Frequent oil spillages and the industrial discharge of organic solvents have not only caused severe environmental and ecological damage, but also create a risk of fire and explosion. Therefore, it is imperative, but also challenging, to find high-performance absorbent materials that are both effective and less flammable. Here we present a superior superhydrophobic sponge that exhibits excellent absorption performance through a combination of its superhydrophobicity, high porosity, and robust stability. More importantly, it inherits the intrinsic flame-retardant nature of the raw melamine sponge, and is thus expected to reduce the risk of fire and explosion when being used as an absorbent for flammable oils and organic compounds. Moreover, the fabrication of this sponge is easy to scale up, since it does not use a complicated process or sophisticated equipment. These characteristics make the sponge a much more competitive product than the commercial absorbent, nonwoven polypropylene fabric.

X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging is one of the most widely used diagnostic imaging techniques in the clinic, and has raised significant interest in recent years both in research and practice owing to its many advantages such as deep penetration depth, high resolution and facile image processing. Developing heavy metal-based CT contrast agents, especially heavy metal-containing nanoparticulate CT contrast agents, has become a key focus in research fields to address issues of clinical iodinated agents involving short circulation time, low contrast efficiency and potential renal toxicity. In this review, we summarize the development of ytterbium (Yb)-based CT contrast agents and highlight the design and applications of Yb-based nanoparticulate CT contrast agents. Yb has high atomic number and higher abundance in the earth's crust relative to Au, Ta and Bi, which have received much attention as a CT contrast agents. In particular, in contrast to these metal elements, as well as I, Yb has K-edge energy that is located just within the higher-intensity region of X-ray spectra, which can induce significant enhancement in the contrast efficiency. When encapsulated in nanoparticles, Yb can remain in the circulation for a long time. This long in vivo circulation time, combined with the proper K-edge energy and a large absorption cross-section of Yb in the near-infrared region, makes Yb-based nanoparticles particularly promising in angiography, 'multicolor' spectral CT imaging, and multimodal imaging. Finally, we also discuss the prospects and the challenges in the development of Yb-based CT contrast agents.

Imaging labels, therapeutic drugs, as well as many other agents can all be integrated into one nanoplatform to allow for molecular imaging and therapy. With this in mind, herein we report the first example of a tailor-made charge-conversional nanocomposite composed of mesoporous γ-AlO(OH) and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) via a simple and versatile method, and the obtained nanocomposite could be performed as a drug delivery carrier and applied for cell imaging. The nanocomposite (UCNPs-Al) was found to be able to efficiently transport DOX, a typical chemotherapeutic anticancer drug, into the cancer cell and release DOX from UCNPs-Al triggering by the mildly acidic environment. In vitro cell cytotoxicity assay verified that DOX-loaded nanocomposites (UCNPs-Al-DOX) exhibited greater cytotoxicity with respect to free DOX at the same concentrations, because of the increase in cell uptake of anti-cancer drug delivery vehicles mediated by the charge-conversional property. Moreover, the UCL emission from UCNPs and the red fluorescence of DOX allow the nanocomposite to track and monitor the drug delivery system simultaneously. These findings have opened up new insights into designing and producing the highly versatile multifunctional nanoparticles for simultaneous imaging and therapeutic applications.

The urgent need for sustainable development has forced material scientists to explore novel materials for next-generation energy storage devices through a green and facile strategy. In this context, yeast, which is a large group of single cell fungi widely distributed in nature environments, will be an ideal candidate for developing effective electrode materials with fascinating structures for high-performance supercapacitors. With this in mind, herein, we present the first example of creating three-dimensional (3D) interpenetrating macroporous carbon materials via a template-free method, using the green, renewable, and widespread yeast cells as the precursors. Remarkably, when the as-prepared materials are used as the electrode materials for supercapacitors, they exhibit outstanding performance with high specific capacitance of 330 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1), and good stability, even after 1000 charge/discharge cycles. The approach developed in this work provides a new view of making full use of sustainable resources endowed by nature, opening the avenue to designing and producing robust materials with great promising applications in high-performance energy-storage devices.

A new generation of photothermal therapeutic agents based on biopolymer dopamine-melanin colloidal nanospheres is described. Benefitting from their naturally wide distribution in humans, dopamine-melanin colloidal nanospheres exhibit robust biocompatibility and biodegradability, and provide up to 40% photothermal conversion efficiency. After administration, they can efficiently damage tumors at low power density and short irradiation time without damaging healthy tissues.

