From available data from four sampling stations at Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta coastal lagoon (Colombian Caribbean), contemporary and time-lagged cross-correlations between biweekly series of "biological" variables (chrolophyll a, primary productivity) and "physical-chemical" variables (salinity, transparency, inorganic nutrientes, total nitrogen and phosphorous, phaeopigments, seston proteins) were explored. In contrast with the original analyses, turning series stationary (constant mean and variance) eliminated variations in trend and magnitude associated with climate, and emphasized variation at the scale of weeks. As a result, changes in primary production were not related either with contemporary changes in phytoplankton biomass (measured as chlorophyll a) or with previous or contemporary changes in physical chemical variables. This apparent lack of effect of the inorganic nutrients regime on the primary production may occur because nutrient availability is the dinamyc result of uptake and recycling. Only, increases in total nitrogen were associated with rises in primary production 4 weeks later, possibly from lagged used of reserves by phytoplankton. Variations in phytoplankton biomass were positively correlated with contemporary changes in dissolved phosphorous, and negatively with changes in transparency. The first relation could be caused by phosphorous liberation from the benthos in nocturnal anoxic conditions during massive blooms. The second may occur because the main agent conditioning water transparency is phytoplankton. In contrast, increases in primary production were followed by decreases in dissolved nitrogen and phosphorous two weeks later, again possibly in relation to phytoplankton generation times and the dynamics of uptake and recycling.

The Caribbean encrusting and excavating sponges Cliona aprica, C. caribbaea, C. delitrix and C. tenuis (Porifera, Hadromerida, Clionaidae), aggresively undermine and displace live coral tissue. At San Andrés island and Islas del Rosario (Colombian Caribbean), in all 145 observed cases of direct contact of the sponges C. aprica, C. caribbaea and C. tenuis with 17 coral species, corals showed unhealthy signs in their tissue. It was also noticed that the surface of these sponges is colonized by few organisms and that they are rarely preyed upon. To establish the possible use of chemical substances by these sponges in competition for space with corals (allelopathy), as inhibitors of larval settlement (antifouling), and as feeding deterrents against generalist fish (antipredatory), the activity of crude organic extracts was experimentally evaluated. Extracts were prepared in methanol and 1:2 metanol:dichloromethane and incorporated in experimental media at the natural concentration within the sponges. Using an unpublished method being developed by J. Pawlik (University of North Caroline at Wilmington) and M. Ilan (Tel Aviv University), PhytagelTM disks with crude extracts of each of the four sponge species, placed on the coral Montastrea cavernosa, produced a greater degree of polyp mortality than control gels without extract. Gels with extracts of the sponges C. aprica and C. caribbaea + C. tenuis, served in Petri dishes and used as substratum in the field, inhibited significantly the settlement of fouling organisms, in comparison to control gels. In laboratory trials, wheat flour pellets with extracts C. delitrix and C. caribbaea + C. tenuis were significantly rejected by the omnivore reef damselfish, Stegastes partitus, whereas pellets with extract of C. aprica did not deter feeding. These results suggest that substances present in the crude organic extracts of these sponges may be responsible in part for their ability to compete for reef substrata and to defend themselves from potential aggressors.

Variation in the taxonomlc and trophic structure of the zooplankton community, associated to fertilizations alternating between continental runoff and coastal upwelhng. were studied in the nenttc province of the Santa Maria area. Colombian Caribbean Sea. Sampling was carried out In November 1991 during the major rainy season, and in April 1992 during the dry season. Organisms were Identified, counted and trophically placed, and the biomass por trophic levo! was dotorminod. Eighty-two spocies-taxa were discriminated, most ot them oceaniccoastal and predominantly omnrvores. Community composition varied temporally and spatially with predominant oceanographic conditions, evidoncmg succossional procossos rotatod to fertilization pulses. During continental runoff conditions, typical of the rainy season, community composition and total biomass and abundance were spatially more heterogeneous, with species more coastal and neritic, large omnivores and detritivores and small carnívoros. Dunng upwellmg conditions, which occur as localizod pulses during the rainy season, and generalize throughout the study area during the dry season, the community was spatially more homogeneous, with spocies more ocoanic and doop-dwolhng and. in its maximum development, with higher biomasses. omnivores and detritivores small, and greater representation and size of macrofiltering herbivores and carnivores.

Ophiuroids are conspicuous dwellers of exposed and cryptic microhabitats available in coral reefs. This investigation pretended to discern ophiuroid community composition at microhabitats available in sponges and other reef components of different character (biotic v s. abiotic) or position over the substrate (elevated v s. non-elevated), at shallow reefs within the Montastraea spp. zone at San Bernardo Archipelago (Colombian Caribbean). Evaluating the abundance of organisms related to availability of different microhabitats, schemes of exclusive or preferential occupation of a particular elevated component were determined. These schemes, are discussed as initial cues that suggest the existence of benefic ecological relations. Samplings were performed at three stations. Four 20 meter transects were surveyed on each station, three during daytime and one during night. Presence and abundance of ophiuroids and microhabitat availability (area or volume) were quantified v i s u a l l y. Eleven types of microhabitats were identified. Vertical microhabitats and specially sponges and octocorals, were the most common substrate components at the study area. The ophiuroid community was composed by 22 morphotypes. Only Ophiopsila sp. 1 (with excavating habits) was restricted to one particular kind of substrate. Many other species did not use restrictedly any particular type of microhabitat, but used exclusively structures of particular characteristics (elevation, character or cripticity). T h e occupation of inferior surfaces of non-elevated components was determined by ophiuroid’s necessity of reaching cryptic conditions, and this necessity was linked to photosensitive species, or those especially vulnerable to predators, and to its consequent seek of protection. Elevated components and particularly 13 sponge species were characteristically occupied by Ophiothrix angulata - O. orstedii complex and by O . s u e n s o n i i. Sponges with different morphologies are discussed to bring differential advantages to dwelling ophiuroid species. It is suggested that a probable benefic ecologic relationship (not obligated) exists between these brittle-star species and some of the most frequently occupied sponge species. Nevertheless this must be appropriately tested by experimental work.

During the exploration of the soft calcareous bottoms of the continental shelf of La Guajira Department, 47 different species of sponges were identified in the classes Demospongiae and Calcarea. From bottom trawling carried out throughout the continental shelf on the bathymetric fringes of 10 and 50 m, it was found that the number of species is larger at 50 m depth, mainly in areas to the north and south where sand and mud sediments prevail. However, the patterns are not consistent in all the cases, owing to the low similarities between stations, based on the presence-absence of sponges, indicating a rather heterogeneous faunal composition. The soft bottoms allow the growth of non-sessile and sessile sponges; collected species show massive, incrusting ramified and spherical growth, all loosely attached but agglutinating large substratum fragments to which they hold.

