Abstract

Core-shell nanofibers consisted of chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol as shell and TiO2/Ag nanoparticles as core (abbreviated as (TiO2@AgNPs)@(CS/PVA)) are synthesized by electrospinning method for improving the functional properties of the epoxy polymer coatings. The agglomeration of the core-shell network is prevented through fabrication on carbon steel surface. Meanwhile, the presence of unique amine and hydroxyl functional groups on the surface of the CS/PVA nanofibers would provide a crosslinking with the epoxy resin molecules with merits of reducing the gaps between epoxy coating and fillers and enhancing the blocking effect of the fibers. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that the resistance of the epoxy coating loaded with the core-shell nanofibers is almost 3 times more than that of the blank sample during 30 days of soaking in the 3.5 wt% NaCl electrolyte. Moreover, the (TiO2@AgNPs)@(CS/PVA)/epoxy coating has shown high antibacterial activity against S. aureus with the highest antibacterial rate of 87% after 24 h storage in the solution of phosphate buffer salt. The developed core-shell nanofibers embedded within epoxy coating with enhanced anticorrosion and antibacterial properties could provide a promising application in various maritime fields for achieving both anticorrosion and antifouling properties in one coating system. Abstract

Rapid and accurate detection of changes in glucose (Glu) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentrations is essential for the predictive diagnosis of diseases. Electrochemical biosensors exhibiting high sensitivity, reliable selectivity, and rapid response provide an advantageous and promising solution. A porous two-dimensional conductive metal–organic framework (cMOF), Ni-HHTP (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene), was prepared by using a one-pot method. Subsequently, it was employed to construct enzyme-free paper-based electrochemical sensors by applying mass-producing screen-printing and inkjet-printing techniques. These sensors effectively determined Glu and H2O2 concentrations, achieving low limits of detection of 1.30 μM and 2.13 μM, and high sensitivities of 5573.21 μA μM−1 cm−2 and 179.85 μA μM−1 cm−2, respectively. More importantly, the Ni-HHTP-based electrochemical sensors showed an ability to analyze real biological samples by successfully distinguishing human serum from artificial sweat samples. This work provides a new perspective for the use of cMOFs in the field of enzyme-free electrochemical sensing, highlighting their potential for future applications in the design and development of new multifunctional and high-performance flexible electronic sensors. Transparent conductive films (TCFs) based on silver nanowires (AgNWs) are becoming one of the best candidates in realizing flexible optoelectronic devices. The AgNW-based TCF is usually prepared by coating AgNWs on a transparent polymer film; however, the coated AgNWs easily detach from the polymer underneath because of the weak adhesion between them. Abstract

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a common disorder that may be idiopathic, caused by trauma, or associated with alcohol or glucocorticoid use. The goals of early treatment include delaying or avoiding hip replacement, but there are no effective treatments for early-stage disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of treatment with 3D-printed porous titanium alloy scaffold combined with daily intraperitoneal trans-cinnamaldehyde (TCA) in a dog model of ONFH. Four weeks after creation of the ONFH model, MRI examination of the femoral head showed the characteristic "double line sign" of ONFH, verifying the validity of our model. After another 12 weeks, femoral head specimens were harvested and examined by gross inspection; micro-computed tomography; histologic staining (hematoxylin and eosin; Masson); immunohistochemical analysis and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. Gross inspection of the femoral head in untreated ONFH animals at 16 weeks after model creation showed pale, exfoliating articular cartilage and disordered trabecular bone. Treatment with 3D-printed titanium alloy porous scaffold combined with TCA ameliorated the pathologic ONFH changes and significantly reduced inmature bone tissue as well as imature collagen in the femoral head, as shown by Masson staining. This treatment also increased VEGF, BMP2, β-catenin, b-FGF, and RUNX2 expression and decreased PPARγ expression, compared with untreated ONFH. In conclusion, 3D-printed titanium alloy porous scaffold combined with TCA can effectively improve ONFH, which may be related to local repair. This provides the theoretical basis for a new treatment strategy for ONFH.

