Search

Recent observations indicate that the mass of Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) correlate differently with different galaxy stellar components. Comparing such observations with the results of "ab initio" galaxy formation models can provide insight on the mechanisms leading to the growth of SMBHs. Here we use a state-of-the-art semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to investigate the correlation of the different galaxy stellar components with the mass of the central SMBH. The stellar mass in the disc, in the bulge, and in the pseudo-bulge of galaxies is related to quiescent star formation, to galaxy interactions, and to the loss of angular momentum following disc instabilities, respectively. Consistently with recent findings, we find that while the predicted bulge masses are tightly correlated with the SMBH masses, the correlation between the latter and the galactic discs shows a much larger scatter, in particular when bulgeless galaxies are considered. In addition, we obtain that the predicted masses of pseudo-bulges shows little or no-correlation with the masses of SMBHs. We track the histories of merging, star formation, and SMBH accretion to investigate the physical processes at the origin of such findings within the context of cosmological models of galaxy formation. The triggering mechanisms for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are still debated. Some of the most popular ones include galaxy interactions (IT) and disk instabilities (DI). Using an advanced semi analytic model (SAM) of galaxy formation, coupled to accurate halo occupation distribution modeling, we investigate the imprint left by each separate triggering process on the clustering strength of AGN at small and large scales. Our main results are as follows: i) DIs, irrespective of their exact implementation in the SAM, tend to fall short in triggering AGN activity in galaxies at the center of halos with $M_h>10^{13.5} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$. On the contrary, the IT scenario predicts abundance of active, central galaxies that generally agrees well with observations at every halo mass. ii) The relative number of satellite AGN in DIs at intermediate-to-low luminosities is always significantly higher than in IT models, especially in groups and clusters. The low AGN satellite fraction predicted for the IT scenario might suggest that different feeding modes could simultaneously contribute to the triggering of satellite AGN. iii) Both scenarios are quite degenerate in matching large-scale clustering measurements, suggesting that the sole average bias might not be an effective observational constraint. iv) Our analysis suggests the presence of both a mild luminosity and a more consistent redshift dependence in the AGN clustering, with AGN inhabiting progressively less massive dark matter halos as the redshift increases. Outflows are invoked in co-evolutionary models to link the growth of SMBH and galaxies through feedback phenomena, and from the analysis of both galaxies and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) samples at z$\sim1-3$, it is becoming clear that powerful winds are quite common in AGN hosts. High-resolution and high S/N observations are needed in order to uncover the physical properties of the wind through kinematics analysis. We exploited VIMOS, SINFONI and Subaru/IRCS Adaptive Optics data to study the kinematics properties on the scale the host galaxy of XID5395, a luminous, X-ray obscured Starburst/Quasar merging system at z$\sim1.5$ detected in the XMM-COSMOS field, and associated with an extreme [O II] emitter (EW$\sim200$ \AA). We mapped, for the first time, at high resolution the kinematics of the [O III] and H$\alpha$ line complexes and linked them with the [O II] emission. The high spatial resolution achieved allowed us to resolve all the components of the SB-QSO system. Our analysis with a resolution of few kpc reveals complexities and asymmetries in and around the nucleus of XID5395. The velocity field measured via non parametric analysis reveals different kinematic components, with maximum blueshifted and redshifted velocities up to $\simeq1300$ km s$^{-1}$, not spatially coincident with the nuclear core. These extreme values of the observed velocities and the spatial location can be explained by the presence of fast moving material. We also spectroscopically confirm the presence of a merging system at the same redshift of the AGN host. We propose that EW as large as $>150$ \AA\ in X-ray selected AGN may be an efficient criterion to isolate objects associated to the short, transition phase of "feedback" in the AGN-galaxy co-evolutionary path, which will subsequently evolve in an unobscured QSO, as suggested from the different observational evidences we accumulated for XID5395., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, A&A in press (version to match language editing)

