Externally physical fields such as stress field, electric field and magnetic field have been demonstrated influence the equilibria and kinetics of solid-state transformations in metals and alloys. This review focuses on the effects of externally physical fields on the aging precipitation of aerospace Al alloys including 2xxx Al-Cu alloys, 7xxx Al-Zn-Mg alloys as well as the advanced Al-Li alloys. While the η' phase in Al-Zn-Mg alloy and the T1 phase in Al-Li alloy showed no obvious stress-orientating effect, the precipitation of θ' phase in Al-Cu alloy showed obvious stress-orientating effect depending on the applied stress direction. Regarding precipitation kinetics, aging under stress field, electric field and magnetic field all can enhance the aging precipitation of aerospace Al alloys. The understanding of the effects of externally physical field on the aging precipitation in Al alloys is very preliminary. It appears that while the stress field acts on the thermally activated transformation, the athermal effect associating with electromigration of electromagnetic field has been considered responsible for the enhanced aging precipitat ion. Fe-20Cr-25Ni-Nb steel is an important material for developing highly compact and efficient nuclear power systems by using the supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle. The in-core materials should possess excellent oxidation resistance in a high-temperature CO2 environment. In this work, a new 20Cr-25Ni-Nb steel with a minor Mo addition was developed, and its oxidation behavior was investigated in a pure CO2 environment at 650 °C under 3.5 MPa. The experimental results show that the oxidation kinetics of the steels followed the parabolic law with the test time, and the oxidation process was controlled by diffusion. The 20Cr-25Ni-Nb steel showed better oxidation resistance after Mo addition, which was attributed to the synergistic effects of Nb and Mo during the oxide scale formation process. In a high-temperature environment, the volatilization of Mo promoted the outward diffusion of Nb, resulting in the formation of an Nb-rich layer at the oxide/metal interface, which slowed the outward diffusion of Fe for the formation of the outermost Fe-oxide layer. Although the volatile nature of Mo at high temperatures promoted the outward diffusion of Nb, the addition of Mo had no significant influence on the overall structure of the oxide scales, which consisted of an outer Cr-rich oxide layer and an inner spinel oxide layer. Polymer materials with excellent physicochemical and electrical properties are desirable for energy storage applications in advanced electronics and power systems. Here, Al2O3@ZrO2 nanoparticles (A@Z) with a core-shell structure are synthesized and introduced to a P(VDF-HFP) matrix to fabricate P(VDF-HFP)/A@Z nanocomposite films. Experimental and simulation results confirm that A@Z nanoparticles increase the crystallinity and crystallization temperature owing to the effect of the refined crystal size. The incorporation of A@Z nanoparticles leads to conformational changes of molecular chains of P(VDF-HFP), which influences the dielectric relaxation and trap parameters of the nanocomposites. The calculated total trapped charges increase from 13.63 μC of the neat P(VDF-HFP) to 47.55 μC of P(VDF-HFP)/5 vol%-A@Z nanocomposite, indicating a substantial improvement in trap density. The modulated crystalline characteristic and interfaces between nanoparticles and polymer matrix are effective in inhibiting charge motion and impeding the electric conduction channels, which contributes to an improved electrical property and energy density of the nanocomposites. Specifically, a ~200% and ~31% enhancement in discharged energy density and breakdown strength are achieved in the P(VDF-HFP)/5 vol%-A@Z nanocomposite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electrochemical tests and surface analyses were carried out to study the influence of the external low-voltage spatial electric field (SEF) on the corrosion behaviour of copper in 3.5 wt-% NaCl solution and explore the corrosion kinetics of copper under the SEF. The results show that the presence of the SEF aggravated the corrosion of copper; the results of weight loss tests and electrochemical tests indicated the enhanced corrosion rate of copper as the field strength increased. The X-ray diffraction results of corrosion products suggested that the Cu2O converted to Cu2(OH)3Cl with application of the SEF. The effect of the SEF on the copper proved the increase in corrosion rate was attributed to the enhanced migration of ions towards the sample surface caused by the external SEF. It resulted in more aggressive chloride ions to penetrate into the looser surface corrosion product film, thereby accelerating corrosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Filamentous fungal pathogens secrete effectors that modulate host immunity and facilitate infection. Fusarium graminearum is an important plant pathogen responsible for various devastating diseases. However, little is known about the function of effector proteins secreted by F. graminearum. Herein, we identified several effector candidates in the F. graminearum secretome. Among them, the secreted ribonuclease Fg12 was highly upregulated during the early stages of F. graminearum infection in soybean; its deletion compromised the virulence of F. graminearum. Transient expression of Fg12 in Nicotiana benthamiana induced cell death in a light‐dependent manner. Fg12 possessed ribonuclease (RNase) activity, degrading total RNA. The enzymatic activity of Fg12 was required for its cell death‐promoting effects. Importantly, the ability of Fg12 to induce cell death was independent of BAK1/SOBIR1, and treatment of soybean with recombinant Fg12 protein induced resistance to various pathogens, including F. graminearum and Phytophthora sojae.
