An interaurally out-of-phase tone added to a diotic narrow-band noise can be detected based on the interaural cues it creates. Accounts for such NoSπ detection thresholds have been made based on cross-correlation models, Equalization Cancellation models, and on models that evaluate the fluctuations of interaural phase differences (IPDs) caused by the addition of the signal. When the complete NoSπ stimulus is interaurally delayed [referred to as (NoSπ)τ], detection thresholds have been found to increase gradually. In cross-correlation-based models this is attributed to the ability to evaluate the interaural cross correlation at a compensatory delay which has increased internal noise. At the same time, accounts based on IPD processing also predict increased detection thresholds with increasing delays of the (NoSπ)τ stimulus. This results from variations in instantaneous frequency of the delayed narrow-band noise alone which will convert the applied constant time delay into fluctuating IPDs. The goal of the present study was to contribute new data that may have the potential to distinguish between the competing approaches for modeling binaural detection. The main idea was to perform binaural detection experiments for noise maskers with highly different statistics which affect the statistics of the discussed binaural detection cues in different ways. In this study we present data obtained with three different types of noise maskers centered at 500 Hz and having a bandwidth of 80 Hz. Those maskers differ in terms of both their instantaneous frequency and their envelope properties. Binaural detection was measured using the (NoSπ)τ configuration with 11 values of τ ranging from 0 to 3 ms. Gaussian noise, single-multiplied noise, and low-noise noise were employed. Assuming cross-correlation based detection the change in correlation as a function of signal level would be highly similar for all three masker types. In contrast, strong differences exist in the distribution of IPDs when an interaural delay in the stimulus is introduced. Results showed that a cross-correlation based model yielded predictions that corresponded quite well with the behavioral thresholds. In contrast, similar success in accounting for the behavioral data was not observed when a model based on IPD distributions was employed. International audience; Through a review of the current literature, this chapter defines a methodology for the analysis of HRTF localisation performance, as applied to assess the quality of an HRTF selection or learning program. A case study is subsequently proposed, applying this methodology to a cross-comparison on the results of five contemporary experiments on HRTF learning. The objective is to propose a set of steps and metrics to allow for a systematic assessment of participant performance (baseline, learning rates, foreseeable performance plateau limits, etc.) to ease future inter-study comparisons.

EMPTY ROOM Electroacoustic composition in virtual 3D space. Exploration and studies about new compositionnal and spatial techniques in a virtuel 3D space. Abstract : Our thesis shows how, by combining the techniques of stereoscopic immersive virtual reality, with those of electroacoustic music, and by proposing a topological approach to spatialization, due to the integration of a high-order ambisonic spatializer in our process of spatialization, it is possible to manipulate a three-dimensional sound space in VR immersion.To verify our hypothesis we go through creation, from the artwork Empty Room. First, we show how our experience of shared online virtual worlds, as well as the first attempts at immersive 3D composition that we conducted there, led us to the development of the Empty Room project. Secondly, we present the four spatialization experiments in VR immersion that we have carried out. We show how the spatialization mapping of Empty Room, which was specifically designed for virtual reality, will evolve when going from 2D audio to 3D audio. And how this passage allowed us to carry out two related experiments which are the transpositions of BiPan TransPan scenes towards virtual reality as well as the transposition of the Motus acousmonium. Our latest experience, the VR Auditory Space project, lays the groundwork for an immersive 3D spatialization interface based on Ambisonic 3D and Binaural spatialization techniques. At the end of the experiments, we present two deliverables, the Empty Room 2019 version and the VRAS version. 1.0.. Pour vérifier notre hypothèse nous passons par la création à partir de l'œuvre artistique Empty Room. Dans un premier temps nous exposons comment notre expérience des mondes virtuels partagés en ligne, ainsi que les premières tentatives de composition immersives 3D que nous y avons menées, nous ont conduit jusqu'à l'élaboration du projet Empty Room. Dans un deuxième temps, nous exposons les quatre expériences de spatialisation en immersion VR que nous avons menées. Nous montrons comment le mapping de spatialisation d'Empty Room, qui a été spécifiquement conçu pour la réalité virtuelle, va évoluer lors du passage de l'audio 2D vers l'audio 3D. Et comment ce passage nous a permis de procéder à deux expériences connexes que sont les transpositions de scènes BiPan TransPan vers la réalité virtuelle ainsi que la transposition de l'acousmonium Motus. Notre dernière expérience, le projet VR Auditory Space, pose les jalons d'une interface de spatialisation 3D immersive en s'appuyant sur les techniques de spatialisation Ambisonique 3D et Binaurales. Nous présentons ensuite deux livrables, la version Empty Room 2019 et la version du VRAS. 1.0. La troisième partie de notre recherche interroge la possibilité d'un espace instrument dans un espace instrumentalisé VR immersif à partir du rapport que nous entretenons avec le virtuel et la virtualisation dans nos pratiques audionumériques.

