Abstract

In perennial grasses, the reproductive development encompasses several phenological events, such as apex induction, floral transition, heading and flowering, that deeply affect biomass production, forage quality and plant perenniality. Despite the importance of perennial grasses in agricultural systems and natural ecosystems, we still lack accurate models predicting the reproductive development and its consequences on plant growth and grassland management. Most of available models implements a fixed scheduling of the reproductive development expressed either in thermal time or in calendar time. The progressive completion of floral induction and the effects of environmental factors are generally poorly described. In addition, the vegetative and reproductive developments are represented as independent and successive phases. In the present work, we introduce the new model LgrassFlo, which simulates the reproductive development of perennial grasses in interaction with plant vegetative development and considering the effects of environmental conditions on floral induction.LgrassFlo simulates the canopy as the dynamics of a collection of individual plants, each being composed of one or more tillers. The 3D description of leaf growth and tillering is based on a functional-structural plant model of perennial ryegrass (Lgrass). We developed a new model of floral induction describing the progression of the primary and secondary induction of each apex of the plant according to (i) the daily temperature, (ii) photoperiod and (iii) plant architecture. This model was coupled to Lgrass, the model ensemble being called LgrassFlo. During apex induction, LgrassFlo accounts for an increase in the rates of leaf primordia initiation and leaf elongation. After floral transition, we assume that the apex only initiates spikelet primordia and that internodes start to elongate. LgrassFlo simulates the date of floral transition, the final number of leaves and the heading date based on a 3D representation of plant architecture.A specific experiment was carried out in order to calibrate LgrassFlo on data describing the vegetative and reproductive development of three Lolium perenne cultivars contrasted for their precocity and exposed to four inductive conditions in growth chambers. The first three conditions consisted in a period allowing for primary induction (low temperature – short day) followed by a period allowing for secondary induction (high temperature – long day), the two periods being spaced by a non-inductive period (high temperature - short day) of 0, 3 or 6 weeks. In the fourth condition, plants were not exposed to conditions allowing for the primary induction. A set of vegetative and reproductive parameters were estimated for each individual plant of the experiment. The parameter values were independent of the experimental treatment but showed a large genetic diversity both between and within varieties. Using this calibration, LgrassFlo satisfactorily predicted the observed diversity in final leaf number and heading date.The present model is a step forward towards a better prediction of perennial grass phenology in actual and future climatic conditions. In this respect, the model is being currently used to simulate the observed genetic diversity in the heading date of several Lolium perenne cultivars grown in contrasted temperate climates over the last 15 years.

Abstract

Reduced blue light irradiance is known to enhance leaf elongation rate (LER) in grasses, but the mechanisms involved have not yet been elucidated. We investigated whether leaf elongation response to reduced blue light could be mediated by stomata-induced variations of plant transpiration. Two experiments were carried out on tall fescue in order to monitor LER and transpiration under reduced blue light irradiance. Additionally, LER dynamics were compared with those observed in the response to vapour pressure deficit (VPD)-induced variations of transpiration. Finally, we developed a model of water flow within a tiller to simulate the observed short-term response of LER to various transpiration regimes. LER dramatically increased in response to blue light reduction and then reached new steady states, which remained higher than the control. Reduced blue light triggered a simultaneous stomatal closure which induced an immediate decrease of leaf transpiration. The hydraulic model of leaf elongation accurately predicted the LER response to blue light and VPD, resulting from an increase in the growth-induced water potential gradient in the leaf growth zone. Our results suggest that the blue light signal is sensed by stomata of expanded leaves and transduced to the leaf growth zone through the hydraulic architecture of the tiller.

