An inorganic-organic hybrid junction has been fabricated by spin coating the p-type poly(3- hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl)(P3HT) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) on an n-type GaN layer. The GaN layer was formed on Al2O3 by metal organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD) method. To investigate the effects of P3HT concentration on the electrical properties, we changed P3HT solution concentration and speed of spin coater. The currentvoltage (I-V ) characteristic of Au/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT/n-GaN shows rectifying behavior. The I-V characteristic was examined in the frame work of the thermionic emission model. The most proper rectifying behavior was obtained for 0.6 wt% and thickness below 65 nm of P3HT used diode. We expect that such hybrid structures, suitably developed, might be enable the fabrication of highquality electronic and optoelectronic devices.

In this paper, an enhanced-mode (E-mode) AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) was developed by using 4-inch GaN HEMT process. We designed and fabricated Emode HEMTs and characterized device performance. To estimate the possibility of application for millimeter wave applications, we focused on the high frequency performance and power characteristics. To shift the threshold voltage of HEMTs we applied the Al2O3 insulator to the gate structure and adopted the gate recess technique. To increase the frequency performance the e-beam lithography technique was used to define the 0.15 um gate length. To evaluate the dc and high frequency performance, electrical characterization was performed. The threshold voltage was measured to be positive value by linear extrapolation from the transfer curve. The device leakage current is comparable to that of the depletion mode device. The current gain cut-off frequency and the maximum oscillation frequency of the E-mode device with a total gate width of 150 um were 55 GHz and 168 GHz, respectively. To confirm the power performance for mm-wave applications the load-pull test was performed. The measured power density of 2.32 W/mm was achieved at frequencies of 28 and 30 GHz.

AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) are fabricated using a gate recess process and a surface treatment with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) prior to gate metal deposition. Electrical characterizations show improved extrinsic transconductance and saturation current, as well as more uniform off-state behavior with reduced off-current by a factor of 3.5 and gate leakage current by a factor of 4.2 in the devices with TMAH treatment. The analyses based on atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy show that the TMAH treatment effectively reduces the roughness of the recess-etched AlGaN surface and removes the native oxide layer on the AlGaN surface, suggesting a simple and viable route towards the fabrication of gate-recessed HEMTs based on AlGaN/GaN heterostructure with improved controllability and uniformity.

Background Based on the metabolic effect of exogenous ATPase inhibitory factor 1 (IF1) on glucose metabolism, we tested whether IF1 treatment is effective in ameliorating weight gain and whether its effects are sex specific. Methods HFD-fed C57BL/6 mice were treated with IF1 (5 mg/kg body weight, injected intraperitoneally). The underlying mechanisms of effect of IF1 on body weight were investigated in vitro and in vivo. Associations between genotypes of IF1 and obesity and relevant phenotype were further tested at the population level. Results Chronic treatment with IF1 significantly decreased body weight gain by regulating food intake of HFD-fed male mice. IF1 activated the AKT/mTORC pathway and modulated the expression of appetite genes in the hypothalamus of HFD-fed male mice and its effect was confirmed in hypothalamic cell lines as well as hypothalamic primary cells. This required the interaction of IF1 with β-F1-ATPase on the plasma membrane of hypothalamic cells, which led to an increase in extracellular ATP production. In addition, IF1 treatment showed sympathetic nerve activation as measured by serum norepinephrine levels and UCP-1 expression in the subcutaneous fat of HFD-fed male mice. Notably, administration of recombinant IF1 to HFD-fed ovariectomized female mice showed remarkable reductions in food intake as well as body weight, which was not observed in wild-type 5-week female mice. Lastly, sex-specific genotype associations of IF1 with obesity prevalence and metabolic traits were demonstrated at the population level in humans. IF1 genetic variant (rs3767303) was significantly associated with lower prevalence of obesity and lower levels of body mass index, waist circumference, hemoglobin A1c, and glucose response area only in male participants. Conclusion IF1 is involved in weight regulation by controlling food intake and potentially sympathetic nerve activation in a sex-specific manner.

The role of angiopoietin-like 3 (ANGPTL3) in blood lipid levels, cardiovascular disease risk, and glucose metabolism has received wide attention. This study aimed to examine whether rs11207997 in ANGPTL3 is associated with a 10-year risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) and if the association is modified by the consumption of certain food groups or nutrients. A prospective cohort study was designed using the Ansan–Ansung data of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (n = 7,358; age ≥40 years at baseline). Participants with the T allele of rs11207997, particularly TT homozygotes, had lower triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol levels than those with CC. There was no association with fasting blood glucose or other biochemical parameters. ANGPTL3 mRNA was positively associated with circulating TG levels and blood pressure (all p p = 0.046). Furthermore, the association between rs11207997 and the risk of DM was modified by dietary factors. These associations were no longer statistically significant when additionally adjusted for baseline TG, a potential mediator. Our data suggest that genetic variation of rs11207997 in the ANGPTL3 gene is associated with risk of DM, possibly through contributing to a lifelong set point of TG.

Semitransparent and bifacial photovoltaic (PV) technology has received considerable attention recently owing to its potential for energy-harvesting window applications. Ultrathin Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells with transparent conducting front and rear electrodes, which enable partial visible light transmission, are considered promising candidates for this purpose. However, to realize improved performance, a variety of challenges, including fabrication processes, material selection, and device structure design, remain to be addressed. Here, the material properties and performance characteristics of semitransparent ultrathin CIGS solar cells prepared on two types of transparent conducting oxide (TCO) rear contacts, namely, textured SnO2:F and flat In2O3:Sn films, using a single-stage co-evaporation method, are reported. Comparative performance evaluations of devices with the different TCO rear contacts reveal that the single-stage process is a very effective method for fabricating high-performance semitransparent CIGS solar devices, and that light management plays an important role in devices with ultrathin CIGS absorbers. A textured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer with light-scattering and antireflection properties enhances the light absorption properties of the devices. The device (absorber thickness: 322 nm) prepared on the flat In2O3:Sn rear contact with the textured PDMS layer exhibits superior performance as compared to other state-of-the-art solar devices, with a conversion efficiency of 10.5% and an average visible transmittance of 12.3%.

We report the bifacial photovoltaic performance of semitransparent ultrathin Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells with Sn-doped In2O3 front and F-doped SnO2 rear contacts prepared using a single-stage co-evaporation process under front- and rear-illumination conditions. The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the solar cells measured at 100 mW/cm2 increased with increasing ultrathin CIGS absorber thickness (200–400 nm), from 6.89 to 9.75% when front illuminated, and from 4.91 to 6.46% when rear illuminated, while the corresponding average visible transmission values (420–720 nm) gradually decreased from 18.53% to 5.06%. The bifacial photovoltaic performance of semitransparent solar cells with 200-nm- and 300-nm-thick CIGS absorber layers was also investigated under low-light conditions (100–10 mW/cm2). The PCE of the solar cell with a 300-nm-thick CIGS absorber layer remained almost constant with decreasing light intensity (100–10 mW/cm2), at ~8% (front illumination) and ~6% (rear illumination), while that of the solar cell with 200-nm-thick layer decreased from 6.84% to 3.43% (front illumination) and from 4.91% to 2.41% (rear illumination). The enhanced bifacial performance of the solar cell with the 300-nm-thick CIGS absorber layer is attributed to high shunt resistance in the solar cell owing to the improved microstructural qualities.

