An analysis of a large set of biometric data obtained during the enrolment and the verification phase in an experimental biometric system installed in bank branches is presented. Subjective opinions of bank clients and of bank tellers were also surveyed concerning the studied biometric methods in order to discover and to explore relations emerging from the obtained multimodal dataset. First, data acquisition and identity verification methods are described in this study. Then, relationships between ratios of successful and failed verifications between pairs, triplets, and quartets of biometric modalities are studied. An analysis of the sentiment of clients and of banking tellers related to each identity verification attempt was performed based on linguistic methods. The data mining process is described, based on the rough sets methodology, aimed at deriving rules pertaining to consecutive identity verification attempts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study uses the data of the 2016 Surveys of Consumers' Use of Mobile Financial Services that were conducted by the US Federal Reserve, to investigate the effects of using mobile financial services on the probability of visiting a branch. A logit model yields the following findings. Firstly, the relationships of mobile banking usage with the probability of visiting a branch is weakly substitutional, and mobile payment usage is irrelevant to this probability. Secondly, the older the survey respondents are, the more likely they visit a branch. Thirdly, mobile payment services provided by nonfinancial institutions have insignificant effects on the probability of using a branch. The aim of this paper is to assess the relative efficiency of the branches of Komercijalna Banka AD Skopje during a three-year period (from 2009 to 2011). The research sample consists of eight branches performing the same financial activities during the reporting period. The mathematical technique DEA window analysis was used in the first phase in order to allow monitoring of the trend of the relative efficiency of each branch under consideration. From the bank management point of view, unexpected results were obtained in this phase; to validate the results the AHP-DEA validation model was proposed and used in the second phase. The management verified the obtained results claiming they were especially valuable in the process of making justifiable decisions for the further successful performance of the bank. Taking recent advances on the connection of social dynamics and physical place in the geographies of knowledge creation debate as a starting point, the paper scrutinises bank branches as locations where social dynamics and physical place coincide. It presents original data gained inter alia by means of participatory observation on the credit-decision processes of both a private big bank operating nationwide and a regional savings bank in Germany. Our results first highlight the general role of physical characteristics of bank branches – most notably the arrangement in the workplace and the resulting degrees of accessibility and confidentiality – in processes of knowledge exchange and creation. In addition, our insights reveal that both bank executives and bank customers are well aware of this connection between physical characteristics and social dynamics, and thus strategically design their branches and select certain sites for negotiations. The present research is seeking to assess the technical efficiency of Bank Sepah branches (in Tehran province) and to identify the factors which exert influence on it. Data over the period 2005-2007 relating to 52 different branches of Tehran province sepah Bank. In order to do this, the estimated stochastic cost function with the use of Maximum Likelihood (ML) method has been exercised in this research. The results obtained from the first model, that is the inefficiency of variant with time, indicate that the Bank Sepah branches have not given facilities with the least cost, considering the main thesis of research. The average efficiency of branches has been 77.1 percents in the first model and the efficiency of branches has been decreased throughout the time. The results of the second model have shown structural effects and the average efficiency of branches has been 64.2 percents. The reason for the difference between the first and second models has been the influence of structural variants of the branches (economic size, the ratio of fixed assets to total assets, employees’ education, level of mechanization).

In this study, we examine the relation between countries' income levels and their residents' and companies' access to finance. First, we look at how OECD membership affects access to finance. For this purpose, we compare access to finance measures in high-income OECD-member countries and in high-income non-OECD-member countries. We find that residents of high-income OECD-member countries tend to have better access to finance when compared to residents of high-income non-OECD-member countries (in 3 out of 4 measures). We find no significant difference between the two groups in terms of companies' access to finance. Next, we examine how income level of countries affect access to finance. We compare high-income countries to low- and middle-income countries in terms of "access to finance". Our results show that individuals in high-income countries have better access to finance when compared to individuals in low- and middle-income countries. Interestingly, our results show that value traded of top 10 traded companies to total value traded (%) is higher for high-income countries compared to low- and middleincome countries. This paper presents an integrated decision support methodology for locating bank branches. The methodology is composed of two stages: problem structuring, and modeling. In the first stage, initially, a number of criteria are selected with the help of a detailed literature review and expert opinions. Subsequently, importance weights of these criteria for different types of bank branches are identified based on judgments of experts for pairwise comparison questions. At the modeling stage, considering the characteristics and importance of the criteria, a novel multi-objective mathematical programming model is proposed to find specific locations of bank branches. The proposed methodology is applied in locating branches of a Turkish bank. The paper is a part of an on-going study of the performance assessment of Slovak bank branches. With aim to assess better the performance of the bank branches from different angles, the efficiencyprofitability managerial decision-making matrices is used. The efficiency analysis adopts the SBM non-oriented model under the standpoint of production approach. Efficiency scores together with the profit indicators of each bank branch enable to gain a comprehensive picture of network performance. DEA results suggest that there is considerable space for an improvement of the bank branches efficiency. Moreover, between the efficiency and the profitability a medium correlation was found. Congestion is generally used in the economics and indicates a situation where a decrease (increase) in one or more inputs can increase (decrease) one or more outputs. In this paper, we introduce a new concept using data envelopment analysis, and call it revenue congestion. The new concept implies a situation where reduction in some inputs may result in an increase in revenue. This improvement in revenue is rather possible by a simultaneous increase and decrease in outputs due to a reduction in inputs. Then, we try to propose a method to distinguish the revenue congestion and identify its sources and amounts. To illustrate the use of the proposed method, an empirical application corresponding to 30 Iranian bank branches is provided. 