Centella asiatica (Indian pennywort) is a green leafy vegetable containing centelloside' (triterpenoid), a key phytochemical component in traditional medicine. Being a glycophytic species, they exhibit decline in growth performance and yield traits when subjected to water-deficit (WD) conditions. Glycine betaine (GB) is a low molecular-weight organic metabolite that plays a crucial role in abiotic stress conditions in higher plants. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of GB in alleviating water-deficit stress (in terms of morphological and physiological responses) in two different genotypes of Indian pennywort, "Nakhon Pathom" (NP; high centelloside-yielding genotype) and "Pathum Thani" (PT; low centelloside-yielding genotype). The genotypes of Indian pennywort were propagated by stolon cutting and transplanted into plastic bags containing 2 kg of garden soil. At the flower-initiation stage (30 days after transplantation), uniform plant material was treated exogenously with 0 (control), 25, and 50 mM GB at 100 mL per plant (one-time foliar spray) and then divided into two groups, 1) well watered (WW; irrigated daily with 400 mL fresh water; 98% field capacity) and 2) water deficit (WD; withheld water for 14 days; 72% field capacity). Foliar application of GB (25 mM) significantly improved leaf osmotic potential in NP under WD conditions via osmotic adjustment by free proline and fructose. Differences in leaf temperature (Tleaf) between WD and WW in NP were maximized (+ 1.93 °C) and the gap of Tleaf was reduced in the case of 25–50 mM GB application. Similarly, crop water stress index (CWSI) in NP and PT plants under WD condition was significantly increased by 1.95- and 1.86-fold over the control, respectively; however, it was significantly decreased by exogenous GB application. Increasing Tleaf and CWSI in drought-stressed plants was closely related to stomatal closure, leading to reduced gas exchange parameters, i.e., stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), and consequently decreased plant biomass and total centelloside yield. Overall physiological, morphological, and secondary metabolite traits were enhanced in NP under WD conditions using 25 mM GB exogenous application compared with the control. The study highlights the significance of GB in Indian pennywort production under limited water irrigation (water deficit) with higher vegetable yield and phytochemical stabilization. Using either brackish or saline water is one of the most critical and serious problem in cultivation of ornamental shrubs in Mediterranean areas. So, an investigation was performed during 2021 and 2022 seasons to reveal the tolerance of Brazilian cherry (Eugenia uniflora L.) transplants to salinity of irrigation water. The applied doses of natural Siwa halite for water salinization were 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 g L-1 under the Egyptian climatic conditions. The results indicated that mean values of survival rate were gradually decreased by increasing the salinity level to be 58.33 and 70.0 % in the seasons, respectively after applying 10.0 g L-1. Similarly, were the mean values of vegetative and root growth parameters, which linearly decreased with increasing applied salinity dose up to 10.0 g L-1, with exception for 2.0 and 4.0 g L-1 ones which significantly improved values of most growth traits in most cases of both seasons. Also, salinized water at 6.0 g L-1 recorded better results compared to the control in some characters either in the first or in the second season. The same trend was observed for the results of leaf chemical composition, with the exception of K, Na, Cl and proline contents, which recorded a progressive increase with the gradual increase in applied salinity level ranged from 2 to 3 folds comparing with the control. The salt resistance index percentages were also improved by both 2.0 and 4.0 g L-1 saline water treatments, but significantly declined afterwards to reach 81.5 and 73.7 % by 10.0 g L-1, showing the high ability of such plant to cope with high salt stress. Accordingly, under conditions of fresh water rarity, it could be recommended irrigation of Brazilian cherry transplants using saline water up to 6.0 g L-1 dose to keep quality and decorative value of such plant. The purpose of this study was to explore the carbon and nitrogen metabolism mechanisms of sand-cultivated cucumbers under different deficit irrigation–nitrogen management strategies and provide a theoretical basis for their greenhouse management. This study set up two factors, the deficit irrigation level and the nitrogen application rate, and conducted an experiment on deficit irrigation–nitrogen coupling of sand-cultivated cucumbers using a quadratic saturation D–optimal design. Seven treatments were set up in the experiment, to measure the soluble sugar and protein contents, as well as the activity of key enzymes for carbon and nitrogen metabolism at five different growth stages. The results indicate that the 80% irrigation with 623 kg N hm−2 (IN4) treatment significantly improved the soluble sugar, protein, and actual leaf nitrogen contents of cucumber at the five different growth stages and, as a result, achieved higher sucrose synthase (SS) and sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) activities in the cucumber leaves. Furthermore, such improvements were due to the reduction in oxidative damage of sand–cultivated cucumber at various growth stages. The IN4 and 89% irrigation with 1250 kg N hm−2 (IN5) treatments significantly increased the activities of RuBisCO, catalase (CAT), peroxidise (POD), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) at various growth stages of sand-cultivated cucumber. The higher activities of glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), nitrate reductase (NR), glutamine synthase (GS), acid invertase enzyme (AIE), neutral invertase enzyme (NIE), and better antioxidative enzyme activities were recorded under the IN4 treatments at various growth stages, which effectively improve (69.6%) cucumber yield. The soil properties, carbon and nitrogen metabolism, and antioxidant metabolism were positively correlated with sand-cultivated cucumber yield in a greenhouse. We concluded that the IN4 treatment was the better deficit irrigation–nitrogen management strategy because it considerably improves carbon and nitrogen metabolism, antioxidant enzyme activities, and sand–cultivated cucumber yield in a greenhouse. This field experiment aimed to evaluate the impact of two distinct levels of irrigation, specifically drip irrigation, on a pear orchard to conserve water without compromising production. Kosovo boasts conducive conditions for tree cultivation; however, water scarcity, particularly during the vegetation period, necessitates supplementary irrigation. The study was carried out in the Dukagjini plain on a 10-hectare pear orchard, using a nested experimental design.. Per two levels of irrigation, for 13 rows with tress were used with 100% of evapotranspiration as control and 13 rows with 50% of deficit irrigation. One row were length 90 m and width 40 cm, in total area where applied irrigation were 936 m². Using ANOVA, we detected significant fluctuations in total yield, the number of fruits, and fruit weight. With this technology in 100% irrigation have been achieved a total 7497 kg/900 trees or an average of 8.33 kg/tree while in 50% irrigation have been achieved 4590 kg/900 trees or 5.10 kg/tree. In classification of fruits 85.41% (100% irrigation) were extra class while 92.30% in 50% of irrigation. Our results confirmed that drip irrigation combined with a moderate water stress increase all productive parameters especiallity in total yield, too with significant water saving. Strawberry plants have shallow roots and large leaves, which are highly sensitive to variations in water levels. To explore the physicochemical and molecular mechanisms of strawberry response to water stress, and provide new ideas for strawberry scientific irrigation, we measured the transpiration rate, fresh weight, biomass gain, and other indicators of potted "Zhangji" strawberry plants under drought and waterlogging treatments using a Plantarray system. