Veterinary care for rabbits has been growing, and, consequently, the anesthetic and analgesic management of this species must be improved. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the technique of localization of the epidural space with the aid of a peripheral nerve stimulator and epidurographic, comparing two techniques for determining the infused volume in rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus). In a prospective, randomized blinded study, six healthy New Zealand rabbits, adults, and weighing from 2.2 kg to 3.8 kg received two treatments, at 1 week intervals: 0.33 mL/kg (treatment I) or 0.05 mL per centimeter of the spine (treatment II) of ioexol epidurally. In both treatments, a peripheral nerve stimulator (2 Hz, 0.25 mA and 0.1 milliseconds) was used to determine the location of the epidural space. Latero-lateral and ventro-dorsal radiographs were taken after five (T5) and twenty-five minutes (T25) of iohexol administration. The epidural space was correctly accessed in 92% of attempts. Treatment I received a smaller volume of contrast than treatment II, 1.0 ± 0.2 mL versus 2.1 ± 0.1 mL (mean ± standard deviation), respectively (p = 0.007). At T5, the cranial progression of the contrast varied between L4 and L5 in treatment I, and L5 and T10 in treatment II. At T25, no contrast was observed in any rabbit. Purpose: To conduct a systematic review of nanoparticles' use in the treatment of prostate cancer in animals., Methods: A systematic review was conducted in the databases PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Cochrane Library, and EMBASE, and the descriptors were chosen based on terms indexed in Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS)/Medical Subject Headings (MESH), which are: nanoparticles, nanomedicine, and prostate cancer. The systematic review protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) with ID CRD42021271008., Results: A total of 3,897 articles was chosen; after reading the inclusion and exclusion criteria, six scientific articles with themes involving nanoparticles carrying medications were reached. Among the nanoparticles found, there were carboxymethylcellulose polymer, micellar casein nanoparticles, liquid crystal nanoparticles, serum albumin nanoparticles, and poly(ethylene glycol)-block-polylactide (mPEG-PLA) conjugated nanoparticles encapsulating cabazitaxel, docetaxel, and flutamide, which were nanoparticles used to treat prostate cancer in animals., Conclusions: Through using nanoparticles to encapsulate medications for treating prostate cancer in animals, studies show a decrease in weight and tumor reduction, with nanoparticles resulting in greater survival time than free medications. The improved permeability and retention effect of nanoparticles in the bloodstream contribute to their effectiveness.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of resistance and aerobic exercise on colorectal cancer (CRC) development in mice induced by azoxymethane (AOM) coupled with colitis., Methods: Forty animals induced with CRC were used, divided into five groups of eight animals each: sedentary; continuous aerobics; continuous anaerobic; aerobic PI; and anaerobic PI. AOM was administered to the animals in two doses of 10 mg/kg each over the course of two weeks, the first dose administered in the third week and the second administered in the fourth. For the colitis, three cycles of dextran sodium sulfate were administered for five days, separated by two weeks of water. The 14th week of the experiment saw the euthanasia, the removal of their colons, and the creation of microscopy slides for histological analysis., Results: Preneoplastic lesions developed in all five groups; there were no significant differences between them. However, in terms of inflammatory symptoms, mucosal ulceration was much more frequently in the exercise groups than in the sedentary group (p = 0.016). The number of polyps overall (p = 0.002), the distal region's polyp development (p = 0.003), and the proximal region's polyp development (p = 0.04) were all statistically different than sedentary group., Conclusions: The study discovered no significant difference in disease activity index scores between groups, but there was a significant difference in the number of polyps and the presence of mucosal ulceration in the colon.

