Differential diagnosis – This species is a representative of the elongatus species group characterized by terminal setae f1 and h1 long, and subequal to f2 and h 2 in females. Syringophilopsis blaszaki differs from all congeners of elongatus group occurring in Palaearctic by the following combination of characters: genital setae long, subequal to aggenital setae ag2 or no more than twice shorter than ag2; hysteronotal shields present; fan-like setae p' and p" of legs III and IV with 12–14 tines; length of setae ag2 and g2 290–300 and 295–305, respectively; pygidial shield distinctly punctate. Syringophilopsis hirundus Skoracki, 2004 Hosts and distribution – Swallow – Hirundo rustica (type host) (Hirundinidae): England, Kazakhstan, Poland, Ukraine (first record) (Skoracki 2004b, 2011; Glowska et al. 2015). Syringophilopsis fringillae (Fritsch, 1958) Hosts and distribution – Chaffinch – Fringilla coelebs (type host) (Fringillidae): Germany, England, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine (first record) (Skoracki 2011; Klimovičová and Hromada 2014; Glowska et al. 2015). Three new species of the family Syringophilidae associated with birds of the pantropically distributed order Coraciiformes are described: two new species of the subfamily Picobiinae—Rafapicobia momoti sp. nov. ex the Rufous-capped Motmot Baryphthengus ruficapillus (Vieillot) (Momotidae) from Brazil, Rafapicobia brachypteraci sp. nov. ex the Rufous-headed Ground-Roller Atelornis crossleyi Sharpe (Brachypteraciidae) from Madagascar, and one new species of the subfamily Syringophilinae—Peristerophila coraciidus sp. nov. ex the Dollarbird Eurystomus orientalis (Linnaeus) (Coraciidae) from Papua New Guinea. Additionally, the Collared Kingfisher, Todiramphus chloris (Boddaert) (Alcedinidae), is recorded as a new host for Peristerophila meropis Skoracki et al., 2017. In all these host families, syringophilids are recorded for the first time. Moreover, our findings represent the first records of picobiines from coraciiform birds. Currently, the fauna of quill mites associated with coraciiforms includes six species grouped in the three genera: Rafapicobia Skoracki, 2011, Peristerophila Kethley, 1970, and Syringophilopsis Kethley, 1970. All these genera seem to be typically telluravian and have been also recorded from passeriform birds.

A new monotypic genus of parasitic mites is proposed for Ixobrychiphilus wallacei n. gen., n. sp. (Acariformes: Prostigmata: Syringophilidae) collected from Ixobrychus cinnamomeus (Gmelin) (Pelecaniformes: Ardeidae) from China. This new genus is morphologically similar to Niglarobia Kethley, 1970 but differs by the presence of a full complement of leg setae (vs. setae vsII absent in Niglarobia), propodonotal setae arranged 2-1-1-1-1 (vs. 2-1-1-2), and legs I thicker than II (vs. legs I and II equal in thickness).

