Adiaspiromycosis is a pulmonary infection caused by the soil fungi, Emmonsia crescens and E. parva. It primarily affects small mammals and can range from an asymptomatic condition to fatal disseminated disease. We detected a granuloma containing fungal spherules, which were morphologically consistent with the adiaspores of E. crescens in the lungs of a female Hokkaido sika deer. This is the first reported case of adiaspiromycosis involving a cervid in the world.

We report an atypical mycobacterial infection in an Indian flap-shelled turtle, Lissemys punctata punctata, that died in an aquarium in Japan. At necropsy, the turtle showed multiple white nodules on the capsular surface and parenchyma of various organs such as the liver, spleen, intestine, and lung. Histologically, granulomatous inflammation surrounding a central zone of necrosis was observed. Sections stained by the Ziehl-Neelsen method revealed numerous acid-fast bacilli in the cytoplasm of macrophages and in the central area of necrosis. The organisms were identified as a mycobacterial species by PCR and nucleotide sequence analysis and revealed 98-100% homology to M. ulcerans. This is, to our knowledge, the first report of mycobacteriosis due to M. ulcerans in a turtle.

The endotheliotropism of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) leads to encephalomyelitis secondary to vasculitis and thrombosis in the infected horse central nervous system (CNS). To identify the host factors involved in EHV-1 infection of CNS endothelial cells, we performed functional cloning using an equine brain microvascular endothelial cell cDNA library. Exogenous expression of equine major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I heavy chain genes conferred susceptibility to EHV-1 infection in mouse NIH3T3 cells, which are not naturally susceptible to EHV-1 infection. Equine MHC class I molecules bound to EHV-1 glycoprotein D (gD), and both anti-gD antibodies and a soluble form of gD blocked viral entry into NIH3T3 cells stably expressing the equine MHC class I heavy chain gene (3T3-A68 cells). Treatment with an anti-equine MHC class I monoclonal antibody blocked EHV-1 entry into 3T3-A68 cells, equine dermis (E. Derm) cells and equine brain microvascular endothelial cells. In addition, inhibition of cell surface expression of MHC class I molecules in E. Derm cells drastically reduced their susceptibility to EHV-1 infection. These results suggest that equine MHC class I is a functional gD receptor that plays a pivotal role in EHV-1 entry into equine cells.

An 85-year-old woman had been suffering from left oculomotor palsy for 5 years and developed left facial palsy 6 months previous to presenting. She was diagnosed with a giant aneurysm of the left internal carotid artery in the cavernous portion extending into the middle cranial fossa. The left internal carotid artery was sacrificed by endovascular technique following balloon occlusion test. The internal carotid artery giant aneurysm became larger 2 years after endovascular occlusion. In the second operation, the distal internal carotid artery and the ophthalmic artery were occluded by clipping and then the giant aneurysm was decompressed by opening the aneurysm wall and removing a clot. Our results suggest that giant aneurysms located near the collateral feeding vessel following proximal parent vessel occlusion should be trapped by clipping.

Ectopic bone formation in the left atrioventricular valves and cardiac fibroskeleton, with systemic circulatory disturbance, is reported in a 4-year-old crossbred heavy horse. Microscopically, there was fibrosis, chondral metaplasia and mature bone, with bone marrow within the left atrioventricular cusps and in the annuli of the aortic and right atrioventricular valves.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) causes fetal brain malformations in ruminants when the fetuses are infected transplacentally in mid-pregnancy. In both cytopathic and non-cytopatic virus infections, viral lytic infection in actively replicating cells and interruption of vascular integrity have been suggested as the pathogenesis, but functional disturbance of infected neural developing cells has been unclear. In this study, we examined the effect of infection with non-cytopathic BVDV2 on the differentiation of neural stem/precursor cells isolated from the bovine fetus. In the process of differentiation to three types of neural cells, neurons, astrocytes and oligo-dendrocytes, virus infection significantly and selectively inhibited the differentiation of neural stem/precursor cells into the astrocytic lineage. This inhibition is possibly important for the pathogenesis of congenital brain malformations associated with non-cytopathic BVDV infection.

At necropsy, an 11-year-old Japanese Black cow with anemia, leukocytopenia, and progressive hind limb ataxia had marked diffuse splenomegaly and multiple masses in the thoracic vertebrae. Histologically, neoplastic erythrophagocytic histiocytes were in the splenic red pulp, vertebral masses, and blood vessels of the liver and lungs. The spinal cord was compressed by the vertebral masses. Clinicopathological, macroscopic, and histologic findings were consistent with hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma. Vertebral involvement with spinal cord compression and resultant hind limb ataxia is an unusual presentation for this tumor, which has been described mainly in dogs and cats.

