OBJECTIVES Healthcare systems worldwide have been overburdened by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. Accordingly, hospitals had to implement strategies to profoundly reshape both non-COVID-19 medical care and surgical activities. Knowledge about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiac surgery practice is pivotal. The goal of the present study was to describe the changes in cardiac surgery practices during the health emergency at the national level. METHODS A 26-question web-enabled survey including all adult cardiac surgery units in Italy was conducted to assess how their clinical practice changed during the national lockdown. Data were compared to data from the corresponding period in 2019. RESULTS All but 2 centres (94.9%) adopted specific protocols to screen patients and personnel. A significant reduction in the number of dedicated cardiac intensive care unit beds (−35.4%) and operating rooms (−29.2%), along with healthcare personnel reallocation to COVID departments (nurses −15.4%, anaesthesiologists −7.7%), was noted. Overall adult cardiac surgery volumes were dramatically reduced (1734 procedures vs 3447; P, The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is the world’s largest infectious disease crisis in the last 100 years.

The ichnogenus Ameghinichnus patagonicus described by Casamiquela in 1960, from the Middle Jurassic of Patagonia was the first evidence of a Mesozoic mammal in the continent. The trackways showed a sophisticated, ricochetal locomotion pattern, largely unsuspected at the time and with a surprisingly numerical abundant in the fossil site. Later on, other ichnotaxa were reported from the Middle Jurassic of Argentina and the Early Cretaceous of Brazil, complementing the earlier discoveries. We summarize in this chapter, the footprint records from Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks of South America, that have been putatively related to mammaliaforms, although these assignations can be uncertain to some degree, and perhaps related to non-mammaliaform cynodonts.

Non-mammaliaform cynodonts, formerly called “mammal-like reptiles,” illustrate earlier states of the morphological architecture in the mammalian lineage. These mammalian forerunners show unique character combinations without direct counterparts among living vertebrates reflecting adaptations long lost along the millions of years of cynodont history. The fossil record from South America, originating mostly from the Middle to Late Triassic of Argentina and Brazil, is one of the most prolific worldwide. SA non-mammalian cynodonts are systematically diverse, including approximately 40 species that present great morphological disparity in skull shape, tooth morphology, pattern of tooth replacement, masticatory mechanisms, and locomotory architectures. In this chapter, we summarize the record of SA non-mammaliaform cynodonts.

South American titanosaurians have been central to the study of the evolution of Cretaceous sauropod dinosaurs. Despite their remarkable diversity, the fragmentary condition of several taxa and the scarcity of records outside Patagonia and southwestern Brazil have hindered the study of continental-scale paleobiogeographic relationships. We describe two new Late Cretaceous titanosaurians from Quebrada de Santo Domingo (La Rioja, Argentina), which help to fill a gap between these main areas of the continent. Our phylogenetic analysis recovers both new species, and several Brazilian taxa, within Rinconsauria. The data suggest that, towards the end of the Cretaceous, this clade spread throughout southern South America. At the same locality, we discovered numerous accumulations of titanosaurian eggs, likely related to the new taxa. With eggs distributed in three levels along three kilometres, the new site is one of the largest ever found and provides further evidence of nesting site philopatry among Titanosauria., Hechenleitner et al. describe two new titanosaurians and the finding of numerous accumulations of titanosaurian eggs in La Rioja, Argentina. This study suggests nesting site philopatry among Titanosauria and that this clade was spread throughout southern South America at the end of the Late Cretaceous.

Terrestrial Triassic assemblages are an important component of the heritage of Argentina, particularly because of their diverse record of fossil vertebrates. Triassic basins from western Argentina have a good representation of therapsids, a lineage that includes a series of stem extinct groups plus crown Mammalia. Because of their diversity and abundance, non-mammaliaform cynodonts are the most conspicuous therapsids in the Argentinean Triassic. Cynodonts have been intensively researched in Argentina since the 1960s and continue to provide key advances in the understanding of the evolution and biology of the lineage. Here we offer a summary of Triassic Argentinean non-mammaliaform cynodonts, presenting a historical context of research on this group, and highlighting seminal contributions of Triassic Argentinean cynodonts to the global knowledge of the group. To provide a Gondwanan context we review the cynodont record in the two other places where the lineage is best represented: Brazil and southern Africa (including Madagascar), highlighting commonalities in the Argentinean record with these places. Considering the important role of non-mammaliaform cynodonts in the interpretation of the origin of mammals, we provide a historical account on the contribution of Argentinean, and Gondwanan, cynodonts to the understanding of this topic. This is supplemented with a summary of the progression of phylogenetic ideas and hypotheses for all non-mammaliaform cynodonts and for the most prolific subgroups represented in western Gondwana. Notosuchia is a highly diverse group of crocodyliforms that peaked during the Cretaceous period. Their taxonomic abundance and morphological disparity in the Upper Cretaceous Bauru Group (Bauru Basin, Brazil) is remarkable, with over 20 species reported. The stable carbon and oxygen isotope composition of notosuchian bioapatite from two sites (i.e., the Ponto 1 do Price and Fazenda Tres Antas) in west Minas Gerais State was analyzed to evaluate differences in feeding habits among the taxa found in both localities. Possible environmental stressors are examined, in parallel to sedimentological, paleopedological, and paleontological studies, which indicate a semi-arid to arid climate for the Bauru Group. Multiple tissues of notosuchian crocodyliforms were included in our study, as well as a testudines carapace fragment, lepisosteiform fish teeth and scales, and host rocks. The mineral textures, X-ray diffraction and stable isotope data support preservation of tooth enamel and scale ganoin bioapatite. The δ13C results point to different feeding habits between two terrestrial, carnivore notosuchians, namely a terrestrial source diet for Uberabasuchus terrificus and an aquatic source diet for Campinasuchus dinizi. The δ18Ow for the crocodyliform data was calculated and compared to other Upper Cretaceous sites. Values support dry conditions during the formation of the bioapatite for the Fazenda Tres Antas site and point to the Hateg Basin in Romania, yet likely younger, as a good paleoclimatic analogue.

