Purpose: To investigate the effects of shade tab color variations (tooth-colored vs. gingiva-colored) and surface treatment (application of mineral oil) on the trueness of color reproduction from dental shade tabs to 3D-printed full-color dental casts, using digital scans obtained from an intraoral scanner., Materials and Methods: Pristine tooth-colored (with 16 shade tabs) and gingiva-colored (with five shade tabs) shade guides were digitally scanned using an intraoral scanner, and subsequently, 3D-printed replicas were created using a full-color material jetting 3D printer. Three color measurements using a contact type digital spectrophotometer were recorded, including actual shade tabs (R0), dried 3D-printed study samples (R P1 ), and study samples with mineral oil application (R P2 ), in this study to calculate color differences between the actual shade tabs and 3D-printed ones. The CIEDE2000 formula was used to calculate the color differences (color reproduction trueness) between reference shade tabs and 3D-printed full-color study samples-without and with mineral oil, ∆E 00 (R P1 ), and ∆E 00 (R P2 ). ∆E 00 (R P1 ) and ∆E 00 (R P2 ) were compared with a 50:50% accessibility threshold (AT) and a 50:50% perceptibility threshold (PT). A grading system, based on the relative ranges of AT and PT, was employed. The percentage of samples falling into each color-matching category was then recorded. The data collected were subjected to statistical analysis, utilizing a mixed model ANOVA to evaluate the effects of shade tab color and mineral oil application on color differences, α = 0.05., Results: The application of mineral oil significantly affected the ∆E 00 [F(1, 378) = 19.1, p = < 0.0001]. However, this effect was only significant for the gingiva-colored study samples; the mineral oil application significantly decreased color difference, showing ∆E 00 (R P1 ) of 8.71 ± 3.78 and ∆E 00 (R P2 ) of 6.55 ± 2.14 (p < 0.0001). For the tooth-colored groups, the mineral oil application did not yield any color difference, showing ∆E 00 (R P1 ) of 7.05 ± 2.35 and ∆E 00 (R P2 ) of 6.94 ± 2.35 (p = 0.497). In the absence of mineral oil, gingiva-colored samples revealed a significantly larger ∆E 00 (R P1 ) of 8.71 ± 3.78 compared to tooth-colored samples at 7.05 ± 2.35 (p = 0.017). Conversely, mineral oil application rendered comparable ∆E 00 (R P2 ) values between gingiva-colored (6.55 ± 2.14) and tooth-colored (6.94 ± 2.35) samples (p = 0.558). All 3D-printed full-color samples showed Grade 1 (extremely unacceptable mismatch) and Grade 2 (clearly unacceptable mismatch), regardless of the shades or the presence of mineral oil., Conclusions: Utilizing an intraoral scanner to gather digital color data, along with an MJ 3D printer, offers the potential for producing 3D-printed full-color dental casts for prosthesis characterization in the dental laboratory. While mineral oil improves the color reproduction trueness of gingiva-colored objects, all 3D-printed full-color samples exhibited unacceptable mismatches when compared to their target objects. Background: The chronic systemic inflammatory response in periodontitis may be a potential risk factor for dementia, especially in adults. This study determined the association between periodontal treatment and dementia in adults and evaluated the effect of regular scaling treatment on the risk of dementia in this population., Methods: This case-control study identified 18,930 patients with a dementia-related diagnosis from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Scaling and periodontal emergency treatments were evaluated after 1 year and 3 years. Using multivariable logistic regression analysis to evaluate the association between periodontal emergency treatment and dementia risk., Results: The results showed that scaling treatment rates were lower in the dementia cohort than the non-dementia cohort after 1 and 3 years. Patients who received periodontal emergency treatment within 3 years had a significantly increased risk of dementia. Furthermore, patients with periodontitis who did not receive scaling treatment within 3 years had a higher risk of dementia than patients without periodontitis (OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.10-1.35)., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that periodontitis and dementia are associated, and that periodontitis is a risk factor for dementia in adults. The risk of dementia was dependent on the periodontal health status of adults, and our findings suggest that regular scaling can reduce the incidence of dementia in adults. Purpose: To describe and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of various dental caries diagnostic techniques, including the use of intraoral scanners for caries diagnosis based on near-infrared imaging (NIR) technology., Material and Methods: A MEDLINE search from 1980-2023 focused on dental caries diagnostic techniques, emphasizing intraoral scanners using NIR technology. Alternative caries detection methods were also evaluated for their advantages and limitations, enabling a comparison with NIR. The review included traditional caries tools, the latest detection methods, and NIR's role in intraoral scanners, drawing from case reports and both in vivo and in vitro studies. Keywords like "caries detection," "intraoral scanners," and "Near Infrared Imaging (NIRI)" guided the search. After screening titles and abstracts for relevance, full texts with valuable insights were thoroughly analyzed. The data was grouped into three: traditional diagnostics, advanced digital methods, and intraoral scanner-based detection., Results: This comprehensive narrative review described and discussed the current state of dental caries diagnostic methods, given the insufficient number of clinical investigations suitable for a systematic review. Traditional caries diagnosis techniques have shown variable accuracy dependent on a dentist's experience and the potential over-removal of healthy tooth structures. Intraoral scanners have emerged as a novel caries detection method, because of their integration of NIR technology. Various studies have confirmed the efficacy of NIR in detecting interproximal caries and in the early diagnosis of non-cavitated caries. Specifically, intraoral scanners have demonstrated promising results, proving comparable to established diagnostic methods like bitewing radiography. Nevertheless, while the integration of NIR into intraoral scanners seems promising, the technology still faces challenges, notably its accuracy in detecting secondary and subgingival cavities. However, with anticipated integrations of AI, NIR in intraoral scanners could revolutionize early caries detection., Conclusions: Intraoral scanners with NIR technology offer non-destructive imaging, real-time lesion visuals, and enhanced patient communication. Although comparable to bitewing radiography in some studies, a universally accepted diagnostic tool is lacking. Purpose: To investigate the effects of 4 denture base materials, 2 surface treatment protocols, and simulated brushing (SB) on the surface hardness, surface roughness, surface gloss, and the surface loss of denture base materials., Materials and Methods: Four denture base resin material groups (compression-molded, injection-molded, 3D-printed, and milled) with two different surface treatment protocols (polished and glazed) were utilized in this study. A total of 80 samples (n = 10) were evaluated for surface hardness (Vickers) before SB. SB was performed for each sample (custom-built V8 cross brushing machine, 50,000 reciprocal strokes). Surface roughness (Ra) was measured before and after SB with a non-contact optical profilometer. Surface gloss was performed using a glossmeter to determine changes in surface reflectivity of the specimens before and after SB. Surface loss (wear resistance) was measured after SB using optical profilometry. The effects of material, surface treatment, and SB on all surface characteristics were examined with two-way and three-way analysis of variance models (ANOVA) (α = 0.05)., Results: The polished compression-molded group had significantly higher surface hardness than all other groups. The protective glaze coating significantly increased the surface hardness for all groups (P < 0.001). SB increased the surface roughness of all groups regardless of surface treatments (P < 0.001). The increase in surface roughness after SB was significantly higher with polished surface treatment than with a glazed surface treatment in all groups (P < 0.001). Surface gloss was significantly higher with the glazed surface treatment than with the polished surface treatment for all denture base materials (P < 0.001). After SB, milled denture base material showed the highest, and 3D-printed material showed the second highest surface gloss compared to the other groups (P < 0.001), regardless of surface treatment. In all materials tested, surface glaze significantly decreased surface loss (P < 0.001). With the glaze surface treatment, compression-molded denture base material had significantly less surface loss (more surface gain) than other materials, while with the polished surface treatment, 3D-printed denture base material had the least surface loss when compared with other groups., Conclusions: A single layer of nano-filled, light-polymerizing protective glaze coating has displayed potential for enhancing the longevity of denture base materials, as evidenced