Objective—To evaluate the histologic diversity of epidermal laminae in hooves from horses without clinical signs of laminitis. Sample Population—Formalin-fixed samples of stratum internum obtained from the mid region of the dorsal aspect of the hoof wall from the forelimbs of 35Thoroughbred cadavers (including foals [n = 9], yearlings [5], 2 year olds [6], racing horses [5], and mares [10]). Procedures—Paraffin-embedded laminar tissues were stained with H&E for the evaluation of architectural variety of primary epidermal laminae (PEL) and secondary epidermal laminae (SEL). For detection of cytokeratin (CK) expression in epidermal laminae, immunohisto-chemical staining was performed by use of anti-CK14 and anti-CK8.12 antibodies. Results—The morphology of the PEL, SEL, and tips of PEL was classified into 3, 5, and 3 patterns, respectively. Differences in the predominant type of SEL depended on their location with respect to the laminar interface. In SEL attached to the sides of PEL, the basal cells were immunoreactive to CK14 and CK8.12, which was interpreted as a normal pattern. In some SEL at the tips of PEL, the suprabasal cells expressed CK14, CK8.12, or both, which constituted a hyperplastic pattern. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—The histologic diversity of epidermal laminae from hooves of Thoroughbreds was attributable to the combined morphology of PEL and SEL. Detection of hyperplastic changes in the laminar interface does not justify a diagnosis of laminitis because such changes can develop independent of clinical disease. The classification system used here should aid investigators in making a more accurate histologic evaluation of laminae.

Histopathological examination of clinically long-standing lesions with durations of one year or more in the extremities of two cattle revealed the presence of sarcomas with distant metastases. In case 1, neoplastic cells were fusiform to pleomorphic, stained for no specific differentiation markers, and diagnosed as undifferentiated sarcoma. Neoplastic growth in case 2 was composed of spindle to histiocytoid cells and a significant number of multinucleated giant cells, both of which were immunoreactive to histiocyte markers, and diagnosed as giant cell malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Neoplastic cells of both cases were immunohistochemically positive for nitric oxide-related antigens, which were recognized as markers of inflammation-induced carcinogenesis in human and laboratory animals.

Epithelioid cells are found in lymph nodes in cases of metastatic carcinoma; however, epithelioid cells with benign features have also been discovered incidentally in lymph nodes. Epithelioid cells were observed in mediastinal lymph nodes of cattle without cancer during routine diagnostic necropsy. To explain this finding, the authors evaluated the prevalence and histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features retrospectively using mediastinal lymph nodes from 110 cattle and found that 66 of the lymph nodes contained epithelioid cells. In all 66 nodes, most of the epithelioid cells were individual or aggregated in nodal sinuses; in 21 nodes, some epithelioid cells formed tubular structures. The individual and aggregated epithelioid cells were mostly considered to be mesothelial in origin by immunohistochemical and ultrastructural examination; presumably, they entered the lymph nodes via lymphatic vessels, because they were found in afferent lymphatic vessels and nodal sinuses. Although the presence of epithelioid cells in lymph nodes prompts suspicion of metastatic carcinoma, the epithelioid cells in these bovine lymph nodes did not disrupt nodal architecture, lacked atypia or mitotic figures, and did not invade nodal parenchyma.

Canine thyroid C-cell carcinomas (CTCCs) are malignant tumors derived from calcitonin-producing C-cells of the thyroid gland. This study aimed to investigate the histological diversity of CTCCs from the viewpoint of stroma variations and to investigate their components by histological and immunohistochemical analyses including semiquantitative analysis of the density of microvessels (MVs) and α-SMA-positive cell count. Moreover, we examined whether the variations correlated with the Ki-67 index and expressions of glucose transporter 1 (GLUT-1) and monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT-1). Three stroma types (reticular, R, nest, N, and trabecular, T) were observed in CTCCs, and 21 cases were divided into 3 variations based on their combinations: mixed R and N (R/N) (n=7), simple N (n=7) and mixed T and N (T/N) (n=7). Immunohistochemically, stroma types depended on morphological features of α-SMA/fibronectin/laminin/collagen type IV-positive stroma cells. The density of MVs in R/N tended to be highest, and the density of those in N was significantly higher than the density of those in T/N (P=0.028). The α-SMA-positive cell count for N tended to be the lowest among the 3 variations. The Ki-67 index for R/N was significantly higher than those of the other variations (vs. N, P=0.007; vs. T/N, P=0.03), and that for T/N tended to be higher than that for N. Although there were no significant differences, GLUT-1 and MCT-1 expressions tended to be low in N. We concluded that stroma variations reflect tumor cell proliferation and expressions of GLUT-1 and MCT-1 in CTCCs.

