Une nouvelle méthode de détermination des marbres blancs est proposée : la cathodoluminescence quantifiée sur 3 mg de poudre comprimée, ce qui évite les effets d’orientation et réalise une moyenne sur un volume plus important. Chaque particularité de cette méthode est expliquée et justifiée. Une revue rapide des applications de la cathodoluminescence en géologie et minéralogie est présentée. Pratiquée conjointement à l’étude pétrographique et à l’analyse des isotopes stables, cette méthode permet de remonter au lieu d’extraction des pièces sculptées en marbre blanc, pour peu que l’on ait eu soin d’en constituer une collection de référence suffisante. Comme application nous décrivons le gisement de Marbre de Céret ou « Blanc de Carol ». Ce marbre a été largement employé dans les églises et les cloîtres médiévaux de la Catalogne française. Pendant les XIe et XIIe siècles, principalement, les portails des églises ont été construits avec ce marbre (Saint-Génis-des-Fontaines, Saint-André-de-Sorède, Brouilla, Le Boulou, Saint-Feliu-d’Amont, Sainte-Marie-del-Vilar, Monastir-del-Camp, Saint-Jean-le-Vieux à Perpignan). Pendant les trois cents ans de construction du cloître d’Elne, le Marbre de Céret a toujours été employé. La période gothique est marquée par un renouveau de l’Art catalan avec l’édification des cloîtres d’Arles-sur-Tech et du Monastir-del-Camp. Ce marbre a même été exporté en Languedoc dans le cloître de Fontfroide. Avec le marbre rouge du Conflent, le marbre de Céret est l’une des plus belles pierres décoratives du Roussillon. Used together the petrofabric study and the stables isotopes analysis, this method permits to find the quarry where was extracted the stone which was carved, if you have enough references. Like example, we describe the Céret marble (Roussillon Region). Numerous great medieval churches and cloisters are decorated with Céret Marble, named also “Blanc de Carol”. During XIth and XIIth centuries, especially doorways are frequently built with this white marble (Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines, Saint-Andre-de-Sorede, Brouilla, Le Boulou, Saint-Feliu-d’Amont, Sainte-Marie-del-Vilar, Monastir-del-Camp, Saint-Jean-le-Vieux in Perpignan churches). During three hundred years, the Céret Marble has been used to Elne cloister. The Gothic period corresponding to a renewal of regional Art, is characterized by Arles-sur-Tech and Monastir-del-Camp cloisters. This marble were also exported to Languedoc Region (Fontfroide cloister). With the red Conflent Marble, the white Céret Marble is the most beautiful decorative stones in Roussillon Region.

Les auteurs de cet ouvrage “ Pierre et Archéologie ”, issu du Colloque international qui s’est tenu à Tautavel (14-15 mai 1998) veulent attirer l’attention sur les nombreux aspects de l’utilisation de la pierre par l’Homme depuis la Préhistoire, et les difficultés pour comprendre et expliquer son identification, son évolution et sa conservation. Mise à part l’utilisation lointaine de la pierre par l’homme préhistorique pour assurer sa survie, il reste le domaine très vaste, plus récent dans le temps, de la pierre de taille utilisée par les hommes. Déjà les gallo-romains se sont servis des pierres dites « du midi » pour des constructions que nous connaissons bien. Mais la pierre n’est pas réservée seulement aux monuments, elle fait partie de la vie quotidienne. En dehors des grands édifices, de nombreuses habitations sont bâties en pierre et souvent leur sol est pavé de pierres. Il y a aussi l’amour de la pierre tout simplement, pour le beau, le toucher : c’est par exemple la sculpture qui agrémente les monuments et même les habitations. Les sarcophages en marbre blanc, sculptés entre la fin de l’Antiquité classique et le Haut Moyen-Age, dont le problème de l’origine est traité dans cet ouvrage, montrent bien la diversité des aspects artistiques que l’Homme a su exploiter. L’ensemble des contributions présentées apporte des données originales sur les méthodes et techniques modernes utilisées pour contribuer à mieux comprendre l’évolution culturelle et artistique de l’humanité, le devenir de la pierre extraite et la restauration des monuments. Ceci montre une fois de plus la nécessité d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire, seule démarche pour assurer la protection et la pérennité de tout ce qui touche notre patrimoine.