The marine sponge Discodermia dissoluta is a source of the polyketide discodermolide, a potent antitumoral agent that has reached clinical trials in humans. In Santa Marta, where this species occurs at shallower depths than in other Caribbean areas, for the first time it was possible to study by SCUBA its ecological characteristics, distribution and abundance. By searching the base of the reefs (12-25 m in depth) it was found that this species is restricted to sites or bays with relatively low wave-exposure, dwelling predominantly in hard, horizontal to inclined substrata, generally exposed to light. Censuses carried out in 4 m-radius circles in sectors where this sponge occurs showed moderate densities (about 2-5 ind/50 m2) that, although not very low, do not support its commercial exploitation to obtain discodermolide. By locating individuals in the sampling space and using the point pattern distribution functions F, G and K, it was determined that individuals of D. dissoluta are aggregated in patches at scales from decimeters to a few meters. This pattern possibly arises from short-distance larval dispersal or fragmentation, both common in sponges. Size of censused individuals was estimated as projected area from digital photos, and expressed in volume by a regression calculated from the real volume of 30 collected individuals. The determination of antimitotic activity of organic extracts from marine organisms generates expectations on the isolation of substances with potential anticancer activity. The antimitotic activity of crude organic extracts from 15 marine sponges from the Colombian Caribbean coast were tested in vitro against embryos of the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus. 80% of the species evaluated (Spirastrella coccinea, Myrmekioderma rea, Iotrochota imminuta, Halichondria sp., Petromica ciocalyptoides, Cinachyrella kuekenthali, Biemna cribaria, Oceanapia peltata, Xestospongia proxima, Oceanapia bartschi, Polymastia tenax y Dragmacidon reticulata) showed significant levels of inhibiting activity on the mitotic divisions at the first cellular phase of fertilized eggs. The extracts from Halichondria sp., P. ciocalyptoides and Xestospongia proxima disintegrate the cellular nuclei instantly. Extracts from Cribrochalina infundibulum showed an intermediate level of activity, while extracts from Desmapsamma anchorata and Myrmekioderma gyroderma showed no activity.

En ambientes litorales tropicales, el material organico en suspension favorece la presencia de organismos sesiles filtradores, como las esponjas, sobre los predominantemente fototroficos como las algas y los corales. En el area de Santa Marta, Caribe colombiano, la productividad se incrementa por pulsos alternantes de afloramiento costero y descarga continental, resultando en una importante diversidad y abundancia de esponjas. Las especies del genero Ircinia (I. campana, I. felix e I. strobilina) son conspicuas y abundantes en los biotopos rocoso-coralinos del area. Para establecer la influencia de las condiciones ambientales predominantes sobre la distribucion de las tres especies, sus densidades, tallas, preferencia de microhabitat, forma, color, y presencia de signos de depredacion, epibiontes e interacciones agresivas con los vecinos, se compararon en profundidad (5-20 m) entre dos localidades contrastantes por sus regimenes de turbidez y turbulencia. Al igual que en otras areas del Caribe, el orden de abundancia general fue Ircinia felix>I. strobilina>I. campana, lo cual indica diferencias intrinsecas en sus estrategias e historias de vida. En relacion aparente con la cantidad de materia organica en suspension, fuente principal de alimento de estas especies, se encontro que la densidad y el tamano de los individuos de Ircinia fueron significativamente mayores en la localidad de aguas turbias y relativamente calmadas, en comparacion con la localidad de aguas mas claras y mayor turbulencia; la densidad fue tambien mayor en aguas someras y medias en la localidad de mayor turbidez. En relacion con el efecto que ejercen las fuerzas hidrodinamicas sobre la forma de los organismos sesiles, las formas bajas preponderaron a todas las profundidades en la localidad mas turbulenta, y fueron proporcionalmente mas frecuentes en aguas someras que en aguas profundas en la localidad mas calmada, lo cual quizas se debe a la ocurrencia esporadica de fuertes mares de leva en el area. En estas especies la intensidad del color decrecio con la disminucion de la luz (con la profundidad y comparando microhabitats expuestos y cripticos). La menor penetracion de luz en la localidad con la mayor turbidez tambien implico una ligeramente mayor proporcion de individuos de colores claros en aguas someras. En las dos localidades, estas especies se encuentran preferentemente en posicion expuesta a la luz y sobre sustrato duro, aunque I. strobilina puede encontrarse frecuentemente anclada en cascajo. Los signos de depredacion y la epibiosis fueron raros, en correlacion con las defensas quimicas ya conocidas. Aunque en el muestreo no se detectaron casos claros de competencia por espacio, en el area de estudio estas especies pueden recubrir parcialmente tejido coralino.

The North-West of Urabá Gulf in the Southern Caribbean supports a variety of coral reef zones in conditions of high turbulence and fluctuating turbidity and salinity. Sponge composition and density were surveyed and their relationship with physical and structural features of the reef zones were analyzed. In total, 65 demosponges and 1 calcareous sponge species were encountered along belt transects (20 m2) on 11 stations between 1 and 17 m in depth. Sponge density in Urabá tended to be higher than in other areas with water conditions optimal for coral reef development (i.e. Roncador, Serrana and Quitasueño remote oceanic atolls in the SW Caribbean, Colombia) due possibly to higher concentrations of organic suspended materials discharged from rivers. Nevertheless, this effect was not reflected in the Urabá‘s species richness as just a limited number of species (Niphates erecta, Iotrochota birotulata and Mycale laevis) had high densities. Multivariate analyses showed that sponge community composition varies along a depth gradient and across habitats (coral and geomorphological zones), similar to the patterns observed in other Caribbean areas. However, marked taxonomic differences between shallow (6 m) zones and the great increase of the sponge density below just 6 m, seem to be a unique feature of Urabá. The absence of many species and the low abundance of sponges in shallow zones (< 6 m) may be due, not only to the variables associated to low depth, like turbulence, which is periodically very strong, but also to great fluctuations in surface salinity due to discharges of the Atrato and other local rivers. The shallow and deep stations that had low sponge richness and density, showed the greatest urchin densities (especially Echinometra viridis); therefore, it is possible that these urchins may be playing an additional controlling role on sponge populations.