A simple, yet versatile strategy to prepare size-controlled and monodisperse carbon sub-micrometer spheres is developed based on the biomolecule dopamine. Unlike traditional carbon materials, the resulting carbon sub-micrometer spheres contain much less sp(3) carbon with high-level electroactive nitrogen. Moreover, metal-carbon hybrid sub-micrometer spheres can be easily obtained, and show highly promising catalytic properties in the oxygen-reduction reaction.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical tool. However, its applications for in situ detection of target molecules presented on diverse material surfaces have been hindered by difficulties in rapid fabricating SERS-active substrates on the surfaces of these materials through a simple, low-cost, and portable approach. Here, we demonstrate our attempt to address this issue by developing a facile and versatile method capable of in situ generating silver nanoparticle film (SNF) on the surfaces of both artificial and natural materials in a simple, cheap, practical, and disposable manner. Taking advantage of the high SERS enhancement ability of the prepared SNF, the proposed strategy can be used for in situ inspecting herbicide and pesticide residues on vegetables, as well as the abuse of antiseptic in aquaculture industry. Therefore, it opens new avenues for advancing the application prospects of SERS technique in the fields of food safety, drug security, as well as environment monitoring.

These environmental and safety issues emphasize the urgent need for materials that possess superior sorption capability and less flammability and thus can effectively and safely clean up the floating oils and water-insoluble organic compounds. Here we present the successful hydrophobic modification of the flame retardant melamine sponge with a commercial fluorosilicone, by using a facile one-step solvent-free approach and demonstrate that the resultant superhydrophobic sponge not only exhibits extraordinary absorption efficiency (including high capacity, superior selectivity, good recyclability, and simple recycling routes), but also retains excellent flame retardancy and robust stability. In comparison to conventional methods, which usually utilize massive organic solvents, the present approach does not involve any complicated process or sophisticated equipment nor generates any waste liquids, and thus is a more labor-saving, environment-friendly, energy-efficient and cost-effective strategy for the hydrophobic modification. Taking into account the critical role of hydrophobic porous materials, especially in the field of environmental remediation, the approach presented herein would be highly valuable for environmental remediation and industrial applications.

Near infrared light responsive nanoparticles can transfer the absorbed NIR optical energy into heat, offering a desirable platform for photoacoustic (PA) imaging guided photothermal therapy (PTT) of tumor. However, a key issue in exploiting this platform is to achieve optimal combination of PA imaging and PTT therapy in single nanoparticle. Here, we demonstrate that the biodegradable polydopamine nanoparticles (PDAs) are excellent PA imaging agent and highly efficient for PTT therapy, thus enabling the optimal combination of PA imaging and PTT therapy in single nanoparticle. Upon modification with arginine-glycine-aspartic-cysteine acid (RGDC) peptide, PDA-RGDC can successfully target tumor site. Moreover, PDA-RGDC can load a chemotherapy drug, doxorubicin (DOX), whose release can be triggered by near-infrared (NIR) light and pH dual-stimuli. The in vitro and in vivo experiments show that this platform can deliver anti-cancer drugs to target cells, release them intracellular upon NIR irradiation, and effectively eliminate tumors through chemo-photothermal synergistic therapeutic effect. Our results offer a way to harness PDA-based theranostic agents to achieve PA imaging-guided cancer therapy. Statement of Significance NIR-light adsorbed nanoparticles combing the advantage of PAI and PTT (TNP-PAI/PTT) are expected to play a significant role in the dawning era of personalized medicine. However, the reported Au-, Ag-, Cu-, Co-, and other metal based, carbon-based TNP-PAI/PTT suffer from complex multicomponent system and poor biocompatibility and biodegradability. To overcome this limitation, biocompatible polydopamine nanoparticles (PDAs), structurally similar to naturally occurring melanin, were designed as both PA imaging contrast agent and a chemo-thermotherapy therapy agent for tumor. RGDC peptide modified PDAs can improve the PA imaging and PTT efficiency and specific targeted deliver doxorubicin (DOX) to perinuclear region of tumor cells. Our finding may help the development of PDA-based nanoplatform for PA imaging-directed synergistic therapy of tumor in clinic.