Abstract

Non-bilayer phospholipids arrangements (NPAs) are transient molecular associations different from lipid bilayers. When they become stable, they can trigger a disease in mice resembling human lupus, which is mainly characterized by the production of anti-NPA IgG antibodies. NPAs are stabilized on liposomes or cell bilayers by the drugs procainamide or chlorpromazine, which produce drug-induced lupus in humans. Here, we evaluated the participation of the TH 2 response, through its hallmark cytokine IL-4, on the development of the lupus-like disease in mice. Wild-type or IL-4 knockout BALB/c mice received liposomes bearing drug-induced NPAs, the drugs alone, or an anti-NPA monoclonal antibody (H308) to induce the lupus-like disease (the last two procedures stabilize NPAs on mice cells). IL-4 KO mice showed minor disease manifestations, compared to wild-type mice, with decreased production of anti-NPA IgG antibodies, no anti-cardiolipin, anti-histones and anticoagulant antibodies, and no kidney or skin lesions. In these mice, H308 was the only inducer of anti-NPA IgG antibodies. These findings indicate that IL-4 has a central role in the development of the murine lupus-like disease induced by NPA stabilization.

Abstract

Se plantea un sistema conformado por una plataforma administrativa de control de acceso y seguimiento, que brinde la trazabilidad de los individuos ajenos al campus mediante detección facial en el campus además de una app móvil que brinde a los visitantes una guía una vez estos se encuentren en las instalaciones. La aplicación móvil fue diseñada para brindar a los usuarios la posibilidad de registrar sus citas previamente (los datos de la cita agendada con anticipación, los cuales esos datos serán validados al ingreso del campus para darle acceso) y así una vez estos se encuentren dentro del campus brindarles la visualización de un recorrido virtual. Por otro lado, la aplicación cuenta con la posibilidad de una vez dentro del campus solicitar una nueva ruta, escaneando un código Qr suministrado por el personal de seguridad el cual. Luego del acceso, entra en acción un programa realizado en Python que se encarga de todo el seguimiento y trazabilidad mediante reconocimiento facial. Dicho programa se ejecuta de forma permanente una vez se active el sistema y se centra en la realización de consultas a una instancia de MySQL en la nube. El sistema trabaja con dos bases de datos, la primera es una instancia de MySQL en la nube utilizando el servicio de Clever Cloud - MySQL y otra es el servicio de RealTime Database proporcionado por Firebase. La primera es donde se encuentran las tablas que almacenan los visitantes, su historial, alertas y la trazabilidad, los cuales se podrán observar en la plataforma de control de acceso y seguimiento. Mientras que la segunda, es para facilitar el uso de la App Móvil desarrollada para los visitantes, la cual es necesaria si se quiere tener ayuda para llegar al destino seleccionado. En cuanto a la plataforma de gestión, se evidenció que la necesidad de una instancia de MySQL más robusta, dado que este sistema ejecuta consultas permanentemente y se necesita una instancia capaz de en todo tiempo poder brindar una respuesta en todo momento. A system is made up of an administrative platform for access control and monitoring, which provides traceability of individuals outside the campus through facial detection on campus as well as a mobile app that provides visitors with a guide once they are in the installations. The mobile application was designed to provide users with the possibility of registering their appointments previously (the data of the appointment scheduled in advance, which data will be validated at the entrance of the campus to give access) and thus once they are within the campus provide them with the visualization of a virtual tour. On the other hand, the application has the possibility of once inside the campus request a new route, scanning a Qr code supplied by the security personnel which. After accessing, a program made in Python comes into action that takes care of all the monitoring and traceability through facial recognition. This program runs permanently once the system is activated and focuses on querying a MySQL instance in the cloud. The system works with two databases, the first is a MySQL instance in the cloud using the Clever Cloud - MySQL service and the other is the RealTime Database service provided by Firebase. The first is where the tables that store visitors, their history, alerts and traceability are located, which can be observed in the access control and monitoring platform. While the second is to facilitate the use of the Mobile App developed for visitors, which is necessary if you want help to reach the selected destination. Regarding the management platform, it was evidenced that the need for a more robust MySQL instance, since this system executes queries permanently and an instance capable of providing an answer at all times is needed at all times.