First steps towards cellular localization of (+)-discodermolide, a potent antitumoral poliketide biosynthesized by the Caribbean marine sponge Discodermia dissoluta. Identification of bioactive metabolite cell producers allow driving cell culture experiments for in vitro production, just as elucidation of the possible physiologic function of metabolites. The Caribbean marine sponge Discodermia Discodermia dissoluta, (+)-Discodermolide, Cell dissociation, Anticancer agent.dissoluta produces the polyketide (+)-discodermolide, a potent antitumoral that has reached clinic trials in humans. In this research, progress was made in identifying the producing cells by cell dissociation, separation into fractions by centrifugation on Percoll® density gradients, and detection of (+)-discodermolide presence by thin layer chromatography. The fractions recovered showed cells of different morphological characteristics, including cyanobacteria, filamentous bacteria, choanocytes, archaeocytes, among others. It was possible to identify an irregular but consistent pattern of (+)-dicordemolide production in the fractions that contained one or more kind of sponge granular cells, indicating that metabolite production seems to be related to the sponge and not with the associated microorganisms., Identificar la célula productora de un metabolito bioactivo permite enfocar los esfuerzos de cultivo celular para su producción in-vitro, así como elucidar la posible función fisiológica del metabolito. La esponja marina del Caribe Discodermia dissoluta produce el policétido (+)-discodermólido, un potente antitumoral que ha llegado a fase clínica de investigación en humanos. En este trabajo se avanzó en la identificación de las células productoras mediante disociación celular, separación en fracciones por centrifugación en gradientes de densidad de Percoll ® y detección de la presencia de (+)-discodermólido mediante cromatografía de capa delgada. Las fracciones mostraron células de diferentes características morfológicas, entre las que se encuentran cianobacterias, bacterias filamentosas, coanocitos, arqueocitos, entre otras. Se pudo identificar un patrón irregular pero consistente de producción de (+)-discodermólido en las fracciones que contenían uno o más tipos de células granulares de la esponja, indicando que la producción del metabolito parece estar asociada con la esponja y no con los microorganismos asociados.

Las superficies sumergidas en el mar son densamente colonizadas por bacterias y sus interacciones, tales como la inhibicion del crecimiento, son importantes para determinar el desarrollo de comunidades bacterianas, como tambien de posteriores etapas de la macroepibiosis. Para determinar el potencial de interaccion entre bacterias de las biopeliculas de esponjas, se realizaron ensayos de actividad de inhibicion in vitro de crecimiento entre cepas bacterianas aisladas de superficies con diferente grado de macroepibiosis, de las esponjas Aplysina insularis (limpia), Aplysina lacunosa (con macroepibiosis) y de la superficie calcarea de la concha del molusco bivalvo Donax sp. El porcentaje total de interaccion antagonica entre estas cepas bacterianas fue del 64 %; las cepas bacterianas aisladas de superficies limpias inhibieron el crecimiento de cepas provenientes de superficies muy colonizadas en proporciones cercanas a 1:1. Cepas de superficies no colonizadas tuvieron mayor frecuencia de interacciones antagonicas. Se propone la interaccion bacteriana antagonica como posible mecanismo de regulacion del crecimiento poblacional y de esta forma del desarrollo de etapas subsecuentes de la macroepibiosis

Sessile organisms can use physical, chemical, and biological mecanisms to control, avoid or induce epibiosis. The antifouling capacity of crude organic extracts from the marine sponges Cribrochalina infundibulum (=C. vasculum) and Biemna cribaria, was evaluated. Natural concentrations of sponges extracts were added to agar based gels and deployed in the field during 28 days, to offer substrate to natural epibiotic community. Colonization extent was then compared with control gels without extracts. Extracts from both sponges significatively inhibited the colonization of most of epifaunal organisms. B. cribaria was found to be more effective than C. infundibulum; moreover its extract lixivation was lower with a longer inhibitory action.

Encrusting and excavating Caribbean sponges Cliona aprica, C. caribbaea and C. tenuis (Hadromerida: Clionaidae) aggressively undermine and displace live coral tissue. To estab- lish modes and rates of lateral advance into neighboring organisms, 171 sponge individuals were studied for 13 mo. Sponge advancement into live coral, via excavation underneath boundary polyps, occurred only when the 2 confronted at an angle of ≥180°. Sponges stopped or retreated when coral upward and inward growth at the boundary closed the angle between the coral and sponge, placing polyps out of reach of excavating tissue. At a straight angle of confrontation, C. tenuis advanced into coral at higher rates than the other 2 sponge species. Its advance was more pronounced into Diploria strigosa than into Siderastrea siderea. Sponge undermining continuously opened space for transient settlement of turf algae and for accumulation of sediments. Corallivory at the sponge-coral boundary did not imply greater rates of sponge advance, but probably did contribute to coral bioerosion. Mas- sive corals escaped sponge undermining by upward growth, their ability to do so depended partly on defensive mechanisms. Foliose and platy corals escaped by overtopping. Rates of sponge advance into substrata incrusted and overgrown by algae were in general lower than into live coral, while sponges lost space to some encrusting invertebrates.

Some sponges of the genus Cliona (Porifera, Hadromerida, Clionidae) simulta- neously excavate and encrust calcareous substratum, competing aggressively for illuminated space with corals and other organisms. To interpret current trends of reef space occupation, the patterns of distribution and size of three Caribbean species were examined at San Andres Island and Islas del Rosario in Colombia. While Cliona aprica was ubiquitous, C. caribbaea (¼ C. langae) preferred deep and protected reef zones, and C. tenuis shallow and wave-exposed settings. In contrast to the effect on other excavating sponges, chronic exposure to raw sew- age did not significantly increase the abundance of the studied sponges. Substra- tum occupation/availability ratios showed a positive tendency of the sponges toward certain coral skeletons, and a negative or neutral tendency toward calcar- eous rock, indicating that establishment may be easier on clean, recently dead coral than on older, heavily incrusted substratum. High relief generally limits sponge size to that of the illuminated portions of the substratum. A generally lower proportion of small individuals than of larger ones indicates currently low recruitment rates and low subsequent mortality. Successful events of higher recruitment seem to have occurred for C. tenuis. These are related to the massive acroporid coral die-off in the early 1980s and to asexual dispersion during storms, resulting in a current 10% substratum cover. Reefs with high coral mor- tality were and/or are thus more susceptible to colonization and subsequent space occupation by these sponges, although relief may prevent space monopolization.

The broken, dead stands of the Caribbean elkhorn coral Acropora palmata, which suf- fered massive mortalities from disease and bleaching during the early 1980s, are now widely covered by Cliona tenuis, an encrusting and excavating brown sponge (Hadromerida, Clionaidae). This sponge displaces live coral tissue by undermining the polypal skeletal support. On the windward fringing reef of Islas del Rosario (Colombian Caribbean), 26% of C. tenuis individuals currently dwelling on live corals had colonized their host from sponge-carrying branches of A. palmata thrown against the corals during storms. Times of initial colonization were traced back from sponge growth rates in a few marked massive coral colonies and found to coincide approximately with hurricanes that had affected the area. Transplantation experiments confirmed that C. tenuis is able to spread to new coral hosts from attached fragments. The extent of C. tenuis dispersion via branching coral frag- ments and further massive coral colonization is now evident and, given that C. tenuis-encrusted A. palmata fragments are becoming progressively smaller, the phenomenon is likely to increase. C. tenuis was also found undermining encrusting and foliose corals settled on dead A. palmata branches, thus also retarding the process of reef recovery to an unknown degree.