In this study, we investigated whether the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with telomere length (TL) were associated with the incidence of hypertension (HTN)/coronary heart disease (CHD) and cardiovascular risk factors in the Korean population. Data from 5,705 (ages 39-70) participants in the Korean Genome Epidemiology Study (rural Ansung and urban Ansan cohorts) were studied. Twelve SNPs known to be associated with telomere biology were tested for an association with HTN/CHD. As results, no significant associations were found between the selected TL-related SNPs and prevalence of HTN and CHD. Among non-alcohol users, subjects with minor alleles in rs1269304 and rs10936601 (TERC and LRRC34, respectively) exhibited a higher rate of CHD occurrence (odds ratio [OR], 1.862; 95% confidence intervals [CIs], 1.137, 3.049; OR, 1.855; 95% CIs, 1.111, 2.985; respectively). However, alcohol users with minor alleles in rs398652 (PELI2) were significantly associated with higher HTN prevalence (OR, 1.179; 95% CIs, 1.040, 1.336). Of the 3 SNPs related to disease outcomes, rs1296304 was significantly associated with increased levels of diastolic blood pressure (β estimate, 0.470; 95% CIs, 0.013, 0.926). The minor allele in rs398652 was significantly associated with higher levels of body mass index (OR, 0.128; 95% CIs, 0.010, 0.246) and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (OR, 0.013; 95% CIs, 0.001, 0.024). In conclusion, there were no significant associations between the selected TL-related SNPs and the occurrence of HTN/CHD in Koreans. However, the results suggest the presence of a possible interaction between related SNPs and alcohol behavior associated with HTN/CHD occurrence.

We report on crystallographic analyses of one-dimensional GaN nanoneedles grown on a n-GaN epilayer by using hydride vapor phase epitaxy. The nanoneedles were grown with a HCl:NH3 gas flow ratio of 1:38 at 600 °C. The growth time of the GaN nanoneedles affected their morphologies. As time progressed, GaN dots nucleated and then evolved as nanoneedles. The vertical growth rate of GaN nanoneedles was higher than the lateral growth rate under optimized growth conditions. X-ray pole figure measurements were carried out using a four-axis diffractometer. For the sample grown for 20 min, we obtained discrete patterns with six strong dots and weak dough-nut and cotton swab patterns, indicating that most of the nanoneedles were grown ideally, but partially, in the x-y plane with an azimuthal rotation angle ϕ = 15 ~ 45° rotated to the substrate, and a few GaN nanoneedles were tilted by ±4° or by more than 32° from the vertical c-axis.

Secondary lymphedema is a common irreversible side effect of breast cancer surgery. We investigated if risk of secondary lymphedema in breast cancer survivors was related to changes in serum phospholipid fatty acid composition. Study subjects were voluntarily recruited into the following three groups: breast cancer survivors who had sentinel lymph node biopsy without lymphedema (SLNB), those who had auxillary lymph node dissection without lymphedema (ALND), and those who had ALND with lymphedema (ALND + LE). Body mass index (BMI), serum lipid profiles, bioimpedance data with single-frequency bioimpedance analysis (SFBIA), and serum phospholipid compositions were analyzed and compared among the groups. BMI, serum total cholesterol (total-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and SFBIA ratios increased only in the ALND + LE. High polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and high C20:4 to C18:2 n-6 PUFAs (arachidonic acid [AA]/linoleic acid [LA]) was detected in the ALND and ALND + LE groups compared to SLNB. The ALND + LE group showed increased activity indices for delta 6 desaturase (D6D) and D5D and increased ratio of AA to eicosapentaenoic acid (AA/EPA) compared to the ALND and SLNB groups. Correlation and regression analysis indicated that D6D, D5D, and AA/EPA were associated with SFBIA ratios. We demonstrated that breast cancer survivors with lymphedema had elevated total PUFAs, fatty acid desaturase activity indices, and AA/EPA in serum phospholipids. Our findings suggested that desaturation extent of fatty acid composition might be related to the risk of secondary lymphedema in breast cancer survivors.

This study was designed with the goal of examining the effects of voglibose administration on body weight and lipid metabolism and underlying mechanism high fat diet-induced obese mice. Male C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to one of four groups: a control diet (CTL), high-fat diet (HF), high-fat diet supplemented with voglibose (VO), and high fat diet pair-fed group (PF). After 12 weeks, the following characteristics were investigated: serum lipid and glucose levels, serum polar metabolite profiles, and expression levels of genes involved in lipid and bile acid metabolism. In addition, pyrosequencing was used to analyze the composition of gut microbiota found in feces. Total body weight gain was significantly lower in the VO group than in the CTL, HF, and PF groups. The VO group exhibited improved metabolic profiles including those of blood glucose, triglyceride, and total cholesterol levels. The 12-week voglibose administration decreased the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes found in feces. Circulating levels of taurocholic and cholic acid were significantly higher in the VO group than in the HF and CTL groups. Deoxycholic acid levels tended to be higher in the VO group than in the HF group. Voglibose administration downregulated expression levels of CYP8B1 and HNF4α genes and upregulated those of PGC1α, whereas FXRα was not affected. Voglibose administration elicits changes in the composition of the intestinal microbiota and circulating metabolites, which ultimately has systemic effects on body weight and lipid metabolism in mice.

Background/objectives Dietary factors are important contributors to cardiometabolic and cancer mortality. We examined the secular trends of nine dietary factors (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, milk, red meat, processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and calcium) and the associated burdens of cardiometabolic and cancer mortality in Korea using representative cross-sectional survey data from 1998 to 2016. Subjects/methods Using dietary data from Korean adults aged ≥ 25 years in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), we characterized secular trends in intake levels. We performed comparative risk assessment to estimate the population attributable fraction and the number of cardiometabolic and cancer deaths attributable to each dietary factor. Results A total of 231,148 cardiometabolic and cancer deaths were attributable to nine dietary risk factors in Korea from 1998 to 2016. Suboptimal intakes of fruits and whole grains were the leading contributors. Although the intakes of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains moderately improved over time, the intake levels in 2016 (192.1 g/d, 225.6 g/d, and 10.9 g/d, respectively) remained far below the optimal levels. Deaths attributable to the low intakes of nuts and seeds (4.5 g/d), calcium (440.5 mg/d), and milk (37.1 g/d) and the high intakes of red meat (54.7 g/d), processed meat (4.7 g/d), and sugar-sweetened beverages (33.0 g/d) increased since 1998. Compared with older age groups (≥ 45 years), more unfavorable changes in dietary patterns were observed in the younger population aged 25-44 years, including more sharply increased intakes of processed meat. Conclusions We observed improvement in the intakes of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and unfavorable changes in the intakes of processed meat and sugar-sweetened beverages over the past few decades. Our data suggest that to reduce the chronic disease burden in Korea, more effective nutritional policies and interventions are needed to target these dietary risk factors.