Canine ovarian tumors (epithelial tumor, sex-cord stromal tumor, germ cell tumor) classifying into 9 histological types were examined immunohistochemically using placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP), cytokeratin7 (CK7), desmin, S100, AE1/AE3, inhibin alpha, vimentin, and alfa feto-protein (AFP). The papillary and tubular types observed in epithelial tumors were immunoreactive for desmin and AE1/AE3. The papillary type was also immunoreactive for PLAP and CK7. The solid type, nest type, cord type, palisade type, cystic type and spindle type, which were observed in sex-cord stromal tumors, showed a positive immunoreaction for S100 but little or no positive immunoreaction for inhibin alpha with an exception of positive result in the palisade type. Most of the sex-cord stromal tumors were AE1/AE3-positive except for the palisade type. In the cobblestone type observed in germ cell tumors, only vimentin and AFP were positive. The present study elucidated the detailed histological and immunohistochemical characteristics of canine ovarian tumors.

To clarify the immunohistochemical characteristics of canine ovarian cysts, 109 canine ovarian cysts (57 cysts of subsurface epithelial structures: SES, 26 graafian follicle cysts, 12 cystic rete ovarii and 14 cysts difficult to classify morphologically) were examined regarding their lining cells immunohistochemically using antibodies against placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP), S100, inhibin alpha, desmin and AE1/AE3. Both cysts of SES and cystic rete ovarii had a positive immunoreaction to desmin and AE1/AE3, whereas all cysts all but graafian follicle cysts were negative for inhibin alpha. PLAP-positive immunoreaction was observed only in cysts of SES. Graafian follicle cysts had a positive immunoreaction to inhibin alpha, but were negative for PLAP, desmin and AE1/AE3. Fourteen cysts were difficult to classify morphologically because these cysts had single-squamous lining cells and lacked other morphological characteristics. However, these unclassified cysts were immunohistochemically divided into two groups, including positive and negative cysts, by the reactivity of PLAP. The PLAP-positive cysts were considered large cysts of SES. These results suggest that PLAP was a useful marker for classification of cysts of SES, although cysts originating from SES are not always positive for this antigen.

Neural involvement following infections of influenza viruses can be serious. The neural transport of influenza viruses from the periphery to the central nervous system has been indicated by using mouse models. However, no direct evidence for neuronal infection has been obtainedin vitroand the mechanisms of neural transmission of influenza viruses have not been reported. In this study, the transneural transmission of a neurotropic influenza A virus was examined using compartmentalized cultures of neurons from mouse dorsal root ganglia, and the results were compared with those obtained using the pseudorabies virus, a virus with well-established neurotransmission. Both viruses reached the cell bodies of the neurons via the axons. This is the first report on axonal transport of influenza A virusin vitro. In addition, the role of the cytoskeleton (microtubules, microfilaments and intermediate filaments) in the neural transmission of influenza virus was investigated by conducting cytoskeletal perturbation experiments. The results indicated that the transport of avian influenza A virus in the neurons was independent of microtubule integrity but was dependent on the integrity of intermediate filaments, whereas pseudorabies virus needed both for neural spread.

Four H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses and an avirulent reassortant H5N1 virus were tested for their pathogenicity in domestic ducks. A/chicken/Yamaguchi/7/04 (H5N1) (Ck/Yamaguchi/04) isolated from a dead bird during the HPAI outbreak in Japan and A/duck/Yokohama/aq-10/03 (H5N1) (Dk/Yokohama/03) isolated from duck meat at a quarantine inspection for importation from China replicated in multiple organs including the brain of ducks. The ducks infected with Ck/Yamaguchi/04 did not show any clinical signs, while those infected with Dk/Yokohama/03 showed neurological signs. The ducks infected either with A/Hong Kong/483/97 (H5N1) or A/tern/South Africa/61 (H5N3), or with an avirulent H5N1 reassortant, did not show any clinical signs. Virus-specific antibodies were detected in the sera of the ducks infected with each of the five strains tested, indicating that all of the viral strains infected and replicated in the birds. Dk/Yokohama/03 grew in multiple organs more rapidly than did Ck/Yamaguchi/04. Considerable titers of virus were detected in the brain of the ducks infected with Dk/Yokohama/03 and these birds showed neurological signs. The present results demonstrate that the pathogenicity of influenza viruses for ducks does not correlate with that for chickens and that replication of the virus in the brain is critical for ducks to show neurological signs.

o-, m-, p-Phenylenediamines having 2,3,4-trihydroxy, 3,4 dihydroxy, and 4-hydroxybenzoyl moieties were prepared and their inhibitory activities were measured against topoisomerase I and II. More hydroxy groups on two aromatic rings increased the activities. Bis(trihydroxybenzoyl)-o-phenylenediamide showed IC50=0.90 and 0.09 μM against topoisomerase I and II, respectively. Compounds with hydroxy groups protected by acetyl moiety still had the activities. Less hydroxy groups decreased their activities. Benzothiazole derivatives also indicated the activities.

