101. Measuring effects of screen time on the development of children in the Philippines: a cross-sectional study

Abstract

Abstract Background Screen time in young children is discouraged because of its negative effects on their development. However, excessive screen media use has been rising, particularly during the global pandemic when stay-at-home mandates were placed on young children in several countries. This study documents potential developmental effects of excessive screen media use. Method This is a cross-sectional study. Participants were 24 to 36 month old Filipino children recruited through non-probable convenience sampling from August to October 2021. Regression analyses were performed to test the association between screen time and changes in scaled scores for skills and behaviors determined from the Adaptive Behavior Scale and to identify factors associated with increased screen media use. Results Increased odds of excessive use of screen media of children by 4.19 when parents watch excessively and 8.56 times greater odds when children are alone compared to watching with a parent or other children. When adjusted for co-viewing, more than 2 h of screen time is significantly associated with decrease in receptive and expressive language scores. The effects on personal skills, interpersonal relationships and play and leisure skills were only statistically significant at 4 to 5 or more hours of screen time use. Conclusion The study found that spending no more than 2 h screen time had minimal negative effects on development and that use beyond 2 h was associated with poorer language development among 2 year olds. There is less excessive screen media use when a child co-views with an adult, sibling or other child and when parents likewise have less screen time themselves.

Abstract

Economics is crucial in all countries, with no exception in Cambodia. There are different factors contributing to economic development. The current study thoroughly analyses the economic factors of Pursat orange production in Cambodia, including production expenses, income generation, profits, and the broader economic impacts on households and the national economy. By gathering a wide range of information from Pursat orange growers, the study uses various economic principles and approaches to assess the economic viability and possibility of Pursat orange cultivation as a long-term revenue stream. The current study employed a qualitative design to identify and analyse the primary components of production costs, evaluate the impact of revenue generation mechanisms, and determine the key determinants of profitability and economic sustainability in Pursat orange farming, elucidating their contributions to the overall financial landscape and informing decision-making processes among stakeholder. The results emphasise Pursat oranges' importance for increasing household income and promoting economic development in Cambodia. Additionally, the research provides opportunities for future investigations, indicating possible areas for further exploration, like the influence of technological progress on production effectiveness, the significance of market trends in determining profit, and the potential socio-economic advantages of value-added activities in the Pursat orange supply chain. The research provides valuable insights for policymakers, stakeholders, and farmers by illuminating the economic aspects of Pursat orange production. It emphasises opportunities to improve the sector's resilience and its beneficial effects on livelihoods and overall economic growth.

107. In-Hospital Continuous Medical Education during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious disease as it is spread by contact with infected surfaces and inhalation of droplets. Several measures have been put in place to prevent the COVID-19 infection one of which is social distancing and physical distancing. Some in-hospital continuous medical education was suspended during the pandemic. Objective of Study: The objective of the study is to investigate the impact of social distancing on In-hospital continuous professional development during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research methodology: This is a cross-sectional study conducted among doctors working in Nigeria irrespective of their cadre or location. A self-administered online questionnaire was used to generate data for this study. There was no risk of participating in the study. Results: The respondents in this study were 62. The majority 51(82.3%) had different in-hospital continuous medical education (CME) activities during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic when there was a ban in Nigeria on the gathering of more than 20 persons; the CME activities were via Zoom video conferencing 44 (71%) App. The majority of the respondents however preferred a face-to-face (physical) meeting [40(74.2%)] and also learnt better during a face-to-face meeting [46(74.2%)]. Conclusion: CME is very important in healthcare so COVID-19 did not stop it although it went through a lot of transformation in the mode it was delivered.