Despite sustained effort over the years, the exploration of an effective strategy toward understanding the structure and properties of graphene oxide (GO) is still highly desirable. Herein, a facile route to revisit the structure of GO is demonstrated by elucidating its chemical-conversion process solely in the presence of ammonia. Such a strategy can contribute to settling some arguments in recent models of GO, and also offers a prerequisite to identify critical components that can act as ultraviolet absorbers (UVAs) in resulting dispersions of nitrogen-doped graphene sheets (NGSs). Inspired by this, for the first time, the performance of NGSs, serving as new-style UVAs, is investigated through directly assessing the effect of NGSs on the photofastness of azo dyes (Food Black). These studies reveal that, distinct from the common understanding, the as-prepared NGSs can dramatically enhance the photostability of Food Black under UV irradiation and exhibit greatly applied potential as a multifunctional UVA for new-generation inkjet inks that can simultaneously integrate the advantages of dye-based and pigment-based inks.

A facile strategy for the large-scale fabrication of Bi(2)S(3) nanodots is presented. Surface modification and control over the size of the nanodots is easily achieved. The as-prepared hydrophilic Bi(2)S(3) nanodots exhibit long in vivo circulation time and, more significantly, a contrast efficacy higher than that of the clinical iodinate agent without any adverse effect.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) as a powerful analytical tool has gained extensive attention. Despite of many efforts in the design of SERS substrates, it remains a grand challenge for creating a general substrate that can detect diverse target analytes. Herein, we report our attempt to address this issue by constructing a novel metal-graphene oxide nanostructured film as SERS substrate. Taking advantages of the high affinity of graphene oxide (GO) toward aromatic molecules and the SERS property of nanostructured metal, this structure exhibits great potential for diverse aromatic molecules sensing, which is demonstrated by using crystal violet (CV) with positive charge, amaranth with negative charge, and neutral phosphorus triphenyl (PPh(3)) as model molecules.

An effective dual-emission fluorescent silica nanoparticle-based probe has been constructed for rapid and ultrasensitive detection of Cu(2+). In this nanoprobe, a dye-doped silica core served as a reference signal, thus providing a built-in correction for environmental effects. A response dye was covalently grafted on the surface of the silica nanoparticles through a chelating reagent for Cu(2+). The fluorescence of the response dye could be selectively quenched in the presence of Cu(2+), accompanied by a visual orange-to-green color switch of the nanoprobe. The nanoprobe provided an effective platform for reliable detection of Cu(2+) with a detection limit as low as 10 nM, which is nearly 2 × 10(3) times lower than the maximum level (∼20 μM) of Cu(2+) in drinking water permitted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The high sensitivity was attributed to the strong chelation of Cu(2+) with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and a signal amplification effect. The nanoprobe constructed by this method was very stable, enabling the rapid detection of Cu(2+) in real water samples. Good linear correlations were obtained over the concentration range from 1 × 10(-7) to 8 × 10(-7) (R(2) = 0.99) with recoveries of 103.8-99.14% and 95.5-95.14% for industrial wastewater and lake water, respectively. Additionally, the long-wavelength emission of the response dye can avoid the interference of the autofluorescence of the biosystems, which facilitated their applications in monitoring Cu(2+) in cells. Furthermore, the nanoprobe showed a good reversibility; the fluorescence can be switched "off" and "on" by an addition of Cu(2+) and EDTA, respectively.

A simple one step solvothermal strategy using non-toxic and cost-effective precursors has been developed to prepare magnetite/reduced graphene oxide (MRGO) nanocomposites for removal of dye pollutants. Taking advantage of the combined benefits of graphene and magnetic nanoparticles, these MRGO nanocomposites exhibit excellent removal efficiency (over 91% for rhodamine B and over 94% for malachite green) and rapid separation from aqueous solution by an external magnetic field. Interestingly, the performance of the MRGO composites is strongly dependent on both the loading of Fe3O4 and the pH value. In addition, the adsorption behavior of this new adsorbent fits well with the Freundlich isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In further applications, real samples—including industrial waste water and lake water—have been treated using the MRGO composites. All the results demonstrate that the MRGO composites are effective adsorbents for removal of dye pollutants and thus could provide a new platform for dye decontamination.