Objective: To perform an immunohistochemical evaluation using the IDH1 and Ki67 markers in patients who underwent treatment for chondrosarcoma in a reference service center in Brazil., Methods: Retrospective analytical observational study using medical records of patients diagnosed with chondrosarcoma. Besides the epidemiological and clinical profile, important variables for prognosis and correlation with immunohistochemical analysis results with Ki67 and IDH1 markers were evaluated., Results: Histopathological examinations by immunohistochemistry of 56 patients were analyzed, 52% of which were women, with the age group 20-60 years being more prevalent. Grade 1 and 2 histological subtypes corresponded to most chondrosarcomas. The femur, humerus, and tibia were the most frequent anatomical sites. Most tumors (59%) were larger than 8 cm. Ki67 expression was very low (< 10%) in 98% of patients. The analysis of IDH1 was positive in 43% of the cases. The correlation between IDH1 positivity and tumor size was statistically significant, but regarding survival, we observed no significance., Conclusion: Immunohistochemical analysis using IDH1 and Ki67 markers in patients with conventional chondrosarcoma is not useful for prognostic guidance. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of physical exercise on the behavior of rodents with colorectal cancer induced through the use of elevated plus maze., Methods: We used 40 male hairless mice induced to colorectal cancer, divided into five groups: G1) submitted to pre- and post-induction swimming; G2) pre- and post-induction ladder; G3) post-induction swimming; G4) post-induction ladder; G5) sedentary. At the end of the 14th week, the animals were submitted to the plus maze test., Results: The mean length of stay in the open arm for G1 was 4.17 ± 6.50; G2 37.52 ± 40.7; G3 85.84 ± 42.5; G4 32.92 ± 23.17; and G5 4.09 ± 4.43. In the closed arm, it was 264 ± 23.43 in G1, 187.60 ± 47.73 in G2, 147.50 ± 40.03 in G3, 182.00 ± 40.40 in G4, and in G5 235.36 ± 14.28. In the center, G1 remained 31.86 ± 20.18, G2 74.85 ± 28.37, G3 66.69 ± 19.53, G4 60.55 ± 10.46, and G5 60.55 ± 23.65., Conclusions: Aerobic exercise for seven weeks after tumor induction showed less impact on the behavior of the animals. On the other hand, it significantly increased the animals' stress level when applied for 14 weeks before and after tumor induction.

Objective  To evaluate the treatment of patients with giant cell tumors of bone treated from 2009 to 2019 in a philanthropic hospital, as well as to try and determine the regional clinical and epidemiological profile, aiming to enrich the Brazilian data set and compare our findings with those of the literature. Methods  An analytical, observational, and cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection and a quantitative approach, analyzing medical records of patients with giant cell tumors treated at a philanthropic hospital from 2009 to 2019. Results  We evaluated 49 medical records; 55.1% of the patients were women, 53.1% were aged between 20 and 40 years, 69.4% of the cases were Campanacci grade III, and 30.6% affected the proximal end of the tibia. The rate of pathological fractures secondary to the tumor and pulmonary metastasis was low. More than 69% of the patients underwent intralesional surgery. Recurrence occurred in 16.3% of the cases. One of the major causes of aquatic biodiversity loss is the contamination of the environment by pesticides. Even though there is a considerable amount of studies on the subject, there are still few that deal with the effects of carbofuran on native species in Brazil. Although carbofuran is widely used in Brazil, its action on native organisms, such as the Atlantic Forest lambari Deuterodon iguape, has not yet been studied. This work aimed to evaluate the effects of exposure to carbofuran on the fish D. iguape, considering the behavior and specific oxygen consumption as end points. Opercular movements, dorsal fin movements, and swimming speed were analyzed as behavioral parameters. To assess specific oxygen