Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes Genomes pathway and Gene Ontology analysis. In in vivo experiments, the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model was used. Infarct volume was determined by 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium hydrochloride staining and protein expressions were analyzed by Western blot. Molecular docking was performed to predict ligand-receptor interactions. Results: We screened 81 chemical compounds in TRQ and retrieved their therapeutic targets. Of the targets, 116 were therapeutic targets for stroke. The enrichment analysis showed that the apelin signaling pathway was a key pathway for ischemic stroke. Furthermore, in in vivo experiment we found that administering with intraperitoneal injection of 2.5 mL/kg TRQ every 6 h could significantly reduce the infarct volume of MCAO rats (P<0.05). In addition, protein levels of the apelin receptor (APJ)/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) pathway were increased by TRQ (P<0.05). In addition, 41 chemical compounds in TRQ could bind to APJ. Conclusions: The neuroprotective effect of TRQ may be related to the APJ/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Objective: To investigate the effect of low concentration of Wenyang Tonglin Decoction (WTD) on the binding conditions of R45 plasmid conjugative transfer under liquid phase conjugation and its mechanism. Methods: Escherichia coli CP9 (R45) and Staphylococcus aureus RN450RF were cultured in medium containing WTD, and their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were obtained. Using promoter fusion technology, E. coli CP9 (R45) containing a promoter fusion was obtained. β-Galactosidase activity of TrfAp and TrbBp was tested, and the mRNA expression of regulatory factors (TrbA, KorA, and KorB) was detected by real-time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results: The MIC of E. coli CP9 (R45) was 400 g/L and that of S. aureus RN450RF was 200 g/L. When the drug concentration in the culture medium was 200 g/L, the highest number of conjugants was (3.47 ±0.20) × 107 CFU/mL At 90 h of conjugation, the maximum number of conjugants was (1.15 ±0.06) × 108 CFU/mL When the initial bacterial concentration was 108 CFU/mL, the maximum number of conjugants was (3.47 ± 0.20) × 107 CFU/mL. When the drug concentration was 200 g/L, the β-galactosidase activity of TrfAp and TrbBp significantly increased; the relative quantification of TrbA, KorA and KorB were significantly inhibited. Conclusion: Low concentration of WTD promoted the development of bacterial resistance by affecting promoters and inhibiting the expression of regulatory factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate whether Naoxueshu Oral Liquid (NXS) could promote hematoma absorption in post-craniotomy hematoma (PCH) patients. Methods: This is an open-label, multicenter, and randomized controlled trial conducted at 9 hospitals in China. Patients aged 18–80 years with post-craniotomy supratentorial hematoma volume ranging from 10 to 30 mL or post-craniotomy infratentorial hematoma volume less than 10 mL, or intraventricular hemorrhage following cranial surgery were enrolled. They were randomly assigned at a 1:1 ratio to the NXS (10 mL thrice daily for 15 days) or control groups using a randomization code table. Standard medical care was administered in both groups. The primary outcome was the percentage reduction in hematoma volume from day 1 to day 15. The secondary outcomes included the percentage reduction in hematoma volume from day 1 to day 7, the absolute reduction in hematoma volume from day 1 to day 7 and 15, and the change in neurological function from day 1 to day 7 and 15. The safety was closely monitored throughout the study. Moreover, subgroup analysis was performed based on age, gender, history of diabetes, and etiology of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Results: A total of 120 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned between March 30, 2018 and April 15, 2020. One patient was lost to follow-up in the control group. Finally, there were 119 patients (60 in the NXS group and 59 in the control group) included in the analysis. In the full analysis set (FAS) analysis, the NXS group had a greater percentage reduction in hematoma volume from day 1 to day 15 than the control group [median (Q1, Q3): 85% (71%, 97%) vs. 76% (53%, 93%), P<0.05]. The secondary outcomes showed no statistical significance between two groups, either in FAS or per-protocol set (P>0.05). Furthermore, no adverse events were reported during the study. In the FAS analysis, the NXS group exhibited a higher percentage reduction in hematoma volume on day 15 in the following subgroups: male patients, patients younger than 65 years, patients without diabetes, or those with initial cranial surgery due to ICH (all P<0.05). Conclusions: The administration of NXS demonstrated the potential to promote the percentage reduction in hematoma volume from day 1 to day 15. This intervention was found to be safe and feasible. Objective: To identify whether Banxia Xiexin Decoction (BXD) alleviates cerebral glucose metabolism disorder by intestinal microbiota regulation in APP/PS1 mice. Methods: Forty-five 3-month-old male APP/PS1 mice were divided into 3 groups using a random number table (n=15 per group), including a model group (MG), a liraglutide group (LG) and a BXD group (BG). Fifteen 3-month-old male C57BL/6J wild-type mice were used as the control group (CG). Mice in the BG were administered BXD granules by gavage at a dose of 6 g/(kg•d) for 3 months, while mice in the LG were injected intraperitoneally once daily with Liraglutide Injection (25 nmol/kg) for 3 months. Firstly, liquid chromatography with tandem-mass spectrometry was used to analyze the active components of BXD granules and the medicated serum of BXD. Then, the cognitive deficits, Aβ pathological change and synaptic plasticity markers, including synaptophysin (SYP) and postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD95), were measured in APP/PS1 mice. Brain glucose uptake was detected by micropositron emission tomography. Intestinal microbial constituents were detected by 16S rRNA sequencing. The levels of intestinal glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and cerebral GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R), as well as the phosphoinositide-3-kinase/protein kinase B/glycogen synthase kinase-3β (PI3K/Akt/GSK3β) insulin signaling pathway were determined by immunohistochemical (IHC) staining and Western blot analysis, respectively. Results: BXD ameliorated cognitive deficits and Aβ pathological features (P<0.01). The expressions of SYP and PSD95 in the BG were higher than those in the MG (P<0.01). Brain glucose uptake in the BG was higher than that in the MG (P<0.01). The intestinal microbial composition in the BG was partially reversed. The levels of intestinal GLP-1 in the BG were higher than those in the MG (P<0.01). Compared with the MG, the expression levels of hippocampal GLP-1R, Akt, PI3K and p-PI3K in the BG were significantly increased (P<0.01), while the levels of GSK3β were reduced (P<0.01). Conclusion: BXD exhibited protective effects against Alzheimer's disease by regulating the gut microbiota/GLP-1/GLP-1R, enhancing PI3K/Akt/GSK3β insulin signaling pathway, and improving brain glucose metabolism. While research on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the general population is expanding, there remains a scarcity of studies investigating the efficacy and utilisation of CAM practices, specifically in the paediatric population. In accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO), the prevalence of the parental utilisation of CAM in their dependents is estimated to reach up to 80%. This literature review identified broad, heterogeneous, and inconclusive evidence regarding CAM's applications and effectiveness, primarily attributed to variance in sociodemographic factors and differences in national healthcare systems. Additionally, the review identified a lack of consensus and polarised positions among mainstream professionals regarding the mechanisms of action, applications, and effectiveness of CAM. This narrative review presents varied results concerning the efficacy of most CAM therapies and their applications; however, some evidence suggests potential benefits for acupuncture, yoga, tai chi, and massage in improving physical and mental health. Moreover, the available evidence indicates that meditation may enhance mental health, while reiki may only influence patients' perceptions of comfort. In light of the intricate and multifaceted nature of herbal medicine, it is imperative to assess its efficacy on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the specific compounds and procedures involved. This comprehensive review serves as a valuable resource for health professionals, offering guidance for personalised healthcare approaches that consider the values and beliefs of patients, thereby facilitating integrated, evidence-based practices aimed at enhancing the quality of healthcare services and patient satisfaction. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatments in East Asian traditional medicine (EATM) originate from principles for treating abscesses and carbuncles. Understanding the therapeutic principles of Liu Juan Zi Gui Yi Fang (GYF) is essential for optimizing EATM treatment strategies for IBD, but quantitative analysis is lacking. This study aims to extract quantitative information on therapeutic strategies from GYF and present the EATM conceptual framework for IBD treatment. Oral prescriptions for carbuncles were selected, and their constituent herbs and indications were standardized and tokenized for analysis. An EATM expert group classified prescriptions based on the similarity of herbs and indications. Hierarchical and k-means cluster analyses were performed based on herb similarity. The herb–indication (H-I) network for all prescriptions was constructed. Additionally, H-I subnetworks based on the expert group's classifications and the k-means clustering results were constructed and compared to identify treatment goals and the herbs used for each goal. The results showed that the treatment focused on abscess status, wound healing, and patient's recovery capacity, with 'fever' and 'deficiency' as the main indications addressed by tonifying and anti-inflammatory herbs. The therapeutic principles identified in this study can serve as a foundation for developing future herbal intervention units. Benchalokawichian (BLW) is recognized as a medicinal herb in Thailand and is used for its antipyretic properties. This remedy includes five plant roots: Clerodendrum indicum (CI), Capparis micracantha (CM), Ficus racemosa (FR), Harrisonia perforata (HP), and Tiliacora triandra (TT). The present study investigated the phytochemicals, total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant potential of BLW and its herbal components. Phytochemical screening of the six extracts identified flavonoids, phenolics, and terpenoids. TPC quantification using a spectroscopic method indicated that the TT extract had the most quantity (55.97±0.49 mg of gallic acid equivalent/g). Evaluating total antioxidant capacity through the DPPH free radical scavenging assay revealed that the HP extract showed the most antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value of 23.69±4.05 μg/mL. The FR extract displayed the most active superoxide radical scavenging activity (63.77±1.12% inhibition of superoxide) according to the riboflavin-light-nitroblue tetrazolium assay. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) were used to measure lipid peroxidation, indicating the BLW extract was the most potent (75.30±0.47% inhibition of malondialdehyde). The TT extract exhibited the highest reducing power (0.47±0.023 mM Fe2+/mg) -- measuring the transformation of ferrous to ferric iron in the extract's presence. These preliminary findings suggest that the ethanol root extracts of HP and TT exhibit strong antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals, and the BLW treatment effectively prevents lipid peroxidation. The use of BLW may be beneficial in preventing chronic, non-communicable diseases that are linked to reactive oxygen species, such as diabetes mellitus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ligusticum Chuanxiong, a perennial herb of considerable medicinal value commonly known as Chuanxiong, holds pivotal importance in sliced form for ensuring quality and regulating markets through geographical origin identification. This study introduces an integrated approach utilizing Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to establish an efficient method for rapidly determining the geographical origin of Chuanxiong slices. A dataset comprising 300 samples from 6 distinct origins was analyzed using a 1D-CNN model. In this study, we initially established a traditional classification model. By utilizing the Spectrum Outlier feature in TQ-Analyst 9 software to exclude outliers, we have enhanced the performance of the model. After evaluating various spectral preprocessing techniques, we selected Savitzky–Golay filtering combined with Multiplicative Scatter Correction (S-G + MSC) to process the raw spectral data. This approach significantly improved the predictive accuracy of the model. After 2000 iterations of training, the CNN model achieved a prediction accuracy of 92.22%, marking a 12.09% improvement over traditional methods. The application of the Class Activation Mapping algorithm not only visualized the feature extraction process but also enhanced the traditional model's classification accuracy by an additional 7.41% when integrated with features extracted from the CNN model. BACKGROUND: Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) are being uses more often with cancer patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate attitudes, use and influencing factors of CAM among cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on 407 cancer patients in Turkey. The study was conducted during July-September 2021 using a Questionnaire that included a Complementary, Alternative and Conventional Medicine Attitude Scale (CACMAS). Pearson's Chi-Squared Test, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, and logistic regression were all utilized. RESULTS: The findings revealed that 76.2% of the participants stated that they used CAM methods while undergoing cancer treatment, and 65.2% of those who did so kept from sharing this information to medical professionals. Phytotherapy was the most common CAM method used by patients. The use of CAM was found to be significantly higher among those who were 55–64 years of age, married, secondary school graduates, non-smokers, CAM users before their cancer diagnosis, and who had a family history of cancer (p < 0.05). The participants' average CACMAS scores were 112.20±16.53. Among those who used CAM during treatment, non-smoking, overweight-obese participants had higher CACMAS scores (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Due to the high prevalence of CAM usage among cancer patients and possible interaction effects with chemotherapy medications, it is important for healthcare professionals to assess and educate cancer patients regarding CAM use. Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a common chronic metabolic disease caused by abnormal purine metabolism and uric acid excretion. Despite extensive research on HUA, no clear treatment has been found so far. Improving purine metabolism and promoting uric acid excretion is crucial for the effective treatment of HUA. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions have shown good effects in treating HUA. This article summarizes the latest progress in treating HUA in rats and mice using traditional Chinese medicine and prescriptions, elaborates on the pathogenesis of HUA, explores the application of commonly used traditional Chinese medicine treatment methods and prescriptions, and discusses the previous pharmacological mechanisms. In general, our research indicates that traditional Chinese medicine can effectively relieve the symptoms related to elevated uric acid levels in HUA rats and mice. Many naturally derived compounds are currently used in oncotherapy. Besides official medicine, complementary and alternative medicine practices, including old herbal remedies, are widely used and accepted as additional tools in cancer treatment. Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN), a medicinal herb in Asia, has roots historically used in medicine. This review focuses on key bioactive compounds from AGN roots – decursin, decursinol angelate (DA), and decursinol (DOH). Exploring their source, biosynthesis, and therapeutic mechanisms, the review highlights their role in cancer treatment. Biotechnological strategies for enhanced production and semisynthetic derivatives with anticancer properties are discussed. The study emphasizes the promising pharmacological potential of decursin, DA, and DOH in various therapeutic applications, particularly cancer treatment. The review also underscores innovative approaches to increase production and explores semisynthetic derivatives as a promising avenue for future natural product‐based drug discovery. Background: Obesity imposes a significant socioeconomic burden owing to its high prevalence. In response to the adverse outcomes associated with conventional pharmacotherapy and the challenges of low adherence to lifestyle interventions, herbal medicine has surfaced as an actively utilized approach for weight loss. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the characteristics and influencing factors of herbal medicine users for weight loss in adults. Methods: Overall, 22,080 participants were included based on data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2010 to 2019. Simple logistic regression analyses were used to derive the associations between herbal medicine use for weight loss and individual characteristics. Three models were constructed utilizing multiple logistic regression analyses to assess the associations between herbal medicine use for weight loss and the combined characteristics of predisposing, enabling, and need factors according to Andersen's model. Results: In the full adjustment model, women, younger adults, those with higher incomes, and individuals reporting higher levels of perceived stress were more prone to use herbal medicine for weight loss in the past year. Adults who identified body image as being fat/very fat, those who consumed alcohol, and those classified as severely obese by body mass index were also more prone to use herbal medicine for weight loss. In particular, adults with a higher rate and amount of weight loss in the past year were more likely to use herbal medicine for weight loss compared to those experiencing weight gain/no changes/loss of 0-3 kg. Conclusion: Our study was the first to derive the characteristics and influencing factors of herbal medicine users for weight loss among adults. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory loss and cognitive impairment. It severely affects the quality of life of victims. The prevalence of AD has been increasing in recent years. Therefore, it is of great importance to elucidate the pathogenic mechanism of AD and search for effective therapeutic approaches. Gut microbiota dysbiosis, an altered state of gut microbiota, has been well known for its involvement in the pathogenesis of AD. Much effort has been made in searching for approaches capable of modulating the composition of gut microbiota in recent years. Herbal medicines have attracted extensive attention in recent decades for the prevention and treatment of AD. Here, we gave an overview of the recent research progress on the modulatory effects of herbal medicines and herbal formulae on gut microbiota as well as the possible beneficial effects on AD, which may provide new insights into the discovery of anti-AD agents and their therapeutic potential for AD through modulating the composition of gut microbiota. Rehmannia glutinosa is widely recognized as a prominent medicinal herb employed by practitioners across various generations for the purpose of fortifying kidney yin. Within Rehmannia glutinosa, the compound known as catalpol (CAT) holds significant importance as a bioactive constituent. However, the protective effects of CAT on kidneys, including ameliorative effects on chronic kidney disease — most prominently renal anemia and renal fibrosis — have not been clearly defined. In this study, the kidney injury model of NRK-52E cells and C57BL/6N male mice was prepared by exposure to aristolochic acid I (AA-I), and it was discovered that CAT could ameliorate oxidative stress injury, inflammatory injury, apoptosis, renal anemia, renal fibrosis, and other renal injuries both in vivo and in vitro. Further treatment of NRK-52E cells with Nrf2 inhibitors (ML385) and activators (ML334), as well as NF-κB inhibitors (PDTC), validated CAT’s ability to target Nrf2 activation. Furthermore, the expression of phosphorylated NF-κB p65, IL-6, and Cleaved-Caspase3 protein was inhibited. CAT also inhibited NF-κB, and then inhibited the expression of IL-6, p-STAS3, TGF-β1 protein. Therefore, CAT can regulate Nrf2/NF-κB signaling pathway, significantly correct renal anemia and renal fibrosis, and is conducive to the preservation of renal structure and function, thus achieving a protective effect on the kidneys. Finding environmentally friendly, effective and residue‐free alternatives to antibiotics has become a research priority. This is due to the ban on antibiotics in animal feed. Curcumin is a polyphenol extracted from the rhizome of turmeric that has antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Curcumin has been widely demonstrated as a traditional flavoured agent and herbal medicine in the fight against diseases. In recent years, curcumin has been extensively studied in animal production, especially in poultry production. This article reviews the source, structure, metabolism and biological functions of curcumin and focuses on the application of curcumin in poultry production. In terms of production performance, curcumin can improve the growth performance of poultry, increase the egg production rate of laying hens and alleviate the negative effects of heat stress on the production performance of poultry and livestock. In terms of meat quality, curcumin can improve poultry meat quality by regulating lipid metabolism and antioxidant capacity. In terms of health, curcumin can improve immunity. Since mycotoxins have been a major problem in poultry production, this article also reviews the role of curcumin in helping poultry resist toxins. The tribe Leonureae (Lamioideae, Lamiaceae) is distributed in Eurasia and mainly in Central Asia, known as valuable herbal medicine. It comprises ca. 80 species in six genera: the Chaiturus, Lagochilus, Lagopsis, Leonurus, Loxocalyx, and Panzerina. Although the monophyly of Leonureae is well‐supported, the relationships within the tribe remain unclear, and the non‐monophyly of Lagopsis and Leonurus needs to be revised. Leonureae is particularly diverse in the arid regions of Central Asia, and it has been indicated that the diversification of Lagochilus and Panzerina was affected by the Qinghai‐Xizang Plateau's uplift and Quaternary climate oscillation. Background: Qingdu Fang (QDF) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula with remarkable clinical effect in the treatment of HR-HPV, but its mechanism remains unclear. In this study, UPLC-QTOF-MS was used to detect its components, network pharmacology was used to explore the traditional Chinese medicine monomers and their related targets for the treatment of HR-HPV in QDF. Molecular docking and in vitro experiments were performed to verify the results. Methods: QDF constituents and active compounds were identified using UPLCQTOF-MS analysis. TCMSP and GeneCard databases were used to identify active components, targets, and potential therapeutic targets in HR-HPV. PPI network was constructed using the String database to analyze protein-protein interactions. Cytoscape3.7.2 was used to construct PPI networks, while GO enrichment and KEGG pathway analyses with R. The effect of QDF on H8 cell proliferation was measured using the CCK-8 method, and apoptosis and cell cycle was assessed with flow cytometry. The effects of QDF on PI3K/AKT pathway were detected by Western blotting. Results: A total of 27 compounds were identified on QDF by UPLC-QTOF-MS. Base on Network pharmacology, a total of 254 target genes are involved in the action of QDF on cervical HR-HPV. PPI analysis suggested that TP53, JUN, AKT1, STAT3, TNF and IL6 were potential targets for QDF treatment of HR-HPV. Molecular docking shows that two compounds have strong binding activity with AKT1. CCK-8 and morphological observation have shown that QDF inhibits H8 cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Flow cytometry experiments suggest that QDF induces apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in H8 cells. Western blotting experiments reveal that QDF inhibits the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Conclusion: QDF has a multi-faceted therapeutic approach for HR-HPV, targeting inflammation, oxidation, and apoptosis. It induces apoptosis in H8 cells by inhibiting the PI3K/AKT pathway. Objectives: Our objective was to compare the effectiveness of Traditional Chinese herbal Kampo medicine Goreisan in improving recurrence in patients with chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). Methods: Eligible randomized controlled trials prospective trials, and retrospective cohort studies were systematically identified through searches of PubMed, Cochrane Library, and CNKI from inception to March 2024. Following the application of predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria to screen the available studies, main outcome measures were rigorously extracted. RevMan v5.4 software was utilized to evaluate the overall recurrence rate, employing a random-effects model to calculate pooled odds ratios with the Mantel-Haenszel estimation method. Inter-study heterogeneity was assessed using the CochranQ (Chi-square) test and I2 statistics. Funnel plots were used to evaluate publication bias. Results: Among the 48 articles initially screened for citation, eight were ultimately selected for inclusion in the study. The results of our network meta-analysis indicate that patients with newly diagnosed Chronic subdural hematoma experienced a significantly reduced recurrence rate when treated with Goreisan compared to standard neurosurgical treatment (OR: 0.72; 95% CI 0.61-0.86; p = 0.00003). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence rates of complications, including general fatigue, allergic reactions, hepatic dysfunction, and interstitial pneumonia (OR: 7.21; 95% CI 0.37-141.29; p = 0.19). Conclusion: Traditional medicine Goreisan was effective in reducing CDSH recurrence rates. For clinical treatment, it provides a high level of evidencebased medicine. It is also necessary to conduct multicenter randomized controlled trials with dose adjustments to determine whether Goreisan interventions improve neurological function or prognosis. Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy of the head and neck. Zeng-Sheng-Ping, composed of Sophora tonkinensis Gagnep., Bistorta officinalis Delarbre, Sonchus arvensis L., Prunella vulgaris L., Dioscorea bulbifera L., and Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz., was regarded as an anti-cancer drug with significant clinical efficacy, but was discontinued due to liver toxicity. Our research group developed a modified Zeng-Sheng-Ping (ZSP-M) based on original Zeng-Sheng-Ping that exhibited high efficiency and low toxicity in preliminary investigations, although its pharmacodynamic mechanism is still unclear. Here, we aimed to elucidate the pharmacodynamic material basis of ZSP-M and investigate its chemopreventive effect on OSCC by modulating tumor associated macrophages (TAMs). Methods: Components of ZSP-M were characterized using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Chemopreventive effect induced by ZSP-M against experimental oral cancer was investigated using the 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide precancerous lesion mouse model. RNA sequencing analysis was used to gain a global transcriptional view of the effect of ZSP-M treatment. A cell co-culture model was used to study the targeted effect of ZSP-M on TAMs and the biological properties of OSCC cells and to detect changes in TAM phenotypes. The binding of ZSP-M active compounds to TNF alpha induced protein 6 (TNFAIP6) protein was analyzed by molecular docking and dynamic simulation. Results: Forty main components of ZSP-M were identified, the most abundant of which were flavonoids. ZSP-M inhibited the degree of epithelial dysplasia in precancerous lesions by inhibiting the expression of the TNFAIP6 and CD163 proteins in the precancerous lesions of the tongue. ZSP-M inhibited proliferation, colony formation, migration and invasion of SCC7 cells by targeting TAMs. ZSP-M reduced the expression of CD163+ cells, inhibited the expression of TNFAIP6 protein, Arg1 mRNA and Il10 mRNA in TAMs, and reduced IL-10 cytokine release in the co-culture environment. This effect was maintained after the addition of recombinant TNFAIP6 protein. Computer simulations showed that trifolirhizin and maackiain are well-connected to TNFAIP6. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are involved in multiple aspects of plant life, including plant growth, development, and response to environmental stimuli. They are also vital for the formation of secondary metabolites in various plants. Salvia miltiorrhiza is a famous herbal medicine and has been used commonly for > 2000 years in China, as well as widely used in many other countries. S. miltiorrhiza is extensively used to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in clinical practices and has specific merit against various diseases. Owing to its outstanding medicinal and commercial potential, S. miltiorrhiza has been extensively investigated as an ideal model system for medicinal plant biology. Tanshinones and phenolic acids are primary pharmacological constituents of S. miltiorrhiza. As the growing market for S. miltiorrhiza, the enhancement of its bioactive compounds has become a research hotspot. S. miltiorrhiza exhibits a significant response to various PGRs in the production of phenolic acids and tanshinones. Here, we briefly review the biosynthesis and signal transduction of PGRs in plants. The effects and mechanisms of PGRs on bioactive compound production in S. miltiorrhiza are systematically summarized and future research is discussed. Background: In recent years, global climate change in tandem with increased human activity has resulted in habitat degradation or the migration of rare medicinal plants, potentially impacting the quality of medicinal herbs. Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus is a valuable bulk medicinal material in Northwest China. As the demand for this medicinal herb continues to increase in both domestic and international markets, ensuring the sustainable development of high-quality Astragali Radix is important. In this study, the maximum entropy (Maxent) model was applied, thereby incorporating 136 distribution records, along with 39 environmental factors of A. membranaceus var. mongholicus, to assess the quality zonation and potential distribution of this species in China under climate change. Results: The results showed that the elevation, annual mean temperature, precipitation of wettest month, solar radiation in June, and mean temperature of warmest quarter were the critical environmental factors influencing the accumulation of astragaloside IV and Astragalus polysaccharide in A. membranaceus var. mongholicus. Among the twelve main environmental variables, annual mean temperature, elevation, precipitation of the wettest month, and solar radiation in November were the four most important factors influencing the distribution of A. membranaceus var. mongholicus. In addition, ecological niche modelling revealed that highly suitable habitats were mainly located in central and western Gansu, eastern Qinghai, northern Shaanxi, southern Ningxia, central Inner Mongolia, central Shanxi, and northern Hebei. However, the future projections under climate change suggested a contraction of these suitable areas, shifting towards northeastern high-latitude and high-elevation mountains. Conclusions: The findings provide essential insights for developing adaptive strategies for A. membranaceus var. mongholicus cultivation in response to climate change and can inform future research on this species. By considering the identified environmental factors and the potential impacts of the predicted climate changes, we can visualize the regional distribution of high-quality Radix Astragali and develop conservation strategies to protect and restore its suitable habitats. Nigella sativa has solid historical importance as a medicinal herb and is widely used in the bakery industry. The study revealed that the defatted black cumin meal (DBCM) possesses a high nutritious composition and amino acid profile, such as Leu, Lys, Arg, Phe, and Glu. The supplementation effect of wheat flour with defatted black cumin meal (DBCM) at levels of 5%–25% was explored on the cookies' nutritional, functional, and organoleptic attributes. Moreover, the present work was conducted to assess the in vivo protein quality of defatted black cumin meal (DBCM)‐supplemented cookies using the albino rat's experimental modeling for 10 days. Rheological characterization suggested a solid elastic behavior for all cookies dough with elevation in G' (138,652–230,926 Pa), G" (34201–45,092 Pa), and G* values due to protein addition. The functional characteristics of the flour blends showed that DBCM addition significantly (p ≤ .05) improved oil (70.56%–165%) and water (84.83%–232.67%) absorption capacities, emulsion, and foaming