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses of strawberry leaves following mild drought, moderate drought, severe drought, and rehydration treatments were performed to identify key genes and metabolites involved in the response to drought stress. Below a certain threshold, the transpiration rate of strawberry plants was significantly lower after the deficit irrigation treatment than the conventional water treatment. Transcriptome analysis revealed that genes involved in oxidoreductase activity and in sulfur and nitrogen metabolism were up-regulated, as well as starch and sucrose. Strawberry plants secrete various endogenous growth hormones to maintain their normal growth under drought stress. The syntheses of salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) were up-regulated in the mild and moderate drought treatments. However, the syntheses of 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid (ACC) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) were down-regulated in severe drought treatment and up-regulated in rehydration after severe drought treatment. This study evaluated the effect of salicylic acid (SA) application on yield, fruit quality, and post-harvest storage in Prunus avium subjected to deficit irrigation (DI). A field experiment with six-year-old P. avium cv. Lapins was performed under two water treatments: irrigation at 100% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) [full irrigation (FI)] and irrigation at 60% ETc from the second fruit phase to harvest time (DI). A single 0.5 mM SA was applied to both water treatments at fruit color change. At harvest time, fruits were collected to determine yield, fruit quality, and quality during post-harvest storage (0, 10, 20, and 30 days). The DI reduced fruit yield (11%), fruit weight (8%), and caliber (6%) and increased firmness (7%) and total soluble solids (TSS) (5%) in P. avium compared with FI plants at harvest time. Our study showed that SA application recovered fruit yield (9%), fruit weight (5%), and caliber (4%), improving TSS in DI plants at day 0. Interestingly, SA application significantly reduced P. avium fruit cracking (78% in FI and 82% in DI). Fruit weight was reduced in all treatments, mainly decreasing by 14% in FI and 13% in DI plants at day 30 of post-harvest storage. Fruit weight did not change during post-harvest storage with SA, except on day 30, where a slight reduction was observed. TSS showed no significant differences during post-harvest storage for all treatments. Therefore, SA could be an interesting tool to mitigate the impact of DI on the yield and fruit quality of P. avium and to reduce fruit cracking and prolong fruit quality during post-harvest storage. Deficit irrigation (DI) strategies are becoming increasingly common in areas where water resources are limited. The application of moderate levels of DI can result in water savings with a small reduction in yield but with a higher quality of the product. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of applying a certain level of water deficit (40% water holding capacity) on the yield and quality of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), specifically the cultivar 'Triunfo-70'. Bioactive compounds were investigated by applying an LC-MS-based untargeted metabolomics approach as an analytical tool for identifying novel markers associated with a water deficit in beans. The results showed that beans harvested 30 days after DI application experienced water stress, as indicated by the decrease in the leaf water potential and gas exchange values (stomatal conductance and photosynthesis). In addition, the number of pods per plant was significantly reduced by the DI treatment. The water deficit induced significant alterations in various bioactive compounds (including organic acids, polyphenols, hydroxybenzoic acids, lipids, and phospholipids) when compared to the control treatment. Additionally, twelve new biomarkers were identified in this study for the first time in the common bean under DI. These findings suggested that DI acted as an elicitor, increasing phenylpropanoid metabolism, while concurrently reducing the production of compounds associated with fatty acid metabolism. Additionally, new metabolites were tentatively identified in common beans. This study represents the successful application of the untargeted metabolomics approach to finding bioactive secondary metabolites in beans under different irrigation conditions. Introduction: Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most important legumes in the world (Keifer, 2018). After India, Australia, and Pakistan, Iran has taken the fourth rank in terms of chickpea cultivation area, and the decrease in rainfall and especially the plant's exposure to heat and drought stress at the end of the season is the reason for the decrease in crop yield (SabaghPour et al., 2010; FAO, 2018). In general, drought stress and its relationship with the reduction of yield and its components in crops plants can be primarily attributed to the closing of stomata in response to low soil water content, during which the entry of carbon dioxide into the leaf is reduced, and as a result, it causes a reduction in photosynthesis. Materials and methods: In order to investigate the effect of irrigation regimes on the yield and yield components of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), an experiment was conducted at the research farm of Shahed University during 2021-2022 as a split plot design in the form of random complete blocks. The first factor is irrigation systems at three levels: 1) supplementary irrigation (Irrigation at two sowing times and before flowering based on 20% available soil water, 2) complete or control irrigation (irrigation based on 20% available soil water), 3) Low irrigation regime (irrigation based on 40% available soil water) is the second factor of autumn (November 15) and spring (March 15) sowing dates. Irrigation was carried out in the form of streams and stacks, and the ends of the plots were completely closed to prevent water from escaping. Data analysis and calculations related to simple Pearson correlation coefficients between traits were performed with SAS (ver 9.4) and SPSS (ver 23) software, respectively, and the average of treatments was compared by LSD test at a statistical level of 5%. The graphs were drawn using Excel software. Results and discussion: The results of the variance analysis of the interaction between irrigation regime and planting date showed that there is a significant difference between the traits of number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, plant height, number of seeds per plant, harvest index, biological yield and seed yield. The results of comparing the averages also showed the highest number of branches per plant (9.83), the number of pods per plant (30.5), plant height (51.08) cm, and the number of seeds per plant (26.66). The harvest index was 0.48 percent, the biological yield was 4670 kg ha-1, and the seed yield was 2384.17 kg ha-1 for the autumn planting date treatment under the autumn irrigation regime (irrigation based on draining 20% of crop capacity moisture). The highest correlations with grain yield were obtained by traits: plant height (r = 0.986**), number of branches per plant (r = 0.966**), harvest index (r = 0.962**), number of seeds per plant (r = 0.961*), biological yield (r = 0.956**), hundred seed weight (r = 0.933**) and number of empty pods per plant (r = 0.880*). Conclusion In general, the results of this experiment indicate that the Low irrigation regime is more efficient than Supplementary irrigation in all traits after the control irrigation regime in autumn sowing. Therefore, the Low irrigation regime is suggested as a low irrigation regime suitable for the conditions of the tested region for the sowing of chickpeas in autumn, and in addition, other autumn sowing dates of this variety should be studied. Saffron (Crocus sativus L.), a bulbous and perennial plant, is highly influenced by environmental factors such as light, moisture, temperature, and nutrition, which can significantly affect its growth and development. To investigate the effects of different biofertilizers and irrigation regimes on the characteristics of saffron corms and flowers, an experiment was conducted over two agricultural years (2021-2022 and 2022-2023) in the agricultural lands of Ziar city, a suburb of Isfahan. This experiment was carried out as split plots based on randomized complete block design with three replications. The main factor was deficit irrigation at three levels (50%, 75%, and 100% of the crop water requirement), and the sub-factors included eight levels: nitrogen-fixing free-living bacteria (B-N), potassiumsolubilizing bacteria (B-K), phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (B-P), their combination, and a control with no fertilizer. The results indicated that the highest number of corms (415 m-2), corm weight (2360 g. m-2), corm without scales belonged weight (2304 g. m-2), number of corms weighing 0-4 grams (244 m-2), number of corms weighing 4-8 grams (135 m-2), number of corms weighing 8-12 grams (55.3 m-2), number of corms weighing over 12 grams (64.2 m-2), dry stigma weight (0.492 g. m-2), and dry style weight (0.122 g. m-2) were obtained from the treatment with 100% water requirement and NPK biofertilizer combination. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) requires a long growing period for fruit and fiber maturation, making it vulnerable to insect pests, thus affecting the seed cotton yield and fiber quality. Cotton-feeding thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) are one of the major insects impacting cotton yield throughout the U.S. cotton belt and worldwide. A two-year field research conducted at Texas A&M AgriLife Research farm in west Texas, USA quantified the interactive effect of three cover crops [wheat (Triticum aestivum), rye (Secale cereale), and no cover] and three irrigation regimes [rainfed, deficit irrigation (30%) and full irrigation] on thrips population dynamics across the phenologically susceptible stages of upland cotton and resulting impact on plant growth and yield parameters. Temporal densities of thrips, feeding injury from thrips, cotton growth and reproductive profiles, yield, and fiber quality varied with cover crops and irrigation levels. Thrips densities were conspicuously low due to harsh weather conditions, but the densities decreased with an increase in plant age. Terminated rye and wheat cover versus conventional-tilled, no-cover treatments showed marginal effects on thrips colonization and population dynamics. Similarly, full irrigation treatment supported higher thrips densities compared to rainfed and deficit irrigation treatments. Immature thrips densities increased through the successive sampling periods, indicating increased thrips reproduction following the initial colonization. Thrips feeding injury was significantly greater in no-cover plots in the early seedling stage, but the effect was insignificant across all cover crop treatments in subsequent sampling dates. The results of this study demonstrated increased seedling vigor, plant height, and flower densities in terminated cover crop plots across all irrigation regimes compared to that in no-cover plots. However, the cover crop x irrigation interaction significantly impacted the cotton lint yield, with increased lint yield on cover crop treatments. This study clearly demonstrates the value of cover crops in semi-arid agricultural production systems that are characterized by low rainfall, reduced irrigation capacity, and wind erosion of topsoil. Soybean is a vital oil crop in Ethiopia to attract foreign income. In southwest Ethiopia's irrigated conditions, phosphorus fertilization and water stress limits soybean yield. A three-year field experiment (2018/19–2020/21) assessed the impact of deficit irrigation (DI) and phosphorus rate (P rate) on crop water productivity (WPc), agronomic efficiency of phosphorus (AEP) and soybean yields. It included two DI levels and one control treatment (I50 = 50 % ETc, I75 = 75 % ETc, and I100 = 100 % ETc) in the main plot and five P rates (P0 = 0, P10 = 10, P20 = 20, P30 = 30, and P40 = 40 kg ha−1 P) in the subplot, arranged in a randomized split plot design with three replicates. P rates were optimized for each DI level using a quadratic polynomial regression model, predicting maximum agronomic yield and economically optimal P rate based on yield and cultivation cost. The study's results demonstrated a highly significant difference in soybean yield, WPc, and AEP among various P treatments. Furthermore, the highest WPc (0.63 kg m−3) and AEP (31.67 kg kg−1) were achieved with treatments with 30 kg ha−1 P and 10 kg ha−1 P. Among DI treatments, 75 % ETc reduced water usage by 25 % and increased WPc by 13.3 %. The application of 30 kg ha−1 P improved WPc and increased yield by 91 % and 90 %, respectively. The combined effect of I100×P30 significantly increased plant height (68.23 cm), dry matter (4.4 t ha−1), and yield (2965.49 kg ha−1) by 40.3 %, 104.3 %, and 215.2 %, respectively. The maximum WPc (0.83 kg m−3) and the lowest (0.30 kg m−3) were achieved at I50×P30 and I100×P0, respectively. The lowest AEP (9.36 kg ha−1) was obtained at I50×P40, while AEP (64.49 kg kg−1) significantly improved by 85 % at I100×P10. The maximum agronomic yields ranged from 1842.5 to 2895 kg ha⁻¹, with the corresponding combined treatments of I50×P26 to I100×P32. Economically optimal P rates ranged from 26 kg ha−1 (I50) to 31 kg ha−1 P (I100), giving net returns of $1666.1 to $3028.4 ha−1. Efficient management of DI and P can optimize irrigation, reduce P losses, and mitigate economic and environmental risks. Based on the result of this finding, applying 31 kg ha−1 of P under 100 % ETc and 28 kg ha−1 of P under 75 % ETc is recommended as the optimal P application strategy to achieve higher yield, WPc, AEP, and maximize economic returns in southwest Ethiopia. In addition, the breeder needs to develop soybean varieties that are more resistant to water stress and efficient in P uptake.

Maize is among the most important crops in Iran. Enhancing maize irrigation management is critical for alleviating the pressure on limited freshwater resources in Khorasan Razavi province. The main objective of this study was to develop a novel irrigation scheduling optimization framework (AquaCrop plug-in-PSO) for maize, based on in-season weather forecasts integrated with the AquaCrop plug-in model and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. During the growing season, weather forecasts combined with AquaCrop plug-in-PSO algorithm create optimal irrigation plans for different crop growth stages, maximizing crop water productivity (WPC). A two-year (2021–2022) maize field irrigation experiment was conducted in Mashhad, Iran, to collect all necessary data for calibration (2021 data) and validation (2022 data) of the AquaCrop model. Three irrigation cases were then simulated (i.e., full irrigation and deficit irrigation: 70 % and 90 % of full irrigation) to evaluate the performance of the AquaCrop plug-in-PSO approach against the typical irrigation management of local farmers, as well as ET-based and soil moisture-based irrigation scheduling methods. Additionally, AquaCrop plug-in-PSO was used to evaluate the algorithm’s performance with historical weather data. The simulation results showed that the AquaCrop Plug-in-PSO, when used with weather forecast data (AquaCrop plug-in-PSO dynamic approach), outperformed all other irrigation scheduling methods for both deficit and full irrigation cases, achieving the highest WPC, ranging from 2.21 to 3.12 kg m−3. Our simulation results demonstrate that the AquaCrop plug-in-PSO dynamic approach can be effectively used for efficient autonomous full and maize deficit irrigation scheduling in arid and semiarid regions.

Water scarcity in arid and semiarid areas highlights the importance of developing water-saving irrigation techniques. Soil extracellular enzyme activities (EEAs) and microbes are important for soil biochemical cycles and plant growth. However, little is understood about how soil EEAs, and microbial communities respond to water-saving irrigation systems and levels. Therefore, a field experiment was carried out over four consecutive wheat-maize seasons to explore the effects of surface irrigation (SI) and drip irrigation (DI) coupled with different irrigation levels (i.e. 65, 50, 35 and 20 mm/event, represents sufficient, mild deficit, moderate deficit and serious deficit irrigation, respectively) on the plant biomass, soil properties, soil EEAs, and bacterial community. The results revealed that mild deficit irrigation showed no significant impact on plant biomass, serious and moderate deficit irrigation significantly decreased crop biomass by 49.0 % and 26.6 %, respectively, compared with sufficient irrigation. However, the crop biomass of serious and moderate deficit irrigation under DI were 15.4 % and 17.4 % higher, respectively, than that under SI. Serious and moderate deficit irrigation significantly increased soil available K accumulation and soil urease activity, decreased bacterial richness, and shifted the bacterial community structure. No significant differences were found between mild deficit and sufficient irrigation. The relative abundances of Firmicutes, Gemmatimonadota, and Myxococcota significantly increased under serious deficit irrigation, while Acidobacteriota significantly decreased. Moderate deficit irrigation under DI did not shift bacterial community structure, while under SI did. Soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), available K, and plant biomass were the major factors influencing the bacterial community compositions. Serious deficit irrigation reduced the complexity and stability of the soil bacterial co-occurrence network. The network of DI had more significant interactions among bacteria than the SI. Therefore, DI coupled with moderate deficit irrigation is more beneficial to maintain crop yield and the stability of bacterial community structure than SI.