Negative feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is considered a key mechanism in shaping galaxy evolution. Fast, extended outflows are frequently detected in the AGN host galaxies at all redshifts and luminosities, both in ionised and molecular gas. However, these outflows are only "potentially" able to quench star formation and we are still missing a decisive evidence of negative feedback in action. Here we present Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observations in the Near Infrared (SINFONI) H- and K-band integral-field spectroscopic observations of two quasars at $z\sim$2.4 characterised by fast, extended outflows detected through the [OIII]$\lambda$5007 line (Carniani et al. 2015). The high signal-to-noise ratio of our observations allows us to identify faint narrow (FWHM $< 500$ km/s), and spatially extended components in [OIII]$\lambda$5007 and H$\alpha$ emission associated with star formation in the host galaxy. Such star-formation powered emission is spatially anti-correlated with the fast outflows. The ionised outflows therefore appear to be able to suppress star formation in the region where the outflow is expanding. However the detection of narrow, spatially-extended H$\alpha$ emission indicates star formation rates of at least $\sim 50-90$ M$_{\odot}$/yr, suggesting either that AGN feedback does not affect the whole galaxy or that many feedback episodes are required before star formation is completely quenched. On the other hand, the narrow H$\alpha$ emission extending along the edges of the outflow cone may lead also to a positive feedback interpretation. We investigate the role of supermassive black holes in the global context of galaxy evolution by measuring the host galaxy stellar mass function (HGMF) and the specific accretion rate i.e., lambda_SAR, distribution function (SARDF) up to z~2.5 with ~1000 X-ray selected AGN from XMM-COSMOS. Using a maximum likelihood approach, we jointly fit the stellar mass function and specific accretion rate distribution function, with the X-ray luminosity function as an additional constraint. Our best fit model characterizes the SARDF as a double power-law with mass dependent but redshift independent break whose low lambda_SAR slope flattens with increasing redshift while the normalization increases. This implies that, for a given stellar mass, higher lambda_SAR objects have a peak in their space density at earlier epoch compared to the lower lambda_SAR ones, following and mimicking the well known AGN cosmic downsizing as observed in the AGN luminosity function. The mass function of active galaxies is described by a Schechter function with a almost constant Mstar* and a low mass slope alpha that flattens with redshift. Compared to the stellar mass function, we find that the HGMF has a similar shape and that, up to log((Mstar/Msun)~11.5 the ratio of AGN host galaxies to star forming galaxies is basically constant (~10%). Finally, the comparison of the AGN HGMF for different luminosity and specific accretion rate sub-classes with the phenomenological model prediction by Peng et al. (2010) for the "transient" population, i.e. galaxies in the process of being mass-quenched, reveals that low-luminosity AGN do not appear to be able to contribute significantly to the quenching and that at least at high masses, i.e. Mstar>10^(10.7) Msun , feedback from luminous AGN (log(Lbol)>~46 [erg/s]) may be responsible for the quenching of star formation in the host galaxy., 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The first black hole seeds, formed when the Universe was younger than 500 Myr, are recognized to play an important role for the growth of early (z ~ 7) super-massive black holes. While progresses have been made in understanding their formation and growth, their observational signatures remain largely unexplored. As a result, no detection of such sources has been confirmed so far. Supported by numerical simulations, we present a novel photometric method to identify black hole seed candidates in deep multi-wavelength surveys. We predict that these highly-obscured sources are characterized by a steep spectrum in the infrared (1.6-4.5 micron), i.e. by very red colors. The method selects the only 2 objects with a robust X-ray detection found in the CANDELS/GOODS-S survey with a photometric redshift z > 6. Fitting their infrared spectra only with a stellar component would require unrealistic star formation rates (>2000 solar masses per year). To date, the selected objects represent the most promising black hole seed candidates, possibly formed via the direct collapse black hole scenario, with predicted mass >10^5 solar masses. While this result is based on the best photometric observations of high-z sources available to date, additional progress is expected from spectroscopic and deeper X-ray data. The Lyman continuum (LyC) flux escaping from high-z galaxies into the IGM is a fundamental quantity to understand the physical processes involved in the reionization epoch. We have investigated a sample of star-forming galaxies at z~3.3 in order to search for possible detections of LyC photons escaping from galaxy halos. UV deep imaging in the COSMOS field obtained with the prime focus camera LBC at the LBT telescope was used together with a catalog of spectroscopic redshifts obtained by the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS) to build a sample of 45 galaxies at z~3.3 with L>0.5L*. We obtained deep LBC images of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the interval 3.2728% but a detailed analysis of their properties reveals that, with the exception of two marginal detections (S/N~2) in the U band, all the other 8 galaxies are most likely contaminated by the UV flux of low-z interlopers located close to the high-z targets. The average escape fraction derived from the stacking of the cleaned sample was constrained to fesc_rel0.5L*) star-forming galaxies alone are unable to sustain the level of ionization observed in the cosmic IGM at z~3. We compute the non-thermal emissions produced by relativistic particles accelerated by the AGN-driven shocks in NGC 1068, and we compare the model predictions with the observed gamma-ray and radio spectra . The former is contributed by pion decay, inverse Compton scattering, and bremsstrahlung, while the latter is produced by synchrotron radiation. We derive the gamma-ray and radio emissions by assuming the standard acceleration theory, and we discuss how our results compare with those corresponding to other commonly assumed sources of gamma-ray and radio emissions, like Supernova remnants (SNR) or AGN jets. We find that the AGN-driven shocks observed in the circumnuclear molecular disk of such a galaxy provide a contribution to the gamma-ray emission comparable to that provided by the starburst activity when standard particle acceleration efficiencies are assumed, while they can yield the whole gamma-ray emission only when the parameters describing the acceleration efficiency and the proton coupling with the molecular gas are tuned to values larger than those assumed in standard, SNR-driven shocks. We discuss the range of acceleration efficiencies (for protons and electrons) and of proton calorimetric fractions required to account for the observed gamma-ray emission in the AGN outflow model. We further compare the neutrino flux expected in our model with constraints from current experiments, and we provide predictions for the detections by the upcoming KM3NeT neutrino telescope. Most theoretical models invoke quasar driven outflows to quench star formation in massive galaxies, this feedback mechanism is required to account for the population of old and passive galaxies observed in the local universe. The discovery of massive, old and passive galaxies at z=2, implies that such quasar feedback onto the host galaxy must have been at work very early on, close to the reionization epoch. We have observed the [CII]158um transition in SDSSJ114816.64+525150.3 that, at z=6.4189, is one of the most distant quasars known. We detect broad wings of the line tracing a quasar-driven massive outflow. This is the most distant massive outflow ever detected and is likely tracing the long sought quasar feedback, already at work in the early Universe. The outflow is marginally resolved on scales of about 16 kpc, implying that the outflow can really affect the whole galaxy, as required by quasar feedback models. The inferred outflow rate, dM/dt > 3500 Msun/yr, is the highest ever found. At this rate the outflow can clean the gas in the host galaxy, and therefore quench star formation, in a few million years.

We investigate for the first time the effects of a Warm Dark Matter (WDM) power spectrum on the statistical properties of galaxies using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. The WDM spectrum we adopt as a reference case is suppressed - compared to the standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) case - below a cut-off scale ~ 1 Mpc corresponding (for thermal relic WDM particles) to a mass m_X=0.75 keV. This ensures consistency with present bounds provided by the microwave background WMAP data and by the comparison of hydrodynamical N-body simulations with observed Lyman-{\alpha} forest. We run our fiducial semi-analytic model with such a WDM spectrum to derive galaxy luminosity functions (in B, UV, and K bands) and the stellar mass distributions over a wide range of cosmic epochs, to compare with recent observations and with the results in the CDM case. The predicted color distribution of galaxies in the WDM model is also checked against the data. When compared with the standard CDM case, the luminosity and stellar mass distributions we obtain assuming a WDM spectrum are characterized by: i) a flattening of the faint end slope and ii) a sharpening of the cutoff at the bright end for z \lesssim 0.8. We discuss how the former result is directly related to the smaller number of low-mass haloes collapsing in the WDM scenario, while the latter is related to the smaller number of satellite galaxies accumulating in massive haloes at low redshift, thus suppressing the accretion of small lumps on the central, massive galaxies. These results shows how a adopting a WDM power spectrum may contribute to solve two major problems of CDM galaxy formation scenarios, namely, the excess of predicted faint (low mass) galaxies at low and - most of all - high redshifts, and the excess of bright (massive) galaxies at low redshifts.

We compute the number density of massive Black Holes (BHs) at the centre of galaxies at z=6 in different Dynamical Dark Energy (DDE) cosmologies, and compare it with existing observational lower limits, to derive constraints on the evolution of the Dark Energy equation of state parameter w. Our approach only assumes the canonical scenario for structure formation from the collapse of overdense regions of the Dark Matter dominated primordial density field on progressively larger scales; the Black Hole accretion and merging rate have been maximized in the computation so as to obtain robust constraints on w and on its look-back time derivative w_a. Our results provide independent constraints complementary to those obtained by combining Supernovae, Cosmic Microwave Background and Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations; while the latter concern combinations of w_0 and w_a leaving the time evolution of the state parameter w_a highly unconstrained, the BH abundance mainly provide upper limits on w_a, only weakly depending on w_0. Combined with the existing constraints, our results significantly restrict the allowed region in DDE parameter space, ruling out DDE models not providing cosmic time and fast growth factor large enough to allow for the building up of the observed abundance of BHs; in particular, models with -1.2 \leq w_0 \leq -1 and positive redshift evolution w_a > 0.8 - completely consistent with previous constraints - are strongly disfavoured by our independent constraints from BH abundance. Such range of parameters corresponds to "Quintom" DDE models, with w crossing -1 starting from larger values.