108. Prolonged disease control despite ALK inhibitor discontinuation in advanced ALK-positive NSCLC

Abstract

Introduction: EML4-ALK is an oncogenic driver, seen in around five per cent of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, which can be targeted with anaplastic lymphoma kinase tyrosine kinase inhibitors with great response rates. Disease flare refers to sudden rapid disease worsening on tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) discontinuation, which is associated with shorter survival and worse outcomes. Here, we review cases previously published in the literature where patients developed disease flares, and contrast this with our patients who had prolonged survival despite TKI discontinuation. Case description: We report three different patients with advanced ALK-positive NSCLC seen at our institute, who had EML4-ALK translocation variant 1 oncogenic driver on next-generation sequencing. They received treatment with several different ALK inhibitors before opting to discontinue TKI. They were able to come off TKI safely without developing disease flare and had prolonged survival. Discussion: Shorter time to progression on TKI, presence of symptoms with disease progression or central nervous system/pleural metastasis have been previously linked with development of flare, although this was not seen in our case series. Tumour response at the time of treatment discontinuation, line of therapy, overall disease burden, fusion variant and co-alteration status can affect the prognosis of these patients after ALK TKI cessation. In particular, variant 1 and wild-type TP53 status may be a suitable patient population for dose optimisation strategies. Intermittent TKI dosing strategies may help to avoid acquiring resistance mutations and prevent long-term treatment toxicities. Conclusion: It is important for clinicians to identify patients at risk for developing disease flare on TKI discontinuation to improve outcomes. Intermittent TKI dosing strategies require further investigation.

109. Final 1-Year Results of the TUTOR Randomized Trial Comparing Carpal Tunnel Release with Ultrasound Guidance to Mini-open Technique

Abstract

Background:. Studies comparing carpal tunnel release with ultrasound guidance (CTR-US) to mini-open CTR (mOCTR) are limited. This randomized trial compared the efficacy and safety of these techniques. Methods:. In this multicenter randomized trial, patients were randomized (2:1) to unilateral CTR-US or mOCTR. Outcomes included Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire Symptom Severity Scale (BCTQ-SSS) and Functional Status Scale (BCTQ-FSS), numeric pain scale (0–10), EuroQoL-5 Dimension 5-Level (EQ-5D-5L), scar outcomes, and complications over 1 year. Results:. Patients received CTR-US (n = 94) via wrist incision (mean 6 mm) or mOCTR (n = 28) via palmar incision (mean 22 mm). Comparing CTR-US with mOCTR, the mean changes in BCTQ-SSS (−1.8 versus -1.8; P = 0.96), BCTQ-FSS (−1.0 versus −1.0; P = 0.75), numeric pain scale (−3.9 versus −3.8; P = 0.74), and EQ-5D-5L (0.13 versus 0.12; P = 0.79) over 1 year were comparable between groups. Freedom from scar sensitivity or pain favored CTR-US (95% versus 74%; P = 0.005). Complications occurred in 2.1% versus 3.6% of patients (P = 0.55), all within 3 weeks postprocedure. There was one revision surgery in the CTR-US group, and no revisions for persistent or recurrent symptoms in either group. Conclusions:. CTR-US and mOCTR demonstrated similar improvement in carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms and quality of life with comparable low complication rates over 1 year of follow-up. CTR-US was performed with a smaller incision and associated with less scar discomfort.

Abstract

Summary: Background: Although immunomodulators have established benefit against the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in general, it is uncertain whether such agents improve outcomes without increasing the risk of secondary infections in the specific subgroup of previously immunocompromised patients. We assessed the effect of immunomodulators on outcomes of immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Methods: The protocol was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022335397). MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and references of relevant articles were searched up to 01-06-2022. Authors of potentially eligible randomized controlled trials were contacted to provide data on immunocompromised patients randomized to immunomodulators vs control (i.e., placebo or standard-of-care). Findings: Eleven randomized controlled trials involving 397 immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were included. Ten trials had low risk of bias. There was no difference between immunocompromised patients randomized to immunomodulators vs control regarding mortality [30/182 (16.5%) vs 41/215 (19.1%); RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.61–1.41; p = 0.74], secondary infections (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.64–1.58; p = 0.99) and change in World Health Organization ordinal scale from baseline to day 15 (weighed mean difference 0.27, 95% CI -0.09–0.63; p = 0.15). In subgroup analyses including only patients with hematologic malignancy, only trials with low risk of bias, only trials administering IL-6 inhibitors, or only trials administering immunosuppressants, there was no difference between comparators regarding mortality. Interpretation: Immunomodulators, compared to control, were not associated with harmful or beneficial outcomes, including mortality, secondary infections, and change in ordinal scale, when administered to immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Abstract

X-ray tomography is widely used for three-dimensional structure determination in many areas of science, from the millimeter to the nanometer scale. The resolution and quality of the 3D reconstruction is limited by the availability of alignment parameters that correct for the mechanical shifts of the sample or sample stage for the images that constitute a scan. In this paper we describe an algorithm for marker-free, fully automated and accurately aligned and reconstructed X-ray tomography data. Our approach solves the tomographic reconstruction jointly with projection data alignment based on a rigid-body deformation model. We demonstrate the robustness of our method on both synthetic phantom and experimental data and show that our method is highly efficient in recovering relatively large alignment errors without prior knowledge of a low resolution approximation of the 3D structure or a reasonable estimate of alignment parameters.

