Abstract
- Recent decisions by Australian and New Zealand cities to discontinue shared e-scooter services have sparked concerns about safety and public nuisance. However, instead of implementing tougher policing or outright bans, researchers suggest that technology and public education can better manage these issues. Solutions such as geo-fencing, speed-limiters, and educating riders about the rules can be more effective and cost-efficient. Additionally, there is a need for clearer and consistent regulations across different states and better communication from e-scooter providers. It is important to note that private and shared e-scooters are used by different demographics and have different safety features. Despite negative perceptions, studies show that a majority of users and non-users see value in e-scooters as a public resource. [Extracted from the article]