We present a long (≈76 ks) Chandra observation of IRAS 09104+4109, a hyperluminous galaxy, optically classified as a type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) hosted in a cD galaxy in a cluster at z = 0.442. We also report on the results obtained by fitting its broad-band spectral energy distribution. The Compton-thick nature of this source (which has been often referred to as an ‘archetype’ of Compton-thick type 2 quasars) was formerly claimed on the basis of its marginal detection in the Phoswich Detection System (PDS) instrument onboard BeppoSAX, being then disputed usingXMM–Newton data. BothChandra analysis and optical/mid-infrared (IR) spectral fitting are consistent with the presence of heavy (≈1–5 × 10 23 cm −2 ), but not extreme (Compton-thick) obscuration. However, using the mid-IR and the [O III] emission as proxies of the nuclear hard X-ray luminosity suggests the presence of heavier obscuration. The 54-month Swift BAT map shows excess hard X-ray emission likely related to a nearby (z = 0.009) type 2 AGN, close enough to IRAS 09104+4109 to significantly enhance and contaminate its emission in the early BeppoSAX PDS data.

Infections caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV) are a significant world health problem for which novel therapies are in urgent demand. The polymerase of HCV is responsible for the replication of viral genome and has been a prime target for drug discovery efforts. Here, we report on the further development of tetracyclic indole inhibitors, binding to an allosteric site on the thumb domain. Structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies around an indolo-benzoxazocine scaffold led to the identification of compound 33 (MK-3281), an inhibitor with good potency in the HCV subgenomic replication assay and attractive molecular properties suitable for a clinical candidate. The compound caused a consistent decrease in viremia in vivo using the chimeric mouse model of HCV infection.

We have studied the large scale distribution of matter in the Chandra Deep Field South on the basis of photometric redshifts and we have identifed several over-densities between redshift 0.6 and 2.3. We analyse two of these structures using the deepest X-ray observations ever obtained: 4 Ms with the Chandra satellite and 2.5 Ms with XMM-Newton. We set a very faint upper limit on the X-ray luminosity of a structure at redshift 1.6, and we find an extended X-ray emission from a structure at redshift 0.96 of which we can estimate the gas temperature and make a comparison with the scaling relations between the X-ray luminosity and mass or temperature of high redshift galaxy clusters., 4 pages, 3 figures, IAU Symposium N. 277

We report the discovery of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) pair in the interacting galaxy system IRAS 20210+1121 at z = 0.056. An XMM-Newton observation reveals the presence of an obscured (Nh ~ 5 x 10^{23} cm^-2), Seyfert-like (L_{2-10 keV} = 4.7 x 10^{42} erg/s) nucleus in the northern galaxy, which lacks unambiguous optical AGN signatures. Our spectral analysis also provides strong evidence that the IR-luminous southern galaxy hosts a Type 2 quasar embedded in a bright starburst emission. In particular, the X-ray primary continuum from the nucleus appears totally depressed in the XMM-Newton band as expected in case of a Compton-Thick absorber, and only the emission produced by Compton scattering ('reflection') of the continuum from circumnuclear matter is seen. As such, IRAS 20210+1121 seems to provide an excellent opportunity to witness a key, early phase in the quasar evolution predicted by the theoretical models of quasar activation by galaxy collisions.

We present ALMA and ACA [CI]$^{3}P_{1}-^{3}P_{0}$ ([CI](1-0)) observations of NGC6240, which we combine with ALMA CO(2-1) and IRAM PdBI CO(1-0) data to study the physical properties of the massive molecular (H$_2$) outflow. We discover that the receding and approaching sides of the H$_2$ outflow, aligned east-west, exceed 10 kpc in their total extent. High resolution ($0.24"$) [CI](1-0) line images surprisingly reveal that the outflow emission peaks between the two AGNs, rather than on either of the two, and that it dominates the velocity field in this nuclear region. We combine the [CI](1-0) and CO(1-0) data to constrain the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$) in the outflow, which is on average $2.1\pm1.2~\rm M_{\odot} (K~km~s^{-1}~pc^2)^{-1}$. We estimate that $60\pm20$ % of the total H$_2$ gas reservoir of NGC6240 is entrained in the outflow, for a resulting mass-loss rate of $\dot{M}_{\rm out}=2500\pm1200~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ $\equiv 50\pm30$ SFR. This energetics rules out a solely star formation-driven wind, but the puzzling morphology challenges a classic radiative-mode AGN feedback scenario. For the quiescent gas we compute $\langle\alpha_{\rm CO}\rangle = 3.2\pm1.8~\rm M_{\odot} (K~km~s^{-1}~pc^2)^{-1}$, which is at least twice the value commonly employed for (U)LIRGs. We observe a tentative trend of increasing $r_{21}\equiv L^{\prime}_{\rm CO(2-1)}/L^{\prime}_{\rm CO(1-0)}$ ratios with velocity dispersion and measure $r_{21}>1$ in the outflow, whereas $r_{21}\simeq1$ in the quiescent gas. We propose that molecular outflows are the location of the warmer, strongly unbound phase that partially reduces the opacity of the CO lines in (U)LIRGs, hence driving down their global $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ and increasing their $r_{21}$ values., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We studied the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) radio emission from a compilation of hard X-ray selected samples, all observed in the 1.4 GHz band. A total of more than 1600 AGN with 2-10 keV de-absorbed luminosities higher than 10^42 erg/s were used. For a sub-sample of about 50 z\lsim 0.1 AGN it was possible to reach a ~80% fraction of radio detections and therefore, for the first time, it was possible to almost completely measure the probability distribution function of the ratio between the radio and the X-ray luminosity Rx=log[L(1.4)/Lx]. The probability distribution function of Rx was functionally fitted as dependent on the X-ray luminosity and redshift, P(Rx|Lx,z). The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vivo absorption enhancement of a nucleoside (phosphoramidate prodrug of 2'-methyl-cytidine) anti-viral agent of proven efficacy by means of intestinal permeation enhancers. Natural nucleosides are hydrophilic molecules that do not rapidly penetrate cell membranes by diffusion and their absorption relies on specialized transporters. Therefore, the oral absorption of nucleoside prodrugs and the target organ concentration of the biologically active nucleotide can be limited due to poor permeation across the intestinal epithelium. In the present study, the specificity, concentration dependence, and effect of four classes of absorption promoters, i.e. fatty acids, steroidal detergents, mucoadhesive polymers, and secretory transport inhibitors, were evaluated in a rat in vivo model. Sodium caprate and alpha-tocopheryl-polyethyleneglycol-1000-succinate (TPGS) showed a significant effect in increasing liver concentration of nucleotide (5-fold). These results suggested that both excipients might be suited in a controlled release matrix for the synchronous release of the drug and absorption promoter directly to the site of absorption and highlights that the effect is strictly dependent on the absorption promoter dose. The feasibility of such a formulation approach in humans was evaluated with the aim of developing a solid dosage form for the peroral delivery of nucleosides and showed that these excipients do provide a potential valuable tool in pre-clinical efficacy studies to drive discovery programs forward.