Para evaluar el papel del sedimento sobre la alta produccion primaria de una laguna costera tropical, Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta (Caribe, Colombia), se midio el flujo de nitrogeno y fosforo (inorganico disuelto, particulado) en la interfase agua-sedimento. Entre 1996 y 1997 se incubaron nucleos de sedimento en el laboratorio y se ubicaron trampas de particulas en campo, en dos estaciones contrastadas por la influencia de aguas dulces y marinas. Los flujos tuvieron una alta variabilidad espacial y temporal pero no mostraron esquemas claros en su direccion e intensidad en relacion con las caracteristicas de los sedimentos o de la columna de agua de las dos estaciones. Esto evidencia una alta heterogeneidad en la naturaleza y actividad de los organismos responsables de los procesos biogeoquimicos. Los sedimentos liberaron en promedio al agua 1643 μmolNm -2 d -1 de amonio y 1.3 μmolNm -2 d -1 de nitrito, aportando a la columna el 1.90-3.41 % de lo requerido en la produccion. En condiciones oxicas normales, el sedimento actuo como sifon del fosforo, absorbiendo en promedio 178 μmolPm -2 d -1 disueltos y recibiendo 36277 μmolPm -2 d -1 particulados. Pero el fosforo se mantiene en exceso en la columna, en parte, por liberacion desde el sedimento en condiciones anoxicas durante florecimientos microalgales masivos. Flux of nitrogen and phosphorus at the water-sediment boundary in a tropical coastal lagoon (Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean) To evaluate the role of the sediment in the high primary production of a tropical coastal lagoon, "Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta" (Caribbean, Colombia), the flux of nitrogen and phosphorous (dissolved, inorganic, particulate) in the water-sediment boundary was measured. From 1996 to 1997 sediment cores were incubated in the laboratory and sediment traps were deployed in the field, in two sites contrasted by the influence of fresh and marine waters. The fluxes were spatially and temporally highly variable but did not show clear patterns in their direction and intensity in relation to the sediment or water column characteristics at the two sites. This evidences a high heterogeneity in the nature and activity of the organisms responsible of the biogeochemical processes. The sediments liberated to the water on average 1643 μmolNm -2 d -1 of ammonium and 1.3 μmolNm -2 d -1 of nitrite, offering 1.90-3.41 % of the amount required in production. In normal oxic conditions, the sediment acted as a phosphorous sink, absorbing on average 178 μmolPm -2 d -1 dissolved and receiving 36277 μmolPm-2d-1 particulate. But the phosphorous is maintained in excess in the column, in part, due to its liberation from the sediment in anoxic conditions during massive algal blooms.

To analyze and extract phylogenetic information from chemical characters, the 3b-hydroxysterol composition of 12 sponge species of various families of the Poriferan order Halichondrida (sensu lato), was determined. The current definition of the order is ambiguous, and its classification remains in a state of flux and hence, further chemical characters may aid in stabilizing it. Axinella corrugata, Pseudaxinella reticulata, P. explicata, Ptilocaulis walpersi, Dragmaxia undata (family Axinellidae), Myrmekioderma rea, M. gyroderma(family Desmoxyidae), Scopalina ruetzleri (family Dictyonellidae), Halichondria lutea, H. magniconulosa, Topsentia ophiraphidites and Petromica ciocalyptoides (family Halichondriidae) were collected in the Santa Marta area, Colombian Caribbean. Cladistic principles were used to advance a hypothesis of genealogical relationship among the studied species and to contrast current classifications at various taxonomic ranks. Sterol identity and various sterol properties (number of carbons, nuclei type, saturations and substitutions of the lateral chain) were coded as discrete characters according to their relative abundance in 4% ranges, for each of the studied species, and for an out group of 41 species of nine orders whose sterol fractions had been published. Of more than 300 codified characters, 74 constituted unique evolutionary novelties within the studied in group. Fifty-one of these characters (including 15 sterols) uniquely defined six species. Twelve sets of novel characters were shared exclusively by two or more species of the studied group and were thus informative in a phylogenetic sense. The cladogram, built by hand, had seven characters that were compatible with each other and were shared by two or more species (i.e. synapomorphies) and five that were incompatible with two or more. Fractionation of an acetone-methanol (1:1) extract of the Caribbean marine sponge Axinyssa ambrosia yielded three new sesquiterpenes whose structures were established by spectroscopic methods as (4R*,5R*,7S*,10R*)-eudesm-11-en-4-ylamine hydrochloride (1), axinyssamine hydrochloride, (4R*,5R*,7S*,10R*)-4-isocyanatoeudesm-11-ene (3), and (4R*,5R*,7S*,10R*)-formamidoeudesm-11-ene (4). Compound 1 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against cancer cells and was also active in a lethality test using polyps of the scleractinian coral Madracis mirabilis.

Caribbean sponges of the genus Ircinia contain high concentrations of linear furanosesterterpene tetronic acids (FTAs) and produce and exude low-molecular-weight volatile compounds (e.g., dimethyl sulfide, methyl isocyanide, methyl isothiocyanate) that give these sponges their characteristic unpleasant garlic odor. It has recently been suggested that FTAs are unlikely to function as antipredatory chemical defenses, and this function may instead be attributed to bioactive volatiles. We tested crude organic extracts and purified fractions isolated from Ircinia campana, I. felix, and I. strobilina at naturally occurring concentrations in laboratory and field feeding assays to determine their palatability to generalist fish predators. We also used a qualitative technique to test the crude volatile fraction from I. felix and I. strobilina and dimethylsulfide in laboratory feeding assays. Crude organic extracts of all three species deterred feeding of fishes in both aquarium and field experiments. Bioassay-directed fractionation resulted in the isolation of the FTA fraction as the sole active fraction of the nonvolatile crude extract for each species, and further assays of subfractions suggested that feeding deterrent activity is shared by the FTAs. FTAs deterred fish feeding in aquarium assays at concentrations as low as 0.5 mg/ml (fraction B, variabilin), while the natural concentrations of combined FTA fractions were >5.0 mg/ml for all three species. In contrast, natural mixtures of volatiles transferred from sponge tissue to food pellets and pure dimethylsulfide incorporated into food pellets were readily eaten by fish in aquarium assays. Although FTAs may play other ecological roles in Ircinia spp., these compounds are effective as defenses against potential predatory fishes. Volatile compounds may serve other defensive functions (e.g., antimicrobial, antifouling) but do not appear to provide a defense against fish predators.

