- Abstract
The rise in scope and significance of international migration is currently one of the greatest issues in many developed countries, where immigrants have moved to find better employment opportunities, improved living standards, and safer political conditions. The increased numbers of immigrants across the globe has led to heated debates about assimilation and public discussion on immigration. Therefore, international migration substantially affects both sending and receiving societies, and is followed by unprecedented social and economic challenges.

The paper concerns the study of electroless nickel coating of carbon microfibres (CFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in order to be utilised as reinforcing phase for composites with metal and polymer matrix. The efficiency of the developed alkaline solution based on two salts -- nickel sulphate (NiSO4) and nickel chloride (NiCl2) for nickel alloy coating (Ni--P) onto the CFs and CNTs was confirmed. The electroless Ni--P coating of CNTs was performed at room temperature under conditions of ultrasonic bath treatment, which assist avoiding excessive agglomeration during metallisation. - Abstract
The dominant design literature has identified several factors and forces that favour the emergence of a dominant design. In other occasions, however, multiple designs continue to compete with each other without having a single product design that reaches market dominance. Various scholars used these occasions to explore which circumstances and factors facilitate multiple designs to co-exist. However, the factors and circumstances that were identified lacked the dimension of time, making them static and difficult to apply in on-going battles. In this study, a dynamic model is built using the literature to identify factors that favour multiple designs taking into account the different phases of the dominant design emergence process. It appears that these factors differ profoundly in relevance as well as strength throughout the emergence process. The model that has been developed is particularly useful for understanding dominant design battles that are on-going or subject to rapid change.

Executive functions ,Cognitive deficits ,High Risk ,Schizophrenia ,Working Memory - Abstract
Background. Studies of individuals at high genetic risk (HR) of schizophrenia have shown subtle deficits in the domains of executive functions. However, executive abilities also depend on working memory, which is one of the most prominent impairments associated with vulnerability to schizophrenia. The present study examines whether working memory deficits could account for impairments usually attributed to executive dysfunctions. Methods. A total of 100 HR and 27 control participants were assessed on working memory and executive tasks. Linear regressions were applied to compare neuropsychological performance between the two groups and to examine the contribution of working memory to performance on those executive tasks where significant difference was evident. Results. HR individuals had significantly reduced working memory capacity and manipulation. Impairments were also found in processing speed, set-shifting and planning abilities. After accounting for the contribution of working memory, the HR group did not significantly differ from controls on cognitive flexibility and planning, however the group differences on processing speed and set-shifting remained significant. Conclusion. Cognitive flexibility and planning processing speed impairments found in HR could be attributed to deficits in working memory processing rather than deficits in pure executive domains. Perceptual processing speed and set-shifting may represent affective endophenotypes characterising genetic predisposition to schizophrenia, independent from working memory impairments.

- Abstract
The Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM; Phinney, 1992) is a widely used instrument to quantify the way people think, feel, and behave regarding their ethnic origin. This instrument is commonly used to compare groups of people from different ethnic and/or cultural backgrounds. However, in order for these comparisons to be accurate, measurement invariance between groups needs to be tested and this is what has been done in the current study. First, confirmatory factor analyses were conducted separately for data sets with Bulgarian, Dutch, and Greek adolescents. Second, configural and scalar invariance were tested. Finally, comparisons between Bulgarian, Dutch, and Greek adolescents were made on their scores on MEIM. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

- Abstract
This article investigated the dimensionality, measurement invariance, and cross-cultural variations of social desirability. A total of 3,471 university students from 20 countries completed an adapted version of the Marlowe–Crowne scale. A two-dimensional structure was revealed in the pooled sample, distinguishing enhancement (endorsement of positive self-description) and denial (rejection of negative self-description). The factor structure was supported in most countries; medium-sized item bias was found in two denial items. In a multilevel analysis, we found that (a) there was more cross-cultural variation in denial than enhancement; (b) females tended to score higher on enhancement whereas males tended to score higher on denial; (c) the Human Development Index, an indicator of country socioeconomic development, was the best (negative) predictor of denial; and (d) both enhancement and denial seemed to be associated with country-level values and personality pertinent to “fitting in.” We conclude that social desirability has a positive and a negative impression management dimension that are meaningfully associated with country-level characteristics, and we argue that social desirability is better interpreted as culturally regulated response amplification.