Intranasally inoculated neurotropic influenza viruses in mice infect not only the respiratory tract but also the central nervous system (CNS), mainly the brain stem. 26 , 34 Previous studies suggested that the route of invasion of virus into the CNS was via the peripheral nervous system, especially the vagus nerve. To evaluate the transvagal transmission of the virus, we intranasally inoculated unilaterally vagectomized mice with a virulent influenza virus (strain 24a5b) and examined the distribution of the viral protein and genome by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization over time. An asymmetric distribution of viral antigens was observed between vagal (nodose) ganglia: viral antigen was detected in the vagal ganglion of the vagectomized side 2 days later than in the vagal ganglion of the intact side. The virus was apparently transported from the respiratory mucosa to the CNS directly and decussately via the vagus nerve and centrifugally to the vagal ganglion of the vagectomized side. The results of this study, thus, demonstrate that neurotropic influenza virus travels to the CNS mainly via the vagus nerve.

One-hundred thirty-seven BALB/c mice were intranasally inoculated with neurotropic avian influenza A virus (H5N3). Thirty-nine of these mice died within 16 days post-inoculation (PID) and 98 of the mice recovered from the infection. To investigate whether viral antigens and genomes persist in the central nervous system (CNS) of recovered mice, immunohistochemistry and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) methods were performed. Histopathologically, mild interstitial pneumonia and non-suppurative encephalomyelitis restricted to the basal part of the frontal lobe of the cerebrum, brain stem and thoracic spinal cord were observed in BALB/c mice until 40 PID. Small amounts of viral antigens were detected in the brain and spinal cord and some viral RNA segments (NA, NP, M, PA, HA, NS, PB1) were intermittently detected in the CNS until 48 PID. Immunosuppression of these mice by dexamethazone (DEX) treatment did not increase the frequency of detection of the lesions, viral antigens or genomes. These findings suggest that viral genomes of neurovirulent influenza virus persist with restricted transcriptive activity in the CNS of the mice even after clinical recovery from the infection.

A large primary retroperitoneal sublumbar neoplasm was identified in an 11-year-old Holstein cow, with metastases to the lungs, kidneys and lymph nodes. The tumour cells proliferated in a characteristic endocrine pattern, were argyrophilic and positive for neuron-specific enolase, and had membrane-bounded intracytoplasmic granules. In addition, the cells were occasionally positive for cytokeratin and had desmosome-like intercellular junctions. The primary tumour mass was diagnosed as a malignant paraganglial tumour of the aortico-sympathetic ganglion (organ of Zuckerkandl), and was considered to contain primitive cells with epithelial differentiation.

Oligodendrocytes and myelin in the corpus callosum of black tremor and normal hamsters aged 3, 7, and 14 weeks were ultrastructurally examined to determine myelination index (ratio of myelin thickness/diameter of axon), percentage of naked axons, and proportions of oligodendroglial subtypes (light, medium and dark). The mutant hamsters were remarkably hypomyelinated, with a low myelination index and a high proportion of naked axons, but the proportions of the three subtypes in the mutants were comparable with those of normal hamsters at 3 weeks of age, suggesting the low myelinogenetic activity of oligodendrocytes in the mutant. Furthermore, oligodendrocytes of the mutant hamsters appeared to mature earlier than those of age-matched controls, since the proportions of dark inactive oligodendrocytes at 7 and 14 weeks of ages were higher than those of the control hamsters.

This report documents an unusual case of congenital foregut cyst with dysphagia and stridor in a Thoroughbred foal. Histologically, the bilocular cyst, near the junction of larynx and trachea, had an epithelial lining of bronchogenic and esophageal origin. Concomitant malformation of the laryngeal muscles and cartilage resulted in a combination of anomalies that have not been reported in the human or veterinary literature.