Infections caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) are a significant world health problem for which novel therapies are in urgent demand. The NS5B polymerase of HCV is responsible for the replication of viral RNA and has been a prime target in the search for novel treatment options. We had discovered allosteric finger-loop inhibitors based on a thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole scaffold as an alternative to the related indole inhibitors. Optimization of the thienopyrrole series led to several N-acetamides with submicromolar potency in the cell-based replicon assay, but they lacked oral bioavailability in rats. By linking the N4-position to the ortho-position of the C5-aryl group, we were able to identify the tetracyclic thienopyrrole 40, which displayed a favorable pharmacokinetic profile in rats and dogs and is equipotent with recently disclosed finger-loop inhibitors based on an indole scaffold.

The co-evolution of host galaxies and the active black holes which reside in their centre is one of the most important topics in modern observational cosmology. Here we present a study of the properties of obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) detected in the CDFS 1Ms observation and their host galaxies. We limited the analysis to the MUSIC area, for which deep K-band observations obtained with ISAAC@VLT are available, ensuring accurate identifications of the counterparts of the X-ray sources as well as reliable determination of photometric redshifts and galaxy parameters, such as stellar masses and star formation rates. In particular, we: 1) refined the X-ray/infrared/optical association of 179 sources in the MUSIC area detected in the Chandra observation; 2) studied the host galaxies observed and rest frame colors and properties. We found that X-ray selected (L_X>10^{42} erg s^{-1}) AGN show Spitzer colors consistent with both AGN and starburst dominated infrared continuum; the latter would not have been selected as AGN from infrared diagnostics. The host galaxies of X-ray selected obscured AGN are all massive (M_*>10^{10} M_sun) and, in 50% of the cases, are also actively forming stars (1/SSFR1 and M_*>3x10^{11} M_sun, a fraction significantly higher than in the local Universe for AGN of similar luminosities., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, to match with the pubslihed version, A&A, 507, 1277

The currently approved treatment for hepatitis C virus infections is a combination of Ribavirin and pegylated Interferon. It leads to a sustained virologic response in approximately only half of the patients treated. For this reason there is an urgent need of new therapeutic agents. 2'-C-Methylcytidine is the first nucleoside inhibitor of the HCV NS5B polymerase that was efficacious in reducing the viral load in patients infected with HCV. The application of a monophosphate prodrug approach based on unprecedented cyclic phosphoramidates is reported. Our SAR studies led to compounds that are efficiently converted to the active triphosphate in human hepatocytes.

We study the Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) environment and intervening absorbers by analyzing the optical absorption features produced by gas surrounding the GRB or along its line of sight. We analyzed high resolution spectroscopic observations (R=40000, S/N=3 - 6) of the optical afterglow of GRB080330, taken with UVES at the VLT ~ 1.5 hours after the GRB trigger. The spectrum illustrates the complexity of the ISM of the GRB host galaxy at z = 1.51 which has at least four components in the main absorption system. We detect strong FeII, SiII, and NiII excited absorption lines associated with the bluemost component only. In addition to the host galaxy, at least two more absorbers lying along the line of sight to the afterglow have been detected in the redshift range 0.8 < z < 1.1, each exhibiting MgII absorption. For the bluemost component in the host galaxy, we derive information about its distance from the site of the GRB explosion. We do so by assuming that the excited absorption lines are produced by indirect UV pumping, and compare the data with a time dependent photo-excitation code. The distance of this component is found to be 280+40-50 pc, which is lower than found for other GRBs (1 - 6 kpc). We identify two additional MgII absorbers, one of them with a rest frame equivalent width larger than 1A. The distance between the GRB and the absorber measured in this paper confirms that the power of the GRB radiation can influence the conditions of the interstellar medium up to a distance of at least several hundred pc. The optimization of a potent, class I selective ketone HDAC inhibitor is shown. It possesses optimized pharmacokinetic properties in preclinical species, has a clean off-target profile, and is negative in a microbial mutagenicity (Ames) test. In a mouse xenograft model it shows efficacy comparable to that of vorinostat at a 10-fold reduced dose.

Aims: The aim of this work is to collect a complete, mass--selected sample of galaxies with very low specific star formation rate, for a comparison with the prediction of recent theoretical models. Method: We use the 24/K flux ratio, complemented by the SED fitting to the full 0.35-8.0 mum spectral distribution, to select quiescent galaxies from z~0.4 to z~4 in the GOODS--MUSIC sample. Our observational selection can be translated into thresholds on the specific star formation rate SFR/M_*, that can be used to compare with the theoretical predictions. Results: We find that, in the framework of the well known global decline of the quiescent fraction with redshift, a non-negligible fraction ~15-20% of massive galaxies with very low specific star formation rate exists up to z~4, including a tail of "Red&Dead" galaxies with SFR/M_*, The replaced version matches the published one (typos corrected)

We present the results of a Suzaku monitoring campaign of the Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 7582. The source is characterized by very rapid (on timescales even lower than a day) changes of the column density of an inner absorber, together with the presence of constant components arising as reprocessing from a Compton-thick material. The best-fitting scenario implies important modifications to the zeroth-order view of Unified Models. While the existence of a pc-scale torus is needed in order to produce a constant Compton reflection component and an iron Kα-emission line, in this Seyfert 2 galaxy this is not viewed along the line of sight. On the other hand, the absorption of the primary continuum is due to another material, much closer to the black hole, roughly at the distance of the broad-line region, which can produce the observed rapid spectral variability. On top of that, the constant presence of a 1022 cm–2 column density can be ascribed to the presence of a dust lane, extended on a galactic scale, as previously confirmed by Chandra. There is now mounting evidence that complexity in the obscuration of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) may be the rule rather than the exception. We therefore propose to modify the Unification Model, adding to the torus the presence of two further absorbers/emitters. Their combination along the line of sight can reproduce all the observed phenomenology.

