Abstract

Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for nu(tau) charged current interactions followed by the tau lepton decay into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation. A sample of 6844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the selection criteria, no tau(-) candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search fur nu(tau) interactions using the muonic decay mode (36182 events with an identified muon), a 90% C.L. limit on the mixing angle sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 1.8.10(-3) (at large Delta m(2)) has been derived. Abstract

We searched for the H-dibaryon resonance in the ΛΛ invariant mass spectrum obtained by 12C(K −, K + ΛΛX) reactions using a scintillating fiber active target. We observed enhanced ΛΛ production near the threshold, as found in a previous KEK experiment, with improved statistics. Data were compared with the results of a cascade model calculation including ΛΛ final state interactions consistent with the recently measured binding energy of the double-Λ hypernucleus. No significant enhancements above the levels predicted by the model were observed. The upper limit for the production cross section of the H-dibaryon with a mass range between the ΛΛ and ΞN threshold is found to be 2.1 μb/sr at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment is based on the use of the Emulsion Cloud Chamber (ECC). In the OPERA ECC, nuclear emulsion films acting as very high precision tracking detectors are interleaved with lead plates providing a massive target for neutrino interactions. We report on studies related to the effects occurring from the contact between emulsion and lead. A low radioactivity lead is required in order to minimize the number of background tracks in emulsions and to achieve the required performance in the reconstruction of neutrino events. It was observed that adding other chemical elements to the lead, in order to improve the mechanical properties, may significantly increase the level of radioactivity on the emulsions. A detailed study was made in order to choose a lead alloy with good mechanical properties and an appropriate packing technique so as to have a low enough effective radioactivity., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We have studied ({ital K}{sup {minus}},{ital K}{sup +}) reactions from an emulsion target. The {ital S}={minus}2 {ital H} dibaryon has been searched for by the analysis of the {ital K}{sup +} momentum spectrum together with emulsion data. No evidence of {ital H} production was observed in the mass range of 1.90--2.16 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}. Upper limits for the production cross section of the {ital H} are (0.2--0.6)% of that for the quasifree {Xi}{sup {minus}} production at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

A hybrid apparatus consisting of a movable emulsion target and a magnetic spectrometer was used in a fixed target Fermilab Tevatron experiment to study the production of heavy quarks by high-energy hadron beams. High-resolution silicon microstrip detectors were used for precise tracking in the dense particle environment. Details of the experimental apparatus, including the data acquisition system, are described.

Abstract

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for nu( --> mu(tau) oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract

The H-dibaryon resonance was sought by a {lambda}{lambda} invariant mass spectrum that was obtained by the {sup 12}C (K{sup -},K{sup +}{lambda}{lambda}X) reactions. We observed a bump near the {lambda}{lambda} threshold, as reported by the previous experiment (KEK E224), with better statistics. Data were compared with results of a cascade model calculation including {lambda}{lambda} final state interactions consistent with the newly measured binding energy of {sub {lambda}}{sub {lambda}}{sup 6}He. No significant enhancements above levels of the model predictions were observed. The resulting upper limit for the production cross section of the H with a mass range between the {lambda}{lambda} and {xi}N threshold is found to be 2.1 {+-} 0.6 (stat.) {+-} 0.1 (syst.) {mu}b/sr at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract

The OPERA experiment was designed to search for $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode, i.e. by detecting the $\tau$-leptons produced in charged current $\nu_{\tau}$ interactions. The experiment took data from 2008 to 2012 in the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam. The observation of $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ appearance, achieved with four candidate events in a sub-sample of the data, was previously reported. In this paper, a fifth $\nu_{\tau}$ candidate event, found in an enlarged data sample, is described. Together with a further reduction of the expected background, the candidate events detected so far allow assessing the discovery of $\nu_{\mu}\rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode with a significance larger than 5 $\sigma$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder characterised by degeneration of spinal cord anterior horn cells, leading to muscular atrophy. It is the second most frequent autosomal recessive disease among Caucasian populations with a prevalence of between 1 in 6000 and 1 in 10,000 live births, and a carrier frequency of about 1 in 50. The International SMA Consortium classification defines several types of SMA depending on the age of onset and clinical severity. In the past, the diagnosis of SMA was confirmed by muscle biopsy and, sometimes, electromyography. In 1990, SMA was linked to the 5q13 region of chromosome 5. In 1995, it was found that95% of patients with SMA have homozygous deletions of exons 7 and 8 of the survival motor neurone 1 (SMN1) gene, one of the candidate genes identified within 5q13. The purpose of our study was to determine the frequency of SMN1 deletions in patients with known SMA and the impact of this on the diagnosis of SMA.Molecular analysis was performed on stored DNA and case notes were reviewed retrospectively.Twenty-two (91.7%) out of 24 patients with all types of SMA were homozygously deleted for exons 7 and/or 8 of SMN1. We also report our experience with prenatal diagnosis of SMA.Molecular studies can replace conventional investigations for SMA and have made the option of prenatal diagnosis possible for couples at risk.