We report here the development of Gd-doped ZnO quantum dots (QDs) as dual modal fluorescence and magnetic resonance imaging nanoprobes. They are fabricated in a simple, versatile and environmentally friendly method, not only decreasing the difficulty and complexity, but also avoiding the increase of particle's size brought about by silica coating procedure in the synthesis of nanoprobes reported previously. These nanoprobes, with exceptionally small size and enhanced fluorescence resulting from the Gd doping, can label successfully the HeLa cells in short time and present no evidence of toxicity or adverse affect on cell growth even at the concentration up to 1 mm. These results show that such nanoprobes have low toxicity, especially in comparison with the traditional PEGylated CdSe/ZnS or CdSe/CdS QDs. In MRI studies, they exert strong positive contrast effect with a large longitudinal relaxivity (r(1)) of water proton of 16 mm(-1) s(-1). Their capability of imaging HeLa cells with MRI implies that they have great potential as MRI contrast agents. Combining the high sensitivity of fluorescence imaging with high spatial resolution of MRI, We expect that the as-prepared Gd-doped ZnO QDs can provide a better reliability of the collected data and find promising applications in biological, medical and other fields. Nitroexplosives, such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) which is a leading example of nitroaromatic explosives, are causing wide concern. Motivated by the urgent demand for trace analysis of explosives, novel surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrates based upon highly ordered Au nanoparticles have been fabricated by a simple droplet evaporation method. It is noteworthy that an ethylhexadecyldimethyl ammonium bromide bilayer surrounding each individual nanoparticle not only is responsible for these periodic gap structures, but also tends to promote the adsorption of TNT on the composite NPs, thus resulting in a considerable increase of Raman signal. These desirable features endow the resulting SERS substrates with excellent enhancement ability and allow for a label-free detection of common plastic explosive materials even with a concentration as low as 10(-9) M. A facile and efficient strategy is described for the fabrication of soluble reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets. Different from the conventional strategies, the proposed method is based on the reduction of graphene oxide by an endogenous reducing agent from a most widely used and cost-effective solvent, without adding any other toxic reducing agent. Simultaneously, this solvent can serve as an effective stabilizer, avoiding complicated and time-consuming modification procedures. The as-prepared rGO sheets not only exhibit high reduction level and conductivity, but also can be well dispersed in many solvents. Of particular significance is that rGO sheets can be produced in large quantities. These advantages endow this proposed synthetic approach great potential applications in the construction of high-performance graphene-based devices at low cost, as demonstrated in our study of NO gas sensing.

As a single-atom-thick carbon material with high surface area and conductivity, graphene provides an ideal platform for designing composite nanomaterials for high-performance electrocatalytic or electrochemical devices. Herein, we demonstrated a facile strategy for controllably growing high-quality Prussian blue nanocubes on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (PBNCs/rGO), which represents a new type of graphene/transition metal complex heterostructure. The merit of this method is that the composite nanomaterials could be produced directly from GO in an in situ wet-chemical reaction, where the reduction of GO and the deposition of PBNCs occurred simultaneously. The obtained composite nanomaterials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques. It was found that uniform PBNCs with controlled size and good dispersion were directly grown on the surface of graphene nanosheets. Moreover, we also investigated the performance of PBNCs/rGO nanocomposites as amperometric sensor toward reduction of H(2)O(2). Such a sensor showed a rapid and highly sensitive response to H(2)O(2) with a low detection limit (45 nM), which might find promising applications in developing a new type of enzymeless biosensor.

A novel, gold-nanocluster-based fluorescent sensor for cyanide in aqueous solution, which is based on the cyanide etching-induced fluorescence quenching of gold nanoclusters, is reported. In addition to offering high selectivity due to the unique Elsner reaction between cyanide and the gold atoms of gold nanoclusters, this facile; environmentally friendly and cost-effective method provides high sensitivity&-With-zthis'sensor, the lowest concentration to quantify cyanide ions ccould be down to 200 x 10(-9) M, which. is approximately 14 times lower tharr-the..moxotim, level (2.7 x 10(-6) M) of cyanide in drinking water permitted by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, several real water samples spiked with cyanide, including local groundwater, tap water, pond water, and lake water, are analyzed using the sensing system, and experimental results show that this fluorescent sensor exhibits excellent recoveries (over 93%). This highly sensitive and selective detection of cyanide in food, soil, water, and biological samples.