Abstract

Rapport d'expertise collective du Comité d’experts spécialisé « Évaluation des risques liés aux milieux aériens ». Groupe de Travail « Ambroisie ». ENG: 'Opinon of the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety on the health impact and related costs of common ragweed in France'; As underlined in a previous ANSES publication (ANSES 2014), common ragweed1releases a highly allergenic pollen that can easily travel long distances and is thus a major public health challenge. Widespread in Hungaryand in northern Italy, ragweed is also found in the Rhône Valley in France. Recent maps have shown wider spread of the plantin France over the past few years.The health impact of ragweed is regularly assessed in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the most affected region of France, by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and the Regional Health Observatory (ORS). According to a telephone survey of the general public, the prevalence of ragweed allergy was estimated at 12.5% to 14.1% in this region and has been increasing since 2004 (Anzivino, Marant-Micallef, andSonko 2014). High spatial disparities have been observed. Expenditure associated with this allergy (including use of medication, consultations and sick leave) was estimated at €8.9 to €13.2 million in 2014 in the Rhône-Alpes region (Gelas 2015). However, the health and economic impact of ragweed still needs to be assessed inthe rest of France (outside of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes).The Third National Environmental Health Action Plan (2015-2019) provides for measures for the monitoring and assessment of ragweed in France, but with no legal framework. Decree no. 2017-645 of 26 April 2017 defines measures intended to prevent the appearance of ragweed or limit its spread; their implementation is placed under the responsibility of prefects after opinions issued by the ARS and the Departmental Council for the Environment and Health and Technological Risks (CODERST).In this context, the Directorate General for Health submitted a formal request to ANSES on 5 April 2018 to:- Document the prevalence of common ragweed allergy and its changes in recent years in France and abroad based onthe level of exposure to ragweed pollen and the level of infestation.- Identify potential mechanisms and factors associated with differentiated changes in this prevalence. These may include intrinsic factors related to the plant (local spread) and extrinsic factors related to human activity and climate change possibly favouring the spread of ragweed.- Estimate the prevalence of ragweed allergy across France and how it may develop based on proposed scenarios of changes in the state of infestation. A distribution by département will be investigated.- Assess the cost of ragweed allergy across France and how it may change taking the same change scenarios into account. A distribution of these costs by départementwill be investigated. The impacts of ragweed vary in nature. In light of the objectives set, this appraisal focused on the health impact and ultimately the costs associated with this impact. However, data are also given for informational purposes to drive reflections concerning the agri-environmental impacts.; Comme l’ont souligné de précédents travaux Anses (Anses 2014), l’ambroisie à feuille d’armoise1émet un pollen fortement allergisant qui est facilement transportable sur de longues distances, constituant ainsi un enjeu de santé publique important. Très présente en Hongrie et au nord de l’Italie, l’ambroisie est également recensée dans la Vallée du Rhône en France. Des cartographies récentes ont mis en évidence une extension de la présence de la plante en France au cours des dernières années.L’impact sanitaire de l’ambroisie est régulièrement évalué en Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, région française la plus touchée, par l’Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS) et l’Observatoire Régional de Santé (ORS). Selon une enquête téléphonique en population générale, la prévalence de l’allergie à l’ambroisie a été estimée entre 12,5% et 14,1% dans cette région, en augmentation depuis 2004 (Anzivino, Marant-Micallef, et Sonko 2014). De fortes disparités spatiales sont constatées. Les dépenses liées à cette allergie (incluant utilisation de médicaments, consultations, et arrêts de travail) ont quant à elles été estimées entre 8,9 et 13,2 millions d’euros en 2014 en Rhône-Alpes(Gelas 2015). Cependant, l’impact sanitaire et économique lié à l’ambroisie reste à estimer dans le reste du territoire français (hors Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Le 3ème Plan national santé-environnement (2015-2019) prévoit des mesures pour la surveillance et l’évaluation de l’ambroisie en France, mais sans cadre juridique. Le décret n°2017-645 du 26 avril 2017 définit les mesures destinées à prévenir l’apparition de l’ambroisie ou lutter contre sa prolifération et dont l’application est placée sous la responsabilité des préfets après avis de l’ARS et du Conseil départemental de l’environnement et des risques sanitaires et technologiques(CODERST).Dans ce cadre, la direction générale de la santé a saisi l’Anses le 05 avril 2018 afin de : •Documenter la prévalence de l’allergie à l’ambroisie à feuilles d’armoise et son évolution au cours des dernières années en France et à l’étranger en fonction notamment du niveau d’exposition au pollen et du niveau d’infestation par la plante.•Identifier les éventuels mécanismes et facteurs associés à l’évolution différenciée de cette prévalence. Il pourra être question des facteurs intrinsèques liés à la plante (propagation sur le territoire) ou des facteurs extrinsèques liés à l’activité humaine et au changement climatique pouvant favoriser la propagation de l’ambroisie.•Estimer la prévalence de l’allergie à l’ambroisie pour l’ensemble du territoire national et son évolution possible sur la base de scénarios d’évolution de l’état d’infestation qui seront proposés. Une distribution par département sera recherchée.•Évaluer le coût de l’allergie à l’ambroisie sur l’ensemble du territoire national et son évolution possible tenant compte des mêmes scénarios d’évolution. Une distribution par département de ces coûts sera recherchée.Les impacts générés par l’ambroisie sont de nature variée. Au regard des objectifs visés, les présents travaux se sont concentrés sur l’impact sanitaire et, in fine, les coûts associés à cet impact. Toutefois, des données pouvant alimenter les réflexions concernant les impacts agro-environnementaux sont citées à titre informatif.

