Membrane materials with osmium nanoparticles have been recently reported for bulk membranes and supported composite membrane systems. In the present paper, a catalytic material based on osmium dispersed in n–decanol (nD) or n–dodecanol (nDD) is presented, which also works as an emulsion membrane. The hydrogenation of p–nitrophenol (PNP) is carried out in a reaction and separation column in which an emulsion in the acid-receiving phase is dispersed in an osmium nanodispersion in n–alcohols. The variables of the PNP conversion process and p–aminophenol (PAP) transport are as follows: the nature of the membrane alcohol, the flow regime, the pH difference between the source and receiving phases and the number of operating cycles. The conversion results are in all cases better for nD than nDD. The counter-current flow regime is superior to the co-current flow. Increasing the pH difference between the source and receiving phases amplifies the process. The number of operating cycles is limited to five, after which the regeneration of the membrane dispersion is required. The apparent catalytic rate constant (kapp) of the new catalytic material based on the emulsion membrane with the nanodispersion of osmium nanoparticles (0.1 × 10−3 s−1 for n–dodecanol and 0.9 × 10−3 s−1 for n–decanol) is lower by an order of magnitude compared to those based on adsorption on catalysts from the platinum metal group. Background and Objectives: The treatment of advanced and metastatic lung cancer is multimodal, and it is coordinated by a multidisciplinary team. Anxiety and depression occur frequently in patients with lung cancer, creating considerable discomfort in therapeutic management. At the same time, these psychoemotional symptoms affect the patients' quality of life. Objective: This research seeks to identify correlations both between anxiety and depression and the patients' performance statuses, as well as between anxiety and depression and the type of treatment: radiotherapy, chemotherapy, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), immunotherapy and palliative care. Materials and Methods: The study evaluated 105 patients with lung cancer from two oncologic centers. Patients were assessed for anxiety and depression using the questionnaire Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The HADS is a self-report rating scale of 14 items. It measures anxiety and depression, and has two subscales. There are seven items for each subscale. There are 4-point Likert scale ranging from 0 to 3. For each subscale, the score is the sum of the seven items, ranging from 0 to 21. Results: The most powerful correlation with statistical significance was observed between the IT type of treatment (immunotherapy) and the normal level of anxiety, PC = 0.82 (p < 0.001) as well as the normal level of depression. Palliative treatment was correlated with anxiety and depression, both borderline and abnormal. For ECOG 3–4 performance status and abnormal anxiety, respectively, abnormal depression was significantly associated. Also, continuous hospitalization was associated with abnormal anxiety and depression. Conclusions: Early assessments of anxiety and depression are necessary in patients with advanced and metastatic lung cancer, with unfavorable performance status, who have been admitted to continuous hospitalization, and who require palliative care. Due to its valuable organic compounds, grape pomace represents a valuable resource in the creation of value-added food products. In this study, we investigated grape pomace hydroalcoholic extracts obtained by ultrasonication from two white and two red Romanian grape varieties. The phytochemical parameters, i.e., polyphenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, condensed tannins content, and antioxidant activity, were determined by UV-Vis spectrometry. The statistical analysis revealed that Tămâioasă Românească and Negru de Drăgășani, respectively, and Fetească Albă and Fetească Neagră are similar to each other. Significant differences among the pomaces obtained from different grape varieties were noticed in terms of their phenolic contents. The red varieties (Fetească Neagră and Negru de Drăgășani) were richest in terms of total phenolics and total anthocyanins, respectively. The antioxidant activity of extracts obtained from grape pomace showed that Negru de Drăgășani had the higher value due to its high amounts of polyphenols, followed by Fetească Neagră, Fetească Albă, and Tămâioasă Românească. Higher levels of bioactive polyphenolic substances, i.e., catechin, myricetin, resveratrol, and vanillic acid, were found in the pomace of Negru de Drăgășani extracts using high-performance liquid chromatography. In this analysis, we aimed to investigate the effect of COVID-19 disease on eating behavior. A total of 55 right-handed adults, <50 years of age, without overweight or obesity, from two cross-sectional studies were included. The first one enrolled subjects between September 2018 and December 2019 (non-COVID-19 group). The second one included subjects enrolled between March 2022 and May 2023; for this analysis, 28 with a history of COVID-19 (COVID-19 group) were retained. Hunger, TFEQ-18, plasma ghrelin, neuropeptide Y (NPY) and resting-state fMRI were assessed during fasting. Intraregional neuronal synchronicity and connectivity were assessed by voxel-based regional homogeneity (ReHo) and degree of centrality (DC). Significantly higher ghrelin and NPY levels were observed in the COVID-19 group than in the non-COVID-19 group (ghrelin 197.5 pg/mL vs. 67.1 pg/mL, p < 0.001; NPY 128.0 pg/mL vs. 84.5 pg/mL, p = 0.005). The NPY levels positively correlated with the DC and ReHo in the left lingual (r = 0.67785 and r = 0.73604, respectively). Similar scores were noted for cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating and emotional eating in both groups according to the TFEQ-18 questionnaire results (p > 0.05 for all). Our data showed increased levels of appetite-related hormones, correlated with activity in brain regions involved in appetite regulation, persisting long after COVID-19 infection. The Russian invasion of Ukraine contributed to soaring world market prices of many commodities with severe repercussions for many African countries. This study examines the implications of the 2022 world market price increases for wheat, fuels, and fertilizers for Ethiopia. Using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, the study shows negative impacts on GDP, wage rates, and households' consumption in the country. The effects of fertilizer and petroleum price changes are notable and unequal across production sectors. With increasing