Pterosaurs were the first vertebrates to evolve powered flight1 and comprised one of the main evolutionary radiations in terrestrial ecosystems of the Mesozoic era (approximately 252–66 million years ago), but their origin has remained an unresolved enigma in palaeontology since the nineteenth century2–4. These flying reptiles have been hypothesized to be the close relatives of a wide variety of reptilian clades, including dinosaur relatives2–8, and there is still a major morphological gap between those forms and the oldest, unambiguous pterosaurs from the Upper Triassic series. Here, using recent discoveries of well-preserved cranial remains, microcomputed tomography scans of fragile skull bones (jaws, skull roofs and braincases) and reliably associated postcrania, we demonstrate that lagerpetids—a group of cursorial, non-volant dinosaur precursors—are the sister group of pterosaurs, sharing numerous synapomorphies across the entire skeleton. This finding substantially shortens the temporal and morphological gap between the oldest pterosaurs and their closest relatives and simultaneously strengthens the evidence that pterosaurs belong to the avian line of archosaurs. Neuroanatomical features related to the enhanced sensory abilities of pterosaurs9 are already present in lagerpetids, which indicates that these features evolved before flight. Our evidence illuminates the first steps of the assembly of the pterosaur body plan, whose conquest of aerial space represents a remarkable morphofunctional innovation in vertebrate evolution. Lagerpetids, bipedal archosaurs that are thought to be related to dinosaurs, are instead a sister group to pterosaurs, and although they have no obvious flight adaptations they share numerous synapomorphies with pterosaurs across the entire skeleton.

A fossil gastric pellet from the Danian ‘Banco Negro Inferior’ of the Salamanca Formation at Punta Peligro Locality (Chubut, Argentina) and its 3D preserved fossil content is studied herein. The structure of the pellet and the condition of the enclosed bones suggest that it was produced by a bird of prey, although birds of any kind are as yet unknown from osteological remains in the Banco Negro ecosystem. The content of the pellet originated from a single anuran individual, representing a new species of the genus Calyptocephalella, is described herein as C. sabrosa sp. nov. The new find highlights the broad temporal, geographical and taxonomic diversity of this frog genus in Patagonia's geological past. Fil: Muzzopappa, Paula. A new fossiliferous site from the Pinheiros-Chiniquá Sequence (Santa Maria Supersequence) with typical tetrapod components of the Dinodontosaurus Assemblage Zone (AZ) is here described. The new site is included in the Faxinal do Soturno Structural Block. The fossil content is characterized by cranial and postcranial material of rauisuchian archosaurs, traversodontid and chiniquodontid cynodonts and dicynodonts, the first occurrence of a large-sized coelacanth fish in the Brazilian Triassic, as well as ichnological material, represented by coprolites. The presence of Luangwa together with Massetognathus raises interesting questions regarding the age of this site included in the Dinodontosaurus AZ when compared with other localities of Southern Brazil, western Argentina and Africa. As in other localities of this AZ, the fossil specimens recovered in Bortolin site exhibit remarkable differences on their fossil preservation: those from the lower portion of the outcrop (distal floodplain) possess a heterogeneous preservation (variable between poor to fairly good) whereas those from the top levels (proximal floodplain) are comparatively better preserved. This new locality, with a large amount of stratigraphically controlled fossils, constitutes a key-locality to study the distribution of Triassic terrestrial tetrapods and to perform comparisons with other sites of this AZ, in which several historical records lack a precise provenance. – Um novo sítio fossilífero é descrito para a Sequência Pinheiros-Chiniquá (Supersequência Santa Maria) com tetrápodes típicos da Zona de Associação (ZA) de Dinodontosaurus. Este novo sítio está incluído no Bloco Estrutural Faxinal do Soturno. O conteúdo fóssil é caracterizado por materiais cranianos e pós-cranianos de arcossauros rauissuquídeos, cinodontes chiniquodontídeos e traversodontídeos e dicinodontes, a primeira ocorrência de um peixe celacanto de grande tamanho, além de materiais icnológicos, representados por coprólitos. A presença de Luangwa juntamente com Massetognathus levanta interessantes questões acerca da idade desse sítio, incluído na ZA de Dinodontosaurus, quando comparado com outras localidades do sul do Brasil, oeste da Argentina e África. Assim como em outras localidades desta ZA, os espécimes fósseis coletados no sítio Bortolin apresentam diferenças notáveis na preservação dos fósseis: fósseis do nível inferior do afloramento (planície de inundação distal) apresentam preservação heterogênea (variando entre pobre a razoavelmente bem preservado) enquanto que nos níveis superiores (planície de inundação proximal), o registro fóssil é comparativamente melhor preservado. Esta nova localidade, com uma grande quantidade de fósseis estratigraficamente controlados, constitui uma localidade chave para o estudo da distribuição dos tetrápodes terrestres do Triássico e sua comparação com outros sítios desta ZA, na qual vários registros históricos carecem de uma proveniência precisa. We present a non-perturbative calculation of the form factors which contribute to the amplitudes for the radiative decays $P\to \ell \bar \nu_\ell \gamma$, where $P$ is a pseudoscalar meson and $\ell$ is a charged lepton. Together with the non-perturbative determination of the virtual photon corrections to the processes $P\to \ell \bar \nu_\ell$, this will allow accurate predictions to be made at $O(\alpha_{em})$ for leptonic decay rates for pseudoscalar mesons ranging from the pion to the $B$ meson. We are able to separate unambiguously the point-like contribution, the square of which leads to the infrared divergence in the decay rate, from the structure dependent, infrared-safe, terms in the amplitude. The fully non-perturbative, $O(a)$ improved calculation of the inclusive leptonic decay rates will lead to significantly improved precision in the determination of the corresponding Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements. Precise predictions for the emission of a hard photon are also very interesting, especially for the decays of heavy $D$ and $B$ mesons for which currently only model-dependent predictions are available to compare with existing experimental data.

