Efforts concern a program to develop a meaningful, realistic, and easily implementable method consisten on a worldwide basis for measuring materiel readiness of the Hawk and Nike-Hercules surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems.

The report examines the performance and cost of various transportation systems in the northern (Arctic) environment. The scenarios used include both civilian and military transportation problems, and the study explores some of the relationships among these in an Alaskan environment. Systems examined include such conventional systems as railroads, trucks, boats, and tracked vehicles, plus more advanced systems as fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft and surface effect vehicles (SEVs). In addition to these comparative analyses, certain specific issues are examined in some detail. Included in such issues are the economics of using SEVs as transitional vehicles in undeveloped regions, prior to investment in roads and railroads, the potential utility of a SEV-helicopter team in search and rescue missions, and the relationship between transportation and Alaskan development. The theory of the feedback regulation of blood clotting, previously reported was extended to include positive action of thrombin on blood factors and platelets. The thermodynamics of protein interaction with surfaces was developed in a preliminary manner and provides a basis for taking into account the influence of both surface energy and charge on clotting. Other studies were published relating to the theory of bioelectrode phenomena and in vivo energy sources. (Author)

The major emphasis of this report is related to problems associated to theory and mechanism of blood clotting. The first study relates to the thermodynamics of protein adsorption onto surfaces. This study provides a uniform theory of the interaction between proteins and surfaces which takes into account both surface energy and surface charge among other factors. Further studies were undertaken of the mathematical treatment of the cascade theory of blood coagulation, taking into account the regulation provided by negative feedback mechanisms. This work provides an important extension of our earlier studies. Other studies related to bio-electrodes with reference to their applications in energy conversion in physiological environment and as sensing devices. The paper constitutes a final report on a study of the surface properties of glasses as they relate to the glass-polymer interfacial bonding in glass reinforced plastics. A brief review of the findings of two previous reports is given, and the results of titration and electron microscopy studies of E and 994 glasses treated with coupling agents is included. The results indicate that preferential sites for aqueous attack found in the previous work on clean glass surfaces are present on the glasses treated with the coupling agents. A summary of the results of the work is also included. (Author)

As part of a program concerned with the influence of surface properties of glass on the behavior of reinforced plastics, we report here on an electron microscope study of aqueous attack on glass. Micrographs of E and 994 glasses, treated in solution of pH 2 through 11, are shown and a discussion of these micrographs is given. The effects of large scale phase separation in these glasses are discussed and plausible mechanisms for aqueous attack on these glasses are given. A detailed discussion of glass structure and a survey of earlier work on chemical attack is given in the introduction. An alternative approach to the boric oxide anomaly is also suggested. (Author)

As part of a program concerned with the influence of surface properties of glass on the behavior of reinforced plastics, a report is made on the formation of films on the surface of E glass on exposure to Oxalic acid solutions. No such films were observed with 994 glass treated under identical conditions. As is well known, both of these glasses are employed in the production of glass reinforced plastic. Evidence is provided that the film is associated with the Ca+2 ions in E glass. Experiments indicate that this ion is deficient in the surface of E glass. Thus fractured E glass exhibits much more rapid film formation than the native surface. Moreover, prior removal of the native surface on treatment with NaOH solution also results in more rapid film formation. (Author)