The perceptual experience of the transition between coupled rooms remains a little investigated area of research. This paper presents a pipeline for auralising the transition between coupled rooms, utilising a time-varying partitioned convolution for fast position-dependent switching between spatial room impulse responses (SRIRs) and parametric binaural rendering over highly acoustically transparent headphones, with in-situ calibration to the corresponding real-world acoustics. The system is verified by an in-situ listening test with both real and virtual stimuli, conducted in six degrees-of-freedom virtual reality with three-dimensional visuals from measured room models. Results show that the auralisation is rated as highly natural, equalling the naturalness of the corresponding real world auditory stimuli. This pipeline is therefore appropriate for testing of coupled room transition algorithms and SRIR interpolation techniques, as well as non-in-situ testing.

International audience; Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTF) characterize the scattering of an incident wave by a listener's head. Measurements of these HRTF is a complex process: the required number of positions is generally high, and the measurement setup could induce a specific scattering (not intended). Especially in the proximity of the listener the source distance has an in influence, and the total number of measurement positions could be superior to a thousand. Measurements of dummy heads are easier than measurements of real listeners, because of the simplified control of the position. However, measurement of dummy heads is challenging, several measurements campaign were done in the literature but not directly comparable because of the variability of experimental setups. In this paper, we present the HRTF measurements of five dummy heads using the same experimental setup. In total, 794 source positions mainly in the half-sphere of positive elevations were measured. These dummy heads were all built to approximate an "average listener", and then should be similar. One of these dummy head was a rigid sphere allowing a comparison to the analytical simulation and deduce an estimation of measurement errors.

El presente trabajo se plantea como objetivo principal la conceptualizacion de un recurso de mediacion complementario, novedoso y diferenciador, para el entorno patrimonial del castillo de Cardona, fundamentado en el uso de una herramienta de tipo tecnologico, que emplea el sonido inmersivo (binaural ) como medio de transmision.Para ello se plantean una investigacion historiografica, para determinar nuevos temas interpretativos, una valoracion de la actual museografia y de las posibilidades del entorno. Se crean ambientaciones sugerentes, para que el visitante pueda sentirse protagonista de la experiencia de visita y se configura ademas como un recurso sostenible para el gestor turistico y con un gran potencial comunicativo para la puesta en valor de los elementos patrimoniales. The aim of this research is to create a distinctive new experience-mediating soundscape resource for the Cardona Castle heritage site. The resource uses immersive (binaural) audio as a means of communication and storytelling. The research includes a study of the castle’s history and the surrounding area, in order to identify possible new subject of interest, and an assessment of the exhibits currently offered at the site. The soundscape evokes different moments and situations from history to give visitors a more personal experience of heritage. The tool is intended as a sustainable resource for tourism managers and an effective way of communicating the historical value of heritage sites and artefacts. galegoA museografia inmersiva proporciona un tipo de experiencia centrado na percepcion do visitante, dandolle un papel activo nunha visita patrimonial. En esta edición de los cuadernos de Arte y Tecnología de la UPV/EHU abordamos los aspectos tecnológicos y creativos de una herramienta específica para la creación sonora. El micrófono como sensor que permite la amplificación y registro de la vibración sonora que percibimos es un «transductor analógico», es decir, convierte las ondas sonoras en una equivalente o proporcional señal eléctrica, comparable y análoga a la sensación sonora