Abstract

Background Rapid urbanization, academic pressures, and developmental life transition stressors contribute to mental health stress for postsecondary students in China. Effective prevention, early identification, and timely intervention are challenged by stigma, a lack of mental health literacy, and inadequate mental health resources. Objective Our implementation science (IS) research project is aimed at evaluating the use of an evidence-informed mental health promotion intervention named Acceptance and Commitment to Empowerment – Linking Youth and ‘Xin’ (hearts) (ACE-LYNX) to promote university student mental health in Jinan, China. Methods We will engage and collaborate with Shandong Mental Health Center, the provincial mental health center, and six local universities in different regions of Jinan. The ACE-LYNX intervention aims to reduce social stigma against mental illness, enhance mental health literacy, and improve access to quality mental health care by increasing interdisciplinary collaboration and forming a mental health network. It is based on two evidence-based approaches, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Group Empowerment Psychoeducation (GEP), and it will be delivered through online learning and in-person group training. The project will train 90 interdisciplinary professionals using the model. They will in turn train 15 professionals and 20 students at each university. The project will adopt the Reach, Efficacy, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework, which provides a structure to examine the process and outcomes of implementation using mixed methods comprising quantitative and qualitative approaches along five dimensions: reach, efficacy, adoption, implementation, and maintenance. Results Over the course of the project, 720 champions will be directly trained. They will contribute to developing a formal and informal mental health network, strengthened by student-led mental health initiatives and professional-led initiatives to promote collaborative care and facilitated care pathways. We anticipate that our project will reach out to 11,000 to 18,000 students. Abstract

While formative assessment is recognised as a powerful strategy to improve student learning in mainstream education, less is known about its use in special schools. This study investigates how teachers’ Personal Practice Assessment Theories (PPATs) affect their formative assessment practices within the special school context with the support of e-books. A case study was conducted with three Chinese teachers working with lower primary students who exhibit mild levels of intellectual disability. Data were collected through classroom observations and interviews. The findings reveal that the interaction between teachers’ PPATs and the e-learning environment affect teachers’ assessment goals, and the way they ‘elicit’, ‘interpret’ and ‘respond’ to assessment information. This study contributes to the understanding of how e-learning technology can be used to facilitate meaningful formative assessment in the special education context.

107. (Digital Presentation) Fabrication of Single-Crystal Layered Oxide Cathode through Variation on Heating Process

Abstract

Since the announcement of a million-mile battery by Tesla, single-crystal processing of layered oxide cathode has received great attention recently. From single-crystal process, high Ni layered oxides with grain size in mm range tends to give better cycling performance due to better structural integrity against repeated charge/discharge cycles. However, during heating/calcination process of oxide/carbonates/nitrates powder compacts, it may involve decomposition, chemical reactions, diffusion, oxidation, sintering, grain-growth. For single-crystal process, the powder compacts need to be heated to higher temperatures (~950°C) for certain period of time. On the other hand, enough air/oxygen is need for Ni oxidation and better crystallization in Ni-rich layered structure. Therefore, it is important to investigate the processing of single-crystal Ni-rich layered oxide based on the sintering behavior, thermal gravimetric analysis, and phase transformation. Nevertheless, the lithiation/oxidation of Ni-containing oxides involves charge compensation resulted from defect reactions. As a result, the affected electrical, optical, structural, and electrochemical properties of layered oxides will be discussed based on defect chemistry consideration. The structural, microstructural and electrical properties of decomposed precursors and doped layered oxides will be examined using XRD, SEM and DC/AC impedance measurements. CV and charge/discharge tests from assembled coin cells will be used to evaluate electrochemical properties of single-crystal Ni-rich layered oxides.

Abstract

International audience; We perform unsupervised analysis of image-derived shape and motion features extracted from 3,822 cardiac Magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs) of the UK Biobank. First, with a feature extraction method previously published based on deep learning models, we extract from each case 9 feature values characterizing both the cardiac shape and motion. Second, a feature selection is performed to remove highly correlated feature pairs. Third, clustering is carried out using a Gaussian mixture model on the selected features. After analysis, we identify 2 small clusters that probably correspond to 2 pathological categories. Further confirmation using a trained classification model and dimensionality reduction tools is carried out to support this finding. Moreover, we examine the differences between the other large clusters and compare our measures with the ground truth.