A new and facile method to prepare large-area silver-coated silicon nanowire arrays for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based sensing is introduced. High-quality silicon nanowire arrays are prepared by a chemical etching method and used as a template for the generation of SERS-active silver-coated silicon nanowire arrays. The morphologies of the silicon nanowire arrays and the type of silver-plating solution are two key factors determining the magnitude of SERS signal enhancement and the sensitivity of detection; they are investigated in detail for the purpose of optimization.

Organic-inorganic hybrid nanofibers are successfully synthesized by incorporating 3,3 ',5,5 '-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and H2PtCl6 at room temperature. The morphology and size can be simply controlled by tuning the molar ratio and initial concentration of reactants. A possible formation mechanism was suggested on the basis of the experimental results. The optical properties were investigated and the as-obtained product displays a strong fluorescence emission at room temperature that may be promising for applications in the fabrication of photoelectric materials. Ordered porous metal nanomaterials have current and future potential applications, for example, as catalysts, as photonic crystals, as sensors, as porous electrodes, as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), in separation technology, and in other emerging nanotechnologies. Methods for creating such materials are commonly characterized as "templating", a technique that involves first the creation of a sacrificial template with a specific porous structure, followed by the filling of these pores with desired metal materials and finally the removal of the starting template, leaving behind a metal replica of the original template. From the viewpoint of practical applications, ordered metal nanostructures with hierarchical porosity, namely, macropores in combination with micropores or mesopores, are of particular interest because macropores allow large guest molecules to access and an efficient mass transport through the porous structures is enabled while the micropores or mesopores enhance the selectivity and the surface area of the metal nanostructures. For this objective, colloidal crystals (or artificial opals) consisting of three-dimensional (3D) long-range ordered arrays of silica or polymer microspheres are ideal starting templates. However, with respect to the colloidal crystal templating strategies for production of ordered porous metal nanostructures, there are two challenging questions for materials scientists: (1) how to uniformly and controllably fill the interstitial space of the colloidal crystal templates and (2) how to generate ordered composite metal nanostructures with hierarchical porosity. This Account reports on recent work in the development and applications of ordered macroporous bimetallic nanostructures in our laboratories. A series of strategies have been explored to address the challenges in colloidal crystal template techniques. By rationally tailoring experimental parameters, we could readily and selectively design different types of ordered bimetallic nanostructures with hierarchical porosity by using a general template technique. The applications of the resulting nanostructures in catalysis and as substrates for SERS are described. Taking the ordered porous Au/Pt nanostructures as examples for applications as catalysts, the experimental results show that both the ordered hollow Au/Pt nanostructure and the ordered macroporous Au/Pt nanostructure exhibit high catalytic ability due to their special structural characteristics, and their catalytic activity is component-dependent. As for SERS applications, primary experimental results show that these ordered macroporous Au/Ag nanostructured films are highly desirable for detection of DNA bases by the SERS technique in terms of a high Raman intensity enhancement, good stability, and reproducibility, suggesting that these nanostructures may find applications in the rapid detection of DNA and DNA fragments.

We report a facile and environmentally friendly strategy for high-yield synthesis of highly monodisperse gold nanoparticles with urchin-like shape. A simple protein, gelatin, was first used for the control over shape and orientation of the gold nanoparticles. These nanoparticles, ready to use for biological systems, are promising in the optical imaging-based disease diagnostics and therapy because of their tunable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity.

The synthesis of strongly luminescing semiconductor nanocrystals reported is based on a wet-chemical approach. The use of aqueous solutions and the avoiding of dangerous and unstable precursors make this synthetic approach to be easily up-scaleable. The reaction yields are approaching gram amounts of the dried product and are limited solely by the laboratory facilities and thus may be further increased by using industrial equipments. The nanocrystals obtained by this route are strongly luminescing and suitable for various assembling procedures allowing the creation of core-shell spherical and thin-film composites, that are promising for photonic and optoelectronic applications. New assembly procedures allowing template-based formations of different types of metal-dielectric and porous metal nanostructures are presented.

