Abstract

We report observations of the G0 subgiant eta Boo made in 1998, in Balmer-line equivalent width with the 2.5-m Nordic Optical Telescope and in velocity with the 24-inch Lick CAT. 52. High-Redshift Superwinds as the Source of the Strongest Mg II Absorbers: A Feasibility Analysis

Abstract

We present HIRES/Keck profiles of four extremely strong (W_r > 1.8 A) Mg II absorbers at 1 < z < 2. The profiles display a common kinematic structure, having a sharp drop in optical depth near the center of the profile and strong, black-bottomed absorption on either side. This ``symmetric-inverted'' structure, with a velocity spread of several hundred kilometers per second, is suggestive of superwinds arising in actively star-forming galaxies. Low-ionization absorption of similar strength has been observed in local star-forming galaxies. The Mg II absorbers with W_r > 1.8 A evolve away from z = 2 to the present. We propose that a substantial fraction of these very strong absorbers are due to superwinds and that their evolution is related to the redshift evolution of star-forming galaxies. Based on the observed redshift number density of W_r > 1.8 A Mg II absorbers at 1 < z < 2, we explore whether it is realistic that superwinds from starbursting galaxies could give rise to these absorbers. Finally, we do an analysis of the superwind connection to damped Lya absorbers (DLAs). Abstract

We report results from a large Hubble Space Telescope project to observe a significant (~34,000) ensemble of main sequence stars in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae with a goal of defining the frequency of inner-orbit, gas-giant planets. Simulations based on the characteristics of the 8.3 days of time-series data in the F555W and F814W WFPC2 filters show that ~17 planets should be detected by photometric transit signals if the frequency of hot Jupiters found in the solar neighborhood is assumed to hold for 47 Tuc. The experiment provided high-quality data sufficient to detect planets. A full analysis of these WFPC2 data reveals ~75 variables, but NO light curves resulted for which a convincing interpretation as a planet could be made. The planet frequency in 47 Tuc is at least an order of magnitude below that for the solar neighborhood. The cause of the absence of close-in planets in 47 Tuc is not yet known; presumably the low metallicity and/or crowding of 47 Tuc interfered with planet formation, with orbital evolution to close-in positions, or with planet survival., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

54. Dynamical Mass Estimates for the Halo of M31 from Keck Spectroscopy

Abstract

The last few months have seen the measurements of the radial velocities of all of the dwarf spheroidal companions to the Andromeda galaxy (M31) using the spectrographs (HIRES and LRIS) on the Keck Telescope. This paper summarises the data on the radial velocities and distances for all the companion galaxies and presents new dynamical modelling to estimate the mass of extended halo of M31. The best fit values for the total mass of M31 are between 7 and 10 x 10^{11} solar masses, depending on the details of the modelling. The mass estimate is accompanied by considerable uncertainty caused by the smallness of the dataset; for example, the upper bound on the total mass is roughly 24 x 10^{11} solar masses, while the lower bound is about 3 x 10^{11} solar masses. These values are less than the most recent estimates of the most likely mass of the Milky Way halo. Bearing in mind all the uncertainties, a fair conclusion is that the M31 halo is roughly as massive as that of the Milky Way halo. Precision Doppler measurements from the Keck/HIRES spectrometer reveal periodic Keplerian velocity variations in the stars HD 16141 and HD 46375. HD 16141 (G5 IV) has a period of 75.8 d and a velocity amplitude of 11 m/s, yielding a companion having Msini = 0.22 Mjup and a semimajor axis, a = 0.35 AU. HD 46375 (K1 IV/V) has a period of 3.024 d and a velocity amplitude of 35 m/s, yielding a companion with Msini=0.25 Mjup, a semimajor axis of a = 0.041 AU, and an eccentricity of 0.04 (consistent with zero). 58. Planetary Companions Around Two Solar Type Stars: HD 195019 and HD 217107

Abstract

We have enlarged the sample of stars in the planet search at Lick Observatory. Doppler measurements of 82 new stars observed at Lick Observatory, with additional velocities from Keck Observatory, have revealed two new planet candidates. The G3V/IV star, HD 195019, exhibits Keplerian velocity variations with a period of 18.27 d, an orbital eccentricity of 0.03 +/- 0.03, and M sin i = 3.51 M_Jup. Based on a measurement of Ca II H&K emission, this star is chromospherically inactive. We estimate the metallicity of HD 195019 to be approximately solar from ubvy photometry. The second planet candidate was detected around HD 217107, a G7V star. This star exhibits a 7.12 d Keplerian period with eccentricity 0.14 +/- 0.05 and M sin i = 1.27 M_Jup. HD 217107 is also chromospherically inactive. The photometric metallicity is found to be [Fe/H] = +0.29 +/- 0.1 dex. Given the relatively short orbital period, the absence of tidal spin-up of HD 217107 provides a theoretical constraint on the upper limit of the companion mass of < 11 M_Jup., Comment: 15 pages, plus 6 figures. Abstract

Doppler measurements of the M4 dwarf star, Gliese 876, taken at both Lick and Keck Observatory reveal periodic, Keplerian velocity variations with a period of 61 days. The orbital fit implies that the companion has a mass of, M = 2.1 MJUP /sin i, an orbital eccentricity of, e = 0.27+-0.03, and a semimajor axis of, a = 0.21 AU. The planet is the first found around an M dwarf, and was drawn from a survey of 24 such stars at Lick Observatory. It is the closest extrasolar planet yet found, providing opportunities for follow--up detection. The presence of a giant planet on a non-circular orbit, 0.2 AU from a 1/3 M_Sun star, presents a challenge to planet formation theory. 71. Surgical navigation for guidewire placement from intraoperative fluoroscopy in orthopaedic surgery.