A variety of new prodrugs of 2'-methyl cytidine based on acyloxy ethylamino phosphoramidates have been synthesized and tested in vitro and in vivo for their biological activity. Compared with the parent drug a 10- to 20-fold increase in formation of nucleotide triphosphate in rat and human hepatocytes could be achieved.

We are conducting a search for supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses below 10^7 M_sun by looking for signs of extremely low-level nuclear activity in nearby galaxies that are not known to be AGNs. Our survey has the following characteristics: (a) X-ray selection using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, since x-rays are a ubiquitous feature of AGNs; (b) Emphasis on late-type spiral and dwarf galaxies, as the galaxies most likely to have low-mass SMBHs; (c) Use of multiwavelength data to verify the source is an AGN; and (d) Use of the highest angular resolution available for observations in x-rays and other bands, to separate nuclear from off-nuclear sources and to minimize contamination by host galaxy light. Here we show the feasibility of this technique to find AGNs by applying it to six nearby, face-on spiral galaxies (NGC 3169, NGC 3184, NGC 4102, NGC 4647, NGC 4713, NGC 5457) for which data already exist in the Chandra archive. All six show nuclear x-ray sources. The data as they exist at present are ambiguous regarding the nature of the nuclear x-ray sources in NGC 4713 and NGC 4647. We conclude, in accord with previous studies, that NGC 3169 and NGC 4102 are almost certainly AGNs. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors offer a promising strategy for cancer therapy and the first generation HDAC inhibitors are currently in the clinic. Herein we describe the optimization of a series of ketone small molecule HDAC inhibitors leading to potent and selective class I HDAC inhibitors with good dog PK.

The only supernovae (SNe) to have shown early gamma-ray or X-ray emission thus far are overenergetic, broad-lined Type Ic SNe (Hypernovae - HNe). Recently, SN 2008D shows several novel features: (i) weak XRF, (ii) an early, narrow optical peak, (iii) disappearance of the broad lines typical of SNIc HNe, (iv) development of He lines as in SNeIb. Detailed analysis shows that SN 2008D was not a normal SN: its explosion energy (KE ~ 6*10^{51} erg) and ejected mass (~7 Msun) are intermediate between normal SNeIbc and HNe. We derive that SN 2008D was originally a ~30Msun star. When it collapsed a black hole formed and a weak, mildly relativistic jet was produced, which caused the XRF. SN 2008D is probably among the weakest explosions that produce relativistic jets. We present a detailed spectral analysis of point-like X-ray sources in the XMM-COSMOS field. Our sample of 135 sources only includes those that have more than 100 net counts in the 0.3-10 keV energy band and have been identified through optical spectroscopy. The majority of the sources are well described by a simple power-law model with either no absorption (76%) or a significant intrinsic, absorbing column (20%).As expected, the distribution of intrinsic absorbing column densities is markedly different between AGN with or without broad optical emission lines. We find within our sample four Type-2 QSOs candidates (L_X > 10^44 erg/s, N_H > 10^22 cm^-2), with a spectral energy distribution well reproduced by a composite Seyfert-2 spectrum, that demonstrates the strength of the wide field XMM/COSMOS survey to detect these rare and underrepresented sources., 16 pages, ApJS COSMOS Special Issue, 2007 in press. Long Gamma Ray Bursts hold the promise of probing star-formation and metal enrichment up to very high redshifts. The present GRB samples with redshift determination are largely incomplete and therefore a careful analysis of selection effects is mandatory before any conclusion can be drawn from the observed GRB redshift distribution. We study and compare three well defined samples of long GRBs detected by Swift, HETE2 and BeppoSAX. We find that Swift GRBs are slighly fainter and harder than BeppoSAX and HETE2 GRBs, as expected due to the higher energy range in which Swift GRBs are detected and localized, compared to BeppoSAX and HETE2. Gas and dust obscuration plays a role in shaping the GRB samples and the present samples of GRBs with redshift. We have analyzed the two longest (elapsed time > 3 days) BeppoSAX observations of the X-ray brightest Seyfert galaxy, NGC 4151, to search for spectral variability on time-scales from a few tens of ksec to years. We found in both cases highly significant spectral variability below ~ 6 keV down to the shortest time-scales investigated. These variations can be naturally explained in terms of variations in the low energy cut-off due to obscuring matter along the line of sight. If the cut-off is modeled by two neutral absorption components, one fully covering the source and the second covering only a fraction of the source, the shortest time-scale of variability of a few days constrains the location of the obscuring matter to within 3.4 X 10^4 Schwarzschild radii from the central X-ray source. This is consistent with the distance of the Broad Emission Line Region, as inferred from reverberation mapping, and difficult to reconcile with the parsec scale dusty molecular torus of Krolik & Begelman (1988). We have also explored a more complex absorption structure, namely the presence of an ionized absorber. Although the behaviour of the ionization parameter is nicely consistent with the expectations, the results are not completely satisfactory from the statistical point of view. The overall absorption during the 2001 December observation is lower than in all other historical observations with similar 2-10 keV flux. This suggests that absorption variability plays a crucial role in the observed flux variability of this source.