consumption, fish were subjected to concentrations of 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 mg/L, for 24 h. For behavior analysis, fish remained exposed to carbofuran at concentrations of 0.0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 mg/L, in periods of 0, 2, 24, and 48 h. The behavior was studied through filming, analyzed with the free software, Tracker 4.92 (Open Source Physics). The results demonstrate an increase in opercular movements (18% ± 2.65) and a decrease in dorsal fin movements (- 21.2% ± 2.97), as well as in swimming speed (- 58.3% ± 1.83) of the experimental groups compared to the control group. There was an increase in oxygen consumption of 58.4% in fish exposed to the highest concentration of carbofuran. Thus, it is concluded that carbofuran altered D. iguape's behavior and oxygen consumption. The species was sensitive to carbofuran concentrations and can be used as a bioindicator., (© 2021. The objective of this study was to analyze the sublethal effects of propiconazole on Deuterodon iguape, a native fish common in Brazil, which has potential for aquaculture and use as a bioindicator. The hypothesis was to test whether D. iguape has a metabolism similar to Danio rerio so that its use in bioassays may be validated. Lethal concentration (LC50) and metabolic rates were studied in fish exposed to propiconazole. Specific oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion for D. iguape and D. rerio increased by 0.01 µg L -1 and then decreased as the propiconazole concentration increased. The decrease in the averages of specific oxygen consumption at the concentration of 0.1 µg L -1 represented a reduction in the metabolic rate compared to the control of 71% for D. iguape and 40% D. rerio. For the ammonia excretion, at the same concentration, there was a reduction of 68.7% and 45.4% for D. iguape and D. rerio, respectively. When comparing ammonia excretion of the two species for each concentration of propiconazole, there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in relation to the control and for the highest concentration (0.1 µg L -1 ). As for specific oxygen consumption, there was a statistically significant difference only for the concentration of 0.1 µg L -1 . D. iguape proved to be a good and useful bioindicator for ichthyologists or ecologists in studies of moderate pesticide contamination in freshwater aquatic environments, as its metabolic response was similar to D. rerio., (© 2021. Domestic and wild goats are very susceptible animals to predation, specially when pregnancy occurs. This study aimed to evaluate the use of goat fetal ovarian tissue for vitrification followed by xenotransplantation and fresh xenotransplantation in two immunosuppressed mice models (C57BL/6 SCID and Balb-C NUDE). Goat fetus ovaries were collected in slaughterhouses, divided into small cortical pieces and were destined for fresh xenotransplantation (FX) and cryopreservation followed by xenotransplantation (CX). Five recipients from each lineage were used for FX and 10 animals from each lineage for CX. The mice were euthanized after 65 postoperative days, and the transplants were collected for microscopic assessment. The blood plasma was collected for estradiol measurement. Independently of mice strain, all recipients presented complete estrus cycle in FX and 80% after CX groups. Follicles were observed at all development stages without morphological changes. The volume density and total vessel surface observed in the transplants were different (p <0.01) between groups. The estradiol levels in the recipients did not differ (p <0.05) among the treatments. Thus, it is possible to activate the preantral follicles in the ovaries of fetuses by optimizing germplasm utilization and conservation of domestic and endangered wild goats that are in predatory situations, undesirable drowning or accidental death, since provided conditions for xenotransplantation are performed., Competing Interests: Conflicts of interest: The authors have no conflict of interest to declare., (Copyright © The Author(s).)