Abstract

Backgrounds and Aims A major challenge when supporting the development of intercropping systems remains the design of efficient species mixtures. The ecological processes that sustain overyielding of legume-based mixtures compared to pure crops are well known, but their links to plant traits remain to be unravelled. A common assumption is that enhancing trait divergence among species for resource acquisition when assembling plant mixtures should increase species complementarity and improve community performance. Methods The Virtual Grassland model was used to assess how divergence in trait values between species on four physiological functions (namely light and mineral N acquisition, temporal development, and C–N use efficiency) affected overyielding and mixture stability in legume-based binary mixtures. A first step allowed us to identify the model parameters that were most important to interspecies competition. A second step involved testing the impact of convergent and divergent parameter (or trait) values between species on virtual mixture performance. Results Maximal overyielding was achieved in cases where trait values were divergent for the physiological functions controlling N acquisition and temporal development but convergent for light interception. It was also found that trait divergence should not affect competitive abilities of legume and non-legumes at random. Indeed, random trait combinations frequently led to reduced mixture yields when compared to a perfectly convergent neutral model. Combinations with the highest overyielding also tended to be associated with mixture instability and decreasing legume biomass proportion. Achieving both high overyielding and mixture stability was only found to be possible under low or moderate N levels, using combinations of traits adapted to each environment. Conclusions No simple assembly rule based on trait divergence could be confirmed. Plant models able to infer plant–plant interactions can be helpful for the identification of major interaction traits and the definition of ideotypes adapted to a targeted intercropping system.

Abstract

El presente escrito nace de las reflexiones de dos trabajos de investigación que giran alrededor de los temas de escritura y lectura en los universitarios y de la concepción de formación docente, vinculada a la idea de ensoñación desde Bachelard; a partir de ahí, se desarrolla una reflexión alrededor de la misma temática pero en la etapa inicial donde se tejen las estructuras fundamentales de los procesos de constitución del sujeto. En ambos trabajos el lenguaje y la didáctica hacen parte primordial del sustento de los mismos. En esas relaciones simbióticas entre sujeto, aprendizaje, didáctica y ensoñación se presenta el tema de la escritura en la búsqueda de generar una idea diferente a asumirla como proceso netamente instrumental, sino unirlo a formas diferentes de su abordaje; siendo la niñez una época de mayor apertura al aprendizaje, concebir la escritura desde estos lugares puede hacer la diferencia de mejorar los procesos escriturales en los años posteriores.