Aims: We aim at estimating the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and the physical parameters related to the black holes harbored in eight high X-ray-to-optical (F_X/F_R>10) obscured quasars at z>0.9 selected in the 2--10 keV band from the HELLAS2XMM survey. Methods: We use IRAC and MIPS 24 micron observations, along with optical and Ks-band photometry, to obtain the SEDs of the sources. The observed SEDs are modeled using a combination of an elliptical template and torus emission (using the phenomenological templates of Silva et al. 2004) for six sources associated with passive galaxies; for two point-like sources, the empirical SEDs of red quasars are adopted. The bolometric luminosities and the M_BH-L_K relation are used to provide an estimate of the masses and Eddington ratios of the black holes residing in these AGN. Results: All of our sources are detected in the IRAC and MIPS (at 24 micron) bands. The SED modeling described above is in good agreement with the observed near- and mid-infrared data. The derived bolometric luminosities are in the range ~10^45-10^47 erg s^-1, and the median 2--10 keV bolometric correction is ~25, consistent with the widely adopted value derived by Elvis et al. (1994). For the objects with elliptical-like profiles in the K_s band, we derive high stellar masses (0.8-6.2)X10^11 Mo, black hole masses in the range (0.2-2.5)X10^9 Mo, and Eddington ratios L/L_Edd, 12 pages, 6 figures, A&A accepted. We present a broad-band (~0.3-70 keV) spectral and temporal analysis of NuSTAR observations of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240, combined with archival Chandra, XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX data. NGC 6240 is a galaxy in a relatively early merger state with two distinct nuclei separated by ~1."5. Previous Chandra observations have resolved the two nuclei, showing that they are both active and obscured by Compton-thick material. Although they cannot be resolved by NuSTAR, thanks to the unprecedented quality of the NuSTAR data at energies >10 keV, we clearly detect, for the first time, both the primary and the reflection continuum components. The NuSTAR hard X-ray spectrum is dominated by the primary continuum piercing through an absorbing column density which is mildly optically thick to Compton scattering (tau ~ 1.2, N_H ~ 1.5 x 10^(24) cm^-2). We detect moderate hard X-ray (> 10 keV) flux variability up to 20% on short (15-20 ksec) timescales. The amplitude of the variability is maximum at ~30 keV and is likely to originate from the primary continuum of the southern nucleus. Nevertheless, the mean hard X-ray flux on longer timescales (years) is relatively constant. Moreover, the two nuclei remain Compton-thick, although we find evidence of variability of the material along the line of sight with column densities N_H, Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) are associated with the death of massive stars. Their host galaxies therefore represent a unique class of objects tracing star formation across the observable Universe. Indeed, recently accumulated evidence shows that GRB hosts do not differ substantially from general population of galaxies at high (z > 2) redshifts. However, it has been long recognised that the properties of z < 1.5 hosts, compared to general star-forming population, are unusual. To better understand the reasons for the supposed difference in LGRB hosts properties at z < 1.5, we obtained VLT/X- Shooter spectra of six hosts lying in the redshift range of 0.8 < z < 1.3. Some of these hosts have been observed before, yet we still lack well constrained information on their characteristics such as metallicity, dust extinction and star formation rate. We search for emission lines in the VLT/X-Shooter spectra of the hosts and measure their fluxes. We perform a detailed analysis, estimating host average extinction, star-formation rates, metallicities and electron densities where possible. Measured quantities of our hosts are compared to a larger sample of previously observed GRB hosts at z < 2. Star-formation rates and metallicities are measured for all the hosts analyzed in this paper and metallicities are well determined for 4 hosts. The mass-metallicity relation, the fundamental metallicity relation and SFRs derived from our hosts occupy similar parameter space as other host galaxies investigated so-far at the same redshift. We therefore conclude that GRB hosts in our sample support the found discrepancy between the properties of low-redshift GRB hosts and the general population of star- forming galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In order to derive the AGN contribution to the cosmological ionizing emissivity we have selected faint AGN candidates at $z>4$ in the CANDELS GOODS-South field which is one of the deepest fields with extensive multiwavelength coverage from Chandra, HST, Spitzer and various groundbased telescopes. We have adopted a relatively novel criterion. As a first step high redshift galaxies are selected in the NIR $H$ band down to very faint levels ($H\leq27$) using reliable photometric redshifts. This corresponds at $z>4$ to a selection criterion based on the galaxy rest-frame UV flux. AGN candidates are then picked up from this parent sample if they show X-ray fluxes above a threshold of $F_X\sim 1.5\times 10^{-17}$ cgs (0.5-2 keV). We have found 22 AGN candidates at $z>4$ and we have derived the first estimate of the UV luminosity function in the redshift interval $4, Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, A&A accepted, updated figure 6, corrected typo in table 3, updated references

This White Paper presents the scientific motivations for a multi-object spectrograph (MOS) on the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The MOS case draws on all fields of contemporary astronomy, from extra-solar planets, to the study of the halo of the Milky Way and its satellites, and from resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies out to observations of the earliest 'first-light' structures in the partially-reionised Universe. The material presented here results from thorough discussions within the community over the past four years, building on the past competitive studies to agree a common strategy toward realising a MOS capability on the E-ELT. The cases have been distilled to a set of common requirements which will be used to define the MOSAIC instrument, entailing two observational modes ('high multiplex' and 'high definition'). When combined with the unprecedented sensitivity of the E-ELT, MOSAIC will be the world's leading MOS facility. In analysing the requirements we also identify a high-multiplex MOS for the longer-term plans for the E-ELT, with an even greater multiplex (>1000 targets) to enable studies of large-scale structures in the high-redshift Universe. Following the green light for the construction of the E-ELT the MOS community, structured through the MOSAIC consortium, is eager to realise a MOS on the E-ELT as soon as possible. We argue that several of the most compelling cases for ELT science, in highly competitive areas of modern astronomy, demand such a capability. For example, MOS observations in the early stages of E-ELT operations will be essential for follow-up of sources identified by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In particular, multi-object adaptive optics and accurate sky subtraction with fibres have both recently been demonstrated on sky, making fast-track development of MOSAIC feasible.

In active galactic nuclei (AGN)-galaxy co-evolution models, AGN winds and outflows are often invoked to explain why super-massive black holes and galaxies stop growing efficiently at a certain phase of their lives. They are commonly referred to as the leading actors of feedback processes. Evidence of ultra-fast (v ≳ 0.05c) outflows in the innermost regions of AGN has been collected in the past decade by sensitive X-ray observations for sizable samples of AGN, mostly at low redshift. Here we present ultra-deep XMM-Newton and Chandra spectral data of an obscured (N≈ 2 × 10 cm), intrinsically luminous (L≈ 4 × 10 erg s) quasar (named PID352) at z ≈ 1.6 (derived from the X-ray spectral analysis) in the Chandra Deep Field-South. The source is characterized by an iron emission and absorption line complex at observed energies of E ≈ 2-3 keV. While the emission line is interpreted as being due to neutral iron (consistent with the presence of cold absorption), the absorption feature is due to highly ionized iron transitions (FeXXV, FeXXVI) with an outflowing velocity of 0.14 , as derived from photoionization models. The mass outflow rate - ∼2 M yr - is similar to the source accretion rate, and the derived mechanical energy rate is ∼9.5 × 10 erg s, corresponding to 9% of the source bolometric luminosity. PID352 represents one of the few cases where indications of X-ray outflowing gas have been observed at high redshift thus far. We present new data for four candidate obscured Compton-Thick (CT) quasars at z $\sim$1-2.5 observed with SINFONI VLT spectrograph in AO mode. These sources were selected from a 24$\mu$m Spitzer MIPS survey of the COSMOS field, on the basis of red mid-infrared-to-optical and optical-to-near-infrared colours, with the intention of identifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in dust enshrouded environments, where most of the black hole mass is assembled in dust enshrouded environments. Near infrared spectra were analyzed in order to check for emission line features and to search for broad components in the [OIII]-H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$-[NII] regions. X-ray spectral analysis, radio and MIR diagnostics, and SED fitting have also been employed to study the nature of the sources. We successfully identified three objects for which we had only a photometric redshift estimate. Based on their emission line diagnostics and on ancillary multi-wavelength constraints, we find that all four targets harbor obscured AGNs. Broad profiles that could be attributed to the effects of outflows are revealed in only one target, MIRO20581. In particular, we clearly resolved a fast ($\sim$1600 km/s) and extended ($\sim$5 kpc) outflow in the [OIII]5007 emission line. This feature, the commonly used indicator for ionised outflowing gas, was sampled and detected only for this target; hence, we can not exclude the presence of outflows in the other sources. Overall, the constraints we obtain from our targets and from other comparative samples from the literature suggest that these optically faint luminous infrared galaxies, hosting obscured AGNs, may represent a brief evolutionary phase between the post-merger starburst and the unobscured QSO phases., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Concerted effort is currently ongoing to open up the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) ($z\sim$15-6) for studies with IR and radio telescopes. Whereas IR detections have been made of sources (Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters, quasars and drop-outs) in this redshift regime in relatively small fields of view, no direct detection of neutral hydrogen, via the redshifted 21-cm line, has yet been established. Such a direct detection is expected in the coming years, with ongoing surveys, and could open up the entire universe from $z\sim$6-200 for astrophysical and cosmological studies, opening not only the EoR, but also its preceding Cosmic Dawn ($z\sim$30-15) and possibly even the later phases of the Dark Ages ($z\sim$200-30). All currently ongoing experiments attempt statistical detections of the 21-cm signal during the EoR, with limited signal-to-noise. Direct imaging, except maybe on the largest (degree) scales at lower redshifts, as well as higher redshifts will remain out of reach. The Square Kilometre Array(SKA) will revolutionize the field, allowing direct imaging of neutral hydrogen from scales of arc-minutes to degrees over most of the redshift range $z\sim$6-28 with SKA1-LOW, and possibly even higher redshifts with the SKA2-LOW. In this SKA will be unique, and in parallel provide enormous potential of synergy with other upcoming facilities (e.g. JWST). In this chapter we summarize the physics of 21-cm emission, the different phases the universe is thought to go through, and the observables that the SKA can probe, referring where needed to detailed chapters in this volume (Abridged).

