102. Neural Network Forecast of the Sunspot Butterfly Diagram

Abstract

Using neural networks as a prediction method, we attempt to demonstrate that forecasting of the Sun's sunspot time series can be extended to the spatial-temporal case. We employ this machine learning methodology to forecast not only in time but also in space (in this case the latitude) on a spatial-temporal dataset representing the solar sunspot diagram extending to a total of 142 years. The analysis shows that this approach seems to be able to reconstruct the overall qualitative aspects of the spatial-temporal series, namely the overall shape and amplitude of the latitude and time pattern of sunspots. This is, as far as we are aware, the first time neural networks have been used to forecast the Sun's sunspot butterfly diagram, and although the results are limited in the quantitative prediction aspects, it points the way to use the full spatial-temporal series as opposed to just the time series for machine learning approaches to forecasting. Further to that, we use the method to predict that the upcoming Cycle 25 maximum sunspot number will be around $R_{25}=57 \pm 17$. This implies a very weak cycle and that it will be the weakest cycle on record.

Abstract

Successful product development is mostly dependent on how well contributions from stakeholders are taken into account. There are signs that the way stakeholders are involved in a project is directly linked to how well software products are delivered. Engagement of stakeholders enables organisations to proactively consider the requirements and expectations of anyone with a stake in the product under development. For a given stakeholder management process (SMP) to work well, it is recommended that all stakeholders be listed in a reference document, and their involvement in the process to be kept up-to-date. For this purpose, this study presents a solution to this problem by coming up with a feature-modelling-based stakeholder management process (FM-SMP) for capturing and documenting the right stakeholders during the SMP. The FM-SMP supports ongoing monitoring of the status and attributes of stakeholders during this process. This manuscript includes the description of a case study on smart homes, where the proposed FM-SMP was adopted and evaluated successfully. The result of the case study reveals that the use of FM-SMP improves the ability of software engineers to effectively and precisely identify the appropriate stakeholders, thereby enhancing end-user satisfaction in software product development. Abstract

This study examines the chemical and mineralogical composition of waste materials from abandoned copper and manganese mines in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, Portugal, as a first step toward their potential recycling for critical and strategic raw materials (CRM and SRM). Using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) and other analytical techniques, this research highlights the presence of valuable elements, including copper, manganese, and rare earth elements, in concentrations significantly above their crustal abundance. The findings underscore the dual potential of these wastes: as sources of secondary raw materials and for mitigating environmental hazards such as acid mine drainage (AMD). Recovered materials include chalcopyrite, pyrolusite, and rhodochrosite, with critical elements like cobalt, lithium, and tungsten identified. pXRF proved to be a reliable, cost-effective tool for rapid field and laboratory analyses, demonstrating high precision and good correlation with standard laboratory methods. The study emphasizes the importance of characterizing historical mining waste to support a circular economy, reduce reliance on foreign material imports, and address environmental challenges. This approach aligns with the European Union's Critical Raw Materials Act, promoting sustainable resource use and the recovery of strategic resources from historical mining sites. Abstract

This study addresses the challenge of optimizing energy management in the electric vehicle industry, specifically focusing on motorsport. It particularly targets optimizing energy management during an endurance event at the Formula Student competition. The research involves detailed simulation of a complete endurance event, including developing precise track and vehicle models and their application in real-time energy management of our motorsport vehicle. The primary objective is to develop an energy reference profile that optimizes point scoring following the event's specific rules. The energy reference profile serves as a strategic guideline for energy consumption and its regeneration throughout the endurance event. What sets this study apart is its emphasis on the real-time feedback controller's implementation in the Formula Student prototype, FST12, specifically during the endurance event. This controller dynamically regulates the inverter's power output, ensuring the vehicle closely follows the pre-established energy reference profile. This real-time energy management approach enhances overall performance by optimizing energy utilization for maximum scoring potential. The developed distance estimation method presented an error of less than 0.7% compared to experimental measurements. The Formula Student prototype, FST12, underwent experimental validation on a real 20 km closed-loop track. Results showed that the optimized strategy can be implemented with less than 0.5% of error in energy consumption and 6.8% of error in the obtained competing points. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objectiveto describe and evaluate the dermoglandular advancement-rotation flap with no contralateral surgery as a technique for the conservative treatment of breast cancer when skin or a large proportion of gland requires resection.Patients/Methods14 patients with breast tumors with a mean size of 4.2 cm and need for skin resection. The resection area is included within an isosceles triangle, with its apex located on the areola, which is the pivot for rotation of a dermoglandular flap released through a lateral extension along that triangle base. Symmetry before and after radiotherapy was objectively assessed by authors using the BCCT.core software, as well as subjectively by three experts and patients themselves using the Harvard scale.ResultsExperts considered the breast symmetry results to be excellent/good for 85.7% of patients in the early post-operative period and 78.6% in the late post-operative period. Excellent/good ratings provided by BCCT.core software amounted to 78.6% of cases in the early post-operative period and 92.9% in the late post-operative period. Symmetry was rated as excellent/good by 100% of patients.ConclusionDermoglandular advancement-rotation flap technique with no contralateral surgery provides good symmetry when a large proportion of skin or gland requires resection on breast conservative cancer treatment.

Abstract

IntroductionThe breasts are a female symbol, impacts self-image and self-esteem. Breast reconstructive and oncoplastic surgeries have an important role in minimizing injuries. In Brazil less than a third of public health system (SUS) users have access to immediate reconstructive surgery. The low rate of breast reconstructions has multiple causes and the deficiency in availability and surgeons’ technical qualification play a role. In 2010, the Breast Reconstruction and Oncoplastic Surgery Improvement Course was created by professors of the Mastology Department of Santa Casa de São Paulo and State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of the techniques learned on patients’ management by the surgeons enrolled in the Course, as well as to characterize their profile.MethodsAll students enrolled in the Improvement Course between 2010 and 2018 were invited to answer an online questionnaire. Students who did not agree to answer the questionnaire or answered them incompletely were excluded.ResultsTotal students included: 59. The mean age: 48.9 years, male (72%) with more than 5 years of Mastology practice (82.2%), from all regions of Brazil, 1.7% from the North, 33.9% from the Northeast, 44.1% from the Southeast, and 12% from the South. Most of the students considered they had little or no knowledge of breast reconstruction (74.6%) and 91,5% did not consider they had enough aptitude to perform breast reconstructions after finishing residency. After the Course, 96.6% considered themselves apt to perform such surgeries. Over 90% of the students considered the Course had impacted their practice and changed their surgical strategy view. Before the Course, 84.8% of the students stated that less than half of their patients who were operated on for breast cancer had breast reconstruction, compared to 30.5% after the Course.ConclusionThe Breast Reconstruction and Oncoplastic Surgery Improvement Course studied here positively impacted the mastologists’ management of patients. New training centers worldwide can help a lot of women with breast cancer.

145. The Influence of the Java Collection Framework on Overall Energy Consumption

Abstract

This paper presents a detailed study of the energy consumption of the different Java Collection Framework (JFC) implementations. For each method of an implementation in this framework, we present its energy consumption when handling different amounts of data. Knowing the greenest methods for each implementation, we present an energy optimization approach for Java programs: based on calls to JFC methods in the source code of a program, we select the greenest implementation. Finally, we present preliminary results of optimizing a set of Java programs where we obtained 6.2% energy savings.