Abstract

Climate change is leading to more intense and more frequent water stress. Since existing forage varieties tend to do best under favourable conditions, new forage varieties are needed. A better understanding of a) the natural diversity of forage species within their distribution ranges and b) the genetics underlying different adaptation strategies could facilitate the creation of a range of varieties that combine sufficient yield with different levels of water stress resistance (growth maintenance) or tolerance (arrested growth and survival). It appears especially important to select for phenological traits (and therefore seasonal growth rates) that better correspond to climatic constraints. In an increasingly changing environment, species mixtures often allow for greater production stability. The attributes of the varieties in the mixture play an essential role in maintaining the balance among species. That said, it is still early days for methods that improve plant varieties with a view to increasing blend performance while maintaining species balance., Le climat évolue vers des stress hydriques plus intenses et plus fréquents. Cette évolution engendre un besoin de nouvelles variétés fourragères afin d’élargir la gamme disponible qui est majoritairement optimisée pour des environnements favorables. Une meilleure connaissance de la diversité naturelle des espèces fourragères sur l’ensemble de leur aire de répartition et en particulier des bases génétiques des différentes stratégies d’adaptation, permettra de créer toute une gamme de variétés alliant une production suffisante et différents niveaux de résistance(maintien de la croissance) ou de tolérance (arrêt de la croissance et survie) aux stress hydriques. En particulier, il apparait essentiel d’ajuster la phénologie, donc les rythmes saisonniers de croissance, aux contraintes climatiques. D’autre part, dans un environnement de plus en plus changeant, le mélange d’espèces permet souvent une meilleure stabilité de la production. Les caractéristiques des variétés du mélange jouent un rôle essentiel dans le maintien de l’équilibre des espèces. Cependant, les méthodes d’amélioration des variétés pour augmenter les performances des mélanges tout en maintenant l’équilibre des espèces n’en sont qu’à leur début

Abstract

La bactérie Xylella fastidiosa, sous-espèce multiplex, a été identifiée pour la première fois en France en 2015. Aujourd’hui, elle est établie dans certaines communes du littoral méditerranéen de la région Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur et dans la région Corse, pour laquelle une stratégie d’enrayement est en place depuis janvier 2018.La décision d’exécution 2015/789/UE modifiée précise les dispositions visant à empêcher d’autres introductions de la bactérie Xylella fastidiosa ainsi que sa propagation dans l’UE. Conformément à l'article 9.1 de cette décision, les mouvements de végétaux spécifiés (la liste des espèces spécifiées est précisée en annexe I de la décision d’exécution 2015/789/UE) en dehors des zones délimitées (la définition d’une zone délimitée est précisée à l’article 4 de la décision d’exécution 2015/789/UE), sont interdits. Par dérogation, l’article 9.2 définit des conditions permettant à l'autorité compétente d’autoriser un opérateur à déplacer des végétaux spécifiés hors de zones délimitées. Parmi ces dispositions1, l’obligation de maintenir sous protection matérielle (en conditions « insect-proof » permanentes) le site de production du végétal spécifié pendant toute la durée de culture pose des difficultés de mise en œuvre. De ce fait, aucune dérogation n’a été délivrée, à ce jour, en France. Cela se traduit notamment par des pertes de marchés et des baisses du chiffre d'affaires chez les professionnels concernés pouvant aller jusqu'à 50 %.

