Abstract

Inclining the column by an angle 0 can substantially increase molecular separation between the top and the bottom in a thermogravitional column. Experiments on the water-ethanol system are performed that support this view.

Abstract

A comparison between TOPEX altimeter observations, sea surface temperature, and low or high sea surface height is presented in delineating both cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies in Indian's Bay of Bengal. It is posited that sea surface height presents the best approach, as the Bay's waters are highly stratified.

Abstract

Sea surface height (SSH) observations from satellite altimeter are subjected to various types of environmental and geophysical errors. To get the small amplitude (of the order of a few centimeters) dynamic oceanographic signals from altimeters, effects due to these errors have to be corrected. The validity of each of the correction terms to the ERS-1 altimeter measurements have been studied. Most of the corrections reduced the variance and have thus been found to be effective altimetric corrections. Abstract

High blood cholesterol is typically considered a feature of wealthy western countries1,2. However, dietary and behavioural determinants of blood cholesterol are changing rapidly throughout the world3 and countries are using lipid-lowering medications at varying rates. These changes can have distinct effects on the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol, which have different effects on human health4,5. However, the trends of HDL and non-HDL cholesterol levels over time have not been previously reported in a global analysis. Here we pooled 1,127 population-based studies that measured blood lipids in 102.6 million individuals aged 18 years and older to estimate trends from 1980 to 2018 in mean total, non-HDL and HDL cholesterol levels for 200 countries. Globally, there was little change in total or non-HDL cholesterol from 1980 to 2018. This was a net effect of increases in low- and middle-income countries, especially in east and southeast Asia, and decreases in high-income western countries, especially those in northwestern Europe, and in central and eastern Europe. 125. Association Between State-Level Criminal Justice–Focused Prenatal Substance Use Policies in the US and Substance Use–Related Foster Care Admissions and Family Reunification

Abstract

Importance States have enacted criminal justice–related substance use policies to address prenatal substance use and protect infants from adverse health effects of parental substance use. However, little is known about the consequences of these policies for permanency outcomes among infants in the foster care system in the United States. Objectives To evaluate the consequences of criminal justice–related prenatal substance use policies for family reunification and to examine differences in parental reunification by racial/ethnic group. Design, Setting, and Participants In this cohort study using data from the 2005 to 2017 Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System, 13 cohorts of infants who entered the foster care system were followed up. States with criminal justice–related prenatal substance use policies were compared with states without such policies before and after their enactment using a discrete-time hazard model adjusted for individual covariates, state, and cohort fixed effects. The sample consisted of 350 604 infants 1 year or younger who had been removed from their home because of parental drug or alcohol use. Main Outcomes and Measures Length of time from entering the child welfare system to first reunification with a parent and hazard rates (HRs). Results Of the 350 604 infants 1 year or younger, 182 314 (52%) were boys, 251 572 (72%) were non-Hispanic white children, and 160 927 (46%) lived in US states with a criminal justice–focused prenatal substance use policy. Among those who were reunified, 36% of the reunifications occurred during the first year and 45% in the second year. Foster care infants who were removed from their homes because of parental substance use who live in states that have adopted criminal justice–oriented policies had a lower chance of reunification with a parent compared with states that have not adopted those policies (HR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.94-0.96). Abstract

Future electrical distribution systems will experience a mega-scale deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) coupled within various forms of microgrids which will be required to be integrated into some ways. Their emerging complex interactions will not only pose a significant challenge in integrating both homogeneous and heterogeneous control solutions but also create an opportunity to optimize their operations as the whole. In this book chapter, emerging control technologies are briefly captured to deal with a high penetration level of renewables in the microgrid. These control methods are based on a hierarchical control framework that allows overlaying control layer to be integrated smoothly with the local control methods. Two examples of using such control strategies in two different demonstration sites in the Netherlands and Slovenia are introduced.