Objective: To compare the classification of CTS by the Phalen test with electromyography., Methods: Cross-sectional observational study. Patients at orthopedic outpatient clinic with carpal tunnel syndrome were evaluated by the Phalen test and compared with the result of the electroneuromyography., Results: Sample of 33 patients, mostly women (87.9%). Most patients were already diagnosed with severe CTS by ENMG. The results of the Phalen test and the electromyography were equal in 26 of the 33 patients (78.8%)., Conclusion: The Phalen test showed its applicability, since it had results similar to those of ENMG in most cases, especially in the most severe ones. The exam studied is a possible tool for the classification and recommendation of surgical treatment. This study evaluated the effect of the extract of Aloe vera at concentrations of 10% and 20% on the cryopreservation of sperm from the epididymis of domestic cats. Epididymal spermatozoa were recovered using the flotation technique and used in the treatments: control (TRIS-egg yolk at 20%), T10% (TRIS plus 10% of A. vera extract), and T20% (TRIS plus 20% of A. vera extract). The spermatozoa were subjected to 4ºC for 60 minutes, followed by 20 minutes in nitrogen vapors, and stored in a cryogenic cylinder. The samples were thawed at 37°C for 30 seconds. The sperm motility decreased ( P <0.05) after thawing in the three treatments. Only the spermatozoa in the control treatment maintained post-thawing vigor. The viability of spermatozoa decreased in the treatments with A. vera ( P <0.05). According to the hypoosmotic test, all treatments maintained the sperm membrane functionality ( P >0.05) during freezing; however, after thawing, it decreased ( P <0.05) in the T10% and T20% treatments. The morphology and chromatin condensation of spermatozoa did not differ, regardless of the treatments and time of evaluation ( P >0.05). The effect of the crude A. vera extract was not satisfactory on the cryopreservation of epididymal spermatozoa of domestic cats after thawing; although the motility of spermatozoa was similar to that found with the use of egg yolk, and it presented maintenance of the chromatin integrity. Introduction: We investigated the occurrence of coronary sinus abnormalities in the indeterminate form of Chagas disease (CD)., Methods: Differences between the maximum and minimum diameters of the coronary sinus (∆%) on echocardiography were evaluated in individuals with the indeterminate form of CD (n=14) and those without (n=16) CD. The association of the difference with abnormalities detected by echocardiography and myocardial scintigraphy was assessed., Results: The mean Δ% values did not differ significantly between the groups. There was no correlation of the measurements with echocardiographic and myocardial scintigraphy findings., Conclusions: The coronary sinus evaluation revealed no differences between the groups.

The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of eCG on vascularization and development of feline ovarian tissue xenografted to immunosuppressed mice. Feline ovarian fragments (∼1 mm 3 ) were transplanted under the renal capsule of 20 adult, ovariectomized, C57BL/6 SCID female mice. At 45 d after transplantation, 10 mice (controls) were euthanized and the remainder given 10 IU of eCG (and sacrificed 48 h later). Transplants were recovered immediately after death, fixed, sectioned, and stained with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS). Fragment volume (Cavallieri principle) and vascularization were assessed. Mean xenotransplant volume for control and treatment groups was 0.17 ± 0.03 and 0.37 ± 0.13 mm 3 , respectively (P = 0.0952); vascular volume density, 30.3 ± 11.3 and 49.1 ± 8.9% (P = 0.0281); surface density, 4.1 ± 2.4 and 6.2 ± 1.7 μm -1  (P = 0.2222); and vessel total surface, 0.63 ± 0.24 μm 2 and 2.28 ± 1.05 μm 2  (P = 0.0079). Ovarian xenografting is an auxiliary reproductive technique that allows the conservation of germplasm of high-value livestock and endangered species. The use of exogenous gonadotropins assists in developing xenografted tissues and obtaining viable follicles for in vitro embryo production; however, this use has not been reported in the xenografting of cats' (Felis catus) ovaries with C57BL/6 female SCID mice (Mus musculus) as recipients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the responses of queens' ovaries to eCG when grafted into C57BL/6 female SCID mice. Ovarian cortex fragments from queens were grafted under the kidney capsule of 15 C57BL/6 SCID mice after bilateral ovariectomy. After 45 days, the recipients were divided into two groups: those that did not receive hormone induction (eCG-), which were euthanized at the time of induction, and those that received hormonal induction (eCG+), which were euthanized 48 hours later. All the tissues collected were histologically processed. The proportions of the different ovarian follicles were compared by chi-square test. The morphology of the follicles was compared between the experimental groups by Tukey (primordial, primary, and secondary follicles) and Kruskal-Wallis (antral follicles) tests. Macroscopically, we observed a few antral follicles that were over 1 mm in size in grafts treated with eCG. Microscopically, follicles