Abstract

Lifelong Learning (LL) refers to the ability to continually learn and solve new problems with incremental available information over time while retaining previous knowledge. Much attention has been given lately to Supervised Lifelong Learning (SLL) with a stream of labelled data. In contrast, we focus on resolving challenges in Unsupervised Lifelong Learning (ULL) with streaming unlabelled data when the data distribution and the unknown class labels evolve over time. Bayesian framework is natural to incorporate past knowledge and sequentially update the belief with new data. We develop a fully Bayesian inference framework for ULL with a novel end-to-end Deep Bayesian Unsupervised Lifelong Learning (DBULL) algorithm, which can progressively discover new clusters without forgetting the past with unlabelled data while learning latent representations. To efficiently maintain past knowledge, we develop a novel knowledge preservation mechanism via sufficient statistics of the latent representation for raw data. To detect the potential new clusters on the fly, we develop an automatic cluster discovery and redundancy removal strategy in our inference inspired by Nonparametric Bayesian statistics techniques. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using image and text corpora benchmark datasets in both LL and batch settings.

113. Revisiting Hilbert-Schmidt Information Bottleneck for Adversarial Robustness

Abstract

We investigate the HSIC (Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion) bottleneck as a regularizer for learning an adversarially robust deep neural network classifier. In addition to the usual cross-entropy loss, we add regularization terms for every intermediate layer to ensure that the latent representations retain useful information for output prediction while reducing redundant information. We show that the HSIC bottleneck enhances robustness to adversarial attacks both theoretically and experimentally. In particular, we prove that the HSIC bottleneck regularizer reduces the sensitivity of the classifier to adversarial examples. Our experiments on multiple benchmark datasets and architectures demonstrate that incorporating an HSIC bottleneck regularizer attains competitive natural accuracy and improves adversarial robustness, both with and without adversarial examples during training. Abstract

With limited studies that focus on middle childhood education and free play, this study aimed to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) related to free play of 120 early grade schoolteachers in private and public schools of Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. The data were gathered via self-administered questionnaire. The study used descriptive and statistical means to analyze data. Findings show that teachers have knowledge on free play; however, there were negative attitudes toward play, and play was not practiced. Thus, teachers and education administrators are recommended to make adjustments for teachers' pedagogical advancement on play in middle childhood.

Both these phenomena can cause adverse pregnancy outcomes and are extremely harmful to the mother and fetus. In this study, we observed that several predictive factors have important value in GDM and PE. Among the GDM group, abnormal levels of adiponectin (APN), C-reactive protein (CRP), and Leptin were observed. The coexistence of PE and GDM in the pregnant population is not uncommon. Ultimately, we discovered abnormal levels of factors such as Visfatin, Advanced oxidative protein product (AOPP), Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), and resistin in both GDM and PE groups. Particularly, the FGF21 factor holds significant importance in our research. Therefore, we need to complete the analysis and discussion of relevant predictive factors to enable early prediction and disease monitoring of GDM, PE, and other pregnancy-related disorders, ultimately contributing to the long-term health of pregnant women.Keywords: gestational diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia, predictor of the GDM and PE