Neoaulonastus sidorchukae sp. nov. (Figure 1 A���D) Description. Female, holotype. Total body length 530 (490���520 in 3 paratypes). Gnathosoma. Infracapitulum apunctate. Each medial branch of peritremes with 2 chambers, each lateral branch with 5���6 chambers. Stylophore apunctate, 125 long (125). Movable cheliceral digits 90 (90) long. Idiosoma. Propodonotal shield apunctate, weakly sclerotized, with concave anterior margin and constricted posteriorly, bearing bases of setae ve and si; bases of setae c1 situated on or caudal to posterior margin of propodonotal shield. Setae ve and si subequal in length. All idiosomal setae smooth. Bases of setae se situated anterior to level of setae c1. Setae c1 1.6���2.3 times longer than c2. Hysteronotal shield fused with pygidial shield, apunctate, very weakly sclerotized, with visible longitudinal striation, anterior margin at level of setal bases d1. Setae d2 slightly longer (1.2���1.3 times) than e2. Setae h2 3 times longer than f2, setae h1 and f1 subequal in length. Genital setae g1 and g2 2���2.5 times longer than pseudanal setae ps1 and ps2. Genital plate absent. All coxal fields apunctate. Legs. Fan-like setae p��� and p��� of legs III and IV with 6 tines. Male. Not found. Type material. Female holotype and three female paratypes from the under-tail covert quill of the purplerumped sunbird Leptocoma zeylonica (Linnaeus) (host no. ZSM 11.1161/V188-9, male); SRI LANKA: Kahatagasdigiliya, 7 March 1911, coll. C.B. Haniel. Mites removed by M. Skoracki and M. Zmudzinski in 2017. Type material depository. All type specimens are deposited in the AMU, except 1 female paratype in the ZSM. Differential diagnosis. The new species, Neoaulonastus sidorchukae sp. nov., is morphologically most similar to Neoaulonastus cinnyris Klimovicova, Smolak, Njoroge & Hromada, 2014 described from Cinnyris mediocris Shelley (Nectariniidae) in Tanzania (Klimovicova et al. 2014). In females of both species, the infracapitulum and the stylophore are apunctate; the movable cheliceral digits are about 90 long; the propodonotal shield is with concave anterior margin, weakly sclerotized, and apunctate; setae vi and si are subequal in length; bases of setae se are situated anterior to the level of setal bases c1; the hysteronotal shield is fused to the pygidial shield; setae h1 and f1 are subequal in length; genital setae are about twice as long as pseudanal setae; all coxal fields are apunctate; and fan-like setae p��� and p��� of legs III and IV have six tines. The new species differs from N. cinnyris by following features: in females of N. sidorchukae, each medial branch of peritremes has two chambers; setae c2 and d2 are 90���130 and 140���160 long, respectively; and the genital plate is absent. In females of N. cinnyris, each medial branch of peritremes has three chambers; setae c2 and d2 are 155���190 and 90���115 long, respectively; and the genital plate is present. Etymology. This species is named in honor of the prominent Russian acarologist and paleontologist Dr. Ekaterina (Katya) Sidorchuk (Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow), who died in a tragic accident. Lawrencipicobia calyptorhyncha sp. nov. (Figs. 3���5) Description. FEMALE (holotype, range for 4 paratypes) (Figs. 3 A���B and 4A���F). Total body length 764 (721���771 in 4 paratypes). Gnathosoma. Infracapitulum apunctate. Stylophore apunctate, 221 (229���232) long. Each medial branch of peritremes with 4���5 chambers, each lateral branch with 8���10 chambers. Idiosoma. All dorsal setae, except for f1 and f2, thick and distinctly knobbed. Propodonotal shield entire and well sclerotized. Setae ve situated postero-lateral to vi. Length ratio of setae vi: ve: si 1:1.1���1.5:1.9���2.6. Bases of setae c1 and se situated at same transverse level. Hysteronotal shield reduced to two small sclerites surrounding bases of setae d1. Setae d2 and e2 subequal in length, both pairs slightly longer (1.1���1.2 times) than d1. Length ratio of setae ag1: ag2: ag3 4.2���5.1:1:3.7���5.0. Agenital and genital plates absent. Genital setae g1 short but setiform, pseudanal setae ps1 as microsetae. All coxal fields apunctate; setae situated on coxal fields III and IV thick and distinctly knobbed. Legs. Quill mites (Acariformes: Prostigmata: Syringophilidae) are a family of about 400 ectoparasite species known to infest birds for over 140 yr. All previously identified quill mites occur in the calamus, a cavity of the bird feather, where they spent their entire life except for a short dispersion period. In this study, we report the first record of quill mites dwelling in the quill walls during their entire life cycle. In short, we found all of the different life stages of the species Lawrencipicobia poicephali (Skoracki & Dabert 2002) (Acariformes: Syringophilidae) in the quill wall in 33 host individuals of six different host species from many different locations in Sub-Saharan Africa. Hosts were collected over a time period spanning more than 70 yr. Lastly, we report six new avian hosts for this ectoparasite species.

