The present study compares the bioavailability of vitamin B 12 (B 12 ) of dairy products or synthetic B 12 , using the pig as an experimental model for humans. Eleven pigs were used in a cross-over design to assess the net portal drained viscera (PDV) flux of blood plasma B 12 after ingestion of tofu (TF; devoid of B 12 ), Swiss cheese (SC), Cheddar cheese (CC), yogurt (YG), and synthetic B 12 (TB 12 ; TF supplemented with cyanocobalamin), providing a total of 25 µg of B 12 each. PDV blood plasma flow for SC and CC were higher than for TF and TB 12 ( p ≤ 0.04) whereas YG was higher than TF ( p = 0.05). Porto-arterial difference of blood plasma B 12 concentrations were higher for CC and TB 12 than for TF and YG ( p ≤ 0.04) but not different from SC ( p ≥ 0.15). Net PDV flux of B 12 was only different from zero for CC. However, the net PDV flux of B 12 for CC was not different from SC or TB 12 . Cumulative net PDV flux of B 12 for SC, TB 12 , and CC were 2.9, 4.4, and 8.3 µg 23 h post-meal, corresponding to a bioavailability of 11.6%, 17.5%, and 33.0%, respectively. In conclusion, CC had the best bioavailability of B 12 among the tested dairy products or compared to synthetic B 12 .

Case Summary: An indoor 9-year-old castrated male domestic cat was referred with a 4 month history of increased upper airway noise. Computed tomography revealed a nasopharyngeal polypoid mass, which was removed endoscopically with basket forceps. Histopathology was compatible with a polypoid granulomatous pharyngitis with Cryptococcus -like organisms. This was supported by a positive serum latex cryptococcal antigen agglutination test (LCAT). Minimal inflammation of the nasal tissue was noted on histopathology, with no evidence of fungus. Following endoscopic removal of the mass, the patient was treated with systemic antifungal medication (itraconazole). One year after diagnosis, the LCAT titer was negative and the cat remained free of clinical signs., Relevance and Novel Information: This case report emphasizes the importance of considering Cryptococcus species as a potential etiology in cats presented with signs of nasopharyngeal obstruction with an isolated nasopharyngeal polypoid mass, even if kept indoors., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest: The authors do not have any potential conflicts of interest to declare.

The costochondral junction constitutes a potential site of infection in septic foals and it could be favored by thoracic trauma. Standard radiographs and ultrasonography are useful tools for diagnosis of this condition and ultrasound-guided needle aspiration could permit the definitive confirmation of infection.

Growth performance, metabolic variables, and meat quality were measured in 78 growing-finishing pigs using supplements of 0 (C), or 0.2% of DL-methionine (M), and three combinations of folic acid [mg/kg] and cyanocobalamin [microg/kg], respectively 0 and 0 (V0), 10 and 25 (V1), and 10 and 150 (V2) in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement. Feed conversion was lower (p = 0.05) in M than in C pigs during the growing period (0-4 weeks). Both V1 and V2 treatments increased plasma vitamin B12 (p < 0.01) and decreased plasma homocysteine (p < 0.01). Plasma 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolates were the lowest, highest and intermediate in V0, V1 and V2 pigs (p < 0.04), respectively. In V2 meat, folates were 32% higher, vitamin B12, 55% higher and homocysteine, 28% lower than in V0 (p < 0.01). Oxidative stability of the fresh meat was similar among treatments during a storage period of 42 days. Therefore, methionine supplements improved growth performance during the growing period. Vitamin supplements interacted with the methionine cycle pathway, increased vitamin content of pork meat but did not improve oxidative stability of the fresh meat during storage.

The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of early dexamethasone treatment on pain-related peptides at an early stage in the development of neuropathic pain induced by implantation of a sciatic nerve cuff in Sprague Dawley rats (body weight 250 to 350 g). The rats were tested for touch sensitivity with the use of von Frey filaments before and 3 d after cuff implantation (n = 12) or sham surgery (n = 6). Half of the cuff-implanted rats received dexamethasone, 1 mg/kg intraperitoneally, 1 h after surgery. Spinal cords were collected on the 3rd day after surgery, and the lumbar enlargement was processed for the detection of selected peptides (neurotensin, substance P, cholecystokinin [CCK], vasoactive intestinal peptide, and calcitonin gene-related peptide) by means of liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. The right sciatic nerve of each rat was collected, fixed, and stained for histopathological evaluation. Except for neurotensin, all the peptides showed an increased concentration with neuropathic pain; however, the differences were significant (P < 0.05) only for substance P and CCK. In the animals treated with dexamethasone, mechanical allodynia was less pronounced (P < 0.01), and only the concentration of substance P was decreased significantly (P < 0.05). Sciatic nerve sections showed a decrease in C (P < 0.01) and Adelta (P < 0.03) fibres with neuropathic pain and a nearly normal percentage of C fibres after dexamethasone treatment. The dexamethasone-treated animals also had less inflammation detectable microscopically at the nerve constriction site compared with cuff-implanted animals that were not treated with dexamethasone. Our results suggest that in the early stages of neuropathic pain induced by an inflammatory process, dexamethasone may be a useful treatment and that substance P plays an important role in pain perception.

Methylprednisolone (MP) was evaluated for the treatment of intracerebral hemorrhage in a Sprague-Dawley rat model of cerebral hematoma induced by subcortical injection of collagenase. At 1 and 24 h after the injection, MP was administered intraperitoneally (IP) at a concentration of 10, 35, or 100 mg/kg. Control groups received saline IP at 1 and 24 h after the intracerebral injection of collagenase (positive controls) or saline (negative controls). Motor behaviour 24 h before and 24 h and 48 h after the intracerebral injection was evaluated by means of a neurologic exam and a rotarod treadmill test. The animals were euthanized at 48 h; brain water content was determined in half of the rats, and histopathological studies were done in the other half. Compared with the positive controls, the animals with collagenase-induced hematoma performed significantly better on the neurologic exam after treatment with 100 mg/kg of MP and on the rotarod test after treatment with 35 or 100 mg/kg of MP. The hematoma volume was significantly smaller (P < 0.002) after all doses of MP; however, the smallest volume was seen with 100 mg/kg. There were significantly fewer neutrophils (P < 0.01) within the hematoma in the MP-treated animals (maximum reduction with 100 mg/kg) than in the positive controls, but the numbers of reactive astrocytes did not differ significantly between the treatment groups. The number of necrotic neurons in the penumbra did not differ between the treatment groups; however, there were significantly fewer (P < 0.005) in the cerebral cortex in the group treated with 100 mg/kg of MP compared with the positive controls. These results suggest that high doses of MP administered shortly after occurrence of a cerebral hematoma are beneficial for the treatment of intracerebral hemorrhage.

A study was conducted to estimate the seroprevalence of Brucella ovis infection in rams in the Estrie and Bas-Saint-Laurent regions (Quebec). Rams sera (n = 258) were serologically evaluated from 224 rams in 30 commercial flocks and from 34 rams at 2 slaughterhouses by using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Epididymides and testes were examined by palpation on farms and microscopically for culled rams. No ram was seropositive to Brucella ovis or had lesions suggestive of brucellosis from the farm or slaughterhouse surveys.