by increased hardness and wear resistance. Following simulated brushing, the milled denture material exhibited the highest surface gloss and lowest surface roughness among all groups, regardless of the surface treatment protocol. This indicates that milled denture base material possesses favorable surface properties and may serve as a viable alternative to traditional denture base materials., (© 2023 The Authors. Purpose: To compare the accuracy of four digital scanning methods in duplicating a complete denture., Material and Methods: Four scanning methods were used: cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), Straumann desktop scanner (DS), Trios intraoral scanner (TIO), and Virtuo Vivo intraoral scanner (VVIO). Each method was used to duplicate all the surfaces of a printed complete denture. The denture was scanned 10 times in each group. The trueness (in root mean square, RMS) and precision (in standard deviation, SD) were calculated by comparing the combined dentition, denture extension, and intaglio surfaces with the reference file. One-way analysis of variance and F-tests were used to test statistical differences (α = 0.05)., Results: For the scanning accuracy of the whole denture, CBCT showed the highest RMS (0.249 ± 0.020 mm) and lowest trueness than DS (0.124 ± 0.014 mm p < 0.001), TIO (0.131 ± 0.006 mm p < 0.001), and VVIO (0.227 ± 0.020 mm p = 0.017), while DS and TIO showed smaller RMS than VVIO (p < 0.001). For the trueness of dentition, denture extension, and intaglio surfaces, CBCT also showed the highest mean RMS and lowest trueness among all groups (p < 0.001). DS and TIO had smaller mean RMS and higher trueness among all groups in all surfaces (p < 0.001, except VVIO in intaglio surface, p > 0.05). TIO had significantly lower within-group variability of RMS and highest precision compared to DS (p = 0.013), CBCT (p = 0.001), and VVIO (p < 0.001) in the combined surface. For dentition and denture extension surfaces, TIO showed similar within-group variability of RMS with the DS group (p > 0.05) and lower than CBCT and VVIO (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: The 7 Series desktop scanner and Trios 4 intraoral scanner can duplicate dentures in higher trueness than CBCT and the Virtuo Vivo intraoral scanner. The Trios 4 intraoral scanner was more precise in the combined surfaces than other scanning methods, while the 7 Series desktop scanner and Trios 4 intraoral scanner were more precise in the denture extension surface., (© 2023 The Authors. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, nonspecific inflammation of the intestines that primarily comprises Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The incidence and prevalence of IBD have been increasing globally, highlighting the significance of research and prophylactic interventions. Virofree, a mixture of various botanical extracts (including grapes, cherries, olive leaves, marigolds, green tea, and others), has shown significant potential in disease prevention. This study examined the effects of Virofree on intestinal inflammation and the gut microbiota in mice using a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced model. The mice showed no adverse reactions when administered Virofree. Virofree administration reduced the disease activity index as indicated by amelioration of DSS-induced symptoms in the mice, including weight loss, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. Regarding the gut microbiota, Virofree intervention modulated the DSS-induced decrease in gut microbial diversity; the Virofree group showed no increase in the phyla Proteobacteria or Verrucomicrobia while displaying an increase in the genus Duncaniella , bacteria that may have protective properties. Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is a genotoxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that is metabolized by cytochrome P450 family 1 enzymes (CYP 1s) and can bind to DNA to form DNA adducts, leading to DNA damage and increased colorectal cancer risk. Previous studies have shown polymethoxyflavones to have a high potential for anticancer effects by regulating CYP 1s, especially nobiletin (NBT) and 5-demethylnobiletin (5-DMNB). However, the effects of NBT and 5-DMNB on B[a]P metabolism remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the effects of NBT and 5-DMNB on B[a]P-induced DNA damage in vitro and in vivo . In NCM460 cells, 5-DMNB and NBT appeared to reduce the metabolic conversion of B[a]P by regulating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)/CYP 1s signaling pathway. This process protected NCM460 cells from B[a]P's cytotoxic effects by decreasing DNA damage and suppressing B[a]P diol-epoxide-DNA adduct formation. In BALB/c mice, 5-DMNB and NBT also protected against B[a]P-induced DNA damage. Altogether, these findings indicate that 5-DMNB and NBT attenuate B[a]P-induced DNA damage by modulating biotransformation, highlighting their chemopreventive potential against B[a]P-induced carcinogenesis. Therefore, 5-DMNB and NBT are promising agents for colorectal cancer chemoprevention in the future.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of the manufacturing technologies on the surface (cameo and intaglio) accuracy (trueness and precision) of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) occlusal splints., Materials and Methods: The digital design of the master occlusal splint was designed in a CAD software program. Six groups (n = 10) were tested in this study, including Group 1 - Milling (Wax), Group 2 - Heat-polymerizing, Group 3 - Milling (M series), Group 4 - Milling (DWX-51/52D), Group 5 - 3D-printing (Cares P30), and Group 6 - 3D-printing (M2). The study samples were placed in a scanning jig fabricated from putty silicone and Type III dental stone. The study samples were then scanned with a laboratory scanner at the intaglio and cameo surfaces, and the scanned files were exported in standard tessellation language (STL) file format. The master occlusal splint STL file, was used as a reference to compare with all scanned samples at the intaglio and cameo surfaces in a surface matching software program. Root mean square (RMS, measured in mm, absolute value) values were calculated by the software for accuracy comparisons. Group means were used as the representation of trueness, and the standard deviation for each group was calculated as a measure of precision. Color maps were recorded to visualize the areas of deviation between study samples and the master occlusal splint file. The data were normalized and transformed to rank scores, and one-way ANOVA was used to test for the differences between the groups. Pairwise comparisons were made between different groups. Fishers least square differences were used to account for the family-wise error rate. A 5% significance level was used for all the tests., Results: The null hypotheses were rejected. The manufacturing technologies significantly affected the trueness of occlusal splints at both intaglio and cameo surfaces (p < 0.001). At the cameo surfaces, Group 1 - Milling (Wax) (0.03 ± 0.02 mm), Group 3 - Milling (M series) (0.04 ± 0.01 mm), and Group 4 - Milling (DWX-51/52D) (0.04 ± 0.01 mm) had the smallest mean RMS values and highest trueness. Group 3 had the smallest standard deviation and highest precision among all groups (p < 0.001, except p = 0.005 when compared with Group 2). Group 5 had the largest standard deviation and lowest precision among all groups (p < 0.001). At the intaglio surfaces, Group 1 - Milling (Wax) (0.06 ± 0.01 mm) had the smallest RMS values and highest trueness among all groups (p < 0.001), and Group 2 - Heat-polymerizing (0.20 ± 0.03 mm) and Group 5 - 3D-printing (Cares P30) (0.15 ± 0.05 mm) had significantly larger mean RMS and standard deviation values than all other groups (p < 0.001), with lowest trueness and precision. In the color maps, Group 2 - Heat-polymerizing and Group 5 - 3D-printing (Cares P30) showed the most discrepancies with yellow and red (positive discrepancies) in most areas, and Group 1 - Milling (Wax) showed the best and most uniform surface matching with the most area in green., Conclusion: The manufacturing technologies significantly affected the trueness and precision of occlusal splints at both intaglio and cameo surfaces. Background: Using deep learning for disease outcome prediction is an approach that has made large advances in recent years. Notwithstanding its excellent performance, clinicians are also interested in learning how input affects prediction. Clinical validation of explainable deep learning models is also as yet unexplored. This study aims to evaluate the performance of Deep SHapley Additive exPlanations (D-SHAP) model in accurately identifying the diagnosis code associated with the highest mortality risk., Methods: Incidences of at least one in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) for 168,693 patients as well as 1,569,478 clinical records were extracted from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. We propose a D-SHAP model to provide insights into deep learning model predictions. We trained a deep learning model to predict the 30-day mortality likelihoods of IHCA patients and used D-SHAP to see how the diagnosis codes affected the model's predictions. Physicians were asked to annotate a cardiac arrest dataset and provide expert opinions, which we used to validate our proposed method. A 1-to-4-point annotation of each