A new species of parasitic quill mite, Syringophiloidus bucerotidus Skoracki et Sikora sp. nov. is described based on the mite material collected from contour feather quills of six hornbill species (Bucerotiformes: Bucerotidae): Horizocerus hartlaubi (Gould) [type host] and H. albocristatus (Cassin) from D.R. Congo, Tockus flavirostris (Ruppell) and T. fasciatus (Shaw) from Cameroon, T. deckeni (Cabanis) and Lophoceros pallidirostris (Hartlaub et Finsch) from Tanzania. Two new species of quill mites of the subfamily Syringophilinae Lavoipierre (Acari: Prostigmata: Syringophilidae) are described from the Bushshrikes (Passeriformes: Malaconotidae) in the Afrotropical region: Neoaulonastus malaconotus n. sp. parasitizing Telophorus nigrifrons (Reichenow) (Malaconotidae) [type host] in Liberia and Kenya, Laniarius aethiopicus (Gmelin) in Somalia, Nilaus afer (Latham) in Kenya, and Syringophiloidus nkaii n. sp. from Nilaus afer in Kenya.

A new species, Chenophila nanseni sp. n., collected from covert quills of the barnacle goose Branta leucopsis (Anseriformes: Anatidae) in Svalbard (Spitsbergen) is described and female polymorphism is recorded in this species. In syringophilids this phenomenon was known only for representatives of the genus Stibarokris. The new species differs from the similar Ch. platyrhynchos by following features: in females of Ch. nanseni the anterior margin of the propodonotal shield is flat (vs. concave in Ch. platyrhynchos) and the lengths of idiosomal setae si, f2 and ag3 in Ch. nanseni are distinctly shorter than in Ch. plathyrynchos.

A new species,Peristerophila falcophilaSkoracki and Hromada sp. nov. is described from three avian hosts of the genusFalco:F. peregrinusTunstall, 1771 from Kenya, Germany and Nepal,F. cherrugGray, 1834 from Romania, andF. sparveriusLinnaeus, 1758 from Colombia. This new species differs from closely relatedPeristerophila accipitridicusSkorackiet al. 2010 as follow: the propodonotal shield is reduced in the posterior part, but not divided into three separate shield (vs. divided into three punctate and saber-like sclerites inP. accipitridicus); the length ratio of setaeve:siis 1:1.6–1.8 (vs. 1:2–2.8); fan-like setaep’andp”of legs III and IV are with 10 tines (vs. 19–20); and the length of setaee2is 145–155 (vs. 185–215). (Acariformes: Syringophilidae) is described from the maguari stork Ciconia maguari (Gmelin) (Ciconiiformes: Ciconiidae) from Uruguay. “S-form” females of S. annae differ from S. phoeniconaias Skoracki & OConnor, 2010 by the hysteronotal shield not reaching setal bases d1 (vs hysteronotal shield bearing setal bases d2 and d1 in S. phoeniconaias), the length ratio of setae ag1:ag2:ag3 1:1–1.4:2–2.4 (vs 1:1:1.2–1.3), the genital setae g1 2–2.5 times as long as g2 (vs g1 1.4–1.8× as long as g2), the fan-like setae of legs III–IV with 15–17 tines (vs with 6–8 tines) and the length of setae f2 (230–255 vs 295–370 µm), h1 (25–30 vs 45–55 µm), ag1 (125–165 vs 245–285 µm) and ag2 (145–180 vs 245–270 µm). “C-form” females of S. annae are distinguishable from S. phoeniconaias (“C-form”) by the longitudinal branch of the peritremes with 14–16 chambers (vs 12–13 chambers in S. phoeniconaias), the propodonotal shield weakly sclerotised and punctate along its lateral borders (vs well sclerotised and apunctate), the hysteronotal shield represented by an oval area covered by delicate striations (vs distinct hysteronotal shield), genital setae g1 1.5–1.8 times as long as g2 (vs g1 and g2 subequal in length), the fan-like setae p’ and p” with 10 tines (vs with 5 tines) and the length of setae ve (120–130 vs 185–195 µm), si (120–130 vs 220 µm), se (180–200 vs 245–295 µm), c1 (180–195 vs 270–285 µm), d2 (180–205 vs 265–270 µm), d1 (195–205 vs 255–285 µm) and e2 (195–215 vs 285–320 µm).

