FeOCl has gained popularity as a heterogeneous catalyst for pollutant removal in the Fenton process. However, humidification and adsorption of FeOCl are usually not considered in the process. In this way, the adsorption and Fenton activity using rhodamine B (RhB, cationic compound) and bromocresol green (BCG, anionic compound) as pollutants models, at various pH were studied (2, 3.6, 7, and 10). These studies show a very low adsorption level for RhB only at pH 10; therefore, the removal was due to the Fenton reaction. For BCG, at pH 10 the adsorption is almost zero, and at pH 7 after 240 min the adsorption was almost complete, at pH 7, the dye removal by adsorption is akin to Fenton, therefore, at this pH, the remotion was entirely attributed to adsorption. The solution’s removal is the result of the adsorption and Fenton reaction. Additionally, the photocatalytic and photo-Fenton activity of FeOCl was studied by the removal of RhB from a solution at pH 3.6, removing about 84 and 95% of the dye respectively. Under these circumstances, FeOCl is a potential catalyst that could be used for Fenton, photo-Fenton, and photocatalysis. However, the present paper’s experimental data shows that its activity depends largely on the percentage of humidity in the catalyst and the ionic charge of the contaminant that will be treated by the catalyst once it has been activated by water vapor. Characterization essays, such as XRD, show a match for the synthesized FeOCl and FT-IR shows a peak change in the -OH groups range. This could be a possible explanation for the apparition of free radicals.

Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

Este artigo pretende demonstrar que as crianças em processo de alfabetização são capazes de elaborar enunciados concretos, desde que lhes sejam dadas condições de ensino adequadas para tal atividade. Essa temática foi objeto de pesquisa de doutorado, vinculada ao Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação – UNESP/Marília, a qual foi realizada com o objetivo de compreender como se materializa o dialogismo bakhtiniano nos textos orais produzidos por crianças de uma sala de 1º ano do Ensino Fundamental – anos iniciais. Com base em pressupostos da teoria Histórico-Cultural e da abordagem dialógica da linguagem, apresentamos aqui um recorte dos dados gerados por meio da metodologia de pesquisa colaborativa, organizados em um eixo temático de discussão: marcas do dialogismo em textos orais, ilustrado pelos relatos de uma das crianças protagonistas da pesquisa. Os dados revelaram que as crianças constituíram relações dialógicas ao elaborarem seus enunciados concretos quando inseridos numa situação real de interação discursiva.

O artigo trata-se de uma pesquisa que objetivou identificar a atuação do psicólogo na busca da redução dos sintomas psíquicos e comportamentais do idoso com doença de Alzheimer, visando à melhoria de sua qualidade de vida. Para isso, foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com, ao todo, 8 psicólogos, de ambos os sexos, que atuam em instituições privadas localizadas na cidade de Belo Horizonte-MG. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo e à categorização. Como resultado, pactua-se que o psicólogo é um profissional atuante das demandas emocionais não só apresentadas pelo paciente com Alzheimer, mas também, das demandas apresentadas pela família. Além disso, é um profissional que irá atuar na promoção da qualidade de vida, mediando atividades estimulantes, observando demandas emocionais nos idosos, promovendo acolhimento a esses, além de possibilitar ao idoso trabalhar suas próprias questões para entender sua nova realidade de vida e melhorar a sua interação social. Por meio desta pesquisa, foi consenso entre todos os psicólogos entrevistados que, para melhor atender o idoso com Alzheimer, o trabalho multiprofissional se faz necessário. A realidade dessa forma de trabalho dispõe de dificuldades, porém é vista como a mais eficaz no que diz respeito ao entendimento e atendimento das diversas demandas na doença de Alzheimer

Extensive literature elucidated the mechanisms underlying the ability to memorize the positions of objects in space. However, less is known about the impact that objects' features have on spatial memory. The present study aims to investigate differences in egocentric and allocentric object-location memory between hand stimuli depicted in a first-person perspective (1PP) or in a third-person one (3PP). Fifty-two adults encoded spatial positions within a virtual museum environment featuring four square buildings. Each of these buildings featured eight paintings positioned along the walls, with two pictures displayed on each of the four walls. Thirty-two stimuli were employed, which represented pictures of the right hand performing various types of gestures. Half of the stimuli depicted the hand in the 1PP, while the other half depicted the hand in the 3PP. Both free and guided explorations served as encoding conditions. Immediately after that, participants underwent a two-step object-location memory task. Participants were provided with a map of the museum and asked to identify the correct building where the image was located (allocentric memory). Then, they were presented with a schematic representation of the exhibition room divided into four sections and instructed to select the section where they thought the picture was located (egocentric memory). Our findings indicate a memory performance boost associated with egocentric recall, regardless of the perspective of the bodily stimuli. The results are discussed considering the emerging literature on the mnemonic properties of body-related stimuli for spatial memory.

In this paper the authors show that the pathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa migrates between the gut and lungs of an ICU patient, and that differential evolutionary responses to antibiotic treatment occur in these organs.

The microbiological diversity was evaluated in an aerated facultative lagoon system with organic loading rates of 0.2 and 0.6 kgCODm-3d-1 treating effluent from the kraft pulp industry for bioaugmentation purposes. Samples were taken from a laboratory-scale lagoon at steady state treating kraft pulp effluent and operated with two different rates for 120 days. The analysis was performed by 16S rDNA sequencing. The autochthonous bacteria were identified through statistical similarity obtained from the NCBI-BLAST database. The lagoon performance was assessed based on the removal efficiency of biochemical oxygen demand (94% and 80%), chemical oxygen demand (51% and 44%), total organic carbon (49% and 41%), lignin-derived compounds (13% and 27%), turbidity (94% and 87%), for the low and high rates used respectively. Color and TPC were not significantly removed during the biological treatment of the industrial matrix. In the biomass samples collected at a steady state, 9 and 12 species of bacteria were identified at the applied rates. The species Bacillus cereus, Bacillus thuringiensis, and Paenibacillus glucanolyticus found in this matrix presented significant removal of the parameters in the kraft effluent. The three referred species show great promise in the removal of specific parameters in an AFL biological treatment system using bioaugmentation.

Abstract Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with systemic toxicity, represented by changes in biomarkers associated with mood episodes, leading to neurological damage, which may reflect cognitive functions and functionality and the progression of the disease. We aimed to analyze the effect of four biomarkers, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBA-RS), related to oxidative stress in BD and to correlate them with cognitive functions and functionality. We studied 50 bipolar types I/II patients in the euthymic phase, which was divided into two subgroups with 25 patients each (≤ 3 years and ≥ 10 years of diagnosis, from the first episode of mania) and 25 control patients. To analyze frontal cognitive functions and functionality, we used the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) and Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST) tests, respectively. The scores of the FAST and FAB tests showed an increase and decrease respectively, in both bipolar groups, when compared to the control group, demonstrating impairment in cognitive functions and functionality since the disease onset. In addition, changes occurred in all six domains of the FAST test, and in four domains of the FAB test in bipolar patients when compared to the control group. Regarding oxidative stress biomarkers, we did not find changes in SOD and GSH-Px activities; however, a significant increase in CAT activity and lipid peroxidation was observed in both groups, although the patients were euthymic and medicated. These results allow us to raise the hypothesis that since the beginning of the disease, the euthymic bipolar patient has presented a level of oxidative stress, which gets worse with the evolution of the disease, promoting impairments in the frontal cognitive functions and functionality gradually.