Abstract

Objective. Surgical guidewires are commonly used in placing fixation implants to stabilize fractures. Accurate positioning of these instruments is challenged by difficulties in 3D reckoning from 2D fluoroscopy. This work aims to enhance the accuracy and reduce exposure times by providing 3D navigation for guidewire placement from as little as two fluoroscopic images. Approach. Our approach combines machine learning-based segmentation with the geometric model of the imager to determine the 3D poses of guidewires. Instrument tips are encoded as individual keypoints, and the segmentation masks are processed to estimate the trajectory. Correspondence between detections in multiple views is established using the pre-calibrated system geometry, and the corresponding features are backprojected to obtain the 3D pose. Guidewire 3D directions were computed using both an analytical and an optimization-based method. The complete approach was evaluated in cadaveric specimens with respect to potential confounding effects from the imaging geometry and radiographic scene clutter due to other instruments. Main results. The detection network identified the guidewire tips within 2.2 mm and guidewire directions within 1.1°, in 2D detector coordinates. Feature correspondence rejected false detections, particularly in images with other instruments, to achieve 83% precision and 90% recall. Estimating the 3D direction via numerical optimization showed added robustness to guidewires aligned with the gantry rotation plane. Guidewire tips and directions were localized in 3D world coordinates with a median accuracy of 1.8 mm and 2.7°, respectively. Significance. The paper reports a new method for automatic 2D detection and 3D localization of guidewires from pairs of fluoroscopic images. Localized guidewires can be virtually overlaid on the patient's pre-operative 3D scan during the intervention. Accurate pose determination for multiple guidewires from two images offers to reduce radiation dose by minimizing the need for repeated imaging and provides quantitative feedback prior to implant placement. 72. An investigation of pathways for rebuilding Australia's sheep flock.

Abstract

Context: A significant opportunity remains to further increase the supply of premium sheepmeat products to Australia's customers, which requires a more rapid rebuilding of the national sheep flock. To help meet this challenge, developing relevant information for sheep producers to assist them to achieve a profitable flock-rebuilding outcome is viewed as highly desirable. Aims: (1) Develop flock-rebuild scenarios that track inventory, cashflow, profit and loss, and the overall balance sheet over a 5-year projection. (2) Model the impact on flock-rebuilding pathways of exposure to variation in supplementary-feed costs, purchase of stock and price received for sale animals and flock structure. (3) Model variation in benefits and costs for a range of production zones, enterprise types and flock-age profiles. Methods: Fourteen flock-rebuilding pathways were assessed for up to nine flock types, using a spreadsheet model that tracked inventory, cashflow, profit and loss, and the overall balance sheet over 5 years. Key results: The top four pathways for profitability and capacity to rapidly rebuild flock numbers include retention of more older ewes, purchasing young ewes, purchasing older ewes (mostly 5–6-year olds) in Merino and Merino-cross flock types only and joining ewe lambs in Maternal and Cleanskin flock types only. These pathways were not sensitive to variation in the cost of supplementary feed, stock prices or flock structure, although joining Merino ewe lambs became one of the top four pathways when feed costs were lower. Conclusions and implications: The well established practices of retaining ewes for longer and purchasing ewes, especially young ewes, have the most potential to both rapidly and profitably rebuild flock numbers. However, joining ewe lambs, particularly in Maternal and Cleanskin flocks, can also profitably contribute to rapid flock rebuilding. While reducing reproductive wastage or increasing reproductive potential were mostly profitable, they could not rapidly rebuild flock numbers. In contrast, accelerated lambing systems can rapidly rebuild flock numbers, but are only marginally profitable. The outlook for Australia's sheepmeat industry is very positive, with a significant opportunity available to further increase the supply of premium sheepmeat products to customers, by more rapidly rebuilding the national flock. This paper presents the findings of a study focussed on providing the confidence and material to sheep producers to choose optimal pathways to rebuild their flocks. At least 6 of the 14 alternatives investigated were deemed suitable for commercial use and not sensitive to variations in supplementary-feed costs, stock-purchasing and -sale prices. Abstract