record (current decision) along with four previous records (historical decision) was used to validate the current and historical D-SHAP values., Results: A subset consisting of 402 patients with at least one cardiac arrest record was randomly selected from the IHCA cohort. The median age was 72 years, with mean and standard deviation of 69 ± 17 years. Results indicated that D-SHAP can identify the cause of mortality based on the diagnosis codes. The top five most important diagnosis codes, namely respiratory failure, sepsis, pneumonia, shock, and acute kidney injury were consistent with the physician's opinion. Some diagnoses, such as urinary tract infection, showed a discrepancy between D-SHAP and clinical judgment due to the lower frequency of the disease and its occurrence in combination with other comorbidities., Conclusions: The D-SHAP framework was found to be an effective tool to explain deep neural networks and identify most of the important diagnoses for predicting patients' 30-day mortality. Objectives: The aim of the ITI Consensus Workshop on zygomatic implants was to provide Consensus Statements and Clinical Recommendations for the use of zygomatic implants., Materials and Methods: Three systematic reviews and one narrative review were written to address focused questions on (1) the indications for the use of zygomatic implants; (2) the survival rates and complications associated with surgery in zygomatic implant placement; (3) long-term survival rates of zygomatic implants and (4) the biomechanical principles involved when zygoma implants are placed under functional loads. Based on the reviews, three working groups then developed Consensus Statements and Clinical Recommendations. These were discussed in a plenary and finalized in Delphi rounds., Results: A total of 21 Consensus Statements were developed from the systematic reviews. Additionally, the group developed 17 Clinical Recommendations based on the Consensus Statements and the combined expertise of the participants., Conclusions: Zygomatic implants are mainly indicated in cases with maxillary bone atrophy or deficiency. Long-term mean zygomatic implant survival was 96.2% [95% CI 93.8; 97.7] over a mean follow-up of 75.4 months (6.3 years) with a follow-up range of 36-141.6 months (3-11.8 years). Immediate loading showed a statistically significant increase in survival over delayed loading. Sinusitis presented with a total prevalence of 14.2% [95% CI 8.8; 22.0] over a mean 65.4 months follow-up, representing the most common complication which may lead to zygomatic implant loss. This technical report describes a novel workflow for complete denture fabrication designed to abbreviate the necessary steps for dental prostheses delivery by using a 3-appointment protocol in which preliminary impressions are made in the first session together with the registration of maxillary lip support, occlusal plane, and reference lines for tooth arrangement. Purpose: To investigate the trueness of intraoral scanning in 8 commonly seen partially edentulous conditions., Materials and Methods: A maxillary dentoform was modified into the 8 commonly seen partially edentulous conditions. Each modification was scanned with a laboratory desktop scanner. Each modification was then scanned 10 times (n = 10) with an intraoral scanner. All scans were exported as STL files and then imported into a surface matching software using the best-fit alignment method. The dimensional differences between the study STL files from the intraoral scanner were compared to the corresponding reference STL files. The measurements were calculated as the root mean square (RMS) and defined as the trueness of the intraoral scans. In addition to the RMS values, qualitative assessments were completed on the color maps. The color maps produced by the surface matching software were used to visualize the areas of deviation between scans from the intraoral scanner and their corresponding reference files. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by pair-wise comparisons using Fisher's Protected Least Significant Difference were utilized to compare the differences between the groups in RMS values (α = 0.05)., Results: Partially edentulous condition significantly affected the trueness of the intraoral scans. Group 8 (Class IV) had significantly lower RMS (0.1878 ± 0.0455 mm) than all other groups (p < 0.001). Group 2 (Class II) and Group 7 (Class III modification I) are not significantly different from each other (Group 2: 0.5758 ± 0.0300 mm; Group 7: 0.5602 ± 0.0231 mm, p = 0.571), while they both had significantly higher RMS than all other groups (p < 0.001). The remaining groups showed the RMS values were within the range of 0.3001 ± 0.0891 mm (Group 6 - Class III with Long Edentulous Span) and 0.4541 ± 0.1039 mm (Group 1 - Class I)., Conclusion: Different partially edentulous conditions affected the trueness of the scans generated from the selected intraoral scanner. Class IV edentulous condition had the highest intraoral scan trueness. It is unknown if RMS values are clinically significant, and the validity of using intraoral scans directly for PRDP fabrication will need further studies., (© 2022 The Authors. This cohort study aimed to examine the association between prenatal exposure to illicit drugs and neurodevelopmental and disruptive behavioral disorders (DBD) in children aged 7-12 years, using data from four national databases in Taiwan from 2004 to 2016. We linked parental and child IDs from the Taiwan Maternal and Child Health database to track children's health status from birth to at least age 7 and identify those diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders. The study included 896,474 primiparous women who gave birth between 2004 and 2009, with 752 pregnant women with illicit drug use history and 7520 matched women without. The results of the study showed that prenatal illicit drug exposure was significantly associated with the development of neurodevelopmental disorders and DBD in offspring. The adjusted hazard ratios for developmental delay, mild-to-severe intellectual disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and DBD were 1.54 (95 % CI: 1.21-1.95), 2.63 (95 % CI: 1.64-4.19), 1.58 (95 % CI: 1.23-2.03), and 2.57 (95 % CI: 1.21-5.48), respectively. Furthermore, prenatal exposure to methamphetamine increased the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders and DBD in offspring, while opioid use was significantly associated with a higher risk of three types of neurodevelopmental disorders, but not with DBD. The use of sedative hypnotic drugs alone was not associated with any increased risk of the three types of neurodevelopmental disorders or DBD. Statement of Problem: Three-dimensional radiographic assessment of buccal bone thickness and its integrity from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) plays an essential role in immediate implant placement. However, the accuracy of CBCT measurements for the assessment of buccal bone thickness adjacent to maxillary anterior teeth is not well understood., Purpose: The purpose of this observational study was to evaluate the accuracy of measuring the buccal bone thickness of maxillary anterior teeth from CBCT compared with direct measurement from histologic sections. A secondary objective was to analyze whether a minimal level of buccal bone thickness of maxillary anterior teeth can be detected from the CBCT scan., Material and Methods: Five embalmed human cadavers with a complete anterior dentition were included in this study, providing 30 teeth for evaluation. After preparing reference notches at the gingival margin of each tooth, the anterior segments were scanned. The buccal bone thickness at 3, 5, and 7 mm from the notches was measured on the cross-sections obtained from the CBCT and histomorphometric images for a total of 90 sites. The CBCT measurements were compared with the histomorphometric measurements, and their agreement was assessed by using the Bland-Altman plots and intraclass correlation coefficients. The sensitivity and specificity of buccal bone detection were calculated from the CBCT scan., Results: Histologic examination showed absence of the buccal bone in 29 sites (32%). The mean ±standard deviation thickness of the buccal bone was 0.52 ±0.05 mm (range: 0 to 1.97 mm) from the CBCT analysis and 0.40 ±0.05 mm (range: 0 to 1.67 mm) from histology. Measurements obtained from the CBCT sections significantly overestimated the buccal bone thickness when compared with the histologic evaluation (P=.001). The intraclass correlation coefficient of buccal bone thickness between the CBCT and histology was ≤0.53, an agreement considered as poor. The sensitivity of the CBCT as a diagnostic tool to detect the presence or absence of the buccal bone was 75.4%, and the specificity was 65.5%., Conclusions: The buccal bone thickness of maxillary anterior teeth was less than 2 mm at all sites as measured with both CBCT and histology evaluations. CBCT measurements had relatively low accuracy and reliability for the measurement of buccal bone thickness. Purpose: To evaluate the effects of 5 manufacturing technologies and 2 finish line designs on the trueness and dimensional stability of 3D-printed definitive dies at finish line regions under different storage conditions and time., Material and Methods: Preparation of light chamfer and round shoulder finish lines were adopted individually on two mandibular first