Present knowledge of Late Triassic tetrapod evolution, including the rise of dinosaurs, relies heavily on the fossil-rich continental deposits of South America, their precise depositional histories and correlations. We report on an extended succession of the Ischigualasto Formation exposed in the Hoyada del Cerro Las Lajas (La Rioja, Argentina), where more than 100 tetrapod fossils were newly collected, augmented by historical finds such as the ornithosuchid Venaticosuchus rusconii and the putative ornithischian Pisanosaurus mertii. Detailed lithostratigraphy combined with high-precision U–Pb geochronology from three intercalated tuffs are used to construct a robust Bayesian age model for the formation, constraining its deposition between 230.2 ± 1.9 Ma and 221.4 ± 1.2 Ma, and its fossil-bearing interval to 229.20 + 0.11/− 0.15–226.85 + 1.45/− 2.01 Ma. The latter is divided into a lower Hyperodapedon and an upper Teyumbaita biozones, based on the ranges of the eponymous rhynchosaurs, allowing biostratigraphic correlations to elsewhere in the Ischigualasto-Villa Unión Basin, as well as to the Paraná Basin in Brazil. The temporally calibrated Ischigualasto biostratigraphy suggests the persistence of rhynchosaur-dominated faunas into the earliest Norian. Our ca. 229 Ma age assignment to Pi. mertii partially fills the ghost lineage between younger ornithischian records and the oldest known saurischians at ca. 233 Ma., Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo

A new record of noasaurid theropod (Dinosauria, Abelisauria) is here described and compared, including the description of its microstructure. It consists of an almost complete femur of small size (132 mm of preserved length) discovered in 2014 in a new locality at Campina Verde Municipality, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The new locality is named Fazenda Seis Irmãos-Grotas and has also provided thousands of ostracods, few fish remains, and a partial skeleton of an indeterminate baurusuchid mesoeucrocodylian. The bearing-fossil sedimentary sequence is referred to the Adamantina Formation (Bauru Group, Bauru Basin). The femur here presented represents the second putative occurrence of an unusual small-sized noasaurid abelisaur for the Upper Cretaceous Bauru Group. Fil: Martinelli, Agustín Guillermo. The first fossil remains of vertebrates, invertebrates, plants and palynomorphs of the Chorrillo Formation (Austral Basin), about 30km to the SW of the town of El Calafate (Province of Santa Cruz), are described. Fossils include the elasmarian (basal Iguanodontia) Isasicursor santacrucensis gen. et sp. nov., the large titanosaur Nullotitan glaciaris gen. et sp. nov., both large and small Megaraptoridae indet., and fragments of sauropod and theropod eggshells. The list of vertebrates is also composed by the Neognathae Kookne yeutensis gen. et sp. nov., two isolated caudal vertebrae of Mammalia indet., and isolated teeth of a large mosasaur. Remains of fishes, anurans, turtles, and snakes are represented by fragmentary material of low taxonomical value, with the exception of remains belonging to Calyptocephalellidae. On the other hand, a remarkable diversity of terrestrial and freshwater gastropods has been documented, as well as fossil woods and palinological assemblages. The Chorrillo Formation continues south, in the Las Chinas River valley, southern Chile, where it is called Dorotea Formation. Both units share in their lower two thirds abundant materials of titanosaurs, whose remains cease to appear in the upper third, registering only elasmarians (Chorrillo Formation) and hadrosaurs (Dorotea Formation). Above both units there are levels with remains of invertebrates and marine reptiles. It is striking that the dinosaurs of the lower two thirds of the Chorrillo and Dorotea formations are represented by large basal titanosaurs and Megaraptoridae coelurosaurs, being the Saltasaurinae and Aeolosaurinae sauropods and Abelisauridae theropods totally absent. In contrast, these taxa are dominant components in sedimentary units of central and northern Patagonia (e.g., Allen, Los Alamitos, La Colonia formations). Such differences could reflect, in part, a greater antiquity (i.e., late Campanian-early Maastrichtian) for the Chorrillo fossils, or, more probably, different environmental conditions. Thus, knowledge of the biota of the southern tip of Patagonia is expanded, particularly those temporarily close to the K-Pg boundary. Fil: Novas, Fernando Emilio. Our current knowledge of Argentinean titanosaurs outside Patagonia has been effectively limited to the province of Salta (e.g., Saltasaurus). However, several skeletal remains of titanosaurian sauropod dinosaurs have been discovered in the Cretaceous strata of La Rioja Province, northwest Argentina. Herein we describe new titanosaur material from two Upper Cretaceous localities from La Rioja. The first record corresponds to two caudal vertebrae found in the exposures of the Ciénaga del Río Huaco Formation, in the Quebrada de Santo Domingo locality. The largest sample, which includes fragmentary postcranial material of five individuals, was recovered from the Los Llanos Formation, in the Tama locality. The comparative analyses conducted here suggest that most of the specimens should be referred to as Lithostrotia non Saltasaurinae. However, differences between the middle caudal vertebrae from Tama and Quebrada de Santo Domingo suggest that the taxa at each locality are distinct. Fil: Hechenleitner, Esteban Martín. The Late Cretaceous Marilia Formation (Bauru Group, Bauru Basin) is a geological unit that occurs on Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goias, and Mato Grosso do Sul states, Brazil. This formation consists predominantly of paleosols developed in a semiarid/arid environment and recent reappraisal of its formerly known members reduced its lithological composition and geographical distribution. Hence, the Marilia Formation has a very sparse vertebrate fossil record without named species so far. In this contribution we describe a new abelisaurid theropod (Dinosauria) from this unit, namely Kurupi itaata gen. et sp. nov., discovery in the Municipality of Monte Alto, western Sao Paulo State. The holotype MPMA 27-0001/02 consists of three caudal vertebrae and the partial pelvic girdle. Kurupi itaata gen. et sp. nov. shares with other South American abelisaurids fused ischia and caudal vertebrae with long and laterodorsally oriented transverse processes, with fan-shaped distal ends. Autapomorphies of the new theropod include the variation of ∼15° of the inclination of the transverse process between the first (C1) and seventh (C7) caudal vertebra; C1 with anterolaterally projected triangular process placed below the proximodistal mid-portion of the transverse process, and a notch at the anterodistal portion of the transverse process, between a shelf-like process and the anterodistal corner of the transverse process; and anterior caudal vertebrae (present in C1 and C7, inferred in the others) with a cuneiform process, anterodorsally projected, located on the dorsal surface of the transverse process. Phylogenetic analysis recovered Kurupi itaata gen. et sp. nov. among abelisaurid theropods, but was nested in an unresolved massive polytomy of the entire clade. Taphonomic traits on the studied specimens corroborate previous proposals for the paleoenvironmental context of the Marilia Formation. Kurupi itaata gen. et sp. nov. was about 5 m long, with a rigid tail, and cursorial locomotion as indicated by its a muscles attachment and bones anatomy. This new taxon contributes to the knowledge of the Maastrichtian continental fauna of Brazil and increases the diversity of medium-sized abelisaurids in western Gondwana.

The Cretaceous in the Brazilian Platform records events of magmatism, tectonism and sedimentation coupled to the Gondwana breakup. Some of these events are registered as sedimentary sequences in interior basins, such as in the Cretaceous sequence of the Alto Xingu Sub-basin, Parecis Basin, Central Brazil. This article proposes the faciologic characterization and paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the Cretaceous sequence of the eastern portion of the Parecis Basin and its relation with some reactivated structures as, for instance, the Serra Formosa Arch. Based on both data from outcrops and core drillings a paleoenvironmental and evolutionary reconstruction of the sequence is herein presented. The base of the studied section is characterized by chemical and low energy clastic sedimentation of Lake Bottom and Shoreline, in a context of fast initial subsidence and low sedimentation rate. As the subsidence process decreased, a deltaic progradation became dominant with deposition in a prodelta environment, followed by a deltaic front and deltaic plain interbedded with fluvial plain, and aeolian deposition completing the sequence. The inferred Coniacian–Santonian age is based on vertebrate (fishes and notosuchians) and ostracod fossils with regional chrono-correlates in the Adamantina (Bauru Group), Capacete (Sanfranciscana Basin), and Bajo de la Carpa (Neuquen Group, in Argentina) formations. The formation of a Coniacian depocenter in the Alto Xingu Sub-basin is associated to the Turonian–Coniacian reactivation event in the Peruvian Orogenic Phase of the Andean Orogeny, with the transference of stresses to interplate setting, reactivating Proterozoic structures of the basement.