The paper concerns the study of mechanical and tribological characteristics of hardfaced layers of dispersive reinforced material in pure aluminium metal matrix. The wear resistant coatings were deposited by shielded gas metal-arc welding applying either metal inert gas (MIG) or tungsten inert gas (TIG), with standard wire filler onto the buffer layer -- a baked resistant film containing metalised and flux coated micro/nano SiC particles. The hardfaced layers were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX). Nanoindentation and wear resistance tests were carried out. - Abstract
The present work aims at a detailed study and explanation of the pollution transport in the air basin over south-western Bulgaria and northern Greece and assessment of the air pollution exchange between Bulgaria and Greece. Some well-known specific climatic air pollution effects were studied and explained. Calculations were made of the SO2 pollution of the Balkan Peninsula from both Greek and Bulgarian sources for 1995, and the country-to-country pollution budget diagrams were built. Days with extreme mean concentration for Bulgaria and northern Greece were picked out, and some further specification of the contribution of the different sources in both the countries to these cases of extreme pollution was made. Some preliminary studies of possible mesoscale effects on the pollution exchange between Bulgaria and northern Greece were carried out. A three-layer pollution transport model with a more complex chemistry block was introduced, and some preliminary simulations of the transport of sulfur and nitrogen compounds were performed.

- Abstract
The Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium is a collaborative network of researchers working together on a range of large-scale studies that integrate data from 70 institutions worldwide. Organized into Working Groups that tackle questions in neuroscience, genetics, and medicine, ENIGMA studies have analyzed neuroimaging data from over 12,826 subjects. In addition, data from 12,171 individuals were provided by the CHARGE consortium for replication of findings, in a total of 24,997 subjects. By meta-analyzing results from many sites, ENIGMA has detected factors that affect the brain that no individual site could detect on its own, and that require larger numbers of subjects than any individual neuroimaging study has currently collected. ENIGMA's first project was a genome-wide association study identifying common variants in the genome associated with hippocampal volume or intracranial volume. Continuing work is exploring genetic associations with subcortical volumes (ENIGMA2) and white matter microstructure (ENIGMA-DTI). Working groups also focus on understanding how schizophrenia, bipolar illness, major depression and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affect the brain. We review the current progress of the ENIGMA Consortium, along with challenges and unexpected discoveries made on the way.

- Abstract
A consensus meeting was convened by the Initiative on Methods, Measurement, and Pain Assessment in Clinical Trials (IMMPACT) to provide recommendations for interpreting clinical importance of treatment outcomes in clinical trials of the efficacy and effectiveness of chronic pain treatments. A group of 40 participants from universities, governmental agencies, a patient self-help organization, and the pharmaceutical industry considered methodologic issues and research results relevant to determining the clinical importance of changes in the specific outcome measures previously recommended by IMMPACT for 4 core chronic pain outcome domains: (1) Pain intensity, assessed by a 0 to 10 numerical rating scale; (2) physical functioning, assessed by the Multidimensional Pain Inventory and Brief Pain Inventory interference scales; (3) emotional functioning, assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory and Profile of Mood States; and (4) participant ratings of overall improvement, assessed by the Patient Global Impression of Change scale. It is recommended that 2 or more different methods be used to evaluate the clinical importance of improvement or worsening for chronic pain clinical trial outcome measures. Provisional benchmarks for identifying clinically important changes in specific outcome measures that can be used for outcome studies of treatments for chronic pain are proposed. PERSPECTIVE: Systematically collecting and reporting the recommended information needed to evaluate the clinical importance of treatment outcomes of chronic pain clinical trials will allow additional validation of proposed benchmarks and provide more meaningful comparisons of chronic pain treatments Udgivelsesdato: 2008/2

Research on intersectionality of marginalized youth is generally situated in the assumption that non-normative identity leads to pathology and victimization. Further, most research to date has studied marginalized youth using a traditional nuclear family paradigm. In this paper we discuss how intersectionality addresses the combination of strengths and challenges of living with stigmatizing identities and family processes, towards developing successful youth adjustment. We apply the three-step intersectionality approach to study findings among a group of racial/ethnic minority and sexual minority identified youth and discuss the particular role of familism and extended kinship support beliefs that are unique to these youth as a promoter of successful adjustment. The current study examined measurement invariance of the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS; Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985) across three immigrant groups, namely, immigrants from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) in Israel, Turkish-Bulgarians, and Turkish-Germans. The results demonstrate measurement invariance of the SWLS across groups. The findings that Turkish-Bulgarian and FSU immigrants in Israel scored significantly lower on the SWLS compared to Turkish-Germans can be explained by assimilative policies in Israel and Bulgaria. In conclusion, our results suggest the SWLS is feasible for cross-cultural comparisons of immigrants of various age groups. Future investigation of measurement invariance over time is needed to use the SWLS in a developmental perspective.
