The excitation testing of high temperature superconducting (HTS) coil with Bi2212 cables is examined for development of high energy density superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES). Findings reveal the confirmation of sufficient thermal stability during the thermal runaway test.

A study reports on the development of four, properly operating magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems with gantry-free horizontal dewar at Tokyo, Kanezawa and Osaka, Japan; and Boston, MA. The number of sensors in these instruments range from 96-160. The specification of the sensor complex enables configurations up to a 208-channel gradiometer system. System configuration, an illustration of the MEG response and the merits of gantry-free horizontal dewars in terms of user-friendliness are discussed.

The fabrication of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor's (ITER) Central Solenoid (CS) Model Coil - Outer Module is nearly complete save for the epoxy impregnation of concrete whole layers. The international project, undertaken to justify the CS design for the ITER, has had all of its wound and heat treated layers symmetrically installed with the insulation on the same axis. The layer-to-layer butt joint has also been installed.

This paper describes a new data acquisition system for the focal plane polarimeter of the Grand Raiden spectrometer at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) in Osaka, Japan. Data are acquired by a Creative Electronic Systems (CES) Starburst [1], which is a CAMAC auxiliary crate controller equipped with a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) J11 microprocessor. The data on the Starburst are transferred to a VME single-board computer. A VME reflective memory module broadcasts the data to other systems through a fiber-optic link. A data transfer rate of 2.0 Mbytes/s between VME modules has been achieved by reflective memories. This rate includes the overhead of buffer management. The overall transfer rate, however, is limited by the performance of the Starburst to about 160 Kbytes/s at maximum. In order to further improve the system performance, we developed a new readout module called the Rapid Data Transfer Module (RDTM). RDTM's transfer data from LeCroy PCOS III's or 4298's, and FERA/FERET's directly to CES 8170 High Speed Memories (HSM) in VME crates. The data transfer rate of the RDTM from PCOS III's to the HSM is about 4 Mbytes/s.

An ultrahigh-performance magnetically shielded room was completed as a part of a biomagnetic measuring system using superconducting quantum interference device. From the difference between environmental magnetic noise and a signal, necessary shielding factor was decided to be 1/100000 at low frequencies and 1/1000 at high frequencies. The soccer ball shaped room consists of four layers of permalloy and a layer of aluminum, and provides a space 4 meters in diameter in which magnetic fields are very weak. An independent base was built and the room was fixed rigidly to it. Because permalloy is very sensitive to shocks, the materials for the room were cut in the factory, carried with care, and assembled with screws on site. Xenon lamps supply light via optical fibers and the room is ventilated by way of many small holes in the floor. The door is equipped with the air pressure system.

Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) has been designing and developing the Central Solenoid (CS) model coil for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). The CS model coil is composed of two modules and they will be manufactured by United States Home Team and Japanese Home Team. The coil winding method is two-conductors-in-hand and the coil which has an inner diameter of 1.6 m and an outer diameter of 3.6 m, produces a maximum field of 13 T. The coil will be tested in the JAERI facility. This paper describes the coil design, manufacturing procedure, stress analysis on the winding pack and AC loss analysis.

Critical current of [Nb.sub.3]Al is less sensitive to strain than [Nb.sub.3]Sn. This characteristic makes a React-and-Wind method applicable in a large dimension coil. By applying the React-and-Wind method for Toloidal Field (TF) coil, technical difficulties in transfer of the conductor after reaction are eliminated and construction cost of magnet system can be reduced in comparison with a Wind-React-Insulate-Transfer method. Therefore, the [Nb.sub.3]Al conductor has large potential as candidate for the TF conductor. The experiment of a 60 kA-12.5T [Nb.sub.3]Al Insert is projected to demonstrate applicability of the React-and-Wind method with the [Nb.sub.3]Al conductor. The React-and-Wind method will be employed in the winding and 0.4% bending strain will be applied to the conductor. The major characteristics of the [Nb.sub.3]Al Insert are reported in this paper.

This paper presents flow behavior with an oscillating motion of an impinging jet upon a flame dome head and its reattachment to the casing wall when a distorted flow is provided at the inlet of the dump diffuser combustor. A Laser-Doppler Velocimeter was used for the measurements of the time-averaged flow within a sudden expansion region. A surface pressure fluctuation survey on the flame dome head and flow visualization by a smoke wire technique with a high-speed video camera were conducted from the viewpoint of the unsteady flow features of the impinging jet. There exists a high-vorticity region at the jet boundary, resulting in the production of turbulence kinetic energy. In particular, higher vorticity is observed in the higher velocity side of the jet. The jet near the dome head has favorable characteristics about the flow rate distribution into the branched channel. Reynolds shear stress and turbulence energy are produced near the reattachment region. The jet has an oscillating motion near the dome head with asymmetric vortex formation at the jet boundary.

A semi-portable direct current-superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer system is developed for studying diseases of the human heart and brain. The system is equipped with a liquid helium continuous cryostat with a cool down time of 20 minutes. The pickup coil is made of Nb-Ti-Cu wire. The magnetometer has a very low white noise level and allows reliable magnetocardiogram measurements.

A multichannel biomagnetic measurement system has been developed for brain research. The system is equipped with direct current superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) and axial first-order gradiometers for improved flux resolution. The SQUIDs are hermetically sealed in a ceramic package to enhance system reliability. Flexible printed circuits are also provided to decrease the liquid helium evaporation rate.