Liquid crystal (LC)-polymer blends are important stimuli responsive materials already employed in a wide range of applications whereas nanoparticle (NP)-LC blends are an emerging class of nanocomposites. Polymer ligands offer the advantages of synthetic simplicity along with chemical and molecular weight tunability. Here we compare the phase behavior of 5CB blended with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and with gold NPs functionalized with thiolated PEO (AuNP-PEO) as a function of PEO concentration by DSC, POM and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Both PEO and the AuNP-PEO form uniform dispersions in isotropic 5CB and phase separate below the I-N phase transition temperature. Above the PEO crystallization temperature, the PEO/5CB blends show the expected biphasic state of PEO rich-isotropic liquid co-existing with PEO-poor nematic droplets. At PEO concentrations above 10 wt%, nematic 5CB nucleates with PEO crystallization. Both PEO and AuNP-PEO induce homeotropic alignment of the 5CB matrix immediately below TNI. The AuNP-PEO/5CB blends form thermally reversible cellular networks similar to AuNPs functionalized with low molecular weight mesogenic ligands. Apolipoprotein C3 (APOC3) is an important regulator of lipoprotein metabolism, and has been shown to be strongly associated with hypertriglyceridemia. We tested whether triglyceride-influencing genetic variants at APOC3 (T-455C, C-482T, C1100T, and SstI) are associated with the onset of hypertension (HTN) among Korean adults stratified by lifestyle-related factors in the Ansung&ndash, Ansan cohort within the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. After excluding participants with preexisting cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and HTN, a total of 5239 men and women were included at baseline (2001&ndash, 2002), and followed up for a median of 9.8 years. Carriers of the C allele of C1100T with body mass index &lt, 25 kg/m2 showed a significantly lower HTN risk (hazard ratio (HR) than non-carriers: 0.87, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.77&ndash, 0.98) after adjusting for covariates. In addition, carriers of the C allele of T-455C and the T allele of C-482T with low physical activity had lower incident HTN than non-carriers (HR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.03&ndash, 1.26, HR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.02&ndash, 1.25). Our results suggest that genotype effects in APOC3 on HTN risk have been shown in lean carriers of the C allele of C1100T and in less active people having the C allele of T-455C and T allele of C-482T in a large sample of the Korean population.

The association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the vitamin D metabolic pathway and lung function is unknown. We examined the association between five SNPs on DHCR7, GC, CYP2R1, and CYP24A1 along with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and lung function in older Korean men (n = 758) and women (n = 837). Lung function was determined by forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) from the data in the Korea Nutrition and Health Examination Survey 2011&ndash, 2012. Genetic risk score (GRS) was calculated by the number of 25(OH)D-decreasing alleles of the five SNPs. Our results showed that increases in GRS were associated with reduced 25(OH)D levels (p &lt, 0.05 for both sexes). In the entire population, FVC and FEV1 were associated with both GRS and 25(OH)D levels. In women, FVC and FEV1 were negatively associated with GRS (&beta, coefficient (95% CI): &minus, 0.022 (&minus, 0.039, &minus, 0.005) and &minus, 0.020 (&minus, 0.035, &minus, 0.005), respectively, both p &lt, 0.05), but not with 25(OH)D. However, in men, FVC and FEV1 were positively associated with 25(OH)D (&beta, coefficient (95% CI): 0.008 (0.001, 0.016) and 0.008 (0.002, 0.015), respectively, 0.05), but not with GRS. In conclusion, lung function was associated with genetic variation in Korean women and with 25(OH)D in Korean men.

Meteorin-like (metrnl) is a recently identified adipomyokine that has beneficial effects on glucose metabolism. However, its underlying mechanism of action is not completely understood. In this study, we have shown that a level of metrnl increase in vitro under electrical-pulse-stimulation (EPS) and in vivo in exercise mice, suggesting that metrnl is an exercise-induced myokine. In addition, metrnl increases glucose uptake through the calcium-dependent AMPK pathway. Metrnl also increases the phosphorylation of HDAC5, a transcriptional repressor of GLUT4, in an AMPK-dependent manner. Phosphorylated HDAC5 interacts with 14-3-3 proteins and sequesters them in the cytoplasm, resulting in the activation of GLUT4 transcription. The intraperitoneal injection of recombinant metrnl improves glucose tolerance in mice with high fat-induced obesity or type 2 diabetes (db/db), but this is not seen in AMPK β1β2 muscle-specific null mice (AMPK β1β2 MKO). In conclusion, we have demonstrated that metrnl induces beneficial effects on glucose metabolism via AMPK and is a promising therapeutic candidate for glucose-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

Objective- Stroke is a heterogeneous disease with diverse causes, which affect the risk of recurrence. This study aimed to identify novel biomarkers that are clinically relevant to the diagnosis of cardioembolic stroke (CE) and the prediction of stroke recurrence using metabolomics. Approach and Results- We obtained blood samples and clinical data from a consecutively registered, hospital-based acute stroke registry and from healthy controls. Mass-spectrometry-based profiling was performed, and several metabolomic signatures were selected for the discrimination of CE and stroke recurrence, coupled with multivariate statistical analysis. Finally, 190 acute ischemic stroke participants (43 CE patients and 147 non-CE patients) and 30 control participants were included. We obtained 29 metabolomics signatures, and of these, 2 medium-chain acylcarnitines (decanoylcarnitine and octanoylcarnitine) were selected as independent discriminants for CE (odds ratio, 2.839; 95% CI, 1.241-6.493 for decanoylcarnitine; odds ratio, 2.839; 95% CI, 1.241-6.493 for octanoylcarnitine). Elevated medium-chain acylcarnitines were also associated with a higher risk of stroke recurrence (hazard ratio, 3.767; 95% CI, 1.276-11.117 for decanoylcarnitine; hazard ratio, 5.519; 95% CI, 1.22-18.781 for octanoylcarnitine). The levels of decanoylcarnitine and octanoylcarnitine were correlated as known surrogate markers of CE. The levels of decanoylcarnitine and octanoylcarnitine were significantly higher in stroke patients with a high-risk potential of cardioembolism than in those with low or intermediate risk. Conclusions- Metabolomics provided an improved understanding of CE pathogenesis and stroke recurrence. We have identified decanoylcarnitine and octanoylcarnitine as novel biomarkers for CE and stroke recurrence.

One of the alluring aspects of liquid crystals (LCs) is their readily controllable self-assembly behavior, leading to comprehension of complex topological structures and practical patterning applications. Here, we report on manipulating various kinds of topological defects by adopting an imprinted polymer-based soft microchannel that simultaneously imposes adjustable surface anchoring, confinement, and uniaxial alignment. Distinctive molecular orientation could be achieved by varying the surface anchoring conditions at the sidewall polymer and the rubbing directions on the bottom layer. On this pioneering platform, a common LC material, 8CB (4'-n-octyl-4-cyano-biphenyl), was placed where various topological defect domains were generated in a periodic arrangement. The experimental results showed that our platform can change the packing behavior and even the shape of topological defects by varying the rubbing condition. We believe that this facile tool to modulate surface boundary conditions combined with topographic confinement can open a way to use LC materials in potential optical and patterning applications.