16 branches evidence revenue congestion via the proposed approach. This identification is very significant because these branches can increase the revenue of their outputs by eliminating the amounts of revenue congestion in each of their inputs. Moreover, it is found that an increase in all outputs is not always profitable, but rather in some cases a decrease in some outputs and an increase in some other outputs can help the firms to make more profits. Efficiency measurement has been an essential topic in banking research. Many studies have used the data envelopment analysis approach as an effective tool for the efficiency measurement of bank branches. Recently, the Network (NDEA) method has been introduced, which involves internal processes and intermediate factors in the efficiency measurement. A few studies have used this method for the efficiency measurement of bank branches; they have considered two processes in branches and used two-stage models. In this study, we will use a more general approach and a more complete network structure consisting of three processes, including the deposit attraction process, deposit allocation process and banking services provision process. Since we want to obtain efficient targets, an envelopment form of the NDEA model had to be used. Therefore, a slack-based NDEA model, as introduced by Tone and Tsutsui (SBM-NDEA), was nominated to support its mathematical model. But according to the new categorization of the efficiency measurement factors introduced in this paper, and also regarding some previous reviews on SBM-NDEA model, the model will be modified to include the desired properties. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine whether branch expansions have realized efficiency gains by focussing on regional banks in Japan. Design/methodology/approach – The authors use a single-step estimation procedure, where both cost frontier parameters and inefficiency effects are addressed simultaneously, and examine the impact of expanding branch networks on bank performance. Findings – The findings show that regional banks expanding their branch networks to certain levels exhibit lower cost inefficiencies. Robustness results are also obtained from the samples, excluding the regional banks located in urban regions. Originality/value – The findings suggest that adequate levels of branch expansion have beneficial impacts for regional banks, although this result is contrary to the current region-based relationship banking policy promoted by Japan’s financial regulators. Although technology has improved and distribution channels have become alternative opportunities for reaching bank services, the branch offices are still important for the banks to gain new customers and keep in touch with them. Growth in population and urbanization in Turkey forces the banks to increase the number of their branch offices in service to reach new customers. Finding the best location for bank branches depends on a number of distinct measures. This paper presents a methodology to find the best location of bank branches. For this aim, firstly, a number of criteria are selected by the help of a detailed literature review and expert judgments. Subsequently priorities of these criteria for four different types of bank branches are identified based on expert judgments using pairwise comparisons. The priorities are used in a new mathematical model developed to decide the best branch locations of bank branches. Since optimal solution cannot be easily found for big regions, a Tabu Search heuristic approach is developed. The use of strategies to set directions and goals, as well as to plan for the future is inherent in organizations. Most managers have a much greater knowledge on how to develop a strategy of how to implement it and make it work. The formulation of the strategy should be consistent, clear and focused. Controls and monitoring are intended to demonstrate this integration. The present study aims to examine the strategic alignment in bank branches as well as the actions taken to meet the targets. Part of this study also examines how corporate strategy is communicated, implemented and as the main responsible and respective structures respond to these procedures and also identify best practices in the banks studied, considering the strategic goal of growing customer base corporations. The research methodology used in the article was done through interviews with managers and was conducted in fifteen branches of medium and large companies located in the city of Curitiba, State of Parana, Brazil. The results show that the corporate strategy is synergy with the efforts at the operational level. The energy consumption of buildings is an area of increasing importance, and developing economies like Brazil must start to consider the energy performance of existing buildings. The publication of national energy benchmarks is a fundamental step for understanding energy consumption in commercial buildings and developing energy efficiency programmes. A voluntary data gathering initiative by the Brazilian Sustainable Construction Council (CBCS) is producing the data necessary to develop national benchmarks. A methodology for benchmark development is proposed, using both statistical data and energy audit data to benchmark end-use energy consumption, with the use of wet-bulb cooling degree hours for climate correction. Benchmarks and climate corrections are developed for the energy consumption of bank branches in Brazil. A simple linear regression analysis of data from 1890 bank branches in 57 different climates provides the energy consumption benchmark, while thermal simulation of building performance is used to validate the results and provide an end-use breakdown in the different climates studied. One of the important issues of today's world is efficiency measurement of different organizations and the comparison between their units. On the other hand, banks play pivotal role in improvement of economic signals in each country. Therefore, considering this role and the number of banks in Iran, efficiency measurement of banks becomes important. The Main goal of this paper is studying the effects of considering the importance of data in the DEA model. This paper accomplished in five stages. The main stages of this paper include recognition and measuring the importance of effective factors on bank efficiency, measuring the bank branches efficiencies and analyzing the effects of using importance of data in DEA technique. Therefore, at first, the conceptual system of efficiency evaluation has been defined and after measuring the importance of data in efficiency of bank branches using Fuzzy Topsis technique, efficiency of branches formulized and calculated in the context of DEA models. Ultimately for analyzing effects of using importance of data, efficiency of branches recalculated without recognizing the results of Fuzzy Topsis. Results show that using the importance of data can make the efficiency measurement of bank branches more precise and so increases it's validity.