Abstract

WOS: 000223122600006 This Letter reports on a study of trimuon events induced by neutrino interactions in the CHORUS calorimeter exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band v(mu) beam. Among the multimuon events produced in the calorimeter, 42 mu(-) mu(-) mu(+) events were selected and their kinematical properties investigated. In the past, several groups collected a sample of about one hundred events of this type but their source was largely unknown. Taking advantage of experimental data presently available on the production and muonic branching ratios of light neutral mesons and resonances, we make absolute predictions for the expected rates in our experiment. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations described in this article show that more than half of the trimuon events can be attributed to this source. Muons from pi- and K- decays in charm dimuon events are responsible for an additional approximate to 25% contribution to the total mu(-)mu(-)mu(+) rate. The remaining 25% of events are likely to come from the internal bremsstrahlung of virtual photons into a muon pair. Associated-charm production with subsequent decays of both charmed particles into muons is a negligible source of trimuon events. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Effects of prolonged habitual cold-water immersion on fibre size and capillarity in vastus lateralis muscle were studied in human beings. The hypothesis tested in the present study was that cold acclimatized human skeletal muscle would have reduced muscle fibre size and higher capillarity, favouring the idea of efficacy of recruitment under cold environment.Ten women breath-hold divers (BHDs) and 10 active women (controls CONs) participated in this study. Muscle biopsy was obtained from vastus lateralis and determined fibre type composition and capillary density.A major finding was that all BHDs revealed a markedly smaller cross-sectional area (CSA) in all fibre types than the CONs, or even than any other morphological data reported in previous investigations. Furthermore, mean CSA of type II fibre (range 1205-2766 microm2) was much smaller than type I fibre (2343-4327 microm2). The number of capillaries per fibre in different fibre types in the BHDs was higher than in the CONs (P0.001), and diffusional area was smaller in type II fibres than in type I fibres (P0.001). The BHDs and the CONs have similarity in the percentage of type I fibres, but type II fibre was predominant in both groups. Interestingly the proportion of type IIx fibre in the BHDs was higher (31%) than in the CONs (22%). No significant difference was found in the thigh circumference between the groups.The present study demonstrates that prolonged habitual cold-water immersion may induce a decrease in fibre size and an increase in capillarity in human skeletal muscle.

Abstract

A study of quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons in charged-current interactions of neutrinos with the nuclear emulsion target of CHORUS is presented. In a sample of about 46 000 interactions located in the emulsion, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified by using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based both on the topological and kinematical characteristics of quasi-elastic charm production allowed a clear separation between events of this type and those in which charm is produced in deep inelastic processes. A final sample containing 13 candidates consistent with quasi-elastic production of a charmed baryon with an estimated background of 1.7 events was obtained. At the average neutrino energy of 27 GeV the cross-section for the total quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons relative to the νN charged-current cross-section was measured to be σ(QE)/σ(CC) = (0.23-0.06+0.02(stat)×10-2. Abstract

We report the prevalence and ethnic differences of autosomal-dominant cerebellar ataxia (ADCA) in Singapore. Amongst 204 patients with ataxia who underwent genetic testing for dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) and for spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12, 58 (28.4%) patients from 36 families tested positive. SCA 3 was identified in 31 (53.4%) patients from 15 families, SCA 2 in 17 (29.3%) patients from 12 families and SCA 1 in four (6.9%) patients from four families. Other SCA subtypes were rare. SCA 2 was the only subtype identified amongst ethnic Malay and ethnic Indian families. The estimated prevalence of ADCA in Singaporean families was at least 1 : 27,000. Based on the history and ancestry of Singaporeans, our study supported a founder effect for specific SCA subtypes and the association of ethnicity-specific SCA subtypes. Our findings suggest that SCA 2 is relatively common amongst the Malay race and that priority testing for SCA 3 and SCA 2 for ethnic Chinese, and SCA 2 for ethnic Malay, may be cost effective and relevant for the region.