Abstract

Summary: Latent heat thermal energy storage can not only alleviate the mismatch between supply and demand but also improve the performance and dependability of the energy system. Unfortunately, previous research achieves a specific engineering load shifting using a single water‐phase change material (PCM) tank, the volume of which is tailored to the specific cooling or heating load. This paper proposes the concept of multi‐modular water‐PCM tanks (MMWPT), which offer flexibility and are simple to be mass‐produced, as thermal storage in an underground shelter's emergency mode. The thermal inertia of the geothermal energy is used to remain the PCM at solid state at first and to naturally cool the tank once they are melted. The mathematical model is created in MATLAB and validated by experiment with an NMBE of less than ±10% and RMSE of less than 30%. In addition, the MMWPT's thermal performance in various matrixes was investigated in an underground shelter where the peak load occurs suddenly and with low frequency. The result reveals that the ∆Twater in the scenario with matrix form of N (number of tanks in series) × 5 (number of tanks in parallel) is almost four times as that with matrix form of N × 1. By separating the water into five parallel water tanks, the corresponding EDD is 1.27‐1.28 times larger. Changing the N from 1 to 2 and 3 could increase the EDD by 3.0%‐12.5% and 5.9%‐25%, respectively. Three acceptable MMWPT matrixes were presented using the effective discharging duration (EDD) and temperature drop as assessment criteria. Additionally, PCM with a maximum phase change temperature (Tpch_PCM) of 19.41°C and a connection matrix of 3 × 4 is recommended when using a single charging cycle or active cooling approach. Otherwise, a Tpch_PCM of 22.41°C with a connection matrix of 3 × 5 is advised. This research is planned to give references for using the MMWPT in underground shelters to shift loads. Abstract

Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) is one of the efficient ways to reduce fresh air load. However, there is a major concern, which energy recovery cannot trade off ERV's fan power consumption, even with causing counteraction to precool (preheat) fresh air in winter (summer). In this study, energy recovery is quantitatively evaluated during cooling season and heating seasons for an office building in Chongqing by employing TRNSYS. Based on the ERV's fan power consumption and energy saving which is converted to chiller's electricity consumption, outdoor fresh air is divided into four zones (zone I, zone II, zone III and zone IV) on a psychometric chart (ID chart). The results show that ERV which only operates in profit zones (zone III and zone IV) can increase electricity saving by 65.23% and reduce operating time by 31.18% than that operating throughout heating and cooling seasons. The proposed operation condition zones method can help identify profit pattern, minimize the energy consumption of ERV and air conditioning system.

Abstract

The adaptation and diversity of animals to the extreme environments of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) are typical materials to study adaptive evolution. The recently discovered Jinchuan yak population has many individuals with multiple ribs. However, little is known about this yak's origin, evolution, and the genetic mechanisms that formed its unique multirib trait. Here, we report a valuable population genome resource of the Jinchuan yak by resequencing the whole genome of 150 individuals. Population genetic polymorphism and structure analysis reveal that Jinchuan yak can be differentiated as a unique and original yak population among the domestic yak. Combined with geological change, the Jinchuan yak's evolutionary origin is speculated to be about 6290 years ago, which may be related to the unique geographical environment of the eastern edge of the QTP during this period. Compared with other domestic yaks, this new population has 280 positively selected genes. The genes related to skeletal function hold a considerable and remarkable proportion, suggesting that the specific skeletal characteristics have been enhanced in the adaptive evolution of Jinchuan yak in the extreme plateau environment. The genome‐wide association study has revealed that TUBA8 and TUBA4A, the genes that regulate the cytoskeleton, are potential genes associated with the multirib trait. Our findings provide a basis to further understand the generation mechanism of the adaptive evolution of this new population in high‐altitude extreme environments and the multivertebrate trait of domestic animals.