molar typodont teeth and digitalized as standard tessellation language (STL) files. A total of 240 samples (192 AM definitive dies and 48 definitive conventional stone dies) in 20 groups (n = 12) were manufactured based on 2 finishing line designs (chamfer and shoulder), 5 manufacturing technologies (4 additively manufactured technologies and conventional stone die), and 2 storage conditions (light exposure and dark). The 4 additively manufactured (AM) technologies include a DLP 3D-printer, an economic LED 3D-printer, a CLIP 3D-printer, and an SLA 3D-printer. All the study samples were distributed into two storage conditions. Subsequently, samples were digitalized to STL files at 3 different time points (within 36 hours, 1-month, and 3-months). A surface matching software was used to superimpose the sample STL files onto the corresponding original STL files with the best-fit alignment function. The trueness of each printed and stone definitive dies and their dimensional stabilities were measured by the root mean square (RMS, in mm). A linear mixed-effects model was used to test the effects of the finish line design, manufacturing technology, storage condition, and storage time on RMS values (α = 0.05)., Results: While finish line designs had no significant effects [F(1, 220) = 0.85, p < 0.358], the manufacturing technologies [F(3, 220) = 33.02, p < 0.001], storage condition [F(1, 220) = 4.11, p = 0.044], and storage time F(2, 440) = 10.37, p < 0.001] affected the trueness and dimensional stability of 3D-printed dies at finish line regions. No significant interactions were found among the 4 factors. For the manufacturing technologies, Type IV stone groups and LCD 3D-printer groups had significantly higher RMS values than the other 3 printers (p < 0.001) with no significant differences between Type IV stone and LCD 3D-printer groups (p = 0.577). DLP 3D-printer groups had higher RMS values than both SLA 3D-printer groups and CLIP 3D-printer groups (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences between SLA 3D-printer groups and CLIP 3D-printer groups, p = 0.671. For the effects of storage conditions, RMS values were significantly higher in the groups stored with the direct light exposure than the ones stored in the dark, p = 0.044. In terms of the effects of storage time, the RMS values were significantly higher after 1-month storage, p = 0.002; and 3-month storage, p < 0.001, than the ones at the immediate postmanufacturing stage. However, the RMS values after 1-month and 3-month storage were not significantly different from each other (p = 0.169)., Conclusions: Manufacturing technologies, storage conditions, and storage time significantly affected the trueness and dimensional stability of 3D-printed dies at finish line regions, while finish line designs had no significant effects. Among the AM technologies tested, all have produced either comparable or truer 3D-printed dies than the Type IV dental stone dies, and the CLIP and SLA 3D-printers produced the best outcomes. 3D-printed dies showed significant distortion after 1-month and 3-months storage, especially under light exposure storage conditions. These findings may negate the clinical need to preserve 3D-printed dies, and digital data should be preserved instead., (© 2022 The Authors. Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the evidence regarding the indications for placement of zygomatic implants to rehabilitate edentulous maxillae., Material and Methods: A focused question using the PIO format was developed, questioning "in patients in need of an implant-supported rehabilitation of the edentulous maxillae, what are the indications for the use of zygomatic implants''. The primary information analyzed and collected was a clear description of the indication for the use of zygomatic implants., Results: A total of 1266 records were identified through database searching. The full-text review was conducted for 117 papers, and 10 were selected to be included in this review. Zygomatic implant indications were extreme bone atrophy or deficiency secondary to different factors. The quad zygoma concept (two zygomatic implants bilaterally placed and splinted) was applied to 107 patients, the classic zygoma concept (one zygomatic implant bilaterally placed and splinted to standard anterior implants) was used in 88 patients, and the unilateral concept (one zygomatic implant on one side, splinted with one or more conventional implants) was employed in 14 patients., Conclusions: The main indication for the use of zygomatic implants was considered extreme maxillary bone atrophy, resulting from many factors. The clear definition of what was considered "extreme bone atrophy" is not uniquely defined in each paper. Further studies are needed to develop clear indications for zygomatic implants., (© 2023. Background: The Taiwanese government implemented stringent preventative health measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. However, these measures negatively affected the physical activity behaviors and psychological distress of individuals. In this study, we investigated the effects of Taiwan's COVID-19 alert-based restrictions on the physical activity behaviors and psychological distress of community-dwelling older adults., Methods: In this longitudinal study, 500 community-dwelling older adults were randomly sampled from a health promotion center in Taiwan. Telephone interviews were conducted between May 11, 2021, and August 17, 2021, which coincided with the Level 3 alert period when group physical activities were prohibited. Telephone interviews were again conducted between June 20, 2022, and July 4, 2022, after the alert level was reduced to Level 2 but group physical activities were prohibited period. Through the telephone interviews, data regarding the participants' physical activity behaviors (type and amount) and 5-item Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS-5) scores were collected. Moreover, data regarding physical activity behaviors were collected from the records of our previous health promotion programs, which were conducted before the national alert period. The obtained data were analyzed., Results: The alert levels influenced physical activity behaviors. Because of strict regulations, physical activity amount decreased during the Level 3 alert period and did not recover rapidly during the Level 2 alert period. Instead of engaging in group exercises (e.g., calisthenics and qigong), the older adults chose to exercise alone (e.g., strolling, brisk walking, and biking). Our findings indicate that the COVID-19 alert level has a significant influence on the amount of physical activity for participants (p < 0.05, partial η2 = 0.256), with pairwise comparisons showing that the physical activity amount decreased significantly across the three time periods (p < 0.05). The psychological distress of the participants did not appear to change during the regulation period. Although the participants' overall BSRS-5 score was slightly lower during the Level 2 alert period compared to the Level 3 alert period, the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.264, Cohen's d = 0.08) based on a paired t-test. However, the levels of anxiety (p = 0.003, Cohen's d = 0.23) and inferiority (p = 0.034, Cohen's d = 0.159) were considerably higher during the Level 2 alert period than during the Level 3 alert period., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that Taiwan's COVID-19 alert levels influenced the physical activity behaviors and psychological distress of community-dwelling older adults. Evidence shows that the dietary intake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from food processing induces the cellular DNA damage response and leads to the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). Therefore, protecting from cellular DNA damage might be an effective strategy in preventing CRC. Benzo[ a ]pyrene (B[ a ]P) was used as a CRC initiator in the present study. Compared with other stilbenoids, piceatannol (PIC) showed the most effective inhibition of B[ a ]P-induced cytochrome P450 1B1 (CYP1B1) protein expression in NCM460 normal human colon epithelial cells. PIC treatment alleviated DNA migration and enhanced the expression of DNA-repair-related proteins, including histone 2AX (H2AX), checkpoint kinase 1 (Chk1), and p53, in B[ a ]P-induced NCM460 cells. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, flow cytometry, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) revealed that PIC exerted antioxidative effects on NCM460 cells by increasing the glutathione (GSH) content and scavenging the excess intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by B[ a ]P. Furthermore, PIC suppressed B[ a ]P-induced CYP1B1 protein expression and stimulated miR-27b-3p expression. The upregulation of phase II detoxification enzymes, such as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) and quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), and the antioxidative enzyme, heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), via the activation of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway was observed in the PIC-treated group. Our results suggest that PIC is a potential CRC-blocking agent due to its ability to alleviate DNA damage, decrease intracellular ROS production, modulate the metabolism and detoxification of B[ a ]P, and activate the Nrf2 signaling pathway in B[ a ]P-induced NCM460 cells.