Previous studies have indicated an association of higher alcohol intake with cardiovascular disease and related traits, but causation has not been definitively established. In this study, the causal effect of alcohol intake on hypertension in 2,011 men and women from the Ansan-Ansung cohort was estimated using an instrumental variable (IV) approach, with both a phenotypic and genotypic instrument for alcohol intake: alcohol flushing and the rs671 genotype (in the alcohol dehydrogenase 2 [ALDH2] gene), respectively. Both alcohol flushing and the rs671 genotype were associated with alcohol intake (difference in alcohol intake with alcohol flushers vs. non-flushers: −9.07 g/day; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −11.12, −7.02; P-value: 8.3 × 10−18 and with the rs671 GA + AA vs. GG genotype: −7.94 g/day; 95% CI: −10.20, −5.69; P-value: 6.1 × 10−12). An increase in alcohol intake, as predicted by both the absence of alcohol flushing and the presence of the rs671 GG genotype in the IV analyses, was associated with an increase in blood pressure in men from this Korean population. In conclusion, this study supports a causal effect of alcohol intake on hypertension and indicated that alcohol flushing may be a valid proxy for the ALDH2 rs671 polymorphism, which influences alcohol intake in this Korean population.

This systematic analysis evaluates the cancer burden over time at the global and national levels measured in incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-adjusted life-years., Key Points Question What is the cancer burden over time at the global and national levels measured in incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs)? Findings In this systematic analysis, in 2016 there were 17.2 million incident cancer cases, 8.9 million deaths, and 213.2 million DALYs due to cancer worldwide. Between 2006 and 2016, incident cases increased by 28%, with the largest increase occurring in the least developed countries. Meaning To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals as well as targets set in the World Health Organization Global Action Plan on noncommunicable diseases, cancer control planning and implementation as well as strategic investments are urgently needed., Importance The increasing burden due to cancer and other noncommunicable diseases poses a threat to human development, which has resulted in global political commitments reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan on Non-Communicable Diseases. To determine if these commitments have resulted in improved cancer control, quantitative assessments of the cancer burden are required. Objective To assess the burden for 29 cancer groups over time to provide a framework for policy discussion, resource allocation, and research focus. Evidence Review Cancer incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were evaluated for 195 countries and territories by age and sex using the Global Burden of Disease study estimation methods. Levels and trends were analyzed over time, as well as by the Sociodemographic Index (SDI). Changes in incident cases were categorized by changes due to epidemiological vs demographic transition. Findings In 2016, there were 17.2 million cancer cases worldwide and 8.9 million deaths. Cancer cases increased by 28% between 2006 and 2016. The smallest increase was seen in high SDI countries. Globally, population aging contributed 17%; population growth, 12%; and changes in age-specific rates, −1% to this change. The most common incident cancer globally for men was prostate cancer (1.4 million cases). The leading cause of cancer deaths and DALYs was tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer (1.2 million deaths and 25.4 million DALYs). For women, the most common incident cancer and the leading cause of cancer deaths and DALYs was breast cancer (1.7 million incident cases, 535 000 deaths, and 14.9 million DALYs). In 2016, cancer caused 213.2 million DALYs globally for both sexes combined. Between 2006 and 2016, the average annual age-standardized incidence rates for all cancers combined increased in 130 of 195 countries or territories, and the average annual age-standardized death rates decreased within that timeframe in 143 of 195 countries or territories. Conclusions and Relevance Large disparities exist between countries in cancer incidence, deaths, and associated disability. Scaling up cancer prevention and ensuring universal access to cancer care are required for health equity and to fulfill the global commitments for noncommunicable disease and cancer control.

Objectives Counts of missing teeth or measures of incident tooth loss are gaining attention as a simple way to measure dental status in large population studies. We explore the meaning of these metrics and how missing teeth might influence other measures of dental status. Methods An observational study was performed in 2 contrasting adult populations. In total, 62 522 adult participants were available with clinically assessed caries and periodontal indices from the Swedish arm of the Gene‐Lifestyle Interactions and Dental Endpoints Study (GLIDE) and the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) in the Republic of Korea. Longitudinal measures of tooth loss were available for 28 244 participants in GLIDE with median follow‐up of 10.6 years. Results In longitudinal analysis, hazard for tooth loss was associated with baseline dental status (previous tooth loss, periodontal status and caries status) and socio‐demographic variables (age, smoking status and highest educational level). Analysis of cross‐sectional data suggested that indices of caries exposure were not independent of periodontal status. The strength and direction of association varied between groups, even for measures specifically intended to avoid measuring tooth loss. Individuals with impaired periodontal health (community periodontal index [CPI] 3 or higher in any sextant) had higher standardized decayed and filled surfaces (DFS; number of DFS divided by total number of tooth surfaces) in GLIDE (incidence risk ratio [IRR] 1.05 [95% CI: 1.04, 1.07], but lower standardized DFS in KNHANES (IRR: 0.95 [0.92, 0.98]) than individuals with better periodontal health (CPI

We produced controlled heliconical structures of a twist-bend nematic (NTB) liquid-crystal (LC) phase in nanoconfinement in a porous anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) film. The structural parameters of the NTB phase such as conical angle and helical pitch can be modulated by varying the surface energy of the inner surface of the porous AAO film, done by using different self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The LC molecules tend to be more freely packed, thus forming a larger conical angle, when placed on the tri-deca-fluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrooctyl-trichlorosilane (FOTS)-treated substrate, which has a relatively low surface energy. In contrast, the molecules form a more tightly packed structure, and thus a smaller conical angle, when placed on the 2-(methoxy(polyethyleneoxy)-propyl)trimethoxysilane (PEG 6/9)-treated substrate, which has higher surface energy. This work improves our collective understanding of self-assembled heliconical structures in the NTB phase.

A hybrid device that combines the properties of organic and inorganic semiconductors was fabricated and studied. It incorporated poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)- 1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as organic polymers and GaN nanoneedles as an inorganic semiconductor. Layers of the two polymers were spin coated on to the GaN nanoneedles. The one peak in the electroluminescence spectrum originated from the MEH-PPV layer owing to the different potential barriers of electrons and holes at its interface with the GaN nanoneedles. However, the photoluminescence spectrum showed peaks due to both GaN nanoneedles and MEH-PPV. Such hybrid structures, suitably developed, might be able to improve the efficiency of optoelectronic devices.

The present study was aim to evaluate the association between very long chain saturated fatty acids (VLSFAs) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean population. The study population were recruited from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VI (2013). Using the cross-sectional study design, socio-demographic factors, medical history, and clinical measurements were investigated according to quartiles of VLSFAs intake. The associations between each and sum of VLSFAs intake and MetS were assessed by logistic regression. The result indicated that higher intake of VLSFAs was significantly associated with favorable metabolic status, including lower levels of circulating triglyceride (TG) (p < 0.05). Additionally, subjects with higher intake of arachidic acid and total VLSFAs were negatively associated with MetS risk compared to subjects with lower intake of those fatty acids (p < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary VLSFAs intake was associated with metabolic risk factors and lower risk of MetS in Korean population.

Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is known to contribute to morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases. However, there exists limited information regarding its effect on psychological health. The aim of this study was to evaluate association of SO with several indices of psychological health and quality of life (QoL) in Korean adults. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 11521 participants older than 20 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008-2011. Sarcopenic obesity was defined by a low appendicular skeletal muscle mass divided by body weight less than 1 standard deviation below the sex-specific mean for the young reference group, and by a high waist circumference of at least 90 cm for men and at least 85 cm for women. Psychological health status, including depressive symptoms, perceived stress, and suicidal ideation, as well as QoL, was assessed by a self-reporting questionnaire. Association between SO and psychological health status was assessed under a logistic regression model. After multivariate adjustment for demographics and lifestyle factors, SO was significantly associated with perceived stress (odds ratio, 1.24; 95% confidence interval, 1.07-1.44; P value = .004) and suicidal ideation (odds ratio, 1.26; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-1.50; P value = .010). In addition, SO was found to have a negative association with a range of QoL indicators. Interestingly, these association patterns were more significant in participants younger than 60 years. In conclusion, our results suggest that SO was associated with adverse psychological health and lower QoL more than body mass index-based general obesity.

Cerebral small vessel diseases (SVDs) are related to stroke or cognitive dysfunction. n-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) represent possible disease-modifying factors for cardiovascular disease or dementia. Our hypothesis was that a low proportion of plasma FAs would be associated with cerebral SVDs. We prospectively enrolled 220 patients with a first-episode cerebral infarction within 7 days after symptom onset. The composition of plasma FAs was analyzed by gas chromatography methods. The presence and burden of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), high-grade white matter changes (HWCs), high-grade perivascular spaces (HPVSs), and asymptomatic lacunar infarctions (ALIs) were investigated. The mean proportion (± SD) was 2.0 ± 0.7 for EPA, 8.9 ± 1.5 for DHA, and 12.0 ± 2.1 for ∑ n-3-PUFAs. In total, 46 (20.9%) patients had CMBs, 64 (29.1 %) had HWCs, 57 (25.9%) had HPVSs, and 65 (29.5%) had ALIs. In univariate analyses, CMBs, HWCs, and HPVSs were each negatively correlated with the proportion of EPA, DHA, and ∑ n-3-PUFAs. In the multivariate analysis, a lower proportion of EPA, DHA and ∑ n-3-PUFAs was associated with the presence of CMBs, HWCs and HPVS, but not ALIs. Total SVDs score was inversely correlated with the proportion of EPA, DHA and ∑ n-3-PUFAs. Overall, we found an association between low proportions of plasma n-3-PUFAs and cerebral SVDs pathologies. Further studies are needed to explore the association and potential therapeutic role of FAs in cerebral SVDs.

Obesity is a serious health problem which may continuously increase the morbidity and mortality associated with a variety of acute and chronic diseases.This study aimed to examine the antiobesity effect of soy bean extract fermented by Bacillus subtilis MORI (BTD-1) and to elucidate the mechanisms underlying such effects using 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Lipid accumulations were significantly inhibited by BTD-1 treatment, which were accompanied by the decreased expression of CCAAT element binding protein α (C/EBPα) and the increased phosphorylation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) protein expression. In addition, BTD-1 treatment increased the expression of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) along with significantly increasing glucose uptake into the adipocytes based on results of a 2-deoxy-D-[3H] glucose uptake assay. Our findings suggest that BTD-1 may suppress the differentiation of 3T3-L1 adipocytes and greatly facilitate glucose uptake into the adipocytes. Therefore, BTD-1 has a potential as a functional food ingredient in improving obesity and related metabolic disorders.

Gallium nitride (GaN) nanoneedles were synthesized by using the hydride vapor phase epitaxy method at various growth temperatures and times under a HCl:NH3 flow ratio of 1:38. The morphology of GaN nanostructures varied according to the growth temperatures, and nanoneedles were formed at 640°C temperature zone. Further, their heights and diameters increased with increasing growth time whereas the stems of the nanoneedles coalesced. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the GaN nanoneedles were orientated along the [0001] direction and underwent biaxial compressive stress. Also, the Raman spectra exhibited the smallest compressive strain in the sample grown for 60 min compared to the other samples.