stability. The physicochemical and organoleptic assessment of the cookies exposed that a 20% level of substitution of DBCM produced acceptable cookies. The net protein utilization (NPU), protein efficiency ratio (PER), true digestibility (TD), and biological value (BV) significantly differ from each other among all the supplementation diet groups with 0%–25% DBCM. Fritillaria unibracteata (FRU) belongs to the genus Fritillaria of the Liliaceae family. It is one of the original plants of the Chinese medicinal material "Chuanbeimu" and also a biological resource featured in the Tibetan Plateau of China. The dried bulbs of FRU are used in traditional Chinese medicine. The chemical constituents of FRU that have been isolated and identified include alkaloids, sterols, organic acids and their esters, nucleosides and volatile oils. FRU has antitussive, expectorant, anti-asthmatic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, acute lung injury-reducing, antifibrosis, antitumor, and other pharmacological effects. This valuable plant has an extremely high market demand, and over the years, due to over-exploitation, FRU has now been listed as a key species that is endangered and scarcely cultivated in China as a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. However, research on FRU is rare, and its effective components, resource control, and mechanisms of action need further study. Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and debilitating disease that not only leads to disability and associated condition but also impacts one's ability to maintain a professional life. People's acceptance and utilization of medicinal plants (MPs) play an important role in managing their treatment process. As a result, this study aims to investigate the use of medicinal herbs among patients with MS. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 MS patients who visited a private clinic and the MS Association in Kerman, Iran in 2021. A questionnaire comprising questions about sociodemographic information, disease variables, and aspects of MPs usage was utilized for data collection. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 20 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). The Chi-square test was employed to identify any association between demographic characteristics and MPs usage. To determine the prevalence of plant use in a specific area and the consensus among informants, the use value (UV) and Informant consensus factor (Fic) were calculated. Results: The study revealed a high prevalence of MPs usage among MS patients. Chamomile (66.6%) and golegavzaban (62.0%) were the most commonly used plants with the highest UV indices (0.88 and 0.82 respectively), while St. John's wort and licorice were rarely used (0.67% and 4% respectively). Participants cited pursuing a healthier lifestyle as the primary reason for using MPs (24%). St. John's wort, lavender, and chamomile were the most satisfying plants (100%, 100%, and 53.0% respectively). Chamomile had the highest Fic too. Most patients were motivated to get MPs from their relatives. Conclusions: Given the widespread use of MPs among MS patients, neurologists should enhance their knowledge in this area to guide patients away from seeking advice from non-professionals. Background: Huangkui Lianchang Decoction (HLD) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula for treating ulcerative colitis (UC). However, its mechanism of action remains poorly understood. The Study aims to validate the therapeutic effect of HLD on UC and its mechanism by integrating network pharmacology, bioinformatics, and experimental validation. Methods: UC targets were collected by databases and GSE19101. The active ingredients in HLD were detected by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. PubChem collected targets of active ingredients. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) networks were established with UC-related targets. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia (KEGG) of Genes and Genomes enrichment were analyzed for the mechanism of HLD treatment of UC and validated by the signaling pathways of HLD. Effects of HLD on UC were verified using dextran sulfate sodium (DDS)-induced UC mice experiments. Results: A total of 1883 UC-related targets were obtained from the GSE10191 dataset, 1589 from the database, and 1313 matching HLD-related targets, for a total of 94 key targets. Combined with PPI, GO, and KEGG network analyses, the signaling pathways were enriched to obtain IL-17, Toll-like receptor, NF-κB, and tumor necrosis factor signaling pathways. In animal experiments, HLD improved the inflammatory response of UC and reduced UC-induced pro-inflammatory factors such as Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), and interleukin 6 (IL-6). HLD suppressed proteins TLR4, MyD88, and NF-κB expression. Conclusions: This study systematically dissected the molecular mechanism of HLD for the treatment of UC using a network pharmacology approach. Introduction: Chronic inflammation is the major pathological feature of Atherosclerosis(As). Inflammation may accelerate plaque to develop, which is a key factor resulting in the thinning of the fibrous cap and the vulnerable rupture of plaque. Presently, clinical treatments are still lacking. It is necessary to find a safe and effective treatment for As inflammation. Simiaoyongan Decoction (SMYA) has potential anti-inflammatory and plaque protection effects. This protocol aims to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and mechanism of SMYA for patients with carotid atherosclerotic plaque. Methods/design: The assessment of SMYA clinical trial is designed as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The sample size is 86 cases in total, with 43 participants in the intervention group and the control group respectively. The intervention group takes SMYA, while the control group takes SMYA placebo. The medication lasts for 14 days every 10 weeks, with a total of 50 weeks. We will use carotid artery high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) to measure plaque. The plaque minimum fiber cap thickness (PMFCT) is adopted as the primary outcome. The secondary outcomes include plaque fiber cap volume, volume percentage of fiber cap, lipid-rich necrotic core (LRNC) volume, volume percentage of LRNC, internal bleeding volume of plaque, internal bleeding volume percentage of plaque, plaque calcification volume, volume percentage of plaque calcification, lumen stenosis rate, average and a maximum of vessel wall thickness, vessel wall volume, total vessel wall load, carotid atherosclerosis score, hs-CRP, IL-1β and IL-6, the level of lipid profiles and blood glucose, blood pressure, and body weight. Discussion: We anticipate that patients with As plaque will be improved from SMYA by inhibiting inflammation to enhance plaque stability. This study analyzes plaque by using HR-MRI to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of SMYA. Moreover, we conduct transcriptome analysis, proteomic analysis, and metagenomic analysis of blood and stool of participants to study the mechanism of SMYA against As plaque. This is the first prospective TCM trial to observe and treat As plaque by inhibiting inflammatory reaction directly. If successful, the finding will be valuable in the treatment of As plaque and drug development, especially in the "statin era". Background: Depression, anxiety, and insomnia are prevalent in older people and are associated with increased risk of mortality, dependency, falls and reduced quality of life. Prior to or whilst seeking treatment, older people often manage these symptoms or conditions using products purchased over the counter (OTC), such as medication or herbal products. This review aims to map the evidence available for OTC medications, herbal medicines and dietary supplements for depression, anxiety and insomnia in older adults. Methodology: We carried out a scoping review, including searches of five databases to identify relevant randomised controlled trials (inception-Dec 2022). We took an inclusive approach to products to represent the wide range that may be available online. Trials were summarised according to condition and product. Results: We included 47 trials and 10 ongoing trial protocols. Most targeted insomnia (n = 25), followed by depression (n = 20), and mixed conditions (n = 2). None evaluated products targeted at anxiety alone. Where reported, most products appeared to be safe for use, but studies rarely included people with multiple comorbidities or taking concomitant medication. Some types of melatonin for insomnia (n = 19) and omega-3 fatty acids for depression (n = 7) had more substantive evidence compared to the other products. Conclusion: There is a substantial gap in evidence for OTC products for anxiety in older people. This should be addressed in future trials. Research should also focus on products that are widely used, and these need to be tested in older populations that are similar to those who would use them in practice. The concern about the quality of medicinal herbs is becoming important due to the poor quality of commercial products like cosmetics, functional foods, and natural medicine produced from them. However, there is a lack of modern analytical methods to evaluate the constituents of P. macrophyllus until the moment. This paper reports an analytical method based on UHPLC-DAD and UHPLC-MS/MS MRM methods to evaluate the ethanolic extracts of P. macrophyllus leaves and twigs. 