Abstract

Background: Change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure could be due to both shifts in the entire distribution of blood pressure (representing the combined effects of public health interventions and secular trends) and changes in its high-blood-pressure tail (representing successful clinical interventions to control blood pressure in the hypertensive population). Our aim was to quantify the contributions of these two phenomena to the worldwide trends in the prevalence of raised blood pressure. Methods: We pooled 1018 population-based studies with blood pressure measurements on 88.6 million participants from 1985 to 2016. We first calculated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and prevalence of raised blood pressure by sex and 10-year age group from 20-29 years to 70-79 years in each study, taking into account complex survey design and survey sample weights, where relevant. We used a linear mixed effect model to quantify the association between (probittransformed) prevalence of raised blood pressure and age-group- and sex-specific mean blood pressure. We calculated the contributions of change in mean SBP and DBP, and of change in the prevalence-mean association, to the change in prevalence of raised blood pressure. Results: In 2005-16, at the same level of population mean SBP and DBP, men and women in South Asia and in Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa would have the highest prevalence of raised blood pressure, and men and women in the highincome Asia Pacific and high-income Western regions would have the lowest. In most region-sex-age groups where the prevalence of raised blood pressure declined, one half or more of the decline was due to the decline in mean blood pressure. Where prevalence of raised blood pressure has increased, the change was entirely driven by increasing mean blood pressure, offset partly by the change in the prevalence-mean association. Conclusions: Change in mean blood pressure is the main driver of the worldwide change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure, but change in the high-blood-pressure tail of the distribution has also contributed to the change in prevalence, especially in older age groups. © The Author(s) 2018.

Abstract

Wheat-mungbean-T. Aman rice (W-M-R) is one of the most dominant cropping patterns in the High Ganges River Floodplain Soils (HGR; AEZ-11) of Bangladesh. However, the average yield of wheat, mungbean and T. Aman rice in the HGR is low compared to the other parts of the country, due to the majority of farmers grow wheat in the same land after harvest of T. Aman rice. One of the major causes of poor yield may be application of fertilizers considering single crop rather than whole cropping pattern. By considering this important issue, an experiment was conducted to find out an optimum and economic fertilizer dose for wheat-mungbean-T. Aman rice cropping pattern at Atgharia, Pabna (AEZ-11) of Bangladesh during 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. The initial soil of the experimental field was chemically analyzed and fertilizer doses for each crop were calculated on yield goal basis as per fertilizer recommendation for the location specific soils. There were eight treatments combination: T 1 = 100% NPK (STB-soil test-based nutrients management); T 2 = T 1 +25% N; T 3 = T 1 +25% NP; T 4 = T 1 +25% NK; T 5 = T 1 +25% PK; T 6 = T 1 +25% NPK; T 7 = 75% of T 1 and T 8 = control (without fertilizers), where STB applied fertilizers for wheat (‘BARI Gom 26’) were 120-18-75-10-2-1 kg N-P-K-S-Zn-B ha-1; for mungbean (‘Binamoog-5’) were 18-18-30-10-0.5 kg N-P-K-S-B ha-1 and for T. Aman rice (‘Binadhan-7’) were 64-8-24-6 kg N-P-K-S ha-1. After two years of research, the maximum yield of wheat was obtained in T 6 (T 1 +25% NPK) treatment which was statistically higher than other treatments except T 3 . While, both mungbean and T. Aman rice gave the maximum yield in treatment T 3 (T 1 +25% NP) and the lowest was observed in control plot (T 8 ). Considering the economic point of view, the maximum net benefi t was obtained from T 6 treatment (T 1 +25% NPK) followed by T 3 (T 1 +25% NP) and the maximum MBCR was also obtained from T 3 treatment. So, the fertilizer dose 150-23-94-10-2-1 kg N-P-K-S-Zn-B ha-1 for wheat, 23-23-30-10-0.5 kg N-P-K-S-B ha-1 for mungbean and 80-10-24-6 kg N-P-K-S ha-1 for T. Abstract

The present work is concerned with preparation, separation and structure elucidation of solid ion-pairs of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in reaction to copper(II) ion. The prepared solid ion-pairs were investigated by different analytical techniques, such as FT-IR, mass and thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses, in addition to elemental analysis. The general formulae of the prepared ion-pairs were determined. Moreover, the formulae of prepared ion-pairs were proposed and structurally identified. The biological activities of the separated solid ion-pairs toward some kinds of insect species in flour mills in comparison with their drugs were studied, and they were found to be biologically active more than their parent drugs. The present work involved the preparation, separation and structures elucidation of Cu(II) ion-pairs of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Their proposed structures (a–d) are given.