The kannemeyeriiforms of the latest Ladinian-?early Carnian Chanares Formation (Ischigualasto-Villa Union Basin) exemplify the historical taxonomic controversies of several South American dicynodonts. Three taxa were originally recognized based on skull anatomy: “Chanaria” platyceps and two species of Dinodontosaurus (genus otherwise known in the Pinheiros-Chiniqua Sequence, Brazil), but in a recent taxonomic revision they were all synonymized in a single valid species (i.e., Dinodontosaurus brevirostris). The only postcranial record includes some undescribed specimens referred to D. brevirostris, an indeterminate shoulder girdle (MCZ 3459), and an ulna recently referred to Stahleckeria sp. Here we describe a new, large dicynodont specimen (CRILAR-Pv 82) from the Tarjadia Assemblage Zone (AZ) of the lowermost levels of the Chanares Formation, consisting of a right scapula, left ilium, sternum, and a few indeterminate fragments. The tall, dorsally expanded scapular blade with anteroventrally inclined dorsal margin and the anterolaterally directed acromion process broadly match the stahleckeriid morphotype. CRILAR-Pv 82 shares with Stahleckeria potens a sharp, vertical scapular spine on the anteroventral margin of the scapular blade, markedly convex in anterior view. The “hook-shaped” curvature of the preacetabular iliac process also resembles Stahleckeria potens and Eubrachiosaurus browni. These features differ at least with the Brazilian specimens of Dinodontosaurus (D. tener). The available data shows that MCZ 3459 also fits the stahleckeriid morphology, becoming the first historical record of the clade for the unit. A rigorous comparison with D. brevirostris will await the examination of more complete specimens. The dicynodont postcrania described so far from the Chanares Formation represent the oldest record of Stahleckeriinae in the Ischigualasto-Villa Union Basin, expanding back its Argentinian record very likely beyond the Ladinian-Carnian boundary.

The Sanga do Cabral Supersequence (SCS), comprises the Brazilian Sanga do Cabral Formation (SCF) and the Uruguayan Buena Vista Formation (BVF). So far, the SCS has yielded temnospondyls, parareptiles, archosauromorphs, putative synapsids, and a number of indeterminate specimens. In the absence of absolute dates for these rocks, a biostratigraphic approach is necessary to establish the ages of the SCF and the BVF. It is well established that the SCF is Early Triassic mainly due to the presence of the widespread Gondwanan reptile Procolophon trigoniceps. Conversely, the age of the BVF is subject of great controversy, being regarded alternatively as Permian, Permo-Triassic, and Early Triassic. The BVF has yielded the definite procolophonid Pintosaurus magnidentis . Procolophonoidea is one of the most diverse and conspicuous terrestrial tetrapod groups of the Lower Triassic Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone in the Karoo Basin of South Africa, which preserves tetrapods from the aftermath of the end-Permian extinction event. Based on a previous interpretation that the fauna of the BVF is Permian, and in the reinterpretation of disarticulated vertebrae from SCF with ‘swollen’ neural arches as belonging to either seymouriamorphs or diadectomorphs, it was recently suggested that at least part of the SCF is Permian in age, which prompted this comprehensive reevaluation of both SCS's faunal content and geology. Moreoever, new, strikingly large procolophonid specimens (skull, vertebra, and a mandibular fragment) from the SCF are described and referred to the genus Procolophon . The large procolophonid vertebra described here contradicts the recent hypothesis that similar specimens from the SCF belong to seymouriamorphs or diadectomorphs, because its morphology is consistent with that found in Procolophon . There is not a single diagnostic specimen that supports the inference of Permian levels in the SCS. Accordingly, because all diagnostic and biostratigraphically informative fossils from the SCF and the BVF are either Early Triassic or restricted to the Triassic, we conclude that the available biostratigraphic data reinforce an Early Triassic age assignment to the SCS.

Amiid remains from the Upper Cretaceous (Turonian-Santonian) Adamantina Formation, Bauru Basin, Southeastern Brazil are described. The material is known only from fragmented isolated jaw bones (maxilla and dentary), a vertebral centrum, and isolated teeth and represents the first halecomorph described from this stratigraphical unit. Characters of the maxilla and the shape of the teeth, permit referral to the subfamily Vidalaminae. The Adamantina material differs from material described from the slightly younger Marilia Formation (Maastrichthian) of the same Bauru Basin, by the presence of longitudinal ridges on the surface of the maxilla as well as by tooth sockets of equal size. These two records are the unique indisputable occurrences of freshwater vidalamins and confirm the presence of this clade within the incipient Neotropical ichthyofauna.