Abstract

International audience; Germplasm from perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) natural populations is useful for breeding because of its adaptation to a wide range of climates. Climate-adaptive genes can be detected from associations between genotype, phenotype and climate but an integrated framework for the analysis of these three sources of information is lacking. We used two approaches to identify adaptive loci in perennial ryegrass and their effect on phenotypic traits. First, we combined Genome-Environment Association (GEA) and GWAS analyses. Then, we implemented a new test based on a Canonical Correlation Analysis (CANCOR) to detect adaptive loci. Furthermore, we improved the previous perennial ryegrass gene set by de novo gene prediction and functional annotation of 39,967 genes. GEA-GWAS revealed eight outlier loci associated with both environmental variables and phenotypic traits. CANCOR retrieved 633 outlier loci associated with two climatic gradients, characterized by cold-dry winter versus mild-wet winter and long rainy season versus long summer, and pointed out traits putatively conferring adaptation at the extremes of these gradients. Our CANCOR test also revealed the presence of both polygenic and oligogenic climatic adaptations. Our gene annotation revealed that 374 of the CANCOR outlier loci were positioned within or close to a gene. Co-association networks of outlier loci revealed a potential utility of CANCOR for investigating the interaction of genes involved in polygenic adaptations. The CANCOR test provides an integrated framework to analyse adaptive genomic diversity and phenotypic responses to environmental selection pressures that could be used to facilitate the adaptation of plant species to climate change.

Abstract

Aims Little is yet known about the component traits that control the deployment of root architecture in most grassland species. The aim of this study was to compare patterns of root growth in contrasting forage legumes and to analyse their dependency to shoot development. Methods The parameters of a dynamic simulation model were identified for seven contrasting species in a series of greenhouse experiments in order to characterize root elongation, root branching and taproot growth. The model allowed us to explore the interactions between root development and whole plant growth. Results Most of the root morphogenetic parameters studied displayed significant inter-specific variability. Several traits appeared to be correlated, indicating a close association between extreme root tip diameters, the branching ability of roots and their maximal elongation rate. The species differed along two PCA axes which accounted respectively for the branching ability of fine roots and taproot development. Quite remarkably, the group of species identified for root development did not coincide with those previously identified for shoots, suggesting a degree of independence between the morphogenetic traits that control shoot and root architecture. However, both plant parts remained tightly linked through the trophic relationship represented by root biomass allocation. Conclusions Our results suggest that the concomitant analysis of root and shoot development is necessary to properly decipher rooting strategies in forage legumes.

Abstract

International audience; Functional–structural plant models are increasingly being used to analyse relationships between plant functioning and the topological and spatial organisation of their modular structure. In this study, the performance of an individualbased model accounting for the the architecture and population dynamics of forage legumes in multi-species grasslands was assessed. Morphogenetic shoot and root parameters were calibrated for seven widely used species. Other model parameters concerning C and N metabolism were obtained from the literature. The model was evaluated using a series of independent experiments combining the seven species in binary mixtures that were subject to regular defoliation. For all the species, the model could accurately simulate phytomer demography, leaf area dynamics, and root growth under conditions of weak competition. In addition, the plastic changes induced by competition for light and N in terms of plant development, leaf area, N uptake, and total plant biomass were correctly predicted. The different species displayed contrasting sensitivities to defoliation, and the model was able to predict the superior ability of creeping species to sustain regular defoliation. As a result of competition and management, the balance between species changed over time and was strongly dependent on the pair of species used. The model proved able to capture these differences in community dynamics. Overall, the results demonstrate that integrating the individual components of population dynamics in a process-based model can provide good predictive capacity regarding mixtures of cultivated species.

Abstract

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) occurring in immune-related genes have been associated with risk or protection for development of dengue, depending on ethnicity. Here, we genotyped seven SNPs located in immune response-related genes to identify their association with severe forms of dengue in patients from an endemic region in Mexico. One hundred and thirty-eight patients with dengue fever (DF), thirty-one dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients, as well as 304 healthy donors were genotyped by using a TaqMan-based approach. SNP analysis, including rs1800629 (TNF), rs4804803 (CD209), rs2780831 (JAK1), rs1801274 (FCGR2A), rs231775 (CTLA4), rs12979860, and rs8099917 (IFNL3), was performed. The rs1800629 A-allele in the TNF gene was associated with an increased risk of DHF (OR = 3.4, CI = 1.235-9.284 p = 0.0212) whereas SNPs rs4804803, rs2780831, rs1801274, rs231775, rs12979860, and rs8099917 showed no association in this cohort. These results show that allelic variations in TNF can play an important role in the development of DHF. However, the lack of association between all remaining SNPs and DHF suggests that the genetic background might directly modify the role of these immune-related molecules, leading to the milder illness often observed in a Mexican population.