O reconhecimento de interfaces da Fonologia está vinculado ao próprio funcionamento do sistema linguístico, tanto em sua condição interna, a partir de uma interpretação estreita do termo interface, ao se considerarem as relações entre os componentes que constituem a língua, como em sua condição externa, em uma perspectiva ampla do termo, ao se considerar a relação entre esses componentes e os ramos da Linguística que estabelecem conexão com outras áreas do conhecimento. É incontestável que, em seu plano interno, nos sistemas linguísticos está incluída a existência de interseção entre os diferentes componentes, como o fonológico, o morfológico, o sintático e o semântico, e de muitas fronteiras, por vezes controversas, entre eles compartilhadas, como também, em seu plano externo, estão presentes dimensões de naturezas diversas, como a sócio-histórica, a antropológica, a psicológica, a clínica, a tecnológica, entre outras. A natureza multifacetada dos sistemas linguísticos é desafiadora e muitos são os linguistas brasileiros que enfrentam o jogo de voltar-se para fenômenos de interface no exame do funcionamento do português, um movimento inspirado pelas pesquisas de interface conduzidas na área nos últimos anos, consideradas como [...] the most intellectually engaging and challeging research [...] por Ramchand e Reiss (2007 p. 2). As mudanças teóricas e metodológicas pelas quais a Fonologia, como disciplina, vem passando, atestadas por Oostendorp et al. (2011), justificando a constatação desses autores de que estamos vivendo hoje [...] a very exciting time to be a phonologist (Oostendorp et al. 2011, p. xxxi), são motivadas, em grande parte, pela formulação de questões sobre a estrutura sonora das línguas que necessitam da aproximação de diferentes componentes da Linguística para serem respondidas de maneira eficiente. Com foco no componente fonológico da língua, as relações com a face fonética do sistema, com a realidade do funcionamento de estruturas morfológicas e sintáticas e com a sua representação na forma escrita são, por exemplo, temas de alguns estudos de interface. Outras pesquisas de interface voltam-se para a comparação entre diferentes fonologias ou para abordagens teóricas diferenciadas e seu poder explicativo diante de fatos fonológicos. Há também investigações que, em visões de interfaces, descrevem e analisam o comportamento da fonologia sob o viés de sua aquisição, como primeira ou segunda língua, ou de sua variação e mudança. Estas últimas visões são capazes de reunir fenômenos fonológicos e sociais, oferecendo o encaixamento social de fatos estruturais da língua. Têm-se, portanto, espécies de desdobramentos em abordagens de interfaces da fonologia, que tornam os estudos mais complexos e que também lhes podem atribuir maior alcance e maior interesse. É nesta visão ampla e multifacetada que estão situados os doze artigos que compõem este número da Working Papers em Linguística.

Summary: Background: Disturbed hepatic energy metabolism contributes to non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD), but the development of changes over time and obesity- or diabetes-related mechanisms remained unclear. Methods: Two-day old male C57BL/6j mice received streptozotocin (STZ) or placebo (PLC) and then high-fat (HFD) or regular chow diet (RCD) from week 4 (W4) to either W8 or W16, yielding control [CTRL = PLC + RCD], diabetes [DIAB = STZ + RCD], obesity [OBES = PLC + HFD] and diabetes-related non-alcoholic steatohepatitis [NASH = STZ + HFD] models. ABSTRACT This study proposes a strategy for large-scale testing among a large number of people for the early diagnosis of COVID-19 to elucidate the epidemiological situation. Pool testing involves the analysis of pooled samples. This study aimed to discuss a reverse transcription technique followed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction using pool testing to detect SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal swab samples. The study proposes an innovative diagnostic strategy that contributes to resource optimization, cost reduction, and improved agility of feedback from results.

ABSTRACT Objective To describe and compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients admitted to intensive care units during the first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods In this retrospective single-center cohort study, data were retrieved from the Epimed Monitor System; all adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit between March 4, 2020, and October 1, 2021, were included in the study. We compared the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients admitted to the intensive care unit of a quaternary private hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, during the first (May 1, 2020, to August 31, 2020) and second (March 1, 2021, to June 30, 2021) waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Se evaluó la presencia de ectoparásitos en alevines de tilapia del nilo Oreochromis niloticus cultivados en la estación Dulceacuícola de Divisa, República de Panamá. Se analizó un total de 75 alevines de 60 días de edad, se midieron peso y largo. Las branquias, el mucus y secciones de cada aleta fueron preparados en fresco para su observación. Se registró la presencia de parásitos en 59 individuos (79 %) mediante microscopía óptica. Se identificaron dos monogeneos Gyrodactylus sp. y Cichlidogyrus sp., lo que representó 1.69 % del total muestreado, respectivamente; además de protozoarios ciliados: Trichodina sp. (100 %), Ambiphrya sp. (27.10 %) y Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (6.77 %). Este estudio constituye el primer reporte de Cichlidogyrus sp. y Ichthyophtrhirius multifiliis en esta estación de cultivo.

Nanodiamonds are increasingly popular in biomedical applications, including optical labelling, drug delivery and nanoscale sensing. Potential new applications are in studying infertility or labelling sperm cells. However, for these applications, it is necessary that nanodiamonds are inert and do not alter sperm properties. In this article, we assessed the biocompatibility of nanodiamonds in detail. We investigated different sizes and concentrations of nanodiamonds and sperm preparation methods. We evaluated if the metabolic activity, membrane integrity, morphology and formation of reactive oxygen species were altered. These parameters were tested for sperm cells in their uncapacitated and capacitated states. Unfortunately, FNDs are not universally biocompatible. Generally, cells in the capacitated state are more prone to stress. Additionally, larger particles and lower concentrations are tolerated better than smaller and higher concentrated particles.