Understanding whether residents in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) are being adequately exposed to and trained in the diagnosis and management of the disease is important for improving care.Methods: We conducted an online cross-sectional survey of OB/GYN residents to investigate their comfort level and familiarity with endometriosis diagnosis and management. Residency program directors and coordinators of 20 OB/GYN residency programs in California, USA were emailed to disseminate the 31-question, anonymous survey in January to February 2023. Responses were collected using Redcap and analysis was conducted using STATA.Results: 67 residents answered at least one non-demographic question and were included. A resident response rate was not calculated because we were unable to determine how many programs distributed the survey. 84% of residents felt they could recognise symptoms of endometriosis but over 30% of senior residents were not comfortable with sonographic diagnosis of endometrioma. Approximately one third of residents felt comfortable managing hypoestrogenic symptoms, osteoporotic risks, and add-back progestin for certain hormonal therapies. Academic-hospital based residents had significantly more exposure to attendings prescribing long-acting reversible contraception, GnRH antagonists, and GnRH agonists but there were no significant differences in trainee prescribing practices or comfort. More respondents would feel comfortable medically managing endometriosis (52%) than surgically managing the disease (26%) if they were in practice today, with only 39% of PGY3-4 residents feeling comfortable surgically managing endometriosis.Conclusion: There is considerable room for improvement in the education of residents in the diagnosis and medical and surgical management of endometriosis.Plain Language Summary: Given the frequent multi-year delay in the diagnosis and proper treatment of endometriosis, we wanted to evaluate whether residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) feel adequately trained to manage this disease. Through our survey, we identified that OB/GYN residents are comfortable with diagnosing endometriosis but are less confident with treatment, particularly surgical management. Only 52% of senior residents in their final 2 years of residency training report they would feel comfortable with the medical treatment of endometriosis if they were in practice today, compared to 39% reporting comfort with surgical management. However, the benefits of this triple therapy remain unclear. Thus, this study evaluated whether the combination of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), lenvatinib, and programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors (triple therapy) was effective and safe for unresectable HCC with main trunk portal vein tumor thrombus (Vp4).Patients and Methods: This study enrolled patients receiving triple therapy at four institutions between August 2018 and April 2022. Patient characteristics and course of treatment were extracted from patient records. Tumors and tumor thrombus response were evaluated using an HCC-specific modified RECIST. Kaplan–Meier curve analysis demonstrated overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Adverse events (AEs) were evaluated according to the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, version 5.0.Results: Median follow-up duration was 18 (4.0– 26.3) months. Overall, 41 patients with HCC and Vp4 receiving first-line triple therapy were enrolled. The intrahepatic tumor objective response rate was 68.3%. The median OS was 21.7 (range, 2.8– 30.5) months, whereas the median PFS was 14.5 (range, 1.3– 27.6) months. Twelve patients received sequential resections. Resection was independently associated with favorable OS and PFS. Fever (31.7%), hypertension (26.8%), fatigue (24.4%), abnormal liver function (63.4%) and decreased appetite (21.9%) were the AEs frequently associated with treatment. We aimed to assess the clinical profile and hospital outcome of children with NTD that were operated in Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Hawassa, Ethiopia.Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study on 250 children with NTD that were treated in a tertiary hospital from March 2016 to May 2020 was conducted to describe the clinical profile and treatment outcome at discharge. Logistic regression analysis was carried out to evaluate factors that determine mortality.Results: Out of the 250 children, 50.4% were male. Myelomeningocele was the most common type of NTD (77.2%) followed by meningocele (10.4%). Only 3 mothers (1.2%) received periconceptional folic acid. Prenatal diagnosis of NTD was made in only 22 (8.8%) cases. 52.8% of the NTDs were ruptured at presentation and 50.8% had associated sepsis. At presentation, 42.4% were ≤ 72 hours of age and only 18 neonates (7.2%) were operated within 72 hours of admission. 54% had associated hydrocephalus, 31.6% had Chiari II malformation and 19.6% had club foot. Surgical site infection, post MMC repair hydrocephalus, and meningitis were seen in 8%, 14% and 16.8% of the participants, respectively. The mean duration of hospitalization was 24 ± 14.4 days. Twenty patients (8%) died before discharge from hospital. Prematurity [AOR: 26 (95% CI: 8.01, 86.04), P < 0.001] and the presence of meningitis [AOR: 3.8 (95% CI: 1.12,12.9), P = 0.03]were determinants of mortality.Conclusion: NTDs are substantial health problem in this part of the country. Periconceptional folic acid supplementation is almost non-existent. Prenatal detection of NTDs is very low and management is delayed in the majority of cases. Myelomeningocele is the most common type of NTD. Abstract

We present our systematic approach to incision planning and skin graft excision for gender-affirming vaginoplasty. This approach is adaptable to patients of different body habitus and genital skin surface area, and it allows for early skin graft harvest with predictable wound tension at closure. We also describe how to adapt in cases of severe genital hypoplasia.

