In three Scandinavian peatlands we studied to what extent plant and microbial community compositions are governed by local-scale microhabitat, with a special interest in the effect of aspect (i.e. exposition of slopes). Despite differences in solar irradiance between the south- and north-facing slopes, maximum temperature was elevated in the south-facing slopes at the most northern site only. Pore-water nutrient concentrations were not affected by aspect, yet dissolved organic carbon concentrations were higher in the south-facing microhabitats. This was likely caused by higher vascular plant biomass. Plant and microbial community composition clearly differed among sites. In all three sites, microhabitat (i.e. prevailing water-table depth) affected the plant and microbial community compositions. Aspect, however, did not affect community composition, even though microclimate significantly differed between the south- and the north-facing aspects at the northernmost site. The environmental and social challenges of the planet are a sad reality. Organic Agriculture advocates often espouse its contributions to mitigating the negative effects of farming. But mitigation alone is not enough. Farmers also need to adapt to a changed climate, reduced biodiversity and depleted resources as well as to an ever-changing socio-cultural environment.

Organic is not the only initiative with the aim of improving sustainability in agriculture. There is a wide array of approaches, perspectives, priorities and levels of ambition. Certain initiatives are seen as complimentary to Organic Agriculture and use it as a basis. Others are viewed as followers, competitors or – due to lower sustainability requirements – even as "greenwashers". As not all assessments of standards and impacts recognize a leading position for Organic farming, there is room for improvement.

The EU countries aim to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) by 80-95% by 2050 (European Commission, 2011). The food sector accounts today for 25% of Swedish greenhouse gas emissions, most of which arise in agricultural production, so there is a need for radical reduction of GHG emissions in this sector. For organic farming in Sweden, this implies that it is time to move beyond the discussion on whether organic products have a lower or higher life-cycle climate impact than conventional products (Cederberg et al 2011). Instead, the interesting question is: What can and should be done to drastically reduce the climate impact of organic agriculture? The science-based response to that question is relevant for Swedish agriculture as a whole. Development towards lower climate impact from organic agriculture requires further monitoring and technology development to reduce emissions of nitrous oxide, methane and carbon dioxide. But it also involves developing production systems that are more efficient in the use of nutrients, energy and land, as well as shifting focus from producing animal food towards more legume, grain, vegetable and fruit products.

Organic agriculture is dependent on fossil fuels, just like conventional agriculture, but this can be reduced by the use of on-farm biomass resources. The energy efficiency and environmental impacts of different alternatives can be assessed by life cycle assessment (LCA), which we have done in this project. Swedish organic milk production can become self-sufficient in energy by using renewable sources available on the farm, with biogas from manure as the main energy source. Thereby greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the production system can be reduced, both by substituting fossil fuels and by reducing methane emissions from manure. The arable organic farm studied in the project could be self-sufficient in energy by using the residues available in the crop rotation. Because of soil carbon losses, the greenhouse gas emission savings were lower with the use of straw ethanol, heat and power (9%) than by using ley for biogas production (35%). In this research project, the system boundaries were set at energy self-sufficiency at farm or farm-cluster level. Heat and fuel were supplied as needed, and electricity production was equal to use on an annual basis. In practice, however, better resource efficiency can be achieved by making full use of available energy infrastructure, and basing production on resource availability and economic constraints, rather than a narrow self-sufficiency approach.

Organic farming is known to be a knowledge intensive production system and there is a strong need for new knowledge and innovations to achieve increased sustainability. Furthermore, many of the research goals defined in national and international research strategies for organic agriculture are addressing questions relating to the development of more sustainable food and farming systems in general. Organic systems can thus be seen as a fore-runner and an innovation system to sustainable food and farming (TP Organics, 2009; EPOK, 2013).

To monitor emissions of NH3 and N2O during composting and link these to ammonia oxidation rates and the community structure of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB). A laboratory-scale compost reactor treating organic household waste was run for 2 months. NH3 emissions peaked when pH started to increase. Small amounts of N2O and CH4 were also produced. In total, 16% and less than 1% of the initial N was lost as NH3-N and N2O-N respectively. The potential ammonia oxidation rate, determined by a chlorate inhibition assay, increased fourfold during the first 9 days and then remained high. Initially, both Nitrosospira and Nitrosomonas populations were detected using DGGE analysis of AOB specific 16S rRNA fragments. Only Nitrosomonas europaea was detected under thermophilic conditions, but Nitrosospira populations re-established during the cooling phase. Thermophilic conditions favoured high potential ammonia oxidation rates, suggesting that ammonia oxidation contributed to reduced NH3 emissions. Small but significant amounts of N2O were emitted during the thermophilic phase. The significance of different AOBs detected in the compost for ammonia oxidation is not clear. This study shows that ammonia oxidation occurs at high temperature composting and therefore most likely reduces NH3 emissions.

The aims of this study were 1) to characterize changes in matrix metalloproteinase (NIMP), endostatin, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A expression in skeletal muscle in response to a single bout of exercise in humans; and 2) to determine if any exchange of endostatin and VEGF-A between circulation and the exercising leg is associated with a change in the tissue expression or plasma concentration of these factors. Ten healthy males performed 65 min of cycle exercise, and muscle biopsies were obtained from the vastus lateralis muscle at rest and immediately and 120 min after exercise. In the muscle biopsies, measurements of mRNA expression levels of MMP-2, MMP-9, MMP-14, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase; VEGF and endostatin protein levels; and NIMP activities were performed. Femoral arterial and venous concentrations of VEGF-A and endostatin were determined before, during, and 120 min after exercise. A single bout of exercise increased MMP-9 mRNA and activated MMP-9 protein in skeletal muscle. No measurable increase of endostatin was observed in the skeletal muscle or in plasma following exercise. A concurrent increase in skeletal muscle VEGF-A mRNA and protein levels was induced by exercise, with no signs of peripheral uptake from the circulation. However, a decrease in plasma VEGF-A concentration occurred following exercise. Thus 1) a single bout of exercise activated the MMP system without any resulting change in tissue endostatin protein levels, and 2) the increased VEGF-A protein levels are due to changes in the skeletal muscle tissue itself. Other mechanisms are responsible for the observed exercise-induced decrease in VEGF-A in plasma.