15 main constituents were identified using a UHPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS profiling. Subsequently, a reliable analytical method was established and successfully used to quantitate the constituent's content using four marker compounds in leaf and twig extracts of this plant. The result obtained from the current study demonstrated the secondary metabolites and the variety of their derivatives in this plant. Background: Natural compounds can positively impact health, and various studies suggest that they regulate glucose‒lipid metabolism by influencing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). This metabolism is key to maintaining energy balance and normal physiological functions in the body. This review explores how SCFAs regulate glucose and lipid metabolism and the natural compounds that can modulate these processes through SCFAs. This provides a healthier approach to treating glucose and lipid metabolism disorders in the future. Methods: This article reviews relevant literature on SCFAs and glycolipid metabolism from PubMed and the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). It also highlights a range of natural compounds, including polysaccharides, anthocyanins, quercetins, resveratrols, carotenoids, and betaines, that can regulate glycolipid metabolism through modulation of the SCFA pathway. Results: Natural compounds enrich SCFA-producing bacteria, inhibit harmful bacteria, and regulate operational taxonomic unit (OTU) abundance and the intestinal transport rate in the gut microbiota to affect SCFA content in the intestine. However, most studies have been conducted in animals, lack clinical trials, and involve fewer natural compounds that target SCFAs. More research is needed to support the conclusions and to develop healthier interventions. Conclusions: SCFAs are crucial for human health and are produced mainly by the gut microbiota via dietary fiber fermentation. Eating foods rich in natural compounds, including fruits, vegetables, tea, and coarse fiber foods, can hinder harmful intestinal bacterial growth and promote beneficial bacterial proliferation, thus increasing SCFA levels and regulating glucose and lipid metabolism. By investigating how these compounds impact glycolipid metabolism via the SCFA pathway, novel insights and directions for treating glucolipid metabolism disorders can be provided. Introduction: Scutellariae Radix (SR), derived from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for clearing heat and cooling blood. It has been used as a traditional herbal medicine and is popular as a functional food in Asian countries today. Methods: In this study, UPLC-Q-TOF-MS was first employed to identify the chemical components in the ethanol extract of SR. Then, the extraction process was optimized using star point design-response surface methodology. Fingerprints of different batches and processed products were established, and chemical markers were screened through a combination of various artificial neural network models. Finally, network pharmacology and molecular simulation techniques were utilized for verification to determine the quality markers. Results: A total of 35 chemical components in SR were identified, and the optimal extraction process was determined as follows: ultrasonic extraction with 80% methanol at a ratio of 120:1 for 70 minutes, with a soaking time of 30 minutes. Through discriminant analysis using various artificial neural network models, the samples of SR could be classified into two categories based on their growth years: Kuqin (dried roots of older plants) and Ziqin (roots of younger plants). Moreover, the samples within each category could be further clustered according to their origins. The four different processed products of SR could also be distinguished separately. Finally, through the integration of network pharmacology and molecular simulation techniques, it was determined that baicalin, baicalein, wogonin, norwogonin, norwogonin-8-O-glucuronide, skullcapflavone II, hispidulin, 8, 8"-bibaicalein, and oroxylin A-7-O-beta-Dglucuronide could serve as quality markers for SR. Discussion: The primary factors affecting the quality of SR were its growth years. The geographic origin of SR was identified as a secondary factor affecting its quality. Processing also had a significant impact on its quality. The selected quality markers have laid the foundation for the quality control of SR, and this research strategy also provides a research paradigm for improving the quality of TCM. Background: The high virulence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has triggered global health and economic concerns. The absence of specific antiviral treatments and the side effects of repurposed drugs present persistent challenges. This study explored a promising antiviral herbal extract against SARS-CoV-2 from selected Thai medicinal plants based on in vitro efficacy and evaluated its antiviral lead compounds by molecular docking. Methods: Twenty-two different ethanolic-aqueous crude extracts (CEs) were rapidly screened for their potential activity against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) as a surrogate using a plaque reduction assay. Extracts achieving ≥ 70% anti-PEDV efficacy proceeded to the anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity test using a 50% tissue culture infectious dose method in Vero E6 cells. Molnupiravir and extract-free media served as positive and negative controls, respectively. Potent CEs underwent water/ethyl acetate fractionation to enhance antiviral efficacy, and the fractions were tested for anti-SARS-CoV-2 performance. The fraction with the highest antiviral potency was identified using liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC–HRMS). Molecular docking analyses of these compounds against the main protease (Mpro) of SARS-CoV-2 (6LU7) were performed to identify antiviral lead molecules. The top three hits were further evaluated for their conformational stability in the docked complex using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Results: The water fraction of mulberry (Morus alba Linn.) leaf CE (WF-MLCE) exhibited the most potent anti-SARS-CoV-2 efficacy with low cytotoxicity profile (CC50 of ~ 0.7 mg/mL), achieving 99.92% in pre-entry mode and 99.88% in postinfection treatment mode at 0.25 mg/mL. Flavonoids and conjugates were the predominant compounds identified in WF-MLCE. Molecular docking scores of several flavonoids against SARS-CoV-2 Mpro demonstrated their superior antiviral potency compared to molnupiravir. Remarkably, myricetin-3-O-β-D-galactopyranoside, maragrol B, and quercetin 3-O-robinobioside exhibited binding energies of ~ − 9 kcal/mol. Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its associated end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are significant health problems that pose a threat to human well-being. Renal fibrosis is a common feature and ultimate pathological outcome of various CKD leading to ESRD. The Astragalus mongholicus Bunge and Panax notoginseng formula (A&P) is a refined compound formulated by our research group, which has been clinically administered for over a decade and has demonstrated the ability to improve the inflammatory state of various acute or chronic kidney diseases. However, the underlying mechanism by which A&P ameliorates renal fibrosis remains unclear. Methods: We established a mouse model by surgically ligating the unilateral ureter to induce renal injury in vivo. And we utilized renal in situ electroporation of a plasmid with low LncRNA A33 expression to establish the unilateral ureteral obstruction(UUO)mouse model. In vitro, we stimulated primary tubular epithelial cells(pTEC) injury using TGF-β1, siRNA-A33, and pcDNA3.1-A33 plasmids were transfected into pTECs to respectively knockdown and overexpress LncRNA A33, and both in vitro and in vivo models were intervened with A&P. Results: The results demonstrated that A&P effectively alleviated renal fibrosis in mice. Subsequent findings indicated high expression of LncRNA A33 in the kidneys of UUO mice and TGF-β1-induced renal tubular cells. In situ, renal electroporation of a plasmid with reduced LncRNA A33 expression revealed that inhibiting LncRNA A33 significantly improved renal fibrosis in UUO mice. Moreover, A&P effectively suppressed LncRNA A33 expression both in vitro and in vivo. Subsequent downregulation of LncRNA A33 in renal tubular epithelial cells resulted in the downregulation of numerous fibrotic markers, a significant inhibition of LncRNA A33, and a notable reduction in downstream ferroptosis signaling. Cell experiments demonstrated that A&P improved renal fibrosis in UUO mice by inhibiting LncRNA A33 and downregulating ferroptosis signaling. Conclusion: Through the inhibition of LncRNA A33 and subsequent downregulation of ferroptosis signaling, A&P showed potential as a therapeutic approach for improving renal fibrosis in UUO mice, providing a potential treatment avenue for CKD. Background: Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen, DS) and Radix Paeoniae Rubra (Chishao, CS) herbal pair (DS-CS) is a famous traditional Chinese combination which has been used as antithrombotic formular for centuries. However, there is still lack of sufficient scientific evidence to illustrate its underlying mechanisms. The purpose of this study is to investigate the antithrombotic effects of DS-CS extract in zebrafish and explore its possible mechanism of action. Methods: The quality of traditional Chinese medicines DS and CS granules was evaluated using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Subsequently, the therapeutic effect of the DS-CS combination and its components, Salvianolic Acid A (SAA) and Paeoniflorin (PF), in various concentrations on thrombosis was experimentally validated. Moreover, the interaction between DS-CS and the thrombosis disease targets was analyzed through network pharmacology, predicting the potential antithrombotic mechanism of DS-CS. Molecular docking and in vivo zebrafish experiments were conducted to validate the predicted targets, with qRT-PCR utilized for target validation. Results: DS-CS exhibited anti-thrombotic effect in zebrafish with concentrations ranging from 25 to 300 μg/mL. The co-administration of PF and SAA at 25 μg/mL each revealed a synergistic antithrombotic effect exceeding that of individual components when contrasted with PHZ treatment. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) analysis identified key genes, including Albumin (ALB), Proto-oncogene tyro-sine-protein kinase Src (SRC), Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9), Caspase-3 (CASP3), Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (KDR), Matrix metalloprotein-ase-2(MMP2), Thrombin (F2), and Coagulation factor Xa (F10), associated with the antithrombotic action of PF and SAA. Furthermore, KEGG pathway analysis indicated involvement of lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis pathways. Molecular docking revealed strong binding of PF and SAA to pivotal hub genes, such as SRC, EGFR, and F10. The experimental findings demonstrated that DS-CS could upregulate the mRNA expression levels of EGFR while inhibiting F10 and SRC mRNA levels, thereby ameliorating thrombotic conditions. Conclusion: This research provided valuable insights into the potential mechanisms underlying the antithrombotic activity of DS-CS. Our findings suggested that PF and SAA could be the key active ingredients responsible for this activity. The antithrombotic effects of DS-CS appeared to be mediated through the regulation of mRNA expression of SRC, EGFR, and F10. Background: Heart failure (HF) is a complex cardiovascular syndrome with high mortality. Santalum album L. (SAL) is a traditional Chinese medicine broadly applied for various diseases treatment including HF. However, the potential active compounds and molecular mechanisms of SAL in HF treatment are not well understood. Methods: The active compounds and possible mechanisms of action of SAL were analyzed and validated by a systems pharmacology framework and an ISO-induced mouse HF model. Results: We initially confirmed that SAL alleviates heart damage in ISO-induced HF model. A total of 17 potentially active components in SAL were identified, with Luteolin (Lut) and Syringaldehyde (SYD) in SAL been identified as the most effective combination through probabilistic ensemble aggregation (PEA) analysis. These compounds, individually and in their combination (COMB), showed significant therapeutic effects on HF by targeting multiple pathways involved in anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, and anti-apoptosis. The active ingredients in SAL effectively suppressed inflammatory mediators and pro-apoptotic proteins while enhancing the expression of anti-apoptotic factors and antioxidant markers. Furthermore, the synergistic effects of SAL on YAP and PI3K-AKT signaling pathways were further elucidated. Conclusions: Mechanistically, the anti-HF effect of SAL is responsible for the synergistic effect of anti-inflammation, antioxidation and anti-apoptosis, delineating a multi-targeted therapeutic strategy for HF. Background: Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus is also named Xiebai in China. It is an edible vegetable, and also a famous herb for treating coronary heart disease. Allium chinense G. Don (ACGD) and Allium macrostemon Bunge (AMB) are it botanical sources. The aim of this study was to explore the cardioprotective effects, and decipher the visual spatial distribution and absolute content of primary metabolites derived from these two herbs. Methods: H9c2 cells were used to perform the hypoxia-reoxygenation (H/R)-induced myocardial injury model. Their protective effects were evaluated by apoptosis levels. Furthermore, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry imaging approach (MALDI-TOF MSI) was carried out to present the spatial location of primary metabolites including fatty acids, amino acids, carotenoids, and vitamins in these two Allium herbs. Multiple analytical methods were applied to perform quantitative analysis of these primary metabolites in AMB and ACGD bulbs by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS). Results: First, AMB and ACGD extracts both could increase the cell viability in H9c2 cells, and attenuate H/R-induced injury. They markedly decreased apoptosis, accompanied by activating the BCL-2/BAX pathway. Further, MALDI-TOF MSI-based relative quantification results showed several amino acids, fatty acids, carotenoids, and vitamins were largely rich in the tunics and outside scales of fresh bulbs, while some primary metabolites were abundant in their developing flower buds. Absolute quantification results displayed total contents of amino acids in ACGD bulbs were higher than those in AMB, while total contents of fatty acids and vitamins provides opposite trends in these two Allium herbs. The total contents of carotenoids and trace elements showed no significant differences between AMB and ACGD samples. Conclusions: This study would be helpful to understand the myocardial injury protection effects of these two Allium herbs, and the spatial accumulation and quantitative content levels of their main nutrients. Edible flowers are a potential source of bioactive ingredients and are also an area of scientific research. Particularly noteworthy are Cyani flos, which have a wide range of uses in herbal medicine. The below study aimed to investigate the influence of selected soluble fiber fractions on the selected properties of physical and biochemical powders obtained during spray drying a water extract of Cyani flos. The drying efficiency for the obtained powders was over 60%. The obtained powders were characterized by low moisture content (≤4.99%) and water activity (≤0.22). The increase in the addition of pectin by the amount of 2–8% in the wall material resulted in a decrease in hygroscopicity, water solubility, and protection of flavonoids and anthocyanins both before and after digestion in the tested powders in comparison to the sample with only inulin as a carrier. Objective: The purpose