Background: Propafenone is a class IC antiarrhythmic agent that is commonly used as the first-line therapy for patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) in Taiwan. This study compared the efficacy and safety of generic (Rhynorm) and brand name (Rytmonorm) propafenone for rhythm control of paroxysmal AF in Taiwan., Methods: This was an open-label randomized multicenter noninferior study conducted in Taiwan. We enrolled 76 patients with AF. To investigate the efficacy of propafenone, we used a wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) event recorder to evaluate the daily burden of AF episodes in patients for 24 weeks. The primary efficacy endpoint was the frequency of AF with clinical significance, which was indicated by AF duration ≥30 seconds. The safety endpoints included proarrhythmic or hemodynamic adverse events., Result: To analyze the efficacy and safety of these agents, 71 patients (five patients with screen failure) were randomized to two groups, specifically a Rhynorm group (n = 37) and a Rytmonorm group (n = 34), for 24 weeks of the treatment period. The baseline patient characteristics were comparable between the groups. However, the Rhynorm group was older (65.4 ± 8.40 vs 59.8 ± 10.8 years; p = 0.02). The primary efficacy endpoint at week 24 decreased by 4.76% ± 18.5% (from 24.3% ± 33.9% to 19.0% ± 28.7%; p = 0.13) in the Rhynorm group and by 3.27% ± 15.2% (from 16.9% ± 26.4% to 13.6% ± 19.2%; p = 0.22) in the Rytmonorm group, with an intergroup difference of 1.5% ± 17.0%; p = 0.71. This finding indicates that Rhynorm is not inferior to Rytmonorm ( p = 0.023 for noninferiority). Protic pyrazoles ( N -unsubstituted pyrazoles) have been versatile ligands in various fields, such as materials chemistry and homogeneous catalysis, owing to their proton-responsive nature. This review provides an overview of the reactivities of protic pyrazole complexes. The coordination chemistry of pincer-type 2,6-bis(1 H -pyrazol-3-yl)pyridines is first surveyed as a class of compounds for which significant advances have made in the last decade. The stoichiometric reactivities of protic pyrazole complexes with inorganic nitrogenous compounds are then described, which possibly relates to the inorganic nitrogen cycle in nature. The last part of this article is devoted to outlining the catalytic application of protic pyrazole complexes, emphasizing the mechanistic aspect. The role of the NH group in the protic pyrazole ligand and resulting metal-ligand cooperation in these transformations are discussed.

Purpose: To investigate surface characteristics (roughness and contact angle), anti-biofilm formation, and mechanical properties (mini-flexural strength) of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) polymer, and three-dimensional (3D) printed resin for denture base fabrication compared with conventional heat polymerized denture base resins., Materials and Methods: A total of 60 discs and 40 rectangular specimens were fabricated from one CAD-CAM (AvaDent), one 3D printed (Cosmos Denture), and two conventional heat polymerized (Lucitone 199 and VipiWave) materials for denture base fabrication. Roughness was determined by Ra value; the contact angle was measured by the sessile drop method. The biofilm formation inhibition behavior was analyzed through Candida albicans adhesion, while mini-flexural strength test was done using a three-point bending test. The data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics (α = 0.05)., Results: The CAD-CAM PMMA group showed the lowest C. albicans adhesion (log CFU/mL: 3.74 ± 0.57) and highest mini-flexural strength mean (114.96 ± 16.23 MPa). 3D printed specimens presented the highest surface roughness (Ra: 0.317 ± 0.151 μm) and lowest mini-flexural strength values (57.23 ± 9.07 MPa). However, there was no statistical difference between CAD-CAM PMMA and conventional groups for roughness, contact angle, and mini-flexural strength., Conclusions: CAD-CAM milled materials present surface and mechanical properties similar to conventional resins and show improved behavior in preventing C. albicans adhesion. Purpose: The study aimed to compare the tensile bond strength (TBS) of auto-polymerizing and heat-polymerizing denture reliners on the conventional (compression-molding and injection-molding) and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (milled and 3D-printed) denture base materials., Materials and Methods: Eighty standard dogbone-shaped specimens were fabricated from four materials: compression-molding, injection-molding, milled, and 3D-printed denture base materials. A 3-mm cutoff was removed from each specimen at the midsection, and all specimens were reattached with either auto-polymerizing (n = 10) or heat-polymerizing (n = 10) reliner. The TBS was measured on the universal testing machine. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the fractured surfaces at cross sections to determine the dominant failure mode in each group. Two-way ANOVA was used to examine the effects of denture base material and reliner on the TBS (α = 0.05). Weibull survival analysis was also used to determine the survival probability curves., Results: Heat-polymerizing reliner led to a higher TBS than the auto-polymerizing reliner, except in the compression-molding (p = 0.573) groups. Compression-molding denture base material connected with a heat-polymerizing reliner showed the highest TBS (29.8 ± 6.9 MPa), whereas 3D-printed denture base material connected with an auto-polymerizing reliner showed the lowest TBS (7.2 ± 0.9 MPa). The survival probability based on the Weibull model demonstrated that the compression-molding denture base material connected with either auto-polymerizing or heat-polymerizing reliners had the longest survival time to failure, whereas 3D-printed denture base material relined with auto-polymerizing reline material showed the shortest survival time to failure. Under the SEM, the compression-molding groups demonstrated that the failure modes were mixed but predominantly cohesive. The injection-molding and milled groups showed predominantly adhesive failures at the denture base-reline material interfaces. The dominant mode of failure in the 3D-printed groups was cohesive failures within the bonding adhesive., Conclusions: Although the heat-polymerizing reliner led to a higher TBS than the auto-polymerizing reliner in most denture base materials, the compression-molding denture base material can achieve high TBS with both reliners. Introduction: Serious infections are an important concern for patients with autoimmune conditions. We sought to estimate serious infection rates among patients with select autoimmune conditions relative to the general population in Taiwan and the USA., Methods: This retrospective cohort study estimated setting-specific standardized serious infection incidence rates and ratios among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, including extra-renal lupus and lupus nephritis, rheumatoid arthritis and primary membranous nephropathy, compared with the general population using insurance claims for hospitalizations between 2000 and 2013. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios for serious infections, adjusting for age, sex, index year, prior serious infection, comorbidities and medications., Results: In Taiwan, serious infection rates were 22.7, 28.7, 70.6, 43.4 and 215.3 per 1000 person-years among the general population and among cohorts of patients with primary membranous nephropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, extra-renal lupus and lupus nephritis, respectively. In the USA, serious infection rates were 2.6, 9.0, 15.6, 21.0 and 63.3 per 1000 person-years among the general population and among cohorts of patients with primary membranous nephropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, extra-renal lupus and lupus nephritis, respectively. Patients had significantly higher serious infection rates than the general population in both settings, largely driven by bacterial, respiratory, urinary tract and opportunistic infections. Patients with lupus nephritis had the highest burden of serious infections relative to the general population, with 7- to 25-fold higher adjusted hazard ratios in Taiwan and the USA, respectively., Conclusion: This study identified a significant excess serious infection burden among patients with targeted autoimmune conditions compared with the general populations in Taiwan and the USA., (© 2022. Purpose: To investigate the translucency parameters of traditional, milled, and 3D-printed denture base materials at 3 different thicknesses and the color masking ability of each material against a metallic background between different thicknesses., Material and Methods: A traditional heat-polymerizing polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) (H-Lucitone) material was used as the control group. Two milled pre-polymerized resin blocks (M-Lucitone and IvoBase) and five 3D-printed denture base materials (P-Lucitone, Dentca LP, Dentca OP, Formlabs, and Kulzer) were used as experimental groups. A total of 240 samples, (n = 30, per material) were fabricated to a final specimen dimension of 12×12 mm and in thicknesses of 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 mm (n = 10 per thickness/material) according to the manufacturers' recommendations. The color coordinates (L*, a*, b*) in CIELab color space for all specimens placed against a white, black, and metallic background were measured with a spectrophotometer. The translucency parameters (TP 00 ) at each thickness and the color differences between 1 mm and 2 mm (dE 00M1-2 ) and between 2 mm and 3 mm (dE 00M2-3 ) against the metallic background were calculated with the CIEDE2000 color matrix. Comparisons between the groups for differences in TP 00 were made using One-way ANOVA separately for each thickness. Comparisons of groups and materials for differences in dE 00M1-2 and dE 00M2-3 were made using Two-way ANOVA and Fisher's Protected Least Significant Differences (α = 0.05)., Results: The TP 00 decreased with increasing thickness in all 8 material groups. All 3D-printed materials, except P-Lucitone, had higher TP 00 than milled pre-polymerized resin materials (M-Lucitone and IvoBase), and traditional heat-polymerizing PMMA (H-Lucitone) material (P<.001) at all thicknesses. In the 1 mm and 2 mm thickness, heat-polymerizing acrylic resin (H-Lucitone) had the lowest TP 00 , and in the 3 mm thickness, milled acrylic resin (M-Lucitone and IVOBase) had had lowest TP 00 (p < 0.001). All material groups had significantly lower values of dE 00M2-3 than dE 00M1-2 (p < 0.001). The color differences dE 00M2-3 were significantly lower in H-Lucitone, M-Lucitone, P-Lucitone, and IvoBase groups than in other materials, while the color difference of dE 00M1-2 was significantly lower in H-Lucitone, P-Lucitone and Dentca LP than other materials (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: The results from this study provide clinicians and dental technicians with information regarding the selection of denture base materials to achieve desired color masking outcomes, according to available prosthetic space. Thicker prostheses significantly improved the color masking abilities of denture acrylic resins against a metallic background. In a thickness of 1 and 2 mm, the heat-polymerizing acrylic resin had a lower translucency parameter and better color masking ability. When the prosthesis thickness reached 3 mm, the milled acrylic resin had a lower translucency parameter and better color masking ability. When compared to the heat-polymerizing resin and milled acrylic resin materials, except for one 3D-printing resin (P-Lucitone), the color masking abilities of the remaining 3D-printing resin materials were low, regardless of prosthesis thickness., (© 2022 The Authors. Driven by the ever-growing awareness of sustainability and circular economy, renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable fiber-based packaging materials are emerging as alternatives to fossil-derived, nonbiodegradable single-use plastics for the packaging industry. However, without functional barrier coatings, the water/moisture vulnerability and high permeability of fiber-based packaging significantly restrain its broader application as primary packaging for food, beverages, and drugs. Herein, we develop waterborne complex dispersion barrier coatings consisting of natural, biodegradable polysaccharides (i.e., chitosan and carboxymethyl cellulose) through a scalable, one-pot mechanochemical pathway. By tailoring the electrostatic complexation, the key element to form a highly crosslinked and interpenetrated polymer network structure, we formulate complex dispersion barrier coatings with excellent film-forming property and adaptable solid-viscosity profiles suitable for paperboard and molded pulp substrates. Our complex dispersions enable the formation of a uniform, defect-free, and integrated coating layer, leading to a remarkable oil and grease barrier and efficient water/moisture sensitivity reduction while still exhibiting excellent recyclability profile of the resulting fiber-based substrates. This natural, biorenewable, and repulpable barrier coating is a promising candidate to serve as a sustainable option for fiber-based packaging intended for the food and food service packaging industry.

Soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is the most active part in forest soil carbon pool, the responses of which to climate warming has profound effects on forest carbon cycling. Based on a manipulative soil warming experiment in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests, we collected soil solutions in situ and used ultraviolet-visible, infrared and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy analyses to explore the effects of soil warming (+4 ℃, 1 year) on soil DOC quantity and quality along the soil profile. The results showed that soil DOC flux remained constant along the soil profile. Soil DOC mainly included two humic-like fractions and one microbial metabolite. Warming significantly decreased soil DOC flux and the abundance of aromatic and hydrophobic components, and increased the amount of low molecular weight carbohydrates. Furthermore, soil warming increased the relative proportion of humic-like fractions in the surface soil layer (0-10 cm) and microbial metabolite in the deep soil layer (30-40 cm), indicating that warming might accelerate microbial turnover in the deep layer. Overall, soil warming not only decreased soil DOC content, but also simplified the composition of soil DOC in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests.

This systematic review aimed to study the outcomes of CAD-CAM (milled and 3D-printed) interim dental prostheses when compared to conventional ones. The focused question of "In natural teeth, what are the outcomes of CAD-CAM interim FDPs compared to the conventionally-manufactured ones regarding marginal fit, mechanical properties, esthetics, and color stability" was formulated. The systematic search was conducted electronically in the PubMed/MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE, Web of Science, New York Academy of Medicine Grey Literature Report, and Google Scholar databases by using the MeSH keywords and keywords associated with the focused question and limiting articles to those published between 2000 and 2022. A manual search was conducted in selected dental journals. The results were analyzed qualitatively and are presented in table format. Of the included studies, 18 studies were in vitro and 1 was a randomized clinical trial. Of the eight studies analyzing the mechanical properties, five studies favored the milled interim restorations, one study favored both 3D-printed and milled interim restorations, and two studies reported better mechanical properties in conventional interim restorations. Among four studies evaluating the marginal discrepancies, two studies favored the marginal fit in milled interim restorations, one study reported a better marginal fit in both milled and 3D-printed interim restorations, and one study found conventional interim restorations have a better marginal fit and smaller marginal discrepancy when compared to both milled and 3D-printed restorations. Among five studies that evaluated both the mechanical properties and marginal fit, 1 study favored 3D-printed interim restorations and four studies favored milled interim restorations over the conventional ones. Two studies analyzing the esthetics outcomes demonstrated better results with milled interim restorations compared to conventional and 3D-printed interim restorations in terms of their color stabilities. The risk of bias was low for all the studies reviewed. The high level of heterogeneity within the studies excluded meta-analysis. Most of the studies favored the milled interim restorations over the 3D-printed and conventional restorations. The results suggested that milled interim restorations offer a better marginal fit, higher mechanical properties, and better esthetic outcomes in terms of color stabilities.

Inflammatory bowel disease has become a significant health concern across the globe, causing frequent and long-term harm to the digestive system. This study evaluated the effect of piceatannol (PIC) and 3'-hydroxypterostilbene (HPSB) on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice and investigated whether their effects are exerted through the amelioration of gut barrier dysfunction to reduce the severity of colitis. The findings showed that both PIC and HPSB attenuated inflammation by inhibiting the TNF-α/NF-κB/MLC pathway and reducing NLRP3 inflammasome activation. However, PIC was comparably effective in modulating tight junctions. The results may be attributed to the effect of PIC on reducing cell apoptosis-associated protein expression, including Bax/Bcl-2 and caspase-3 activation. Furthermore, microbiota analysis revealed that both PIC and HPSB increased representative probiotic species, including Akkermansiaceae and Lactobacillus intestinalis , and exhibited inhibitory effects on several bacterial species ( Spiroplasmataceae and Acholeplasmataceae ). Based on linear discriminant analysis effect size, butyrate-producing bacteria were identified as a biomarker in the PIC group. Overall, the results demonstrated that PIC repressed inflammation, inhibited cell apoptosis, and regulated microbiota composition. Consequently, PIC is more effective in maintaining gut barrier integrity than HPSB, and it is a promising ingredient in the development of functional food for colitis prevention.

Based on multi-component alloys using precipitation hardening, a Cu-Ni-Si-Fe copper alloy was prepared and studied for hardness, electrical conductivity, and wear resistance. Copper Nickel Silicon (Cu-Ni-Si) intermetallic compounds were observed as precipitates, leading to an increase in mechanical and physical properties. Further, the addition of Fe was discussed in intermetallic compound formation. Moreover, microstructures, age hardening, and dry sliding wear resistances of the present alloy were analyzed and compared with C17200 beryllium copper. The results showed that the present alloy performed extraordinarily, with 314 HV in hardness and 22.2 %IACS in conductivity, which is almost similar to C17200 alloy. Furthermore, the dry sliding wear resistance of the present alloy was 2199.3 (m/MPa·mm 3 ) at an ambient temperature, leading to an improvement of 208% compared with the C17200 alloy.

Peri-implant lesions, such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, are bacterial-derived diseases that happen around dental implants, compromising the long-term stability and esthetics of implant restoration. Here, we report a surface-modification method on zirconia implant abutment using silver linear-beam ion implantation to reduce the bacterial growth around the implant site, thereby decreasing the prevalence of peri-implant lesions. The surface characteristics of zirconia after ion implantation was evaluated using energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and a contact-angle device. The antibacterial properties of implanted zirconia were evaluated using Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis . The biocompatibility of the material surface was evaluated using human gingival fibroblasts. Our study shows that the zirconia surface was successfully modified with silver nanoparticles by using the ion-implantation method. The surface modification remained stable, and the silver-ion elution was below 1 ppm after one-month of storage. The modified surface can effectively eliminate bacterial growth, while the normal gingiva's cell growth is not interfered with. The results of the study demonstrate that a silver-ion-implanted zirconia surface possesses good antibacterial properties and good biocompatibility. The surface modification using silver-ion implantation is a promising method for future usage.

