Compared to conventional crops, less is known about how genetic and environmental variability affect the yield and quality of specialty crops like cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.). Herein, we performed a multifaceted analysis of six commercial cranberry beds planted to the Stevens cultivar. The six beds included three with above‐average multiyear yields and three that were lower than average. We considered genotype, edaphic factors, and plant nutrient content as driving variables of yield and fruit quality. We found that genetic purity within beds raised the odds of obtaining above‐average yields over an 8‐year period. The highest levels of genetic contamination (38%–75%) were found at the low‐yield beds, where significant differences in yield and fruit quality were observed between genotypes, within beds. Across all beds, focusing only on plots genetically confirmed to be Stevens cultivar, we also found that plot‐scale yield in 2020 was significantly higher for two of three high‐yield beds, suggesting other factors besides genetic contamination influenced differences in bed‐scale yield. A factor analysis of mixed data that jointly included genotype, edaphic variables, and plant tissue nutrient content revealed complex relations among these variables that were tied to grouping plots based on long‐term yield. Findings highlight the need for further research into the complex genetic and environmental factors that control cranberry yield and fruit quality. Kawasaki disease (KD) is a paediatric vasculitis with coronary artery aneurysms (CAA) as its main complication. Two guidelines exist regarding the follow-up of patients after KD, by the American Heart Association and the Japanese Circulation Society. After the acute phase, CAA-negative patients are checked for cardiovascular risk assessment or with ECG and echocardiography until 5 years after the disease. In CAA-positive patients, monitoring includes myocardial perfusion imaging, conventional angiography and CT-angiography. However, the invasive nature and high radiation exposure do not reflect technical advances in cardiovascular imaging. Newer techniques, such as cardiac MRI, are mentioned but not directly implemented in the follow-up. Cardiac MRI can be performed to identify CAA, but also evaluate functional abnormalities, ischemia and previous myocardial infarction including adenosine stress-testing. Low-dose CT angiography can be implemented at a young age when MRI without anaesthesia is not feasible. CT calcium scoring with a very low radiation dose can be useful in risk stratification years after the disease. By incorporating newer imaging techniques, detection of CAA will be improved while reducing radiation burden and potential complications of invasive imaging modalities. Based on the current knowledge, a possible pathway to follow-up patients after KD is introduced. Abstract Background Mitochondrial damage and dysfunction have been reported in airway and quadriceps muscle cells of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We determined the concomitance of mitochondrial dysfunction in these cells in COPD. Methods Bronchial biopsies were obtained from never- and ex-smoker volunteers and COPD patients (GOLD Grade 2) and quadriceps muscle biopsies from the same volunteers in addition to COPD patients at GOLD Grade 3/4 for measurement of mitochondrial function. Results Decreased mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) and decreased superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) levels were observed in mitochondria isolated from bronchial biopsies from Grade 2 patients compared to healthy never- and ex-smokers. There was a significant correlation between ΔΨm and FEV1 (% predicted), transfer factor of the lung for carbon monoxide (TLCOC % predicted), 6-min walk test and maximum oxygen consumption. In addition, ΔΨm was also associated with decreased expression levels of electron transport chain (ETC) complex proteins I and II. In quadriceps muscle of Grade 2 COPD patients, a significant increase in total ROS and mtROS was observed without changes in ΔΨm, SOD2 or ETC complex protein expression. However, quadriceps muscle of GOLD Grade 3/4 COPD patients showed an increased mtROS and decreased SOD2 and ETC complex proteins I, II, III and V expression. Conclusions Mitochondrial dysfunction in the airways, but not in quadriceps muscle, is associated with airflow obstruction and exercise capacity in Grade 2 COPD. Oxidative stress-induced mitochondrial dysfunction in the quadriceps may result from similar disease processes occurring in the lungs.

The development and dissemination of culturally relevant health care information has traditionally taken a "top-down" approach. Governmental funding agencies and research institutions have too often dictated the importance and focus of health-related research and information dissemination. In addition, the digital divide has affected rural communities in such a way that their members often do not possess the knowledge or experience necessary to use technological resources. And, even when they do, their skills may be limited, adequate only for implementing applications and programs designed by others who live and work outside of these communities. This need became the driving force in the creation of the Native Telehealth Outreach and Technical Assistance Program. The goal of the program is to equip Native community members, at both the lay and professional levels, with the means to use technology to address tribal health care needs. The transfer of relevant technical knowledge and skills enables participants to develop projects which enhance the community-wide dissemination of health care information. Nine community health advocates and professionals participated in the initial cohort. Eight of the participants successfully developed multimedia-based projects including Web sites, interactive CD-ROMs, and video focusing on a variety of health concerns. At the conclusion of the 18-month program period, projects were disseminated throughout rural communities. The NTOTAP staff continues to evaluate the use of these projects and their benefits within the rural communities. (Contains 2 tables and 1 figure.)

• 88 children without FH were followed-up for 20 years. • Lp(a) and cIMT were measured at baseline and after 10- and 20 years. • At baseline, Lp(a) was elevated in 11.1% of the children. • Lp(a) did not contribute significantly to arterial wall thickening (measured by cIMT). Elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is independently associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). In a recent long-term follow-up study involving children with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), Lp(a) levels contributed significantly to early atherosclerosis, as measured by carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT). To determine if this holds true for children without FH, we conducted a 20-year follow-up study, examining 88 unaffected siblings (mean age: 12.9 years) of children with FH. No significant association was found between Lp(a) and cIMT during follow-up (ß-adjusted [95% confidence interval] = 0.0001 [-0.008 to 0.008] mm per 50 nmol/L increase Lp(a), p = 0.97). In conclusion, our findings suggest that elevated levels of Lp(a) do not play a significant role in arterial wall thickening among children without FH during the 20-year follow-up period. This leads us to consider the possibility that cIMT may not be a suitable marker for detecting potential subtle changes in the arterial wall mediated by Lp(a) in the young, general population. However, it could also be that elevated Lp(a) is only a significant risk factor for atherosclerosis in the presence of other risk factors such as FH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) allows for non-invasive assessment of arterial stiffness by means of measuring pulse wave velocity (PWV). PWV can be calculated from the time shift between two time-resolved flow curves acquired at two locations within an arterial segment. These flow curves can be derived from two-dimensional CINE phase contrast CMR (2D CINE PC CMR). While CMR-derived PWV measurements have proven to be accurate for the aorta, this is more challenging for smaller arteries such as the carotids due to the need for both high spatial and temporal resolution. In this work, we present a novel method that combines retrospectively gated 2D CINE PC CMR, high temporal binning of data and compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction to accomplish a temporal resolution of 4 ms. This enables accurate flow measurements and assessment of PWV in regional carotid artery segments. Methods Retrospectively gated 2D CINE PC CMR data acquired in the carotid artery was binned into cardiac frames of 4 ms length, resulting in an incoherently undersampled ky-t-space with a mean undersampling factor of 5. The images were reconstructed by a non-linear CS reconstruction using total variation over time as a sparsifying transform. PWV values were calculated from flow curves by using foot-to-foot and cross-correlation methods. Our method was validated against ultrasound measurements in a flow phantom setup representing the carotid artery. Additionally, PWV values of two groups of 23 young (30 ± 3 years, 12 [52%] women) and 10 elderly (62 ± 10 years, 5 [50%] women) healthy subjects were compared using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. Results Our proposed method produced very similar flow curves as those measured using ultrasound at 1 ms temporal resolution. Reliable PWV estimation proved possible for transit times down to 7.5 ms.