Data envelopment analysis is a non-parametric technique for evaluating peer decision making units (DMUs) with using multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. In the real world, DMUs usually have complex structures. One of these structures is a two-stage process with intermediate measures. In this structure, there are two stages and each stage uses inputs to produce outputs, separately where the outputs of the first stage are the inputs for the second stage. Cooperative model such as centralized model and non-cooperative model are game theoretic approaches to evaluate two-stage processes. Non-cooperative model supposes that one of the stages is the leader and another stage is the follower, whereas in the centralized model, both stages are evaluated simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a game theoretic model based on the Nash bargaining game to calculate weights when parallel stages with shared inputs compete to reach a high efficiency in the competitive strategy. Two data sets including the bank branches and thermal power plants in Iran are used to show the abilities of proposed model. Abstract: This paper aims to explore the true managerial efficiencies of the branches of a case bank in Taiwan. With 123 branches of the case bank comprising the sample, the study finds that, after the adjustment of environmental factors and statistical noise, managerial efficiency values from a three-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) varies significantly from the traditional DEA model. This finding suggests that environmental variables have significant effect on branch efficiency. Moreover, scale inefficiency is the major cause of operating inefficiency in the case bank, and most branches are operating at the stage of increasing return to scale. With regards the branches’ business scope, those that operate loan and wealth management services have better managerial efficiency than those that focus on wealth management only. In terms of deposit amount, branches with a higher deposit amount generate better managerial efficiency. Finally, the results for regional location show no significant effect on branches’ managerial efficiency in Taiwan. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose – The purpose of the research presented in this paper is to provide a new approach related to the definition of variables in disaggregating branch expenses and income for evaluating the overall technical efficiency of bank branches by means of data envelopment analysis (DEA). Design/methodology/approach – By applying an input minimization DEA model to a sample of bank branches of a large commercial bank in Greece, this study identifies pure technical and scale inefficiencies, efficiency and size relationship and returns to scale patterns. Moreover, it explores target setting strategies for inefficient branches. Findings – Results indicate that branch size has an important influence on efficiency and that superior insights can be obtained by pure technical efficiency (PTE) and scale efficiency (SE), as constituent components of global technical efficiency (TE) than the information obtained from the analysis based on selected key performance indicators (KPIs) used by the bank under study. Research limitations/implications – A direction of future research would be to extend the analysis to incorporate environmental factors, such as branch location, local competitive environment, investment portfolio risk, among others, into the DEA assessment. Practical implications – The study shows that DEA which provides an overall summary measure with respect to global TE and its constituent components PTE and SE can be used to complement the in-house performance management system of the bank under study for the evaluation of its branch network. Originality/value – From a policy perspective, this study highlights the use of DEA combined with statistical analysis to support the reduction of burden by means of either expense reduction or revenue enhancement. Bank branch performance evaluation is a difficult endeavour. Some of the main reasons for this difficulty are the complexity inherent in the variety of aspects considered in the evaluation, and the multiple and conflicting interests of the different stakeholders involved. In this paper, we show how cognitive mapping and measuring attractiveness by a categorical-based evaluation technique can be used to support the evaluation of bank branches through the development of multidimensional performance evaluation systems, and to deal explicitly with the trade-offs between the different dimensions of performance and interests of different stakeholders. A case study is discussed where these techniques are used in a constructive way, making the learning activity easier and introducing transparency in the decision-making process. Abstract: Energy performance of non-residential buildings and in particular of office buildings used as bank branches is very limited. This paper presents new data from 39 representative bank branches and results from a more in-depth analysis of information from energy audits in 11 typical bank branches throughout Greece. The data was used to derive practical energy benchmarks and assess various energy conservation measures. Accordingly, the