A two-year field experiment was conducted to integrate soil moisture stress with the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) for optimizing irrigation in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under varying irrigation regimes. The study took place at the Water Technology Centre (WTC-02) of ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, where the climate shows a blend of monsoon-influenced humid subtropical and semi-arid conditions. Using a randomized block design (RBD), five irrigation treatments were applied: full irrigation and deficit irrigation (DI) at 15 %, 30 %, 45 %, and 60 % levels. Canopy and ambient air temperature data, along with vapor pressure deficit (VPD), were recorded using a developed integrated sensing device to empirically determine the lower baseline equations and upper threshold for CWSI computation at pre-heading and post-heading stages. The slope (m), intercept (c) of the lower baseline equation, and upper threshold (UL) for pre-heading and post-heading were found: m: −1.94, c: −1.33, UL: 1.92°C and m: −1.30, c: −2.37, UL: 2.0°C, respectively. Results showed that increasing water deficit levels led to significant reductions in grain yield, biomass production, and harvest index. A strong negative correlation (R² = 0.95 and 0.93) between mean seasonal CWSI and yield attributes highlighted the utility of CWSI in yield prediction under varying irrigation regimes. It is recommended to schedule irrigation based on the CWSI approach when CWSI ≥0.35 for optimum wheat yields. Integrating CWSI with soil moisture stress provides valuable real-time insights into crop water status, enabling more precise and smart irrigation scheduling.

Ethiopia's dominant maize production relies on rain, but growing water scarcity challenges dry season irrigation efforts. This necessitates smarter irrigation techniques to maximize water use efficiency. This study optimizes water use efficiency in maize production through deficit irrigation in Gazhen-Fuafuat kebele, Fogera woreda, Ethiopia. A field experiment was conducted during the 2019/20 dry season, comparing four irrigation levels: 55%, 70%, 85%, and 100% of crop water requirements (ETc). Findings revealed that while higher irrigation levels generally enhanced plant growth and grain yield, irrigation water use efficiency was optimized at 70% ETc. Deficit irrigation at 55% ETc proved to be suboptimal, leading to significant reductions in crop growth and grain production. Conversely, applying 70% ETc resulted in a 30% reduction in irrigation water use without compromising yield. Compared to full irrigation, deficit irrigation at 85% ETc, 70% ETc, and 55% ETc resulted in yield reductions of 8%, 13.5%, and 33.1%, respectively. However, these reductions were accompanied by water savings of 15%, 30%, and 45%, respectively, leading to corresponding increases in water use efficiency of 8%, 23.4%, and 21.9%. These results suggest that deficit irrigation practices can be effectively employed to improve water use efficiency in maize production, especially in the study area facing water scarcity. This study provides valuable insights into the potential of deficit irrigation to improve maize production in Ethiopia while conserving water resources. Therefore, by implementing deficit irrigation strategies and supporting farmers with appropriate training and resources, Ethiopia can enhance its agricultural productivity and ensure food security in the face of increasing water scarcity.

Abstract: The risks associated with climate events are the main factors responsible for sweet orange production losses in Brazil. For rainfed citrus cultivation, it is mainly due to soil water deficit, but also to citrus cultivation associated with extreme temperatures. The present study investigated the effects of water management in ‘Pera’ sweet orange orchards under sub-humid climate conditions and application of calcium carbonate-based sunscreen on the plant canopy, aiming to mitigate the effects of abiotic stresses on orchard physiology, production, and irrigation water use efficiency. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in a 3 x 2 factorial scheme. Treatments for water management factor were: full irrigation (100% ETc), irrigation with moderate deficit (65% ETc), and no irrigation; and for sunscreen protection: sunscreen use and no sunscreen. The factors have impacted gas exchange, fruit quality, and orchard yield. There was no isolated effect of soil water management on orchard productivity, but with sunscreen, citrus plants are more resilient based on gas exchange data, mitigating environmental effects (high temperatures and water deficit), resulting in improvements in fruit quality related to total fruit mass in plants grown without irrigation and with 12% increase in orchard productivity, regardless of soil water management. Productivity gains related to sunscreen indicate the need for the use of sunscreen protection regardless of soil water management in the region.

Background: Deficit irrigation exerts devastating effects on the productivity and economic returns of cotton crop, as well as carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from soil. Osmolytes play a significant role in facilitating the adaptation of cotton plants to abiotic stresses and improve productivity. Methods: This study investigated the effects of different osmolytes (glycine betaine, ascorbic acid, salicylic acid 100 mg L−1 each) and deficit irrigation (50 %-I50, 75 %-I75, and 100 %-I100) on seed cotton yield, greenhouse gas emission (CO2-C), emission factor (EFs) and economic returns of cotton in Southern Anatolia, Türkiye. Results: Deficit irrigation and osmolyte treatment, both separately and in combination, had a substantial impact on seed cotton yield, CO2-C emission and EFs. The lowest (3800 kg ha−1) and the highest (4746 kg ha−1) seed cotton yield was noted under I50, and I100 treatments, respectively. Similarly, no osmolyte application and application of glycine betaine resulted in the lowest (4097 kg ha−1) and the highest (4545 kg ha−1) seed cotton yield, respectively. The interactive effect indicated that application of glycine betaine and salicylic acid produced better yield than control treatment under all irrigation treatments. The lowest (1.55) and the highest (1.94 mg) CO2-C emission (mg CO2-C m−2 h−1) was recorded for I50, and I100 treatments respectively. Likewise, the lowest (1.52) and the highest (2.19) daily carbon emission were recorded for salicylic acid and glycine betaine application, respectively. The lowest and the highest EFs values were observed for glycine betaine and ascorbic acid application, respectively. Application of glycine betaine resulted in the highest economic returns under all irrigation treatments which was comparable to salicylic acid, whereas the lower economic returns were recorded for control treatment. Conclusion: It is concluded that application of glycine betaine can be used to improve seed cotton yield and economic returns under deficit irrigation. Similarly, glycine betaine proved helpful in reducing CO2-C emission under deficit irrigation compared to normal irrigation.

Implementing optimized irrigation strategies to achieve acceptable wheat yield while conserving groundwater resources is critical for extensively irrigated regions. Field experiments regarding winter wheat irrigation management were conducted for two growing seasons (2013–2014 and 2014–2015) to calibrate and validate the AquaCrop model. To determine proper parameterization of the AquaCrop model for various data availability conditions, the model performance was tested for calibration based on three different datasets, including a) calibration based on a full irrigation condition (CA 1), b) calibration based on a dryland condition (CA 2), and c) calibration based on diverse irrigation conditions, which included full irrigation, different deficit irrigation levels, and dryland (CA 3). The CA 3 calibration scenario resulted in the model's highest accuracy in simulating biomass, grain yield, total soil water, and seasonal evapotranspiration during the calibration and validation process. However, the model performance was also convenient when calibration based on full irrigation conditions was pursued. The calibrated and validated AquaCrop model based on the CA3 was used to analyze long-term (36-year) irrigation management scenarios for identifying the optimized water-conservative winter wheat irrigation strategies. The long-term analysis emphasized that increasing irrigation intervals from 7 to 15 or 20 days could reduce groundwater withdrawal by 52–64 % while expecting a 14–19 % reduction in grain yield. By implementing one 25 mm irrigation after planting and two 25 mm depth irrigation events at jointing or leaf growth stages, 91 % of Kansas's average winter wheat yield (2.88 tons/ha) could be achieved. During wet years, the 1.2 ton/ha reduction in biomass and 0.27–0.62 ton/ha reduction in grain yield is expected irrespective of irrigation management strategies. Considerable uncertainty was detected in grain yield production during dry years under dryland (rainfed) conditions. The maximum winter wheat production could be achieved under normal years, establishing a balance between precipitation and heat units. Our agro-hydrological analysis revealed that the highest irrigation water use efficiency could be attained by the application of two 25 mm irrigation events at jointing or flag leaf growth stages during normal years, the application of two irrigation events during jointing or heading during wet years, and two 25 mm irrigations at heading or flowering during dry years. The results of this research could be used as a baseline for producers of the U.S. Central High Plains and semi-arid regions with similar climate characteristics to cope with water scarcity in winter wheat production.