percibida. Su desarrollo tecnológico a lo largo de los siglos XX y XXI nos ofrece una enorme variedad de comportamientos, sensibilidades, combinaciones y aplicaciones específicas, que explicaremos y aplicaremos a prácticas concretas que nos ofrecerán experiencias propias de las artes sonoras (microfonía de contacto/piezoeléctrica y binaural). La socialización de la tecnología audiovisual, la diversidad y todas sus posibilidades tecnológicas han permitido que ciertos medios adquieran un uso específico y plasticidad suficiente para una aplicación en el arte contemporáneo. El micrófono será una de las principales herramientas que permitan observar, experimentar y utilizar el sonido, como medio y material de creación respectivamente. La audición binaural, como observación del espacio tridimensional que nos rodea, permite escuchar en profundidad y diferenciar el origen de las fuentes sonoras. Es una referencia para la práctica de la espacialidad sonora y que experimentamos a través de un método propio y el proceso de elaboración de una cabeza microfónica para el registro binaural. La microfonía de contacto o piezoeléctrica proporciona la amplificación (registro) de las vibraciones que se producen en los materiales no gaseosos: si la inmensa mayoría de los micrófonos recogen las vibraciones aéreas, los piezoeléctricos exploran las ondas transmitidas en los sólidos e incluso en los líquidos (hidrófonos). Este mundo sonoro interior, a menudo oculto y totalmente imperceptible, es aumentado analógicamente mediante tecnologías electroacústicas muy simples y económicas, que ofreceremos como otra experiencia práctica en este monográfico. Understanding a talker or a message amongst others is a challenging and daily situation occurring in public transport, food court, pub... In such environments, a listener is able to segregate the target speech from the competing sources, so-called maskers, when they are spatially separated thanks to auditory mechanisms that use interaural level and time differences (ILD and ITD) of the signals. These mechanisms are well known as better-ear listening and binaural unmasking, respectively. However, the advantages due to these mechanisms are degraded when a listener suffers from hearing loss so that speech intelligibility can be greatly reduced. The motivation for this PhD is to develop a binaural speech intelligibility model that can account for the effects related to hearing loss in complex, realistic scenarios, including reverberation and competing masking sources. This model would help to better understand what aspects of hearing loss impact speech intelligibility. The project has been structured in three main studies. The first study was about the parametric optimization of a binaural speech intelligibility model for normal-hearing (NH) listeners applied on datasets testing better-ear listening and binaural unmasking in isolation and combination, thus, hearing impairment was discarded in a first place. The model inputs are the speech and masker signals alone. They are decomposed per time frame and frequency band. Then, better-ear listening is modelled by taking the higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between the two ears and the binaural unmasking advantage is estimated using a formula previously developed in the literature. The values are integrated across frequency, averaged across time and summed to provide a binaural ratio that can be compared to speech intelligibility threshold using a scaling method. It must be seen as a deep introduction of the original model that was further developed in the following studies to take into account hearing loss. The second study investigated the influence of hearing loss on better-ear listening. The main outcome was the design of an internal noise level that can account for the individual reduced audibility. The internal noise level is spectrally shaped on the listener’s audiogram and relies on the external stimulus level. In this version, the better-ear SNR is computed using the higher levelbetween internal noise and external masker and the binaural unmasking advantage is computed only if the external signal levels are above the internal noise level at each ear. The model implementation was tested using three experiments from the literature involving NH and