We describe a juvenile specimen of a titanosaurian sauropod dinosaur consisting of two dorsal and three caudal vertebral centra, an ilium fragment, and an ischium unearthed in 1991 from Site Km 153.5 at BR-050 highway in the Serra da Galga region, municipality of Uberaba, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The outcrop at the site is assigned to the Serra da Galga Member of the Marilia Formation (Bauru Basin: Bauru Group; Upper Cretaceous: Maastrichtian). Although the material is very incomplete, features such as strongly procoelous caudal centra suggest an affinity with the titanosaurian clade Lithostrotia. The extensive vertebral pneumaticity with deep pleurocoels and well-developed camerae supports the hypothesis that, in titanosaurs, the air sac system was already present and fully developed even at early ontogenetic stages.

The tetrapod faunas from the terrestrial Middle–Late Triassic basins of Africa and South America are among the richest in the world, especially in non-mammalian cynodonts. Despite the great abundance of cynodont specimens found in these basins, there are few known taxa that exhibit interbasinal distributions. Here we describe a new species of traversodontid cynodont of the genus Scalenodon from the Triassic Dinodontosaurus Assemblage Zone of the Santa Maria Supersequence, from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Scalenodon ribeiroae sp. nov. is based on a partial skull that possesses a combination of features not observed in any other South American traversodontid: ellipsoid upper postcanines with the transverse crest formed by three cusps, lacking a mesiobuccal accessory cusp, and with lingual cusp projected lingually creating a concave lingual surface on the upper postcanines; the paracanine fossa is positioned medially to the upper canine, and jugal lacks a suborbital process. A phylogenetic analysis places the new taxon in a basal position within the Family Traversodontidae, with the African Scalenodon angustifrons as sister-taxon. The new specimen of Scalenodon represents the first record of this genus outside of the Manda Beds of Tanzania, and reinforces the biostratigraphical and biogeographical connection between Gondwanan Middle–Late Triassic tetrapod faunas. Although recent advances have been made, our current knowledge of these faunas is limited by the lack of absolute dates for most units and by uncertainties in the taxonomy and stratigraphical provenance of key fossils.

Mato Grosso State is the main area of paleontological investigations in central Brazil, especially regarding Upper Cretaceous beds. Fossil collection in the surroundings of the Morro do Cambambe started as early as late nineteenth century, but prospections and studies are still ongoing. This contribution presents new dinosaur specimens recovered from Upper Cretaceous outcrops of the southeastern portion of Mato Grosso State. These remains enabled the first report of a megaraptoran theropod based on a vertebral centrum and the description of abelisaurid (a fragmentary tooth) and titanosaur remains (a tooth and a fragment of a dorsal vertebra). Based on the amount of compiled reports of tetrapod remains from Mato Grosso, mainly from meeting abstracts and technical reports, the evidence at hand indicates a diverse Upper Cretaceous tetrapod assemblage still poorly explored in comparison to other Upper Cretaceous units of Brazil and Gondwana, in general. We present a novel strategy to renormalize lattice operators in QCD+QED, including first order QED corrections to the non-perturbative evaluation of QCD renormalization constants. Our procedure takes systematically into account the mixed non-factorizable QCD+QED effects which were neglected in previous calculations, thus significantly reducing the systematic uncertainty on renormalization corrections. The procedure is presented here in the RI'-MOM scheme, but it can be applied to other schemes (e.g. RI-SMOM) with appropriate changes. We discuss the application of this strategy to the calculation of the leading isospin breaking corrections to the leptonic decay rates $\Gamma(\pi_{\mu 2})$ and $\Gamma(K_{\mu 2})$, evaluated for the first time on the lattice. The precision in the matching to the $W$-regularization scheme is improved to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_{em}\alpha_s(M_W))$ with respect to previous calculations. We study the production of vector bosons in hadron-hadron collisions via the Drell-Yan mechanism in QCD. Our treatment of the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of the produced bosons takes all available theoretical principles and results into account in a systematic way. The resulting qT distribution reduces to the perturbative limit for large qT, includes the summation of soft gluons and reproduces the known results for the total cross section. A full numerical analysis of W and Z cross sections at collider and tevatron energies is made.