Purpose: To assess abdominal fat deposition and lumbar vertebra with iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least-squares estimation (IDEAL-IQ) and investigate their correlation with menopausal status., Materials and Methods: Two hundred forty women who underwent routine abdominal MRI and IDEAL-IQ between January 2016 and April 2021 were divided into two cohorts (first cohort: 120 pre- or postmenopausal women with severe fatty livers or without fatty livers; second cohort: 120 pre- or postmenopausal women who were obese or normal weight). The fat fraction (FF) values of the liver (FF liver ) and lumbar vertebra (FF lumbar ) in the first group and the FF values of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) (FF SAT ) and FF lumbar in the second group were measured and compared using IDEAL-IQ., Results: Two hundred forty women were evaluated. FF lumbar was significantly higher in both pre- and postmenopausal women with severe fatty liver than in patients without fatty livers (premenopausal women: p < 0.001, postmenopausal women: p < 0.001). No significant difference in the FF lumbar was observed between obese patients and normal-weight patients among pre- and postmenopausal women (premenopausal women: p = 0.113, postmenopausal women: p = 0.092). Significantly greater lumbar fat deposition was observed in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal women with or without fatty liver and obesity ( p < 0.001 for each group). Domestic violence's most frequently reported outcomes are preterm delivery and low birthweight, both of which are the strongest correlates of mortality and morbidity. Several studies have shown that pregnant women with domestic violence during pregnancy were more likely to deliver low-birthweight and preterm neonates. However, there has been no consensus on associations between domestic violence and low-birthweight and preterm delivery. To examine the impact of domestic violence on birthweight stratified by preterm or full-term delivery, a population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted that linked four national databases in Taiwan. A total of 1,322 subjects associated with a report of domestic violence during pregnancy were compared with 485,981 subjects without any record of reported domestic violence. The percentage of low birthweight in the group exposed to domestic violence was significantly higher than in the unexposed group with full-term delivery (4.9% vs. 3.3%, p = 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that pregnant women exposed to domestic violence had an OR of 1.37 (95% CI 1.05, 1.79) for low birthweight in full-term delivery. However, domestic violence was not significantly associated with low birthweight in preterm delivery. The SrZrTiO 3 (SZT) thin film prepared by sol-gel process for the insulator of resistive random-access memory (RRAM) is presented. Al was embedded in the SZT thin film to enhance the switching characteristics. Compared with the pure SZT thin-film RRAM, the RRAM with the embedded Al in SZT thin film demonstrated outstanding device parameter improvements, such as a resistance ratio higher than 10 7 , lower operation voltage (V SET = -0.8 V and V RESET = 2.05 V), uniform film, and device stability of more than 10 5 s. The physical properties of the SZT thin film and the embedded-Al SZT thin-film RRAM devices were probed.

Introduction: Unsuccessful endocardial ablation for perimitral atrial flutter (AFL) could be attributed by the epicardial bridging., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the electrophysiological characteristics of epicardial breakthrough during catheter ablation of perimitral AFL., Materials and Methods: This retrospective study recruited 40 patients who received successful catheter ablation of perimitral AFL from January 2016 to June 2021. The patients were divided into two groups: group 1 ( n = 18) successful endocardial ablation, and group 2 ( n = 22) successful epicardial ablation following unsuccessful endocardial ablation owing to incomplete mitral block or unachievable termination AFL. The local electrogram (EGM) interval of coronary sinus (CS) duration perimitral AFL was measured before catheter ablation., Results: There was no significant difference in the baseline characteristics between the two groups. In group 2, 60% of successful epicardial ablation was performed in intra-CS ablation and 40% in VOM ethanol infusion. Group 2 patients had a longer EGM interval of distal CS than that in group 1 (CS1-2: 64.2 17.5 vs. 42.4 0.09 ms, P = 0.008, CS3-4: 57.13 19.4 vs. 43.8 7.5 ms; P = 0.001). The conduction velocity at successful site was slower in group 2 compared to group 1 (0.18 0.05 vs. 0.75 0.19 m/s, P = 0.040). The era of next-generation sequencing has increased the pace of gene discovery in the field of pediatric movement disorders. Following the identification of novel disease-causing genes, several studies have aimed to link the molecular and clinical aspects of these disorders. This perspective presents the developing stories of several childhood-onset movement disorders, including paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia, myoclonus-dystonia syndrome, and other monogenic dystonias. These stories illustrate how gene discovery helps focus the research efforts of scientists trying to understand the mechanisms of disease. The genetic diagnosis of these clinical syndromes also helps clarify the associated phenotypic spectra and aids the search for additional disease-causing genes. Collectively, the findings of previous studies have led to increased recognition of the role of the cerebellum in the physiology and pathophysiology of motor control-a common theme in many pediatric movement disorders. To fully exploit the genetic information garnered in the clinical and research arenas, it is crucial that corresponding multi-omics analyses and functional studies also be performed at scale. Background: A significant proportion of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients experience high on-treatment platelet reactivity (HPR) on clopidogrel-based dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)., Objectives: This study assessed key independent risk factors associated with significant HPR risk on clopidogrel, but not prasugrel, in the Switch Study cohort of 200 Taiwanese ACS patients who switched from clopidogrel to low-dose prasugrel for maintenance DAPT after PCI., Methods: Univariate analysis and stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis were conducted to identify key independent risk factors for HPR on clopidogrel, but not prasugrel., Results: A HANC [H: low hemoglobin (< 13 g/dL for men and < 12 g/dL for women); A: age ≥ 65 years; N: non-ST elevation myocardial infarction; C: chronic kidney disease as defined by estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min] risk stratification score was developed, and demonstrated optimal sensitivity and specificity at a cutoff score of ≥ 2. The HANC score compared favorably against the recently validated ABCD score in the full Switch Study cohort (n = 200), and the ABCD-GENE score in a genotyped cohort (n = 102)., Conclusions: The HANC score may serve to alert clinicians to patients at potentially higher HPR risk on clopidogrel, but not prasugrel. Further research to validate this score and assess its correlation with clinical outcomes is warranted.