of all categories were observed in the grafts, and all had normal morphology for the species studied. However, larger primordial and primary follicles were observed in the eCG+ transplants than those in the eCG- transplants. There was a decrease in primordial follicles and an increase in the other follicles, particularly in the antral follicles of the eCG+ group, a phenomenon that we propose to term "follicular right shift". Luteinized follicles were also observed in grafts treated with eCG. Therefore, treatment with eCG is effective for follicular development but does not provoke a good superovulatory response, so the correct application time should be identified. Objective: Bisphosphonates (BPs) have been widely used in the treatment of bone disorders due to their ability to modulate bone turnover. The biological mechanisms through BFs exert their effects on osteoclasts are well established. However, the role of BFs on the osteoblasts is controversial. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of risedronate on osteoblastic cells., Design: MC3TE-E1 cells were exposed to risedronate at 0, 10(-8), 10(-6), 10(-4), and 10(-3)M. The following parameters were assayed: (1) cell proliferation by hemocytometer counting after 24, 48 and 72h, (2) cell viability by MTT assay after 24, 48 and 72h, (3) Type I Collagen quantification by ELISA after 24, 48 and 72h, (3) alkaline phosphatase activity after 7 and 10days and (4) matrix mineralization after 14days., Results: After 24h, risedronate did not affect both cell proliferation and viability (p>0.05). However, after 48 and 72h, a decrease in cell proliferation and viability was detected in osteoblastic cultures exposed to risedronate at 10(-4) and 10(-3)M (p<0.05). After 48 and 72h, Type I Collagen synthesis was stimulated by risedronate at 10(-4)M (p<0.05). High levels of ALP activity were detected in cultures exposed to risedronate at 10(-4)M after 7 and 10days (p<0.05). After 14day, high calcium content was observed in cultures exposed to risedronate at 10(-4)M (p>0.05)., Conclusion: These results indicated that risedronate can promote osteoblast differentiation., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Statement of Problem: Since the introduction of glass fiber posts, irreversible vertical root fractures have become a rare occurrence; however, adhesive failure has become the primary failure mode., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the push-out bond strength of glass fiber posts cemented with different luting agents on 3 segments of the root., Material and Methods: Eighty human maxillary canines with similar root lengths were randomly divided into 8 groups (n=10) according to the cement assessed (Rely X luting, Luting and Lining, Ketac Cem, Rely X ARC, Biscem, Duo-link, Rely X U100, and Variolink II). After standardized post space preparation, the root dentin was pretreated for dual-polymerizing resin cements and untreated for the other cements. The mixed luting cement paste was inserted into post spaces with a spiral file and applied to the post surface that was seated into the canal. After 7 days, the teeth were sectioned perpendicular to their long axis into 1-mm-thick sections. The push-out test was performed at a speed of 0.5 mm/min until extrusion of the post occurred. The results were evaluated by 2-way ANOVA and the all pairwise multiple comparison procedures (Tukey test) (α=.05)., Results: ANOVA showed that the type of interaction between cement and root location significantly influenced the push-out strength (P<.05). The highest push-out strength results with root location were obtained with Luting and Lining (S3) (19.5 ±4.9 MPa), Ketac Cem (S2) (18.6 ±5.5 MPa), and Luting and Lining (S1) (18.0 ±7.6 MPa). The lowest mean values were recorded with Variolink II (S1) (4.6 ±4.0 MPa), Variolink II (S2) (1.6 ±1.5 MPa), and Rely X ARC (S3) (0.9 ±1.1 MPa)., Conclusions: Self-adhesive cements and glass ionomer cements showed significantly higher values compared to dual-polymerizing resin cements. In all root segments, dual-polymerizing resin cements provided significantly lower bond strength. Objective: Make an analysis of the factors that influence their survival and prognosis of patients with osteosarcoma treated at a Charity Hospital in Teresina-PI., Methods: We analyzed medical records of 32 patients diagnosed with osteosarcoma in the period January 2005 to December 2010., Results: Patients were aged between 6 and 73 years, with 56.2% men and 43.7% women. The prevailing color was black, with 62.5% of cases. With regard to histological subtype, the majority were osteoblastic type (71.8%). The anatomical location of the tumor was prevalent region of the knee (distal femur and proximal tibia). Regarding the size of the tumor, tumors were 43.8% bigger than 15 cm. Degree of necrosis Huvos concentrated primarily among the types I and II, 53.1% and 25% respectively. The overall survival at two and four years was 45.5% and 39% respectively and event- free survival at two and four years was 39.8% and 19.9% respectively., Conclusion: We considered the worst prognosis, the presence of metastases at diagnosis and tumors larger than 15 cm. And the criteria of Huvos did not reach statistical significance for the prognosis of patients.