Background: The impact of adjunctive anti-inflammatory treatment on outcomes for patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) and coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs) is unknown. Methods: Using data from the International KD Registry in patients with ≥ medium CAA we evaluate associations of treatment with outcomes and major adverse cardiac events (MACE). Results: Medium or large CAA was present in 527 (32%) patients. All were treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), 70% were male, and the median age was 1.3 years (interquartile range: 0.4-4.0 years). The most common acute therapies included single IVIG alone in 243 (46%), multiple IVIG in 100 (19%), multiple IVIG + corticosteroids in 75 (14%), and multiple IVIG + infliximab + corticosteroids in 44 (8%) patients. Patients who received therapy beyond single IVIG had a larger CA z-score at baseline (P < 0.001) and a higher rate of bilateral CAA (P < 0.001). Compared with IVIG alone, early adjunctive treatments (within 3 days of initial IVIG) were not associated with time to CAA regression or MACE, whereas later adjunctive therapy was associated with MACE and longer time to CAA regression. Patients receiving IVIG plus steroids vs IVIG alone had a trend towards shorter time to CAA regression and lower risk of MACE (P = 0.07). A larger CAA z-score at baseline was the strongest predictor of an increase in the CAA z-score over follow-up, lower likelihood of CAA regression, and higher risk of MACE. Conclusions: Persistence of CAA and MACE are more strongly associated with baseline severity CAA than with acute adjuvant anti-inflammatory therapy. Patients who received late adjunctive therapy are at higher risk for worse outcomes. Résumé: Contexte: L’incidence d’un traitement anti-inflammatoire d’appoint chez les patients atteints de la maladie de Kawasaki (MK) compliquée d’anévrismes coronariens est inconnue. Méthodologie: À partir de données provenant du registre international de la maladie de Kawasaki portant sur les patients ayant subi des anévrismes coronariens modérés ou importants, nous avons évalué l’incidence des différents traitements sur les résultats cliniques et les événements cardiovasculaires indésirables majeurs (ECIM). Résultats: Des anévrismes coronariens modérés ou importants ont été relevés chez 527 patients (32 %). Tous les patients recevaient des immunoglobulines administrées par voie intraveineuse (IgIV); 70 % d’entre eux étaient de sexe masculin, et leur âge médian était de 1,3 an (écart interquartile : de 0,4 an à 4,0 ans). Les traitements d’urgence les plus fréquents comprenaient un seul traitement par IgIV chez 243 patients (46 %), plusieurs traitements par IgIV chez 100 patients (19 %), une association de plusieurs traitements IgIV et de corticostéroïdes chez 75 patients (14 %) et une association de plusieurs traitements IgIV, de corticostéroïdes et d’infliximab chez 44 patients (8 %). Les patients ayant reçu un traitement autre qu’un seul traitement IgIV présentaient des scores z initiaux plus élevés pour le diamètre des artères coronaires (P < 0,001) et un taux plus élevé d’anévrismes coronariens bilatéraux (P < 0,001). En comparaison d’un traitement par IgIV seulement, les traitements d’appoint précoces (administrés dans les trois jours suivant le début du traitement par IgIV) n’ont pas eu d’incidence sur la durée avant la régression des anévrismes coronariens ni sur la survenue d’ECIM, alors que les traitements d’appoint plus tardifs ont été associés à un risque plus élevé d’ECIM et à une régression plus tardive des anévrismes coronariens. Les patients ayant reçu une association d’IgIV et de corticostéroïdes avaient tendance à présenter une régression plus rapide des anévrismes coronariens et un plus faible risque d’ECIM que ceux recevant uniquement un traitement par IgIV (P = 0,07). Un score z initial plus élevé pour un anévrisme coronarien était le facteur prédictif le plus puissant d’une augmentation du score z pendant la période de suivi, d’une probabilité plus faible de régression de l’anévrisme et d’un risque plus élevé d’ECIM. Conclusions: La gravité initiale de l’anévrisme coronarien est plus fortement associée à la persistance de l’anévrisme et à la survenue d’ECIM que le recours à un traitement anti-inflammatoire d’urgence en appoint. Les patients recevant un traitement d’appoint tardif étaient par ailleurs plus susceptibles de présenter des résultats défavorables.

Background: Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is challenging to diagnose in early postnatal life. We aimed to describe the resource utilization and predictors for the need of intervention in an antenatal suspicion of CoA. Methods: A retrospective study of infants with an antenatal suspicion of CoA born at ≥37 weeks was performed. Those not requiring intervention (normal) were compared with those who required cardiac surgery (CoA). Strain was measured using speckle-tracking echocardiography. Results: A total of 51 newborns were included; 40 (78%) were considered normal and 11 (22%) underwent intervention. Echocardiography occurred within the first day of life for both groups. Right ventricular (RV) predominance was present in the CoA group, as demonstrated by the left ventricular (LV) end-systolic eccentricity index (1.60 [0.28] vs 2.16 [0.45]; P < 0.001) and by a larger RV end-diastolic area (EDA) in apical 4-chamber (A4C) relative to LV-EDA—with a ratio of 1.56 [0.23] vs 1.02 [0.2]; P < 0.001. An RV/LV EDA ratio in A4C ≥1.3 had a high probability for CoA (area under the curve = 0.97). Newborns with CoA had a lower RV deformation (peak systolic strain rate: −0.98 [0.17] vs −0.83 [0.2]; P = 0.02). Intraclass correlation coefficient for the EDA ratio revealed a good inter-rater agreement (0.76; 95% confidence interval: 0.55-0.87). Analysis with rater #2 revealed that the EDA ratio ≥1.3 predicted 100% of CoA. Conclusions: The majority of those with an antenatal suspicion of CoA did not require intervention but were high consumers of resources. Within the first day of life, the ventricular EDA ratio in A4C may help predicting those with true CoA requiring intervention. Résumé: Contexte: La coarctation de l’aorte (CoA) est difficile à diagnostiquer au début de la vie postnatale. Nous avons voulu décrire l’utilisation de ressources et les facteurs prédictifs à prendre en compte pour déterminer la nécessité d’une intervention en cas de suspicion prénatale de CoA. Méthodologie: Une étude rétrospective portant sur des nourrissons nés à ≥ 37 semaines chez qui il y avait une suspicion prénatale de CoA a été réalisée. Ceux chez qui aucune intervention n’a été nécessaire (groupe de sujets sans anomalie) ont été comparés à ceux chez qui une intervention chirurgicale cardiaque a été nécessaire (groupe de sujets présentant une CoA). L’échocardiographie de suivi des marqueurs acoustiques (speckle-tracking echocardiography) a servi à mesurer la déformation. Résultats: Au total, 51 nouveau-nés ont été inclus; 40 (78 %) ne présentant aucune anomalie selon les évaluateurs, et 11 (22 %) ayant subi une intervention. L’échocardiographie a été réalisée au cours du premier jour de vie dans les deux groupes. Une prédominance ventriculaire droite existait chez les sujets présentant une CoA, comme l’ont démontré l’indice d’excentricité ventriculaire gauche télésystolique (1,60 [0,28] vs 2,16 [0,45]; P < 0,001) et la plus grande surface télédiastolique du ventricule droit (STDVD) en vue apicale 4 cavités (A4C) par rapport à la surface télédiastolique du ventricule gauche (STDVG) – le rapport étant de 1,56 [0,23] vs 1,02 [0,2]; P < 0,001. Un rapport STDVD/STDVG en A4C ≥ 1,3 correspondait à une forte probabilité de CoA (aire sous la courbe = 0,97). La déformation ventriculaire droite était moindre chez les nouveau-nés présentant une CoA (taux de déformation systolique maximal : −0,98 [0,17] vs −0,83 [0,2]; P = 0,02). Le coefficient de corrélation intraclasse pour le rapport des surfaces télédiastoliques a révélé une bonne concordance interévaluateurs (0,76; intervalle de confiance à 95 % : 0,55-0,87). L’analyse de l’évaluateur no 2 a révélé qu’un rapport des surfaces télédiastoliques ≥ 1,3 avait une valeur prédictive de 100 % au regard de la CoA. Conclusions: Dans la majorité des cas où il y avait suspicion prénatale de CoA, aucune intervention n’a été nécessaire, mais les ressources médicales mobilisées étaient importantes. Dans ce contexte, le calcul du rapport des surfaces télédiastoliques ventriculaires en A4C au cours du premier jour de vie peut aider à prévoir les cas où une véritable CoA nécessitera une intervention.