This study investigated the combination of UV persulfate (UV/PS) treatment of recycled water and deficit irrigation to minimize pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) accumulation and improve crop quality. Lettuce, carrot, and tomato, commonly consumed raw, were cultivated in a greenhouse using PPCPs spiked recycled water, UV/PS treated recycled water, and tap water control, under irrigation rates at 60 %, 80 % and 100 % of crop evapotranspiration (ETC) rates. UV/PS removed ≥ 99 % of carbamazepine, diclofenac, and fluoxetine from spiked recycled water. Post-treatment, carbamazepine accumulation in harvested lettuce, carrot, and tomato was reduced by 96–99 %, 35–70 % and 72–93 %, respectively. Minimal accumulation of diclofenac and fluoxetine occurred in edible crops due to their existence as dissociated ions. Three edible crops exhibited distinct trends of PPCPs accumulation in response to irrigation rates. Lettuce exhibited a decreasing PPCPs accumulation with a reduced irrigation rate, which was attributed to slower transpiration. In contrast, carrot and tomato exhibited increased PPCP accumulation due to osmotic adjustment. Lettuce and carrot exhibited higher irrigation water utilization efficiency at deficit irrigation, while the opposite was observed for tomato. This study highlights the beneficial integration of UV/PS with deficit irrigation to conserve water, maintain crop yield, and minimize PPCPs accumulation.

Determining the optimal phosphorus rates and deficit irrigation levels is key to enhancing soybean productivity in the Jawi District, Northwest Ethiopia. Soybean is a vital cash crop in Jawi District, Northwest Ethiopia, and improving its productivity is crucial for food security and community socioeconomic status. The optimal phosphorus and deficit irrigation rates in this region remain unresolved. The aim of this study was to optimize soybean productivity in this region by determining the optimal phosphorus rates and deficit irrigation levels. The experiment was conducted during irrigation seasons 2021/22 and 2022/23 using a split-plot design with an RCBD arrangement. The results showed that combining P rates of 10, 20, 30, and 40 kg ha-1 with 100% ETc. significantly increased soybean grain production. Similarly, soybean grain yield increased at P rates of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 kg ha-1 P with 75% ETc. The highest water productivity recorded was 0.29 kg m-3 at 50% ETc. This study suggests that combining P rates of 10, 20, 30, and 40 kg ha-1 P with 100% ETc. and P rates of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 kg ha-1 P with 75% ETc. could significantly enhance soybean productivity. Implementing these strategies could lead to more sustainable and efficient agricultural practices in Jawi District, thereby improving crop yields and overall profitability.

Southern Xinjiang region represents a prototypical oasis agricultural area, and cotton is the primary cash crop. The current cotton water productivity for this area remains room for improvement. In order to refine cotton drip irrigation strategy in Southern Xinjiang, this study combined field experiment with crop model simulation and prediction. In this experiment, two irrigation methods, furrow irrigation and drip irrigation, and different degrees of deficit irrigation were set up. The impacts of soil moisture on cotton yield and quality were assessed, with the additional utilization of the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM2) for simulating irrigation scenarios and predicting cotton yield field data showed that during the 2021–2022 growing season, drip irrigation significantly increased boll weight, yield, and Water Productivity compared to furrow irrigation. The deficit irrigation with 90 % of full irrigation during the flowering period resulted in the highest yield among all drip irrigation treatments, while simultaneously improving the fiber quality. The RZWQM2 model was calibrated and validated using 2021 and 2022 cotton field experimental data, respectively. The calibrated and verified RZWQM2 model shows good performance. In terms of soil water storage, cotton yield and evapotranspiration. The simulated value output by the model is close to the measured value in the field. Model prediction data suggest that there is still room for improvement in cotton yield, accompanied by an increase in evapotranspiration. But deficit irrigation below 80 % of the full irrigation quotas poses a notable risk of yield reduction. Targeting higher yields, the predicted scenario suggests an increase in water application (irrigation quota:314.8 mm). Additionally, this study proposes irrigation regimes with water savings of 10 % and 20 %, with irrigation quotas of 290.5 mm and 266.5 mm during the growth period, respectively. Based on this study, we provide a more detailed and reliable water-saving scheme for cotton drip irrigation in southern Xinjiang region.

Water productivity (WP) measurement determines the efficiency of water use by assessing the ratio of the crop yield to the amount of water used in production. The objective of this study was to identify the optimal irrigation treatment for Vitis vinifera L. cv. Alvarinho with ground cover in Northern Portugal, with a focus on water productivity. Two irrigation treatments (full irrigation—FI; deficit irrigation—DI) and a control (rainfed—R) were considered. The FI strategy represented the standard irrigation carried out by the vinegrower, based on the water availability and their experience. The cover crop was a variable factor, evaluated in terms of both height and density, both within the crop row and between the rows. In each of the treatments, the available soil water content (ASW) was measured in eight locations in the field throughout the growing season using a capacitive probe (Diviner 2000) previously calibrated. These measurements were used to calibrate the SIMDualKc model, which employed the dual crop coefficient approach. The successful calibration of the model, carried out with treatment R in 2018, was evidenced by the strong correlation between the ASW measured through the capacitive probe and that simulated by SIMDualKc (b=0.988 and r2=0.995). After the model’s calibration, the separation between the transpiration and evaporation components was determined. The maximum transpiration during the growing season was observed in the full irrigation treatment. In this context, the study proceeded to apply the soil water balance components and transpiration generated by the model in the calculation of the WP. The fruit yield productivity was determined by accounting for the total water use in the growing season. The total water used was calculated by combining the volumes of water applied for irrigation and precipitation and the soil water extracted during the growing season by crops and cover crops. The deficit irrigation strategy showed the best performance in both years, with WP values of 3.31 and 1.81 kg m−3 for the years 2018 and 2019, respectively. Therefore, the study concluded that deficit irrigation proved to be the most effective irrigation strategy in terms of water productivity and crop water use efficiency (WUEc).

Abstract Background The combination of compost and biochar (CB) plays an important role in soil restoration and mitigation strategies against drought stress in plants. In the current study, the impact of CB was determined on the characteristics of saline calcareous soil and the productivity of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) plants. The field trials examined CB rates (CB0, CB10 and CB20 corresponding to 0, 10, and 20 t ha‒1, respectively) under deficit irrigation [DI0%, DI20%, and DI40% receiving 100, 80, and 60% crop evapotranspiration (ETc), respectively] conditions on growth, seed yield (SY), quality, and water productivity (WP) of fenugreek grown in saline calcareous soils. Results In general, DI negatively affected the morpho-physio-biochemical responses in plants cultivated in saline calcareous soils. However, amendments of CB10 or CB20 improved soil structure under DI conditions. This was evidenced by the decreased pH, electrical conductivity of soil extract (ECe), and bulk density but increased organic matter, macronutrient (N, P, and K) availability, water retention, and total porosity; thus, maintaining better water and nutritional status. These soil modifications improved chlorophyll, tissue water contents, cell membrane stability, photosystem II photochemical efficiency, photosynthetic performance, and nutritional homeostasis of drought-stressed plants. This was also supported by increased osmolytes, non-enzymatic, and enzymatic activities under DI conditions. Regardless of DI regimes, SY was significantly (P ≤ 0.05) improved by 40.0 and 102.5% when plants were treated with CB10 and CB20, respectively, as similarly observed for seed alkaloids (87.0, and 39.1%), trigonelline content (43.8, and 16.7%) and WP (40.9, and 104.5%) over unamended control plants. Conclusions Overall, the application of organic amendments of CB can be a promising sustainable solution for improving saline calcareous soil properties, mitigating the negative effects of DI stress, and enhancing crop productivity in arid and semi-arid agro-climates.