Abstract

We report on a search for associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions in the CHORUS experiment, based on the visual observation of charmed-particle decays. The search differs from those carried out so far in which the production of cc has been inferred from measurements of events with two or three muons in the final state, resulting from the decay of charmed hadrons. Abstract

During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the Wide Band Neutrino Beam from the CERN-SPS. About 170 000 neutrino interactions were successfully located in the emulsion. Improvements in the automatic emulsion scanning systems and application of different criteria allowed the sample of located events to be used for studies of charm production. We present a measurement of the production rate of D 0 mesons based on a sample of 25 693 located v μ charged-current (CC) interactions analysed so far. After reconstruction of the event topology in the vertex region, 283 D 0 decays were observed with an estimated background of 9.2 K 0 and Λ decays. The ratio of cross-section of D 0 production and v μ CC interactions is found to be (1.99 ± 0.13(stat.) ± 0.17(syst.)) × 10 -2 at 27 GeV average v μ energy. © 2002 Elsevier Science B. V. Abstract

During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the CERN-SPS Wide Band Neutrino Beam. The improvements of the past few years in the automatic emulsion scanning systems allowed a sample of events located in emulsion to be used for studies of charm production. Based on a sample of 56172vμu charged-current interactions analysed so far, we find a value of Bμ = 0.093 ± 0.009(stat.) ± 0.009(syst.) for the semi-leptonic branching fraction of charm hadrons. The result for events with visible energy larger than 30 GeV, Bμ = 0.102 ± 0.016(stat.) ± 0.010(syst.), can be combined with the existing measurements of the dimuon rate to yield a value of 0.219 ± 0.022 for the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element \Vcd\. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

A double-hyperfragment event has been found in a hybrid-emulsion experiment. It is identified uniquely as the sequential decay of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ emitted from a ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ hyperon nuclear capture at rest. The mass of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction energy $\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ have been measured for the first time devoid of the ambiguities due to the possibilities of excited states. The value of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ is $1.01\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.20}_{\ensuremath{-}0.11}^{+0.18}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$. This demonstrates that the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction is weakly attractive.

Abstract

A double-hyperfragment event has been found in a hybrid-emulsion experiment. It is identified uniquely as the sequential decay of ( 6)(LambdaLambda)He emitted from a Xi(-) hyperon nuclear capture at rest. The mass of ( 6)(LambdaLambda)He and the Lambda-Lambda interaction energy DeltaB(LambdaLambda) have been measured for the first time devoid of the ambiguities due to the possibilities of excited states. The value of DeltaB(LambdaLambda) is 1.01+/-0.20(+0.18)(-0.11) MeV. This demonstrates that the Lambda-Lambda interaction is weakly attractive.

Abstract

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder characterised by chorea and progressive dementia. The mutation causing the disease has been identified as an unstable expansion of a trinucleotide (CAG)n. We have assessed the (CAG)n repeats in the patients and controls in our population.Polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) for the repeat region were carried out for 116 individuals: 10 were asymptomatic at-risk members from 5 families; 53 symptomatic patients from various hospitals; and 53 normal unrelated Singaporeans. Estimation of the number of repeats was based on Metaphor gel electrophoresis, sizing using the GeneScan on ABI 310 Genetic Analyzer, and sequencing using the same equipment.Metaphor gel sizing generally gives an over-estimation, and GeneScan gives an under-estimation of repeat numbers compared with sequencing which is the gold standard. Of the 63 patients and family members tested, 25 had one expanded allele of 40 to 54 CAG repeats and the other allele in the normal range of 15 to 30 repeats. One patient had an allele in the intermediate range (38).The range of CAG repeats in the normal and HD alleles in our population is similar to those reported elsewhere. An accurate sizing can only be obtained with sequencing. For allele sizes in the intermediate range (37-40), sequencing should be carried out to confirm the carrier status of a patient.

Using a prompt neutrino beam in which a nu_tau component was identified for the first time, the nu_tau magnetic moment was measured based on a search for an anomalous increase in the number of neutrino-electron interactions. Abstract

A hybrid emulsion experiment E373 at KEK has been carried out to study doubly strange nuclear system. By the 8% data analysis of all, one twin single-Λ hypernuclei event and two events of double-Λ hypernucleus have been successfully detected. The twin single-Λ event is uniquely interpreted as Ⅺ−+14N→Λ5He+Λ5He+4He+n for the first time. In the first double-Λ hypernucleus event, “Demachi-Yanagi,” it is interpreted as Ⅺ−+12C→ΛΛ10Be* (or ΛΛ10Be*)+t. The second double-Λ hypernucleus event, “NAGARA,” shows a clearly recognized topology and the interpretation is unique as Ⅺ−+12C→ΛΛ6He+4He+t, ΛΛ6He→Λ5He+π−+p, Λ5He→p+d+2n etc. By the preliminary result of the ΛΛ6He, the attractive ΛΛ interaction has been confirmed with the ΔBΛΛ∼1 MeV.