38th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 915-922, The estimation of the annual solar resource at a given location is a crucial part of the financing of new photovoltaic power plants. The standard practice is to use satellite-derived databases of ground irradiance estimations. Although these databases have a long-term history that properly captures the climatological variations of a given site, they are not calibrated with ground measurements and therefore may suffer from significant biases. In this paper, we focus on Western Europe and propose to use ground measurements of global horizontal irradiation (GHI) combined with a Kernel Density Mapping algorithm to calibrate several satellite databases (Solargis, HelioClim-3 and CAMS Radiation); we then show that their biases can be reduced from roughly ±3 % down to 0.5 %. More importantly, we perform a sensitivity analysis on the minimal amount of ground measurements required to perform a proper calibration and show that 12 months is the perfect duration to achieve optimal calibration performance. Additionally, we compare the calibration performance on several different satellite databases and show that a combination of several databases can lead to lower overall uncertainty.

The rapid growth of solar power generation and the variable nature of the solar resource pose challenges for our electricity grids. Forecasting future changes in the irradiance might help to cost-efficiently manage this variability both for photovoltaic and concentration solar plants as well as grids with high solar penetrations. So far, for shortest-term forecasts with lead times of a few minutes, all-sky imager based nowcasting systems are used. However, due to the complexity of dynamically changing 3d cloud shapes as well as certain geometrical effects such as self-occlusion or near-horizon saturation, all-sky imager based nowcasting systems exhibit inherent weaknesses. Here, we present a novel system to generate shortest-term solar forecasts, which is located at Plataforma Solar de Almería in southern Spain. This approach is based on downward-facing cameras (shadow cameras), taking images of the ground. From these images, spatially resolved irradiance maps are derived. By tracking cloud shadows, future irradiances are predicted. A demonstration system is achieved, which provides shortest-term forecasts for the next 2 min. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such a system is developed. We benchmark several possible algorithmic approaches on 16 days and compare the deviations to a state-of-the-art all-sky imager based nowcasting system on 22 days. The root-mean-squared deviation (RMSD) of this shadow camera based nowcasting system for direct normal irradiance (DNI) and 1‑min temporal averages is 15.6 % for lead times of 2 min (MAD, DNI: 9.6 %). In comparison to an all-sky imager system, this is an improvement as the all-sky imager system only reaches 22.0 % RMSD and 14.8 % MAD (both DNI). This demonstrates the feasibility and attractiveness in terms of accuracy of the proposed concept.

National audience; Le développement du photovoltaïque (PV) sur toitures ou ombrières, notamment en zone urbaine, est intéressant car ces systèmes énergétiques permettent, sur des surfaces déjà anthropisées comme les toits de bâtiments ou les parkings, une production électrique renouvelable à faible coût, au plus près des lieux de consommation, et sans émission de polluants ni de gaz à effet de serre (GES) lors de leurs fonctionnements.

François Bayrou, Hautcommissaire au plan, puis d'une deuxième partie de 25 pages venant étayer et préciser la première partie.L’objet de cette note n’est pas de prendre position pour ou contre le nucléaire ou même de mener une revue critique complète de ce rapport, mais d’y contribuer, en mettant en exergue des éléments hélas contestables, voire factuellement inexacts, de ce dernier, relevant de notre champ d’expertise sur les impacts environnementaux des énergies renouvelables ainsi que sur l’énergie solaire.

Since 2011, massive stranding of the brown algae Sargassum has regularly affected the coastal waters of the West Caribbean, Brazil, and West Africa, leading to heavy environmental and socio-economic impacts. Ocean color remote sensing observations as performed by sun-synchronous satellite sensors such as MODIS (NASA), MERIS (ESA), or OLCI (ESA/Copernicus) are used to provide quantitative assessments of Sargassum coverage through the calculation of indices as the Alternative Floating Algae Index (AFAI). Sun-synchronous sensors usually provide at best one daytime observation per day of a given oceanic area. However, such a daily temporal revisit rate is not fully satisfactory to monitor the dynamics of Sargassum aggregation due to their potentially significant drift over the course of the day as a result of oceanic currents and sea surface wind stress. In addition, the sun glint and the presence of clouds limit the use of low earth orbit observations, especially in tropical zones. The high frequency sampling provided by geostationary sensors can be a relevant alternative approach in synergy with ocean color sun-synchronous sensors to increase the temporal resolution of the observations, thus allowing efficient monitoring of Sargassum dynamics. In this study, data acquired by a geostationary satellite sensor located at 36,000 km from Earth, namely GOES-16 (NASA/NOAA), which was primarily designed for meteorology applications, are analyzed to investigate the Sargassum dynamics. The results demonstrate that a GOES-16 hourly composite product is appropriate to identify Sargassum aggregations using an index commonly used for vegetation monitoring, namely NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). It is also shown that GOES hourly observations can significantly improve the simulated drift obtained with a transport circulation model, which uses geostrophic current, wind, and waves. This study thus highlights the significant relevance of the effective synergy between sun-synchronous and geostationary satellite sensors for characterizing the Sargassum dynamics. Such a synergy could be summarized as follows: (i) A sun-synchronous sensor enables accurate Sargassum detection and quantitative estimates (e.g., fractional coverage) through AFAI Level-2 products while (ii) a geostationary sensor enables the determination of the displacement features of Sargassum aggregations (velocity, direction).