Abstract Children with orofacial clefting (OFC) present with a wide range of dental anomalies. Identifying these anomalies is vital to understand their etiology and to discern the complex phenotypic spectrum of OFC. Such anomalies are currently identified using intra-oral exams by dentists, a costly and time-consuming process. We claim that automating the process of anomaly detection using deep neural networks (DNNs) could increase efficiency and provide reliable anomaly detection while potentially increasing the speed of research discovery. This study characterizes the use of` DNNs to identify dental anomalies by training a DNN model using intraoral photographs from the largest international cohort to date of children with nonsyndromic OFC and controls (OFC1). In this project, the intraoral images were submitted to a Convolutional Neural Network model to perform multi-label multi-class classification of 10 dental anomalies. The network predicts whether an individual exhibits any of the 10 anomalies and can do so significantly faster than a human rater can. For all but three anomalies, F1 scores suggest that our model performs competitively at anomaly detection when compared to a dentist with 8 years of clinical experience. In addition, we use saliency maps to provide a post-hoc interpretation for our model’s predictions. This enables dentists to examine and verify our model’s predictions.

The use of sugammadex for reversal of rocuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade after caesarean section is nowadays common practice, but concerns exist about its use in pregnant women undergoing non-obstetric surgery. We report six cases of pregnant women submitted to general anesthesia for non-obstetric surgery in which neuromuscular blockade was reversed with sugammadex. We followed the outcome of both mother and baby during and after delivery. Sugammadex seemed to be a safe option for both mother and baby but more reports are necessary to fill the evidence gap and increase the global knowledge about its safety in this special group of patients.

The spatial distribution of the world population is uneven, with a density of about 40% living in coastal regions. The trend is expected to continue in both demographic indicators and urban development rate, being many coastal cities in seismic- and tsunami-prone regions and built through informal and unplanned settlements, exposing their population and assets to such hazards. Recent tectonic-triggered events raised awareness of the cascading earthquake and tsunami threat and highlighted the paucity of structural design criteria considering the cumulative effects of both. By being exposed to the ground-motion, the structures’ resistance may decrease and become residual/non-existent to support the incoming tsunami, implying an underestimation of the risk.Risk management can benefit from reinforcing the ties between natural hazards and engineering practitioners, linking science and industry, and promoting dialogue between risk analysts and policy-makers. Motivated by the expansion plans of an internationally-sized deep-water port located in a tsunami-prone region, a reflection on the work needed to perform a multi-risk assessment and the challenges yet to overcome is introduced to emphasize the challenge of combining safety requirements with financial and ecologic concerns. A conceptual interdisciplinary-based methodology is proposed to support uncertainty-aware, systematic and informed decisions.

The scientific evidence regarding the possibility of transferring benefits derived from cognitive training focused on working memory and inhibitory control to reading skills in children aged 6 to 12 is inconclusive. This study carries out a systematic review of recent published studies on this topic with the aim of analysing the specific role of various cognitive stimulation programs in the growth of executive functions and reading performance in children from ages 6 to 12. Here, we present the main results reported in the most recent literature, where the impact of intervention programs on working memory and inhibitory control in children with typical development are analysed. Even though the effectiveness of executive function training programs in terms of close transfer is conspicuous, there is still a lack of convergence in recently published articles, especially regarding the effects of far transfer in reading comprehension after cognitive stimulation programs are applied.

The aim of this study was to describe epidemiological characteristics and perform SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance in the southeastern region of São Paulo State. During the first months of 2022, we compared weekly SARS-CoV-2 infection prevalence considering age, Ct value, and variants’ lineages. An increase in the number of SARS-CoV-2-positive cases until the fourth epidemiological week of 2022 was observed. From the fourth epidemiological week onwards, the number of tests for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis began to decrease, but the number of positive samples for SARS-CoV-2 remained high, reaching its most expressive level with a rate of 60% of infected individual cases. In this period, we observed a progressive increase in SARS-CoV-2 infection within the 0–10 age group throughout the epidemiological weeks, from 2.8% in the first epidemiological week to 9.2% in the eighth epidemiological week of 2022. We further observed significantly higher Ct values within younger patient samples compared to other older age groups. According to lineage assignment, SARS-CoV-2 (BA.1) was the most prevalent (74.5%) in the younger group, followed by BA.1.1 (23%), BA.2 (1.7%), and Delta (1%). Phylogenetic analysis showed that BA.2 sequences clustered together, indicating sustained transmission of this Omicron VOC sub-lineage by that time. Our results suggest the initial dissemination steps of the Omicron’s sub-linage BA.2 into the younger group, due to specific genomic features of the detected sequences. These data provide interesting results related to the spread, emergence, and evolution of the Omicron variant in the southeast Brazilian population.

We aimed to investigate if children with their first UTI and a concomitant positive blood culture have a higher risk of abnormalities. We performed a retrospective study of children younger than 18 years of age with their first UTI. Multivariate logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate if positive blood cultures are associated with urinary abnormalities. After the screening process, we considered the enrolled 161 children with UTIs. The median age was three months, and 83 were females (43.2%). In multivariate analysis, age (p = 0.001, 95% CI 1.005–1.020), the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa or unusual germs in urine cultures (p = 0.002, 95% CI 2.18–30.36) and the positivity of blood cultures (p = 0.001, 95% CI 2.23–18.98) were significantly associated with urinary abnormalities. A model based on these parameters has an AUC of 0.7168 to predict urinary malformations (p = 0.0315). Conclusions include how greater age, a positive blood culture and the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa or unusual germs in urine culture in children hospitalised for their first episode of a UTI are factors associated with a significantly higher risk of urinary abnormalities. These data can guide the implementation of more personalized strategies to screen for urinary abnormalities that may be included in future guidelines.