Abstract This study was carried out in 2022 to examine the yield, yield components and changes in crop water stress index (CWSI) and vegetation index in black cumin with deficit irrigation. Five different irrigation water levels (I0, I25, I50, I75, I100) were used. The amount of irrigation water applied changed between 20 and 276 mm. Plant water consumption (ET) values varied between 182 and 425 mm. The highest seed yields were obtained from I100 treatments (692 t ha−1) and the lowest from I0 treatments (25 t ha−1). Biological yield, plant height, stem diameter, first capsule height, number of capsules per plant, number of branches per plant, number of seeds per capsule and 1000-seed weight of black cumin were affected by deficit irrigation. CWSI lower limit equation to be used in irrigation scheduling was identified Tc−Ta = − 1.7524 × VPD + 0.7698 (R2 = 0.54) and the upper limit 10.9 ℃. For black cumin plants, irrigation is recommended when the CWSI value is between 0.08 and 0.12. 9 different spectral vegetation indices were evaluated in this study. It has been determined that there are significant correlations between yield, yield components and CWSI and spectral vegetation indices.

Enhancing saline water productivity in arid regions is essential for sustainable agriculture. Adding biochar can improve the quantity and quality of tomato yield under higher levels of salinity and lower levels of irrigation. The experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of biochar on enhancing tomato fruit quality and yield under salinity and drought stress. The experiment combines two treatments for irrigation water quality (0.9 and 2.3 dS m−1), four irrigation levels (40, 60, 80, and 100%) of crop evapotranspiration (ETc), and the addition of 5% of biochar to treated soil (BC5%) and untreated soil (BC0%). The results showed that the decrease in the water quality and irrigation levels negatively impacted the yield and properties of tomato fruit, while 5% of biochar application positively improved the yield. Adding biochar decreased the tomato yield by 29.33% and 42.51% under lower-saline-irrigation water than the control, negatively affecting the fruit's physical parameters and mineral content. In contrast, adding biochar and irrigating with saline water at 60% of ETc improved the firmness and quality characteristics of the fruit by 56.60%, 67.19, 99.75, and 73.57% for vitamin C (VC), total titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), and total sugars (TS), respectively, compared to the control, and also reduced the sodium content of the fruits under all irrigation levels compared to untreated plants by biochar. Generally, biochar with saline water under deficit irrigation with 80 and 60% of ETc could be an excellent strategy to enhance the qualitative characteristics of tomato fruits and save approximately 20–40% of the applied water. Knowledge of how certain crops respond to water stress is one of the prerequisites for choosing the best variety and best management practices to maximize crop water productivity (WPc). The selection of a more efficient protocol for managing irrigation depths throughout the cultivation cycle and in the maturation process at the end of the growth period for each sugarcane variety can maximize bioethanol productivity and WPc for bioethanol, sugar and biomass, in addition to the total energy captured by the sugarcane canopy in the form of dry biomass. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of four irrigation depths and four water deficit intensities on the maturation phase for eight sugarcane varieties under drip irrigation, analyzing the responses related to WPc for bioethanol, sugar and biomass. These experiments were conducted at the University of São Paulo. The plots were positioned in three randomized blocks, and the treatments were distributed in a factorial scheme (4 × 8 × 4). The treatments involved eight commercial varieties of sugarcane and included four water replacement levels and four water deficits of increasing intensity in the final phase of the crop season. It was found that for each variety of sugarcane, there was an optimal combination of irrigation management strategies throughout the cycle and during the maturation process. The RB966928 variety resulted in the best industrial bioethanol yield (68.7 L·Mg−1), WPc for bioethanol (0.97 L·m−3) and WPc for sugar (1.71 kg·m−3). The energy of the aerial parts partitioned as sugar had a direct positive correlation with the availability of water in the soil for all varieties. The RB931011 variety showed the greatest potential for converting water into shoots with an energy of 1.58 GJ·ha−1·mm−1, while the NCo376 variety had the lowest potential at 1.32 GJ·ha−1·mm−1. The productivity of first-generation bioethanol had the highest values per unit of planted area for the greatest water volumes applied and transpired by each variety; this justifies keeping soil moisture at field capacity until harvesting time only for WR100 water replacement level with a maximum ethanol potential of 13.27 m3·ha−1. The Ogallala aquifer, underlying eight states from South Dakota to Texas, is practically non-recharging south of Nebraska, and groundwater withdrawals for irrigation have lowered the aquifer in western Kansas. Subsequent well-yield declines encourage deficit irrigation, greater reliance on precipitation, and producing profitable drought-tolerant crops like upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum (L.)). Our objective was to evaluate deficit irrigated cotton growth, yield, and water productivity (CWP) in northwest, west-central, and southwest Kansas in relation to El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO) phase effects on precipitation and growing season cumulative thermal energy (CGDD). Using the GOSSYM crop growth simulator with actual 1961–2000 location weather records partitioned by the ENSO phase, we modeled crop growth, yield, and evapotranspiration (ET) for irrigation capacities of 2.5, 3.75, and 5.0 mmd−1 and periods of 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Regardless of location, the ENSO phase did not influence CGDD, but precipitation and lint yield decreased significantly in southwest Kansas during La Niña compared with the Neutral and El Niño phases. Simulated lint yields, ET, CWP, and leaf area index (LAI) increased with increasing irrigation capacity despite application duration. Southwestern Kansas producers may use ENSO phase information with deficit irrigation to reduce groundwater withdrawals while preserving desirable cotton yields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Addressing agricultural water scarcity poses a current challenge of growing concern, exacerbated by climate change. This is particularly relevant for stone fruit trees, such as apricot, cultivated in semi-arid zones, where regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) strategies are gaining attention to tackle the challenge. The RDI method involves optimizing various factors based on how the plant responds physiologically to indicators of its water needs. Among these indicators, water potential is considered the most reliable and influential measure. For numerous apricot varieties and diverse geographic locations, research consistently shows that implementing water reduction strategies during non-critical developmental stages of floral bud development or fruit growth does not significantly impact crop yield. However, it does lead to reduced vegetative growth, which could offer additional benefits in crop management. Furthermore, the implementation of RDI strategies leads to advantageous improvements in fruit quality, particularly storage capacity and morphometric and chemical fruit characteristics, such as total soluble solids content. This scoping review study suggests that RDI is a feasible strategy to address water scarcity in apricot cultivation; however, further studies focused on continuous water monitoring alternatives are necessary to optimize RDI techniques. Future research should prioritize optimizing RDI for different growth stages, exploring advanced technologies for precise implementation, and assessing environmental impacts, while addressing research gaps including the influence of climate variability and the interaction with other agronomic practices, to refine RDI strategies and enhance apricot orchard sustainability and productivity. Climate change scenarios and water restrictions are key challenges for Mediterranean citriculture, requiring sustainable deficit irrigation (DI) strategies to ensure sustainable yields. Further research on the physiological pathways that regulate crop responses to water stress is necessary. This work describes the physiological limitations induced under drought conditions in young Navelina orange trees, including the crop's capability to recuperate its physiological status