Statement of Problem: Additively manufactured dental casts are gaining popularity as the digital workflow is adopted in dentistry. However, studies on their dimensional accuracy and stability under different storage conditions in the dental laboratory are lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the effects of different additive manufacturing processes and storage conditions on the dimensional accuracy and stability of 3D-printed dental casts., Material and Methods: A completely dentate maxillary typodont model was digitized 10 times with a dental laboratory laser scanner, and the standard tessellation language (STL) files were used to manufacture 3D-printed diagnostic casts with the digital light projection (DLP) 3D printer (Asiga MAX) and material jetting (MJ) 3D printer (ProJet 3510 DPPro). Twenty DLP-printed and 20 MJ-printed diagnostic casts were digitized within 24 hours of production. Subsequently, all 3D-printed diagnostic casts were stored for 3 months, either in closed laboratory boxes or in dental laboratory open-face plastic containers with direct exposure to full-spectrum balanced light. After 3-month storage, all 40 3D-printed casts were digitized again. All scanned files were compared with the corresponding STL files in a surface-matching software program. The dimensional accuracy was measured and compared by the root mean square (RMS, in μm). Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare RMS values among the variables, and the Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) test was used for post hoc multiple comparisons (α=.05)., Results: The casts produced from the DLP 3D printer had a significantly higher mean ±standard deviation RMS of 153.7 ±25.4 μm than those produced with the MJ 3D printer with RMS of 134.1 ±16.0 μm (P<.001). The storage condition (box storage versus light exposure) did not affect the accuracy of the DLP-printed casts (P=.615) or the MJ-printed casts (P=.999). When comparing all 3D-printed casts after 3-month storage, group DLP-3M-Lit had the highest mean ±standard deviation RMS of 163.0 ±26.5 μm, and group MJ-3M-Box had the lowest RMS of 132.8 ±16.9 μm. The DLP-printed casts stored under light exposure were significantly less accurate than the MJ-printed casts stored in the box (P=.048). DLP-printed casts stored under light exposure showed significant surface color change under visual inspection., Conclusions: The MJ 3D printer produced more accurate 3D-printed dental casts than the DLP 3D printer. After 3-month storage, the DLP-printed casts stored under light exposure were the least accurate, and the MJ-printed casts stored without light exposure were the most accurate. In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the physical fitness levels of active community-dwelling older adults. Moreover, we investigated the correlation of their (stratified by age and sex) fitness levels with handgrip strength (HGS). Comprehensive physical fitness tests, including sarcopenia screening, were conducted with a total of 2,130 older adults residing in a rural area of Taiwan. The 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 95th percentiles of age- and sex-specific physical fitness levels were determined. Furthermore, we identified the key parameters for assessing the physical fitness of older adults and performed stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Both men and women exhibited age-related decreases in all aspects of functional fitness, a trend indicating that older adults in Taiwan may lose their independence in the future. Furthermore, the regression analysis revealed that HGS was positively correlated with sex, body mass index, and the results of 30-s arm curl and back scratch tests but negatively correlated with age and the result of 8-foot up-and-go test. Our reference values for physical fitness may help assess the fitness levels of active community-dwelling older adults and design community-based health programs to prevent the early loss of independence in community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan., (© 2022. Prescribing a ketogenic diet (KD) is a century-old dietary intervention mainly used in the context of intractable epilepsy. The classic KD and its variants regained popularity in recent decades, and they are considered potentially beneficial in a variety of neurological conditions other than epilepsy. Many patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) have attempted diet modification for better control of their disease, although evidence thus far remains insufficient to recommend a specific diet for these patients. The results of 3 pilot clinical trials of KD therapy for MS, as well as several related studies, have been reported in recent years. The preliminary findings suggest that KD is safe, feasible, and potentially neuroprotective and disease-modifying for patients with MS. Research on corresponding rodent models has also lent support to the efficacy of KD in the prevention and treatment of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and toxin-induced inflammatory demyelinating conditions in the brain. Furthermore, the animal studies have yielded mechanistic insights into the molecular mechanisms of KD action in relevant situations, paving the way for precision nutrition. Herein we review and synthesize recent advances and also identify unresolved issues, such as the roles of adipokines and gut microbiota, in this field. Hopefully this panoramic view of current understanding can inform future research directions and clinical practice with regard to KD in MS and related conditions., (© The Author(s) 2022. Background: Soft tissue thickness (STT) influences esthetics, peri-implant, and periodontal health. Non-invasive methods of STT evaluation include cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) with Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) files and registration of DICOM files with an intraoral scan or Standard Tessellation Language (STL) files. This study compares three methodologies: bone sounding, DICOM data alone, and DICOM and STL registration to absolute histomorphologic values., Methods: Five human maxillas, including teeth numbers 6 to 11, provided 90 sites for analysis. For standardization, reference grooves were placed at the cervical margin and the long axis of each tooth. Direct measurements with a no. 25 K-file were completed at the facial soft tissues at 3.00, 5.00, and 7.00 mm from the apical marginal reference. Indirect measures were performed with implant planning software. Histological measurements were rendered with imaging software. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the three techniques for the differences from histologic measurements (α = 0.05)., Results: Seventy-two sites were included for final analysis. The overall mean histological STT (mSTT) was 0.73 ± 0.31 mm. Bone sounding overestimated mSTT, 0.22 ± 0.20 mm (P &lt; 0.001); whereas, DICOM alone underestimated mSTT, -0.23 ± 0.19 mm (P &lt; 0.001). DICOM and STL registration had non-statistically significant differences, -0.04 ± 0.21 mm (P = 0.429). Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of DICOM and STL registration achieved the highest agreement with histology (ICC: 0.74)., Conclusions: DICOM and STL file registration had the highest agreement with histological STT supporting the use of DICOM and STL registration for the evaluation of STT., (© 2022 American Academy of Periodontology.)

This technique report describes an alternative method to stabilize surgical templates throughout full-arch static computer-assisted implant surgery (FA s-CAIS). In FA s-CAIS, remaining teeth, mucosa, existing implants, custom occlusal device, bone, or any combination thereof, could be used as an initial positioning mechanism to position surgical templates. Different anchoring mechanisms are then used to stabilize the surgical templates during surgery. In this report, a novel design of surgical templates using remaining dentition and opposing occlusal surfaces as initial positioning mechanism followed by the combination of bone block fixation screw and stainless-steel beads as secondary anchoring mechanisms is described. Background/purpose: Pharmacogenetics is a potential driver of the "East Asian paradox," in which East Asian acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients receiving dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with clopidogrel following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) demonstrate higher levels of platelet reactivity on treatment than Western patients, yet have lower ischemic risk and higher bleeding risk at comparable doses. However, the impact of pharmacogenetics, particularly regarding CYP2C19 genotype, on the pharmacodynamics of P2Y12 inhibitors has not been extensively studied in Taiwanese ACS patients as yet., Methods: CYP2C19 genotyping and pharmacogenetic analysis was conducted on 102 subjects from the Switch Study, a multicenter, single-arm, open-label intervention study that examined the effects on platelet activity and clinical outcomes of switching from clopidogrel (75 mg daily) to low-dose prasugrel (3.75 mg daily) for maintenance DAPT after PCI in 203 Taiwanese ACS patients., Results: Genotyping results revealed that 43.1% were CYP2C19 extensive metabolizers (EM), while 56.9% were reduced metabolizers (RM). After switching to prasugrel, mean P2Y12 reaction units (PRU) values were significantly reduced in both EM and RM populations, while the proportion of high on-treatment platelet reactivity (HPR) patients significantly declined in RM patients. No increase in bleeding risk after switching was observed during follow-up. Multivariate analysis indicated that for RM patients, low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and low hemoglobin were associated with greater HPR risk on clopidogrel, but not after switching to prasugrel., Conclusion: Switching to low-dose prasugrel from clopidogrel reduced mean PRU levels and proportion of HPR patients, with more significant reduction in RM patients., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest ST, WCY, and LCC are employees of Daiichi Sankyo. An obturator with a hollow bulb can decrease the overall weight of the prosthesis, stress on the underlying tissues, and patient discomfort. Although many techniques and materials have been proposed in the literature for hollowing the obturator prosthesis, they are often time consuming and technique sensitive. This proposed technique used an open-source software program to hollow a digital design of a solid obturator base from a commercially available software in one single convenient step. The hollowing process allowed precise control of prosthesis thickness at the hollow space area for desirable hermetic seal and prosthesis strength., (© 2022 The Authors. Purpose: To determine if an electrocardiogram-based artificial intelligence system can identify pneumothorax prior to radiological examination., Methods: This is a single-center, retrospective, electrocardiogram-based artificial intelligence (AI) system study that included 107 ECGs from 98 pneumothorax patients. Seven patients received needle decompression due to tension pneumothorax, and the others received thoracostomy due to instability (respiratory rate ≥ 24 breaths/min; heart rate, < 60 beats/min or > 120 beats/min; hypotension; room air O 2 saturation, < 90%; and patient could not speak in whole sentences between breaths). Traumatic pneumothorax and bilateral pneumothorax were excluded. The ECGs of 132,127 patients presenting to the emergency department without pneumothorax were used as the control group. The development cohort included approximately 80% of the ECGs for training the deep learning model (DLM), and the other 20% of ECGs were used to validate the performance. A human-machine competition involving three physicians was conducted to assess the model performance., Results: The areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (AUCs) of the DLM in the validation cohort and competition set were 0.947 and 0.957, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of our DLM were 94.7% and 88.1% in the validation cohort, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of all physicians. Our DLM could also recognize the location of pneumothorax with 100% accuracy. Lead-specific analysis showed that lead I ECG made a major contribution, achieving an AUC of 0.930 (94.7% sensitivity, 86.0% specificity). The inclusion of the patient characteristics allowed our AI system to achieve an AUC of 0.994., Conclusion: The present AI system may assist the medical system in the early identification of pneumothorax through 12-lead ECG, and it performs as well with lead I ECG alone as with 12-lead ECG., (© 2022.
