56. The Azores: A Mid-Atlantic Hotspot for Marine Megafauna Research and Conservation

Abstract

The increasing public perception that marine megafauna is under threat is an outstanding incentive to investigate their essential habitats (EMH), their responses to human and climate change pressures, and to better understand their largely unexplained behaviors and physiology. Yet, this poses serious challenges such as the elusiveness and remoteness of marine megafauna, the growing scrutiny and legal impositions on their study, and difficulties in disentangling environmental drivers from human disturbance. We argue that advancing our knowledge and conservation on marine megafauna can and should be capitalized in regions where exceptional access to multiple species (i.e., megafauna ‘hotspots’) combines with the adequate legal framework, sustainable practices, and research capacity. The wider Azores region, hosting EMHs of all key groups of vulnerable or endangered vertebrate marine megafauna, is a singular EMH hotspot on a migratory crossroads, linking eastern and western Atlantic margins and productive boreal waters to tropical seas. It benefits from a sustainable development model based on artisanal fisheries with zero or minor megafauna bycatch, and one of the largest marine protected area networks in the Atlantic covering coastal, oceanic and deepsea habitats. Developing this model can largely ensure the future integrity of this EMH hotspot while fostering cuttingedge science and technological development on megafauna behavior, biologging and increased ocean observation, with potential major impacts on the Blue Growth agenda. An action plan is proposed.

Abstract

The research deals with the historical-critical pedagogy, conceived by Saviani, from the 1980s, with the intention of incorporating advances and overcoming the limits verified in the context of previous pedagogies. The objective was to analyze the production disseminated by the journals Educação & Formação, Ensino em Perspectivas and Práticas Educativas, Memórias e Oralidade, linked to the Graduate Program of the State University of Ceará, to identify the thematic categories relevant to the use and appropriation of conceptions of Saviani on historical-critical pedagogy. A qualitative, state-of-the-art study was conducted, based on content analysis. From the full reading of the 13 selected products, four thematic categories emerged 1) the relationship between school and work; 2) teaching work; 3) teacher training; and 4) Public Educational Policies. It is concluded that the dialog with Saviani's conceptions underlies the debate of a multiplicity of themes in the educational field that encourages a counter-hegemonic teaching practice. Abstract

The possibility of diquat electrochemical detection, realized by conducting polymer electrode, doped by vanadium dioxide, was analyzed by theoretical point of view. It was shown, that the conducting polymer composite with VO2 may serve as an excellent electrode modifier for Diquat electrochemical detection. The steady-state may be maintained stable in the vast parameter region. Abstract

Fish telemetry studies give unique information about fish movements (migrations), but there are still several methodological constraints. A critical step is the choice of an appropriate tag and tagging method, essential to guaranteeing that the tagged fish is representative of the general wild population. The effects of two tagging methods with acoustic transmitters on the behavior, survival, condition, and growth of the European flounder Platichthys flesus (L.) were evaluated in tank experiments. Two 33-day assays were conducted: one with adult flounder to test intracoelomic (internal) and external tagging with Vemco V7-2 L dummy tags, and a second assay with juveniles using only external tags. Intracoelomic implantation resulted in very low survival rate (10%), fish lethargy, and a lack of response to food. External tagging did not affect behavior but had negative effects on the final condition of adult flounder, and on the specific growth rates (SGR) of smaller-sized fish. The external tagging method is the most appropriate for P. flesus because of the technique’s simplicity, expedience, and fewer negative effects upon the fish.