On Caribbean reefs, the excavating sponge Cliona tenuis opportunistically colonized dead skeletons of the elkhorn coral Acropora palmata after its massive die-off in the 1980s. Further C. tenuis population increase occurred by colonization of other coral species, causing coral tissue death through undermining of live tissue and lateral growth. To follow up on a previous (2001) characterization of the abundance and size structure of C. tenuis at Islas del Rosario (Colombia), these factors were again estimated in 2014, along with its substratum utilization. The fate of sponge individuals colonizing massive coral colonies marked in 2001–2004 was also followed. By 2014 C. tenuis was still disproportionally occupying dead A. palmata branches, but its abundance and density, and the cover of other benthic elements, had not significantly changed over the 13-year period, suggesting that a stasis has been reached. Cliona tenuis was thus initially favored in the 1980s, but substratum monopolization did not occur. From 2001 to 2014, small individuals increased in number and very large ones decreased, suggesting not only that new recruitment is occurring, but also that larger sponges are shrinking or fragmenting. Marked sponges continued killing corals over the first few years, but over longer times they retreated or died, allowing corals to resume upward growth. However, it could not be ascertained whether the sponge retreat was age-related or the result of some environmental effect. The apparent preference for recently dead clean coral by larvae of C. tenuis and its current dynamics of recruitment, growth, fragmentation and mortality have stabilized its space occupation at Islas del Rosario.

Thinly encrusting sponges are diverse and ecologically important, but their taxonomy is challenging. In the Greater Caribbean, the recognition of species of Clathria (Thalysias), most of which are encrusting, is still problematic. Here we describe and clarify the taxonomy of eight species, three new to science, from material collected mostly in Colombia. These are C. (T.) virgultosa, C. (T.) curacaoensis, C. (T.) venosa, C. (T.) minuta, C. (T.) oxeota, C. (T.) sulfocleistochela n. sp., C. (T.) chelosigmoidea n. sp., and C. (T.) opalina n. sp. Underwater color photographs are provided, together with drawings of spicules and skeleton, and SEM images of spicules. Two other well-established Caribbean species of the subgenus, vis. C. (T.) isodictyoides and C. (T.) collosclera (both from Curaçao) were not found in the studied material. A key for their identification is provided. Three more records, C. (T.) fascicularis Topsent, 1889, C. (T.) procera (Ridley, 1884) and C. (T.) basiarenacea (Boury-Esnault, 1973) are outlined for further study.

The genus Agelas comprises a group of tropical and subtropical reef sponges that contains large, long-lived, often brightly colored and conspicuous species, distributed throughout the tropica l western Atlantic, temperate northern Atlantic (Mediterranean Sea), and western and central Indo-Pacific Realms. Among tropical sponge genera, Agelas is one with similar species richness in the Greater Caribbean in comparison to the Indo Pacific. The presence of verticillated acanthostyle spicules and a fibroreticulate skeleton of spongin fibres cored and/or echinated by spicules characterize this group. Taxonomic identification relies on a combination of characters, where external morphology and color play a key role, owing to the paucity of microscopical characters. Thus, there is still a great deal of taxonomic confusion, even for the more common species. We carried out a detailed revision of Agelas species throughout the Greater Caribbean area using classic taxonomic tools. Samples and observations covered Colombia, Belize, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Barbados, Curaçao and Venezuela, and included type material from major museum collections. According to our results, the genus Agelas in the Caribbean has at least thirteen valid species, viz. Agelas sceptrum (Lamarck, 1815); A. dispar DuchassaingMichelotti, 1864; A. dilatata DuchassaingMichelotti, 1864; A. clathrodes (Schmidt, 1870); A. cervicornis (Schmidt, 1870); A. conifera (Schmidt, 1870); A. schmidti Wilson, 1902; A. tubulata Lehnertvan Soest, 1996; A. wiedenmayeri Alcolado, 1984; A. citrina GoteraAlcolado, 1987; A. sventres Lehnertvan Soest, 1996; A. repens Lehnertvan Soest, 1998; and A. cerebrum Assmann et al., 2001. We found that variation of microscopic characteristics like skeleton arrangement, number of verticills and their spines, and spicule length and width, can be used as taxonomic tools, but only in a thorough comparison with other species in the same sub-regional context. Thus, a certain degree of familiarity with the genus' regional variation is often required. The richness and distribution of these species in the Caribbean area show north/south differences and other ecological patterns are evident.

Sterol compositions of the cold water ophiuroids Ophioplocus januarii and Ophionotus victoriae and of the tropical ophiuroids Ophiocoma echinata and Ophiocoma wendtii are reported. The four sterol mixtures contain Δ 5 mono- and di-unsaturated common 3β-hydroxy-sterols. Ophioplocus januarii and O. victoriae contain 24-methylcholesta-5,24(28)-dien-3β-ol and 24ζ-ethylcholesta-5,24(28)-dien-3β-ol in higher abundance than in O. echinata . These sterols were not found in O. wendtii . An interesting finding is the presence of Δ 5,24(28) -24- n -propylidenecholesterol in 7.6% in Ophionotus victoriae .

Sexual reproduction of the reef-building coral Montastrea cavernosa was studied in the Santa Marta area, Caribbean coast of Colombia, from October 1990 to October 1991. The area is subjected to a seasonal upwelling-outwelling regime. From microscopical analysis of tissue sections sampled each lunar month around the full moon, it was confirmed that this is a gonochoric, broadcasting species, with a single game- togenic cycle per year, and a 1:1 sex ratio. Oogenesis began a few weeks after spawning, and extended for 11 mo. The onset of spermatogenesis occurred just be- fore the full moon of June, later than at other localities where sea-water temperatures during the first half of the year are not as low. The amount of reproductive tissue strongly increased in both sexes after July, in association with an increase in sea-water temperature and a decrease in photoperiod. The gonad index of fully mature female colonies was about four times lower than at other lo- calities, perhaps due to the stressful seasonal regime. The male gonad index was lower than that of the female, indicating sex-related dierences in the rates of biomass allocation to reproduction. As in other Caribbean lo- calities, spawning occurred after the full moons of Au- gust and September. However, there was some evidence of a third spawning episode after the full moon of Oc- tober, possibly associated with a delay in the occurrence of maximum sea-water temperatures in near-equatorial localities compared to higher latitudes. The probability of cross-fertilization in this species with a gonochoric breeding system and a broadcasting mode of re- production is favored by its balanced sex ratio, its usually high within-reef zone abundance, and by local- ized and repeated spawning episodes, synchronized by lunar phase.

Although there is a long history of taxonomic investigation in Caribbean sponges, there are still many undescribed species. Furthermore, field observations and corroborating morphological analyses are revealing that what was believed to be single, somewhat variable species, may consist of two or more species, often easier to distinguish once well characterized. This is the case for Dragmacidon reticulatum (Ridley & Dendy, 1886) (Porifera, Demospongiae, Axinellida, Axinellidae), a rather well-known sponge, with an ample distribution and presence in rocky and reef environments of the tropical and subtropical Western Atlantic, with local records in the majority of the countries of the area, from Bermuda to Brazil. Field observations and a detailed review of material from different areas, including some type specimens, led us to the distinction of two different species in terms of external morphology, size of spicules, and skeletal architecture. The distinction was confirmed in the Bahamas and Santa Marta, Colombia, where the two species coexist. One of the species is Dragmacidon reticulatum sensu stricto, but for the other there is need to erect a new name, for which we propose Dragmacidon alvarezae n. sp. The purpose of the present work is to describe, illustrate and compare these two species.