hearing-impaired (HI) listeners and varying the spatial separation of the sources, the masker type as well as the sensation level. The last study highlighted the contribution of binaural unmasking for speech intelligibility in noise for both NH and HI listeners. For this purpose, a dataset was collected during the project including ITD sensitivity and speech intelligibility measurements. Speech intelligibility was measured varying the presentation level of the signals, the masker type, the difference in ITD between speech and masker as well as the reverberation of the room. A new model version was developed making the two jitters of the formula computing the binaural unmasking advantage in the model dependent of the external stimulus level. This allows to account for the effect of low presentation level on binaural unmasking for NH listeners., Comprendre un interlocuteur ou un message dans un environnement bruyant est une tâche exigeante et quotidienne ayant lieu dans les transports en commun, les restaurants… Dans ces situations, un auditeur est capable d’améliorer l’intelligibilité du discours cible quand ce dernier est spatialement séparé des sources concurrentes, dit « masqueurs », grâce à des mécanismes auditifs utilisant les différences interaurales de niveaux et de temps des signaux (ILD et ITD). Ces mécanismes sont appelés écoute à la meilleure oreille et démasquage binaural, respectivement. Cependant, ces derniers sont détériorés chez les auditeurs malentendants (HI) à tel point que l’intelligibilité de la parole peut être réduite. La motivation de cette thèse est de développer un modèle de compréhension de la parole dans le bruit pour des normo-entendants (NH) et HI, ainsi permettant de mieux comprendre quels aspects de la perte auditive affectent l’intelligibilité de la parole dans le bruit. La première étude se portait sur l’optimisation paramétrique d’un modèle binaural de la compréhension de la parole dans le bruit pour des NH. Ainsi, l’effet de la perte auditive était écarté dans un premier temps. En entrée, le modèle considère le signal cible et les signaux masquants qui sont ensuite décomposés en pas de temps-fréquence. L’écoute à la meilleure oreille est modélisée en prenant le plus grand rapport signal sur bruit entre les deux oreilles. L’avantage dû au démasque binaural est calculé en utilisant une formule venant de la littérature. Les valeurs obtenues sont intégrées dans le domaine fréquentiel, moyennées dans le domaine temporel et sommées pour obtenir un ratio binaural qui peut être converti en un seuil d’intelligibilité pour ensuite être comparé à des mesures de compréhension de la parole. Cette étude doit être perçue comme une introduction approfondie du modèle qui a servi ensuite à développer une version pour HI. La deuxième étude s’intéresse à l’influence de la perte auditive sur l’écoute à la meilleure oreille. Pour ce faire un niveau de bruit interne a été implémenté pour prendre en compte la réduction d’audibilité chez chaque individu. Le niveau de bruit interne possède le même spectre que celui de l’audiogramme de l’auditeur et il dépend du niveau de bruit externe. Dans cette version de modèle, le rapport signal sur bruit à la meilleure oreille est calculé en considérant le plus grand niveau entre bruit interne et bruit externe. L’avantage dû au démasquage binaural est calculé seulement si les niveaux des signaux externes sont supérieurs aux niveaux de bruit internes. L’implémentation du modèle a été testée en utilisant trois jeux de données de la littérature. La dernière étude porte sur la contribution du démasquage binaural pour l’intelligibilité de la parole chez des NH et HI. Dans ce but, un jeu de donnée a été collecté pendant la thèse incluant une mesure de sensibilité aux ITDs et une mesure de compréhension de la parole. L’intelligibilité de la parole était mesurée en variant le niveau sonore des signaux, le type de masqueur, la différence d’ITD entre cible et masqueur ainsi que le niveau de réverbération dans la salle. Une nouvelle version de modèle a été développée dans le but de prédire l’influence des faibles niveaux sonores sur le démasquage binaural. La modification a consisté à rendre les paramètre de la formule calculant l’avantage dû au démasquage binaural dépendant du niveau sonore externe.