Abstract

Malcolm Roy Clarke (1930–2013) was a British teuthologist who made an important contribution to marine science in the Azores archipelago (Portugal). Malcolm started doing research in the Azores from 1980s onward, settling for residency in 2000 after retirement (in 1987). He kept publishing on Azorean cephalopods collaborating in 20% of the peer reviewed works focus- ing on two main areas: dietary studies; and the ecology of cephalopods on seamounts. Since his first visit in 1981, he was involved in the description of the dietary ecology of several cetaceans, seabirds, and large pelagic and deep-water fish. Using his own data, Malcolm revised the association of cephalopods with seamounts, updating and enlarging the different cephalopod groups according to species behaviour and ecology. Malcolm taught several students working in the Azores on cephalopods and beak identification, lecturing the Third International Workshop in Faial (2007). He empowered the recently established research community, by providing important contacts with foreign institutes and informal advice. He collaborated in the regional cetacean stranding network (RACA) and was an active member of the advisory board of the journal Arquipelago—Life and Marine Sciences . But the scientific role of Malcolm Clarke in the Azores went beyond his academic activities. In the last 10 years Malcolm and Dot Clarke dedicated themselves to building and running a museum on Pico Island, showing the biology of the sperm whale and its interaction with squid; a cultural and touristic legacy for future gen- erations to enjoy.

Abstract

During the treatment of dental caries that has not penetrated the tooth pulp, maintenance of as much unaffected dentine as possible is a major goal during the physical removal of decayed mineral. Damage to dentine leads to release of fossilized factors (transforming growth factor-β [TGF-β] and bone morphogenic protein [BMP]) in the dentine that are believed to stimulate odontoblasts to secrete new "tertiary" dentine (reactionary dentine). This is formed on the pulpal surface of existing dentine and rethickens the dentine. We have previously shown that activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling is pivotal for tooth repair in exposed pulp injury, and the pathway can be activated by small-molecule GSK-3 antagonists, resulting in enhanced reparative dentine formation. Here, we use a nonexposed pulp injury model to investigate the mechanisms of reactionary dentine formation in vivo, using small molecules to modulate the Wnt/β-catenin, TGF-β, and BMP pathways. We found that a local increase of Wnt activation at the injury site enhances reactionary dentine secretion. In addition, inhibition of TGF-β, BMP, or Wnt pathways does not impede reactionary dentine formation, although inhibition of TGF-β and/or BMP signaling does result in more disorganized, nontubular reactionary dentine. This suggests that Wnt/β-catenin signaling plays no major role in the formation of reactionary dentine, but in common with reparative dentine formation, exogenous elevation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling can enhance tertiary dentine formation. Release of latent TGF-β or BMPs from dentine is not required for the deposition of mineral to form reactionary dentine but does play a role in its organization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Searching for planets around stars with different masses probes the outcome of planetary formation for different initial conditions. The low-mass M dwarfs are also the most frequent stars in our Galaxy and potentially therefore, the most frequent planet hosts. This has motivated our search for planets around M dwarfs with HARPS. That observing program has now run for almost a decade and detected most of the known low-mass planets orbiting M dwarfs (m sin i < 20 M ⊕), including the least massive (GJ581e, m sin i = 1.9 M ⊕) and the first potentially habitable planets (GJ581c&d GJ667Cc, GJ163c). This proceeding shortly reviews the detections made with HARPS, reports on the occurrence of planets around M dwarfs and how they mesh up with planet formation theory. It also highlights our sensitivity to low-mass habitable planets, the first direct measure of ⊕ , and the recent detection of a transiting planet the size of Uranus.

Abstract

Background: This study was an investigation of the effects of ingesting a daily dose of isolated glycinin soy protein (11S globulin), in association with rosuvastatin, on the control of hypercholesterolemia in experimental animals. Methods: Male Wistar rats were kept in individual cages under appropriate controlled conditions of temperature, light and humidity. The animals were divided into five groups (n = 9): 1) standard (STD): fed on casein as protein source; 2) hypercholesterolemic (HC): STD plus 1% cholesterol and 0.5% cholic acid; 3) HC+11S: hypercholesterolemic + glycinin (300 mg/kg/day); 4) HC+ROS: hypercholesterolemic + rosuvastatin (10 mg/kg/day); 5) HC+11S+ROS: HC diet, the 11S protein and the drug in the doses given in (3) and (4). The protein and the drug were administered by gavage for 28 days. The results indicated that the addition of 1% cholesterol and 0.5% cholic acid induced hypercholesterolemia in the animals without interfering with their weight gain. Results: A single daily dose of glycinin contributed an additional 2.8% of dietary protein intake and demonstrated its functional role, particularly in raising HDL-C, decreasing triglycerides in the liver and improving the atherogenic index in animals exposed to a hypercholesterolemic diet. Conclusion: Most of the beneficial effects of the isolated treatments disappeared when the drug (rosuvastatin) and the protein (glycinin) were taken simultaneously. The association was shown not to interact additively, as noted in the plasma levels of total cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol, and in the significant increase of cholesterol in the liver. Studies are in progress to identify the effects of peptides derived from the 11S globulin and their role in cholesterol metabolism.

