110. Gel-based morphological design of zirconium metal-organic frameworks

Abstract

The ability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to gelate under specific synthetic conditions opens up new opportunities in the preparation and shaping of hierarchically porous MOF monoliths, which could be directly implemented for catalytic and adsorptive applications. In this work, we present the first examples of xero-or aerogel monoliths consisting solely of nanoparticles of several prototypical Zr4+-based MOFs: UiO-66-X (X - H, NH2, NO2, (OH)(2)), UiO-67, MOF-801, MOF-808 and NU-1000. High reactant and water concentrations during synthesis were observed to induce the formation of gels, which were converted to monolithic materials by drying in air or supercritical CO2. Electron microscopy, combined with N-2 physisorption experiments, was used to show that irregular nanoparticle packing leads to pure MOF monoliths with hierarchical pore systems, featuring both intraparticle micropores and interparticle mesopores. Finally, UiO-66 gels were shaped into monolithic spheres of 600 mm diameter using an oil-drop method, creating promising candidates for packed-bed catalytic or adsorptive applications, where hierarchical pore systems can greatly mitigate mass transfer limitations.

Abstract

ZIF-8 is a flexible zeolitic imidazole-based metal−organic framework whose narrow pore apertures swing open by reorientation of imidazolate linkers and expand when probed with guest molecules. This work reports on the crystal size dependency of both structural transitions induced by N2 and Ar adsorption and dynamic adsorption behavior of n-butanol using well-engineered ZIF-8 crystals with identical surface area and micropore volume. It is found that the crystal downsizing of ZIF-8 regulates the structural flexibility in equilibrium adsorption and desorption of N2 and Ar. Adsorption kinetics of n-butanol in ZIF-8 are strongly affected by the crystal size, however, not according to a classical intracrystalline diffusion mechanism. Our results suggest that structural transitions and transport properties are dominated by crystal surface effects. Crystal downsizing increases the importance of such surface barriers.

Abstract

[EN] A vapor phase adsorptive recovery process is proposed as an alternative way to isolate biobutanol from acetone-butanolethanol (ABE) fermentation media, offering several advantages compared to liquid phase separation. The effect of water, which is still present in large quantities in vapor phase, on the adsorption of the organics could be minimized by using hydrophobic zeolites. Shape selective all-silica zeolites CHA and LTA were prepared and evaluated via single component isotherms and breakthrough experiments. These zeolites show an opposite selectivity; adsorption of ethanol was favorable on all-silica CHA, while the LTA topology had clear preference for butanol. The molecular sieving properties of both zeolites allowed to easily eliminate acetone from the mixture. The molecular interaction mechanisms were studied by density functional theory (DFT) simulations. Effect of mixture composition, humidity and total pressure of the vapor stream on the selectivity and separation behavior was investigated. Desorption profiles were studied to maximize butanol purity and recovery. The combination of LTA with CHA type zeolites (Si-CHA or SAPO-34) in sequential adsorption columns with alternating adsorption and desorption steps allows to obtain butanol in unpreceded purity and recovery. A butanol purity of 99.7 mole% could be obtained at nearly complete butanol recovery, demonstrating the effectiveness of this technique for biobutanol separation processes.

Abstract

The functionalization of a well-known MIL-53(Al) metal-organic framework with amino groups is reported. The approach increased selectivity of MOF in C[O.sub.2]/C[H.sub.4] separations by orders of magnitude while still maintaining a very high capacity for C[O.sub.2] capture.

Abstract

The adsorption of C5 to C14 n-alkanes from liquid phase, which leads to high zeolite loading, was studied using CB-GCMC calculations. The mechanism of packing in liquid was studied and the probability of bending and crossing in the intersections increases with chain length, leads to a good packing of long-chain alkanes and short alkanes tend to stay away from the intersections, resulting in a lower packing density.