AGN-driven outflows are invoked by galaxy evolutionary models to quench star formation and to explain the origin of the relations observed locally between super massive black holes and their host galaxies. This work aims to detect the presence of extended ionised outflows in luminous quasars where we expect the maximum activity both in star formation and in black hole accretion. Currently, there are only a few studies based on spatially resolved observations of outflows at high redshift, $z>2$. We analyse a sample of six luminous (${\rm L>10^{47} \ erg/s}$) quasars at $z\sim2.4$, observed in H-band using the near-IR integral field spectrometer SINFONI at VLT. We perform a kinematic analysis of the [OIII] emission line at $\lambda = 5007\AA$. [OIII] has a complex gas kinematic, with blue-shifted velocities of a few hundreds of km/s and line widths up to 1500 km/s. Using the spectroastrometric method we infer size of the ionised outflows of up to $\sim$2 kpc. The properties of the ionised outflows, mass outflow rate, momentum rate and kinetic power, are correlated with the AGN luminosity. The increase in outflow rate with increasing AGN luminosity is consistent with the idea that a luminous AGN pushes away the surrounding gas through fast outflows driven by radiation pressure, which depends on the emitted luminosity. We derive mass outflow rates of about 6-700 M$_{\odot}$/yr for our sample, which are lower than those observed in molecular outflows. Indeed physical properties of ionised outflows show dependences on AGN luminosity which are similar to those of molecular outflows but indicating that the mass of ionised gas is smaller than that of the molecular one. Alternatively, this discrepancy between ionised and molecular outflows could be explained with different acceleration mechanisms., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

Using an advanced semi-analytical model (SAM) for galaxy formation, we investigated the statistical effects of assuming two different mechanisms for triggering AGN activity on the properties of AGN host galaxies. We considered a first accretion mode where AGN activity is triggered by disk instabilities (DI) in isolated galaxies, and a second feeding mode where galaxy mergers and fly-by events (interactions, IT) are responsible for producing a sudden destabilization of large quantities of gas, causing the mass inflow onto the central supermassive black hole. The effects of including IT and DI modes in our SAM were studied and compared with observations separately to single out the regimes in which they might be responsible for triggering AGN activity. We obtained the following results: i) the predictions of our model concerning the stellar mass functions of AGN hosts point out that both DI and IT modes are able to account for the observed abundance of AGN host galaxies with M∗ ≲ 1011M☉; for more massive hosts, the DI scenario predicts a much lower space density than the IT model in every redshift bin, lying below the observational estimates for redshift z > 0.8. ii) The analysis of the colour-magnitude diagram of AGN hosts for redshift z < 1.5 can provide a good observational test to effectively distinguish between DI and IT mode, since DIs are expected to yield AGN host galaxy colours skewed towards bluer colours, while in the IT scenario the majority of hosts are expected to reside in the red sequence. iii) While both IT and DI scenarios can account for AGN triggered in main sequence or starburst galaxies, DIs fail in triggering AGN activity in passive galaxies. The lack of DI AGN in passive hosts is rather insensitive to changes in the model describing the DI mass inflow, and it is mainly caused by the criterion for the onset of disk instabilities included in our SAM. iv) The two modes are characterized by a different duration of the AGN phase, with DIs lasting even on time scales of ~Gyr, much longer than in the IT scenario, where the galaxy interaction sets the duration of the burst phase around ~ 107 - 108 yr. v) The scatter of the star formation rate SFR - Lbol relation could represent another crucial diagnostics to distinguish between the two AGN triggering modes, since the DI scenario predicts an appreciably lower scatter (especially at low-to-intermediate AGN luminosities) of the relation than the IT scenario. vi) Disk instabilities are unable to account for the observed fraction of AGN in groups for z ≲ 1 and clusters for z ≲ 0.7, while the IT scenario matches observational data well.