average annual total energy consumption is 345kWh/m2. The breakdown of the different end-uses reveals that HVAC averages 48% of the final energy consumption, lighting averages 35% and other office and electronic equipment average 17%. The most effective energy conservation measures reach annual energy savings of 56kWh/m2 by regulating the indoor set point temperature, while the use of HF electronic ballasts and CFL lamps may save about 22kWh/m2 and 29kWh/m2 with and without the use of the external marquee sign, respectively. This study undertakes an analysis of the association between socio-economic variables and the spatial distribution of bank branches in South Africa. To analyse retail bank branch location, parametric Poisson, negative binomial, Poisson-hurdle, and finite-mixture count models that accommodate unobserved heterogeneity have been estimated with a data set of bank branches in municipalities in South Africa. The key finding is that aggregate income in a municipal area is a statistically significant determinant of the number of bank branches. The results also suggest that the four core banks tend to cluster their branches in the same areas—suggesting the possibility of oligopolistic collusion. A more recent entrant locates its urban branches slightly away from the cluster and in some areas where the core banks have no presence. In addition, several socio-economic variables, some of which are unique to South Africa, do not appear to affect branch location. Situation des filiales de banques: une analyse a comptage RESUME La presente etude entreprend une analyse de l'association entre des variables socio-economiques et la repartition de filiales de banques en Republique Sud Africaine. Pour analyser l'emplacement des filiales du secteur de la banque de detail, on a evalue des modeles de comptage de Poisson, de probabilites binomiales negatives, au taux etalon de Poisson, et aux melanges finis, qui tiennent compte de l'heterogeneite non observee au moyen d'un ensemble de donnees de filiales de banques dans des municipalites en Afrique du Sud. La principale conclusion est que le revenu total dans une zone municipale est un determinant significatif statistiquement du nombre de filiales de banques. Les resultats semblent egalement indiquer que les quatre principales banques ont tendance a grouper leurs filiales dans les memes regions, ce qui semblerait indiquer la possibilite d'une collusion oligopolistique. Une banque arrivee plus recemment a reparti ses filiales legerement hors de ce groupement, ou les principales banques ne sont pas representees. En outre, plusieurs variables socio-economiques, certaines desquelles sont particulieres a l'Afrique du Sud, ne semblent pas affecter l'emplacement des filiales. Para analizar la ubicacion de sucursales de bancos minoristas, se han estimado modelos de recuento como el parametrico de Poisson, binomial negativo, Poisson-hurdle (modelo en dos partes) y mezcla finita, que conllevan una heterogeneidad inadvertida, con un conjunto de datos de sucursales bancarias de municipalidades de Sudafrica. El descubrimiento clave consiste en que los ingresos agregados en un area municipal representan un determinante estadisticamente significativo del numero de sucursales bancarias. Los resultados tambien sugieren que los cuatro bancos principales tienden a agrupar sus sucursales en las mismas areas, indicando la posibilidad de una colusion oligopolistica. Traditional approaches to calculate total factor productivity (TFP) change through Malmquist indexes rely on distance functions. In this paper we show that the use of distance functions as a means to calculate TFP change may introduce some bias in the analysis, and therefore we propose a procedure that calculates TFP change through observed values only. Our total TFP change is then decomposed into efficiency change, technological change, and a residual effect. This decomposition makes use of a non-oriented measure in order to avoid problems associated with the traditional use of radial oriented measures, especially when variable returns to scale technologies are to be compared. This paper is drawn from the use of data envelopment analysis (DEA) in helping a Portuguese bank to manage the performance of its branches. The bank wanted to set targets for the branches on such variables as growth in number of clients, growth in funds deposited and so on. Such variables can take positive and negative values but apart from some exceptions, traditional DEA models have hitherto been restricted to non-negative data. The branch network of a bank was used to investigate the link between employee commitment and organizational performance in terms of sales targets met and change in profits. Commitment was measured by the conventional Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCO) and different variations of a specifically designed new commitment scale. The approach taken involved the application of multiple regression analysis. That way a variety of factors assumed to contribute to performance, apart from commitment, could be included in the model and held constant. It emerged that employee commitment is significantly related to the financial success of bank branches. The results varied depending on how commitment and performance were measured.