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to quantify body weight changes in German adult populations during the past decades. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Longitudinal analysis of seven cohort studies covering different age ranges between 18 and 83 years. Baseline examinations were between 1994 and 2007 and follow-up durations between 4.0 and 11.9 years. For each study, mean change in body weight per year and 10-year change in body mass index (BMI) classification were analyzed. For the middle age group of 45-64 years, meta-analysis was conducted to obtain an overall estimate for Germany. RESULTS: Among men weight gain was highest in the youngest participants and decreased with advancing age. Among women weight gain was on a stable high level among those younger than 45 years and decreased at older age. Within 10 years, 30-40% of middle-aged participants with normal baseline weight became pre-obese or obese and 20-25% of those with pre-obesity at baseline became obese, whereas >80% of persons who were obese at baseline remained obese over time. The estimated average weight change in adults aged 45-64 years was 0.25 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.18-0.33) kg/year among men and 0.24 (0.17-0.30) kg/year among women. CONCLUSIONS: We could observe a moderate weight gain over the past years in German middle-aged populations of 0.25 kg/year. Obesity prevention needs to be targeted to specific subgroups in the population, especially to younger adults, who seem to be most vulnerable for gaining weight. Obesity intervention needs to be improved, as the majority of obese adults remained obese over time. Abstract

We examined the association of baseline serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) with change in weight and total body fat in a cohort of community-dwelling older adults from Southern Germany. A total of 735 participants of the population-based KORA-Age Study (2009-2012), aged 65-90 years, were followed for 2.9 [+ or -]0.1 years. Body fat was assessed with bioelectrical impedance analysis. Linear and multinomial logistic models, adjusted for baseline covariables, were used to examine the association of 25(OH)D with percentage weight and body fat change during follow-up. 25(OH)D levels were not associated with overall weight change or body fat loss. Higher 25(OH)D levels were associated with a lower likelihood of having gained > 3% of body fat in women but not in men. Abstract

In this paper, we discuss a variety of ways in which practising motor actions by means of motor imagery (MI) can be enhanced via synchronous action observation (AO), that is, by AO + MI. We review the available research on the (mostly facilitatory) behavioural effects of AO + MI practice in the early stages of skill acquisition, discuss possible theoretical explanations, and consider several issues related to the choice and presentation schedules of suitable models. We then discuss considerations related to AO + MI practice at advanced skill levels, including expertise effects, practical recommendations such as focussing attention on specific aspects of the observed action, using just-ahead models, and possible effects of the perspective in which the observed action is presented. In section “Coordinative AO + MI”, we consider scenarios where the observer imagines performing an action that complements or responds to the observed action, as a promising and yet under-researched application of AO + MI training. In section “The dual action simulation hypothesis of AO + MI”, we review the neurocognitive hypothesis that AO + MI practice involves two parallel action simulations, and we consider opportunities for future research based on recent neuroimaging work on parallel motor representations. In section “AO + MI training in motor rehabilitation”, we review applications of AO, MI, and AO + MI training in the field of neurorehabilitation. Taken together, this evidence-based, exploratory review opens a variety of avenues for future research and applications of AO + MI practice, highlighting several clear advantages over the approaches of purely AO- or MI-based practice. © 2022, The Author(s).

Abstract

Background: Risdiplam is an oral small molecule approved for the treatment of patients with spinal muscular atrophy, with approval for use in patients with type 2 and type 3 spinal muscular atrophy granted on the basis of unpublished data. The drug modifies pre-mRNA splicing of the SMN2 gene to increase production of functional SMN. We aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of risdiplam in patients with type 2 or non-ambulant type 3 spinal muscular atrophy. Methods: In this phase 3, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, patients aged 2–25 years with confirmed 5q autosomal recessive type 2 or type 3 spinal muscular atrophy were recruited from 42 hospitals in 14 countries across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. Participants were eligible if they were non-ambulant, could sit independently, and had a score of at least 2 in entry item A of the Revised Upper Limb Module. Patients were stratified by age and randomly assigned (2:1) to receive either daily oral risdiplam, at a dose of 5·00 mg (for individuals weighing ≥20 kg) or 0·25 mg/kg (for individuals weighing <20 kg), or daily oral placebo (matched to risdiplam in colour and taste). Randomisation was conducted by permutated block randomisation with a computerised system run by an external party. Patients, investigators, and all individuals in direct contact with patients were masked to treatment assignment. The primary endpoint was the change from baseline in the 32-item Motor Function Measure total score at month 12. All individuals who were randomly assigned to risdiplam or placebo, and who did not meet the prespecified missing item criteria for exclusion, were included in the primary efficacy analysis. Individuals who received at least one dose of risdiplam or placebo were included in the safety analysis. SUNFISH is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02908685. Abstract

Recognition memory and hemispheric specialization were assessed for abstract colour/black and white pictures of sport situations in painters and visually naive subjects using a forced choice yes/no tachistoscopic procedure. Reaction times showed a significant three-way interaction of picture type, expertise, and visual field, indicating that painters processed the abstract pictures in the right hemisphere and sport pictures leftwards relative to the novices. The novices showed an overall LVF/RH advantage, strongest for sport pictures. The opposing gradients in the painters indicate a preferential change of processing strategy by which descriptive systems appear to have developed for figurative, but not abstract pictures.