The article titled "Frequency of the F508del Mutation in the CFTR Gene Associated with Cystic Fibrosis in Individuals from the Quindío Department, March to October 2020" analyzes the prevalence of the F508del mutation in the Quindío region, Colombia. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects the airways, pancreas, and sweat glands. The study aims to determine the frequency of this mutation in individuals from Armenia, Quindío, during the period from March to October 2020. The results showed that none of the participants had the F508del mutation, indicating that the frequency of the mutation in the studied population is zero. The article highlights the importance of early diagnosis of cystic fibrosis and the search for effective molecular tests to improve neonatal screening and therapeutic options. Abstract

OBJECTIVE Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are the two clinical forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Diverse studies have shown the association of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in molecules of the immune system and the occurrence of IBD. Here, several SNPs of the immune system with controversial results for their association with UC and CD were evaluated in a Mexican population. METHODS SNPs rs1800896, rs3024505 (IL-10); rs11209026 (IL23R); rs2066844, rs2066845 (NOD-2), and rs2241880 (ATG16L1) were assessed in 93 patients with IBD and 200 healthy controls by hybridization probes and quantitative PCR. RESULTS The AG genotype for rs1800896 was associated with an increased risk for both UC and CD (P = 0.005 and P = 0.026, respectively); whereas the AA genotype presents a negative association (P = 0.011 for UC, and 0.0038 for CD). For this SNP, G allele was associated with risk of UC (P = 0-043) but not for CD. For the rs3024505 in IL-10, T allele was associated with UC (P = 0.011). Moreover, this allele was associated with early onset of UC (P = 0.033) and with the use of steroid treatment (P = 0.019). No significant differences for NOD2 (rs2066844T and rs2066845C), IL23R (rs11209026), and ATG16L1 (rs22411880) were found between cases and controls and the homozygous TT genotype for rs2066844 and CC for rs2066845 were not observed. CONCLUSION Our results show both genotypic and phenotypic associations of IL-10 SNPs with IBD but not with the other immune-related SNPs studied in this Mexican cohort.

Abstract

Introduction: The US-Mexico region is at high risk of elevated tuberculosis (TB) incidence due to mobility and migration. Knowledge of how socio-demographic factors varies geographically, provides clues to understanding the determinants of tuberculosis and may provide guidance for regional prevention and control strategies to improve public health in Mexico. The aim of the present study was to describe the epidemiologic characteristics and spatial patterns of the incidence of tuberculosis in Tonala, Jalisco (Mexico) from 2013-2015. Methodology: The Surveillance System Database from the Health Department, complemented by information from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, was used to obtain data for a spatial-temporal analysis of TB cases. For the geographical analysis map creation and geoinformation storing, ArcGIS software was used. Results: This study sought to characterize problem areas and jurisdictional locations of TB via a spatial approach based on analyses of case distributions and individual patient variables. The study found that tuberculosis cases were dispersed throughout Tonala County and were mainly concentrated on the Guadalajara city border. The TB cases were mainly individuals between 31 and 45 years old. Most of the cases reported during the observation period were male patients, and most cases primarily had lung involvement; however, there were quite a few cases with lymph node and intestinal disease. Conclusion: Our findings show that TB cases are essentially located in areas close to the city of Guadalajara and that most TB cases were pulmonary cases spread throughout the whole jurisdiction.