New sponge species belonging to the closely related fistular genera Zyzzya, Cornulella, Damiria, and Acheliderma are described from reef habitats off the coasts of Colombia, Bonaire and Curaçao in the southern Caribbean. With very few exceptions these sponges are small to tiny specimens inhabiting crevices and other cryptic habitats; some may be excavating. For comparison both published and unpublished material belonging to these genera from other parts of the world was examined, and this yielded several nomenclatorial changes and a further three new species from the Indian Ocean. The new species are: Zyzzya invemar (Caribbean), Cornulella santamartae (Caribbean), C. tyro (Seychelles), C. amirantensis (Seychelles), Damiria leonorae (Caribbean), D. toxifera (Seychelles) and Acheliderma lisannae (Caribbean). All species belonging to these genera, as well as to the closely related Indo-Pacific genus Paracornulum, are briefly diagnosed. The genera and species of this group are found to be distributed over tropical and subtropical waters of all three oceans. The five genera were so far of controversial systematic allocation, although their close relationship with Cornulum was generally accepted. The recently revived family Iophonidae is demonstrated to be the likely assemblage for them. A brief survey of Iophonidae genera is presented and a preliminary phylogenetic analysis of the fistular genera is attempted. Although several parts of the phylogenetic relationships remain unsolved, it is nevertheless clear that in all genera the closest relatives are not found in adjacent areas, but are often disjunct.

Recruitment of demosponges (Porifera, Demospongiae) was monitored bimonthly for one year (March 1987 – March 1988) on acrylic plates, and compared to cover of adults, in six rocky and coral reef habitats at Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean, an area subjected to seasonal, upwelling-outwelling regimes. According to suggestive but not significant trends, recruitment rates are more positively influenced by the total sponge cover near groups of plates than by cover at a larger (habitat) scale; recruit mortality is lower where recruitment is higher. These findings are in agreement with a model of higher settlement (probably due to short-distance dispersal) and lower postsettlement mortality within a few meters of adult sponges. Recruitment varied seasonally, being relatively high from May to November-December during the rainy, outwelling season, when seawater temperature was warmer, water turbidity higher, and benthic algal density lower; it was very low from January to April during the dry, upwelling season.

The sponge Discodermia dissoluta is the source of the potent antimitotic compound (+)-discodermolide. The relatively abundant and shallow populations of this sponge in Santa Marta, Colombia, allow for studies to evaluate the natural and biotechnological supply options of (+)-discodermolide. In this work, an RP-HPLC-UV methodology for the quantification of (+)-discodermolide from sponge samples was tested and validated. Our protocol for extracting this compound from the sponge included lyophilization, exhaustive methanol extraction, partitioning using water and dichloromethane, purification of the organic fraction in RP-18 cartridges and then finally retrieving the (+)-discodermolide in the methanol-water (80:20 v/v) fraction. This fraction was injected into an HPLC system with an Xterra RP-18 column and a detection wavelength of 235 nm. The calibration curve was linear, making it possible to calculate the LODs and quantification in these experiments. The intra-day and inter-day precision showed relative standard deviations lower than 5%. The accuracy, determined as the percentage recovery, was 99.4%. Nine samples of the sponge from the Bahamas, Bonaire, Curaçao and Santa Marta had concentrations of (+)-discodermolide ranging from 5.3 to 29.3 microg/g(-1) of wet sponge. This methodology is quick and simple, allowing for the quantification in sponges from natural environments, in situ cultures or dissociated cells.

During a study of the spatial and temporal patterns of desmosponge (Porifera, Demospongiae) recruitment on rocky and coral reef habitats of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean Sea, preliminary attempts were made to estimate actual settlement rates from short-term (1 to a few days) recruitment censuses. Short-term recruitment rates on black, acrylic plastic plates attached to open, non-cryptic substratum by anchor screws were low and variable (0–5 recruits/plate in 1–2 days, sets of n=5–10 plates), but reflected the depth and seasonal trends found using mid-term (1 to a few months) censusing intervals. Moreover, mortality of recruits during 1–2 day intervals was low (0–12%). Thus, short-term censusing intervals can be used to estimate actual settlement rates. To be able to make statistical comparisons, however, it is necessary to increase the number of recruits per census by pooling data of n plates per set, and to have more than one set per site or treatment.

Phylogenetic relationships of symbiotic dinoflagellate lineages, distributed in all tropical and subtropical seas, suggest strategies for long distance dispersal but at the same time strong host specialization. Zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium: Dinophyta), which are associated to diverse shallow-water cnidarians, also engage in symbioses with some sponge species of the genus Cliona. In the Caribbean, zooxanthellae-bearing Cliona has recently become abundant due to global warming, overfishing, and algae abundance. Using molecular techniques, the symbionts from five excavating species (Cliona caribbaea, C. tenuis, C. varians, C. aprica and C. laticavicola) from the southern and southwestern Caribbean were surveyed. Several DNA sequence regions were used in order to confirm zooxanthellae identity; 18S rDNA, domain V of chloroplast large subunit (cp23S), internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2), and ITS2 secondary structure. Sequence analyses corroborated the presence of three zooxanthellae clades: A, B, and G. Presence of clades A and B in common boring sponges of the Caribbean fit with the general pattern of the province. The discovery of clade G for the first time in any organism of the Atlantic Ocean leads us to consider this unusual finding as a phylogenetic relict through common ancestors of sponge clades or an invasion of the sponge from the Indo-Pacific.