Abstract

We report on the detection of GJ 3634b, a super-Earth of mass and period P = 2.64561 ± 0.00066 day. Its host star is a M2.5 dwarf, has a mass of 0.45 ± 0.05 M⊙, a radius of 0.43 ± 0.03 R⊙ and lies 19.8 ± 0.6 pc away from our Sun. The planet is detected after a radial-velocity campaign using the ESO/Harps spectrograph. GJ 3634b had an a priori geometric probability to undergo transit of ~7% and, if telluric in composition, a non-grazing transit would produce a photometric dip of ≲0.1%. We therefore followed-up upon the RV detection with photometric observations using the 4.5-μm band of the IRAC imager onboard Spitzer. Our six-hour long light curve excludes that a transit occurs for 2σ of the probable transit window, decreasing the probability that GJ 3634b undergoes transit to ~0.5%.

Abstract

Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) prepared by catalytic chemical vapour deposition were functionalized in such a way that they were optimally designed as a nano-vector for the delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA), which is of great interest for biomedical research and drug development. DWNTs were initially oxidized and coated with a polypeptide (Poly(Lys:Phe)), which was then conjugated to thiol-modified siRNA using a heterobifunctional cross-linker. The obtained oxDWNT-siRNA was characterized by Raman spectroscopy inside and outside a biological environment (mammalian cells). Uptake of the custom-designed nanotubes was not associated with detectable biochemical perturbations in cultured cells, but transfection of cells with DWNTs loaded with siRNA targeting the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene, serving as a model system, as well as with therapeutic siRNA targeting the survivin gene, led to a significant gene silencing effect, and in the latter case a resulting apoptotic effect in cancer cells.

Os autores descrevem um caso de Síndrome de Rubinstein-Taybi em que as características faciais e os polegares alargados permitiram o diagnóstico na primeira semana de vida. Salientam na evolução as infecções respiratórias de repetição, o atraso psicomotor e estaturo ponderal. Discutem as prováveis formas de transmissão deste síndrome.

Abstract

A Diabetes Mellitus é uma doença crónica que frequentemente complica a gravidez. Por outro lado, as perturbações do metabolismo glucídico podem ser exageradas pela gravidez, com as suas alterações endócrino-metabólicas. A vigilância da grávida diabética é complexa e deve envolver uma equipa multidisciplinar. Com o objectivo de avaliar as repercussões da diabetes no prognóstico da gravidez e vice-versa, os autores efectuaram a casuística da Consulta de Diabetes da Maternidade Dr. Alfredo da Costa durante o ano de 1997. Das 138 doentes que recorreram à consulta, 108 apresentavam Diabetes Gestacional/Intolerância à glicose oral (DG/IGO) e 30 Diabetes prévia à gravidez. Apenas 2 destas últimas tiveram uma consulta pré-concepcional. Cerca de 44% das mulheres com DG/IGO necessitaram de insulina em algum momento da gestação. A doença hipertensiva constituiu a complicação obstétrica mais frequente. A taxa de cesarianas (49%) situou-se acima da mencionada por outros estudos. Não se registaram mortes fetais in útero e a morbi/mortalidade neonatal foi semelhante à referida por outros autores. O dado mais importante que interessa salientar deste estudo reside no trabalho desta equipa multidisciplinar, sem o qual não se teria conseguido uma diminuição da morbilidade materna e peri-natal.