Abstract In patients with diabetes, it has been suggested that physical exercise may reduce albuminuria and the progression of renal disease. However, the molecular mechanism by which physical exercise protects the kidney in diabetes remains poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to determine the contribution of muscle irisin secretion induced by aerobic physical exercise with the subsequent activation of AMPK for kidney protection under diabetic conditions. Aerobic physical exercise in rats protected the kidney in streptozotocin-induced diabetes. It reduced albuminuria, glomerular hypertrophy, and glomerular expression of collagen IV and fibronectin, as well as markers of kidney inflammation, when compared to sedentary diabetic rats. These effects were associated with elevation in muscle FNDC5/irisin and activity of AMPK in the diabetic kidney. However, the beneficial effects of exercise were lost when the diabetic rats were treated with CycloRGDyK, that in the bone it has been described as an irisin receptor blocker. In cultured human tubular (HK-2) cells, treatment with recombinant irisin counteracted the effect of high glucose in a dose-dependent manner. Irisin, per se, also activated AMPK in HK-2 cells. It is concluded that in diabetes, the renal protective effect of exercise may be mediated by the irisin/AMPK pathway.

Abstract Purposes Mental disorders are responsible for 16% of the global burden of disease in adolescents. This review focuses on one contextual factor called community violence that can contribute to the development of mental disorders Objective To evaluate the impact of community violence on internalizing mental health symptoms in adolescents, to investigate whether different proximity to community violence (witness or victim) is associated with different risks and to identify whether gender, age, and race moderate this association. Methods systematic review of observational studies. The population includes adolescents (10-24 years), exposition involves individuals exposed to community violence and outcomes consist of internalizing mental health symptoms. Selection, extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by two researchers. Results A total of 2987 works were identified; after selection and extraction, 42 works remained. Higher exposure to community violence was positively associated with internalizing mental health symptoms. Being a witnessing is less harmful for mental health than being a victim. Age and race did not appear in the results as modifiers, but male gender and family support appear to be protective factors in some studies. Conclusion This review confirms the positive relationship between community violence and internalizing mental health symptoms in adolescents and provides relevant information that can direct public efforts to build policies in the prevention of both problems.

Abstract The prevalence of impaction of the permanent canine on the cleft side (PCCS) ranges from 12-35% after alveolar bone grafting (ABG). PCCSs usually develop above other permanent teeth in the alveolar process, gradually becoming vertical until they reach the occlusal plane. The type of cleft, hypodontia of lateral incisor on the cleft side, slower PCCS root development, and genetic factors are predictors of impaction and/or its ectopic eruption. Objective: To compare the behavior of PCCS in individuals with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) subjected to secondary alveolar grafting (SAG) with different materials. Methodology: This retrospective longitudinal study analyzed 120 individuals undergoing SAG with iliac crest bone, rhBMP-2, and mandibular symphysis. The individuals were selected at a single center and equally divided into three groups. Panoramic radiographs were analyzed by the Dolphin Imaging 11.95 software to measure PCCS angulation and PCCS height from the occlusal plane at two different timepoints. Results: No statistical significance was found between grafting materials (P=0.416). At T1, the PCCS height from the occlusal plane was greater for rhBMP-2 and mandibular symphysis compared to iliac crest bone. The lateral incisor on the cleft side was not related to success or lack of eruption of PCCS (P=0.870). Conclusion: Impaction rates of PCCS were similar for the materials studied. Absence of the lateral incisor on the cleft side did not prevent spontaneous eruption of PCCSs.

Nas crônicas das Ìndias e cartas jesuíticas do séc. XVI, a temporalidade em relação à tradução se realiza tanto como sobrevivência orgânica e textual quanto como uma política de aceleração. A partir de 1500, a tradução oral da conquista portuguesa depende de figuras pontuais, mas que, depois de 1550, vai aos poucos dando lugar a uma sistematização da tradução feita pelos jesuítas. Em seus colégios, os jesuítas formam agentes bilíngues, os meninos língua, e ao final do séc. XVI produzem as primeiras listas de vocábulos e gramáticas, que rapidamente se difundem. Crônicas e cartas traduzidas, que inserem “outros” sistemas de conhecimento nas terminologias europeias, são “duplamente” translacionais e ampliam ainda mais a temporalidade do processo de tradução colonial. Do momento em que uma crônica é publicada pela primeira vez até quando aparecem suas traduções podem transcorrer meses, décadas ou séculos. Este trabalho considera a temporalidade a partir de uma perspectiva fenomenológica e no contexto do colonialismo, e reconstrói as diferentes camadas de significados que ela cria em relação à conquista traduzida do Brasil.

ObjectivesThe present paper aims to systematically review the literature published from 2015 to 2023 on bruxism in children with the aim to compilate the best available evidence.Materials and MethodsA systematic search in the National Library of Medicine's PubMed, Medline (EBSCO), SCOPUS, and Google Scholar databases was performed to identify all studies on humans assessing genetic, biopsychosocial, and sleep factors assessed with any different approach for sleep bruxism (SB) in children and its interventions. The selected articles were assessed independently by the two authors according to a structured reading of the article's format (PICO). The quality of the articles was evaluated using Quality Assessments Tool for Experimental Bruxism Studies (Qu-ATEBS) and the JBI critical appraisal tools.ResultsA total of 16 articles were included for discussion in the review and grouped into questionnaire/parental-report (n = 7), SB assessment through parental report of SB and clinical examination (n = 4), and instrumental assessment (n = 5) studies. The total quality scores evaluated with STROBE and Qu-ATEBS were high for all included papers. However, in general, there was no control of bias strategies and there was no control group in the intervention studies.ConclusionsInvestigations based on self-report, clinical, and instrumental bruxism assessment showed a positive association with genetics, quality of life aspects (school and emotional functions and overuse of screen-time), mother anxiety and family conformation, diet, alteration in sleep behaviors and architecture, and sleep breathing disorders. Additionally, the literature presents options to increase airway patency and, thus, reduce the occurrence of SB. Tooth wear was not found to be a major sign of SB in children. However, methods of SB assessment are heterogeneous and hamper a reliable comparison of the results.