122. Chromatographic Properties of Minimal Aspect Ratio Monolithic Silica Columns

Abstract

We report on a study wherein we synthesized TMOS-based silica monolithic skeletons in capillaries with an i.d. of 5 and 10 μm to produce skeleton structures with very low capillary-to-domain size aspect-ratios. These structures include the absolute minimal aspect-ratio case of a monolithic structure whose cross-section only contains a single node point. With domain-sized based reduced plate heights running as low as hmin= 1.3–1.5 for retained coumarin dyes providing a retention factor of k= 0.6–1.0, the study confirms the classic observation that ultralow aspect ratio columns generate a markedly lower dispersion than columns with a larger aspect ratio made in the past by Knox, Jorgenson, and Kennedy for the packed bed of spheres, but now for silica monoliths. The course of the reduced van Deemter curves, and more specifically the ratio of A-term versus C-term band broadening, could be interpreted in terms of the width and persistence length of the velocity bias zones in the columns. Considering the overall kinetic performance, it is found that the two best performing structures are also the structures with the lowest number of domains or node points, that is, with the lowest capillary-to-domain size aspect-ratio and, hence, resembling closest to the open-tubular format, which remains confirmed as the column format with the best kinetic performance. This is quantified by the fact that the minimal impedance values (order of Emin= 100) of the best performing ultralow aspect ratio monolithic columns are still significantly larger than the Eminvalues for the reference open-tubular columns (order of Emin= 15–20).

Abstract

The liquid-phase adsorption of aromatics, alkenes, and alkanes on Na-containing faujasites with different Si is to Al ratios, 1.20 (NaX) and 2.79 (NaY), are studied and a batch technique is used to determine the competitive liquid-phase adsorption equilibrium of binary mixtures. The results show that liquid-phase binary mixture selectivity prediction cannot simply depend on the amount of cations present in the zeolite framework, but it has to consider the details of the location and energetics of the available molecular adsorption sites.

Abstract

An ZSM-22 aluminosilicate zeolite was synthesized using the hydrothermal gel method at 150 degrees C. Products obtained after different synthesis times were characterized using various techniques and catalytic testing. Massive formation of ZSM-22 nanocrystals occurs after only a short synthesis time, appearing as isolated rods with a cross section of 12 +/- 4 nm. Nanorods have aluminum enriched at their external surface. Later in the crystallization process nanorods align and fuse sideways, whereby the external surface is systematically converted into an internal micropore surface. The formation of aluminum bearing micropores by the joining of nanorod surfaces is responsible for the enhanced catalytic activity. For this, the zeolite synthesis of nanoscale crystallites is ineffective for enhancing catalytic activity.

Abstract

Hierarchical zeolites are a class of superior catalysts which couples the intrinsic zeolitic properties to enhanced accessibility and intracrystalline mass transport to and from the active sites. The design of hierarchical USY (Ultra-Stable Y) catalysts is achieved using a sustainable postsynthetic room temperature treatment with mildly alkaline NH4OH (0.02 m) solutions. Starting from a commercial dealuminated USY zeolite (Si/Al = 47), a hierarchical material is obtained by selective and tuneable creation of interconnected and accessible small mesopores (2–6 nm). In addition, the treatment immediately yields the NH4+ form without the need for additional ion exchange. After NH4OH modification, the crystal morphology is retained, whereas the microporosity and relative crystallinity are decreased. The gradual formation of dense amorphous phases throughout the crystal without significant framework atom leaching rationalizes the very high material yields (>90%). The superior catalytic performance of the developed hierarchical zeolites is demonstrated in the acid-catalyzed isomerization of α-pinene and the metal-catalyzed conjugation of safflower oil. Significant improvements in activity and selectivity are attained, as well as a lowered susceptibility to deactivation. The catalytic performance is intimately related to the introduced mesopores, hence enhanced mass transport capacity, and the retained intrinsic zeolitic properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

MTT zeolite crystals with siliceous layer on their external surface were synthesized using a two step hydrothermal procedure in which cores prepared from an aluminosilicate gel were transferred into a siliceous gel for farther crystal growth. The thickness of the siliceous shell was varied by varying the proportion of the two gels. The samples were characterized using physicochemical methods (XRD, XPS, 27Al MAS NMR, SEM, N2 adsorption). The zeolites were converted into bifunctional catalysts and evaluated in hydroisomerization of decane.
