- Abstract
Motorcycles are the main form of urban transport in some low- and-middle-income countries and dominate traffic. In high-income countries they are used for both transport and recreation. There are complex relationships among motorcycle type, rider characteristics, purpose of riding and distance ridden which influences the magnitude and nature of the resulting safety issues. Inexperience and risk-taking combine with the lack of protection provided to riders and road environment deficiencies to increase the likelihood and severity of crashes. Wearing good quality helmets and road improvements are the most promising measures to improve motorcyclist safety.