Object. Although the spontaneous occurrence of an unruptured vertebral artery (VA) dissection has increasingly been recognized as a relatively common cause of stroke, and the clinical aspects of this lesion have gradually been determined, its natural course remains obscure. The main goal of this study was to clarify the management protocol for this condition by examining serial angiographic changes in patients with unruptured VA dissections.Methods. Seventeen patients with unruptured VA dissections, including 13 men and four women, were clinically and angiographically examined between 1993 and 1998. All patients were observed using serial angiography studies. The initial angiography examinations most frequently revealed stenotic lesions (appearance of a pearl-andstring sign or string sign) in eight (47.1%) of 17 cases. In 15 cases (88.2%), changes in the lesions were evident on follow-up angiography studies. Stenotic lesions resulted in occlusion in four cases, normalization in three, and subsequent formation of an aneurysm in one case, which was treated successfully by proximal occlusion of the affected vessel performed using a detachable balloon. Occluded lesions, which were initially observed in three patients, recanalized in two patients and remained unchanged in one patient. Fusiform dilation alone was demonstrated in three patients during the initial angiography session; these lesions became normalized or were unchanged on follow-up studies. Saccular aneurysms were observed in two patients. In one of these cases, proximal ligation of the parent artery was successfully performed because of subsequent aneurysm enlargement. A double lumen, which appeared in one patient with an extradural VA dissection, became occluded. Magnetic resonance T2-weighted imaging studies revealed infarction corresponding to the posterior circulation in seven cases. During long-term observation in this series, good or excellent recovery was obtained in 14 (87.5%) of 16 patients, and moderate or severe disability in two (12.5%); one patient was lost to follow up after the second angiography study.Conclusions. A follow-up angiography study must be performed during the early stage (within approximately 3 weeks after onset of symptoms) to confirm the formation or enlargement of an aneurysm, because such conditions may be amenable to surgical treatment. Unruptured VA dissection could otherwise be treated and followed conservatively. Although the majority of dissected lesions seem likely to stabilize within a few months, as evidenced on angiography, in some cases a longer observation period is required.

Background: In various drug-induced gastric mucosal injuries, it has been speculated that changes in gastric mucosal energy metabolism differ according to the cause of injury. This study was conducted to investigate the role of energy metabolism in two drug-induced gastric mucosal injuries in humans. Methods: The subjects were patients with acute gastric mucosal injury due to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) or steroids, and normal controls. Two sets of tissue specimens from the antrum and corpus of the stomach were obtained. One specimen from each area was used for histological analysis and the other was stored in liquid nitrogen. The stored tissues were homogenized. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and adenosine monophosphate (AMP) were measured by the luciferin–luciferase method. Results and Conclusions: In the NSAID group, the ATP levels and the total adenine nucleotide (TAN) levels in both the antrum and corpus were significantly lower than in the control group. In the steroid group, no significant differences were observed in either the ATP or TAN levels. The NSAID decreased energy metabolism in the entire stomach while the steroid had a negligible effect on energy metabolism.

A cow, presenting with lameness with atrophy of the right supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles, was clinically diagnosed with suprascapular nerve paralysis. Histological examination revealed necrosuppurative lesions with Gram-positive cocci arranged in chains in multiple organs, including the cardiac valves, lungs, muscles, joints, brain, cerebral and spinal meninges. Spinal meningitis progressed into the roots of the right 6th to 8th cervical nerves. The suprascapular nerve showed partial loss of nerve fibers in the periphery, and innervated muscle fibers were atrophied. Bacterial culture of the cerebrospinal fluid revealed the presence of Streptococcus pyogenes. From these findings, the suprascapular nerve paralysis in this case was considered to result from meningoradiculitis associated with systemic streptococcal infection. This is a rare bovine case of suprascapular nerve paralysis due to central nerve damage of infectious cause.

Sarcomatous proliferation of spindle cells was present in the mammary gland and many metastatic sites in a 10-year-old female domestic cat with tubulopapillary carcinoma in the mammary gland. Transition from neoplastic tubular structures to spindle cells in the primary site and fascicular proliferation of the spindle cells with or without coexistance of tubulopapillary carcinoma in the primary and metastatic sites were observed. Most of spindle cells were positive for cytokeratin CAM5.2 as well as the normal luminal epithelium but not the myoepithelium. From these results, this case was diagnosed as tubulopapillary carcinoma with spindle cell metaplasia and it was clarified that neoplastic luminal epithelial cells can transform to sarcomatous appearence.