Abstract

The effect of piggery temperature on daily live-weight gain of triple cross Large White-Duroc pigs was studied. Weaning rate and fattening completion rates were similar among piglets born in different seasons of the year but the average daily weight gain was slower during the early (20 to 40 kg live weight) and intermediate (40 to 60 kg live weight) periods of fattening in the autumn-born group (T < 0·05) whilst during the late period (60 to 80 kg live weight) slower growth rates were found in the summer- and winter-born groups (P > 0·05). In the intermediate period the fastest growth rates (900 g/day) were recorded at piggery temperatures of 16 to 20°C. In the same period the slowest growth rates (602 g/day) were recorded at temperatures of 8°C or lower and at 24°C or higher. The daily live-weight gain during the intermediate period was shown to be related to piggery temperature in a curvilinear manner according to the equation Y = −2·48x2 + 90·44x + 25·37.

Abstract

Plasmin, a broad spectrum proteinase, is inactivated by an autoproteolytic reaction that results in the destruction of the heavy and light chains of the protein. Recently we demonstrated that a 61-kDa plasmin fragment was one of the major products of this autoproteolytic reaction (Fitzpatrick, S. L., Kassam, G., Choi, K. S., Kang, H. M., Fogg, D. K., and Waisman, D. M. (2000)Biochemistry 39, 1021-1028). In the present communication we have identified the 61-kDa plasmin fragment as a novel four kringle-containing protein consisting of the amino acid sequence Lys(78)-Lys(468). To avoid confusion with the plasmin(ogen) fragment, angiostatin(R) (Lys(78)-Ala(440)), we have named this protein A(61). Unlike angiostatin, A(61) was produced in vitro from plasmin autodigestion in the absence of sulfhydryl donors. A(61) bound to lysine-Sepharose and also underwent a large increase in fluorescence yield upon binding of the lysine analogue, trans-4-aminomethylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid. Circular dichroism suggested that A(61) was composed of 21% beta-strand, 14% beta-turn, 18% 3(1)-helix and 8% 3(10)-helix. A(61) was an anti-angiogenic protein as indicated by the inhibition of bovine capillary endothelial cell proliferation. Plasminogen was converted to A(61) by HT1080 cells and bovine capillary endothelial cells. Furthermore, a plasminogen fragment similar to A(61) was present in the serum of humans as well as normal and tumor-bearing mice. These results establish that plasmin turnover can generate anti-angiogenic plasmin fragments in a nonpathological setting.

Abstract

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for ν μ → ν τ oscillation, has been successlly constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract

In the OPERA experiment, so-called Scan Back method is used to locate neutrino interaction vertices in the emulsion target named ECC (Emulsion Cloud Chamber). In Scan Back method, tracks detected in the most downstream emulsion plate in ECCs are followed to upstream plate by plate until it reaches to the interaction points. In order to treat a number of neutrino interactions recorded in OPERA, dedicated systems called Plate Changer has been developed and utilized to neutrino event location in Japan. The details of the system have been described in this report. Until the end of November 2012, 6223 Scan Back trials have been performed using this system, and strongly contributed to the detection of tau neutrino appearance.

Abstract

Amorphous carbon/graphite interface is modeled by molecular dynamic simulation using a Tersoff-type potential function with the Brenner parameters for in-plane interaction combined with the pair potential function for the interplanar bonding. The interface is created by compressing the amorphous carbon produced in a separate simulation with perfect crystalline graphite terminated to expose (1120) planes. The planar structure and weak interplanar bonding allow the graphitic planes to deform in order to accommodate the bonds formed at the interface, which is consistent with the HRTEM study of the interface. The simulation indicates that the generated interface mostly consists of nearly sp2 hybridized bonding connecting the two sides. The bonds across the interface when formed are likely to maintain their equilibrium configurations. Due to the large interplanar spacing, many atoms both on the graphite and a-C sides are left unbonded leaving the interface energetically unfavorable with respect to the bulk. These unbonded radicals probably weaken the structural rigidity of the interface providing a fracture path under stress.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino experiment in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the vμ→ v τ channel, the v τ signature being the identification of the τ -lepton created in its charged current interaction. The hybrid apparatus consists of a large mass emulsion film/lead target complemented by electronic detectors. Placed in the LNGS, it is exposed to the high-energy long-baseline CERN Neutrino beam to Gran Sasso (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. The observation of a first v τ candidate event was reported in 2010. In this paper, we discuss the result of the analysis of the data taken during the first two years of operation (2008-2009) underlining the major improvements brought to the analysis chain and to the Monte Carlo simulations. The statistical significance of the one event observed so far is then evaluated to 95%.