We present the first X-ray spectrum of a Hot dust-obscured galaxy (DOG), namely W1835+4355 at z ~ 2.3. Hot DOGs represent a very rare population of hyperluminous (>= 10^47 erg/s), dust-enshrouded objects at z > 2 recently discovered in the WISE All Sky Survey. The 40 ks XMM-Newton spectrum reveals a continuum as flat (Gamma ~ 0.8) as typically seen in heavily obscured AGN. This, along with the presence of strong Fe Kalpha emission, clearly suggests a reflection-dominated spectrum due to Compton-thick absorption. In this scenario, the observed luminosity of L(2-10 keV) ~ 2 x 10^44 erg/s is a fraction (~ 5 x 10^45 erg/s by using several proxies. The Herschel data allow us to constrain the SED up to the sub-mm band, providing a reliable estimate of the quasar contribution (~ 75%) to the IR luminosity as well as the amount of star formation (~ 2100 Msun/yr). Our results thus provide additional pieces of evidence that associate Hot DOGs with an exceptionally dusty phase during which luminous quasars and massive galaxies co-evolve and a very efficient and powerful AGN-driven feedback mechanism is predicted by models., Accepted for publication in A&A Letters

In the last decade, using single epoch (SE) virial based spectroscopic optical observations, it has been possible to measure the black hole (BH) mass on large type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) samples. However this kind of measurements can not be applied on those obscured type 2 and/or low luminosity AGN where the nuclear component does not dominate in the optical. We have derived new SE relationships, based on the FWHM and luminosity of the broad line region component of the Pabeta emission line and/or the hard X-ray luminosity in the 14-195 keV band, which have the prospect of better working with low luminosity or obscured AGN. The SE relationships have been calibrated in the 10^5-10^9 M_sol mass range, using a sample of AGN whose BH masses have been previously measured using reverberation mapping techniques. Our tightest relationship between the reverberation-based BH mass and the SE virial product has an intrinsic spread of 0.20 dex. Thanks to these SE relations, in agreement with previous estimates, we have measured a BH mass of M_BH =1.7^+1.3_-0.7 X 10^5 M_sol for the low luminosity, type 1, AGN NGC 4395 (one of the smallest active galactic BH known). We also measured, for the first time, a BH mass of M_BH = 1.5^+1.1_-0.6 X 10^7 M_sol for the Seyfert 2 galaxy MCG -01-24-012., 10 pages, 7 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

Gas outflows are believed to play a pivotal role in shaping galaxies, as they regulate both star formation and black hole growth. Despite their ubiquitous presence, the origin and the acceleration mechanism of such powerful and extended winds is not yet understood. Direct observations of the cold gas component in objects with detected outflows at other wavelengths are needed to assess the impact of the outflow on the host galaxy interstellar medium (ISM). We observed with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer an obscured quasar at z~1.5, XID2028, for which the presence of an ionised outflow has been unambiguously signalled by NIR spectroscopy. The detection of CO(3-2) emission in this source allows us to infer the molecular gas content and compare it to the ISM mass derived from the dust emission. We then analyze the results in the context of recent insights on scaling relations, which describe the gas content of the overall population of star-forming galaxies at a similar redshifts. The Star formation efficiency (~100) and gas mass (M_gas=2.1-9.5x10^{10} M_sun) inferred from the CO(3-2) line depend on the underlying assumptions on the excitation of the transition and the CO-to-H2 conversion factor. However, the combination of this information and the ISM mass estimated from the dust mass suggests that the ISM/gas content of XID2028 is significantly lower than expected for its observed M$_\star$, sSFR and redshift, based on the most up-to-date calibrations (with gas fraction, 8 pages, 4 figures. Past observations of QSO host galaxies at z >6 have found cold gas and star formation on compact scales of a few kiloparsecs. We present new high sensitivity IRAM PdBI follow-up observations of the [CII] 158micron emission line and FIR continuum in the host galaxy of SDSS J1148+5152, a luminous QSO at redshift 6.4189. We find that a large fraction of the gas traced by [CII] is at high velocities, up to ~1400 km/s relative to the systemic velocity, confirming the presence of a major quasar-driven outflow indicated by previous observations. The outflow has a complex morphology and reaches a maximum projected radius of ~30 kpc. The extreme spatial extent of the outflow allows us, for the first time in an external galaxy, to estimate mass-loss rate, kinetic power and momentum rate of the outflow as a function of the projected distance from the nucleus and the dynamical time-scale. These trends reveal multiple outflow events during the past 100 Myr, although the bulk of the mass, energy and momentum appear to have been released more recently, within the past ~20 Myr. Surprisingly, we discover that also the quiescent gas at systemic velocity is extremely extended. More specifically, we find that, while 30% of the [CII] within v\in(-200, 200) km/s traces a compact component that is not resolved by our observations, 70% of the [CII] emission in this velocity range is extended, with a projected FWHM size of 17.4+-1.4 kpc. We detect FIR continuum emission associated with both the compact and the extended [CII] components, although the extended FIR emission has a FWHM of 11+-3 kpc, thus smaller than the extended [CII] source. Overall, our results indicate that the cold gas traced by [CII] is distributed up to r~30 kpc. High resolution spectroscopy of GRB 021004 revealed a wealth of absorption lines from several intermediate ionization species. The velocity structure of the absorber is complex and material with velocity up to >3000 km/s is observed. Since only the blueshifted component is observed, the absorber is very likely to be material closely surrounding the gamma-ray burst. We use a time-dependent photoionization code to track the abundance of the ions over time. Thanks to the presence of absorption from intermediate ionization states at long times, we can estimate the location and mass of the components of the absorber. We interpret those constraints within the hypernova scenario showing that the mass loss rate of the progenitor must have been ~10^{-4} solar masses per year, suggestive of a very massive star. In addition, the wind termination shock must lie at a distance of at least 100 pc, implying a low density environment. We have surveyed with XMM-Newton the central ~0.6 deg2 region of the ELAIS-S1 field down to flux limits of ~5.5X10-16 cgs (0.5-2 keV, S band), ~2X10-15 cgs (2-10 keV, H band), and ~4X10-15 cgs (5-10 keV, HH band). We detect a total of 478 sources, 395 and 205 of which detected in the S and H bands respectively. We identified 7 clearly extended sources and estimated their redshift through X-ray spectral fits with thermal models. In four cases the redshift is consistent with z=0.4. We have computed the angular correlation function of the sources in the S and H bands, finding best fit correlation angles theta_0=5.2+/-3.8 arcsec and theta_0=12.8+/-7.8 arcsec respectively. A rough estimate of the present-day correlation length r_0 can be obtained inverting the Limber equation and assuming an appropriate redshift distribution dN/dz. The results range between 12.8 and 9.8 h-1 Mpc in the S band and between 17.9 and 13.4 h-1 Mpc in the H band, with 30-40% statistical errors, assuming either smooth redshift distributions or redshift distributions with spikes accounting for the presence of a structure at z=0.4. The relative density of the S band sources is higher near the clusters and groups at z~0.4 and extends toward East and toward South/West. This suggests that the structure is complex, with a size comparable to the full XMM-Newton field. We report the detection of highly-ionized gas at z~0 seen in resonant UV and X-ray absorption lines toward the z=0.03 blazar Mkn 421. A total of 13 X-ray and 3 UV lines were measured (or upper limits derived), including three lines in the OVII K-series and K\alpha transitions from neon, carbon, and nitrogen.