The early evolution of lepidosaurs is marked by an extremely scarce fossil record during the Triassic. Importantly, most Triassic lepidosaur specimens are represented by disarticulated individuals from high energy accretion deposits in Laurasia, thus greatly hampering our understanding of the initial stages of lepidosaur evolution. Here, we describe the fragmentary remains of an associated skull and mandible of Clevosaurus hadroprodon sp. nov., a new taxon of sphenodontian lepidosaur from the Late Triassic (Carnian; 237–228 Mya) of Brazil. Referral to Sphenodontia is supported by the combined presence of a marginal dentition ankylosed to the apex of the dentary, maxilla, and premaxilla; the presence of ‘secondary bone’ at the bases of the marginal dentition; and a ventrally directed mental process at the symphysis of the dentary. Our phylogenetic analyses recover Clevosaurus hadroprodon as a clevosaurid, either in a polytomy with the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic Clevosaurus and Brachyrhinodon (under Bayesian inference), or nested among different species of Clevosaurus (under maximum parsimony). Clevosaurus hadroprodon represents the oldest known sphenodontian from Gondwana, and its clevosaurid relationships indicates that these sphenodontians achieved a widespread biogeographic distribution much earlier than previously thought. Brasilodon quadrangularis (Cynodontia, Probainognathia) is an iconic non-mammaliaform cynodont from the Late Triassic of Brazil (Riograndia Assemblage Zone, Candelária Sequence), being considered as the sister taxon of Mammaliaformes. Although its phylogenetic position is very important, several aspects of its postcranial anatomy remain unclear or unstudied. Here, we present a detailed description of the postcranial elements referred to Brasilodon, including previously mentioned specimens and new ones, which add relevant information about its postcranial morphology and provide a new insight into the anatomical transition between advanced non-mammaliaform cynodonts and early mammaliaforms. Functional and ecological implications are also investigated, based on the postcranial morphology and muscular reconstructions. The postcranium of Brasilodon differs from most non-mammaliaform cynodonts and presents similarities with tritylodontids, early mammaliaforms and extant therians, such as a ventrally oriented scapular glenoid facet, a distinct and ossified greater humeral tubercle, lack of ectepicondylar foramen, olecranon process, hemispherical humeral and femoral heads and a prominent intertrochanteric crest. The humeral torsion, the length of the deltopectoral crest, the large bicipital groove and the well-developed lesser tubercle, indicate that the forelimb of Brasilodon was hold in a semi-sprawling position, with well-developed adductor muscles to maintain the body off the ground. The short femoral neck and the strong medial projection of the femoral head indicate the femur was held in a more erect posture than in basal non-mammaliaform cynodonts. The anterodorsally projected iliac blade with reduced postacetabular process, reduction of the anterior part of the pubis, medially located lesser trochanter indicate a basically mammalian pattern of pelvic musculature, able to swing the femur in a nearly parasagittal plane. Uberabatitan ribeiroi is a Late Cretaceous titanosaur (Dinosauria, Sauropoda) from southeastern Brazil. Here we provide a detailed revision of all its available specimens, including new elements from the type-locality. One new autopomorphy is added to diagnosis of the taxon: astragalus with a well-developed anteroposterior crest that mediodistally delimits the tibial articulation. Linear regressions were conducted in an attempt to circumscribe specimens within the type-series, revealing that it is composed of several individuals, with inferred total body lengths varying from 7 to 26 meters. Phylogenetic analyses including U. ribeiroi show that the Brazilian taxon corresponds to a non-saltasaurid lithostrotian titanosaur.

A digital cranial endocast of the specimen UFRGS-PV-596-T of Riograndia guaibensis was obtained from μCT scan images. This is a small cynodont, closely related to mammaliaforms, from the Late Triassic of Brazil. Riograndia has large olfactory bulb casts and the cerebral hemispheres region is relatively wider than in other non-mammaliaform cynodonts. Impressions of vessels were observed and a conspicuous mark on the dorsal surface was interpreted as the transverse sinus. The calculated encephalization quotient is greater than the range seen in most other non-mammaliaform cynodonts. The ratios between linear and area measurements of the dorsal surface suggest four evolutionary changes from a basal eucynodont morphology to mammaliaforms, involving an evolutionary increase of the relative size of the olfactory bulbs and the width of the cerebral hemispheres and cerebellum. The data supports the hypothesis of the neurological evolution of the mammalian lineage starting with a trend for an increase of the olfactory bulbs, which is associated with adaptations in the nasal cavity. Purpose: To investigate age-related differences in outcomes of critically ill patients with sepsis around the world. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of data from the prospective ICON audit, in which all adult ( >16 years ) patients admitted to participating ICUs between May 8 and 18, 2012, were included, except admissions for routine postoperative observation. For this sub-analysis, the 10,012 patients with completed age data were included. They were divided into five age groups - 80 years. Sepsis was defined as infection plus at least one organ failure. Results: A total of 2963 patients had sepsis, with similar proportions across the age groups (80 = 30.9%). Hospital mortality increased with age and in patients >80 years was almost twice that of patients 70 years was independently associated with increased risk of dying. Conclusions: The odds for death in ICU patients with sepsis increased with age with the maximal rate of increase occurring between the ages of 71 and 77 years. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. The stratigraphic record of distributive fluvial systems is commonly characterised by frequent and complex interstratification of palaeosols among channel and overbank deposits. However, current models focus primarily on sedimentation and pay only limited attention to palaeopedogenesis, thereby failing to incorporate important palaeoenvironmental and stratigraphic information. This study proposes a pedosedimentary model for distributive fluvial systems that depicts and accounts for two palaeopedogenetic trends: one downdip, in relation to distality from the fan apex, and one along-strike, in relation to distance from active channel belts. Palaeosols are reported in detail from an Upper Cretaceous succession of the Bauru Basin, southeastern Brazil, through the application of macro-, micromorphological and geochemical studies, combined with facies and architectural-element analyses of sediments. In the downdip palaeopedogenetic trend, the proximal zone of the depositional system is characterised by a dominance of well-drained Inceptisols that develop on amalgamated channel fills; in the medial zone, Inceptisols occur interlayered with overbank deposits containing Entisols and poorly drained Vertisols. The distal zone preserves more mature and poorly drained Inceptisols developed on deposits of overbank and sporadic distal channel fills. These pedotypes show an increase in maturity and hydromorphism, moving away from the apex to the fan toe. This is likely linked to (i) the progressive approach of the topographic surface to the water table, and (ii) the average increase in distance to an active channel belt in distal locations. The along-strike palaeopedogenetic trend culminates in poorly developed palaeosols in floodplain regions that correspond to topographic depressions located between channel belts and which were subject to recurrent floods. Because palaeopedogenesis in the floodplain region is penecontemporaneous to sedimentation, pedotypes show an increase in maturity, bioinduced calcification and hydromorphism with distance from the active channels; they pass laterally from Entisols and Inceptisols near active channels, to Vertisols away from active channels. Conversely, following avulsion, abandoned channel belts remain as topographically elevated alluvial ridges located at some distance from the newly active channels and positioned above the water table and this leads to the development of better drained and better developed Inceptisols relative to pedotypes of the floodplain region. Overall, both palaeopedogenetic trends demonstrate the overriding controls of topography, sedimentation rate and parent material on pedogenesis, with only minor climatic influence. This work offers a novel pedosedimentary model for distributive fluvial systems and highlights the palaeoenvironmental significance of palaeosol trends, providing new constraints for the recognition of distributive fluvial systems in the rock record.