Abstract

The DONuT experiment collected data in 1997 and published first results in 2000 based on four observed ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ charged-current (CC) interactions. The final analysis of the data collected in the experiment is presented in this paper, based on $3.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{17}$ protons on target using the 800 GeV Tevatron beam at Fermilab. The number of observed ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ CC events is 9 with an estimated background of 1.5 events, from a total of 578 observed neutrino interactions. We calculate the ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ CC cross section as a function of one parameter. Assuming ${\mathrm{D}}_{\mathrm{s}}$ mesons are the sole source for ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$, the energy-independent part of the total CC cross section can be parametrized as ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{\mathrm{const}}({\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})=2.51{n}^{1.52}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}40}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}\text{ }{\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ for $n\ensuremath{\ge}4$, where $n$ is the parameter controlling the longitudinal part of the ${\mathrm{D}}_{\mathrm{s}}$ differential cross section of the form $d\ensuremath{\sigma}/d{x}_{F}\ensuremath{\propto}(1\ensuremath{-}|{x}_{F}|{)}^{n}$. The analysis could not distinguish between ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ and ${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$. The value of $n$ obtained from Pythia simulations, $n=6.1$, gives an estimated value of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{\mathrm{const}}({\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})=(0.39\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}38}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}\text{ }{\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$.

Abstract

1 Its name was derived from the observation of a fragile site on chromosome Xq27.3, designated FRAXA (fragile site, X chromosome, A site). This syndrome is caused by mutations in the fragile X mental retardation-1 gene (FMR1), more than 95% of which involve hyperexpansion and hypermethylation of a polymorphic CGG trinucleotide repeat in the 59 untranslated region (59UTR) of the gene. 1-4 Among normal individuals, the number of CGG repeats ranges between 6 and 55. In most affected patients, the CGG repeats are massively expanded to over 200 repeats, and the gene becomes methylated at CpG islands and is silenced. Individuals with CGG repeats in the premutation range of 55 to 200 repeats are clinically unaffected, but these repeats are likely to be unstable during transmission to the next generation. 12 This instability depends on the size of the premutation allele and is much more pronounced during maternal transmission. The larger the premutation alleles, the more likely they will be to expand to full mutations. 156

Abstract

LiAl 0 . 1 Mn 1 . 9 O 4 and LiMn 2 O 4 materials were synthesized using LiOH, Al(NO 3 ) 3 , and different Mn sources (Mn 3 O 4 and γ-MnOOH). X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that all prepared materials had identical crystalline phase (cubic, Fd3m). Two materials using the Mn 3 O 4 source exhibited different cycling characteristics depending on the cycling voltage range. However, the two materials using the γ-MnOOH source showed an identical cycling performance in both the 3 and 4 V regions. Transmission electron microscope analysis revealed that the materials using γ-MnOOH consisted of two kinds of structures of cubic and tetragonal in the resulting powders although they were shown as a pure cubic spinel structure in the XRD diagram. This indicated a more stable state for the two Mn-based materials using γ-MnOOH when the transformation from the cubic to tetragonal phase occurred in the 3 V region.

Abstract

Amorphous Co[sub78-x]Mn[subx]B[sub10]Si[sub12] (x = 10, 15, 20, 25) alloys were fabricated using the melt- spinning process in order to study the effect of Mn addition on the crystallization of the Co-rich amorphous alloy. In general, thermal stability of the aniorphous structure was greatly improved by the presence of Mn, delaying the onset of crystallization by 100 °C as the Mn content was increased froni 10 to 25 at. pct. Due to the delay of crystallization, Co[sub53]Mn[sub25]B[sub10]Si[sub12], unlike other compositions, exhibited a uniform grain size distribution, relatively free of any struct;ural defects in the fully devitrified state. It was also found that Co[sub2]MnSi was the first crystalline phase to nucleate in the amorphous matrix and became the increasingly dominant phase in the fully devitrified structure as Mn content was increased. Saturation magnetization of the as-cast alloys decreased with increasing Mn content and eventually becanie paramagnetic at 20 at. pct. During devitrification, all of the studied alloys became ferromagnetic from nucleation of Co[sub2]MnSi and Co. The magnetic transition temperatures correlated well to the observed changes in the microstructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Observation of J/? production by neutrinos in the calorimeter of the CHORUS detector exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band ?µ beam is reported. A spectrum-averaged cross section ?J/? = (6.3 ± 3.0) × 10-41 cm2 is obtained for 20 GeV ? E? ? 200 GeV.