Extreme heat is a current and future issue on urban areas, with negative impacts on health and quality of life (increasing morbidity and mortality rates). This paper analyses day (12:00–15:00 h) and nighttime (00:00–03:00 h) thermo-physiological comfort (TC) conditions by Local Climate Zones (LCZ) in Lisbon during a particular Local Weather Type (LWT), very hot summer days. For this, 13 different microscale sample areas were chosen covering urban and non-urban land cover classes (LCZs 1–3, 4–6, 8, 9, A and B). Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) and Mean Radiant Temperature (MRT) were modeled on SkyHelios software for 163 days between 2008 and 2014. Results show that during the day all urban LCZ samples depict the same average TC conditions (average UTCI of 34°C—strong heat stress) and densely wooded areas are 2°C cooler (average UTCI of 32°C—moderate heat stress). However, compact areas (LCZs 1–3) with low sky view factor and some vegetation (street trees) display lower percentages of area with higher thermo-physiological discomfort (TD) levels (83% with strong heat stress against 98% in LCZs 8 and 9 and 100% in LCZs 4–6). When considering the hottest days (air temperatures equal or above 35°C—75th percentile), the moderate heat stress class disappears in all samples and the very strong heat stress class appears only on urban areas, occupying between 12% and 16% on LCZs 1–3, 10%–22% on LCZs 4–6, 16%–22% on LCZs 8 and 9 on LCZ 9. During the nighttime period all samples show no thermal stress, favoring nocturnal physiological recovery. TC conditions in Lisbon are strongly influenced by solar radiation and wind, which explains the need to increase the shading area, preferably by trees, and to promote and preserve ventilation paths.

IntroductionOur research group and others demonstrated the implication of the human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) in SARS-CoV-2 infection and their association with disease progression, suggesting HERVs as contributing factors in COVID-19 immunopathology. To identify early predictive biomarkers of the COVID-19 severity, we analyzed the expression of HERVs and inflammatory mediators in SARS-CoV-2-positive and -negative nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swabs with respect to biochemical parameters and clinical outcome.MethodsResiduals of swab samples (20 SARS-CoV-2-negative and 43 SARS-CoV-2-positive) were collected during the first wave of the pandemic and expression levels of HERVs and inflammatory mediators were analyzed by qRT-Real time PCR.ResultsThe results obtained show that infection with SARS-CoV-2 resulted in a general increase in the expression of HERVs and mediators of the immune response. In particular, SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with increased expression of HERV-K and HERV-W, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17, TNF-α, MCP-1, INF-γ, TLR-3, and TLR-7, while lower levels of IL-10, IFN-α, IFN-β, and TLR-4 were found in individuals who underwent hospitalization. Moreover, higher expression of HERV-W, IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-α, and IFN-β reflected the respiratory outcome of patients during hospitalization. Interestingly, a machine learning model was able to classify hospitalized vs not hospitalized patients with good accuracy based on the expression levels of HERV-K, HERV-W, IL-6, TNF-a, TLR-3, TLR-7, and the N gene of SARS-CoV-2. These latest biomarkers also correlated with parameters of coagulation and inflammation.DiscussionOverall, the present results suggest HERVs as contributing elements in COVID-19 and early genomic biomarkers to predict COVID-19 severity and disease outcome.

RESUMO Este artigo traz reflexões acerca de como a sociedade capitalista e patriarcal afeta a relação das mulheres com seu tempo e com seu lazer. Com o objetivo de mapear atravessamentos na relação entre mulheres, lazer e família, a partir de uma pesquisa com movimentos sociais brasileiros de mulheres, realizei um estudo bibliográfico, análise documental e entrevistas com lideranças de movimentos feministas brasileiros. Os resultados apontaram para aspectos macro e micropolíticos que colocam o lazer das mulheres em segundo plano nas reivindicações de tais movimentos. O vínculo estreio com o modelo de família apareceu como uma das motivações que afeta o lazer como direito pessoal. Trago para a reflexão alguns dos aspectos identificados.

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) can be used in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF); however, verifying the best interface for its use needs to be evaluated in the COVID-19 pandemic scenario. To evaluate the behavior of the PaO2/FiO2 ratio in patients with AHRF with and without COVID-19 undergoing NIV with the conventional orofacial mask and the adapted diving mask. This is a randomized clinical trial in which patients were allocated into four groups: Group 1: COVID-19 + adapted mask (n=12); Group 2: COVID-19 + conventional orofacial mask (n=12); Group 3: non-COVID + adapted mask (n= 2); and Group 4: non-COVID + conventional orofacial mask (n=12]. The PaO2/FiO2 ratio was obtained 1, 24 and 48 h after starting NIV and the success of NIV was evaluated. This study followed the norms of the CONSORT Statement and registered in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials, under registration RBR – 7xmbgsz. Both the adapted diving mask and the conventional orofacial mask increased the PaO2/FiO2 ratio. The interfaces differed in terms of the PaO2/FiO2 ratio in the first hour [309.66 (11.48) and 275.71 (11.48), respectively] (p=0.042) and 48 h [365.81 (16.85) and 308.79 (18.86), respectively] (p=0.021). NIV success was 91.7% in groups 1, 2 and 3, and 83.3% in Group 4. No adverse effects related to interfaces or NIV were observed. NIV through the conventional orofacial mask interfaces and the adapted diving mask was effective in improving the PaO2/FiO2 ratio, however, the adapted mask presented a better PaO2/FiO2 ratio during use. There was no significant difference between interfaces regarding NIV failure.

Uma educação financeira se inscreve na Base Nacional Comum Curricular em articulação aos conteúdos da matemática que se ensina na escola. Além disso, nota-se um interesse no campo da pesquisa em Educação Matemática, que passa a tomar a educação financeira como um problema a ser investigado para os processos de ensino e aprendizagem. Isso posto, objetiva-se apresentar reflexões sobre a inserção do tema educação financeira no currículo da matemática escolar analisando a relação histórica entre dinheiro, riqueza e bens materiais e a constituição de subjetividades. Para isso, problematizamos sobre a riqueza ao apresentar os conselhos de conduta de textos da Antiguidade e, a partir das contribuições de Michel Foucault, mostramos como essa questão foi formada e tratada no Renascimento, Classicismo e sua passagem à Modernidade. Por fim, mostraremos como a educação financeira pode constituir subjetividades e como pode ser constituída pela episteme atual.

Objetivo: apresentar as percepções de homens jovens sobre a vivência da paternidade. Método: estudo qualitativo, realizado através de entrevista com 12 jovens de idade entre 18 e 24 anos, captados pela técnica de bola de neve e saturação teórica. O tratamento dos dados deu-se pela análise de conteúdo. Resultados: os jovens pais encontravam-se em cenário socioeconômico desfavorecido. A paternidade foi associada a isolamento e perdas, mas também à renovação e novas perspectivas. O provimento financeiro do filho foi um aspecto relacionado a exigências do modelo de masculinidade e paternidade vigentes, o que pode dificultar a vivência de outras formas de ser pai. Considerações finais: é necessária a implementação de políticas públicas que possibilitem aos rapazes gerenciarem sua vida reprodutiva de forma saudável e responsável, estabelecendo discussões quanto a gênero e masculinidade, para favorecer a vivência de uma paternidade menos calcada nas normas de masculinidade vigentes.