Microbial degradation of carbazole (CA), a model of hard-removal heterocyclic nitrogen compounds contained in petroleum oil, was examined using Sphingomonas sp. CDH-7 isolated from a soil sample by screening for CA-assimilating microorganisms. CDH-7 used CA as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen, and metabolized CA to ammonia via anthranilic acid as an intermediate product. When CDH-7 was cultivated in the medium containing CA at the concentration of 500 mg/l (2.99 mM), CA was completely degraded within 50 h. By the reaction with the resting cells of CDH-7, 500 mg/l of CA was completely degraded within 4 h, with 1.64 mM of ammonia accumulated in the reaction mixture. When CA was added at the concentration of 100 mg/l (0.599 mM) periodically to the reaction mixture ten times, 925 mg/l (5.54 mM) of CA was degraded within 48 h by the resting cells, and 4.50 mM of ammonia was accumulated in the reaction mixture with a 75.1% molar conversion yield based on total CA added. The resting cells could almost completely degrade CA in a two-liquid-phase system which consists of water and organic solvent, even in the presence of 20% (v/v) isooctane, n-hexane, cyclohexane, and kerosene as a model petroleum oil. In the presence of an organic solvent system such as 20% (v/v) pxylene, toluene, and heptanol, however, CA degradation yields decreased.

A 20-year-old thoroughbred mare had a mass in the right kidney. The mass was encapsulated with fibrous capsule and composed of variably-sized papillary projections lined by a single layer of flattened to cuboidal neoplastic epithelial cells with no cytological and nuclear atypia. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were broadly positive for cytokeratin AE1/AE3 and granular staining for alpha-1-antitrypsin was focally detected; this immunohistochemical property was similar to that of the normal distal nephron. From these results, this case was diagnosed as papillary renal adenoma of distal nephron differentiation.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, in the construction of the new waste disposaloffshore area, aims to increase the disposal volume by vertical drain method which accelerates the consolidation of the seabed soft soil as the reclamation works of the waste disopsals is executed. The project adopted the marine plastic drain (MPD) method in the northern part of B-block as vertical drain method.This MPD method, one of the plastic drain methods, has been developed for deep soilimprovement and has realized excellent working efficiency. And the design of MPD method is applicable to the plastic drain method which is used extensibely.

1.3 μm optical amplifiers for the long-distance up-stream networks are attractive for a future increase of fiber access network in telecommunications. In this report an optical amplification with Bi doped silica fiber (BDSF) fabricated by the vapor axial deposition (VAD) method is presented at 1300 nm.

Purpose: Plaque protrusion may cause thrombo-embolic events following carotid artery stenting (CAS). We evaluated the temporal profile and the treatment options of plaque protrusion (PLP) in our series. Methods: In 32 consecutive cases since April 2009 to December 2011, we checked intravascular status using ultrasound (US) and CT angiography (CTA) within 1 week after CAS. For these cases, medical risk factors, procedural factors, and pre-operative CTA and plaque MRI were also evaluated. Results: As for medical factors including hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia, there were no significant effects on PLP. Effects of neurological and radiological factors on post procedural PLP are shown in table1. Symptomatic and ulcerative plaque were the risk factor of the post procedural PLP (symptomatic plaque, RR 2.33; 95% CI, 1.31-4.16; p=0.01; ulceration, RR 2.33; 95% CI, 1.31-4.16; p=0.01). High intensity of T1-black blood (BB) MRI tended to induce PLP (RR 1.62; 95% CI, 1.03-2.54; p=0.09). Pre-dilatation may reduce PLP (RR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.21-1.34; p=0.09). All cases of PLP were treated by reinforcement of anticoagulation and/or antiplatelet therapy, and one case needed stenting following balloon angioplasty for progression of plaque protrusion in spite of medical treatments. In 8 cases of PLP, 7 cases were uneventful and 1 case had a minor stroke in the post-operative course. Conclusions: 1. In terms of plaque characteristics, ulceration and symptomatic plaque relevant to post procedural PLP. 2. Post procedural neuroimaging studies such as CTA and US are crucial to detect plaque protrusion. 3. In case of plaque protrusion, careful managements including reinforcement of thrombotic therapy and endovascular procedures are required.

Following the development of a bilayer acellular artificial skin by Yannas et al. which seemed unique with respect to spontaneous conversion of the inner collagen sponge into a dermis-like connective tissue layer, we started to develop an alternative acellular artificial skin and extended the indications for the material. Since reporting our early results of experimental and clinical use of the original version of the acellular artificial skin, several improvements have been made in stages to eliminate some drawbacks related to disinfection and preservation and to reduce the primary cost of manufacture. We used this material on 51 skin defects in 39 patients with success. The latest version of the material was also evaluated in multicenter clinical trials involving 80 cases. Separately, a material capable of sustained release of an antibiotic was developed and used in 6 wounds prone to infection with success. To solve the problem of two-stage surgery, a cellular artificial skin composed of an outer keratinocytic layer and an inner collagen sponge containing fibroblasts was produced using cell culture method by modifying the technique proposed by Boyce et al. This report reviews our acellular and cellular artificial skins.