import prices of inorganic fertilizers, crop growing activities substitute inorganic fertilizers with animal manure reducing the use of manure as cooking fuel. The effects on urban households are more severe than the effects on rural households. Policies supporting biofuels and biogas digesters may dampen the adverse effects stemming from petroleum price surges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and brain metastatic disease have an unfavorable prognosis. The goal of the treatment in stage IV NSCLC is to increase the survival rate and to improve the quality of life. Case report: We present the case of a young male patient (47 years old at the time of diagnosis in 2021) with NSCLC stage IV with the onset of the disease through neurological symptoms determined by brain metastasis. The immunohistochemical result raised problems of differential diagnosis. The complete favorable response was obtained 20 months after the initiation of second-line immunotherapy, maintaining this response 6 months later. Discussion: The therapeutic approach for the second-line treatment of patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) without mutations has been revolutionized by the approval of immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). The combination of radiotherapy and immunotherapy can increase the abscopal phenomenon by the stimulation of an immune response against tumors at distant sites, outside the radiation field, as recent studies suggest. Conclusions: Second-line immunotherapy is beneficial to the survival of patients with NSCLC with disease progression beyond initial chemotherapy. BackgroundLittle is known about the natural growth characteristics of untreated glioblastoma before surgical or therapeutic intervention, because patients are rapidly treated after preliminary radiographic diagnosis. Understanding the growth characteristics of uninhibited human glioblastoma may be useful for characterizing changes in response to therapy. Thus, the objective of the current study was to explore tumor growth dynamics in a cohort of patients with untreated glioblastoma before surgical or therapeutic intervention.MethodsNinety-five patients with glioblastoma who had measurable enhancing disease on >2 magnetic resonance imaging scans before surgery were identified. Tumor growth rates were quantified in 4 different ways (the percentage change per day, the absolute rate of change per day, the estimated volumetric doubling time, and the radial expansion rate) using 3 different approaches (bidirectional product, enhancing disease, and total lesion volume).ResultsThe median volumetric doubling time was 21.1 days, the percentage change in tumor volume was 2.1% per day, and the rate of change in total lesion volume was 0.18 cc per day. Collagen is one of the predominant proteins found in all multicellular animals. In this paper, the performance of the ultrafiltration process (UF) for concentrating the collagen protein was studied by performing batch experiments using a membrane module with an effective area of 28 [cm.sup.2] and equipped with a regenerated cellulose membrane with a molecular weight cut-off of 5 kDa. The feed solution consisted of aqueous solutions of bovine collagen hydrolysate with a molecular weight of 10 kDa. The effects of feed concentration (1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%) on the performance were determined. The optimum operating conditions were: a transmembrane pressure of 5 bar and a temperature of 25[degrees]C. The results showed that the permeability decreases with the increase of the volumetric concentration factor (VCF) for all five concentrated solutions of collagen tested. Also, the rejection of proteins increases with the increase in the concentration of the collagen solutions. The study confirms that the clogging phenomenon was dependent on the increase of concentration. Further, a mathematical modeling of fouling mechanism was analyzed based on Hermia's model. The concentration of the collagen solutions was also highlighted by viscosity measurements. Research has been marked by the idea that dietary behavior (nutrition), alongside its specific existential roles (roles of growth and development, maturation, and survival), is significantly linked to other important dimensions of physical and mental life (locus of control, self-attitude, professional activity, physical and emotional regulation activities - such as engaging in physical activities and rest). Background and Objectives: The influence of montelukast (MK), an antagonist of cysLT1 leukotriene receptors, on lung lesions caused by experimental diabetes was studied. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on four groups of six adult male Wistar rats. Diabetes was produced by administration of streptozotocin 65 mg/kg ip. in a single dose. Before the administration of streptozotocin, after 72 h, and after 8 weeks, the serum values of glucose, SOD, MDA, and total antioxidant capacity (TAS) were determined. After 8 weeks, the animals were anesthetized and sacrificed, and the lungs were harvested and examined by optical microscopy. Pulmonary fibrosis, the extent of lung lesions, and the lung wet-weight/dry-weight ratio were evaluated. Results: The obtained results showed that MK significantly reduced pulmonary fibrosis (3.34 ± 0.41 in the STZ group vs. 1.73 ± 0.24 in the STZ+MK group p < 0.01) and lung lesion scores and also decreased the lung wet-weight/dry-weight (W/D) ratio. SOD and TAS values increased significantly when MK was administered to animals with diabetes (77.2 ± 11 U/mL in the STZ group vs. 95.7 ± 13.3 U/mL in the STZ+MK group, p < 0.05, and 25.52 ± 2.09 Trolox units in the STZ group vs. 33.29 ± 1.64 Trolox units in the STZ+MK group, respectively, p < 0.01), and MDA values decreased. MK administered alone did not significantly alter any of these parameters in normal animals. Conclusions: The obtained data showed that by blocking the action of peptide leukotrienes on cysLT1 receptors, montelukast significantly reduced the lung lesions caused by diabetes. The current paper presents the results of the experimental analysis to assess and optimize the twin-screw compressor's efficiency by varying the volume ratio. The experimental tests are conducted on the compressor's test bench, with a dedicated automation system inside the control console. The control and monitoring software allows parameter recording for subsequent visualization, data curation, and postprocessing. The evaluation of screw compressor's performance requires a simultaneous analysis of the thermodynamic and flow processes, both of which depend on the compressor's geometry.