Early menarche is known to be associated with diabetes, however this association remains controversial. Our study aimed to investigate the possible association between age at menarche and diabetes prevalence in post-menopausal Korean women. This study included 3,254 post-menopausal Korean women aged 50-85 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV (KNHANES 2007-2009). Background Improving survival and extending the longevity of life for all populations requires timely, robust evidence on local mortality levels and trends. The Global Burden of Disease 2015 Study (GBD 2015) provides a comprehensive assessment of all-cause and cause-specific mortality for 249 causes in 195 countries and territories from 1980 to 2015. These results informed an in-depth investigation of observed and expected mortality patterns based on sociodemographic measures. Methods We estimated all-cause mortality by age, sex, geography, and year using an improved analytical approach originally developed for GBD 2013 and GBD 2010. Improvements included refinements to the estimation of child and adult mortality and corresponding uncertainty, parameter selection for under-5 mortality synthesis by spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression, and sibling history data processing. We also expanded the database of vital registration, survey, and census data to 14 294 geography-year datapoints. For GBD 2015, eight causes, including Ebola virus disease, were added to the previous GBD cause list for mortality. We used six modelling approaches to assess cause-specific mortality, with the Cause of Death Ensemble Model (CODEm) generating estimates for most causes. We used a series of novel analyses to systematically quantify the drivers of trends in mortality across geographies. First, we assessed observed and expected levels and trends of cause-specific mortality as they relate to the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a summary indicator derived from measures of income per capita, educational attainment, and fertility. Second, we examined factors affecting total mortality patterns through a series of counterfactual scenarios, testing the magnitude by which population growth, population age structures, and epidemiological changes contributed to shifts in mortality. Finally, we attributed changes in life expectancy to changes in cause of death. We documented each step of the GBD 2015 estimation processes, as well as data sources, in accordance with Guidelines for Accurate and Transparent Health Estimates Reporting (GATHER). Findings Globally, life expectancy from birth increased from 61.7 years (95% uncertainty interval 61.4-61.9) in 1980 to 71.8 years (71.5-72.2) in 2015. Several countries in sub-Saharan Africa had very large gains in life expectancy from 2005 to 2015, rebounding from an era of exceedingly high loss of life due to HIV/AIDS. At the same time, many geographies saw life expectancy stagnate or decline, particularly for men and in countries with rising mortality from war or interpersonal violence. From 2005 to 2015, male life expectancy in Syria dropped by 11.3 years (3.7-17.4), to 62.6 years (56.5-70.2). Total deaths increased by 4.1% (2.6-5.6) from 2005 to 2015, rising to 55.8 million (54.9 million to 56.6 million) in 2015, but age-standardised death rates fell by 17.0% (15.8-18.1) during this time, underscoring changes in population growth and shifts in global age structures. The result was similar for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), with total deaths from these causes increasing by 14.1% (12.6-16.0) to 39.8 million (39.2 million to 40.5 million) in 2015, whereas age-standardised rates decreased by 13.1% (11.9-14.3). Globally, this mortality pattern emerged for several NCDs, including several types of cancer, ischaemic heart disease, cirrhosis, and Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. By contrast, both total deaths and age-standardised death rates due to communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional conditions significantly declined from 2005 to 2015, gains largely attributable to decreases in mortality rates due to HIV/AIDS (42.1%, 39.1-44.6), malaria (43.1%, 34.7-51.8), neonatal preterm birth complications (29.8%, 24.8-34.9), and maternal disorders (29.1%, 19.3-37.1). Progress was slower for several causes, such as lower respiratory infections and nutritional deficiencies, whereas deaths increased for others, including dengue and drug use disorders. Age-standardised death rates due to injuries significantly declined from 2005 to 2015, yet interpersonal violence and war claimed increasingly more lives in some regions, particularly in the Middle East. In 2015, rotaviral enteritis (rotavirus) was the leading cause of under-5 deaths due to diarrhoea (146 000 deaths, 118 000-183 000) and pneumococcal pneumonia was the leading cause of under-5 deaths due to lower respiratory infections (393 000 deaths, 228 000-532 000), although pathogen-specific mortality varied by region. Globally, the effects of population growth, ageing, and changes in age-standardised death rates substantially differed by cause. Our analyses on the expected associations between cause-specific mortality and SDI show the regular shifts in cause of death composition and population age structure with rising SDI. Country patterns of premature mortality (measured as years of life lost [YLLs]) and how they differ from the level expected on the basis of SDI alone revealed distinct but highly heterogeneous patterns by region and country or territory. Ischaemic heart disease, stroke, and diabetes were among the leading causes of YLLs in most regions, but in many cases, intraregional results sharply diverged for ratios of observed and expected YLLs based on SDI. Communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases caused the most YLLs throughout sub-Saharan Africa, with observed YLLs far exceeding expected YLLs for countries in which malaria or HIV/AIDS remained the leading causes of early death. Interpretation At the global scale, age-specific mortality has steadily improved over the past 35 years; this pattern of general progress continued in the past decade. Progress has been faster in most countries than expected on the basis of development measured by the SDI. Against this background of progress, some countries have seen falls in life expectancy, and age-standardised death rates for some causes are increasing. Despite progress in reducing age-standardised death rates, population growth and ageing mean that the number of deaths from most non-communicable causes are increasing in most countries, putting increased demands on health systems. Upregulated arginase activity, which competes with nitric oxide synthase (NOS), impairs nitric oxide production and has been implicated in various metabolic disorders. This study examined whether circulating amino acid metabolite ratios are associated with arginase and NOS activities and whether arginine bioavailability is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Data related to arginase and NOS activities were collected from non-diabetic Koreans without cardiovascular disease (n = 1998) in the Ansan–Ansung cohorts (2005–2006). Subsequently, correlation and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. With the increase in the number of MetS risk factors, ratios of circulating amino acid metabolites, such as those of ornithine/citrulline, proline/citrulline, and ornithine/arginine, also significantly increased, whereas arginine bioavailability significantly decreased. These metabolite ratios and arginase bioavailability were also significantly correlated with MetS risk-related parameters, which remained significant after adjusting for covariates. In addition, logistic regression analysis revealed that high ratios of circulating metabolites and low arginine bioavailability, which indicated increased arginase activity, were significantly associated with a high MetS risk. This study demonstrated that altered ratios of circulating amino acid metabolites indicates increased arginase activity and decreased arginine bioavailability, both of which can be potential markers for MetS risk.

Epidemiological information on the association between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption and the risk for hypertension (HTN) in Koreans is very limited. We tested the hypothesis that increased SSB consumption is related to a higher risk of HTN among middle-aged Korean adults in a Korean community-based cohort. From participants of the cohort from 2001 to 2010, we selected 5775 subjects without HTN, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer and who had no information on dietary assessment at baseline. To assess the relationship between SSB consumption and HTN, we estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals using Cox regression analysis. In addition, stratified analysis by body mass index (BMI) was conducted. During the follow-up, we identified 1175 cases of incident HTN. The adjusted HR of HTN for the highest quartile of SSB consumption was 1.21 compared to the lowest quartile. Furthermore, higher consumption of SSB was significantly associated with increased incidence of HTN in subjects with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, whereas there was no significant association among subjects with BMI

Purpose: In line with epidemiological and sociocultural changes in Korea over the past decades, reliable estimation of diseases as a result of dietary and metabolic risks is required. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the contributions of dietary and metabolic factors to cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) in Korean adults (25–64 years old) during 2012–2013. Materials and Methods: Distribution of risk factors and cause-specific mortality by gender and age per year was obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and Statistics Korea, respectively. The association between the two was obtained from published meta-analyses. The population-attributable fraction attributable to the risk factors was calculated across gender and age strata (male and female, age groups 25–34, 35–44, 45–54, and 55–64) in 2012 and 2013. Results: The results showed that during the period studied, high body mass index [5628 deaths; uncertainty intervals (UIs): 5473– 5781] and blood pressure (4202 deaths; UIs: 3992–4410) were major metabolic risks for CMD deaths, followed by dietary risks such as low intake of whole grain (4107 deaths; UIs: 3275–4870) and fruits (3886 deaths; UIs: 3227–4508), as well as high intake of sodium (2911 deaths, UIs: 2406–3425). Also, males and the younger population were seen more prone to be exposed to harmful dietary risk than their female and older counterparts. Conclusion: The findings provide the necessary information to develop targeted government interventions to improve cardiometabolic health at the population level.

Meat consumption has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in Western societies; however, epidemiological data are limited on the Korean population. Therefore, we examined the associations between unprocessed meat consumption and CVD incidence in Korea. Data were derived from the Ansung-Ansan cohort (2001–2012), including 9370 adults (40–69 years) without CVD or cancer at baseline. Total unprocessed meat consumption was estimated as the sum of unprocessed red meat (beef, pork, and organ meat) and poultry consumption. In the fully adjusted Cox regression model, the relative risks of CVD across increasing quintiles of total unprocessed meat intake were 1.0 (reference), 0.72 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.55, 0.95), 0.57 (95% CI: 0.42, 0.78), 0.69 (95% CI: 0.51, 0.95), and 0.69 (95% CI: 0.48, 0.97), but no significant linear trend was detected (p for trend = 0.14). Frequent poultry consumption was significantly associated with a decreased CVD risk; this association showed a dose-response relationship (p for trend = 0.04). This study showed that a moderate intake of total unprocessed meat was inversely associated with CVD risk. A significant inverse association between poultry consumption and incident CVD was observed in Korean adults, requiring further confirmation in other populations.