In order to increase the cartilage synthesis of the perichondrium, we combined auricular perichondrium with a collagen sponge as a template (perichondrium-sandwiched collagen sponge) and implanted the assembly as an autograft into the back of rabbits. Microscopic examination revealed that cartilaginous tissue was produced in the collagen sponge and chondrosynthesis was accelerated in the collagen sponge implants in comparison with that in materials containing perichondrium alone.

Histological and immunohistochemical evaluations of lobular dissecting hepatitis (LDH) were performed in nine American cocker spaniel dogs. Histological examination showed diffuse fibrosis with weak inflammatory reaction of extensive neutrophils, macrophages, lymphocytes and plasma cells. Immunohistochemical examination revealed that the myofibroblastic cells positive for anti-α-smooth muscle actin and anti-vimentin antibodies produced reticular and collagen fibers and brought about the dissection of hepatic cords and diffuse disappearance of hepatocytes. Reticular fibers invading between hepatocytes and the surrounding small group of hepatocytes were strongly positive for anti-collagen type III and anti-collagen type IV antibodies. The positivity to anti-fibronectin and anti-laminin antibodies was frequently continuous on the basement membrane of the sinusoids of the remaining hepatic cords and between the hepatocytes. Positive findings for anti-E-cadherin antibody were not observed between the hepatocytes showing positive findings for anti-collagen type III and anti-collagen type IV antibodies. These results may explain the expression of fibronectin and laminin that occurs prior to the invasion of reticular fibers between hepatocytes. The present study further suggests that expression of an extracellular matrix mainly containing fibronectin and laminin between the hepatocytes and proliferation of collagen fibers and reticular fibers have a major role in the rupture of the hepatic cords and disappearance of hepatocytes.

A "bilayer artificial skin", composed of an inner layer of collagen sponge and an outer silicone layer, was developed by modifying the material reported by Yannas and Burke. Since our early results from experimental and clinical use of the original version of the "bilayer artificial skin" were reported, several improvements have been made in stages to eliminate some drawbacks related to disinfection and preservation and to reduce the primary cost of manufacture. The latest version of the material was successfully used in 27 sites on 23 patients. In this paper, the improvements in the material and the clinical results are described.

The submandibular and parotid glands are the main sources of immunoglobulins A (IgAs) in human and rat saliva. These glands express the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR), which transports IgAs into saliva. The main source of IgAs in saliva and pIgR expression in salivary glands has not been well documented in cattle. Expressions of pIgR were determined in the major bovine salivary glands (sublingual, submandibular, and parotid) by RT-PCR for mRNA and by Western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry (IHC) using an anti-human pIgR antibody for protein. The protein detected with the antibody was identified by nano-liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry. Additionally, the distribution of Ig-producing plasma cells was analyzed by IHC. RT-PCR showed that pIgR was expressed in the sublingual and submandibular glands, but not in the parotid gland. Higher protein levels were observed in sublingual glands than in submandibular glands by Western blot. By IHC, pIgR was mainly located on the apical side of the cytoplasmic membrane in the sublingual gland, whereas it was observed only on the basal side in the submandibular gland. The highest density of plasma cells expressing IgAs was observed in the sublingual gland. These results suggest that the sublingual gland plays an important role in first-line defence of the oral cavity in cattle in contrast to humans and rats.

Twelve cattle with IDDM presented emaciation, polyuria, polydipsia, glycosuria, persistent hyperglycemia, and decreased glucose tolerance. In chronic cases, major histopathological findings in the pancreas were a decrease in the size and number of pancreatic islets, interlobular and interacinar fibrosis, mild lymphocytic insulitis, and vacuolation of a few islets. Cells comprising atrophic islets were immunohistochemically revealed to be a- and d-cells. In acute cases, most islets consisted of vacuolated and severely degranulated b-cells and also contained numerous necrotic cells. Lymphocytic insulitis was common. Bovine IgG-immunoreactive islet cells were seen frequently in the vacuolated islets. Atrophic and vacuolated islets had no or small numbers of granules immunoreactive to GAD, respectively. In seven cases the bovine viral diarrhea virus was sought. Noncytopathic virus was isolated from blood leukocytes and sera of all cases. Viral antigen was demonstrated immunohistochemically in the acinar cells of the exocrine pancreas and epithelial cells of the pancreatic ducts. In four cases, viral antigen was also recognized in the islet cells. The results suggest that autoimmune insulin-dependent diabetes may have been induced by persistent BDV infection, resulting in the gradual and selective destruction of b-cells in pancreatic islets.

Ultrasonic irradiation to electroorganic systems resulted in significant effects on product-selectivity in the reduction of benzaldehydes and others. By the irradiation, the selectivity of reduction products formed by consuming fewer electrons was drastically enhanced. The effects were rationalized as due to not cavitation but agitation of electrolytic solutions by ultrasonic waves.