In continuity with other work of the binaural community we believe that spatialized sound can be an effective tool for guiding blind people, including for sports practice.A system for binaural audio guidance must be sufficiently accurate and responsive to be able to take into account every movement of the subject. This has led us to the development and implementation of a real-time localization system and a low-latency binaural spatialization software. Finally, we integrated the whole system into an embedded device.The advanced global satellite navigation techniques (augmented and multi-band) are not always available indoor or in urban environments. This is why we have been working on alternative methods of location and real-time tracking for indoor applications. First of all we have developed a robust real-time calibration and lateration method using an Ultra WideBand beacon network using a Kalman filter (UKF). We have also developed an original localization method using an unmodulated continuous wave Doppler radar array. We showed that it is possible to use the amplitude of the Doppler signal to estimate the distance to a moving object. We have then implemented a particle filter to allow real time localization by hybridization of distance data, measurements of radial Doppler velocity augmented by the heading provided by an inertial unit.In the field of acoustics and binaural audio, we have focused on understanding people's abilities to locate and track sound in motion. To do this we conducted experiments using natural and spatialized sounds using a binaural audio engine. These experiments showed that, on the azimuthal plane, spatialized audio stimuli allow for a localization comparable to natural sounds, even with non-individualized and interpolated HRTFs (head-related transfer function). Moreover, we were able to show that even in the azimuthal plane, the stimuli obtained by HRTF convolution are superior to panning (ITD+ILD) both for fixed and moving sounds. Based on the previous work of the team, we have implemented efficient algorithms for the real-time sound spatialization on embedded platforms with limited resources. For an efficient implementation, this real-time approach implied a thorough understanding of the sources of latency whether they are related to head-tracking or to the audio subsystem of modern operating systems.Finally, we used these localization methods and audio techniques to build a guidance device where a sound source continuously precedes the person to indicate the path to follow. It has been designed in collaboration with visually impaired people, in an iterative process and with an approach focused on the user needs. We then carried out guiding experiments with blind people in conjunction with our associative partners, which made it possible to evaluate different control strategies. We have thus been able to confirm that spatialized sound could constitute an effective tool for guiding blind people, without inducing any penalizing cognitive load, for practicing sports such as walking, running or rollerblading in partial autonomy, including the context of performance., Dans la continuité d’autres travaux de la communauté du son binaural, nous pensons que le son spatialisé peut constituer un outil efficace pour guider des personnes aveugles, y compris pour la pratique sportive.Un système destiné au guidage par audio binaural doit être suffisamment précis et réactif pour pouvoir prendre en compte chaque mouvement du sujet à guider, ce qui a impliqué le développement et la mise en œuvre d’un système de localisation temps réel et d'un logiciel de spatialisation binaural à faible latence. Enfin nous avons intégré l’ensemble dans un dispositif embarqué.Les techniques les plus avancées de navigation globale par satellite (augmenté et multibande) ne sont pas toujours disponibles en intérieur ou en environnement urbain. C’est pourquoi nous avons travaillé sur des méthodes alternatives de localisation et de suivi temps réel pour l’intérieur. Tout d’abord nous avons développé une méthode de calibration et de latération temps réel robuste par réseau de balises Ultra WideBand utilisant un filtre de Kalman (UKF). Nous avons également développé une méthode originale de localisation par réseau de radars Doppler à onde continue non modulée. Nous avons montré qu’il était possible d’utiliser l’amplitude du signal Doppler pour estimer la distance à un objet mobile. Nous avons alors implémenté un filtre particulaire qui permet la localisation en temps réel par hybridation des données de distance, des mesures de vitesse radiale Doppler et du cap fourni par une centrale inertielle.Dans le domaine de l’acoustique et de l’audio binaural, nous avons cherché à mieux comprendre les capacités des personnes à localiser et à suivre un son en mouvement. Pour cela nous avons mené des expériences en utilisant des sons naturels et des sons spatialisés par audio binaural. Nous avons pu montrer, que sur le plan azimutal, les stimuli audio spatialisés permettaient une localisation comparable aux sons naturels, y compris avec les HRTFs (head-related transfer function) non individualisées et interpolées. Par ailleurs, nous avons pu montrer que même sur le plan azimutal, les stimuli obtenus par convolution de HRTFs étaient supérieurs au panning (ITD+ILD) pour les sons fixes et pour les sons en mouvement. En nous appuyant sur les travaux antérieurs de l’équipe, nous avons implémenté des algorithmes efficaces pour la spatialisation sonore temps-réel sur des plateformes embarquées disposant de peu de ressources. Pour une mise en œuvre efficace, cette approche temps-réel a impliqué une compréhension approfondie des sources de latence qu’elles soient liées au head-tracking ou au sous-système audio des systèmes d’exploitation modernes.Finalement nous avons mis en œuvre ces méthodes de localisation et ces techniques audio pour construire un dispositif de guidage où la source sonore précède continuellement la personne pour lui indiquer le chemin à suivre.Il a été conçu en lien avec des personnes déficientes visuelles, dans une démarche itérative et avec une approche centrée sur les besoins utilisateurs. Nous avons alors mené des expériences de guidage avec des personnes aveugles, en lien avec nos partenaires associatifs, qui ont permis d’évaluer différentes stratégies de contrôle. Nous avons ainsi pu confirmer que le son spatialisé pouvait constituer un outil efficace pour guider des personnes aveugles sans induire de charge cognitive pénalisante pour des pratiques sportives comme la marche, la course à pied ou le roller en autonomie partielle, y compris dans un contexte de recherche de performances.