Syringophiloidus sporophila sp. nov. (Figs. 4 D���F and 5) Description. Female, holotype. Total body length 680 (615���700 in 8 paratypes). Gnathosoma. Infracapitulum densely punctate. Stylophore apunctate, 160 (160���165) long. Each medial branch of peritremes with 3 bead-like chambers, each lateral branch with 8 chambers (Fig. 4 D). Idiosoma. Propodonotal shield well sclerotized, densely punctate, anterior margin rounded, setae vi, ve, si, se, and c1 situated on this shield. All propodonotal setae thick, enlarged basally, distinctly serrate (Fig. 4 F). Length ratio of setae vi: ve: si 1:1.2���1.6:4.3���4.6. Bases of setae c1 and se situated at same transverse level. Hysteronotal shield fused to pygidial shield, weakly sclerotized in medial part, densely punctate in anterior and posterior parts. Setae d1, d2, and e2 subequal in length. Setae f1 and h1 subequal in length. Setae ps2 1.3 times longer than ps1. Genital setae g1 and g2 equal in length. Genital plate present. Length ratio of setae ag1: ag2: ag3 1.2:1:1.4. All coxal fields densely punctate. Legs. Fan-like setae p' and p" of legs III and IV with 5���7 tines (Fig. 4 E). Setae tc" of legs III and IV 1.4���1.5 times longer than tc'III���IV. Setae l'RIII 1.6���1.7 times longer than l'RIV. Setae 3c 2.4���2.7 times longer than 3b. MALE. Unknown. Type material. Female holotype and 8 female paratypes from Sporophila torqueola (Bonaparte) (Passeriformes: Thraupidae), MEXICO: Veracruz, Los Tuxtlas, 6 May 2008, coll. S.V. Mironov (SVM 08-0506-1/ 4). Types deposition. Holotype is deposited in the UNAM, paratypes in AMU, UNAM and ZISP. Differential diagnosis. This new species belongs to the minor species-group and is morphologically similar to S. serini Bochkov, Fain and Skoracki, 2004, described from Serinus mozambicus (St. Muller) from Central Africa (Bochkov et al. 2004). In females of both species, the propodonotal and the hysteronotal shields are covered with minute punctuations; dorsal idiosomal setae are thick, enlarged basally and distinctly serrate; setae si are more than 2.5 times longer than vi; and the hysteronotal shield is fused to the pygidial shield. Both species can be easily distinguished by the number of chambers in each branch of the peritremes: in females of S. sporophila, each medial branch has 4 chambers and each lateral branch has 7 chambers (vs. 8 and 10���11, respectively in S. serini). Aulonastus similis Broda, Dabert and Glowska, 2016 This species was recently recorded from two passerine species, Myiozetetes similis (Spix) (Tyrannidae) [type host] and Habia fuscicauda (Cabanis) (Cardinalidae), both from Mexico (Broda et al. 2016). In the present study, a new host record for this mite species is provided. Material examined. Calamincola lobatus Casto, 1978 This species was described from Crotophaga sulcirostris from USA (Texas) (Casto 1977, 1978). Then, Hromada et al. (2016) found it on the same host species from Mexico (Jalisco) and Colombia. Herein, I provide another record of this species from a new locality in Mexico (Veracruz). Material examined.