The Parana Basin was filled by a sedimentary package deposited in successive sedimentation episodes related to the tectonic events that hit the SW portion of the Gondwana. The Triassic portion of this package, known worldwide for its continental tetrapod fauna, occurs only in the southern portion of the basin and is represented by 2 s-order sequences: the Sanga do Cabral Supersequence (SCS - Early Triassic) and the Santa Maria Supersequence (SMS - Middle-Late Triassic). The SCS fauna, including temnospondyls, parareptiles (mainly Procolophon), archosauromorphs, putative synapsids, and a number of indeterminate specimens, is traditionally considered Early Triassic and corresponds to the “Procolophon abundant zone” of the Karoo Basin (the upper levels of the Lystrosaurus AZ), in the upper Katberg Formation, which is Induan to early Olenekian in age. The sedimentary environment of the SCS is thought to be a wide alluvial plain, in which small and shallow channels spread northwards into a vast semiarid environment. By its turn, the Middle-Upper Triassic Santa Maria Supersequence is divided into four third-order sequences, from base to top: Pinheiros-Chiniqua, Santa Cruz, Candelaria and Mata. Each of these sequences begins with fluvial deposition (low sinuosity rivers) that is overlain by transgressive shallow lacustrine deposits. The first three of these sequences present a very rich record of fossil tetrapods, including four successive faunal associations: Dinodontosaurus Assemblage Zone (Ladinian, within the Pinheiros-Chiniqua Sequence), Santacruzodon AZ (Ladinian/Carnian, in the Santa Cruz Sequence), Hyperodapedon AZ (Carnian) and the Riograndia AZ (early Norian), the latter two respectively at the base and top of the Candelaria Sequence. In general, the lower portion of the package (Pinheiros-Chiniqua and Santa Cruz Sequences) was deposited under more basic and dried environmental conditions and are dominated by synapsids, while the top of the section (Candelaria Sequence) is characterized by more acid and humid conditions and by a shift in the faunal content, with diapsids as dominating forms and presenting an increase of diversity compared to the lower biozones.

Background: The chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is characterized by the presence of the Philadelphia chromosome and the BCR-ABL1 fusion gene. The introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) significantly improved the survival, but 15% of patients don’t reach the optimal responses at the defined end-points or develop secondary resistance. The 2013 ELN guidelines identified as fundamental the early molecular response (BCR-ABL1/ABL1 % ≤10% IS), the MR3 (10% to the 0% (MR4, MR4.5, MR5) the two techniques have been compared in the different molecular subgroups. Results: Firstly we compared the number of detected ABL1 copies, that are fundamental for definition of the molecular response categories, especially for defining the degree of deep response (32,000 for MR4.5, 100,000 for MR5). By the “LabNet” method, 51 (81%) samples exceeded the 100,000 copies of ABL1, while by the automated method 81 samples (94.2%) reached >100,000 ABL1 copies. Clevosaurus was a cosmopolitan Rhynchocephalia genus restricted to the Late Triassic and the Early Jurassic. In Brazil, C. brasiliensis is one of the most conspicuous species collected from the Candelaria Sequence (Riograndia Assemblage Zone, Norian age) of the Santa Maria Supersequence. Several jaws of C. brasiliensis are housed in the Laboratorio de Paleontologia de Vertebrados of the Instituto de Geociencias-UFRGS. Some of these jaws bear a relatively small protuberant bony callus on the anterolateral margin of the dentary, evidenced by a different tissue pattern incorporating small pits and discrete grooves. This pattern closely resembles a common bone infection known in the mandible of the extant Sphenodon punctatus.