A label-free fluorescence assay for rapid and sensitive detection of heparin (Hep) or chondroitin sulfate (CS) was developed by guanidine-terminated poly (amidoanime) (PAMAM-Gu(+)) dendrimers induced aggregation of graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The fluorescence of GQDs was obviously quenched after mixing with PAMAM-Gu(+). However, the addition of highly negatively charged Hep or CS into the fluorescence sensing system resulted in the fluorescence recovery. Because the multi-positively charged PAMAM-Gu(+) would prefer to bind with highly negatively charged Hep or CS, resulting in the deaggregation of GQDs. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the recovery of fluorescence intensity ratio I/I0 (I0 and I were the fluorescence intensity of the sensing system in the absence or presence of target analytes, respectively) was proportional to the concentration of target analytes in the range of 0.04-1.6 μg mL(-1) for Hep and 0.1-2.5 μg mL(-1) for CS. In addition, this method afforded high sensitivity with the detection limit as low as 0.02 μg mL(-1) and 0.05 μg mL(-1) for Hep and CS, respectively. All results suggested that the fluorescence turn-on method could be successfully employed for sensitive and selective detection of heparin analogs.

A novel multifunctional envelope-type mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MEMSN) system combining the merits of pH-responsiveness, non-toxicity and biological specificity, is demonstrated for drug delivery and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This system is constructed by immobilizing acetals on the surface of mesoporous silica, and then coupling to ultra small lanthanide doped upconverting nanoparticle, which act as a gate keeper. The anticancer drug DOX is thus locked in the pores, and its burst release can be achieved under acidic environment on account of the hydrolyzation reactions of acetals. The nanogated drug release system is highly efficacious for cancer therapy both in vitro and in vivo. Importantly, the nanocomposite could be harmlessly metabolized and degraded into apparently non-toxic products within a few days. The nanoscale effect of the system allows for passive tumor targeting and increased tumor accumulation of the probes via the enhanced permeation and retention (EPR) effect, which is visualized by MRI in vivo. Therefore, such nanosystem should be of great significance in the future development of highly efficient and tumor targeted drug delivery vehicles for cancer chemotherapy.

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have been extensively investigated as contrast and dose enhancing agents. Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3)-NPs have recently been investigated as contrast agents in radiology. In this study the dose enhancing effects of Bi2S3-NPs on radiated mouse PC3 prostate and B16 melanoma cells were examined. Equimolar concentrations of both Au and Bi2S3-NPs displayed equal dose enhancement with B16 cells, while the latter provided higher values with PC3 cells. At, equimolar concentrations there are less Bi atoms compared to Au in their respective NPs. Both NPs at comparable concentrations (0-1 mM) elicited similar cytotoxicity in PC3 mouse prostate cells. This study demonstrates that the less expensive Bi2S3 NPs are a viable alternative to Au NPs as a dose enhancing agent in clinical applications.

Shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanostructures has opened many new possibilities to design ideal building blocks for future nanodevices. In this work, new types of monodisperse silver nanoplates with complex shapes, namely, a disklike shape and flowerlike shapes, were controllably synthesized in high yield by reducing [Ag(NH3)2]+ with ascorbic acid in the presence of silver seed at room temperature. Unlike previous methods for synthesizing the silver nanoplates in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles, the use of the precursor [Ag(NH3)2]+, other than Ag+, provides a flexible strategy to control the procession of the reduction reaction in a mild way. We describe the small-biomolecule (glycyl glycine)-directed synthesis of single-crystalline silver nanoplates, and different experimental conditions have been explored for a more thorough understanding of the growth mechanism. The yield of silver nanoplates relative to the total number of nanoparticles formed was as high as ∼80%. It was found that the ratio of glycyl glycine to AgNO3 was the key to forming Ag nanoplates.

This article reports the designed preparation of two different kinds of novel porous metal nanostructured films, namely, an ordered macroporous Au/Ag nanostructured film and an ordered hollow Au/Ag nanostructured film. Different from previous reports, the presently proposed method can be conveniently used to control film structures by simply varying the experimental conditions. The morphology of these films has been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and their performance as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates has been evaluated by using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a probe molecule. We show that such porous nanostructured films consisting of larger interconnected aggregates are highly desirable as SERS substrates in terms of high Raman intensity enhancement, excellent stability, and reproducibility. The interconnected nanostructured aggregate, long-range ordering porosity, and nanoscale roughness are important factors responsible for this large SERS enhancement ability.

A straightforward combination of the seeding growth method and replacement reaction allowed for the formation of a nanorattle composed of a gold core and Pt/Ag shell. The size, structure, and composition of the Pt/Ag rattle-type nanostructure were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry.

