New Zealand's Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, recently visited India, signaling a new phase in the relationship between the two countries. New Zealand has been working to establish a core trade, economic, and political partnership with India since the 1990s. However, their primary objective of increasing goods exports to India has not been met, and total trade between the two countries has declined. The stalled free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations and the asymmetry in the relationship have emerged as obstacles. Despite this, there are opportunities for New Zealand to enhance its relationship with India through defense and maritime cooperation, as well as collaboration in the South Pacific. The visit by Peters indicates a shift in New Zealand's approach to India, with a greater emphasis on other aspects of the relationship beyond trade. [Extracted from the article]