125. Exploring Mechanisms of Mental Illness Stigma Reduction in Asian Canadian Men.

Abstract

Objective: Although there is evidence of effective stigma reduction by various psychological and educational interventions, the mechanisms of change remain unclear. In this article, we examine hypothesized processes that might have mediated reductions in stigma observed among Asian men who had received in mental health promotion interventions in Greater Toronto Area, Canada. Method: Our sample consisted of 495 Asian men, who received either acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT; n = 133), contact-based empowerment education (CEE; n = 149), combination of ACT and CEE (n = 152), or psychoeducation (n = 61). Group differences on intervention outcomes, including stigmatizing attitudes (Community Attitudes toward the Mentally Ill), internalized stigma (Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness), valued living (Valued Living Questionnaire), and attitudes to engage in social change (Social Justice Scale) were hypothesized to be due to the impact of the different interventions and mediated by changes in specific underlying psychological processes. These process-related changes were modelled using measures of mindfulness (Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory), psychological flexibility (Acceptance and Action Questionnaire version II), and empowerment (Empowerment Scale [ES]). Their pre- and post changes were analyzed with repeated measures analysis of variance, and mediational analyses were performed. Results: Findings from mediational analyses suggest that empowerment (ES) mediated a significant portion of the effects observed in reduction in stigmatizing attitudes and internalized stigma across intervention groups (t = 3.67 to 3.78 for CEE groups, and t = 4.32 to 4.56 for ACT groups). For the ACT groups, reduction in internalized stigma might also have been partly mediated by psychological flexibility, an intervention-specific psychological process. Conclusions: Results from the current study suggest that different stigma reduction interventions may be mediated by increased empowerment as a common mechanism of change, while intervention-specific mechanism of change, improved psychological flexibility through ACT, may also contribute to improvement in internalized stigma. Abstract

Background and aims: It has been recognized that Asian immigrants in North America have lower rates of mental health service utilization. From the perspective of cross-cultural psychiatry, one of the most important cultural factors may be differences in the explanatory model of illness. This article examines the relationship of causal beliefs, perceived service accessibility and attitudes towards seeking mental health care. Method: The sample consisted of 1000 immigrant and refugee women from five ethnic minority communities in Toronto, including three Chinese Canadian communities (Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan), Korean Canadians and Vietnamese Canadians. Data were acquired by a self-administered structured questionnaire. Quantitative data were analysed using MANOVA, ANOVA and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The five ethnic minority groups of women differed in their explanatory models about mental illness and distress. In the full model where other variables were controlled for, the most significant factor predicting attitudes towards seeking professional help was perceived access for all groups except the Hong Kong Chinese. In the last group, those subscribing more to a Western stress model of illness had a more positive attitude towards seeking professional help, while those subscribing more to supernatural beliefs had a more negative attitude. Age and education were not significant predictors. Conclusion: Perceived access is one of the main factors that influence attitudes toward seeking professional help. Explanatory models may predict help-seeking behaviours if perceived access to such services is available.

Abstract

We report a case of pulmonary embolism in a patient who presented with repeated anxiety attacks and psychotic symptoms and was misdiagnosed as having withdrawal seizure or anxiety disorder not otherwise specified. This case highlighted the nonspecific clinical features of pulmonary embolism and the principles in making psychiatric diagnosis. Careful history taking, thorough physical examination, appropriate investigation, and a high index of suspicion led to the correct diagnosis. The principle of hierarchy of psychiatric diagnosis (ie, organic over non-organic) and the possibility of comorbidities should always apply.

Abstract

Stigma of mental illness contributes to silence, denial and delayed help seeking. Existing stigma reduction strategies seldom consider gender and cultural contexts. The Strengths in Unity study was a multi-site Canadian study that engaged Asian men in three stigma reduction interventions (ACT, CEE, psychoeducation) and mobilized them as Community Mental Health Ambassadors. Our participants included both men living with or affected by mental illness (LWA) as well as community leaders (CL). This paper will: (1) describe the baseline characteristics of the Toronto participants including their sociodemographic information, mental illness stigma (CAMI and ISMI), attitudes towards social change (SJS), and intervention-related process variables (AAQ-II, VLQ, FMI, Empowerment); (2) compare the differences among these variables between LWA and CL; and (3) explore factors that may correlate with socio-economic status and mental health stigma. A total of 609 Asian men were recruited in Toronto, Canada. Both CL and LWA had similar scores on measures of external and internalized stigma and social change attitudes, except that LWA had more positive views about the acceptance and integration of those with mental illness into the community on the CAMI, while CL had a higher level of perceived behavioral control on the SJS. Group differences were also observed between LWA and CL in some process-related variables. Exploratory analysis suggests that younger and more educated participants had lower stigma. Our findings underscore the importance of engaging both community leaders and people with lived experience as mental health advocates to address stigma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Evoked potentials (EPs) are time-varying signals typically buried in relatively large background noise. To extract the EP more effectively from noise, we had previously developed an approach using an adaptive signal enhancer (ASE) (Chen et al, 1995). ASE requires a proper reference input signal for its optimal performance. Ensemble- and moving window-averages were formerly used with good results. In this paper, we present a new method to provide even more effective reference inputs for the ASE. Specifically, a Gaussian radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) was used to preprocess raw EP signals before serving as the reference input. Since the RBFNN has built-in nonlinear activation functions that enable it to closely fit any function mapping, the output of RBFNN can effectively track the signal variations of EP. Results confirmed the superior performance of ASE with RBFNN over the previous method.
