Abstract

We develop a source-specific high-resolution emission inventory for the Shandong region of eastern China for 2000 and 2020. Our emission estimates for year 2000 are higher than other studies for most pollutants, due to our inclusion of rural coal consumption, which is significant but often underestimated. Still, our inventory evaluation suggests that we likely underestimate actual emissions. We project that emissions will increase greatly from 2000 to 2020 if no additional emission controls are implemented. As a result, PM2.5 concentrations will increase; however O3 concentrations will decrease in most areas due to increased NOx emissions and VOC-limited O3 chemistry. Taking Zaozhuang Municipality in this region as a case study, we examine possible changes in emissions in 2020 given projected growth in energy consumption with no additional controls utilized (BAU), with adoption of best available end-of-pipe controls (BACT), and with advanced, low-emission coal gasification technologies (ACGT) which are capable of gasifying the high-sulfur coal that is abundant in China. Emissions of NH3 are projected to be 20% higher, NMVOC 50% higher, and all other species 130-250% higher in 2020 BAU than in 2000. Both alternative 2020 emission scenarios would reduce emissions relative to BAU. Adoption of ACGT, which meets only 24% of energy service demand in Zaozhuang in 2020 would reduce emissions more than BACT with 100% penetration. In addition, coal gasification technologies create an opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by capturing and sequestering CO2 emissions below ground. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. 68. Energy-Efficient Sensor Deployment Strategy for Optimal Coverage of Underwater Events Inspired by Krill Herd

Abstract

Recently, underwater acoustic sensor networks can be widely applied to various aspects of ocean monitoring. In these applications, one of the critical issues is to improve the coverage efficiency of the monitoring events with minimum energy consumption. Here, we show an energy-efficient sensor deployment strategy to achieve the optimal coverage for events. Inspired by the foraging behavior of krill herd, the movement pattern of krill herd is improved to apply to the sensors with distributed communication to reduce energy consumption. Meanwhile, the coverage threshold is considered to improve the convergence and combined with the information about the surrounding sensors and events to make each sensor move to the optimal position to achieve the optimal coverage with minimum energy consumption. Furthermore, two important performance indexes: 1) coverage efficiency and 2) energy consumption are analyzed to better evaluate the deployment strategy. Simulation results confirm that the proposed deployment strategy performs good energy efficiency and coverage efficiency.

Abstract

In order to explore the influence of fresh tobacco quality indexes with different maturity on the quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves, Yujinxiang 1 was as the experimental material, and the tissue structure and contents of pigment and biochemical components in different mature degrees of leaves ( still mature, proper mature and over mature) were determined. The contribution of fresh tobacco quality indexes to the quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves was studied by partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The results showed that there were significant differences in pigment content, tissue structure and biochemical components content in fresh tobacco leaves with different maturity. The quality indexes of fresh tobacco with different maturity had significant effects on the quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves. The upper and lower epidermis thickness, palisade tissue thickness, tissue ratio and ratio of carotenoid to chlorophyll had greater contributions to the quality of flue-cured tobacco. The thickness of lower epidermis and tissue ratio were negatively correlated with the appearance quality and sensory quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves, the thickness of upper epidermis and palisade tissue were positively correlated with the appearance quality and sensory quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves, and the ratio of carotenoid to chlorophyll was positively correlated with the appearance quality and negatively correlated with the sensory quality. In conclusion, there were close relationships between the quality indexes of fresh tobacco with different maturity and the quality of flue-cured tobacco, which provided a theoretical basis for the selection of judgment criteria of tobacco maturity and the improvement of flue-cured tobacco quality. Abstract

The stratification effect underwater can lead to the localization errors in underwater acoustic sensor network. In order to compensate the stratification effect and improve the localization accuracy, we propose a localization algorithm based on the improved particle swarm optimization. Firstly, instead of approximating seawater as a homogeneous medium, this paper builds the layered medium model. Then the ray theory method is employed to compensate stratification effect. And the ranging with compensating for stratification effect is analyzed. Based on the ranging, the particle swarm optimization is improved to introduced into localization. Lastly, the optimal position of unknown nodes in underwater acoustic sensor network is obtained. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively compensate the stratification effect and improve localization accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In order to improve the performance of the sparrow search algorithm (SSA), in this paper, a novel series of SSA variants is proposed by combining SSA with improved Tent chaos mutation (IT), Lévy flights mutation (LF), elite opposition-based learning mutation (EOBL), variable radius mutation (VR) and the combination of IT, LF, EOBL, and VR, namely, ITSSA, LFSSA, EOBLSSA, VRSSA, and CMSSA, respectively. Initially, the performance of these variants is evaluated on a comprehensive set of 31 benchmark test functions. Moreover, the performance of the best algorithm among these variants is compared with 19 state-of-the-art optimization algorithms to validate its performance on 31 benchmark test functions. The convergence and computational complexity of the best variant are also analyzed to test exploration, exploitation, and local optima avoidance. It is then employed on eight real-world constrained engineering problems to further verify its robustness. The experimental results reveal that the best algorithm of SSA variants outperforms other competitors and is highly effective in solving real-life cases.

Abstract

Ozone (O3) isopleths describe the nonlinear responses of O3 concentrations to changes in nitrogen oxides (NOX) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and thus are pivotal to the determination of O3 control requirements. In this study, we innovatively use the Community Multiscale Air Quality model with the high-order decoupled direct method (CMAQ-HDDM) to simulate O3 pollution of China in 2017 and derive O3 isopleths for individual cities. Our simulation covering the entire China Mainland suggests severe O3 pollution as 97% of the residents experienced at least 1 day, in 2017, in excess of Chinese Level-II Ambient Air Quality Standards for O3 as 160 μg·m-3 (81.5 ppbV equally). The O3 responses to emissions of precursors vary widely across individual cities. Densely populated metropolitan areas such as Jing-Jin-Ji, Yangtze River Delta, and Pearl River Delta are following NOX-saturated regimes, where a small amount of NOX reduction increases O3. Ambient O3 pollution in the eastern region generally is limited by VOCs, while in the west by NOX. The city-specific O3 isopleths generated in this study are instrumental in forming hybrid and differentiated strategies for O3 abatement in China.