A bilayer artificial skin composed of a silicone sheet and a collagen sponge sheet was developed by us in 1986, modifying Yannas and Burke's technique. It was used in experimental animals and clinically, both with success; but the artificial skin was inconvenient for clinical use in terms of disinfection and preservation. In an attempt to reduce the drawbacks, we developed a re-freeze dried artificial skin. Experiments were conducted to examine whether the re-freeze dried material is equivalent to the prototype one. A significant difference between the two was found in tensile tests but not in experimental and clinical effects.

Hepatocellular carcinoma with metastases to lymph nodes and adrenal glands was found in a 26-year-old male Hokkaido brown bear (Ursus arctos yesoensis). Left hepatic lobe was largely replaced by well-differentiated neoplastic cells, whereas poorly differentiated tumor cells had proliferated in part of the left hepatic lobe, in scattered nodules in the remaining liver tissue, and at the metastatic sites. Immunoreactivity for hepatocyte antigen (hepatocyte paraffin 1 antibody) and alpha-fetoprotein was observed in both well- and poorly differentiated neoplastic cells in the liver and metastatic foci. To our knowledge, this case is the first report of hepatocellular carcinoma in brown bears.

A 22-year-old Thoroughbred stallion had severe left jugular thrombophlebitis. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations revealed extension of the lesions from a penetrating ulcer on the left buccal mucosa to the underlying muscle and local vein, and sequentially to the left jugular vein. This was a rare case of equine jugular thrombophlebitis caused by direct extension of infection from a traumatic oral lesion.

A 5-year-old female miniature dachshund presenting with persistent vomiting and diarrhea had two concurrent rare pathological conditions: systemic candidiasis and mesenteric mast cell tumor with multiorgan metastases. Neoplastic mast cells formed mass in the mesentery of the cecal-colonic region and were also found in the liver, spleen, kidneys, lungs, adrenal grands, ovaries, bone marrow and other tissues. The cells had intracytoplasmic granules with metachromasia and were immunohistochemically positive for c-kit and histamine. Granulomatous lesions with fungal organisms were present in the heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, subserosal and surrounding adipose tissue of the duodenum, thyroid glands and mesenteric mass, and phagocytosed organisms were detected in the liver and bone marrow. Bacteriologically and immunohistochemically, the fungi were consistent with Candida albicans.

The majority of hepatic cysts identified in animals are considered to derive from the intrahepatic bile ducts (biliary cysts). An alternative origin is the peribiliary glands located in the hilum of the liver and large portal tracts (peribiliary cysts). The distinction between biliary and peribiliary cysts, and whether these have different clinical significance, has rarely been considered previously. This study reports the pathological features of five cystic porcine livers. Four of these five livers had both biliary and peribiliary cysts and the fifth had only biliary cysts. Biliary cysts were not associated with distortion of adjacent hepatic parenchyma, whereas peribiliary cysts appeared to cause local compression and circulatory disturbance. It would therefore appear that peribiliary cysts have greater potential clinical significance than those of biliary origin.

A 12-year-old, intact female beagle exhibited symptoms of polyuria-polydipsia and hyperorexia for two months. Blood tests showed elevated asparate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and creatine kinase levels, as well as marked hypokalemia. The results of adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test showed elevated cortisol, aldosterone and corticosterone concentrations. Abdominal ultrasonography confirmed a mass in the left adrenal gland. Masses were also seen in the liver and caudal vena cava. Diagnosis was a tumor of the adrenal cortex with metastases. Trilostane administration was initiated. The dog initially showed improved demeanor as a result of regulating hormone secretion. However, after 88 days, the dog weakened rapidly, before dying on the 117th day. Pathological findings confirmed a diagnosis of adrenocortical carcinoma.

A bilayer artificial skin composed of a silicone membrane and a collagen sponge layer containing glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) was first developed by Yannas and Burke. They reported that GAGs contained in the collagen sponge layer contributed to the function of the artificial skin. In an attempt to assess the effect of GAGs in the collagen sponge layer, the electron microscopic structure, mechanical strength of collagen sponges, and cell proliferation were examined in vitro, using four kinds of collagen sponges containing: no GAG, chondroitin 6-sulphate (C6S), dermatan sulphate (DER), and hyaluronic acid (HYA). The results indicated that: (1) addition of GAGs scarcely affected the mechanical structure of collagen sponges; (2) addition of C6S and DER reinforced mechanical strength, while addition of HYA did not; (3) addition of C6S and DER significantly decreased cell proliferation.