Abstract

Solid-state lithium batteries are promising for safety and energy density compared with traditional lithium-ion batteries. However, the large interfacial resistance between the electrode and electrolyte is a bottleneck to achieving high-performance solid-state batteries. Engineered electrode structures with a porous scaffold of the solid electrolyte material are promising to lower the interfacial resistance and provide a mechanical support for a thin solid electrolyte layer. In this work, two ceramic processing techniques are used to fabricate porous/dense bilayer architectures based on a Li6.25Al0.25La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) Li-garnet material. Finger-like vertically aligned pores are created by the phase inversion (PI) process. A water bath presaturated with Li salt prevents Li loss during the PI solvent exchange step. Pore size and porosity can be optimized by adjusting the bath temperature. The high shear compaction process was used to prepare LLZO tapes with 40, 60, and 80 vol% poreformer. The porosity of the tapes after sintering is 39.5%, 58.4%, and 75.4%, respectively. Microtomography exhibits the porosity, pore shape, and pore distribution of the tapes. A typical cathode material LiNi0.33Mn0.33Co0.33O2 (NMC) is filled into the pores via vacuum infiltration, and a dense cathode layer is formed within the garnet scaffold.

Abstract

Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency in the enzyme α-galactosidase A due to mutations in the GLA gene. This leads to an accumulation of globotriaosylceramide (GL-3) in many tissues, which results in progressive damage to the kidneys, heart, and nervous system. We present the molecular and clinical characteristics and long-term outcomes of FD patients from a multidisciplinary clinic at the University of California, Irvine treated with agalsidase beta enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for 2-20 years. This cohort comprised 24 adults (11 males, 13 females) and two male children (median age 45; range 10-68 years). Of the 26 patients in this cohort, 20 were on ERT (12 males, 8 females). We describe one novel variant not previously reported in the literature in a patient with features of 'classic' FD. The vast majority of patients in this cohort presented with symptoms of 'classic' FD including peripheral neuropathic pain, some form of cardiac involvement, angiokeratomas, corneal verticillata, hypohidrosis, tinnitus, and gastrointestinal symptoms, primarily abdominal pain. The majority of males had clinically evident renal involvement. An annual eGFR reduction of -1.88 mL/min/1.73 m2/yr during the course of ERT was seen in this cohort. The most common renal presentation was proteinuria, and one individual required a renal transplant. Other common findings were pulmonary involvement, lymphedema, hearing loss, and significantly, three patients had strokes. Notably, there was a high prevalence of endocrine dysfunction and low bone mineral density, including several with osteoporosis. While enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) cleared plasma GL-3 in this cohort, there was limited improvement in renal function or health-related quality of life based on the patient-reported SF-36 Health Survey. Physical functioning significantly declined over the course of ERT treatment, which may be, in part, due to the late initiation of ERT in several patients. Further delineation of the phenotypic and genotypic spectrum in patients with FD and the long-term outcome of ERT will help improve management and treatment options for this disease.

Abstract

We consider a rank regression setting, in which a dataset of $N$ samples with features in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is ranked by an oracle via $M$ pairwise comparisons. Specifically, there exists a latent total ordering of the samples; when presented with a pair of samples, a noisy oracle identifies the one ranked higher with respect to the underlying total ordering. A learner observes a dataset of such comparisons and wishes to regress sample ranks from their features. We show that to learn the model parameters with $\epsilon > 0$ accuracy, it suffices to conduct $M \in \Omega(dN\log^3 N/\epsilon^2)$ comparisons uniformly at random when $N$ is $\Omega(d/\epsilon^2)$.

Abstract

Perfect alignment in chosen beam sectors at both transmit- and receive-nodes is required for beamforming in mmWave bands. Current 802.11ad WiFi and emerging 5G cellular standards spend up to several milliseconds exploring different sector combinations to identify the beam pair with the highest SNR. In this paper, we propose a machine learning (ML) approach with two sequential convolutional neural networks (CNN) that uses out-of-band information, in the form of camera images, to (i) rapidly identify the locations of the transmitter and receiver nodes, and then (ii) return the optimal beam pair. We experimentally validate this intriguing concept for indoor settings using the NI 60GHz mmwave transceiver. Our results reveal that our ML approach reduces beamforming related exploration time by 93% under different ambient lighting conditions, with an error of less than 1% compared to the time-intensive deterministic method defined by the current standards.