Abstract

International audience; Aim: Grasslands have been pivotal in the development of herbivore breeding since the Neolithic and still represent the most widespread agricultural land use across Europe. However, it remains unclear whether the current large‐scale genetic variation of plant species found in natural grasslands of Europe is the result of human activities or natural processes. Location: Europe. Taxon: Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass). Methods: We reconstructed the phylogeographic history of L. perenne, a dominant grassland species, using 481 natural populations, including 11 populations of closely related taxa. We combined Genotyping‐by‐Sequencing (GBS) and pool‐Sequencing (pool‐Seq) to obtain high‐quality allele frequency calls of ~500 k SNP loci. We performed genetic structure analyses and demographic reconstructions based on the site frequency spectrum (SFS). We additionally used the same genotyping protocol to assess the genomic diversity of a set of 32 cultivars representative of the L. perenne cultivars widely used for forage purposes. Results: Expansion across Europe took place during the Würm glaciation (12–110 kya), a cooling period that decreased the dominance of trees in favour of grasses. Splits and admixtures in L. perenne fit historical climate changes in the Mediterranean basin. The development of agriculture in Europe (7–3.5 kya), that caused an increase in the abundance of grasslands, did not have an effect on the demographic patterns of L. perenne. We found that most modern cultivars are closely related to natural diversity from north-western Europe. Thus, modern cultivars do not represent the wide genetic variation found in natural populations. Main conclusions: Demographic events in L. perenne can be explained by the changing climatic conditions during the Pleistocene. Natural populations maintain a wide genomic variability at continental scale that has been minimally exploited by recent breeding activities. This variability constitutes valuable standing genetic variation for future adaptation of grasslands to climate change, safeguarding the agricultural services they provide.

Abstract

Temperature is one of the major factors controlling plant development, in particular seed germination. Alfalfa is a perennial pasture legume that holds an important place in cultivated grasslands. Breeding alfalfa cultivars adapted to new ranges of temperature could be necessary, requiring knowledge of the variability in response to temperature among different accessions. Six accessions of Medicago sativa subsp. sativa and one wild population of M. sativa subsp. falcata were evaluated for their germination temperature response. Seeds were tested for germination in the dark at eight constant temperatures, from 5 to 40°C. Significant differences (P < 0.01) were found. The optimum temperature for germination ranged between 11.7 and 21.1°C, whereas two varieties, ‘Demnate’ and ‘Luzelle’ had a very wide range of temperatures favouring maximum germination. The findings of this study suggest that the germination of alfalfa was little affected by low temperature (5°C) whereas germination at 40°C was lower and showed high variability. Our results revealed variability in the response to temperature for germination of M. sativa that gives room for breeding new varieties adapted to future environmental conditions induced by the global climate change.

Abstract

Growing mixtures of annual arable crop species or genotypes is a promising way to improve crop production without increasing agricultural inputs. To design optimal crop mixtures, choices of species, genotypes, sowing proportion, plant arrangement, and sowing date need to be made but field experiments alone are not sufficient to explore such a large range of factors. Crop modeling allows to study, understand and ultimately design cropping systems and is an established method for sole crops. Recently, modeling started to be applied to annual crop mixtures as well. Here, we review to what extent crop simulation models and individual-based models are suitable to capture and predict the specificities of annual crop mixtures. We argued that: 1) The crop mixture spatio-temporal heterogeneity (influencing the occurrence of ecological processes) determines the choice of the modeling approach (plant or crop centered). 2) Only few crop models (adapted from sole crop models) and individual-based models currently exist to simulate annual crop mixtures. 3) Crop models are mainly used to address issues related to crop mixtures management and to the integration of crop mixtures into larger scales such as the rotation, whereas individual-based models are mainly used to identify plant traits involved in crop mixture performance and to quantify the relative contribution of the different ecological processes (niche complementarity, facilitation, competition, plasticity) to crop mixture functioning. This review highlights that modeling of annual crop mixtures is in its infancy and gives to model users some important keys to choose the model based on the questions they want to answer, with awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of each of the modeling approaches., Comment: 42 pages, 5 figures