Alcohol consumption is a serious health issue in Korea in terms of the amount consumed and the behavior related to its consumption. Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) is a key enzyme in alcohol metabolism that degrades acetaldehyde to nontoxic acetic acid. The enzyme is coded by the ALDH2 gene, which is commonly polymorphic in East Asian populations. A point mutation in the ALDH2 gene (the rs671 allele) yields an inactive form of ALDH2 that causes acetaldehyde accumulation in the body after alcohol consumption, thereby inhibiting normal alcohol metabolism. Individuals who are homozygous for polymorphism in ALDH2 tend to refrain from drinking alcohol, decreasing their chances of developing alcoholism and exposure to the associated risks. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have demonstrated that alcohol consumption predicted by ALDH2 genotype is causally related to cardiovascular risks. Moreover, recent MR studies suggest that the ALDH2 variant has mechanistic effects on some disease outcomes or mortality through increased blood levels of acetaldehyde, showing differences therein between heterozygotes (ALDH2*2*2) and homozygotes (ALDH2*1*2) in those who consume alcohol. Accordingly, consideration of ALDH2 genotype in alcohol prevention programs is warranted. In conclusion, strategies that incorporate genetic information and provide an evidential basis from which to help people make informed decisions on alcohol consumption are urgently required.

Introduction: Several previous studies have reported that consumption of soft drink is associated with increased risk of hypertension (HTN) in Western societies. However, epidemiological information on such associations is very limited in Koreans. Hypothesis: We tested the hypothesis whether an increase in soft drink consumption is related to higher risk of HTN among Korean middle aged adults from Korean community based Cohort (Ansan-Ansung cohort). Methods: Data from Ansan-Ansung cohort from 2001 to 2010 in the Korean genome and epidemiology study (KoGES) were used for statistical analyses. Among the participants, we selected 5,296 subjects (2,475 men and 2,821 women, aged 39-64 yrs) who were free from presence of HTN, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer at baseline and those who completely followed up for 10.4 years. Participants who completed a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire for dietary assessment and questionnaire for baseline health status in 2001-2002 were included in analyses. Subjects were categorized as quartile based on their soft drink consumption. Soft drink consumption was calculated as frequency per week summed up by consumption frequency of soda (such as Coke and Sprite) and other beverages (including sweet rice drink and Citrus tea). To assess the relationship between soft drink consumption and HTN, we estimated multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using cox regression analysis. In addition, stratified analysis by body mass index (BMI) was conducted. Results: During the follow-up period of 10.4 years, we ascertained 1,035 incident cases (19.5% of study population) of HTN. Total soft drink consumption showed significant association with increased risk for HTN after adjusting for potential confounders (age, sex, total energy intake, BMI, and socio-economic factors). The adjusted HR of HTN for the highest quartile of soft drink consumption was 1.24 (95% CIs: 1.02-1.51) compared to the lowest quartile. Furthermore, we found that higher consumption of soft drink was significantly associated with increased incidence of HTN in subjects with BMI ≥25 (HR: 1.54; 95% CIs: 1.15-2.01), whereas there was no significant association among subjects with BMI Conclusions: In conclusion, this study suggested that soft drink consumption contributes to increased risk of HTN, being prominent in obese participants. Our results support recommendations to reduce the consumption of soft drink to prevent and control HTN, although further large prospective studies or randomized controlled trials are warranted to confirm the observed association.

Introduction: Cumulative evidence has shown that total meat consumption is associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Western societies. However, epidemiological information is limited regarding such associations in the Korean population whose consumption level of meat is much lower than the global average. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that higher intake levels of unprocessed total meat would not increase the overall risk of CVD incidence, and healthier alternatives to red meat (such as poultry) would have protective effects in middle-aged Korean population. Methods: Ansung-Anasan cohort 2001-12 analyses were conducted from 2001 to 2012 among 9,370 adults, aged 40-69 years, without CVD or cancer at baseline, from two communities, Ansan (urban) and Ansung (rural). Dietary information was ascertained at baseline and at the second follow-up visit. Total meat consumption was estimated as the sum of unprocessed red meat (sum of beef, pork, and organ meat) and chicken consumption. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: During a median follow-up of 7.8 years, 486 incident CVD cases were identified. In the fully adjusted Cox regression model, relative risks of CVD across increasing quintiles of total meat intake were 1.0 (reference), 0.72 (95% CI 0.55-0.95), 0.57 (95% CI 0.42-0.78), 0.69 (95% CI 0.51-0.95), and 0.69 (95% CI 0.48-0.97). Regarding specific types of meat, frequent chicken consumption was significantly associated with decreased risks of CVD, showing participants in the highest quintile of chicken intake were 1.5 times less likely to develop CVD than those in the lowest quintile (95% CI: 0.47-0.99), and this association showed a dose-response relationship for all statistical models ( P for trend Conclusion: Higher intakes of unprocessed total and red meat showed inverse associations with incident CVD in a large, prospective, population-based cohort study of middle-aged Koreans. These findings require further confirmation from other populations whose meat intake is relatively lower than the global average.

Introduction: Emerging evidences have inconsistently reported that dietary components mediate the relationship between low socioeconomic status (SES) and higher cardiometabolic risk, but the findings are limited in Korean. Hypothesis: We tested the hypothesis whether the education level as a proxy for SES is associated with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and this association is mediated by dietary pattern. Methods: We used nationally representative data from the Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (2008-2011) for cross-sectional analyses (Total number of subjects=22 607, 30-64 yrs). Dietary data were assessed using food frequency questionnaire including 63 food items and were categorized into seven food groups based on the Korea nutrient database. Metabolic syndrome was defined using revised National Cholesterol Education Program criteria. The possible mediating effect of dietary components (fruit, vegetable, red meat, milk, and soft-drink) on the association between education level and metabolic syndrome was tested using a multiple mediation model. Results: Education levels had direct and indirect effects via dietary consumption patterns on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Higher education level was directly associated with lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome (Odds ratio [OR]: 0.854, 95% Confidence Intervals [CIs]: 0.817-0.894). Regarding the medicating effect of dietary patterns, higher education level was indirectly associated with decreased prevalence of metabolic syndrome by high in fruit intake (OR: 0.983, 95% CIs: 0.947-0.992), red meat intake (OR: 0.991, 95% CIs: 0.985-0.996), milk intake (OR: 0.994, 95% CIs: 0.992-0.998), and by low in soft-drink intake (OR: 0.995, 95% CIs: 0.992-0.998). Gender modified the association between education level and metabolic syndrome prevalence. In women, there was significant inverse relationship between education level and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome with significant mediating effect of dietary pattern on metabolic syndrome. Conversely, mediating effect of dietary pattern was not observed in men. Conclusions: In conclusion, there was inverse association between education level and prevalence of metabolic syndrome, which is partially explained by specific dietary components in Korean adults. Our results provide information for establishing dietary guideline and nutrition policy to prevent and manage metabolic syndrome.