Abstract

We study an Open-World Class Discovery problem in which, given labeled training samples from old classes, we need to discover new classes from unlabeled test samples. There are two critical challenges to addressing this paradigm: (a) transferring knowledge from old to new classes, and (b) incorporating knowledge learned from new classes back to the original model. We propose Class Discovery Kernel Network with Expansion (CD-KNet-Exp), a deep learning framework, which utilizes the Hilbert Schmidt Independence Criterion to bridge supervised and unsupervised information together in a systematic way, such that the learned knowledge from old classes is distilled appropriately for discovering new classes. Abstract

In lifelong learning, we wish to maintain and update a model (e.g., a neural network classifier) in the presence of new classification tasks that arrive sequentially. In this paper, we propose a learn-prune-share (LPS) algorithm which addresses the challenges of catastrophic forgetting, parsimony, and knowledge reuse simultaneously. LPS splits the network into task-specific partitions via an ADMM-based pruning strategy. This leads to no forgetting, while maintaining parsimony. Moreover, LPS integrates a novel selective knowledge sharing scheme into this ADMM optimization framework. This enables adaptive knowledge sharing in an end-to-end fashion. Comprehensive experimental results on two lifelong learning benchmark datasets and a challenging real-world radio frequency fingerprinting dataset are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Abstract

BackgroundAlthough the safety and therapeutic efficacy of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) has been extensively evaluated, the safety of CCP donation has not been explored in a multi-institutional context.Study design and methodsNine blood collection organizations (BCOs) participated in a multi-institutional donor hemovigilance effort to assess the safety of CCP donation. Donor adverse events (DAEs) were defined according to the Standard for Surveillance of Complications Related to Blood Donation, and severity was assessed using the severity grading tool. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine attributes associated with DAE severity.ResultsThe overall DAE rate was 37.7 per 1000 donations. Repeat apheresis and apheresis-naïve donors experienced adverse event rates of 19.9 and 49.8 per 1000 donations, respectively. Female donors contributed 51.9% of CCP donations with a DAE rate of 49.4 per 1000 donations. The DAE rate for male donors was 27.4 per 1000 donations. Vasovagal reactions accounted for over half of all reported DAEs (51.1%). After adjustment, volume of CCP donated was associated with vasovagal reaction severity (odds ratio [OR] 6.5, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.5-17.1). Donor age and donation history were also associated with DAE severity. Considerable differences in DAE types and rates were observed across the participating BCOs despite the use of standardized hemovigilance definitions.ConclusionThe safety of CCP donation appears comparable to that of conventional apheresis plasma donation with similar associated risk factors for DAE types and severity.

Abstract

The following is a concise review of the Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine Core reviewing pediatric pulmonary infections, diagnostic assays, and imaging techniques presented at the 2021 American Thoracic Society Core Curriculum. Molecular methods have revolutionized microbiology. We highlight the need to collect appropriate samples for detection of specific pathogens or for panels and understand the limitations of the assays. Considerable progress has been made in imaging modalities for detecting pediatric pulmonary infections. Specifically, lung ultrasound and lung magnetic resonance imaging are promising radiation-free diagnostic tools, with results comparable with their radiation-exposing counterparts, for the evaluation and management of pulmonary infections. Clinicians caring for children with pulmonary disease should ensure that patients at risk for nontuberculous mycobacteria disease are identified and receive appropriate nontuberculous mycobacteria screening, monitoring, and treatment. Children with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) typically present with mild symptoms, but some may develop severe disease. Treatment is mainly supportive care, and most patients make a full recovery. Anticipatory guidance and appropriate counseling from pediatricians on social distancing and diagnostic testing remain vital to curbing the pandemic. The pediatric immunocompromised patient is at risk for invasive and opportunistic pulmonary infections. Prompt recognition of predisposing risk factors, combined with knowledge of clinical characteristics of microbial pathogens, can assist in the diagnosis and treatment of specific bacterial, viral, or fungal diseases.

144. Facebook Usage and Depression Levels of Selected Filipino College Students

Abstract

This study examined the relationship of sociodemographic characteristics and Facebook usage to the depression level of college students. A total of 347 respondents were purposively selected and completed a self-administered questionnaire. Results showed that: sex has a weak positive association with depression level (r=0.0962); age did not vary much across depression level; there is a moderate positive association between sexual orientation and depression level (r= 0.2794); socioeconomic status has an inverse relationship with depression level (r= -0.2126); and relationship status has a moderate positive association with depression level (r= 1.365). Further, there is a moderate positive association between the number of minutes spent on Facebook and depression level (r= 0.4229); there is a weak positive association between frequency of Facebook visits and depression level (r= 0.3052); and Facebook activities are positively correlated to depression. Young social media users are encouraged to use it moderately to avoid negative mental health outcomes