upon rewatering and after water withholding. A trial was conducted in two-year-old trees subjected to three irrigation treatments: a full irrigation treatment (FI) and two different DI strategies. The results show significant decreases in gas exchange rates for stem water potential (ΨStem) values below −1.5 MPa, evidencing diffusive limitations from drought stress. Additionally, there was evidence of increased osmolyte synthesis, a preventative response to oxidative damage. Significantly increased levels of proline (Pro) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were observed with higher levels of water stress (ΨStem < −1.8 MPa), which leads us to assume that this threshold signals the presence of oxidative damage with no capacity for subsequent recovery, probably affecting the final yield. This study evaluates the interaction effect of different irrigation strategies and winter wheat cultivars on yield and water use efficiency in a semi-arid region. The aim is to identify effective water-saving strategies for sustainable winter wheat production considering the variability in annual rainfall patterns over two years in Shiraz, Iran. The irrigation strategies included full irrigation (FI), deficit irrigation at 0.75FI, 0.5FI, and rainfed with supplemental irrigation at sowing. Two winter wheat cultivars, Varedati and Sirvan, were tested. The results showed no significant differences in grain yield, dry matter, and harvest index between the two cultivars. However, deficit irrigation (0.75FI and 0.5FI) and rainfed conditions led to a significant reduction in winter wheat yield and dry matter. The first year, with lower rainfall, resulted in a 16% decrease in grain yield and dry matter compared to the second year with higher rainfall. The rainfed treatment, supplemented with irrigation at sowing, yielded about 44% of the full irrigation regime in both years. Deficit irrigation negatively impacted yield components such as 1000-grain weight and the number of spikes per unit area. The Varedati cultivar had lower 1000-grain weight and spikes per unit area but a higher number of grains per spike compared to the Sirvan cultivar. In comparison to FI, rainfed treatments decreased RLD by 45% in both years. However, Sirvan cultivar exhibited a higher level of resistance in terms of root growth under water stress conditions.The study highlights the importance of selecting suitable irrigation strategies based on annual rainfall patterns to optimize winter wheat yield and water use efficiency in semi-arid regions. Surplus wastewater accumulates in winter and requires a discharging solution. In our study we examined the effects of using treated wastewater (TWW) as supplemental pasture irrigation in winter. To test the effect of TWW irrigation on the vegetation and soil, 10 grazing prevention exclosures were established at Ramat‐Hanadiv Park, Israel, with half of them irrigated with TWW. Soil and vegetation were sampled during 2 years of irrigation and 1 year after cessation of irrigation. Vegetation composition, species richness, and productivity were sampled at the peak of the growing season and various indices of herbage quality were measured. Our results show that irrigation with wastewater increased herbage production by an average of 38% and total pasture protein production by 9% relative to the control subplots. Conversely, TWW irrigation decreased plant protein content while increasing herbage fibre content and lowering its digestibility. Over a period of 2 years, species richness decreased in the irrigated subplots. Most of the soil indices examined were not affected by irrigation, but in the irrigation subplots, sodium values and the sodium adsorption‐ratio were higher than in areas without irrigation. Additional resources in winter enabled the plants to grow rapidly and increased interplant competition. Changes in vegetation composition were revealed through functional group reshuffling and species richness decline. The results of our study show that wastewater irrigation causes an increase in productivity but a decrease in forage quality. The impact of water deficit severity and the specific growth stages at which water stress is applied have been found to have significant implications for both tomato yield and fruit quality. Recent findings have highlighted the influence of water deficits during the reproductive phase on tomato fruit quality. This study aimed to assess the effects of deficit irrigation on tomato fruit quality and overall plant productivity. Cherry tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme) were grown in a greenhouse from August to November 2022. Three distinct watering regimes were implemented: Daily watering (T1), watering every 3 days (T2) and watering every 7 days (T3), starting from the flowering stage and continuing through subsequent plant development stages. The mean soil metric potentials (SMP) were -4.9, -29.7 and -52.8 kPa for T1, T2 and T3, respectively. Various traits of fruit size, fruit biomass, total soluble solids (TSS), water content, glucose content and lycopene content were measured. Additionally, the overall plant biomass and root-to-shoot ratio were evaluated. The results revealed that traits of the fruit size, such as diameter, length, volume and fresh weight, were most favorable when plants were subjected to the T2 watering regime, while higher and lower watering frequencies led to smaller fruit sizes. Interestingly, the TSS concentration had the most pronounced response to drought stress, indicating increased fruit sweetness. However, the fruit water content, glucose content and lycopene content remained unaffected by the different watering regimes. Furthermore, plants subjected to the T3 with the minimum SMP at -196.4 kPa exhibited enhanced development of the root system, prioritizing resource acquisition such as water and mineral nutrients over shoot components. In conclusion, this study provided valuable insights for agricultural practitioners, offering a range of alternatives that can inform optimal irrigation strategies that effectively enhance the quality of cherry tomato yields. Melatonin, an important phytochemical, encourages plants to redirect growth in response to environmental stresses. The study aims to investigate the changes in the morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular properties of spinach subjected to the exogenous application of melatonin (MEL) at different doses under different water stress. The following four irrigation levels were applied: I100 (complete irrigation), I80 (20% water deficit), I60 (40% water deficit), and I40 (60% water deficit). MEL was applied through a spray on the leaves in three doses—0, 50, and 100 µM. In the present study, the application of MEL50 exhibited no significant decrease in water use efficiency (WUE) at the I80 irrigation level compared to the I100 irrigation level, while a significant decrease in the WUE was observed beyond this point. The application of MEL contributed to influencing the morphological parameters while also positively affecting the photosynthesis activity and, contribution to the antioxidant defense system. It was observed that the genes involved in the carbon metabolism of photosynthesis), the antioxidant mechanism, and the continuity of photosynthesis, all of which affect the expression of melatonin, facilitated water stress reduction in spinach. Transitioning from full to deficit irrigation (DI) has become a key strategy in arid regions to combat water scarcity and enhance irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE). However, implementing DI requires additional approaches to counter its negative effects on wheat production. One effective approach is the foliar application of salicylic acid (SA), micronutrients (Mic; zinc and manganese), and macronutrients (Mac; nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium). However, there is a lack of knowledge on the optimal combinations and timing of foliar application for these components to maximize their benefits under arid conditions, which is the primary focus of this study. A two-year field study was conducted to assess the impact of the foliar application of SA alone and in combination with Mic (SA + Mic) or Mic and Mac (SA + Mic + Mac) at various critical growth stages on wheat growth, physiology, productivity, and IWUE under DI conditions. Our result demonstrated that the foliar application of different components, the timing of application, and their interaction had significant effects on all investigated wheat parameters with few exceptions. Applying different components through foliar application at multiple growth stages, such as tillering and heading or tillering, heading, and grain filling, led to significant enhancements in various wheat parameters. The improvements ranged from 7.7% to 23.2% for growth parameters, 8.7% to 24.0% for physiological traits, 