In this article, a fuzzy logic solar tracker was designed and implemented to increase the efficiency of a photovoltaic system by updating the position of the panel throughout the day for optimal use of solar radiation. In the design and implementation of the solar tracker, different control strategies were analyzed, concluding that the fuzzy control satisfies all the requirements of the photovoltaic system with a solar tracker, the developed prototype underwent different tests in a determined period of time to validate the performance of the solar tracker. system compared to one with a fixed position, achieving an increase of 40% compared to fixed solar systems.

Risk of spillover and spillback of mosquito-borne viruses in the neotropics, including yellow fever, dengue, Zika (Flaviviridae: Flavivirus), chikungunya, and Mayaro (Togaviridae: Alphavirus) viruses, is highest at ecotones where humans, monkeys, and mosquitoes coexist. With a view to identifying potential bridge vectors, we investigated changes in mosquito community composition and environmental variables at ground level at distances of 0, 500, 1000, and 2000 m from the edge of a rainforest reserve bordering the city of Manaus in the central Brazilian Amazon. During two rainy seasons in 2019 and 2020, we sampled 9,467 mosquitoes at 244 unique sites using BG-Sentinel traps, hand-nets, and Prokopack aspirators. Species richness and diversity were generally higher at 0 m and 500 m than at 1000 m and 2000 m, while mosquito community composition changed considerably between the forest edge and 500 m before stabilizing by 1000 m. Shifts in environmental variables mainly occurred between the edge and 500 m, and the occurrence of key taxa (Aedes albopictus, Ae. scapularis, Limatus durhamii, Psorophora amazonica, Haemagogus, and Sabethes) was associated with one or more of these variables. Sites where Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus were detected had significantly higher surrounding mean NDBI (Normalized Difference Built-up Index) values than sites where they were not detected, while the opposite was true for Sabethes mosquitoes. Our findings suggest that major changes in mosquito communities and environmental variables occur within 500 m of the forest edge, where there is high risk for contact with both urban and sylvatic vectors. By 1000 m, conditions stabilize, species diversity decreases, and forest mosquitoes predominate. Environmental variables associated with the occurrence of key taxa may be leveraged to characterize suitable habitat and refine risk models for pathogen spillover and spillback.

ABSTRACT Purpose to investigate prosodic boundary effects on the comprehension of attachment ambiguities in Brazilian Portuguese and to test two hypotheses relying on the notion of boundary strength: the absolute boundary hypothesis (ABH) and the relative boundary hypothesis (RBH). Manipulations of prosodic structure influence how listeners interpret syntactically ambiguous sentences. However, the role of prosody in spoken language comprehension of sentences has received limited attention in languages other than English, particularly from a developmental perspective. Methods Twenty-three adults and 15 children participated in a computerized sentence comprehension task involving syntactically ambiguous sentences. Each sentence was recorded in eight different prosodic forms with acoustic manipulations of F0, duration and pause varying the boundary size to reflect predictions of the ABH and RBH. Results Children and adults differed in how prosody influenced their syntactic processing and children were significantly slower than adults. Results indicated that interpretation of sentences varied according to their prosodic forms. Conclusion Neither the ABH or the RBH explained how children and adults who speak Brazilian Portuguese use prosodic boundaries to disambiguate sentences. There is evidence that the way prosodic boundaries influence disambiguation varies cross-linguistically.

BackgroundDevelopmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a known orthopedic pathology of newborns that, if not diagnosed and treated, can lead to debilitating long-term consequences. Ultrasound has proven to be an effective method for the early diagnosis of this condition. Recently, reports of late DDH in populations at risk (breech presentation) and after negative ultrasound examination have emerged in the literature.AimThe objective of the study was to assess the possible appearance of late DDH in Italian children with risk factors but negative ultrasound screening.Materials and methodsWe selected patients with risk factors for DDH and a negative hip ultrasound from the medical records of children referred to the Hip Ultrasound Clinic (Rome, Italy) from January 2018 to November 2021. To identify possible cases of late DDH, from February 2022 to July 2022, all patients who met the inclusion criteria were submitted to orthopedic follow-up clinical evaluation. In the case of a pathological objective examination, radiography was performed.ResultsFifty-five patients (52.7% female, 52.7% with breech presentation, and 41.8% with a positive family history) met the inclusion criteria. The median age of gait onset was 13 months. The median age of orthopedic follow-up examination was 45 months. Only three patients (5.5%) had a pathological examination, but no x-ray were pathological.ConclusionOur study has not documented cases of late DDH. Considering the small study population and the only clinical follow-up, further studies are needed to clarify the possible late development of this condition.

Nesta pesquisa, analisamos o discurso médico que aborda as experiências de menstruar e produz modos de subjetivação específicos acerca das mulheres que menstruam, presente no livro Menstruação, a sangra inútil, do Dr. Elsimar Coutinho. O referencial teórico-metodológico está ancorado na Análise de Discurso francesa, com base nas obras de autores como Pêcheux (2015, 2008, 1995) e Orlandi (2000). Com a análise foi possível observar quais os processos sócio-históricos e os artifícios de linguagem que caracterizam a tese do referido médico de que a menstruação é um fenômeno obsoleto.

Restingas are located all along the Brazilian coast, playing a crucial role in protecting coastal cities from extreme weather events. Threats to this ecosystem have intensified with the dismantling of environmental legislation and regulatory bodies, such as the National Environmental Council (CONAMA). This paper investigates the implications of the change in the composition of CONAMA and the effects on the legal protection of the restinga vegetation. The data were obtained through research of documental sources and legislation, collected between March 2020 and May 2021. The advances and setbacks in the legal protection of the restinga vegetation were identified from 1965 to 2021, with the Federal Law 4,771/1965 as the historical framework. The data collected was analyzed based on fifteen key principles of Ecosystem-Based Management. Social participation in CONAMA was compromised with the edition of Federal Decree 9,806/2019, which reduced the number of full councilors from 108 to 23, being restricted to ministries, confederations, a representative of the Federal Public Prosecutor, and a representative of society. After the restructuring of the advisors, the CONAMA Resolution 500/2020 was approved, revoking the CONAMA Resolution 303/2002, protecting the restinga within 300 meters from the high tide line. The subversion of the democratic principle of popular participation generated a loss of legal protection in the restinga vegetation, moving Brazil away from the commitments established in international conventions, besides bringing risks to the conservation of fragile, dynamic, and unstable environments.

Abstract Many critical advances in research utilize techniques that combine high-resolution with high-content characterization at the single cell level. We introduce the MICS (MACSima Imaging Cyclic Staining) technology, which enables the immunofluorescent imaging of hundreds of protein targets across a single specimen at subcellular resolution. MICS is based on cycles of staining, imaging, and erasure, using photobleaching of fluorescent labels of recombinant antibodies (REAfinity Antibodies), or release of antibodies (REAlease Antibodies) or their labels (REAdye_lease Antibodies). Multimarker analysis can identify potential targets for immune therapy against solid tumors. With MICS we analysed human glioblastoma, ovarian and pancreatic carcinoma, and 16 healthy tissues, identifying the pair EPCAM/THY1 as a potential target for chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy for ovarian carcinoma. Using an Adapter CAR T cell approach, we show selective killing of cells only if both markers are expressed. MICS represents a new high-content microscopy methodology widely applicable for personalized medicine.