The term "binaural" refers to the field of research dedicated to the understanding and mastering of the mechanisms allowing humans to perceive the spatial origin of sounds. This perception emerges from our ability to detect some specific indices of localisation within our sound environment and these indices, for their part, arise from the interaction of sounds with our body and, more specifically, our ears. To reproduce a sound spatialisation effect with headphones, it is therefore necessary on the one hand to reintroduce these indices and on the other hand to personalise their generation by adapting it to the morphology of the listener.To achieve this, we have imagined an original pro- cess based on the use of a 3D morphable model of the ear and the study of the relationships between morphologies and HRTFs. Here we demonstrate its feasibility by putting it into practice thanks to synthetic databases created for the occasion. This data generation has led us to suggest optimisations for numerical computation of HRTFs and to propose possible improvements to make their sub- jective rendering more reliable.; Le terme « binaural » fait référence au champ de recherche visant à comprendre et maîtriser les mécanismes permettant à l’être humain de percevoir l’origine spatiale des sons. Cette perception émerge de notre faculté à détecter certains indices de localisation au sein de notre environnement sonore et ces indices, quant à eux, naissent de l’interaction des sons avec notre corps et en particulier nos oreilles. Pour reproduire au casque un effet de spatialisation sonore il faut donc d’une part réintroduire ces indices et d’autre part en personnaliser la génération en l’adaptant à la morphologie de l’auditeur.Pour y parvenir nous avons imaginé un procédé original fondé sur l’utilisation d’un modèle déformable 3D d’oreille et l’étude en amont des liens entre morphologies et HRTF. Nous en démontrons ici la faisabilité en le mettant en pratique grâce à des bases de données synthétiques créées pour l’occasion. Cette génération de données nous a par ailleurs amené à proposer des optimisations au calcul numérique d’HRTF et à réfléchir aux améliorations possibles pour en fiabiliser le rendu subjectif.

The work presented in this thesis contributes to the development of new tools that facilitate the design of immersive sound spaces for the production of Virtual Reality contents. More specifically, we aimed to allow the control of spatial impressions : the apparent source width and the sensation of envelopment. To this end, several studies have been conducted to evaluate the perception of room acoustics using a non-individualized binaural rendering of ambisonic sound scenes, which is common in this context. Since immersive contents usually consist of a 360° visual environment and a wide variety of sound sources, the first part of this thesis focuses on the influence of these two components on the perception of room acoustics. The second part addresses the parameterization of Spatial Room Impulse Responses (SRIRs), which are transfer functions that describe the acoustic path between the sound source and the listener. The spatial, temporal and frequency resolutions of SRIRs were studied to seek a possible reduction in the amount of data and thus a better apprehension of the perceptual control, while maintaining spatial and timbral fidelity. The last part focuses on the modification of SRIRs for the control of spatial impressions. In order to evaluate the control of the apparent source width, several spatial transformations were applied to the first-order ambisonic signals used to describe the early reflections of SRIRs. For the control of the sensation of envelopment, a method was proposed using an artificial reverberator that allows the modification of the sound energy amplitudes and decay slopes in several frequency bands and angular sectors.; Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse participent à l'élaboration de nouveaux outils de conception d'un espace sonore pour la production de contenus immersifs. En particulier, ils visent à permettre le contrôle des impressions spatiales : la largeur apparente de source et l'enveloppement. Pour cela, plusieurs études ont été réalisées afin d'évaluer la perception de l'acoustique de salles selon une méthode de reproduction sonore communément employée dans ce contexte : un rendu binaural non-individualisé de scènes sonores encodées en ambisonique. La dernière partie se concentre sur la modification de SRIRs pour le contrôle des impressions spatiales. Afin d'évaluer le contrôle de la largeur apparente de source, plusieurs transformations spatiales ont été appliquées aux signaux ambisoniques d'ordre 1 utilisés pour décrire les premières réflexions d'une SRIR. Une méthode de contrôle de la sensation d'enveloppement a été proposée en utilisant un réverbérateur artificiel qui permet la modification des amplitudes et pentes de décroissance de l'énergie sonore dans plusieurs bandes de fréquence et secteurs angulaires.