1.4% to 21.0% for yield and yield components, and 14.8% to 19.0% for IWUE compared to applying the components only at the tillering stage. Plants treated with different components (SA, Mic, Mac) exhibited enhanced growth, production, and IWUE in wheat compared to untreated plants. The most effective treatment was SA + Mic, followed by SA alone and SA + Mic + Mac. The foliar application of SA, SA + Mic, and SA + Mic + Mac improved growth parameters by 1.2–50.8%, 2.7–54.6%, and 2.5–43.9%, respectively. Yield parameters were also enhanced by 1.3–33.0%, 2.4–37.2%, and 3.0–26.6% while IWUE increased by 28.6%, 33.0%, and 18.5% compared to untreated plants. A heatmap analysis revealed that the foliar application of SA + Mic at multiple growth stages resulted in the highest values for all parameters, followed by SA alone and SA + Mic + Mac applications at multiple growth stages. The lowest values were observed in untreated plants and with the foliar application of different components only at the tillering stage. Wheat is one of the most important cereal crops in Egypt and all over the world. Its productivity is adversely affected by drought due to deficient irrigation to provide nutrients required for plant growth. In a field experiment, silicon foliar applications at concentrations of 0, 200, and 400 mg L−1 were performed at different irrigation rates ranging from 1000 to 4000 m3 ha−1 to assess water irrigation productivity and wheat crop yield in a calcareous soil under arid climate conditions. Increased irrigation rates led to a significant increase in soil nutrient dynamics, as well as in the number and weight of grains per spike, leaf area index, grain yield, straw yield, and biological yield, with the exception of the weight of 1000 grains. Spraying with sodium silicate had a significant impact on grain yield and harvest index but did not significantly impact the other traits. Furthermore, the interaction between irrigation and silicate application rates showed significance only for grain yield, the number of spikes/m2, and the harvest index. Applying three times irrigation could produce the highest nutrient retention, wheat yield, and water irrigation productivity. No significance was observed between 3000 m3 ha−1 and 4000 m3 ha−1 irrigation, indicating a saving of 25% of applied irrigation water. It can be concluded that applying irrigation at 3000 m3 ha−1 could be a supplemental irrigation strategy. High wheat grain yield can be achieved under deficit irrigation (3000 m3 ha−1) on the northwestern coast of Egypt with an arid climate by spraying crops with sodium silicate at a rate of 400 mg L−1. The influence of water regimes on plants is crucial for integrating bush tea (Athrixia phylicoides DC.) into strategies in Sub-Saharan Africa to tackle food and nutritional insecurity by considering physiological aspects, nutritional yield, nutritional water productivity, and metabolite composition. The objective of the study was to determine the physiological aspects, including leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence, nutritional yield, nutritional water productivity, and metabolite composition of bush tea under varying water regimes. The tunnel experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with treatments consisting of three water regimes: 100% of crop water requirement (ETa), 30% of ETa, and a control (no irrigation), all replicated three times. The morphological aspects were recorded on a weekly basis. However, yield, nutrient content, nutritional water productivity (NWP), and phytochemical composition were determined at harvest. The phytochemical analysis by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), coupled with visualization of the detected chemical spaces through molecular networking, indicated Athrixia phylicoides DC. to be rich in various bioactive compound derivatives, including methyl chlorogenate, flavonoids, tartaric acid, caffeoylquinic acid, and glutinane. The results showed that 30% ETa enhanced plant growth, nutrient content, and nutritional water productivity compared to other water treatments. Nevertheless, 100% ETa yielded more (95.62 kg ha−1) than 30% ETa (60.61 kg ha−1) and control (12.12 kg ha−1). The accumulation of chlorogenic acids was higher under 30% ETa compared to 100% ETa and control. Therefore, this study is the first to determine the accumulation of various bioactive compounds in bush tea leaf extracts under varying water regimes. Drought stress is a group of abiotic stresses that affects plant growth and yield production. A field experiment over two successive seasons (2021–2022 and 2022–2023) in sand soil was conducted to investigate the integration effect of deficit irrigation, soil amendment "hundzsoil", and the spraying of proline on the water use efficiency (WUE), yield, and fruit quality of 8-year-old Crimson seedless table grapes. Four application rates of soil amendment (0, 2, 4, and 6 kg hundzsoil /vine) were added during the dormancy period, and four irrigation levels at 125, 100, 75, and 60% of the field capacity were applied just before flowering until harvest. Proline at two levels (0 and 500 ppm) was applied as a foliar spray. Parameters such as bud fertility, weight of 100 berries, juice volume, and cluster number were positively affected by irrigation at 75% FC along with applying hundzsoil at 2 and 4 kg/vine under proline spray in both seasons. Irrigation at the 125% FC level with a 6 kg hundzsoil application under proline spray resulted in the highest yield, berries number, cluster length, cluster weight, and total anthocyanin in both seasons. The TSS/acidity ratio was significantly and positively affected by deficit irrigation (60% FC level) under hundzsoil at a rate of 4 kg alongside proline spray. Reducing irrigation to 60% FC without hundzsoil and proline spray negatively affected numerous growth parameters and the yield. However, irrigation at 60% FC alongside 6 kg of hundzsoil and proline showed the highest IWUE in both seasons. Proline spray was a key factor in conserving water used for irrigation. This study recommends using deficit irrigation alongside hundzsoil application under proline spray as an adequate strategy for water use efficiency and improving the yield and fruit quality of Crimson seedless grapevines cultivated in sand soil. Drought, exacerbated by climate change, represents a growing challenge for agriculture, significantly impacting on crops such as chili peppers (Capsicum), essential in the global diet. This work evaluated the response to water stress by suspending irrigation in Siete Caldos chili pepper plants (Capsicum frutescens). Control plants were watered every 48 h, while stress was induced in the test plants by withholding irrigation for 14 days, followed by an evaluation of recovery through rehydration on day 15. Growth parameters such as the fresh weight of the aerial part, root length, and number of flower buds showed significant differences between the two groups from the eighth day onwards. However, physiologically and biochemically stress-induced decreased relative water content, membrane stability, and chlorophyll content, coupled with increased electrolyte leakage, proline content, and antioxidant activity (catalases and peroxidases), were observed starting on the third day. These effects were more severe on day 14. At the molecular level, the expression of stress response genes (AP2, LOX2, CAT, CuSOD, MnSOD, and P5CS) was quantified at days 3, 14, and 15, revealing differences in transcript levels between the treatments. Finally, rehydration in the stressed plants resulted in the recovery of the evaluated parameters and a survival rate of 100%. Therefore, chili pepper has tolerance mechanisms that allow it to withstand a period of 14 days without irrigation, without reaching its permanent wilting point, and it can recover if conditions improve. In light of the current water scarcity, one strategy for reducing water consumption in irrigated agriculture is to reduce the amount of irrigation water compared to full crop irrigation or in other words deficit irrigation. Deficit irrigation management may be a critical issue due to climate change. Incorporation of different soil conditioners can improve soil hydro-physical properties and mitigate negative effects in water-stressed conditions. Recent review articles either addressed specific crop behavior under water deficit or covered a single type of soil conditioners. This manuscript represents an inclusive review providing insight into deficit irrigation methods incorporated with different soil conditioners. Crop response to deficit irrigation is discussed in the light of some mathematical models. Three main types of soil conditioners are covered: bentonite, biochar, and super-absorbent polymers. Mechanisms associated with effects of each conditioner to enhance soil water retention is highlighted as well.