Long-term monitoring data provide a basis to recognize changes in coral reef communities and to implement appropriate management strategies. Unfortunately, coral reef dynamics have been poorly documented at any temporal scale in the Southern Caribbean. Through the "National Monitoring System of Coral Reefs in Colombia" (Spanish acronym: SIMAC), we assessed 32 permanent plots at different depth levels in six reefs areas of the Colombian Caribbean from 1998 to 2004. Temporal trends in coral and algal cover were evaluated by repeated measures ANOVA. The model included the effect of depth levels (a fixed effect), monitoring plots (a random effect) as a nested factor within depths, and time (repeated factor). We found high spatial variability in major benthic components. Overall means indicated that algae were the most abundant biotic component in nearly all areas, ranging from 30.3% at Rosario to 53.3% at San Andrés. Live coral cover varied considerably from 10.1% at Santa Marta up to 43.5% at Urabá. Coral and algae cover per se are not always accurate reef indicators and therefore they need supplementary information. Temporal analyses suggested relative stability of coral and algal cover along the study but the causes for the observed trends were rarely identified. A significant decrease (p=0.042) in coral cover was only identified for some monitoring plots in Tayrona-time x plot (depth level) interaction, and importantly, few coral species explained this trend. Significant increase (p=0.005) in algal cover was observed over time for most plots in Rosario. Temporal trajectories in algal cover were influenced by depth-significant time x depth interaction-in San Andrés (increase, p=0.004) and Urabá (decrease, p=0.027). Algae trends were mainly explained by changes in algal turfs. Monitoring programs must focus on the mechanisms mediating the changes, in particular those concerning coral recovery and reef resilience in the current context of climate change. Rev. Biol. Los patrones temporales de algas y corales fueron evaluados mediante análisis de varianza de medidas repetidas. Los promedios generales indicaron que las algas dominaron en la mayoría de las áreas evaluadas, variando de 30.3% (Rosario) hasta 53.3% (San Andrés). La cobertura coralina fluctuó considerablemente entre 10.1% (Santa Marta) y 43.5% (Urabá). Los arrecifes estudiados han permanecido relativamente estables durante el periodo evaluado en términos de algas y corales. El único cambio significativo en la cobertura se detectó en algunas parcelas de monitoreo del Tayrona, y pocas especies coralinas explicaron la tendencia de disminución. En Rosario se detectó una tendencia significativa de incremento para las algas en la mayoría de las parcelas. En San Andrés y Urabá las tendencias temporales (aumento y disminución respectivamente) se presentaron en ciertos niveles de profundidad. En estas dos áreas las tendencias en la cobertura de las algas fueron explicadas principalmente por cambios en los tapetes algales. En general las causas de los patrones observados no pudieron identificarse. Los programas de monitoreo deben evaluar no solo las tendencias generales de algas y corales sino también las de sus componentes (especies de coral y grupos funcionales de algas). Así mismo, deben enfocarse en evaluar los mecanismos involucrados en los cambios, en especial aquellos relacionados con la recuperación coralina y la resiliencia arrecifal, de manera que se pueda enfrentar el deterioro arrecifal en el actual contexto de cambio climático.

[reaction: see text] (-)-(5S)-2-Imino-1-methylpyrrolidine-5-carboxylic acid (1), previously reported as the N-acetyl-beta-d-glucosaminidase inhibitor pyrostatin B, has been isolated from the organic extracts of the burrowing sponge Cliona tenuis. The structure of 1, including its absolute stereochemistry, was characterized from its spectral data and chemical transformations and confirmed by total synthesis. The synthesis of 1 reveals that the structure of pyrostatin B has been incorrectly assigned. Comparison of NMR spectral data strongly suggests that pyrostatins A and B are identical to 5-hydroxyectoine and ectoine, respectively.

18S ribosomal DNA and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) full-length sequences, each of which was sequenced three times, were used to construct phylogenetic trees with alignments based on secondary structures, in order to elucidate genealogical relationships within the Aplysinidae (Verongida). The first poriferan ITS-2 secondary structures are reported. Altogether 11 Aplysina sponges and 3 additional sponges (Verongula gigantea, Aiolochroia crassa, Smenospongia aurea) from tropical and subtropical oceans were analyzed. Based on these molecular studies, S. aurea, which is currently affiliated with the Dictyoceratida, should be reclassified to the Verongida. Aplysina appears as monophyletic. A soft form of Aplysina lacunosa was separated from other Aplysina and stands at a basal position in both 18S and ITS-2 trees. Based on ITS-2 sequence information, the Aplysina sponges could be distinguished into a single Caribbean–Eastern Pacific cluster and a Mediterranean cluster. The species concept for Aplysina sponges as well as a phylogenetic history with a possibly Tethyan origin is discussed.

Aunque la temperatura superficial del mar se ha considerado como la variable ambiental con mayor incidencia en el blanqueamiento coralino, se ha encontrado que otras variables también intervienen en este fenómeno, modificando la susceptibilidad de los arrecifes y generando diferencias espaciales. En el Caribe colombiano se estudiaron las variables de temperatura superficial del mar, clorofila, turbidez, caudal de ríos, vientos y nubosidad durante los blanqueamientos coralinos en cuatro localidades. Mediante análisis multivariados y de valores extremos, se encontró que los blanqueamientos han ocurrido principalmente en el segundo semestre del año a nivel de cuenca, de costa continental y local. En los arrecifes costeros, la turbidez del agua por la entrada de agua dulce ha sido determinante en el blanqueamiento, mientras que en los oceánicos lo ha sido el aumento de temperatura. Así, fenómenos macroclimáticos como La Niña influyen en la ocurrencia de los blanqueamientos cerca de la costa. Los datos muestran que es necesario monitorizar de forma más continua el blanqueamiento y que las zonas más expuestas son las Islas del Rosario y San Bernardo. While sea surface temperature has been considered the environmental variable with the greatest impact on coral bleaching, other variables also modify the susceptibility of reefs and generate spatial differences of this phenomenon.In four locations in the Colombian Caribbean, sea surface temperature, chlorophyll, turbidity, flow of rivers, winds and clouds were studied during coral bleaching. Using a principal components and maximum values analysis, we found that bleaching occurred mainly in the second half of the year, at three spatial levels: basin, coastal zone andlocal. In the coastal reefs, water turbidity by freshwater input was determinant in bleaching, while in the open ocean, temperature was the determinant variable. Thus, macroclimatic phenomena like La Niña influence the occurrence of bleaching near the coast. The volatile constituents of the marine sponge Ircinia felix were obtained by dynamic headspace extraction and analyzed by HRGC, HRGC-MS and HRGC-Odor at sniffing port. Fifty-nine volatiles were identified for the first time in the odor of this sponge. Hydrocarbons (32.9%), alcohols (17.8%) and carbonyl compounds (16.0%) predominated in the sponge volatile profile, followed by esters (11.6%), halogen compounds (8.6%), ethers (7.7%), nitrogen and/or sulfur compounds (4.6%) and carboxylic acids (0.8%). Among the identified volatiles, thiobismethane (commonly known as dimethylsulfide), methyl isocyanide and methyl isothiocyanate were found to be responsible for the nauseating and toxic smell emitted by the sponge and for the antimicrobial activity detected in the volatile extract. Exudation experiments in aquarium and in situ conditions revealed that thiobismethane, methyl isocyanide and methyl isothiocyanate are continuously released by the sponge. Upon injury, the concentration of these volatiles increased strongly. Hence, these substances form a chemical protective barrier which may help these sponges avoid fouling, compete for space, prevent infection in the short term, and/or signal generalist predators regarding the existence of other toxic substances in the internal tissues.