To alleviate the kinetic barriers associated with ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) and OER (oxygen evolution reaction) in electrochemical systems, efficient nonprecious electrocatalysts are urgently required. Here we report a facile soft-template mediated approach for fabrication of nanostructured cobalt-iron double sulfides that are covalently entrapped in nitrogen-doped mesoporous graphitic carbon (Co0.5Fe0.5S@N-MC). Notably, with a positive half-wave potential (0.808 V) and a high diffusion-limiting current density, the composite material delivers unprecedentedly striking ORR electrocatalytic activity among recently reported nonprecious late transition metal chalcogenide materials in alkaline medium. Various characterization techniques, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, are conducted to elucidate the correlation between structural features and catalytic activities of the composite. Moderate substitution and well-dispersion of iron in bimetallic sulfide composites are believed to have positive effect on the adsorption and activation of oxygen-containing species, thus leading to conspicuous ORR and OER catalytic enhancement compared to their monometallic counterparts. Besides, the covalent bridge between active sulfide particles and mesoporous carbon shells provides facile pathways for electron and mass transport. Beneficially, the intimate coupling interaction renders prolonged electrocatalytic performances to the composite. Our results may possibly lend a new impetus to the rational design of bi- or multimetallic sulfides encapsulated in porous carbon with improved performance for electrocatalysis and energy storage applications.

We report an alternative procedure to incorporate gold nanoparticles into 3D ordered colloidal crystal film. The size of gold nanoparticles within the films can be controlled from about 10 nm to about 60 nm by simply varying the gold plating time. The application of the as-prepared films in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is investigated by using Rhodamine 6G (R6G) as probe molecules. It is found that the resultant gold-coated 3D ordered colloidal crystal films can be used as SERS substrates, exhibiting excellent enhancement ability.

This paper reports an aggregation-based method for the fabrication of composite Au/Ag nanoshells with tunable thickness and surface roughness. It is found that the resultant roughened composite Au/Ag nanoshells can attract each other spontaneously to form films at the air−water interface. Importantly, such films can be transferred onto the solid substrates without being destroyed and show excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement ability. Their strong enhancement ability may stem from the unique two-dimensional structure itself.

A highly phosphorescent molecular Au(I) cluster capable of rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of cyanide has been successfully fabricated. The origin of the outstanding sensing performance of the molecular Au(I) cluster toward cyanide is justified by X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses. The response mechanism employed with the molecular Au(I) cluster and the cost-effectiveness in cyanide detection affords several key sensor features, making this molecular Au(I) cluster-based sensor unique compared to other cyanide sensing schemes. Importantly, by exploring the phosphorescent properties of the molecular Au(I) cluster in solid state, we demonstrate the first example of the molecular gold(I) cluster-based macroporous sensing film for colorimetric detection of cyanide in complex samples, including red wine, coffee, juice, and soil. Remarkably, the as-prepared sensing film inherits the sensing ability of the molecular Au(I) cluster, and offers a high mechanical flexibility and novel opportunities for real-time monitoring cyanide release in cassava manufacturing.

Self-organization of BaF2 single crystal film under a compressed monolayer of behenic acid (BA) has been investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental results indicated the (100)-oriented single crystal film of BaF2 was formed under the BA monolayer. The relation between the BaF2 single crystal and the monolayer was discussed.

Selective crystallization of BaF2 crystals under a compressed Langmuir monolayer of behenic acid [CH3(CH2)20COOH] has been studied by using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. It was found that, in the absence of a monolayer, three kinds of crystals (Ba2ClF3, BaClF, and BaF2) can be obtained by mixing BaCl2 with a NH4F solution. However, in the presence of the monolayer of behenic acid, only BaF2 crystals appear at the monolayer−subphase interface and crystals have a special crystal face (100). During this process of crystallization, the monolayer plays a very important role and acts as a template that can preferentially select a special crystal and a special crystal face. The above results can be explained in terms of a specific molecular interaction between ions and the headgroups of the monolayer and specific electrostatic, geometric, and stereochemical interactions at the organic−inorganic interface.

α-Fe2O3 nanoparticulate films could be formed on the surface of α-Fe2O3 hydrosol after aging of the hydrosol or by compressing of the nanoparticles on the sol surface, in which a three-dimensional ordered structure was constructed by the Langmuir−Blodgett technique and colloid chemical methods. The structure of the LB film was characterized by AFM, TEM, XPS, and UV−vis spectra and small-angle X-ray diffraction. Gas-sensing measurement shows that the LB film has good sensitivity to alcohols at room temperature.