Objetivo: desenvolver e validar um instrumento para identificar o comportamento alimentar e os hábitos de vida de sujeitos obesos graves em tratamento pré-operatório de cirurgia bariátrica. Materiais e Métodos: o estudo compreendeu 3 etapas: teórica - através de pesquisa integrativa sobre o tema para elaboração do instrumento; Empírica - através da submissão à um comitê de especialistas para a validação de conteúdo, e; Analítica - utilizando-se para esta etapa o Índice de Validade de Conteúdo (Content Validity Index - CVI. Após análise e ajustes, segundo sugestões do comitê de especialistas, foi realizado um estudo-piloto para verificação da aplicabilidade e validade semântica (inteligibilidade e compreensão) do instrumento na população-alvo. Resultados: a versão final do instrumento, tipo checklist, consiste em quarenta questões, que compreendem dois domínios: comportamento alimentar e hábitos de vida. A análise do comitê de especialistas apontou consistência em relação aos domínios definidos. Contudo, vinte questões apresentaram CVI-C abaixo de 0,8 e foram reformuladas. Sete questões foram excluídas devido CVI-P menor que 0,80. Três questões subdivididas e quatro novas questões foram inseridas no instrumento. A versão final foi aplicada em 41 indivíduos obesos graves que se mostrou compreensível demonstrando objetividade, simplicidade, relevância, clareza e adequação da linguagem. Conclusão: O instrumento foi considerado adequado aos objetivos que se propõe, apresenta questões claras, pertinentes adequada e uma adequada estrutura de apresentação. Portanto, apresenta validade de conteúdo e semântica atestadas por um painel de especialistas e pela população alvo podendo ser utilizado para o manejo de pacientes em tratamento pré-operatório de cirurgia bariátrica.

Abstract Background The study analyzes the allocation of specialized doctors’ orthopedists in a high-complex hospital, using the WHO’s Workload Indicators of Staffing Need (WISN) methodology and approach, which measures the workload pressure on the healthcare team (positive, negative, or well-adjusted). Methods In the first phase, the hospital’s operations and activities were analyzed using the information system. The duration of the tasks performed by the specialist physicians was observed and directly measured in the second phase. Finally, the indicators were analyzed, and the workload was calculated using the WISN application. The measurement was made using the available work time per year divided by the time unit over the previous 12 months. Results The hand surgery care unit was WISN 1.0 and the ratios for the spine surgery care unit was 1.22, indicating enough physicians and no work overload among the groups surveyed. The ratio in the knee unit was 1.69, indicating that there was an excess of staffing for the workload. Conclusion The workload findings and staffing calculations were useful in supporting and orienting the design and implementation of measures to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of health services.

Solar energy has been widely studied due to the sun being considered the most important source of renewable energy, at this time. The most promising opportunity for us is in modeling solar energy for different applications. This article shows a modified Angstrom model to estimate solar radiation in northwestern Mexico (southwest United States). The algorithm developed here for the prediction of solar radiation is based on the Angstrom model, along with a historical database and polynomial regression models. One of the final applications of the regression models is to simulate the performance of photovoltaic installations and solar collectors in the Ciudad Juárez region. This document presents the simulation of a polycrystalline cell applying the regression models of solar radiation obtained. Finally, we perform a statistical analysis between the estimated model and the reference data from the Mean Square Error (RMSE).

Este estudo exploratório examina elementos normativos presentes em textos brasileiros sobre comunicação no serviço público. Analisamos dois conjuntos de documentos: de um lado, políticas de comunicação de instituições públicas e propostas de códigos de ética profissional; de outro, estudos de autores de referência e pesquisas apresentadas em eventos recentes. Identificamos valores ligados à promoção da democracia e da cidadania, que se articulam a valores profissionais do campo da comunicação pública, especialmente do jornalismo público, como isenção e pluralismo. Na análise, identificamos uma contraposição entre esses valores – tanto os democráticos como os profissionais – e valores que são apresentados como interesses externos, seja da imprensa comercial, seja, de outros integrantes da instituição que não os profissionais de comunicação – por exemplo, parlamentares, dirigentes e gestores de instituições públicas.

Abstract Currently, the metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) is the subject of several lines of research in the context of neurology and is of high interest as a target for positron-emission tomography (PET). Here, we assessed the feasibility of using [11C]ABP688, a specific antagonist radiotracer for an allosteric site on the mGluR5, to evaluate changes in glutamatergic neurotransmission through a mismatch-negativity (MMN) task as a part of a simultaneous and synchronized multimodal PET/MR-EEG study. We analyzed the effect of MMN by comparing the changes in nondisplaceable binding potential (BPND) prior to (baseline) and during the task in 17 healthy subjects by applying a bolus/infusion protocol. Anatomical and functional regions were analyzed. A small change in BPND was observed in anatomical regions (posterior cingulate cortex and thalamus) and in a functional network (precuneus) after the start of the task. The effect size was quantified using Kendall’s W value and was 0.3. The motor cortex was used as a control region for the task and did not show any significant BPND changes. There was a significant ΔBPND between acquisition conditions. On average, the reductions in binding across the regions were - 8.6 ± 3.2% in anatomical and - 6.4 ± 0.5% in the functional network (p ≤ 0.001). Correlations between ΔBPND and EEG latency for both anatomical (p = 0.008) and functional (p = 0.022) regions were found. Exploratory analyses suggest that the MMN task played a role in the glutamatergic neurotransmission, and mGluR5 may be indirectly modulated by these changes.

The well-being of older Europeans is of increasing importance given the substantialageing of the population. This paper comprehensively analyses well-being forthe population aged 50+ in 26 European countries, using the newly proposedindicator “Years of Good Life” (YoGL), which measures the remaining yearsof life that an individual can expect to live in a “good” state. The indicatorenables the decomposition of well-being into various dimensions, thereby revealingimportant heterogeneities between regions and genders. Results show that numbersof YoGL at age 50 vary considerably between European countries. They are highestin Northern and Western European countries and lowest in Central and EasternEuropean countries, where many “good” years are lost due to low life satisfaction.Interestingly, the high life expectancy levels in Southern Europe do not translate intohigher numbers of YoGL, mainly due to the low levels of physical and cognitivehealth in this region. While women and men can expect to have similar numbersof YoGL, women are likely to spend a smaller proportion of their longer remaininglifetime in a good state. These results demonstrate the importance of using wellbeingindicators that consider population heterogeneity when measuring humanwell-being, especially for older populations.