Objectives: To determine the micro-hardness profile of two dual cure resin cements (RelyX-U100, 3M-eSPe and Panavia F 2.0, Kuraray) used for cementing fiberre inforced resin posts (Fibrekor-Jeneric Pentron) under three different curing protocols and two water storage times., Material and Methods: Sixty 16 mm long bovine incisor roots were endodontically treated and prepared for cementation of the Fibrekor posts. The cements were mixed as instructed, dispensed in the canal, the posts were seated and the curing performed as follows: (a) no light activation; (b) light-activation immediately after seating the post, and; (c) light-activation delayed 5 minutes after seating the post. The teeth were stored in water and retrieved for analysis after 7 days and 3 months. The roots were longitudinally sectioned and the microhardness was determined at the cervical, middle and apical regions along the cement line. The data was analyzed by the three-way ANOVA test (curing mode, storage time and thirds) for each cement. The Tukey test was used for the post-hoc analysis., Results: Light-activation resulted in a significant increase in the microhardness. This was more evident for the cervical region and for the Panavia cement. Storage in water for 3 months caused a reduction of the micro-hardness for both cements. The U100 cement showed less variation in the micro-hardness regardless of the curing protocol and storage time., Conclusions: The micro-hardness of the cements was affected by the curing and storage variables and were material-dependent.

Objective: To assess the prevalence of oral colonisation by bacterial respiratory pathogens in hospitalised patients., Methods: Thirty patients undergoing myocardium revascularisation surgery were evaluated. At baseline (pre-operative phase), full-mouth clinical periodontal assessment was performed. Saliva and biofilm samples were obtained from subjects at baseline and at the post-operative phase, after orotracheal extubation. DNA was extracted from samples and species of Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus aureus and Dialister pneumosintes were detected by PCR or culture (for staphylococci isolates)., Results: Most of the subjects were males, with history of hypertension and smoking. Thirteen were edentulous (ED) and 17 were dentate (DE), with moderate chronic periodontitis. The most prevalent bacteria in saliva were Staphylococcus spp. (85.7%), Pseudomonas spp. (83.8%), and Acinetobacter spp. (53.3%). There was a trend for D. pneumosintes to be more frequently detected in DE (43.7%) than ED (11.5%) patients. In plaque samples, DE with >14 teeth showed a higher prevalence of Pseudomonas spp. (100%) than individuals with < or =14 teeth (69.1%; p=0.048). Conversely, P. aeruginosa was more prevalent in subjects with fewer teeth (35.5%) than with >14 teeth (5.7%; p=0.037). All staphylococci isolates were coagulase-negative, and about 11% were positive for the mecA gene. These mecA-positive isolates showed a tendency to increase in all samples, whereas P. aeruginosa reduced after surgery. Context: Primary malignancy in giant cell tumor (PMGCT) is rare. It is defined as a high-grade sarcoma originating in a giant cell tumor (GCT) and seems to behave less aggressively than its secondary counterpart does., Case Report: This report presents the case of a 39-year-old female with pain in her left shoulder for one month. Radiography showed a pathological fracture of the proximal humerus associated with an osteolytic lesion. Histopathological analysis showed typical areas of GCT juxtaposed with a sarcomatous component., Conclusions: PMGCT seems to behave less aggressively than secondary malignancy in GCT, and it may simulate its more common benign counterpart clinically and radiographically. However, it requires a more aggressive type of treatment.