El trabajo principal de diseño de sonido se centra en la creación de ambientes sonoros, de efectos sonoros de sala y del tipo de procesamiento sobre la voz a nivel de reverberación y filtrado. Se pretende explorar dos tipos de grabación: Una dedicada exclusivamente a recoger las locuciones de los actores y otra diseñada para que la ambientación sonora acompañe en directo a estos durante su locución. También se realiza un análisis de la eficiencia del trabajo de los actores en ambos tipos de grabación., [EN] This work consists in the sound setting and the post-production of sound stories, starting from their invention and establishment. The main part of the work structured around the sound design is focused on the creation of sound environments, foley and the type of voice processing regarding reverberation and filtering. Two types of recording are explored: One dedicated exclusively to collecting the dialogues of the actors and the other designed with the aim that the sound setting accompanies the actors live during their speech. An analysis is also provided regarding the efficiency of the actor's work in both types of recording.

Ambisonics es un método para la reproducción inmersiva de audio espacial con ventajas técnicas relacionadas con la interactividad y la realidad virtual. Del mismo modo, también se conocen deficiencias en la resolución espacial cuando se utilizan grabaciones de primer orden. Utilizar órdenes superiores corrige estas deficiencias a costa de una mayor complejidad técnica y esfuerzo económico en los micrófonos que se utilizan. Cuando sólo se dispone de material en primer orden, pueden utilizarse estrategias de upmixing para aumentar la resolución espacial y el sweet spot o punto óptimo. Existen diferentes estrategias, y son estas las que se van a evaluar en este proyecto utilizando una esfera completa de 24 altavoces. Dado que las señales de los altavoces pueden convertirse en señales binaurales por medio de altavoces virtuales, las tres estrategias (DirAC, HARPEX y COMPASS) se comparan también reproduciendo las escenas a través de auriculares. Digital communications technologies have developed at an increasingly rapid pace, with the COVID-19 pandemic accelerating its recent adoption. This shift over the last few decades has seen a mass migration online, where utilities like video conferencing software have become essential to entire industries and institutions. This thesis proposes the integration of binaural spatialized audio within a web-based video conferencing platform for distributed conversations. The proposed system builds upon findings on the benefits of spatial audio in video conferencing platforms and is guided by the tenets of telepresence. The developed implementation is based on Jitsi Meet, a robust open-source conferencing system. It localizes participant’s voices through sound spatialization methods provided by the Web Audio API. . This project treads new ground in exploring how localized audio can be conceptualized within an accessible telecommunications platform, proposing a novel integration of HRTF-based binaural spatialization within a standard video conferencing layout. System design and experimental questions used in a technical evaluation and user study are informed from a review of audio and video conference systems found in the literature and commercial market. The system evaluation suggests its viability from a compatibility and performance perspective. Perceptual metrics of cognitive load, social presence, and intelligibility are further investigated by a user study where four remote subjects were asked to engage in a short group discussion on a live deployment of the system. Results find support for improvements across all defined metrics as well as increased opinion scores regarding the preference of conferencing with a spatial audio system.

The present study investigates how diotic and dichotic masked thresholds, in a notched-noise masking paradigm, are affected by activation of the Medial OlivoCochlear (MOC) reflex. Thresholds were obtained for a 500-Hz pure tone diotic or a dichotic signal, S (S0 or Sπ respectively), in the presence of a simultaneous or forward diotic masker (bandpass noise with no notch or a 400-Hz notch). A diotic precursor sound (bandpass noise with a 400- or 800-Hz notch) was presented prior to the signal and masker to activate the MOC reflex. For simultaneous- and forward-masking conditions, the decrease in masked thresholds as a notch was introduced in the masker was larger for the diotic than for the dichotic condition. This resulted in a reduced binaural masking level difference (BMLD) for the masker with a notch. The precursor augmented these two effects. The results indicate that the effect of the precursor, eliciting the MOC reflex, is less pronounced when binaural cues are processed.