Thirteen reef areas of Colombian territories in the Southwestern Caribbean were surveyed during the last 10 years. Coral diseases have been recorded in all these areas since 1990 and some of them have increased progressively. Six types were differentiated in the region, of which black band disease (BBD), dark spots disease (DSD), white band disease (WBD) and white plague disease (WPD) are widespread and common. Yellow band disease (YBD) was observed only since April 1998 but has been found now in seven reef areas and eight coral species (most of them recorded here as new hosts). In total, 25 species of hard corals were observed with diseases in the region, of which Colpophyllia natans, Diploria labyrinthiformis, Montastraea annularis, M. faveolata, M. franksi and Acropora spp. appear to be highly susceptible.

A detailed analysis of the secondary metabolites of a specimen of Agelas sventres was carried out here for the first time. The chemistry of Agelas sponges is dominated by bromopyrrole derivatives. Besides three known bromopyrrole metabolites, a new compound, sventrin (1), was isolated and its structure identified using spectroscopic methods. Sventrin (1) was shown to be a feeding deterrent compound against a common omnivorous reef fish.

Direct field observations often reveal distinct morphotypes within sponge species that had been described on the basis of preserved material from different locations. The genus Axinyssa von Lendefeld, 1897 was revised for the Caribbean by Diaz et al . (1993), defining a single species, Axinyssa ambrosia (de Laubenfels, 1936), with several junior synonyms, some of which varied in the predominant spicule complement. At Santa Marta, Colombia, we found two morphotypes of Axinyssa living sympatrically, with consistent differences in morphology and spiculation. Revision of types and part of Diaz et al . (1993) material confirmed these differences, leading to the distinction of two species whose valid names are Axinyssa ambrosia and Axinyssa yumae (Pulitzer-Finali, 1986). The purpose of this note is to redescribe these two species.

Se realizó una clasificación numérica de 21 estaciones de monitoreo del sistema laguno-estuarino comprendido por la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta y el Complejo Pajarales, de acuerdo a su similaridad en el comportamiento de la salinidad del agua. Se utilizó información quincenal comprendida entre enero de 1987 y octubre de 1991. Debido a la estructura de autocorrelación de los datos fue necesario emplear los modelos ARIMA de series de tiempo en primer lugar, y posteriormente aplicar una técnica de clasificación normal con los coeficientes de la representación infinita AR calculados para cada estación. Los resultados del análisis fueron coherentes con las hipótesis planteadas acerca de la distribución de la variable en el sistema. A numerical classification of 21 monitoring stations of the lagoonal-estuarine system comprised by the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta and Pajarales complex was carried out according to their similarity in water salinity behavior. Biweekly data from January 1987 to Octuber 1991 was used. Due to the autocorrelation structure of the data, it was necessary to use first time series ARIM A models followed by normal cluster analysis of the AR coefficients of infinite representation calculated for each station. The results were coherent with hypotheses concerning the distribution of the variable in the system.

De la esponja marina Ágelas schmidti recolectada en la bahía de Santa Marta (Caribe Colombiano), se aisló por cromatografía en columna sobre silica gel la fracción esterólica. Los esteróles presentes en esta fracción fueron sometidos a Cromatografía Líquida de Alta Eficiencia preparativa en fase reversa y analizados por Cromatografía de Gases de Alta Resolución y Cromatografía de Gases de Alta Resolución acoplada a Espectrometría de Masas. De dieciocho esteróles separados, diecisiete fueron identificados presentando la mayoría de ellos núcleos A" y A' con cadenas laterales convencionales.

Se analizaron las variaciones día-noche y entre días en la composición del zooplancton superficial y se relacionaron con parámetros ambientales en la bahía de Santa Marta, Caribe colombiano, mediante análisis de componentes principales. Los muestreos se realizaron cada cuatro horas en tres días diferentes entre agosto y octubre de 1989. La mayor variación en abundancia (primer componente principal) se manifestó en un aumento sobre el promedio en casi todos los grupos en el atardecer y las horas de la noche. Esta variación resultó significativamente correlacionada en forma inversa con la intensidad de la luz incidente y se interpretó como un reflejo en superficie del fenómeno de migración vertical. De otro lado, en el segundo y tercer componente principal se evidenciaron las diferencias entre días para los grupos y dentro de los grupos; las que ocurrieron entre el primer día de muestreo y los otros dos fueron resaltadas por el segundo componente, y resultaron correlacionadas negativamente con la temperatura y positivamente con los nitratos disueltos. Estas se interpretaron como resultado de movimientos de masas de agua de características fisicoquímicas y composición zooplanctónica diferente sobre el sitio de muestreo. Sin embargo, no se pudo descartar que hubiera una asociación estrecha entre estos parámetros y cambios en los movimientos migratorios. Day-night and between-day variation in surficial zooplankton composition and its relationship to environmental parameters were analyzed in the Santa Marta Bay, Colombian Caribbean, by Principal Components Analysis. Sampling was carried out every four hours in three different days between August and October 1989. The greatest variation in abundance (first principal component) was due to an increase over the mean in most groups at nightfall and during night hours. This variation was inversely and significantly correlated with incident light intensity, and was interpreted as consequence of the vertical migration out of the surface zone. On the other hand, the second and third principal components showed differences amog days for groups and within groups; those that existed in the first sampling day with respect to the other two were highlighted by the second component, and were negatively correlated with temperature and positively correlated with disolved nitrates. These results were interpreted as a consequence of movements of water masses with different physical-chemical characteristics and zoo-plankton composition over the sampling site. However, a case of close association between these parameters and the changes in migrating movements could not be ruled out.

A new sulfated alkene (1) has been isolated from the ophiuroid Ophiocoma echinata, and its structure was determined by spectroscopic methods to be 4,8-dimethylnon-3-ene-1-sodium sulfate. This is the first report of a sulfated alkene from an ophiuroid.

It is known that the encrusting and excavating Caribbean sponge Cliona delitrix may increase its abundance near sources of sewage. To ascertain whether its current conspicuousness in leeward reefs of San Andrés Island (SW Caribbean, Colombia) is related to organic pollution from local raw sewage discharges, quantitative data on density and cover of this sponge and other benthic components was obtained from belt and line transects at seven stations along the shallow (5-10 m deep) terrace. Coral mucus was sampled to quantify Escherichia coli bacteria, as an approximate indicator of sewage plume influence on benthic biota. A negative multiplicative regression between amount of E. coli in coral mucus and distance from the main raw sewage outlet demonstrated the domestic-wastes origin of the bacteria. Whereas significant E. coli counts occurred only up to 1-2 km from sewage sources, overall sewage influence may extend further as moderate C. delitrix abundances occurred throughout the West shallow terrace of San Andrés, apparently associated to the overall nutrient enrichment from sewage. C. delitrix abundances were lower in the Southwest, farthest from sewage influence, and generally increased towards sewage sources, but decreased near the main sewage outlet. Close to sewage sources, any positive effect on the sponge brought about by the increase in suspended organic matter is probably outweighed by the negative effect that excessive sedimentation has on the sponge itself, and on the quantity and quality of substratum available for settlement.