Methods: We analyzed data from 68.5 million persons to assess the trends in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adults between 1980 and 2015. Using the Global Burden of Disease study data and methods, we also quantified the burden of disease related to high body-mass index (BMI), according to age, sex, cause, and BMI in 195 countries between 1990 and 2015. Restults: In 2015, a total of 107.7 million children and 603.7 million adults were obese. Since 1980, the prevalence of obesity has doubled in more than 70 countries and has continuously increased in most other countries. Although the prevalence of obesity among children has been lower than that among adults, the rate of increase in childhood obesity in many countries has been greater than the rate of increase in adult obesity. High BMI accounted for 4.0 million deaths globally, nearly 40% of which occurred in persons who were not obese. More than two thirds of deaths related to high BMI were due to cardiovascular disease. The disease burden related to high BMI has increased since 1990; however, the rate of this increase has been attenuated owing to decreases in underlying rates of death from cardiovascular disease. Conclusions: The rapid increase in the prevalence and disease burden of elevated BMI highlights the need for continued focus on surveillance of BMI and identification, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions to address this problem.

Adiponectin, an adipokine, has been described as showing physiological benefits against obesity-related malfunctions and vascular dysfunction. Several natural compounds that promote the expression and secretion of adipokines in adipocytes could be useful for treating metabolic disorders. This study investigated the effect of fisetin, a dietary flavonoid, on the regulation of adiponectin in adipocytes using 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. The expression and secretion of adiponectin increased in 3T3-L1 cells upon treatment with fisetin in a dose-dependent manner. Fisetin-induced adiponectin secretion was inhibited by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) antagonists. It was also revealed that fisetin increased the activities of PPARs and silent mating type information regulation 2 homologue 1 (SIRT1) in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, the up-regulation of adiponectin and the activation of PPARs induced by fisetin were prevented by a SIRT1 inhibitor. Fisetin also promoted deacetylation of PPAR γ coactivator 1 (PGC-1) and its interaction with PPARs. SIRT knockdown by siRNA significantly decreased both adiponectin production and PPARs-PGC-1 interaction. These results provide evidence that fisetin promotes the gene expression of adiponectin through the activation of SIRT1 and PPARs in adipocytes.

Arginase may play a major role in the regulation of vascular function in various cardiovascular disorders by impairing nitric oxide (NO) production. In the current study, we investigated whether supplementation of the arginase inhibitor N(ω)-hydroxy-nor-l-arginine (nor-NOHA) could restore endothelial function in an animal model of diet-induced obesity. Arginase 1 expression was significantly lower in the aorta of C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) supplemented with nor-NOHA (40mgkg(-1)/day) than in mice fed HFD without nor-NOHA. Arginase inhibition led to considerable increases in eNOS expression and NO levels and significant decreases in the levels of circulating ICAM-1. These findings were further confirmed by the results of siRNA-mediated knockdown of Arg in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. In conclusion, arginase inhibition can help restore dysregulated endothelial function by increasing the eNOS-dependent NO production in the endothelium, indicating that arginase could be a therapeutic target for correcting obesity-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction.

We aimed to investigate whether 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) has effects on cholesterol efflux in adipocytes and modulates ABCA1 expression in high fat fed mice. Fully differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes were tested for the cytotoxicity of DNJ and cholesterol efflux into apoA1/HDL was then assessed. ABCA1 protein levels and nuclear abundance of LXRα were measured after the treatment of DNJ in differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The effects of 12 week DNJ supplementation on ABCA1 gene expression in epididymal adipose tissue of high fat (HF) fed mice were further evaluated. Overnight treatment of DNJ increased cholesterol efflux mediated with ApoA1 and HDL in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. DNJ increased the protein expression of ABCA1 gene and enhanced the nuclear presence of LXRα, the transcription factor for ABCA1 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. DNJ supplementation for 12 weeks upregulated the expression of ABCA1 in epididymal adipose tissue in HF fed mice, however, the effect was not related to the increase in circulating HDL-cholesterol levels. Thus, DNJ appears to have a positive impact on the reverse cholesterol metabolism by activating the ABCA1–LXRα pathway and enhancing the cholesterol efflux. DNJ may decrease the risk of metabolic disorders related to abnormal regulation of reverse cholesterol transport.

We fabricated hybrid structures using combined properties of organic and inorganic materials for application in light emitting diode. The hybrid structures were demonstrated using poly[2-methoxy-5-(3′,7′-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MDMO-PPV) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as organic materials and n-GaN as inorganic materials. To investigate the effects of organic layer thickness, we changed polymer concentration and spin speed of MDMO-PPV solution. We obtained current rectifying behaviour with MDMO-PPV layer of approximate 60 nm thickness. The hybrid structure shows broad emissions covering orange range in both photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra and its band structures matched well with energy band gap of GaN and MDOM-PPV. We expect the potential applications and the enhanced efficiency in optoelectronic devices with hybrid structure by making progress the results.

Since arginase has been shown to compete with nitric oxide (NO) synthase, emerging evidence has reported that arginase inhibition improves obesity by increasing NO production. Semen cuscutae (SC), which is a well-known Chinese medicine, has multiple biological functions such as anti-oxidant function and immune regulation. In this study, we investigated whether the SC as a natural arginase inhibitor influences hepatic lipid abnormalities and whole-body adiposity in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. The lipid accumulation was significantly reduced by SC treatment in oleic acid-induced hepatic steatosis in vitro. Additionally, SC supplementation substantially lowered HFD-induced increases in arginase activity and weights of liver and visceral fat tissue, while increasing hepatic NO. Furthermore, elevated mRNA expressions of sterol regulatory element-binding transcription factor 1 (SREBP-1c), fatty-acid synthase (FAS), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-&gamma, )1, and PPAR-&gamma, 2 in HFD-fed mice were significantly attenuated by SC supplementation. Taken together, SC, as a novel natural arginase inhibitor, showed anti-obesity properties by modulating hepatic arginase and NO production and metabolic pathways related to hepatic triglyceride (TG) metabolism.

Bifacial and semitransparent hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin-film solar cells were prepared with front and rear transparent conducting oxide (TCO) contacts using a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition process. Increased power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) and average visible transmissions (AVTs) in the visible wavelength range were realized in the cases of the bifacial and semitransparent solar cells based on the optimization of the device designs, such as front TCO contacts, intrinsic a-Si:H absorbers (i-a-Si:H), p-type hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon carbide, and n-type hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon layers. The dependencies of the performance parameters of the solar cells on the illumination direction and intensity were also investigated systematically. As the film thickness of the i-a-Si:H absorber layers increased from 150 nm to 450 nm, the PCEs of the solar cells respectively increased in the ranges of 6.01–7.50% and 5.25–6.25% when front and rear illuminations were used for a standard light intensity of 100 mW/cm2, while the AVTs decreased from 22.76% to 15.67% irrespective of illumination direction. The best PCEs of the bifacial and semitransparent solar cells that were fabricated with the use of optimal conditions were respectively equal to 7.94% and 6.20% when front and rear illumination conditions were used. The corresponding AVT was equal to 14.34%. The performance parameters of bifacial and semitransparent a-Si:H solar cells at varying illumination intensities in the range of 10–100 mW/cm2 were also investigated, and yielded consistent PCE values in the range of 6.39–6.62% with front illumination, and 4.95–5.15% with rear illumination.