Une sélection d’une trentaine d’œuvres sculptées en marbre blanc trouvées dans le Rhône à Arles a été échantillonnée et étudiée dans le but d’identifier la provenance du marbre. Les pièces analysées qui ont été datées de différentes époques, s’avèrent être constituées de marbres blancs de diverses provenances. On constate une nette prédominance du marbre de Carrare (Lunense) avec une dizaine d’œuvres réalisées dans ce matériau. Les carrières d’Asie Mineure (Dokimeion, Aphrodisias, Proconnèse) et du Mont Pentéli sont aussi largement représentées. D’autres origines (îles de Thasos et Naxos) ne sont représentées que par quelques exemplaires. A selection of thirty sculptures in white marble that were found in the Rhône River was sampled and studied in order to identify the marble provenance. The analysed items which are dated to various periods, are in fact constituted of marbles from very different provenances. Carrara marble is predominant with ten sculptures made with this material. The quarries from Asia Minor (Dokimeion, Aphrodisias, Proconnesos) and Mount Penteli are also widely represented. Other origins (Thasos and Naxos islands) are identified on very few pieces.

Cet ouvrage réunit les résultats de deux manifestations complémentaires : d’une part, la table ronde intitulée « Rendre à César », organisée le mercredi 20 juin 2012, à Paris, au Musée du Louvre et, d’autre part, les « Rencontres autour de la sculpture romaine conservée en France » qui ont eu lieu du 18 au 20 octobre 2012 au Musée départemental Arles antique. La richesse des interventions lors de ces deux manifestations permet de restituer un ouvrage composé de trente-huit articles, répartis en trois parties et une conclusion. La première partie, en écho et en développement de la table ronde du Louvre, porte sur le portrait du « César du Rhône », aussi bien que sur « Le portrait romain en Gaule ». La deuxième partie publie cinq études autour des « nouvelles techniques d’investigations scientifiques » et présente l’analyse des matériaux des sculptures en pierre et en bronze, découvertes dans le Rhône à Arles, ainsi qu’une étude ethnoarchéologique sur les techniques de production du portrait. Enfin une troisième partie présente les « découvertes récentes et les nouvelles recherches », déclinées en seize études qui sont consacrées à des études de cas (Autun, Vaison-la-Romaine, Nîmes, Metz-Divodurum, Apt), ainsi qu’à des relectures novatrices de sculptures méconnues (Plouarzel, Langres, Avignonet-Lauragais, Vernègues, vallée de l’Ubaye, Besançon, Lyon). Robert Turcan signe la conclusion. Ainsi, « La sculpture romaine en Occident. Nouveaux regards » reflète la variété et l’intérêt des questionnements actuels dans ce domaine.

Solar energy has become a key technology in the renewable energy transition. Particularly, the decrease in the cost of solar technologies has led to increasing investments and significant penetration into energy systems. This has, in turn, led to a greater need for reliable and accurate solar resource data. Fortunately, there has been a great effort in advancing the state of the art of solar resource assessment, including enhanced solar radiation models and more accurate solar resource datasets. While these research advances are published in great detail in scientific journals, a large gap is left in the path to widespread adoption by the scientific community and industry. The high complexity of these new methods and models often means that they are, in practice, only available to a small group of experts. To that end, Assessing Solar presents a practical guide to solar resource assessment using the Python programming language. The guide consists of several sections on different topics, which are organized by theme. Each section provides best practices and includes several examples on how to apply the methods to real-life applications, allowing users to understand the code and, with minimal effort, modify it to fit their own applications. The content is written in the Jupyter Notebook format, allowing for an interactive experience and seamless integration of computational content, figures, equations, text, references, and more.