International audience; The last decade has seen an increase in academic literature in the humanities and social sciences on the sonic dimension of our world. This chapter asks ‘what’ sounds are of interest to ethnography, ‘why’, and consequently ‘how?’This chapter, like the rest of this Handbook, is dedicated to the thorny issue of methodologies. From a heuristic point of view, a method (i.e. ‘how’) is only worthwhile if it is based on the answers given to the first two questions, ‘what’ and ‘why’. It is important to draw clear distinctions between these three questions, although they often overlap in the complex and varied context of ethnography (at least for ethnographies that are not fettered upstream of the fieldwork by theory and programmatic approach).Therefore, it goes without saying that I cannot suggest a ‘good’ and sound methodology to be used in doing ethnographic research, as it depends on the purposes and the context of the fieldwork; and also, as I think of the senses as interconnected and perceive the environment as a whole, an exclusive sonic modality or category will be avoided.I will give a quick and partial overview of ethnographies that are concerned with sound in order to present my own questions in a more precise and informed way. The journey I propose here does not quite illustrate a categorization that I would come to terms with, it is too incoherent as such, but it is rather a way of bringing about the different methodologies that are, or could be, used in sonic ethnography.; La dernière décennie a vu se multiplier la littérature universitaire en sciences humaines et sociales sur la dimension sonore de notre monde. Ce chapitre pose la question de savoir « quels » sons intéressent l’ethnographie, « pourquoi » et donc « comment ».Ce chapitre, comme le reste de ce manuel, est consacré à l’épineuse question des méthodologies. D’un point de vue heuristique, une méthode (c’est-à-dire le « comment ») n’a de valeur que si elle se fonde sur les réponses données aux deux premières questions, « quoi » et « pourquoi ». Il est important d’établir des distinctions claires entre ces trois questions, bien qu’elles se chevauchent souvent dans le contexte complexe et varié de l’ethnographie (du moins pour les ethnographies qui ne sont pas entravées en amont du terrain par la théorie et une approche programmatique).Par conséquent, il va sans dire que je ne peux pas suggérer la « bonne » et solide méthodologie à utiliser dans la recherche ethnographique, car cela dépend des objectifs et du contexte du travail de terrain ; et aussi, parce que je pense que les sens sont interconnectés et perçoivent l’environnement dans sa totalité, une modalité ou catégorie sonore exclusive sera évitée.Je donnerai un aperçu rapide et partiel des ethnographies qui s’intéressent au son afin de présenter mes propres interrogations de manière plus précise et plus éclairée. International audience; When analyzing the binaural advantage in hearing in multiple source environments we often assume that there is one target source and several interfering sources. This point of view, however, is too simple when reflections of the target sound come into play in reverberant rooms: Reflections are useful when they are temporally close enough to the direct sound or, alternatively, when they are strong enough and limited to a short temporal window which not necessarily has to contain the direct sound. In both cases these reflections can be temporally integrated. On the other hand reflections are detrimental, when they are temporally too widely distributed, so that they cannot be integrated. These complex relationships make reflections a perfect tool for analyzing the complex spatial-temporal interactions that influence the binaural advantage in human speech recognition in complex listening situations. Rennies et al. (2019) measured binaural speech reception thresholds in stationary noise with 86 artificial combinations of early and late speech reflections. Reflections differed in delay time, number, and interaural phase difference. The binaural speech intelligibility model (BSIM) can account for the interactions between binaural processing and temporal integration when it distinguishes between useful and detrimental reflections based on the binaural room impulse response (BRIR). A modified version of BSIM with blind binaural front-end (i.e. without access to the BRIR and without access to the clean speech or clean noise signals) can be used. This blind version of BSIM cancels the detrimental components of the signal by maximizing the speech-like modulations.