of this article was to investigate the exerting protective effect of smilagenin on MPP+-induced apoptosis in SH-SY5Y cells. Methods: In the experiment, PD cell model was constructed using MPP+ treated human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. SH-SY5Y cells in logarithmic growth phase were taken and divided into four groups: the Control group (Control), the MPP+ group (model group), the smilagenin group (10 μM), and the MPP++ smilagenin group (3 mm,10 μM). The cell proliferation assay (CCK-8) was firstly used to detect the optimal concentration of smilagenin action and the effect on SH-SY5Y cell viability. The effect of smilagenin on the apoptosis rate of SH-SY5Y cells was detected by AnnexinV-FITC/PI double staining assay, and the protein expression of apoptosis-related proteins Bax, Bcl-2 was detected by protein immunoblotting assay. Results: The cell viability assay determined 10 μM/mL of smilagenin as the added concentration for the subsequent experiments. Compared with the control group, the MPP+ group showed significantly lower cell viability (P＜0.001), higher apoptosis rate(P＜0.001), and significantly higher expression of apoptosis-related protein Bax/Bcl-2(P＜0.01). Compared with the MPP+ group, cell viability was significantly higher in the MPP++ smilagenin group (P<0.001), apoptosis rate was significantly lower(P<0.01), apoptosis-related protein Bax/Bcl-2 expression was significantly lower (P<0.01). Conclusion: Smilagenin can inhibit MPP+-induced apoptosis in SH-SY5Y cells, which may be related to its regulation of protein expression of apoptosis-related proteins Bax and Bcl-2. Dried ginger possesses both defensive and stimulant characteristics, which effectively raise the internal temperature and enhance the Yang energy. Fresh ginger is more hydrating than dried ginger, highly skilled at heating the Middle-jiao, alleviating pain, halting bleeding, and managing diarrhea. Dried ginger possesses the ability to alleviate coldness when consumed in a heated form, as well as to alleviate diarrhea when consumed in a heated form. It thrives in warm conditions and has a tendency to revert back to its warm nature. The medicinal plant Abrus precatorius L. was traditionally used in the Siddha and Ayurvedic systems of medicine in India. The Indian center of origin holds a vast variability in its seed color. The objective of this study was to assess the total monomeric anthocyanin, flavonol, as well as the antioxidative potential, protein content and ash content among the accessions. A total of 99 accessions conserved in the Indian National Genebank were used in this study. The methods used for the estimation of total monomeric anthocyanin, flavonol, as well as the antioxidative potential, protein content and ash content were the pH differential method, Oomah method, Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Potential, Dumas method and gravimetric method, respectively. The completely black colored accession was recorded with highest total monomeric anthocyanin (51.95 mg/100 g of cyanidin 3-glucoside equivalent) and flavonol content (66.41 mg/g of quercetin equivalent). Red + black colored accessions have recorded the maximum value with respect to antioxidants (14.18 mg/g of gallic acid equivalent). The highest amount of protein content was found in a completely white colored accession (20.67%) and the maximum ash content was recorded in red + black colored accession (4.01%). AbstractAnisomeles malabarica, the commonly called “Malabar catmint” is a wild tropical plant belonging to the family Lamiaceae. Traditionally this plant is used as mosquito repellent, snakebite antidote and to treat fever and gastrointestinal discomfort by the people of South India. It is an important endemic plant used in the indigenous medicine systems of India such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani in various formulations. The rich phytochemistry of A. malabarica includes cembrane terpenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, flavones, glycosides, and other bioactive compounds contributing for its medicinal potential. Extracts and metabolites of A. malabarica shows wide range of significant pharmacological effects in combating cancer cells through apoptosis, inhibiting viral agents (HPV and SARS-CoV-2), immune regulation, and DNA protection. The phytocompounds of A. malabarica were also reported for anti-malarial, anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, anti-epileptic, anti-diabetic, anti-parasitic activity, and hepatoprotective properties. This systematic review summarizes the therapeutic properties with botanical characteristics, ethnobotany, and phytochemistry of A. malabarica. It also documents the ingrained traditional use of A. malabarica in religious custom in southern states of India. Depression is a prevalent mental disorder that significantly diminishes quality of life and longevity, ranking as one of the primary causes of disability globally. Contemporary research has explored the potential pathogenesis of depression from various angles, encompassing genetics, neurotransmitter systems, neurotrophic factors, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, inflammation, and intestinal flora, among other contributing factors. In addition, conventional chemical medications are plagued by delayed onset of action, persistent adverse effects, and restricted therapeutic efficacy. In light of these limitations, the therapeutic approach of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has gained increasing recognition for its superior effectiveness. Numerous pharmacological and clinical studies have substantiated TCM's capacity to mitigate depressive symptoms through diverse mechanisms. In this exploratory study, we investigated whether yokukansan affects the steady‐state blood concentrations of donepezil, risperidone, and the major metabolites of both drugs in a real‐world clinical setting.A non‐randomized, open‐label, single‐arm study examining drug–drug interactions was conducted. Fifteen dementia patients taking donepezil for at least 4 weeks and eight schizophrenia patients taking risperidone for at least 2 weeks were orally administered 2.5 g of yokukansan three times a day before or between meals, and blood samples were collected before and 8 weeks after starting co‐treatment with yokukansan. Plasma concentrations of donepezil, risperidone, and each metabolite were measured using high‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry and compared before and after the 8‐week administration of yokukansan.The plasma concentrations of donepezil and its metabolites (6‐O‐desmethyl‐donepezil, 5‐O‐desmethyl‐donepezil, and donepezil‐N‐oxide), risperidone, and its metabolite paliperidone did not differ before and after the 8‐week treatment with yokukansan.The findings of this study show that the concomitant use of yokukansan may have little clinical impact on the steady‐state blood levels of donepezil and risperidone in patients with dementia or schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to develop a three-dimensional (3D) cell model in order to evaluate the effectiveness of a traditional Chinese medicine decoction in the treatment of arthritis. Chondrocytes (ATDC5) and osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) were 3D printed separately using methacryloyl gelatin (GelMA) hydrogel bioinks to mimic the natural 3D cell environment. Both cell types showed good biocompatibility in GelMA. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was added to the cell models to create inflammation models, which resulted in increased expression of inflammatory factors IL-1β, TNF-α, iNOS, and IL-6, and decreased expression of cell functional genes such as Collagen II (COLII), transcription factor SOX-9 (Sox9), Aggrecan, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), RUNX family transcription factor 2 (Runx2), Collagen I (COLI), Osteopontin (OPN), and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2). The created inflammation model was then used to evaluate the effectiveness of Dangguiniantongtang (DGNT) decoctions. The results showed that DGNT reduced the expression of inflammatory factors and increased the expression of functional genes in the cell model. In summary, this study established a 3D cell model to assess the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) decoctions, characterized the gene expression profile of the inflammatory state model, and provided a practical reference for future research on TCM efficacy evaluation for arthritis treatment.
